If, like me, you find a period hero’s most attractive feature is his personal army, meet Chu Beijie, one of four rival kingdoms’ god of war.

 This is the rival kingdom’s general He Xia, who CHJ has come to defeat. He Xia’s psycho ruler expects HX to hold the town against 100K army with 8K men and no reinforcements because he is the first but not the last ruler we will come across in this story who is a bonkers waste of oxygen. Side note - one of the things I love about this drama is that all the male characters in this are men and not boys. Like finally some adults have entered the chat. And they also look like they can actually lift a spear or drive a chariot because yes, in the first 10 min of ep 1, we get a chariot battle.

And this is Ping Ting, our FL, He Xia’s strategist. I forgot her backstory tbh but I know she feels gratitude to HX and his family for raising her. For the bulk of the story, they are vvv brother-sister until the drama oddly and last minute tries to throw in that he likes her but I think it is clear that is 10% driven by his nostalgia for a simpler time before he fell from grace and 90% by his obsession/rivalry with CBJ where he must win over him in any way he can, including getting the woman CBJ wants.

She has a plan which seems to be based on her somehow being a meteorologist who knows exactly where rain will hit and wash everything out (so they can lure CBJ and his dudes there.) Yeah whatever, who cares, roll with it. Short version is SHE SMART.

I love the intercut of CBJ grabbing his weapon and readying for battle as Ping Ting grabs hers and readies for hers (hers is a guqin with messages for He Xia in the music. Once again, roll with it, this is all shorthand for SHE SMART; you want realism watch a documentary on alfalfa farming.)

One of my more treasured headcanons is that Okada is fond of ramune -- this came from a fic a good friend wrote after my first Jaykada fic, ok google what's a synonym for rat where she spooled out a scene from Jay's young lion era, Okada teasing him a bit by challenging him to open the drink without knowing how to pop the glass marble. I referenced it again in leach and lift -- it's a little thing, but it's oddly important to me that when Jay sees or drinks ramune, he thinks of Okada.

🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?

Two of my most often bugbears: no line breaks (please for the love of god--), and poorly chosen epithets that read like they are blatantly trying to avoid just using the character's name for no reason (no "the blonde" "the other man" -- unless the POV character is talking about a stranger they just met that's no way to address their lover/object of affections, ffs).

There's been exceptions. There was a fic in the Disco Elysium fandom that was so goddamn good and unique that I overlooked the lack of line breaks (Focus, by HtonS) -- but tbh, you can tell just from the phrase "a quiet kind of crazy; he loves Harry with the focus of a sniper rifle’s scope" that this is worth a second shot.

And then the epithet bugbear is really easy to overcome: just only use epithets when you have a well thought out reason to. Well thought out epithets are hot and sexy and create and emphasize tension. Epithets for the sake of avoiding names is like, well, I am leaving this fic now I'm afraid.

Everyone always takes vacation together once a year, all 14 of them and their 15 kids, they all rent a private jet, thanks to sugar daddy Jay and his extremely extremely well paying job. It is on these vacations that their children grow closer, the ones that aren't in the same grade.

Each birthday within the group is celebrated with everyone, a minimum of at least 30 people, since Jay's sister will come when he asks her too, will come to each party; even if none of the kids friends come, they have a full party regardless. Sunghoon plans each and every party, wanting nothing but the best for all their kids, he even offers to help Sunoo and Niki plan their kids birthdays. He's also prepared for everything, like once his daughter wanted a Princess Elsa birthday party, but the princess he booked got the flu the day before and had to cancel, so instead of that Elsa, they had a 6 foot tall Elsa that looked oddly like Hoon singing Let It Go off-key, but his daughter had the time of her life at least.

Hoon's daughter is an absolutely princess and he's dreaded the day she comes home telling him she has a crush, like he knows how he reacted to his little sister having a crush, his daughter having a crush would be even worse. And worst it is, she comes home saying she's in love with one of the Sim boys and Hoon's heart just about stops, he loves Jake and all, they are besties, but she had to fall for his son. Hoon however encourages it, and little does he know that crush a 15 year old girl had on the 14 year old son of Jake, will turn into him walking her down the aisle with tears in his eyes to marry that son only ten years in the future.

Jungwon's daughters are all princesses as well, but not as bad Hoon's, he however dreads the love talks even more, I mean how can he not when he has to deal with 3 times compared to Hoon's 1. When his middle daughter comes home with hearts in her eyes, he'd terrified of what to say and of course their mom isn't around, so he has to deal with it. He's even more terrified when the name out of the girl's mouth is the name of Jay Park's son. What starts as a simple crush turns into Jay's son attending family dinner, taking Jungwon's daughter to prom, and before long asking Jungwon for his daughter's hand in marriage with tears in eyes. Jungwon might be a protective father, but deep within his heart, he knows there is no one that would love his daughter as much as Jay's son does, and he happily gives her away, crying tears of happiness at the wedding, that quickly turn to tears of sadness as it hits him he has to do this two more times.

All their children remain friends even once meeting adulthood, their friendship reminiscent of the friendship between their parents. Jake, Jay, Heeseung, and Sunghoon's sons are carbon copies of them, forming their own little group, the six of them being just as bad as their dads were. Meanwhile Sunghoon, Jungwon, and Heeseung's 5 daughters form a somewhat similar group, all the cousins being best friends.

And just, i tend to write them coming from a place of... established feelings? Like they're usually past the italicized Oh and are on the Now What Do We Do About It phase? 5. Answer it now! - for Red & White & Blue & Gold and/or for Entirely On Purpose Honestly what I always want to talk about is the most boring thing which is just the actual writing. I started Entirely on Purpose first, wrote the whole first chapter of it then got stressed out at the prospect of writing the sex scene at the end of the story so I decided to do something completely different and started Red&White, which I wrote in 4 days, easy peasy. It was so much fun to write something so light and fluffy. And then I went back to Entirely on Purpose and wrote the second chapter, then I got stressed out again about the sex scene and wrote I Wish I Was The Moon, which is oddly enough I think the horniest thing i've ever written despite it not being especially explicit, maybe i needed the warmup haha. But after THAT I finally buckled down and finished Entirely on Purpose, and the thing that unlocked that finally was the "Where is the line?" part, because then they go back and look at the evidence and it calls back to the first couple chapters which sort of justifies it being multichapter. I guess also I do just want to brag because while the actual like one paragraph of sex scene in that story stresses me out, I think the disarmament-as-foreplay section is actually so sexy and good and im very proud of it! 41.
