As winter approaches and my family is caught in the crossfire of genocide. The constant threat of airstrikes, freezing temperatures, hunger, and the lack of medicine have put my family in a dire situation. I am doing everything I can to protect 24 members of my family—including children who deserve the chance to survive this coming winter.

26-year-old Tamia Potter is making history by becoming the first Black woman neurosurgery resident at Vanderbilt in the school’s 148-year history.

Potter graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Florida A&M University, an HBCU in Tallahassee. She is also expected to graduate from Case Western Reserve University at the end of her current term. She received the news of her monumental placement on March 17, better known to medical students as ‘Match Day,’ in which the National Resident Matching Program reveals applicants’ specialty and residency placements.

'I always wanted to go to Vanderbilt. That has been a dream of mine, so I ranked them #1,' Potter said via NBC affiliate 11Alive. 'You go through the entire process, you don't know what you're going to get. You really don't know what's in that letter, you have no idea. And so you're just praying that it's the place that you want to go.'

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, approx 5.7% of physicians in the U.S. identify as Black or African American. Potter said that, across the United States, there are only 33 known Black woman neurosurgeons.

'The network of Black people in neurosurgery is pretty small,' she said. 'I was just looking to feel respected ... I was looking for a program that really didn't treat me differently because I was a woman or because I was a woman of color or anything like that. I wanted to go to a place where I was respected. And not just me being respected, but everyone in the vicinity.'

While Potter is excited to be the first Black woman neurosurgery resident at Vanderbilt, she also said she hopes she won’t be the last.

Truly Terrible True Trailers….? - IMRAN ™ I despise false advertising. But this is nuts. Seriously. People suing because the trailer for a movie misled them. Have they not heard of reading synopsis or ratings or reviews? I hate trailers that give away the whole story. Plus what is funny or erotic or sad or dramatic or cliched or formulaic are all matters of personal tastes and opinions. What do they want? I can imagine a trailer like this. “Coming possibly soon to a movie theater possibly near your area, a sort of love story that may move you to tears, or offer a chance to laugh at some jokes that may be funny. With performances by actors whom you’ve probably seen in some flop movies and whose acting will be marketed as Oscar-worthy but unlikely to win any awards.
