Speaking of ruin’s tendency to land himself in situations where he’s kidnapped, or forced into isolation for periods of time

I wonder if that’s the go-to Ruin whump because it’s going to be the most effective weapon against him?

He’s already got ten years worth of trauma having to do with physical dismemberment and the mental pain of losing family and friends to a monster, so those are a no go.

However, he is very well established as an actor, one that constantly switches up his masks to suit his needs. Usually, those needs involve people-skills— having an audience to perform for. So, how do you get to an actor who’s already been through so much that usual methods won’t work? You take away their audience.

I picture Ruin as someone who uses their masks to cope, to avoid facing their pain, to pretend like they’re not hurting. Masks are carefully crafted to appease certain audiences— I’m sure you’ve heard of “people pleasing is a form of manipulation”— and Ruin puts himself around those people when he needs to, both to manipulate his audience and avoid being alone with his thoughts.

That’s not to say he’s incapable of being alone! He’s had a lot of alone time before and after his big plan. But, he had the choice to seek out companionship, an audience, when he wanted or needed to. That, and he kept himself busy almost the entire time, with one thing or another. Method-acting a madman, somehow building a whole spaceship thing, fixing arcade machines, trying to navigate his way into other people’s business, to name a few.

When he’s taken away from his audience, or he loses general access to his audience, he has no one to wear a mask for. He’s painfully aware he has a mask, it only feels natural when he’s performing but alone there’s no one to perform for. He’s left alone with his thoughts, forced to be with himself (you’ll notice he talks to himself often) and I’d like to assume that he hates that.

TLDR I think that Ruin’s been kidnapped/isolated several times because that’s the only thing that would hurt him in any capacity beyond actually killing him

the loss of autonomy in shipwrecked 64 is probably one of the most fascinating aspects of the game as a built video-game in fiction, to me

bc there was never autonomy to begin with, not really. games give you the illusion of choice, that's a well worn talking point in games analysis

but for bucky, the video game protagonist, he wouldve been content with that in the 2023 rebuild of the game bc he either leaves the island with his friends or like whoops, they died! hes not here to feel bad abt that anymore tho, theres always next time. he tried his best, he made the choices that got him there, with his friends!

but in the original copy of the game once you start going down into those layers my boy bucky's seeing shit he was never equipped to handle and its probably totally broken his perception of reality.

my impression, at least, is that bucky the video game bucky has become some kind of aware sapient being, kinda like stumbler. but bc he's still the Video Game Protagonist he has to be pulled away from anything comforting or normal by force. he doesnt even get to see stumbler's helpful guides or videos bc he's not the one looking at that, you are.

from his perspective hes getting tossed and pulled around just Hoping that his "friend" (you) is getting. Something. from this. theres no getting away from this.

even if you save his animal friends for a normal ending the inevitability of exploring deeper in the OG game copy is like an unstopple force and bucky's very very much a moveable object.

Ok but, regarding TMAGP 27, I can't stop thinking about Jonah writing, after sending Archibald to a certain death, "It is done, and I am surprised to find how little remorse I feel." It reminds me of his statement in MAG 160:

"The discovery, not simply of the dark and horrible reality of the world in which you live, but that you would quite willingly doom that world and confine the billions in it to an eternity of terror and suffering, all to ensure your own happiness, to place yourself beyond pain and death and fear. (...) It is an awful thing to know about yourself."

I will never get tired of little details about his life being revealed (regardless of the timeline/dimension) because the parallel between his discovery of the supernatural world and the discovery of his own true self and the things he's capable of is so interesting and compelling to me.

Along with the knowledge of the horrors that exist in his world comes the horror of the realization that he might be capable of anything to stop feeling scared and vulnerable, to put himself over everybody else if necessary. Every time curiosity leads him into a new experiment, a new sacrifice in the name of knowledge, he lets go a little bit of himself and his morality. And then, as it happened with Archibald, and as it happened with Barnabas in another world, he feels surprised of how easy it was. Of how he doesn't feel regret or grief, how at most he finds himself thinking that it was all a pity. So it becomes even easier each time, he finds freedom in it, as he also mentions in MAG 160— and one sacrifice after another, it all becomes incredibly simple. There is no fear of losing himself, only the fear of death and pain remains, and only after that process of two hundreds years can one condemn the world for his own sake.

The progressive descent into evil of Jonah Magnus, slowly exposed through statements and letters, will never stop being one of the more interesting parts of this podcast imo.

"Light Serpent" Aphelion and the Reflect-Reflect Fruit

Aphelion's Devil Fruit lets him make hard light constructs, giving him offensive and defensive capabilities in battle and creative uses for things outside of fights. One of his most notable moves is his Reflect-Dragon ability, which lets him create draconic features for himself to wear out of the hard light. This ability has several "stages" to it that he's unlocked over time, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

-Wyvern is his most commonly used form of the ability. It gives him great agility with the wings, and the tail can be used to attack with if he plans it right. Without being weighed down, it is the most agile form. Wings can be used to fly or be used as shields since they are made of hard light and will not cause him physical harm if damaged.

-Dragon is the next commonly used. More offensive, it is the same as Wyvern with one added offensive trait with hard light claws on his arms and legs.

-Basilisk is the most offensive of the forms. Only used in rare moments against incredibly strong enemies or large groups. Basilisk has the perks of Dragon, but with larger horns for protection or offensive, and a second set of hard light arms.

-Awakened, or also known as Greater Dragon, is a version of Dragon achieved only after Aphelion awakens his Devil Fruit. The Awakened Reflect-Reflect Fruit allows Aphelion to make constructs out of ACTUAL light. The constructs take on the properties of the light source used (in this case, sunlight, as it is the most common and easiest to Absorb greater amounts of for stronger abilities).

Important note: Aphelion does not have to use every construct in the forms at once. For example, he can take just the claws of Dragon, or just the second set of arms from Basilisk. Many times, he will use just the wings to fly. These forms are just examples of how his power progresses. The only form he cannot take just one construct from to use is Awakened Greater Dragon.
