the next time someone asks me my favourite music genre i'm just going to say the hunger games soundtrack and when they're like, 'oh you mean the album?' i'll say 'no no the genre' and the people who get it will get it

NEW FEATURE: Now That's What I Call Rankings
I'm going to listen to every album in the UK Now That's What I Call Music compilation series and pick the best five tracks from each.
Now That's What I Call Music 1
28 November 1983
5 - That's All; Genesis
Love the rhythm, love the incredibly groovy keyboard, and Phil Collins nails the vocals.
4 - The Lovecats; The Cure
Wonderful bass, and I adore Robert Smith's catlike vocals.
3 - Moonlight Shadow; Mike Oldfield
Romantic and lush - big fan of the harmonies and pace. Hardly a moment for vocalist Maggie Reilly to catch a breath. Great guitar solo kicks it to the next level.
2 - Too Shy; Kajagoogoo
So perfectly of its time. Love the blend of the synth, guitars and drums. And I love the chorus to bits.
Honourable Mentions
These songs are also great:
You Can't Hurry Love; Phil Collins
Is There Something I Should Know?; Duran Duran
Red Red Wine; UB40
Karma Chameleon; Culture Club
The Safety Dance; Men Without Hats
Down Under; Men At Work
Baby Jane; Rod Stewart
Whenever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home); Paul Young
Candy Girl; New Edition
Tonight, I Celebrate My Love; Peabo Bryson & Robert Flack
Waterfront; Simple Minds
The Sun and the Rain; Madness
Victims; Culture Club
1 - Total Eclipse of the Heart; Bonnie Tyler
No other song stood a chance, really. Absolutely phenomenal song. The drama! The way it builds! Tyler's voice! And I have so much respect for the fact that it takes nearly two minutes before we get to hear the title of the song.

my brother found an old hard drive and salvaged all the files from it to give my mom, so she's spent hours now sifting through old shit from the family computer in the 2000s. there's a bunch of wav files in the 'recordings' folder that seem like they got corrupted now so it's just beeps in the tenor of speech and occasionally warped non-voices. she found a folder called 'from internet' with a bunch of mystery audio files with weird generated names and one with a woman's name. she inadvisably opened the one with a woman's name and it started playing high, garbled, haunting singing.
i recommended not bothering to open the rest because ??? that computer was from when my brother and i were teenagers and we were all sharing one computer. god knows what you're going to find. the best case scenario is more creepypasta shit.
mom opened the next one anyway.
it was a three second fart sound.
she started opening the rest of them one by one.
all fart sounds.

FEATURE: Now That's What I Call Rankings 2
I'm listening to every album in the UK Now That's What I Call Music compilation series and picking the best five tracks from each.
Disclaimer: My list will never take into account the politics or personal lives of any contributors to the songs.
Now That's What I Call Music 2
26 March 1984
5 - What Difference Does It Make?; The Smiths
Such cool guitar, and the vocal really works for me.
4 - Radio Ga Ga; Queen
Nowhere near my favourite Queen song, and yet it's still brilliant. Love the way it develops - really takes its time establishing a mood.
3 - What Is Love; Howard Jones
SO 80s - I can't hear this without imagining grainy television in 4:3. There's so much going on in the music, and the melody of the chorus lifts this above some very strong competition.
2 - That's Livin' Alright; Joe Fagin
It's not as sophisticated as countless other songs on this album, but its momentum and energy means I could listen to this endlessly, and feel pumped.
Honourable Mentions
These songs are also great:
Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed;Matt Bianco
99 Red Balloons; Nena
Girls Just Want to Have Fun; Cyndi Lauper
My Guy; Tracey Ullman
I Gave You My Heart (Didn't I); Hot Chocolate
Relax; Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Here Comes the Rain Again; Eurythmics
Undercover of the Night; The Rolling Stones
Pipes of Peace; Paul McCartney
1 - Only You; The Flying Pickets
I must have heard this song a thousand times, and it's only this time I realised it's entirely a cappella! I'm a fool. But it's gorgeous, and manages to be so evocative of its time even without the 80s instrumentation of Yazoo's original version.
