I find adding scars to elves makes them 10x cooler. As a kid, Illidan is my warcraft 3 pick, I love it whenever Iorveth opens his mouth and Captain Mithrun is one of my all-time favourites. All of them have scars and all of them are hunters (demons or humans). Of course there are other scarred elves. But my love lies in the three. They have a common pattern be it by design or story arcs. But why? Why do I like this pattern so much? Let me try to justify myself to myself.

*Spoilers for Dungeon Meshi, Witcher 2 and Warcraft 3??? (not that heavy I guess, spoilers for Mithrun's past tho)

For my heart to elven scars, let’s talk about an archetype of elves. To be honest, I like dwarves more (love Senshi of course and Muradin). Elves are usually portrayed as the word "divine", attractive, forevermore, pure, vined and shaped with the letter V. They are humans but "better". An impossibly polished human. But maybe that’s why I find most elves boring. They're too clean, too good, too skilled. Many put elven flaws as being too prideful with their perfection that they refuse to lower their sharp noses for other races. Nothing more to that than an arrogant side character. I want more but for me they're either so perfect or have a veneer of perfection.

Elves with scars? The outer layer of perfection is slashed open. You can see the scars, the flesh, the mistakes, the flaws, and they bleed just as any other creature. It tells you a lot. To see a misfire and their eyes are often the target. Ethereal beauties with enchanting eyes and nigh accurate vision, gone. Scars runs down their face, forced to show their flaws. Their pride stripped away. Nothing left but a ruined elf. A mess in both appearance and style. Illidan overcomplicates himself, Iorveth’s wears ragged leftovers and Mithrun cannot do anything. But I much prefer this over the polished and decorate look of typical elves. It's like preferring to wear ripped jeans over a cleanly ironed skirt.

But ultimately they would despise whoever ripped them apart. Illidan, Iorveth and Mithrun are willing to sacrifice themselves to meet face to face with those that disfigured them, the enemy they vowed to rid the world of. The enemy that sought to ruin them forever, to ruin what makes an elf, an elf. Ostracizing them. Sparing them, reminding them. Morphing them into a vassal of vengeful vendetta, cynical and blunt. It will forever be a part of themself. But it's hard to say if they ever truly accept their scars. Still, they don’t care to keep up the elven grace and pride anymore, they are outsiders now. But they are not alone. They are leaders of their own group of course. Illidari, Scoiathel and Canaries are a collection of outcasts, far from perfect.  Though they might suffered alone back then, they found their own community and companions that accepts them. In each of their stories, they even found unlikely loyal allies (at least in a Witcher 2 path and Warcraft 3).

It’s still the rule of cool in the end, but I definitely will be attached to them as I dive deeper into their character. I root for those dead-focused haywired eyes. Getting myself so engrossed to see them being not so heroic, yet trying to their best to seek their own justice and self-worth.  They’re never truly aimless, they just need to find their target.

oh man. i experienced momentary blackout, as one does, when asked abt what one particularly likes haha. hmm let me see, let me see - i remembered SEVERAL such fics, and i shall list them all:

• feels like we only go backwards by oldpotatoe — ok i’m only putting this here for myself, bc i stopped reading it midway & i need to get back to it asap. anyway, sokka’s inner monologues in this are freaking HILARIOUS. and i’m not particularly into shipping, especially in atlaverse - but this fic single-handedly converted me into a zukka shipper so

• THIS SAGA OF FELLOWSHIP SHENANIGANS — u’ll laugh until there are tears in ur eyes <3 beautiful. just beautiful *mimes wiping away tears from my eyes*

• as i have heretofore -- and i’ll continue to forevermore, i’d be very remiss if i didn’t mention with every seed you sow, let it wash away, wash away by @afaramir — it feels so. hopeful despite, - no INSPITE, - of all the grief amidst the joy. i’m as addicted to this fic as sherlock holmes is to cocaine. abby i’ll rec this fic until you’re sick of me CHEERS <3 xo

i’m gonna be real with u friend… most of the time i forget that this button even exists ajfgsjksh. i’m always on the lookout for more fics on tumblr tho, so i don’t really miss out much.

BUT i will say that @emyn-arnens’s On These Hither Shores -- another favourite! -- instantly drew my attention & i blitzed through her other works. this fic qualifies as an answer to the above question as well as to the re-read one, i guess. it’s warm & lovely and i’ve read it more times than i can count. rushing back to go subscribe now; i’m shocked and appalled that i haven’t done that already!

Updates are pretty much when I can manage it these days. For future books, I plan to have them fully written before sharing — which means there will be a long break between books 2 and 3, but then chapters should be posted on a regular weekly basis, which is what I want to have happen with TLE2, but then….didn’t hahaha.

I have a Mallevil nugget I really wanted to draw but I don’t have the time yet.

I always think it is utter bullshit that anyone else in that school did not realise malleus is very vanilla and he just want your company. Also like I feel people like Vil or cater(this one is kind of confirmed) will not be afraid of him.

I feel like malleus would find Vil endearing. He often show how he is struggled to lose people around him and is not truly content with his loneliness and being at the spot he is at. Especially in the end of chapter 6 he talked about how human have a short life and was melancholy about eventually will have to let go. But ironically everyone is smiling during his talk with Lilia. I don’t think he could find anyone beside perhaps Lilia would relate to him. But I feel he might feel endearing that Vil worked so hard no matter the cards that was dealt to him. How Vil was dealt of the rules and confine of the society and he just worked really hard to win and shine in his own way. (Especially how he developed after chapter 6)I feel this is just what a lot of people would be attracted to Vil. So I thought he would find that endearing and powerful that Vil was thriving like this. Also giving him another perspective perhaps. Also I don’t think Vil will be scared with him and will just talk to him like people.

Tho like I feel in the main story I feel malleus spoils Vil a bit, (without a better word)but that is another thing.

I feel they would go on walks together sometimes. It probably start off like vil was collecting some botany samples in the ruins and he met Malleus. They would probably have a conversation and they found themselves meeting regularly after. They will learn more about each other during that time.

I feel malleus is the one who fall first. Vil has that otherworldly beauty but he also felt like he really enjoyed Vil’s company and hearing Vil’s perspective on things. How Vil is very honest and harsh but very supportive at the same time. Most importantly he is not afraid of him. Oh also he praised how good looking he is.

One day maybe malleus would ask, say Schoenheit, what if there is a magic that would preserve your beauty forever, would you use it? Your beauty will be forevermore. Even after a thousand years you are still as beautiful as you are now.

Vil will say it sounds tempting on paper but I have to reject the offer. I never used magic to enhance my beauty to begin with and I never will. Also, wouldn’t that mean I would stay the same forever? My beauty will never fade, but it will never improve either. What a shame. Don’t you want to see how much more beautiful I will be?

I feel malleus will be very charmed by his answer and he managed to say I see. As expected from you, Schoenheit. It was very interesting. Can we meet more often like this again?

Which Vil will oblige.

That would be something very Vil to say. I feel they would have a lot of interactions like this. I feel his perspective can bring malleus out of his shell a little. Like I think Vil will be the one of the only people who encouraged Malleus to be more powerful. Just because like don’t you want to know your potential? You are so powerful now but it does not mean you can just slack off. Don’t you want to experience different things? Sort of these encouragement.

And vil will take care of him and probably not left him behind lol. They will do their makeup together. The possibility is endless.

Which will probably blend in Malleus overblot in chapter7 but that is another story
