DESI JAMES POTTER HEADCANON

Disclaimer: this is not era-typical. this is strictly subjective, this is my way of projecting my delusions and hoping I meet someone like James Potter some day!!

James craves parental and academic validation.

Now before I get jumped, lets all be real for one second. You are telling me James Potter is a desi first gen NRI and he does not crave validation? I refuse to believe that!! And it was not that Effie and Monty pressurized him... it was the opposite actually. they did not say a thing and my boy just felt he had to be the best because he has such nice parents who never ask for anything how can he ever live up to it??

He was the kind to lose sleep before important days. Right before the big matches and papers you would find James F. Potter roaming the halls of the school in the wee hours of morning, hands tightly clutching onto a mug that says, "You are ENOUGH" (his parents gifted him this in 3rd year when they noticed he was not doing well). The mug is obviously filled to the brim with either masala chai or cold coffee (the indian one).

2. He smelled like cloves

now this is something I have observed in my day to day life and feel like James too, would partake in. He would be the kind to use "spicy" toothpaste. simply because he thinks they last longer or smth. Effie also makes him homemade oil that has cloves (idk what they do I just associate the spice with him OKAY?) So basically when his partner(s) kiss him, they taste and smell clove. And it is not a comforting spice like cinnamon but imagine a whitewashed Regulus getting used to the sting of cloves and the horrible dant kanti-esque taste because the boyfriend uses them. There is a point when Regulus just starts carrying around a small bottle of clove oil or a box of clove and elaichi daana because James smells like cloves and Sirius like cardamom (FIGHT ME.)

3. Resident Problem Solver

Was he mischievous? Hell yes. Did he still make efforts to make sure everyone was okay? Duh.

James would be the kind to ask everyone about their day at the dinner table and be actually interested in what they have to say. He would notice when one of his friends were having a hard day and just drop a ladoo on their plate or ask them if they would like "non-spicy" chai. He would be the peacemaker. ALWAYS. He DID not like conflict. It hurt his soul to watch his friends fight or give each other a cold shoulder.

4. He LOVED being Desi.

he had the diaspora issue, obviously. But Effie and Monty came from the pre-partition India and tried to hold onto their country as much as they could. So James was super used to all the desi things. He had a head full of thick luscious curls because his mother massaged oil and gave him champi every week. When he moved to Hogwarts his hair suffered a little before the Summer when Sirius visited the Potters. Effie taught both of them how to apply oil onto each other's scalps and then it became their tradition at Hogwarts.

5. When Sirius returned bald.

there is a very popular HC that one year Walburga shaved Sirius' hair off because he was being disrespectful or smth. That year, James developed a variant of Indulekha x Parachute Coconut Oil (come on Desis i know you know what I mean) and made sure Sirius had his long hair back before Christmas. He would personally look after his diet, forcing amla tea down his throat or making sure he is eating 3-4 meals that consist of healthy things and not just meat as Sirius would otherwise have it.

Regulus fell in love with James around this time because he did smth he could not, protect Sirius. He went as far as daring Walburga to try to do it again, James would make sure Sirius grows his hair longer than ever.

ps. he was the one who came up with curl-care routine for the marauders and all of them had PJO cast like hair it was so cute jadfiqgfuiwgiuu okay

6. He did not practice any religion

James was not religious, he was spiritual. He did whatever his mum, who herself practiced two religions, told him to do. Both Effie and Monty believed in giving back to the society more than giving to some religious institute, so imagine a first year James rushing into Poppy's wing with an injured bird in his hand begging her to save it.

7. He was the people's princess.

fight the wall. everyone, even the slytherins, secretly LOVED him and the gulab jamuns he would give out on Diwali every year.

8. Enjoyer of classical music.

I have said it before, I will say it again. MY MANZ LISTENED TO GHULAM ALI. idc if he was muggle or what, he loved his music, language be damned.

9. TRAINED CLASSICAL MUSICIAN

he was trained in sitar and he could sing as well. he was basically an in house singer. He learnt electric guitar in his 2nd year and then there was no looking back. If he would not have been a professional quidditch player he would have been a musician or a music teacher or smth.

10. he was a STEM student.

okay this is non-canon but comp sci major James? who also happens to enjoy botany? yes. just the best.

11. James who would slip into Urdu when he was overwhelmed, who loved when people played with his hair. James who wrote letters in Urdu or Hindi or whatever regional language his parents spoke and wrote.

13. James Potter with bitten lips, he does that whenever he is nervous.

Luke looked up from his reading when the door to the Organa-Solo apartment slid open. Han wandered into the sitting room a moment later. His sense was warm and relaxed, and his attire matched. His formal jacket was slung over one shoulder, his shirt sleeves were rolled up, and his spavat had been untied and hung loose at his collar.

“Hey, kid,” he greeted. “Pretty quiet in here. You didn’t sell my kids to the circus, did you?”

”Not for lack of trying,” Luke quipped back, marking his spot and tossing his data pad on the lounger beside him. “Ringmaster said they were too small yet. Since I have to wait and try again next year, I dropped them back in their beds. They’ve been out cold for an hour. How was the event?”

“Just like every other one,” Han shrugged and flung his jacket over a nearby chair. “Lots of fancy people who like to listen to themselves talk eating fussy hors d'oeuvres and drinking wine that’s more label than taste. Leia had a good time until she and Winter got cornered into a hush-hush meeting with Mon over something.” He frowned. “Why didn’t you go, anyway? You like museums.”

“I’ve already been,” Luke said casually, rolling to his feet and grabbing his glass from the side table.

”This was the grand opening,” Han objected. “What, did you get some kind of special Jedi tour?”

“Something like that,” Luke offered noncommittally, angling past his brother-in-law toward the kitchen.

Han’s demeanor turned smug. “Let me guess — it was one of your excursions with Jade.”

“It might have been,” Luke shot a sly look over his shoulder. “But I’d keep that suspicion to yourself if I was you.”

“Oh yeah? Why’s that?”

”Because you have a life day coming up, and if you don’t do anything to bring unwanted attention to Mara, a bottle of Whyren’s gold might find its way into your gift pile.”

“Gold label?” Ambling after him, Han whistled. “How’re you affording that on a Jedi’s salary?”

”Mara’s getting a couple cases at a pretty serious discount,” Luke confided, rinsing his glass and putting it in the cleaning unit. “Someone at the distillery owes her a favor.”

”That’s some favor.” Han cocked his head. “She seems like the type who knows how to collect ‘em, though.”

The Omega in Luke bristled. He immediately quelled the reaction, but not before Han caught it.

“Hey,” he said, lifting his hands, palms out. “You know I’ve got nothing but respect for Jade. The NRI might jump to tawdry assumptions, but that’s just because they lack imagination. Me,” he lowered his hands, pointing at his chest. “I’ve been around the system. Flesh is easy and cheap. You want to collect real favors, you have to get into the weird stuff.” Raising his eyebrows, he held his hands a short distance apart, palms parallel to one another. “Saw a guy trade a whole moon once for this ugly little statue — this big, looked like it oughta be a doorstop at a tacky cantina.”

Amused, Luke felt the tension in his shoulders ease. He clapped a hand on his brother-in-law’s shoulder as he passed back toward the sitting room.

He’d known, intellectually, that it would take a while for the NRI to warm up to Karrde and, by extension, Mara. The Intelligence community was skeptical of smugglers as a whole and less than thrilled at how deftly Karrde’s organization had shoe-horned its way into the respectable echelons of the New Republic government. The fact that they couldn’t find a single record of Mara’s existence prior to her work for Karrde only exacerbated their frustrations. He didn’t begrudge them their caution, really.

But after three heats spent in Mara’s bed, the Omega in him had unavoidably begun to think of her as his, and he couldn’t entirely suppress the instinctive resentment that flared when she was disrespected.

Their secret Force-healing and training sessions didn’t help the situation. Mara was intensely careful about her shielding, only ever letting him into one small section of her mind or body at a time, but the anxiety singing at the edges of his touch each time left him profoundly aware of the risk she was taking, entrusting him with even that much. There was something incredibly intimate about extending his own control over the Force into her body, knitting together the fine sheathing around ravaged nerves or unraveling knotted scar tissue and seeing her entire body soften as a long-borne pain slipped away. About the way she smiled when they finished, as if he could see a little more light behind her eyes, a little more spaciousness in her breath.

Then there were their “excursions” as Han called them. Mara had grown up on Coruscant and, much to his delight, Luke had discovered that she had a mischievous streak. When the mood struck, she would appear from nowhere with a glint in her eyes that made his heart rate kick up with the same bright anticipation he’d known as a youth when he raced his skyhopper toward the canyons to Thread the Needle or when sneaking round bases during the early days of the war with the Rogues, intent on pranking another squadron. Ditching whatever he was supposed to be doing, he’d follow her at all hours of day or night. It was through those stolen moments that she introduced him to all the intriguing places that existed beneath the surface —often literally — of Coruscant’s glittering cityscape. Private libraries. Greasy cantinas whose menus were as obscure as they were mouth-watering. Junk shops whose backroom shelves mysteriously stocked the most hard-to-find parts for anyone willing to ask no questions about their provenance. And, occasionally, secret tunnels and camoflaged peep holes through which they accessed yet-to-open museum exhibits or dress rehearsals of the most in-demand new performances.

In her determination to prove her independence from her former master and the life he’d shackled her into, Mara was steadily, and entirely accidentally, achieving the one goal she’d believed wholly out of reach: capturing Luke’s heart.

It’s fine, he told himself for the hundredth time, gathering his data pad and bidding Han goodnight. It wasn’t like they slept together outside of his heats, and Mara was genuinely the perfect Alpha. She would never claim him, would never try to bind him or prevent him from keeping his vows of independence and service to the new Jedi Order that he was building. As an Omega, it wasn’t like he could claim her, and her traumatic past meant that even at his weakest he would never ask her to claim him. If she ever found another Omega to bond with, the loss might kill him. Unless or until then, however, he intended to enjoy every moment he could manage with her.

How to play Holi: The Basics.

What you need:

Old clothes. A lot of people wear white during Holi, but I prefer to wear old clothes so I don't have to worry about it.

(Edit: tip from @mae77eris ) Oil your hair and body. Liberally. It helps keep the color from sticking and prevents your hair from turning dry as fuck.

Powder colors. You'll probably find this on Amazon, or the Indian stores where you live. Try getting organic colors that don't stain, or you'll have a temporary dye job for the next week.

A water gun or pichkari. Choose your weapon. Water guns sometimes come with containers which are helpful so you don't need to keep refilling water, but I've found that pichkaris have a bigger range.

Water balloons. Aka projectile missiles. These things can hurt like a bitch if they aren't filled properly so be careful, but nobody cares because its fun.

A bucket. Fill up the damn bucket and dump it over people's heads. It's delightful to watch them shriek in surprise when they get cold water down their backs.

Tips to be sneaky:

Wear pants with pockets, and fill them up with balloons and color packets. If someone attacks, retaliate in kind. This is sparta.

If you're playing in an apartment complex, or if you can get to higher ground (bonus points if you're above the people playing), use it to your advantage. Toss water balloons and color at the people playing. All's fair in Holi.

Wear shoes you can run in. People will chase you with colors and water. You can try to evade, but you'll be caught. At least give them a chase :)

The aftermath:

When you get into the bath, shampoo the shit out of your hair at least thrice. Especially if you were playing with colors that stain.

You can wash or toss your clothes. I usually wear clothes that have a hole in them so I can use them for craft or as a new duster.

Eat some traditional Holi food. Gujiya, thandai, dahi bhalla and jalebi.

I know I described a lot of this as a sort of war, but that's how I play with my friends and family lmao. It's all or nothing for us.

Make sure YOU have fun while playing Holi. Be respectful of people's boundaries, be nice, and have a blast. It's a wonderful experience, I promise.

WIP: Mysteries of the Sith, indeed

I don’t know if you’ll believe me when I say that Part 2 is almost done, but it is and I have another segment as proof. 

Here Mara checks in with Karrde to talk about her recent unwanted adventures at the behest of Ka’Pa the Hutt, and the disappearance of Kyle Katarn...

Something wasn’t adding up. With a growing sense of urgency, I messaged Karrde, asking for details of a Jedi temple on some planet named Dromund Kaas in the Outer Rim.

He called me almost immediately, concern on his face as the holo coalesced in front of me.

“Mara. What’s this about Sith Space? I thought you were on Altyr V with the Republic.”

“Your information is out of date.”  He swore under his breath as I told him about Katarn’s departure and my unwilling adventures with Ka’pa.

“Someone at NRI blocked another one of my sources,” he grumbled, “They’re getting better, y’know.”

“You can’t rely on the incompetence of others forever,” I admonished him, “Even the NRI. Now what’s this about Sith Space?”

“Dromund Kaas is in the Esstran Sector: a Sith colony. That’s why it’s not on standard star charts.”

“It’s not exactly a tourist destination,” I murmured. I knew there had been a Sith Empire. Palpatine had talked a bit about it and had made the occasional snide comment suggesting Vader had an intense fascination with it; but he, himself, had never expressed much interest. It was unnecessary to seek out the past when there was a present Empire to defend. He was the Empire. I’d defended him.”

I shuddered as the memory and the icy sense of evil that came with it drifted through me. Shame followed.

I wasn’t sure how many times Karrde had said my name before it broke through my reverie and I was able to return my attention to him.

“You okay?”

“Sure, just… memories.”

“I’m not certain if it’s a good idea for you to go to this place.”

“I don’t think it is either, but I’m equally certain it was a terrible idea for Katarn to go there 9 weeks ago and not be in touch with anyone since.”

“Have you asked Jan?”

“She asked me.”

“Shavit!”

“Exactly.”

“The coordinates should already be in your navicomp.”

“Thanks, Karrde.”

“Be careful.”

i don’t buy that you genuinely understand how fucked up mage oppression is. f*nris fully supports genocide and doesn’t acknowledge that anyone but him has suffered.

I originally wasn't really planning on responding to this because, 1) it's been a really long week and i'm sleep-deprived; 2) I have no idea what brought this on and I low key suspect this is just trying to bait me, but you know what, I will answer it seriously and in good faith, because there are a few things I want to say.

I wrote a bit about mage oppression, I've reblogged other people's posts discussing and advocating mage rights, I'm staunchly pro-mage, anti-Circle, and I'm aware of how fucked up the Chantry and the Circles are as institutions that perpetuate abuse and ongoing genocide of mages. However, I need to emphasize that while the plight of mages can be used as a metaphor of systematic violence and discrimination that occurs in real life, it is in and of itself a completely fictional struggle. The information that can be gathered about it exist only within and is limited to the fictional context of the Dragon Age franchise. Saying that I don't genuinely understand a fictional struggle is kind of redundant because I'm obviously not a Circle mage in real life.

But I honestly don't know why you associated Fenris with the Chantry's abuse of mages when he's just as much of a victim of systematic oppression as Anders and the mages of Southern Thedas are. I suppose you are referring to Fenris joining the Templars in 'The Last Straw' if you don't have enough friendship/rivalry points with him, but that's a totally conditional outcome based on game mechanics. It's not unavoidable, and there are plenty of players who have World States where Fenris fights alongside Hawke to defend the mages.

Fenris also carries so much guilt over the Fog Warriors, and it's a source of trauma for him. He only confides the story in Hawke in Act 2 after you unlock 50% friendship/rivalry, and it's clear when he confides the story in Hawke he sees the killing of the Fog Warriors as a mistake that he deeply regrets. He does not want to kill. But all his memories of his previous life were erased when he got the lyrium markings, and for a long time the only sense of identity he had was being Danarius' weapon and executioner. It takes him a long time and a lot of strength and hard work to build a sense of identity past what Danarius tried to make him to be, and his character arc where he heals and grows past all that, and he raises his sword to help and defend the mages of the Gallows, is all the more significant and powerful, compared to the story outcome where all his healing and growth is undone and he reverts to just becoming an executioner again.

Fenris and Anders have that in common: Anders, too, was labelled as a "monster" by the Chantry just by being born a mage, and he had to work so hard to unlearn all that hateful rhetoric, and accept that his magic was a gift and not a curse from the Maker. Both Fenris and Anders are spending so much energy in rebuilding their identity past what their abusers tried to make them to be, and they both understandably lash out from the stress of it, but that doesn't mean either of them don't care about others or are blind to others' suffering.

I think the whole "Fenris vs mages" thing is short-sighted; he's suffered just as much and has very similar experiences and struggles as the mages of Southern Thedas have. Personally, I think Fenris and Anders should have teamed up to demolish the power systems that abuse and exploit their people together, but BioWare are cowards. 🙂

Bodies of fresh waters, especially rivers, have been foundational in the development of human civilization. With the necessity for people to live very near a water source, the flow of rivers has often been one of the most important factors in determining where a family or larger community could settle. Providing a supply of steady drinking water as well as opportunities for keeping crops watered and even allowing for transportation and trade.

Sometimes quiet and sometimes ferocious, rivers offer not only sustenance for life, but they also provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. From fishing and canoeing to white-water rafting and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), rivers can be sources of entertainment, exercise, and just a heap of good old fun! Just be sure to treat the water and the area surrounding the river with respect by protecting it from pollution and misuse.

Today, due to various issues including climate change and human interference, the water sources of the planet, including oceans, seas, lakes and rivers, are becoming compromised. Through pollution or by simply drying up, many of the world’s rivers are less healthy and less bountiful than they were even just a few years ago.

It was revolting how she kept trying to defend her racism by citing her father being an immigrant worker in UAE. Trust me, most people from privileged backgrounds like hers who migrate to Gulf countries from kerala are very different from the lower caste and exploited Indian labourers. south asians in the gulf do not have one shared experience ultimately. but i think many will notice the contempt people have for south asians, even if they don't face that contempt directly and have privileges protecting them from that level of racism.
