Little Brother
“Cor, how long does it take a body to hook up with a bird?!” With a huff, Tobias Greystone hooked his arms behind his head. He was supposed to be at lessons, but he’d decided to take a free-day today. It was good for the mind, they said. Too much book learning could addle the wits, and Tobias wasn’t keen on that. Not that he needed book-learning anyway. Knights didn’t need books!
Been half the morning and he’s still in there? He’d had to trade three whole Pastry Fish--not to mention, it was Cook’s super special recipe--to Brandon who worked in the wrym-stables of the Knights-Dragoon. Brandon was always good to find out who was going on shift and off. Or in Tobias’ case, who was coming into the city...
“Doesn’t too much whorin’ mess up a body as well? Shite.” From what he’d heard of his older brother, Reinhardt had legions of women throwing themselves at him. One for every night that he stayed in the city, if the rumors were true. With a sigh, Tobias reached into his purse and drew out a muffin. If he was going to be stuck here waiting for a chance to at least see his big brother, he might as well fill his belly. Not to mention figure out a plan for actually getting up close.
They said he was the journeyman so he ain’t got no need for a squire. Don’t think he’s got a dragon either, so can’t be a dragon-boy. That Riven bird only has a lady’s maid whenever she’s in town, so don’t think I could be a page like Honoroit and whats-her-name. Tobias took a large bite out of the muffin, considering his options.
Mabbe I could--
“There you are!” Suddenly Tobias found himself being plucked up from off the ground.
“Hey! Oy! What the fuckin hells?!”
“Your little happy arse is supposed to be at lessons!” Helgrim, the House Fortemps Knight-Dragoon captain, huffed as he turned the lad around to face him. Not that he could blame Tobias. The lad was curious, which was a good thing. Full of energy and heart, and thankfully now had a chance at not only becoming a man, but enjoying a good score of seasons. It was unfortunate though, that he’d been kept from his big brother.
Even worse that he was used as a club to hurt him.
“I don’t need book-learning if I’m to be a knight!” Tobias protested. Then he went quiet. “Besides. I got business out here.”
“The hell kinda business you have?!” Helgrim demanded. “You’re only--” He paused as movement at the Forgotten Knight’s entrance caught his eye. A head of auburn hair and a body in white cloth strode into view. Tobias’s head jerked around, and Helgrim sighed.
“Waiting for him, huh?” He said, nodding at Reinhardt’s form. Tobias didn’t say anything, licking his lips.
“Just...wanted to see him.” He mumbled, looking down at the ground. Then he started as Helgrim set him back down on the ground gently.
“Leave it to your pa and your liege lord.” The highlander advised. “It’ll be sorted out.”
“No it won’t.” Tobias muttered. He kicked a stray pebble that was next to his shoe. “He don’t want anything to do with Pa, and it’s my fault. Pa told him he loves me more than him and that he’s dead to him.”
“That’s not your...” Helgrim trailed off. He exhaled. How the hell could he tell the boy that it wasn’t his fault? All blame laid squarely on Alliare’s shoulders. With a sigh, Helgrim rested a gentle hand on Tobias’ head, and the two watched as Reinhardt headed into the Congregation’s main building.

is this nonbinary person actually "male presenting", or did you just decide that based on your arbitrary idea of maleness?
is this nonbinary person actually "female presenting", or did you just decide that based on your arbitrary idea of femaleness?
perhaps they're just "presenting" as themselves and your binary biases are clouding your judgement?

I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.
I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:
Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)
Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)
Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often
Eat dessert first
Celebrate well, and often
Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)
Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.
Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate
Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)
Walk without having a specific destination or goal
Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.
I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.
