Top 5 Books of 2023!

I don't know if this blog even counts as a book blog anymore, but this year I read 60 books, which is twice as many as last year (and therefore also double my 2023 Reading Goal). I'm so pleased to have overcome my three year reading slump that has plagued me since Covid, and wanted to celebrate by... yknow. Actually doing a book blog post lmao. So here are my five favourite books of 2023!

1) Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

Not only was this book written Specifically For Me (faeries, rivals-to-lovers, academia), I just think it's a really good example of a cosy fantasy that is well-written and well-paced. The vibes are wholesome and fanfic-adjacent, but that doesn't mean that nothing happens. I'm not a fan of the new 'cosy' subgenre generally, but I think this book combined the right amount of comfort with action.

2) The Thousand Eyes by AK Larkwood

I read the Serpent Gates duology this year, and while the first book was good, the second book was just overwhelmingly brilliant. I loved the way this author manages time and character development - we follow all the characters for decades of their lives, so the final heroic triumphs in each of their stories just... hit different. It was such a wonderful book series, that left me feeling inspired to write.

3) The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty

I love Shannon Chakraborty's writing generally, but it was really fun (after the slowburn pining of the City of Brass books) to give her a far less pious and brazen heroine that resulted in an entirely different tone of story from her previous trilogy! I loved the narration and plot of this novel, also obsessed with this pirate milf and her demon boyfriend.

4) A House With Good Bones by T Kingfisher

I love T Kingfisher but I've never been able to get all the way through one of her horror books before - idk why, I just don't tend to vibe. But this book, which leaned more towards Gothic horror, twisted to fit a modern setting, was so gripping - I read it all in one sitting. I love the funky little bug archaeologist protagonist, who's first sign that her house is haunted is the fact that there are no insects in her mother's garden.

5) You and Me On Vacation by Emily Henry

I went on a beach holiday for the first time since Covid and proceeded to devour every single fucking book Emily Henry had ever written. Although I loved all of them, You and Me On Vacation was the one written Specifically For Me, which was surprising given that the other two most popular releases by her are about books (oh well...mutual pining, my beloved).

Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett

I read all of the Tiffany Aching books for the first time this year, based on a diagnosis from a pal that Wintersmith would be 'my' Terry Pratchett book. Reader, she was right... (which says more about me as a person than I'd like).

just saw your offer for book recs and would love some fantasy/sci fi books, it seems like we have similar taste. i just finished nk jemisin's broken earth trilogy, and also loved the city we became by her.

Aha, I am at work right now and thus do not have my bookshelves at hand to make sure I'm not missing something blindly obvious. However, I will start you off with these:

The Rook and Rose trilogy by M.A. Carrick (The Mask of Mirrors, The Liar's Knot, Labyrinth's Heart). Yes, this is the series I have been screaming about nonstop for the past few weeks and thus craftily suckering unsuspecting passersby into reading. An AMAZING world, an OT3 who own my entire ass, lots of political intrigue, cultural and social commentary, a unique magic system, and also plenty of humor. It really has it all. I continue my one-man quest to make this fandom bigger. Ahem.

The Green Bone trilogy by Fonda Lee (Jade City, Jade War, Jade Legacy). Another fantastic fantasy series that NEEDS more readers. Inspired by Chinese/Hong Kong kung-fu movies, set in a gritty modern universe, kind of like the Godfather but with magical jade-wielding families. Tons of discussion of empire, culture, violence, appropriation, power, war, family, Asian identity, more. They're likewise nice and long to keep you busy.

The Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty (The City of Brass, The Kingdom of Copper, The Empire of Gold). Another you-gotta-read-this trilogy (yes, I have many of them). Set in the 18th-century Middle East and the magical djinni kingdom of Daevabad. Politics, empire, religion, history, intrigue, magic, scheming families, ancient wars, and my most beloved, Muntadhir al-Qahtani. What is not to love.

The Priory of the Orange Tree and its standalone prequel, A Day of Fallen Night, by Samantha Shannon. Absolute doorstopper (800+ pages apiece) epic-with-dragons-and-medieval-worlds fantasy, like Game of Thrones if Game of Thrones was a) good b) gay c) feminist and d) had people of color. She is also the author of the Bone Season series (four books thus far) which is a unique blend of futuristic sci-fi and fantasy set in an alternate totalitarian London and a ruined Oxford.

Winter's Orbit and Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell. Two M/M space opera romances (set in the same universe, but can be read independently). She got her start as a fanfic writer and it shows; these are both delightful, plotty, funny, and full of sassy gay disaster homosexuals in space.

A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (I have read the first one, need to read the second one). Historian of medieval Byzantium writes space opera set in Space Constantinople which is also Space Tenochtitlan. Explores language, history, memory, power, identity, assimilation, and more, and is also very funny.

Autonomous, The Future of Another Timeline, and The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz. High-concept social-commentary dystopian science fiction; of the three, Terraformers (the newest one) might be my favorite. They're not related so you can read them in whatever order.

Two books that I have not read yet but I really want to: Swim Home to the Vanished by Brendan Shay Basham and To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose. Both are fantasy novels by Native American authors; Basham's is magical realism and Blackgoose's is about a Native American dragon-rider facing assimilation at an English (Anglish) boarding school.

Likewise coming soon and I am excited: The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by Samit Basu. Middle Eastern-inspired fantasy, cyberpunk, techno-magic. In space!

There are definitely more that I will get home and be like oh wait yeah. But this should get you started.

Ugh I loved the slow building of the friendship between Eddie and reader, the angst of him knowing that her boyfriend was trash but not wanting to cross a line, the passion between them. As i wrote when i reblogged it, “Screaming, crying, laughing, smiling, CRYING 😍🥹😭🥵 “ 

take me higher ❤️‍🔥 by @munson-blurbs — i will never get enough Argyle stories, and bug has written some of my favorites. this is one i reread all the time (i’m clearly a sucker for a good babysitter fic) because i love the way Argyle feels so real in it. The flirtation, the banter, those sweet little moments of awkwardness, it’s all truly 10/10. A special runner-up mention goes to this blurb which features best friend! Argyle and hair pulling and is just … just a dream. 

bad idea  ❤️‍🔥 by @abibliophobiaa — if i’ve said it once, i’ve said it a million times: Steve Harrington is a menace. Best friend!Steve gets his hands on the romance novel you’re reading and decides to tease you with all of the flirty things he picked up from it. Steve is at peak menace in this, which means i fell hard and fast. 

this is gonna sting by @lovebugism — this one was written so, so beautifully. Sweet, lovestruck Eddie afraid to open up and confess his feelings always hits me hard and the imagery in this was just so stunning that i think about it a lot. I aspire to write a sentence as beautiful as “he leaks a bright red truth right across from you and carries everything he feels about you in raging scarlet scrapes.”

Steve Harrington Boat Smut ❤️‍🔥 by @lovebugism — God, what a glorious day it was when those pictures of Joe Keery on a boat in Italy made their way online. Anyway, this is exactly what is says on the tin and exactly what we all needed in that moment. 

This story by @pouringmyheartoutforpaper — sweet, sweet lovesick Stevie who is determined that things will be different in this relationship meets reader who has some insecurities about how slow their relationship is progressing. Gorgeous, sweet, fluff that will give you the warm fuzzies. 

The Tune-Up ❤️‍🔥 by @roanniom — Issa, queen of smut! This mechanic Eddie story is so hot that it will have you contemplating whether or not you should mess with a few things on your car, just for an excuse to come visit him in the shop. (Also just read all of her stuff. It’s so, so good.) 

Happy Mother’s Day, Steve Harrington ❤️‍🔥 by @roanniom — STEVE. HARRINGTON. BREEDING. KINK. WILL MAKE BRAIN GO BRRRRRRR. I rest my case. 

The Riddles Three ❤️‍🔥by @blueywrites — You cannot convince me that Eddie “Dungeon Master” “Lord of the Rings nerd” Munson would not try and do a Gollum impression in bed. As a firm believer in goofy, weird bedroom antics, this story is canon and I will hear nothing else about it. 

Smoke and Cherry Pop Rocks ❤️‍🔥 by @somnambulic-thing — want to have your heart broken in the best way possible? HERE YOU GO. A gorgeous, tender, emotional story about regrets and moving on and finding the courage to open up, even if it’s a little too late. 

Classified ❤️‍🔥by @pullhisteeth — considering the slightly absurd premise — putting an ad in the paper to lose your virginity — this was gorgeously grounded and real. Eddie is so lovely and gentle in this and it was just a treat to read. 

monster under the bed ❤️‍🔥by @eddiemunsons-missingnipple — i’m going to be honest: this is monsterfucking. But if that’s something you’re into, you *need* to read this. It will make you go feral.

River Monster! Eddie ❤️‍🔥by @courtingchaos — brb, wandering along the banks of all the rivers near me in an attempt to lure River Monster!Eddie to come out and mate with me. Again, it is monsterfucking, but … come on. It’s so good. (Meg also has some of the best Gator Tillman fics out there. They’re hot and weird and wild in all of the best ways. 

My Goyle Fiend ❤️‍🔥by @bettyfrommars — You want monsters? You go to Betty. Trust me on this. Her gargoyle series was the first that I read from her and I was hooked instantly. She’s written werewolves, vampires and is currently working on a brilliant series where Eddie works at the Nightmare Factory and appears in your dreams as all kinds of different ghosts and ghouls. If things that go bump in the night aren’t your taste, her biker! Eddie and Steve series are also great, as well as her beautiful gigalo!Eddie story. 

I Can See You ❤️‍🔥by @fairyysoup — I don’t know that there are enough words to express how much I loved this story, The not-so-unrequited affection, the building tension, the way Steve and the reader keep coming together over the years, Steve’s big grand gesture at the end … just so beautiful and moving and steamy. I’ve already reread it like 4 times. 

Stranger Things Adjacent  a.k.a. Joseph Quinn characters 

The Hat Shop Girl (Ralph from Timewasters) ❤️‍🔥by @rehfan — Y’all this story is *so* good. It packs so much into this love story — issues of class, grief, sexuality, power dynamics — in a way that just makes their journey so much richer and more interesting. This version of Ralph is perfect, soft and sweet and well-meaning but also the way his confidence builds throughout the story is delightful and the smut between them is so delicious and delightful. 10/10. 

Knight in Shining Armor (Billy Knight) ❤️‍🔥by @rehfan — I’m gonna say it: This is my favorite Billy Knight fanfic of all time. So soft and tender, it handles Billy’s mental health in a way that feels really empathetic and realistic while also letting the audience indulge in the thing everyone really wants: to give sweet Billy all the love in the world. 

This Billy Knight Masterlist ❤️‍🔥by @pollenallergie — I could not pick just one of these amazing Billy fics. pollenallergie is, in my mind, *the* authority on all things Billy Knight and she’s got it all. Her writing is soft and steamy and touching all at the same time and I love it all. 

Worth It (Ralph from Timewasters) by @wheels-of-despair — Do you want to feel *all* of the delightful warm fuzzies as you daydream about the perfect life with sweet Ralph? This is the story for you. Every chapter is delightful and touching and will make you feel *all* of the feelings. I love it so much.

To all my mutuals who have no fucking idea what Shades of Magic by V. E. Schwab is, and are watching large chunks of their dash descend into Nick never shuts up about it: I'm so sorry ;) Now, I mean, if we're mutuals, I think this entire series would be your jam, for one reason or another. In no particular order:

--there is a genderfluid pirate who comes off the streets of 1819 London and bullies her way into a magic adventure and just! keeps! going out and kicking ass and taking names and winning everything and honestly, it's the best nonbinary/trans power fantasy swear to God even as I'm like: for the sake of being a fully rounded character, my beloved pirate thief really should have some! consequences.

--there's an insanely through-the-roof powerful magician who's been deeply broken by privation and torture and poverty but still wants desperately to save his world that is so! reminiscent of Thorin fucking Oakenshield it hurts in the best way!

--and speaking of Thorin Oakenshield and the first ship that sucked me viciously into fandom: Dworin people this same magician had this wonderful doomed attempt to rule beside a king and it has all the best Dworin vibes with this amazing personality inversion because there's all the loyalty and affection and the king/general/knight stuff but it's the king! who's outgoing and social and magnetic and our insanely broken magician who's quiet and reflective and it captures the very best of the dynamic without feeling like it's repeating the ship and I need all of y'all to ship Holland Vosijk/Ros Vortalis stat—dear God we don’t get these two until book 3, but oh! Oh it’s so worth it. (oh god sometimes I just sit and drool over the fic @bodysnatch3r and @mainecoon76 would write.

--and let me not forget, the Percival Graves vibes. @maggieandthedragon is another one I just make grabby hands thinking of contributions she’d make to this fandom. Holland is a man who tries desperately to respect life, made party to utterly inhuman actions via torture—the Percy and Gellert parallels, they are strong. And Holland/Vor has some Percy/Thes vibes dear God the golden youth Holland can never recapture.

--for all of you for whom we bonded over geopolitics, power is at the heart of this series. So much of why White London becomes! the way it is is because Red took it upon itself to trap them between demons and a lack of magic for fear of Red's own downfall and then weep endlessly because you all hate us/want revenge. No shit! they do. Schwab handles this well, greying the morality throughout the series, though she hasn't yet done what my socialist egalitarian heart craves and had someone smash open all the doors Red London slammed shut--but don't worry. the fic writers are there to handle that shit. Even if the source doesn't delve as much into colonialism/imperialism as I would like, oh! the themes are there.

--there is sibling affection powerful enough to drag people back from the brink of death. There is a gay pirate who is the homage to every spy novel ever. There’re swordfights and couples over forty and a million other things I love. It's not a perfect series, but I wouldn't love it this much without its flaws.

Fantasy Book Review: The Tarot Sequence (Books 1-3) by K.D. Edwards

Okay, I read these kind of randomly, not really sure what I was getting into, and oh my god. Oh my god!! Okay, so most of the sci-fi/fantasy books I have read other than these were written by AFAB authors in their 20s and 30s. Which is great, and fine, but that’s a fairly limited perspective. These novels were written by an asexual man in his forties (sorry Keith, just sort of guessing on your age here lmao) and is it weird to say that it’s kind of refreshing to read a mlm romance actually written by a queer man? No, I don’t think so. These books, despite the dark topics they sometimes cover, feel like warm coziness to me. Reading these books feels like following along with a group of your beloved friends. God. I love them. 

Summary time! In a world in which Atlantis was a secret society of demigods called the Arcana (all named after tarot cards) before being destroyed in a civil war with humanity, the remaining Atlantean society has relocated to the island formerly called Nantucket. Rune St. John is the last son of the Sun Court, the rest of the Sun Court destroyed in a mysterious attack that left Rune with emotional, mental, and physical scars. Rune and his Companion (think platonic soulmate meets bodyguard), Brand, hire out their work essentially as mercenaries to scrape by. When a son of Lady Justice goes missing, Rune and Brand are hired to find him. Also, they acquire an orphaned teenager? Are they fathers now? They might be fathers now. 

These characters guys. Holy shit. They are perfect to me. K.D. Edwards was really out here like, what if I just… smash every toxically masculine stereotype out there? What if I make a snarky bodyguard character who unabashedly loves his best friend? What if these two men who have known each other all their lives are not afraid to be open about how important they are to each other and how much they genuinely LOVE each other? What if I make a romantic interest who is patient and kind and loving and not at all threatened by the relationship between his boyfriend and his boyfriend’s oldest and most important relationship? What if I create a relationship between these three men that blurs the lines between romantic and platonic?? What if I create an urban fantasy society in which queerness is normal and accepted, and where polyamory is normal and accepted? What if I make a group of characters who need a family and then FIND ONE WITH EACH OTHER???? WHAT. THEN????? (then we all cry, that’s what)

FUCK! 

These books are fun, witty, full of monsters and villains, but also some of the most heartwarming characters and relationships I’ve ever read??? Like, god. These are some of the few books that I have bought both audio book and e-book copies because I could not put them down. I *had* to be reading them, if I were at home, or at work, or in the car. And as soon as I finished them, I picked up the first one and reread them. 

This series is planned to be a trilogy of trilogies, with books 1-3 currently finished, and book 4 being written right now. I am so excited for more of this series, I can’t even tell you. Dear god. 

There is some dark content covered in these books, specifically based around what happened to the Rune on the night when his father’s court was destroyed, so if you have any questions about trigger warnings, don’t hesitate to ask. 

These books are an absolute DELIGHT. They are the queer fantasy I’ve always wanted to read, because Edwards understands that what makes the queer community special is the COMMUNITY. It’s about finding and CHOOSING your family, bitch!

okay. so. im getting into twisted wonderland

and. can i just ask. why does the story actually seem cool? also DESIGNS??? WOAHHH.

Maybe I'm biased, I've had the story a bit spoiled to me cause. Okay so I got into Twisted Wonderland because I was reading Katekyou Hitman Reborn! fics, and there's this series filled with Skull being characters from Twisted Wonderland (and other stuff ofc). And I decided, why not, and it seemed so cool (I adore bamf skull), and also. Honestly. My favorite is Riddle Rosehearts. (Also the 'OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!' ability. 1. Ayo CoLLAR ME PLS HAha- 2. I don't know if it gets more extreme but in the fics its been used to kill a bunch of people at once because, y'know, off with your head. The ability seems very cool.)

honestly i have no complaints about the story?? and maybe thats on me because the most experience i have with japanese visual novels is they're all romance games. and i really appreciate it not being that. HELL YEAH. give me my fantasy adventure with disney villains everyday!

i cannot tell you how much i LOVED Ever After High. And then there was Descendants (i think it got so popular that Ever After High got discontinued, which NOOOO)

Anyway I got so obsessed with Descendants. And then I went to a store and there was Descendants stuff and I bought a lot. I don't know why but I even bought like a Mal wig?? I don't even know why, I don't cosplay.

I'm not sure whose related to who and where exactly it fits in the universe (like, for example, if Riddle's related to the queen of hearts or something, no idea), but there's basically these dorms for seven of these like.. villains. Introduction to who they are in the prologue imo is kinda portraying it in a way that you want to be inspired by them? Like, oh, Scar just wanted equality between the Hyenas and the Lions (I think? I haven't watched that movie in so long), and while technically that's kind of true.. I think other stuff happened but I honestly can't remember.

Or like... The. evil queen? I think that's from Snow White's story. Uhh, that she wanted to be the fairest in all the land and was willing to do whatever it takes, which that was something to be admired about. Honestly don't hang on my word if you don't know about the game's story and reading this anyway because I don't remember a lot from the movies.

(ALSO for once not a story where we're assumed to be like, a girl? again, my only experience is those romance games sadly, but oh my god. I've been trying to get back into Mystic Messenger cause I never had the patience for it before, but the

lisa smiles at him a bit too slyly when he spends more than a couple minutes browsing the section, his large hands scowering the pages and summaries of what he could essentially project his daydreams of you two together. there has been a collection recently added to the shelves, some publishing house all away from inazuma writing about obsessive love and the main character's lovestricken determination to be with their beloved at all costs.

oh my, it has one of the highest ratings. surely the voyeuristic tendencies of the male lead as well as the crossing of multiple boundaries have guaranteed such excellent reviews from the general public. he reaches out to check the material for himself when a familiar hand lays on top of him for the same idea, and your eyes nearly pop out of your head when you see the handsome master of the dawn winery staring back at you.

before any words are spoken, you take your leave. such a shame, you were anticipating the latest novel! the redhead takes one last look over at the book. so this is what you're into.. interesting. It wouldnt hurt to take a few notes of what you're supposedly into.

oh, imagine how utterly embarrassed you would be that your fingers have brushed diluc's over this latest offering - that you've given away your tastes and proclivities (ones, you are certain, are strange and off-putting) in front of the most handsome man in town. what if he thinks all the worse of you for finding such a thing romantic - he was at the shelf too, of course, but perhaps he was simply browsing--

you go home with thoughts of that series love interest in your mind; a dark brooding figure who, in your fantasies, is always a redhead. standing watch silently outside of your window, watching your every move, coveting you like something precious--

and you do not for a moment realise that this same plot is playing out in real life.

I saw you post on seasons 1 through 4 of Dr. Who and I wanted to know more about your accidentally Christian pile. What are some other works do think unintentionally emphasized Christian doctrines or morals?

Ooooooh, really good question!!

So the first thing that comes to mind here is Marvel’s Agents of Shield--each season has it's own story arc and themes, so it's hard to pin down just one thing here, so I'll just talk about a few. I'll talk about the obvious one first: Season 3 in particular has a lot of Christian imagery (though in this case, it's definitely on purpose). You see a flash-forward of a cross necklace at the beginning of the season floating in a spaceship in space right before it blows up, and then you watch as that necklace get passed around from person to person, knowing that whoever ends up with it at the end of the season is going to die. I won't spoil anything more, other than to say that it results in quite a bit of Christ/crucifixion imagery and themes.

Other than this, there's a lot about the redemptive power of love (Fitzsimmons my beloved), individual guilt and how to handle it, how to let go of shame, the inevitable defeat of evil--I know there's more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. (AOS girlies/gents, feel free to chime in!) Additionally, one of the main characters explicitly a Christian, and while he's not portrayed perfectly, he's never ridiculed for it by the other characters or the narrative, which is a breath of fresh air. There are of course some things I don't approve of (prepare to have your skip button ready once or twice in the earlier seasons), but it's still a fantastic show, and by far the best show Marvel has ever come out with.

Harry Potter’s a pretty obvious one—Harry has to sacrifice himself and be fully willing to die to kill Voldemort, the fight with the basilisk in Chamber of Secrets has some Biblical parallels—but I’m fairly certain that these themes were deliberate, so I suppose they don’t really count. But they do to me, so 😂

Star Wars is another big one for me—of course, a la George Lucas’s original vision, SW is much more directly influenced by Buddhism, but I find that it often can’t help dipping into Christian themes. I find this is especially true with anything that has Dave Filoni’s name attached, likely because he in turn is pretty influenced by Tolkien and Lewis (Ahsoka is meant to parallel Gandalf, the World Between Worlds in Rebels was inspired by The Magician’s Nephew’s Wood Between Worlds, etc). Mandalorian season 3 in particular blew me away—baptism! Redemption! Rebirth! Mandalorian denominations/sects! Seriously, I was expecting them to come down hard on the strange rules that sect holds themselves to and for Mando to completely reject them—but they didn’t?? It was SO fascinating.

Kingdom Hearts is probably one of my favorite demonstrations of John 15:13: “greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Otherwise, I can’t really think of any super prevalent Christian themes I noticed, but that one is just so strong and so important to the themes of the series, I couldn’t not mention it.

Final Fantasy XV has something similar going for it—although what I’m going to say has MAJOR spoilers, so if don’t want to be spoiled, go ahead and skip this (and play the game because it’s great—but Noctis having to willingly sacrifice himself by sitting on a throne in order to purify his kingdom is as blatant as you get. For crying out loud, he’s called the One True King. However this only holds true for the base game—the dlc’s (except for Episode Prompto, but that’s just because it doesn’t really apply to that plotline, also it’s incredible) and the novel in my opinion kind of ruin it.

Legend of Zelda is an interesting one, because it is of course heavily inspired by Shinto, but a few Christian themes sort of snuck their way in there. In Skyward Sword (oh and spoilers for Skyward Sword). Hylia, though certainly not meant to be a direct Christ figure, chooses to be reborn as a Hylian (basically a human) in order to save her people. The difference here is that Zelda does not know that she’s Hylia, and she never regains her goddess status (at least presumably until she dies of old age), but it’s an interesting parallel nonetheless. Also, there’s a famously creepy cutscene in Twilight Princess where we get the story of how the Twili were banished from Hyrule for dabbling in dark magic, and the sequence has always reminded me of the Fall.

Those were just a few that I thought of off the top of my head—I’m sure there are more, but that’s all that’s coming to me at the moment 😂

January 2024 Reads:

I'm trying to write more again so I'm writing down all of my candid thoughts on all the books I read this year. Starting off strong this year with 4 books read. Well over my average for the month despite the new job, partner, and constant new layer of responsibility that gets added every few weeks it seems. They were all enjoyable at the least and fucking bangers at best so let's get started.

1.) Defiant by Brandon Sanderson

This was a great finale to an already beloved series of mine. It scratched all the right itches and I left satisfied. It wasn't absolutely mind-blowing but it served its purpose. I enjoyed how much Spensa grew over these four books and found myself finally loving her instead of just liking. One of the downsides for me was how much it relied on the reader knowing the Skyward Flight novellas to fully get 100% of it. I know that fans will probably read every bit available but if I were just some random bloke I would've just gotten the four main novels. I may go and read the follow up series if I run out of other stuff to read in the future but for now I'm happy where it ended.

2.) The Will of the Many by James Islington

Best read of the month, probably year if I'm being honest. I was enthralled with this book. I put off plans with friends to read this book. I read this book during my lunch break and in between parent-teacher conferences. Absolute banger. Read this book.

It was the best iteration of an Academy that I've read and enjoyed all facets of it from the academic to social to political and everything in between. I didn't know who I could trust I didn't know what to believe everything about the mysteries of the world had my mind racing.

And there were characters and moments in here that will stay for me for years to come just like all my favorites in my mind's hall of fantasy greats. I can't wait to see what else is in store.

3.) Pines by Blake Crouch

I listened to this one and couldn't tell if that helped it or not. This definitely sounded like something that was written to be adapted into something. Had a cool premise and a mystery I was genuinely hooked by but something about the written descriptions and mannerisms that just struck me as weird. Like there were definitely some lines that people said that would never be uttered from a person irl it seems. If you know the story it may have been intentional but I'm gonna assume not. We didn't need that to clue us off that something was off here.

Despite how it seems above I actually liked it and continued on to the 2nd book (which I'm almost done with at the time of writing and am enjoying it so much more than this one). First time for me also diving into Crouch without realizing I had other stuff by him on my TBR so looking forward to more.

4.) Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

This was something I didn't really think to read until I saw it available at the library and was like, "oh, I recognize this cover. I think my friend told me about this I'll check it out." and I'm so happy I did. This was such a short and sweet novel that told all the story it needed to. I feel like it had the impact of a book even twice its length. I didn't need much to get invested in the different characters and the weaving timelines to solve this anomaly that wasn't even so major in the first place. But it just had me hooked. Read it in like 3 days. I love Emily's writing too. It's so artistically succinct(?) and there's always a jab in there. Like a line of text that just hits and rings so true and resounds regarding injustices in the world and especially during the times the snippets take place in.

50 Years of Island Books: The Staff

This 50 Years of Island Books series is about to reach the grand finale, because November is only a few weeks away and it's almost time to pop the champagne. Since April, I've talked to booksellers and owners from years past, sales reps, and many beloved local authors to paint a picture of what Island Books has meant to the community and how it evolved into the place it is today.

Now, I'm turning my attention to the people who show up hour to hour, in the here and now, to make the store the living, breathing wonderland that it is and will be in 2023 and beyond. On a rainy Monday when the store was closed for cleaning, I pulled them aside for some heart-to-hearts.

So many times we come in and say a quick hi to these friendly booksellers, the face of a familiar place we know and love, but it's rare we think about who they are as people and what they think about as they work. I've known many of them for years and have watched the staff evolve. From my little perch, I can honestly say that they put so much love into what they do, and that our island community wouldn't be the same without them.

To our Island Books booksellers—we love and appreciate all of you. Truly. Now let's get into it.

Miriam: I'm so happy to have a chance to talk to each of you. Let's start with, which book category excites you the most, and why?

Brad: Any day I can turn someone onto the Russians, like Checkhov, Tolstoy, or Dostoevsky, or someone less read, like Pushkin, is a great day. Jorge Luis Borges is a favorite for customers looking for a literary blend of fantasy and science fiction literary. He's Argentinian, and his voice differs from many other classic authors. There are so many large and small presses putting out reprints.

Becca: I'm largely a sci-fi, fantasy, and romance person. I’m not averse to other categories, but the books that I drop everything to read tend to be one of those genres (or fairy-tale retellings). I also love curling up with a good Middle Grade or Young Adult fiction.

Lori Robinson: The genre I get the most energy around right now is romance. I read widely, but I have my favorite places I like to land, although every once in a while something different catches my eye.

Caitlin: I love to sell the books I like to read: short story collections, literary fiction, translated fiction, poetry, some memoirs, and art and ballet history. When I first started at Island Books, a lot of people said, “Oh, short stories don’t sell here.” But I'm happy to say that isn't the case anymore.

Nancy: I like to read literary fiction and good narrative nonfiction, generally science and history.

Lillian: I think people would assume that I read a ton of kids books, but I’m around them so much and read them for work—at least 600 picture books a year (!), so for my own pleasure, I read mostly mystery, romance, and fantasy. 

Miriam: As a group, you have a wide variety of tastes, which is great for customers. Now, tell me about your proudest accomplishments at Island Books.

Brad: I love to draw signs. I’m a part-time illustrator with a cartoony style, maybe because I’m a big graphic novel fan.

Becca: It’s fun to have become a person that customers ask for book recommendations. -- I still feel fairly new (2 years under my belt now), but to have become an integral part of something I love so much is awesome.

Lori Robinson: Mine would be the year we sold over 200 copies of Amy Snow by Tracey Rees in six months because I kept hand selling it. It was the first time I realized the impact a bookseller could have on the success of a book that wasn’t getting all the media attention.

Caitlin: Mine would be proving that our customers do like short stories.

Nancy: I'm proud of the many stories over the years that I could bring home to my family, and tell them how we found the perfect book for a customer’s dying mother or a kid having an issue, things like that. And the funny ones—we used to have a customer who loved to give a certain book to his lady friends. Whenever we saw that title on order, everyone knew he had a successful date! I think he single-handedly kept that book in print. I sure didn’t have those kind of stories when I worked as a web designer.

Miriam: There's no job quite like bookselling, is there? Those are great answers. Can you give an example of when you felt a deep connection with a customer or the community?

Becca: When a kid comes in and says they like fairy tales and you realize that kid is exactly who you were as a small child. Then you give them a pile of books and they buy all of them and you’re like, yes, I’ve found mini-me! Or having someone call back or come in the next time and say, "What you gave me for my grandkid was exactly what I needed and they loved it".

Lori Robinson: I have a certain customer who I remember coming to our door during the pandemic and saying, “Just pick two books out for me, I’ll read anything you want." That trust is challenging. When I don’t know someone, I really want to take care of it and give people good choices. Anytime someone buys a book that I write a blog about, that warms my little heart. And I love when someone comes in and I think, I would never guess you’d read this book, and then they say, “I love this book!” I just love that we all get to like what we like.

Caitlin: One of our customers who loves short stories—having that customer come to me for recommendations is really nice, and an honor because she’s also a big reader, a school librarian, and a mother. I love sharing a common love of certain books with individual customers.

Nancy: Here's my quirky fact - This will be the second 50th anniversary of a bookstore I’ve attended this year. The other one I went to recently was for Red and Black Books, where I used to work with former Island Books bookseller Kay Wilson. I saw her there. Talk about long-time connections.

Lillian: I actually have a really clear one. Earlier this year, a mom came in and said that her queer child felt welcomed and happy to be at the store, and she was so thankful that her child had thought to mention how welcome they felt. I almost started to cry on the spot and it makes me tear up thinking about it. 

Miriam: That's amazing. It's nice to know that your experiences in the store are just as meaningful to you as they are to the customers. I love hearing this good stuff, and I’m also interested in hearing about a challenge you overcame.

Brad: At first I would have said, wrapping, and it’s something I didn’t expect. I had no idea! People on Mercer Island really know how to give gifts. Drawing quickly is also a challenge.

Caitlin: I wish more people would give books I like a try. People will come in and want to read whatever is the bestselling book. What I say is, “What are you in the mood to read?” and then go from there, because not everyone needs to read bestsellers or classics. They’re not in school. Read what you want.

Nancy: There are a lot of books! We like a lot of books, but more and more books come out and we don’t have the space to shelve everything. We can order it, but we can’t stock everything. So every quarter, it’s a huge challenge to say, these are the books we’re going to commit to. 

Lillian: The honest challenge is to stay interested after reading so many books over so many years. What I realize after I go through another season is that the books are different, that’s the great thing about books. Sometimes customers want the same thing over and over, and those things become classics and that’s fine, but for the majority of customers and definitely for me, I have to see what’s different, otherwise, it can get repetitive.

Miriam: Great answers that speak to so many years on the job. Here's another question. How would your colleagues describe you?

Brad: Friendly and kind, I would hope. A good listener.

Becca: Enthusiastic and willing. Laurie says I’m sassy. I'm also the youngest and got sucked into the social media part of things pretty quick, so I get a lot of the, hey, younger generation, technology, things.

Lori Robinson: I know that I’m pretty calm and unflappable when it comes to dealing with whatever you’ve got to deal with.

Caitlin: Oh, ha, here’s a note from Cindy about this question. She said I’m literary and quirky, and a name-dropper. And I was like, “Yeah…I think that’s pretty accurate.”

Nancy: Brilliant, friendly, kind to everyone, no-nonsense. You know. All the good stuff.

Lillian: I’m definitely the squeaky wheel. I guess what they’d say is that I get things done. That’s the thing. I get things done.

Miriam: These answers cracked me up (including the ones that aren't making it to print!). OK, let's do a fantasy question now. What would you do with it if someone gave you one million dollars to improve the book business and/or promote literacy?

Brad: Open more dream bookstores and do them the way I always wanted.

Becca: The industry is already diversifying the characters and cultures in books, and I’d find ways to support that. Everyone deserves to see themselves in what they read.

Lori Robinson: I’d love to do something to fight book bans. Working at the bookstore has opened my eyes to what banning books does, and I appreciate that it’s changed my view on experiencing things rather than being afraid of them.

Caitlin: I’d start with free nationwide healthcare for people earning under a certain amount of money. I grew up in a household filled with books, and I think it’s important for kids to grow up with their own books, and that takes parents earning a living wage. 

Nancy: This is because I’m such a nuts-and-bolts person, but I’d get rid of dust jackets and have everything be paper on board so that we have less damages to deal with. Saves money and they’re annoying.

Lillian: I’d reverse this trend of prices going up because that would make independent bookstores more accessible to people who shop online because it’s cheaper. There are people who can’t afford to shop in independent bookstores, and if you remove that barrier, it would just open up that handpicked-for-you element that can be so special for kids, and adults too.

Miriam: Ah, if only booksellers ran the world. How about this. If I were to work with you in the store for a month, what would I learn about bookstore life that I can’t possibly gather from a brief interview?

Becca: A lot of people don’t know that we get new releases every single Tuesday, or that we get books sent to us a week before they come out so we have them on the actual release day. So many books, all the time.

Caitlin: Customers are pretty savvy. Obviously, there’s that old idea that booksellers and librarians are just sitting around reading all day, but it’s not true, there’s a lot of work. It’s physical work, you’re constantly bending and putting things away.

Nancy: Well I’m sure everyone says, we do not have time to read while we’re working. They also might not know just how much we really know our customers. Sometimes when we’re going through a catalog, we’ll say, “Oh, I know who will like that book.” And we get that book for that particular person in our community. The two big trends in the past years are the normalization of queerness in fiction and nonfiction, so we really have a tiny LGBTQ section, because, there aren’t really any queer novels anymore—they’re mainstream. I love that. The other thing is Tiktok. It’s been crazy for us getting younger women and girls in the store. And we wish Tiktok could work that way for boys too. We now see these backlist authors getting a second wind because of Tiktok and that’s so interesting as a trend. The third thing that everyone is talking about is AI. One of the things that we have on our radar and it’s been coming up in the book world is fake books. We’re seeing them more and more in the travel and cookbook categories. Our job as curators is more important than ever. We’re working with reputable publishers, we’re looking at every book that comes in the store, we’re recommending books. I think with AI, people are becoming even more important. 

Lillian: How much time we spend just putting books away and tidying up and keeping things alphabetized. I can’t tell you how much we hum the alphabet to keep bookshelves in order. And working with me in particular, I’d say that I come across much more serious than I really am. 

Miriam: You all have to be so organized. Let's move on to my final question. What does being part of a small business within a community mean, and how do you play a role in it?

Brad: One of the best things about working at Island Books is how the community supports the store. And it’s not just about books. We’re a hub. About six months after I started, a woman came in and said her car wouldn’t start. Does anyone know how to jump a car? And I said, I can help. She didn’t know me, but she knew I worked at Island Books, so she knew we'd pitch in.

Becca: People are so committed to the small-town vibe here, everyone knowing each other. It’s so cool to see my colleagues interact with all these customers and they know their names and who they are. I also admire the way we work with other small businesses in the community. Everyone is invested in each other.

Lori Robinson: It’s funny for me, because I went to middle school and high school here, and I worked on the south end for longer than I care to admit, but all of that built a lot of relationships for me, the kind where you see people every day. It’s strange to have people to come in who have kids who were four when I met them and are now graduating from college and starting their careers. When I think about being part of a bookstore, I hope that there are some kids and regular customers who have felt like we’ve offered them a safe place and that I’ve personally been a safe person to talk to who they know won’t judge them or what they like to read. It means a lot to people when we remember them. I hope we offer a warm moment and a good experience.

Caitlin: With the exception of Laurie (and Becca, who is moving off-island), none of the staff lives on the island. So I guess we feel we’re representatives of the store and the community and it’s our responsibility to make people feel welcome.

Nancy: I feel like I have really grown with Mercer Island. I don’t live here, but I feel like I’ve really gotten to know this community. I worked for Roger for six years and I’ve worked for Laurie for almost seven, and we see kids grow up, we see people age, we have a lot of customers who have died over the years, and you’re kind of going through life cycles with people. We’ve seen the build up of Mercer Island, the businesses who are all working together now—it didn’t used to be like that. The community feels more like they appreciate their community too. I think our customers really stepped up during Covid and realized, we love this place, and we need it. They’ve been great.

Lillian: As the kids’ specialist, it’s different, because I spend a lot of time chatting with the community kids. I get to watch them grow up. There are people that come in who are going to high school that eight years ago I was recommending chapter books to. So, to have a hand in helping kids become life-long readers, and enhancing how important it is, is great. I always say I’m lucky to not be the teacher or parent because I don’t have to worry about the academics. I worry about, how can I make this kid love books so much that they will be a reader for the rest of their life?

Miriam: Right? That makes so much sense. Thanks, everyone. What a cool crowd. I adore all of you and am so glad you're in my life, and everyone else's!

First ever ship: tbh I'm not really that into shipping (because I'm aroace), and mine are all vanilla canon, so like ... I honestly don't remember my first. Maybe it was KP and Ron? Idk

Every once in a while I'll take a break from a series to watch a movie, but it never stays in my 'Continue Watching', so I literally don't remember. Lately, I've been trying to catch up on Critical Role 3: Bells Hells, and those episodes are longer than the longest movies

Currently reading: oh God, so many things. I'm reading the last book of the Howl's Moving Castle trilogy: House of Many Ways by Diana Wynne Jones. Also, The Story of Kullervo by JRR Tolkien and published posthumously by his son. Also, part one (the Serpent Queen) of book two (King of the Murgos) of Volume One of The Malloreon sequel to The Belgariad by David Eddings. Also, Stardust by Neil Gaiman and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis (both AGAIN again). And also the first book of the Shadow and Bone series ... and this doesn't even include the MANY webcomics I'm trying to catch up on, or any of the non-fiction I've picked up, or anything on my TBR list that I haven't started yet. Anyway, tldr I like fantasy novels lol

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?

i started telling stories in 1993. my mother bought me a puppet set for christmas and i used the puppets to act out my favorite movies (the neverending story, but the book version rather than the movie. i was a bleak child) and then later i told my own stories with those same puppets (i still have them).

after that i learned to write them down. i used kid pix and storybook weaver (my beloved!!) to place pictures where i didn’t yet have the language capabilities. i wrote down every single part of the magical world in my head because the real world was so fucking lonely (my brother and i were latchkey kids raised in the sort of neighborhood where you couldn’t play outside or you might get shot. we didn’t go to friends’ houses because they were ALSO latchkey kids. we didn’t have anyone over. for the first ten years of my life it was me and my brother and the make believe worlds we invented).

i started posting fanfiction online in 1999 after my online rp friends told me about it. in high school i tried to invite friends to enjoy my writing too, and my best friend told me i was amazing. a week later she ‘accidentally’ forgot to hang up when leaving me a voicemail and i heard all of my friends discussing how i was terrible and awful and wouldn’t know a good story if someone wrote it for me and put my name on it. i stopped sharing with people who could look into my eyes after that.

(except my brother. he’s never counted.)

i kept sharing online though. i liked the safety that came from not having to tell when people were lying.

as for where i am now? i have an entire complete urban fantasy series i’m terrified to publish because it’s been around since high school and i can’t help but believe what those assholes said about me back then. in my head i’m going to be a real published author one day because these worlds are too vast to be only inhabited by me, but in actuality??? bro idk i’m neurotic and i have a god complex and also a lot of trauma.

i guess my therapist and i can talk about this on wednesday 🤪

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?

despite the color i use to represent him/associate him with being yellow, wednesday only wears muted earth tones. it has no bearing on the story, it’s never mentioned, there’s literally no point to it, but i’ve known this fact for 17 years now.

Also, fun little fact, my buddie fantasy au actually was originally an idea I had for a novel a few years ago that I wrote a little for and plotted some and then one day I was like I want to see buddie in this and it just took off

🧪 do you research for your fics? Oh yes! That's one of my favorite parts of the writing process. I've researched everything from medieval weaponry to the wine making process to ancient republics and so on. If there is even a little something I've included or want to write about that I have no knowledge of, I do a deep dive

Imagine a person..

The sort of person that walks into a D&D campaign, or any place centered for nerds on high fantasy, and the conversation they want to have is that, castles and monarchy are bad, and therefore, bad culture and bad influence on society.

So they demand putting in big disgusting notes at the start talking about, “CERTAIN UNDESIRABLE GROUPS sure have been whooping up monarchy and racism lately, huh! The feudal times were actually horrible and unequal and a terror, and we should stop idolizing them beyond nostalgia for [beloved book series that’s on thin ice but politically inexpedient to trash on without losing the audience]”

Then they start to suggest, ohhh, I dunno, fantasy settings with more.. I dunno.. just spitballin’.. anarcho-syndicalist or socialist themes maybe? Or mythological tribespeople with weird cultures on equality, something about ‘critical lenses’ maybe, and advice on why you should want to involve many cultures in your games and stories, but not allow anyone to play as them unless they’re the appropriate racial background in real life.

Yeah it’s irritating. But it’s also fucking ridiculous and presumptuous. You know whom you sound like when you do this?

How so? Okay,

what other presumptive ass would walk in on a bunch of nerds and tell them they’re FANTASY GOVERNMENT IN THEIR YE OLDE TIMEY MEDIEVAL EUROPEAN FANTASY GAME AND FRANCHISE WRONG? And then have the audacity to demand maybe OHHHH I DUNNO... CONSTITUTIONALIST FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVING REPUBLIC, WITH REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY?

Having the gall to tell them they, “shouldn’t idolize dead kings and should get a REAL government system in their imaginationland.” Because, “kings and royalty are for wusses and communists.”

You might be going, “THAT’S TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM WHEN I DO IT!” and. no it isn’t.

D&D and fantasy fiction use mythological past to stimulate the mind and actually learn about history, just to mythologize it. Of course feudalism was actually terrible. Romance of some things, particularly pirates for example, is terrible. But the people marching up this hill to make a fuss and try to pull a silk screen over peoples hearts and minds to manipulate them know publishing academic hitpieces, calling women out on their romanticizing pirates in novels and fiction, would make them terribly unpopular and rend their target audience dumb to their voice.

When fantasy utilizes the romantic image of the monarchy, they are NOT sponsoring monarchism, oh my fucking god. This disgusting fiction exists for nothing else than to justify treating aspects of media and culture the way tribes and nations treat features of geography for area denial from the enemy, to keep them thirsty, to starve them, to give them nowhere to live. I’m so tired of it not being understood that these people are behaving and thinking like this specifically for this tactic and outcome. Gatekeeping and ownership of the entire fandom of production and consumption of stories and fiction and art.

That’s authoritarian and tyrannical, and trying to use postmodernist nonsense the way religious moralists bandy about their religious text as if it were a book of facts for their undesired opinions.

Also popular is talking about how, “you know how European culture is specifically racist and all their fantasy creatures are just expressions of xenophobia, right? Orcs are ‘swarthy’ dangerous barbarian foreigners. black people! Those racist Europeans!”

Boiling down and tainting all European history to just, “white people are conceited monsters who unlike everybody else, hated everybody that was not their chosen people.” The least historical and most unflattering interpretation of culture and mythology you can have, done purely to invalidate and delegitimize a thing.

They invite other groups of people to accept this interpretation for two reasons. Firstly, it gives them cultural power to interpret things as true or false. That is a kind of power. Second, it gives different political entiites a popular (if incorrect) imagery to treat as true when dealing with European or people that are descended from them. And in theory since these people claim to be SoooOooOooOO protective of “persons of color,” this relationship can never go bad, can it?

Wrong. That’s not how people that think like this work. In conventional Marxism, the Marxists start spreading propaganda and working backwards with people to demand upon them even imaginary common ground they can agree on. Such as, “Ryan is an asshole because-”. Then they keep doing that, until the group reach consensus Ryan is an asshole, at least they can agree on THAT, and decides to kill Ryan. They make him dig his own hole, then put a bullet in his head and bury him.

And then the Marxist does the same thing to the next runner up, Michael, progressively assassinating the character of the competition without directly competing with them, getting the other participants to do his dirty work for him.

It start with, “all white people are racist.” When white people are no longer the scapegoats, then the same people that clawed their way up claiming to, “only care about racial and sexual justice!” and that white men embody the worst elements of both, suddenly switch to the next nearest, “oppressive majority.”

And they train youth to do this inter-community. So on the macro scale they’ll at least pay lip service to caring about Native American culture and religion and identity. On the micro scale, if they were being honest, they’d call many Native American tribes racist, most Native American cultures sexist, and tell them they don’t care what their history or traditions or culture say- they’re doing them wrong unless they do whatever the postmodernist socialist thinks is correct.

They didn’t USED to be so bold and broad with their terms for racism. They at least used to maintain a doublethink by the positive liberals that would say, “all racism is wrong,” while carefully using non-discussion and not allowing arguments or probing these thought destroying statements to prevent them asking if they’re saying non-whites are incapable of “being racist.”

The truth was they always believed racism was tied to class struggle theory and that meant white people were oppressors, thus racism was “the phenomenon of oppression living under a white majority with capitalism.” But the more general, palatable interpretation was, “racial discrimination bad. :)” With a million unseen and inaccessible asterisks that you WEREN’T SUPPOSED to even see to further ask them to clarify about.

But then they realized with the internet, people could trace the social lines back to sociology classes and professors and see the organization and institutions preaching this shit, even find the textbooks they’re printed in. So, they started being more upfront about it.

Before, they would’ve just avoided talking about it and let the other person give them the benefit of the doubt. SURELY, they didn’t mean, “all white people are racist/black and Asian people are incapable of racism,” right? When, yes, they did. Hiding in the ambiguities and things you’d never imagine they’d be implying in practice.

However, that’s just one step. Vilifying white people until white people are denied access or legitimacy to society because of their ethnic background isn’t the final step. Once whites are denied franchise just on the basis that being white is oppressive to others, then they’ll start trash talking the next minority as being the in-power majority; probably Asians, seeing as black people are the biggest sacred cows when it comes to racial discrimination, not just in the US, but globally. Then the generational story will be, “our beliefs weren’t complete. Also [other group] are bastards and their culture and heritage are imaginary trash, too.”

And so on. Presenting this as, “white people bad, we should gang up on them and do justice” is merely a means to an end for them. Sugar on medicine that sits in wait. Even if the next step is introduced 20 years from now.

So in short, these people are not the people you want to give the power to interpret fiction and fantasy, or gatekeep what is appropriate or not. They are not forthcoming, most of the time, and confuse THEIR good with true good on purpose. And believe so long as the book they’re drawing their absolutes from isn’t a religious text, but a sociology one, that it’s somehow more valid or empirical.

And they have no more weight to their bullshit than Stan Smith does, demanding our fantasy stories and romantic genres revolve around his idea of a “correct, moral and upstanding government and social values.” for the exact same reasons Stan would want to impose those on his son’s games.
