As @anseladams said, “the best camera to take a picture with, is the camera you have with you.” Someone good at their craft, can do it with whatever is handed to them. If you know me well, you know I’m a bit of a gear geek. Here, photographing @jimmygneccoofficial with a @leica_camera @leicacamerausa from @leicastoremiami. Using the #LeicaSTyp007 #120mmMacro. My groomer for the day was the amazing @sashahere, who has been the groomer for some of my favorite men’s portraits and my go to gal for shoot grooming. ———• @davidfarkasphotography was kind enough to let me play with this system to see what I could do with it. I wish I would have done some BTS set up images. Because this shot has about five or six lights and more flags than the UN assembly to give it the mood. It’s great when you #photograph a celebrity and you have time to really play. It’s rare you get the time to really experiment. Because no amount of light testing on an assistant can mimic the face and contours of the actual subject. And #JimmyGnecco has one of the most unique and angular faces. Now on to advertising work. I was called in to do all the collateral for a play called Four Dogs and a Bone. These were the posters placed around town and used to promote the show. It was a great play with a hilarious cast of super talented young actors. Made some life long friends out of and super proud of that day of work with this cast. Here, directing them in character to get their individual nuances to come across in the picture. Especially if you swipe right. To see the second picture. ——• Shot using a @hasselblad #H1 camera body with an #80mmLens and @phaseonephoto #P45 #DigitalBack. How To Break Into Fashion Photography In 15 Steps, Part 1!
Tumblr media
Fashion and art photographer Felange has previously written immensely popular articles about commercial shoots, personal projects and on the way to improve your photography. this point she is going to share 15 recommendations on the way to force an entry fashion photography. Here is the way to make it, in Jingna’s own words. In my last three articles, I talked about producing commercial and private photoshoots, and recommendations on the way to improve one’s photography. during this guide, I will be able to share my thoughts on the way to force an entry fashion photography. Fashion photography may be a highly exclusive and competitive industry. getting into requires dedication, commitment, hard work, and sometimes times, a touch of excellent luck and timing. there's no great secret or shortcut, it's getting to be a troublesome journey, and you want to be prepared for the long-haul. We will break this into 4 parts.
1. Understand Fashion:
Just as a photographer should skill to work a camera, a fashion photographer should possess a basic knowledge of fashion. an honest understanding of the topic will go an extended way towards helping your career, so I like to recommend studying the following:
– The history of fashion
 – Fashion from different periods and eras
– Designers, icons, and image-makers
– Fashion terminologies
– Hairstyles and makeup look
 – Fashion films and documentaries
– Current industry news
Many photographers attempt to shoot fashion without knowing what fashion is. It shows. Don’t let some reading hold you back from the likelihood of manufacturing better work. Most materials on these topics are readily available on the web now, so there's really no excuse.
Tumblr media
2. Read Magazines:
Learn Who’s Who Reading magazines may be a good way to seek out inspirational images and concepts for brand spanking new photographers. Take this point to curate the styles and work that you simply end up responding to. Identify traits within the photographs you wish and explore those for your own shoots. Save the names of individuals whose styles you are feeling for, so you'll work towards collaborating with them at some point. Also, confine mind that publications have different demographics and aesthetics from each other. Knowing who wants what is going to be very helpful in preparing an appropriate portfolio for the sorts of magazines that you simply want to draw a bead on within the future.
Tumblr media
3. Assist:
Assisting may be a good way to find out how shoots are done and meet people within the industry. If you select to try to to it full-time for a couple of years, that in itself might be a route for breaking into fashion, especially during a major fashion city where you get to experience large, high-end productions. confine mind, your job is to help. People won’t love it if you are trying to urge the stylist’s number unsolicited, or ask to be Facebook friends with the editor. Make friends with fellow assistants from the creative crew, as you'll have a way higher chance of collaborating and growing alongside them.
Tumblr media
4. Learn Fashion Lighting:
Regardless of whether you are doing any assisting, it’s important to find out the fundamentals of fashion lighting so as to urge the looks you would like. Here are a number of the foremost frequently used lighting modifiers in fashion photography:
– Beauty dishes: the quintessential modifier for beauty and fashion photography. the sweetness dish sits right in between the hard and soft lighting modifiers. It makes the skin glow beautifully. And sort of a hard light, it provides an exquisite contrast for sculpting features, but without making shadows look harsh along the sides.
 – Giant umbrellas: a really popular choice for fashion photography. While the sweetness dish is restricted by its spread and therefore the need for free of charge fill lights most of the time, giant reflectors are often used standalone due to their sizes
—the light spread: is extremely even, making it perfect for photographing models full length and maintaining an accurate depiction of the small print and hues of clothing which is vital to fashion photography, especially in commercial work.
 – Scrims: used for diffusing harsh light outdoors, but also wonderful for that commercial, glowy beauty shot in-studio. The scrim is more specific than the opposite lighting modifiers on this list, and more work to set up and shoot with. I suggest experimenting with it via rentals, it can definitely be a really worthy investment surely sorts of photography.
– Octabanks: probably my favorite. The name sounds cool and therefore the shape looks cool, but most significantly, they're highly versatile. I can easily use the Citibank for fashion, beauty, or portrait shoots. there's a gorgeous, even texture to the sunshine and shadows. and in contrast to square or rectangular softboxes, the form of the Citibank creates a more rounded, beautiful gradient within the background when used without background fills. It also gives you rounded, natural-looking catchlight in your subject’s eyes, unlike those of the more angular modifiers. lately, I exploit my Citibank interchangeably with the Profoto Umbrella Deep White XL. Mostly, I like them for my painterly-looking personal work.
Take the time to experiment with as many modifiers as you'll, so as to seek out those that employment for you. Use them together with each other, and/or with strip softboxes, snoots, flags, and v-flats. during this way, you'll get many various and interesting moods.

Commercial Photography sells a product.
Fashion Photography sells a lifestyle.
Editorial Photography sells a story.
Now for those of you interested to learn more, please read on. Just take note that the borders between those different types of photography are fluent and may not be as distinct as I describe them here. Nonetheless, I am sure that this article will help you to easily distinguish between them. First of all let me tell you that Fashion Photography and Commercial are usually summarized in the category of Advertising Photography, while Editorial Photography tends to be a category of its own. The reason being is that both Commercial and Fashion foremost try to sell a certain product, while Editorial Photography is more concerned with a story.
Commercial Photography As mentioned earlier, commercial photography predominantly sells a product. Hence, the emphasis of the whole shoot is on the product. That means that the lighting, the styling, and the background are usually very plain (not in a bad way). Think of catalog shoots where the models is standing in front of a white or an off-white background with maybe one light above camera and slightly to either side of the camera, and very natural looking make-up.
Fashion Photography Contrary to commercial photography, the emphasis in fashion photography does not lie on the garments, but on the mood and styling of the image. The garments are merely an accessory to convey a certain lifestyle. Therefore, the whole image is much more complex. You usually won’t see plain white or off-white backgrounds in fashion photography and the models are usually styled very dramatically with thick eyeliners, dramatic eye shadows, etc. With the increased complexity in styling also comes an increased complexity in lighting to make the image look more dramatic. While many commercial photographers only stick with one light for the model, fashion photographers tend to use a wide array of lights and lighting accessories. When doing a fashion shoot, I have used up to seven lights to get the dramatic look that I wanted, but I know photographers who use ten or more lights for fashion. That is not to say that a dramatic look can not be achieved with only one light, such as a beauty dish or an octabank - it’s about the effect of the lighting and not about how many lights you use to get that effect.
Editorial Photography Editorial photography is very similar to fashion photography in the sense that editorial photography is usually not about selling a product but something greater. In fashion photography it’s the lifestyle, in editorial photography it’s the story or the theme. As with fashion photography, the proper lighting is of utter importance. Let’s say you are shooting an editorial about a girl traveling. If the story is about the joy and the happiness, you would of course use very friendly and open lighting to emphasize this mood. If on the other hand the story is about the dangers of traveling, your lighting would be much more dramatic and instead of a beach on a sunny day, you may choose a dark alley.
Conclusion In essence, your style of photography depends on the clients’ needs and wants. If the client wants to sell a lifestyle associated with his product rather than the product itself, you will have to deliver fashion photography. If the client on the other hand just wants to show off his products (such as for a catalog shoot), you will have to deliver commercial photography. If the client already has a story or a script and just wants the photos to support the story, it’s your turn to get the mood of the story and deliver an editorial piece on it.

Your self portraits are so beautiful! Could you give any pointers or tips about how you set these up?
Thank you very much! A lot of them were taken before a portrait job, and I would just use myself as a stand-in to take them to make sure the lighting was looking like I wanted. So a lot of these were pretty ‘standard’ setups with 2-3 studio mono/strobe lights. Without referencing a specific self-portrait I can’t give any specific pointers, but if you tell me one you like I can explain and even draw out the lighting plot. But basically I always start out with a keylight and move on from there. The key is the most important and I always prefer a big soft light for that. I usually use an Indirect Octabank because of the really nice soft distribution of light. Then I’ll usually add a harder kicker or rim light. I also love using a ¼ Black Pro-Mist filter on the camera, I just love the look of the light halation it gives. Since I don’t know your level of photography knowledge I’m keeping this vague, and maybe simplistic, but always think about your main light source. I don’t think a lot of people think about the quality of light a lot. Is it harsh or soft? Warm or cool? For portrait, softer and warmer tends to be more flattering but it depends on the look you’re going for. I always love talking photography, so if you have more questions feel free to ask more!
