ONE DAY ↳book > screen
I love him, she thought, I’m just not in love with him and also I don’t love him. I’ve tried, I’ve strained to love him but I can’t. I am building a life with a man I don’t love, and I don’t know what to do about it.

Spencer’s oldest child (either with reader or previous relationship) wanting to help out with readers baby!
“So…”
“So,” Spencer echoes, hooking Amy under the arms before she can wriggle away. He props her on the counter, cloth already in hand.
“About the baby.”
“What about the baby?” he asks, encouraging her head back gently to wipe her mouth. She’s covered in butter and omelette, a chive stuck to her chin.
“You know how she’s little?”
“Yes.” Spencer wipes her face clean very gently. It’s not a good plan, Amy wriggles and squirms away from the warm water and it takes a long time, but Spencer can’t bring himself to be rough. “She’s really little. I know all about it.”
“And mom is tired.”
Spencer grins. “Yes, mom is tired.”
“Can I look after the baby? ‘Cos I’m big?”
Spencer isn’t in the habit of lying to her, perhaps to the detriment of his own easy life. “Probably not. You are getting bigger, but she’s so little she’s actually quite fragile. We have to be careful to hold her the right way, and to carry her gently, because she’s not done forming. You don’t have the dexterity to do this all the time. Plus, she’s heavy.” Spencer puts the cloth aside. He leans down enough to be face to face with Amy, puckered up for a kiss.
Amy frowns. Spencer kisses her damp cheek.
“I do too have dex-trity.”
“What do you want to do?”
“I want to look after the baby.”
“Then who will look after me?” Spencer asks cheekily.
“Mom.”
“Okay. Listen,” he takes her face carefully into his hand, wiping at the place where he’d kissed affectionately, “there are ways you can help with the baby. Lots of ways! Stuff we already do, like making dinner, and stuff we’ve been doing to help mom, like washing her clothes and watering her plants.”
“I love mom so I water the plants, that’s not the baby.”
“I know,” he says, rubbing her cheek. “That’s why I do it too. But I promise it helps mommy more than you realise when we do this stuff for her.”
“Let’s do something else.”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know.”
Spencer opens his arms for her and she latches on like his baby sloth. He used to say it to her all the time, how she was his lazy sloth pup, always on his chest. “How about we ask?”
He carries her out of the kitchen and upstairs to find you, only you’re not where they left you in the master bedroom. Instead, you're sitting on the floor of Amy’s bedroom with the baby swaddled to your chest. “Oh, hey, it’s big Reid and little Reid.”
“What Reid does that make you?” Spencer asks.
“I’m ambiguously sized Reid.” You look down at the baby. “And this is tiny Reid.”
“What are you doing?” Amy asks.
“I’m cleaning up your humongous mess, angel.”
“What!” Amy shouts. Spencer laughs at her outburst. “Mom, I’m supposed to help you!”
“Says who?”
“Says me! Daddy, put me down.”
Spencer obliges her and sets her down. Amy runs to you and takes the doll from your hand, to your surprise, sweeping the pile of her dolls away, mixing the ones you’d redressed with naked and ragged ones. You cover the baby’s back, sighing. Spencer knows from experience those dolls are finicky.
“I was just trying to help,” you say, pouting at her. “It was a big mess, you can’t do it all by yourself, you’re just my little girl.”
Spencer appreciates the way you say it. It’s good to love someone, but it feels like great luck to have fallen in love with a mom who couldn’t adore her children more than you do. He wanted kids so badly, and your love for them cements a great decision. Amy doesn’t feel so lucky, throwing herself against the side of her bed with a dramatic, forlorn whine.
You tip your head back as Spencer kneels by your side. “What’s wrong?” you ask.
He pulls the swaddle from the baby’s face to see her. She’s awake but quiet. Recognition lights her features when she notices his poking, giving him a gurgling smile. “Nothing’s wrong,” he says to you. “Amy just wants to help today, ‘cos she’s our lovely girl.” His voice turns to sweetness as the baby’s smile widens. “Hello, angel. Hi, hi, hi.”
“You wanna help me?” you ask.
Amy pulls her face up from her messy bed sheets. “Yes, please.”
“Well, nobody’s given me a hug in a while.”
“I want to help with the baby!”
“Nobody’s given her a cuddle today, either.”
“She’s cuddling you right now!”
“She’s just resting. What she needs is a good hug and a good kiss.” You stretch your legs out in front of you and reach back to pull at the swaddle. Spencer helps before you can stretch your shoulder in the wrong way, taking the fabric down your arms and releasing you from its confines. You cup the baby’s weight in one hand, her head the other, and slide her into your arm. “Come on, best big sister. Come and hold her for me.”
Amy rushes to do as you’ve said. Spencer smiles to himself and pulls the mound of dolls toward him —there’s a lot of work to do in here, you weren’t kidding about the mess.
You put the baby in Amy’s lap.
“Now,” you say, leaning into Spencer’s, arms opening expectantly, “for me?”
Spencer can’t wait to abandon the doll and bend down over you. He almost pokes your kidney out with a Barbie, but he’s never been any good at resisting you when you ask for a cuddle. It’s not your most comfortable embrace, and yet it’s as perfect as any other, his laugh lost in your shoulder, wrapping his arms behind your back.
“Keep an eye on the babies,” you whisper.
Spencer checks that Amy’s holding the baby the right way and makes you into a Reid sandwich. “She told me she is too dexterous.”
“Did you imply she wasn’t?”
“I said,” he relents, smiling to himself as you squeeze his waist, “that she’s not dexterous enough to carry the baby all day long.”
“But how do you know?”
“I read a couple parenting books a few years ago, I tend to have a pretty good memory.”
“Do you remember how to rub my back?” you tease, softly, still a little shy after all these years.
Spencer rubs your back. Amy babbles loving nonsense at the baby for a few minutes, and then complains of being bored and wanting another omelette.

You noticed the change in him the moment they met.
Usually, you weren’t involved in Tyler’s chases but for some reason that day, you decided to meet the crew at a diner for lunch between storms. You had to fight your way through the crowd of adoring fans hovering around his truck before being able to greet him with a big kiss and warm embrace. As always, he kissed you back before slinging his arm over your shoulder. But as the two of you began walking towards the diner door, chatting about what he had gotten up to that morning, he trailed off, his attention now fully on the crew huddled around the Strom Par trucks.
You didn’t know any of those guys by name but had been around enough to recognize their faces—all but one. There was a new girl with them who was studying a tablet and glancing up at the darkening sky. She was pretty, but you didn’t see anything particularly notable about her. You turned to ask Tyler who she was, but before you could, he strolled off in that direction without a word leaving you standing with your hand on the door to the diner unsure what you were supposed to do.
Part of you thought you should go inside and order both of you lunch so it would be waiting when he came back, but there was something in Tyler’s posture as he stood next to this girl that was setting off alarm bells in your head. They were across the parking lot with their backs mostly to you so you couldn’t make out anything they were saying, but after knowing Tyler for six years and dating him for four, you had gotten rather good at reading his body language. And right now, the pronounced jut of his hips, the upturned tilt of his head, and that certain smile you could just get a glimpse of when he turned the right way all told you the same thing. He liked this girl—a lot.
You watched them for another moment or two until Lily, Dani, and Boone came barrelling out of the diner, almost knocking you over. By the time you all untangled yourselves and you looked back over to where Tyler and the girl had been standing, she was walking back towards the Storm Par team. But Tyler…Tyler’s eyes were locked on her. He nodded slightly as an impressed grin spread across half of his face. He stared after her for another beat before the grin dropped and he straightened, his eyes scanning the lot until he saw you standing by the diner, looking back at him. Quickly slipping his sunglasses back on his face, he jogged to your side.
Just before he reached you, he shot one quick look over his shoulder at the Storm Par team. Whatever the girl had said to them had caused them to pack up all their equipment and climb into their vehicles. Tyler jerked his head at Lily, Dani, and Boone who were still standing near you, then he placed his hands on your shoulders.
“I’m sorry we didn’t get to do lunch, but we gotta go. Storm’s moving in faster than we thought and it looks like it's gonna be a good one.” He rubbed his hands up and down your arms. “Just meet you back at the motel tonight? Dex was gonna grill up some steaks for everyone.”
“Yeah,” you said, not looking at his face. “Sounds like a plan.”
“Hey.” He used his finger to tilt your chin up to look at him. “Everything alright?”
You sighed, staring into his sunglasses. “Yes, Tyler. Just go before you miss your window. I’ll see you tonight.”
“Okay…tonight.” He squeezed your arms one last time and pressed a quick kiss to the top of your head before heading to where his crew was already packing up.
When he was about halfway across the parking lot, the group of Storm Par vehicles pulled out in front of him. As the truck the girl was in passed by, you saw that same smile return to his face and you turned away, a queasy feeling building in your stomach.
Tumblr media
That night at the motel, all Tyler could talk about was this girl—Kate—and how she had perfectly predicted the storm. Everyone else out there had assumed the system forming to the east was the one to chase, yet Tyler and Kate had been the only ones to correctly identify that the cap wouldn’t break and the one to the west was the better option.
The sick feeling deep in your stomach that had been growing since Tyler began talking about her only got worse when Kate walked by the Wranglers on the way to her room. Tyler introduced the two of you—she was polite but seemed surprised when Tyler referred to you as his girlfriend. You just nodded back before taking a long drag on your beer. Seeing the way Tyler had looked at her was bad enough, but hearing him tease her and listening to him call her by a little nickname all while that spark burned in his eyes was a thousand times worse. And on top of it all, you could see past his bravado—he genuinely respected this girl and thought she was special. It was too much to take and, shortly after she left, you excused yourself and went to your room. When Tyler came up an hour or two later, you pretended to be asleep so you wouldn’t have to talk.
Originally, you had planned on heading back to your shared apartment in the morning, but as uncomfortable as you were feeling about the situation, you didn’t feel like leaving Tyler alone with Kate. You felt terrible even thinking like that because you knew Tyler loved you and would never do anything to hurt you, but you couldn’t forget the way he looked at her. So, you rode out with Dani and Dexter on that day’s chase and jumped in to help when the crew arrived in what was left of Crystal Springs after the storm went through.
While the rest of the crew began handing out food and water to those who had just lost everything, a woman came over to where you, Tyler, and Boone were sorting through some rubble. She was dirty and crying, tears leaving muddy streaks down her face as she explained that they couldn’t find their family dog and, as her kids had already lost so much, was there any way you could help her find him. You were all more than willing to help and immediately began looking for the little guy.
After a while, you began drifting away from where Tyler and Boone were looking. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw the Storm Par trucks pull up but you tried to ignore them. Scott and Javi were probably just here to try to talk these poor people into selling what little they had left to that slimeball Riggs for a fraction of what it was worth. How could Tyler seriously be drawn to this new girl if she was helping Storm Par do this to people? It went against everything Tyler stood for. This thought stuck in your head and you began to wonder if maybe you had let your insecurities get the best of you and had blown this whole Kate situation out of proportion.
Suddenly, you heard a small whimper off to your left. Slowly and carefully, you shifted a few pieces of concrete and wood until you saw a tiny pair of eyes staring back at you from the shadows. Bending down, you called out to him, and the cutest little tan-and-white terrier poked his head out with a small bark. After sniffing in your direction for a moment, he slunk forward until he was right in front of you and you slowly reached out. When he didn’t retreat, you placed your hand gently on his head and stroked his fur. He was trembling and wet but otherwise seemed unharmed.
“Hey there, buddy! I'm so glad we found you all safe and sound.” You gathered the small dog into your arms. Rubbing under his chin and giving him a reassuring coo, you turned around and called out, “Ty! Look who I fou—”
The smile faded from your face as you spotted Kate speaking with Tyler and Boone. Even being this far away, even with Tyler getting heated about whatever they were talking about, even as Tyler turned to storm away, you could see that you hadn’t been jumping to conclusions after all. You could practically see the tension crackling in the air between them and it was the final straw. As much as every fiber of your being was screaming at you not to, you knew what you needed to do.
Walking over to where the guys were still searching, you placed the dog into Boone’s arms before grabbing Tyler’s hand and leading him away from everyone else. “We need to talk.”
“Uh oh. Am I in trouble?” he asked, chuckling slightly. But the moment you pulled him behind the rubble of one of the houses and faced him, his smile evaporated. Squeezing your hand tighter, he asked, “Wait. Is something actually wrong?”
Letting go of his hand, you took a few steps away from him as you slowly exhaled. Then you asked, “Tell me one thing about what I do at my job. Not my title, but what I do.”
Tyler stared at you as if you had just grown another head. “Sweetheart, what is this—”
“Just answer the question.”
He ran his hand through his hair as he pondered the question. “You’re in finance and you work…with money…”
“Doing what with money?”
“....I don’t know.”
“I know you don’t and we’ve always joked about it and I thought it was okay. After all, I don’t really get what you do either—I never have. I mean, I know what you literally do, but how you feel about it or why you get such joy from it?” You shake your head, staring at the ground. “I’ve tried to be as supportive as I could be the last four years and let you go out there without saying a word, despite how dangerous it is, but I still don’t get it…She does.”
“She who?”
“Kate.”
“Wait a minute–” Tyler held up his hands and took a step closer to you but you cut him off.
“Tyler, you’ve been different ever since she showed up. She’s all you talk about and you’ve been going out of your way to impress her or show her how much better you are than Storm Par.”
“You know I get a little competitive especially when it comes to those assholes. They look down on my crew because they don’t have degrees or schooling or whatever and I sometimes get lost in trying to show them we are just as good as they are without all that stuff. So maybe I was going a little overboard trying to show Kate that before Storm Par turned her against us. But you know it’s all just big talk.”
“I know and I’ve tried to tell myself that. But it’s not just what you say to her, it’s how you are whenever she’s around. You stand differently, smile differently. You…you…” You blinked several times as you tried to hold back the tears that were forming in your eyes.
“I what?”
Taking another deep breath, you said, “Ty…the way you look at her is how you used to look at me.”
That shut him up. Whatever argument he was forming in his head was no longer valid and he knew it.
Placing your hand over his heart, you said as your voice trembled slightly, “Admit it. We’ve been off for a while now. It sort of feels like we’ve just been going through the motions. We used to talk about the future: a house, marriage, a dog, maybe kids. But I can’t even remember the last time either of us mentioned anything like that.” Your eyes dropped to the ground, unable to look into his eyes as you said this next part. “Maybe…maybe we just need to take some time apart. Maybe there’s something better out there for both of us and we’re just holding each other back.”
Tyler placed his hand over where yours still rested on his chest. “There’s no one better than you.”
“Are you sure you still feel that way?” Tyler started to respond but you added, “Even after meeting Kate?”
He hesitated and that was all you needed to hear.
Cupping his cheek with your free hand, you found the strength to look up at him as you said, “I love you. But I don’t understand you—not the way she does. And I honestly don’t think I ever will. So you need to explore this and see if there’s something there that I couldn’t give you.” You laughed, tears streaming down your cheeks. “And who knows? Maybe while you and Kate are getting your happily ever after, I’ll meet someone who understands what I do at work with money.”
Tyler squeezed his eyes shut, leaning into your touch as he whispered, “I don’t want you to go.”
“And I don’t want to go. But I have to. For both of us.” Pulling his face down towards yours, you lightly kissed his lips. Then, after pulling back, you rested your forehead against his. “Please…really give this a try. All I want for you is to be happy. Whether that’s with me, Kate, or someone else. And who knows? Maybe we’ll find our way back to each other one day. But until then, if you feel it…”
Your hands slipped from where they rested on him as you pivoted quickly and rushed away. You wanted him to come after you. To come running up behind you, sweep you into his arms, and say he was chasing what he felt and that this had all been a mistake. But he didn’t.
Finding a police officer climbing into his car, you asked for a lift back to the motel where you had left your car. As you were climbing in, you glanced back at where you had left Tyler. But he wasn’t staring back. Instead, his attention was fully on one of the Storm Par trucks that was pulling out and you just managed to catch a glimpse of the driver’s blonde ponytail.
What was left of your heart shattered.
Tumblr media
The next few days were some of the worst of your life. You tried to carry on with your normal schedule and stay busy to keep your mind off of everything, but it was nearly impossible, especially considering you were still living in the apartment you shared with Tyler when it wasn’t storm season. His presence lingered in every inch of the space and you wondered how long you should wait before trying to find a new place to stay. He would still be gone for another month or so but living here knowing he was nothing more than a roommate at this point nearly brought you to tears every time you thought about it.
But even worse were the constant scenarios that played through your head about what he and Kate were doing at any given moment. You had told him to explore things with her and really see if there was a connection there, yet now thinking about him acting on anything made that queasy feeling in your stomach return worse than ever. One time you actually did get sick when you imagined Tyler showing up at the apartment asking you to leave so Kate could move it. You knew he would never be that cruel, but it didn’t stop your brain from asking what if.
Sometimes you wondered if you made a mistake. You had brought up your job and the fact Tyler didn’t know what you did as a reason he didn’t understand you, but that wasn’t the real issue (and to be fair, your job was pretty nuanced and even your parents could never remember exactly what you did). Deep down you had known for a while things were stalling out between the two of you. The love was still there but you had fallen into a rut, just going through the same routines without really putting much thought or effort into anything. Maybe Kate’s arrival was just the wake-up call you needed to face the truth. But maybe instead of pushing Tyler into another woman’s arms, you should have used this realization as fuel to work on getting the two of you back to where you were when you first started dating.
Maybe you just threw away the love of your life because you hadn’t tried putting the work into the relationship…
A few days after leaving Oklahoma, you were cleaning the kitchen after making dinner when you heard a frantic pounding on your door. Someone from work had mentioned possibly dropping off some paperwork later, but this sounded much too urgent a knock to be them.
Walking over to the door, you pressed against it and called, “Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
Your heart froze in your chest. It was still the middle of storm season. You hadn’t prepared yourself to face Tyler until then at least. Could he really be here to ask you to move out after all?
Cracking the door slightly to peer out, you gasped and let it swing open the rest of the way as you saw him leaning heavily on the door frame. His jeans and favorite dark burgundy shirt were filthy and ripped in several places. It looked like he had what was once mud—now dried, cracked, and flaking off—caked into his hair, skin, and clothes. But it was the way he was favoring his left leg, keeping as much weight off of it as possible, that really caught your attention.
“What the hell happened to you? Are you okay?” You grabbed his arm and slung it over your shoulder, helping him hobble into the apartment.
You tried to get him to sit on the couch, but he waved you off, opting to lean against the kitchen counter instead. Thinking he might want something to drink, you started to walk towards the fridge, however he grabbed your hand and pulled you into his arms. He reeked of sweat, oil, and smoke, and you tried to squirm out of his grasp but he stopped you, running his hand down the side of your face.
Trying to stay strong and not to melt into his embrace, you whispered, “What are you doing?”
But he just pulled you closer, his green eyes shining with something you recognized but hadn’t seen in a long time. “It’s you. It was always you and will always be you. And I should have known that from the beginning.”
Sighing, you pushed against his chest again. “Ty, I said we needed to take a step back and explore other relationships.”
“I did.”
Even though that was what you were telling him to do, it stung to hear but you pushed past it. “It’s been less than a week. That doesn’t count.”
“It could have been a year and it wouldn’t make a difference. Yeah, Kate and I share something because of our connections with the storms, and I had never met someone else who looks at them like I do so I was intrigued by her. But she’s not what I want and I’m sorry if I made you think she was. But I know now without a doubt what I want and that’s you.”
The certainty in his voice made you weak in the knees but you couldn’t understand what could have changed so completely in such a short amount of time. Studying his face, you asked, “What happened out there?”
“I just walked away from an EF5, even though I shouldn’t have. We were trying to help get people somewhere safe to hide before the storm hit when my leg got pinned under some debris—” you gasped “—I’m fine, I promise. Kate and Javi got me out and it’s just a little sore now. But then Kate took my truck and went out into the storm alone leaving Javi and me to help the rest of the crew keep everyone safe. The only place we could go was the movie theater and it wasn’t made to be a shelter. It started to come apart in minutes and people were getting sucked out. Then Lily lost her grip—”
“No! Tyler–”
“I was able to grab her but it was like playing tug of war with Mother Nature. I was holding onto her with both hands and the only thing keeping both of us from flying away was the toe of my boot wrapped around the leg of one of the theater seats. That moment was the first time in a really long time that I thought this might be it. That I wasn’t making it out of this storm alive. But just when it seemed like I couldn’t hold on any longer, I thought about you—and only you. I thought about the way you smile and boop my nose with whipped cream every single time we split a piece of pie. I thought about your absolutely horrible attempt at singing while you take a shower. I thought about that little sound you make when you’re sleeping curled against me. But most of all, I thought about the way we left things and I refused to let that be the last conversation we ever had. So, I held on until Kate was able to break up the storm.”
You had been falling in love with Tyler all over again at his confession, but that last sentence threw you for a loop. “Wait, she did what?”
He shook his head. “It’s a long story. I’ll explain later. But the point is, I came straight here as soon as I made sure everyone was okay because I had to fix things between us. And because I needed to do what I should have done a long time ago.”
Letting you go, Tyler reached into his pocket as—wincing—he lowered himself onto his injured leg. Your eyes grew wide as you realized what he was about to do. However, before he could pull his hand out of his pocket, you dropped down beside him, placing your hands on his to stop him.
“Ty, are you sure?” you asked, voice trembling. “I don’t want you to do this because you almost died or you think you have to—”
Tyler smiled, tears forming at the corners of his eyes. “No. Baby, I’ve realized that when you love something, you’ll spend your whole life trying to understand it. So while we might not understand everything about each other right now, I’d like to spend the rest of my life by your side trying to figure it out. Because I love you more than anything else in the world and would be honored if you’d let me spend every day proving that to you—” he moved your hands aside and pulled out a box from his pocket “—as my wife.”
He popped open the lid and you gasped. The diamond ring inside was as gorgeous as it was huge. You had seen smaller rings on A-list celebrities and knew there was no way in hell either you or Tyler could afford something like this, even if you combined your savings.
Mouth still gaping, you choked out, “Where the hell did you get that?”
Tyler smiled. “There was a jewelry shop down the street from the theater that was still standing. When I went by, the owner was out front inspecting the damage. Turns out, I had helped his wife and kids get to safety so he opened up the store and gave me a pretty good deal on it.”
“Still, you didn’t need to do this.” You reached up and brushed his hair off his face where it had been plastered down by sweat and dirt. “You know all I’ve ever wanted was you. You could have given me a rubber band and I still would have been the happiest girl in the world.”
“Should I take it back then?” He started to close the ring box, but you stopped him.
“Well, don’t be so hasty! I mean, since you already have it…”
“Does this mean you’re saying yes?” There was just the slightest edge of fear in his voice as if he honestly thought you might have a different answer.
But you nodded, holding out your hand. “Yes. As long as you are absolutely sure this is what you want, then of course I’m saying yes.”
Tyler’s smile doubled in size as he took the ring out of the box and slid it on your finger. Even noting how big it was, the weight of it momentarily surprised you. The diamonds sparkled and shined in the lights of the kitchen and you wondered if you would ever get tired of staring at it.
Once it was securely in place, Tyler wrapped his hand around the back of your neck and pulled you into his lips. The kiss had a fire and desire to it you hadn’t felt in what seemed like years, and you silently vowed to never let your passion for each other smolder again.
As the heat of the kiss began to burn even brighter, you felt Tyler’s fingers fiddling with the buttons of your blouse. With a soft moan, you turned your head, breaking the kiss but leaving your face pressed against his. “Ty, please don’t be offended by this, but do you think before we go any further, we could move this celebration to the shower? You smell really bad.”
He chuckled, his hands still skimming over the front of your blouse. “I’ll go wherever you want me to, as long as we are together.”
You smiled back and placed a quick kiss on his lips. “Forever.”
Then you helped ease him off the floor before leading him into the bathroom, both of your shirts and pants already on the floor before you reached it.

WHAT CABIN DO YOU THINK THE KOTLC CHARACTERS WOULD BE IN??
OKAY OKAY OKAY IVE BEEN READY FOR THIS ONE
Sophie- photographic memory is giving me Athena child, but she very well could be something else. It’s hard to tell when we’re talking about ability-based bc she has so many. Out of all the characters she’s the one I struggle the most with to assign a cabin
Dex- Hephaestus for obvious reasons, but also because Leo in hoo talks about being left out a lot and the fact that Dex gets less page time than Silveny says lots about that
Biana and Fitz- I think Fitz and Biana would both be Aphrodite kids bc a) they’re siblings so it makes sense for them to be the same cabin and b) it’s constantly mentioned how beautiful they are. I honestly think all of the Vackers would be. If any of them had charmspeak it would definitely be Alvar and maybe Fitz, which would give chance for such good Fitz rage. And like I said in my other post, Biana is a prime example of what the Aphrodite cabin would be like if written correctly and not just handed the “femininity makes me weak” role. She slays literally and figuratively.
Keefe- APOLLO APOLLO APOLLO (not just bc he’s blond just think about it really think about it) I want to explain but I can’t form the words so just think about it plsss
Marella- abilities would make her Hephaestus for sure, some of her personality traits would make her Aphrodite, but i don’t think she’d be a demigod I’d think she’d join the hunters of Artemis. OR OR OR she’s a child of Hephaestus and joins then joins the hunters (I forgot that was an option for a second)
Tam- so I looked into it and child of Hecate seems pretty good? I mean darkness and his ability with shadows is kind of eerie-like, and perfectly fit with Hecate. Also, the ability to control the mist sounds like a Tam thing
Linh- well, we’re all thinking it right? Poseidon. But less of the raging storm more of the gentle ocean waves kissing your feet and occasionally the raging storms. Like a touch of sadness and sorrow but easy to see the beauty in it so it’s not scary. Idk if that made sense Im spewing words here.
Wylie- I was thinking maybe Athena because he sees reason, you know? And I read Kotlc a very long time ago so I don’t remember much about him. He had that studious vibe to him idk. I’m going purely based off of feels rn😭
Stina- Nemesis. Okay okay, here me out. Girly holds her grudges, she’s a little mean, but she doesn’t let that stop her from helping Silveny whatever the motive may be. And if we’re thinking story wise, it’s like Ethan Nakamura if you squint but it’s there I can’t explain it. Seems bad, can be bad, but she’s proof that it’s never 100% bad, people have layers, like an onion
Maruca- Ares, and the reason is because she’s pretty bluntly honest, and she’s hella determined. Ares kids are mostly seen to be very frank, and that fits her perfectly. And her determination is a trait we can see in Clarisse(most of the time in the form of stubbornness, ahem, refusing to fight) but ofc in their world everything is sunshine and rainbows so determination, not stuborness. In all seriousness I mean determination because it fits her more than stubbornness but they’re similar traits. Idk I’m getting off topic
Those were all the characters I could think of at the top of my head and if you disagree with any let me know I just did these for fun nothing serious
I would love it if anyone wants to send me characters that I didn’t do and ill give them a cabin😊

I have many critiques on Keeper of the Lost Cities. Don’t get me wrong, I love it as a series. But like any series, there are both obvious and unobvious flaws. Since I finally have a place online to talk about them I thought I’d share my thoughts! (Disclaimer: this is not bashing on Shannon Messenger or the series in any way!)
1. Too many protagonists
The series was fairly okay with the original gang in the earlier books. That group being Sophie, Keefe, Fitz, Biana, and Dex. There was a chance to connect with all of the characters and grow on each of them. I know I know, characters like Biana and Dex were still pushed aside a bit but they had a better chance at being involved again. But then only more and more protagonists joined. Adding Tam and Linh was iffy, but fine. Then you add Marella, Maruca, Wylie, Stina, all those people. We don’t have a chance to connect with the characters.
2. Obvious favoritism
A few people have pointed this out already, and I thought I’d do the same. Shannon has very clear favorites of the series - which is fine, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes it’s used a little too much. Keefe is a very obvious favorite. We constantly focus on him and his story. At this point, Sophie AND Keefe are the protagonists. I love Keefe, but I want to learn about the injustices and discrimination of Bad Matches from Dex. I want to learn about the expectations of being a Vacker from Fitz and Biana. See what I’m saying?
3. Little plots abandoned
I feel like there have been so many times where Shannon starts this little idea and then throws it away. If you reread the books, you seem to find so many instances where there’s something, and then it’s just abandoned. For example, Magnate Leto (Forkle) says in I think Exile how he doesn’t have a wife and he seems quite sad about it. Or the time in…Flashback I believe where we meet Tinker. Tinker is such an interesting character. She freaks out when Forkle talks about explosives and he said that he wouldn’t make her build them - ‘not again’. HUH? And we’ve gotten no more out of it.
4. Overly focused on romance
Probably my biggest pet peeve with the series is that it is so so focused on romance. Having romance in the series is fine but there’s so much. I feel like Sophie barely even has any character left. You can tell that Shannon was just really excited to write the romantic relationships because even in the first book (WHEN SHES TWELVE) there are already intense moments. And the biggest thing is that characters like Keefe and Fitz (the love interests) are so much more important than characters like Biana and Dex (the friends). It’s a weird thing because Sophie should be apart of both groups but there’s just a weird focus on the guys that she’s into.
5. Lack of diversity
This is something that I think should just be improved in general. Most of the protagonists are very stereotypical and don’t have any diversity. Most of the main characters are white - which is fine but when it gets to be that ALL of the protagonists are, it just gets a little…you know? I mean, Tam, Linh, and Wylie are not white but they’re also not focused on at all in the series. It’s one of the reasons why people headcanon the Vackers to be POC so much. There’s also no LGBTQ+ characters - which again, fine for the most part but also…people of the queer community are incredibly common and the KOTLC characters seem so…not straight. So the fact that it’s been like ten books and there hasn’t been anything is just a little eh. Same with mental health, or physical abilities. Just a lack of diversity.
I love this series a lot, but like anything, it can always improve. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

The fight. Every moment was incredible. They really did slay those god damn dragons. No one had to make a single death save. The party was popping. Fig was constantly being the fucking COOLEST. Fabian telling Gorgug not to crash his parent's boat. Eugenia Shadow telling Riz he's the best student she's ever had. It was brilliant. Excellent.
"Sorry Oisin, shouldn't have been such a douchebag, we're gonna kill your grandma now" BRILLIANT. 10/10. I love it.
AS SOON AS SHE SAID DIVINE INTERVENTION I FUCKING CHEERED. K2 DIES TO SAVE THE WORLD BY SAYING "BLIMEY" NOT FUCKING CLICKBAIT.
Zac doing the dm bit is so funny.
K2 not knowing shit and pulling off a miracle is such pure Kristen its so fucking brilliant. THE UNCERTAINTY OF MAYBE BEING PREGNANT IS INSANE. I love Ally Beardsley.
Brennan's reaction to the pregnancy bit is so fucking funny. They broke this man's spirit in the funniest way possible.
"Haunted Wizard Clone Mini Golf Lightning Extravaganza" is the single funniest string of words imaginable. Brennan Lee Mulligan you are my favorite comedian ever.
"How much of this can we cut out, do you think?" Ally this is your bed, you have to lie in it, I'm so sorry. Funniest roll of all time.
WE ALMOST GOT THE GOLD TORNADO?? NOOOOOO.
Circling back, the flavor of Armor of Ayda is so cute. Ayda's protection is always over Fig no matter where she is.
THEY FUCKING DID IT GANG! Now for the penultimate battle! :]
The previews are making me go insane. RATGRINDERS FIGHT RATGRINDERS FIGHT RATGRINDERS FIGHT!
"I think I have to try" is making me so fucking excited. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING FIG????
LETS FUCKING GO! NEXT WEEK BABYYYYYY

Can I request Adaman and Irida comforting homesick reader
heyo! you didn't specify separate so i assumed it was at the same time! hope that's okay
🍓🍓🍓
For all their love to argue over Sinnoh, time and space, Adaman and Irida are always ready and eager to set aside their differences for your sake. Seeing you in the village together, sporting injuries, they take to fussing with surprising agreeableness. When you were exiled from Jubilife, they were quick to find you and fret over you without even a word of anger towards one another, all their ire focused on Kamado to have done this to you. Not even when you pick one to accompany you do they say anything, only bickering about it when you’re not around
With things settled and you back to your normal mission of just filling out the dex, Irida and Adaman get along better than ever. Their common ground of loving you dearly helps them, and they come together when one notices your shoulders sagging, the lack of genuine brightness in your eyes and your smile. They approach together, hands gentle as their words are soft. They coax you to tell them your woes, and when you do, they find themselves at a loss
Homesickness is not something either has really experienced. Sure, they’ve missed their clans, but that was with the knowledge of their home being a few days trip away. Your home is out of your reach for an undetermined amount of time, and as much as you love Hisui, you long for what you can remember. And they understand.
Irida takes you into her arms, rocking you side to side as you cry or vent or whatever you need. She pets your head, and promises you over and over that both the Pearl and Diamond Clans are happy to help you in your goal to get home. Whatever you need, shelter or information, they will help how they can. Rare Pokémon in the area? Irida herself will guide you to them and help you study them with the tips and tricks she grew up with passed on to you.
Adaman hugs you as well, far tighter than Irida. He clings to you, wanting to squeeze away your sadness, but aware he can’t. Instead, he offers distraction. He has plenty of silly tales to share, about himself, his clan, or even about Irida (though she shouts and stammers over him sharing such embarrassing stories). He’s a big brother of the clan, despite being younger than Mai, and he tickles you and tells silly jokes until you crack a smile again
Together, Irida and Adaman do their best to soothe your aching heart. Whether with reassurance or distraction, they give it all to you. After your dedication to them and their nobles despite being foreign of this place, they owe you that at least. They adore you sorely, and want you happy and safe.

Suffering & Different Beast
KotLC EPIC crossover (Fitz is Ody and Keefe is Eurylochus)
Fitz heard a splash from the side of his ship. He held up his hand to signal the crew. Stop.
“Fitz? Is that you?” a voice called from the water. It couldn’t be…
For a moment, almost sounded like his first mate, Keefe. But surely he was imaging it. “Sophie?” Fitz’s voice cracked as he raced to the side of the boat. He leaned over and saw his wife sitting on a rock jutting out of the waves. Her long golden hair billowed out behind her in the salty ocean wind.
“Fitz, after all these years, don’t you miss me?” She asked, hurt in her striking brown eyes.
“Of course I do.” His voice shook as he reached out to her.
“Then jump in the water and kiss me,” she said, smiling playfully.
“Sophie, I’ve told you so many times: I’m afraid of the water.”
“Oh, darling, I’ll make sure you remain safe. Now come play with me and our son!” Sophie laughed. Fitz couldn’t remember the last time he’d heard that sound. It was amazing.
“I really would love to, but you know I’d prefer my feet on solid ground.”
“I would keep you from suffering.”
“I don’t doubt that you would.”
“Then come into the water!” Fitz heard the urgency of Sophie’s voice.
“Okay, fine. But first, can you answer a few questions?”
Sophie batted her lashes. “Of course.”
Fitz sighed his relief. “Okay, so, let’s pretend I was on the run from Poseidon. And let’s say he blocked the way home with massive storms and giant waves. Which route should I take to avoid him? How do I get home?”
Sophie’s face fell. “The only way home is through a place he’d never dare to go… It’s through the lair of Scylla.”
“No,” Fitz whispered, leaning back in shock.
“It’s your only way.”
“But.. Scylla has a cost.” Fitz's mind was whirling. Scylla, Scylla, Scylla. Greet the world with open arms, Fitz. The last voice was Dex. His friend, his brother in arms… He shoved the thought away.
“Well, you asked me and now you know, so jump in the water, Fitz!”
“Sophie, I would die for you, but can’t you let me stay dry on the boat?”
“Just, please,” she pleaded, “come into the water.”
Fitz sighed and straightened his back, shaking his head. “The things I do for you, Sophie.” Just as he was about to jump, he stopped, a glare marring his features.
“Let’s cut this charade, you aren’t my wife. You’ve been trying to kill me this whole time. I know underwater there are more of you hiding. That’s right, I know you’re a Siren.” He spat the last word with disgust.
“How do you know that?” Sophie asked, fear making its way onto her face.
“Well, for starters, my real wife knows that I’m not scared of the water. And my real wife knows I don’t have a son!” Fitz shouted.
“And,” Fitz added with a smirk, “you didn’t notice your friends got captured.”
“WHAT?” The siren yelled. She whipped her head to the side, eyes widening as she noticed the empty waters beside her.
“Since the Underworld, I’ve decided: I’m done suffering.” He gestured to his crew behind him, and then added, “We are a different beast now. No more us will die because of you. We are the manmade monsters.” He finished in a low snarl.
Keefe stepped forward and handed Fitz his bow and arrow. When Fitz took it, his fingers brushed his first mate’s hand. Keefe cleared his throat and said, “Captain, what are your orders?”
“Kill them all.”
Screams rose from the waters as his crew murdered the packs of sirens ruthlessly. Fitz helped, aiming his arrows at the siren disguised as his wife. She dodged, hissing and splashing salty water at his eyes.
While she was frantically dodging his shots, Fitz said, “When we were trying to escape Poseidon, we found a ship with no crew and figured out it must be sirens. We put beeswax in our ears and I played along when you pretended to be my wife. I read your lips and you were very helpful, but now that I know how to get back to Ithica, we don’t need you anymore.” He grinned evilly as the siren gasped. He used her momentary distraction to aim an arrow right between her ribs.
Aim.
Pull back.
Fire.
Athena’s mantra rang through his ears as blood spilled from the siren. Her scream was drowned out by all the others.
All I hear are screams.

okay thinking about the specifics of angels relationships with ppl in sr1
gat: self explanatory angel thinks hes sexy and has an obnoxious crush on him. throughout sr1 angel doesnt say anything about this and doesnt exactly make any kind of moves, hes naturally flirty but johnny just thinks its funny and nothing real. they have an immediate strong bond because johnny likes that angel is so brazen and loud and fight-ready, and angel respects johnny a lot while also admiring him and wanting to look out for him. angel spends the most personal time with johnny not just bc he likes him but bc they get on really well and their personalities match up nicely! and also because angel likes aisha too and loves hanging out with her
lin: angel likes her a lot! i hc her as trans 🥺 so i think they would bond over that bc no one else understands but also i like their dynamic and relationship as teasy and fun. like when she tells him not to fuck up her car when she fake-rescues donnie and boss does it anyways... i think they have a very loving back n forth sarcastic friendship. i also havent mentioned it yet but angel is SHIT at driving (cars) and i think lin would try and teach him to be a better driver and theyd have a lot of fun doing that together. they would also race even though angel is shit but its a fun bonding experience and lin gets an ego boost every time she wins (which is every race)
dex: i think angel has a very... professional relationship w dex. like they do jobs together and they work well as a team, angel respects him, but its also that their relationship is strictly and oddly formal and they dont spend much time together in friendly ways. i just think like perhaps their personalities dont gel but its that dex is very business-oriented and smart about things but angel, like johnny, is a guns blazing type of fighter, and the two of them dont have much in common outside of working together for the saints. its not to say angel doesnt Like dex bc he does! i think he finds him like funny and easy to joke around with, but they never talk about anything serious or deep and i just dont think they spend much 1 on 1 time together. especially not after sr1. with his job change in sr2 angel would think dex is a sellout and that he turned his back on his roots and his friends, and they wouldnt talk much anymore
troy: this one is complicated bc it spans into sr2. INITIALLY i think angel, through the fact he mostly hangs out with troy when hes also with dex, i think he distrusts troy and is suspicious about him. its mostly thanks to dex's suspicions but angel would agree.. like he Does think troy asks too many questions and his insistence on doing as little damage to cops as possible while trying to avoid non-saints related business is immedistely strange to angel, and though he doesnt suspect too much he just thinks troy is uncommitted and weak so angel doesnt spend like any personal time with him at all. GOING THROUGH SR2 and finding out troy was undercover but also that hes still trying to investigate the yacht explosion and also assist the saints under the table, angel would reconsider his thoughts on him a little. hed be like smug about knowing something was up with troy but hed also be really mad about it, not bc troy was undercover but that troy is still a cop, and whenever they meet or talk they definitely fight it out because angel is furious that troy thinks he can play both sides and act like he gives a shit about the saints when he actively works for the police. they probably agree to disagree on it but it takes a toll on troy (in my mind he quits the force after sr2) and angel doesnt have a positive relationship with him until that happens
thats it fornow but im THINKING

what are you top 5 fave nurseydex fics you've read? (a girl is needing recs)
oh yay!!! first of all i have to admit that over the years i've dipped in and out of omgcp tumblr and therefore have been very bad at staying up to date, so most of these are quite old. they are my favourites for a reason, however! also i did 6 not 5 lol <3
to be alone with you by @alocalband Will and Derek spend their junior year learning how to live together, learning how to be friends, and, eventually, figuring out that they'd like to be more.
i actually only read this fic recently, but it’s instantly one of my new faves. it is SO well written, the characterisations of every single character are perfect, and the story is so beautiful. i’ve reread it a few times already!
in so many words also by alocalband Derek writes a short story. That's his first mistake. His second is getting it published.
idk why but i absolutely live for fics where everyone on the outside knows what nursey and dex are up to except for them, and this one is really good at it. the ‘derek “nursey” nurse is unchill’ tag is very accurate in this case.
in front of the same small bathroom mirror by @geniusorinsanity It's not surprising that sharing a room changes things, but neither of them expect the most important conversations in their strange, awkward friendship to happen in their shared bathroom. (Or: five conversations Dex and Nursey have in a shared bathroom, and one in bed.)
i absolutely adore this story. dex and nursey learning to coexist and care for each other is so special to me and this fic captures it perfectly. honestly, anything by shelly is going to be a must-read, but this one is really really wonderful.
it drops with the gravity of rain also by geniusorinsanity It happens like this: “I don’t--this is a bad idea,” Dex says, his lips still tingling, his hands shaking on Nursey’s hips where he’s shoved him away. “This is a really bad idea, Nurse. I can’t--We can’t do this.” And there’s hurt in Nursey’s eyes and his bottom lip is swollen from Dex’s teeth, but he says, “Okay.” And then, “It’s chill, Dex. Just friends, then.” It happens like this: “Actually,” Nursey says, talking more to his granola than to them, “I kind of have a date.” It happens like this: When Nursey calls, Dex almost doesn’t pick up the phone.
another wonderful fic by shelly - i reread this one all the time. it’s such a lovely character study of dex and it tackles the subject matter so well. content warnings in the end notes.
things you said by @quidhitch / @maangoes “Awww, looks like Dex appreciates a lady in uniform,” Nursey teases, tucking his feet a little further beneath Dex’s thighs. “You have a thing with the head cheerleader back in high school Dexy? Hold her pom poms and kiss her whatnot?” Dex seems to be contemplating something, and Nursey figures it’s one of his lame clapbacks like your mom’s a pom pom. He brings the bottle to his mouth, smiling around the lip of it. “Actually, I’m more of a captain of the football team kinda guy.” Nursey chokes on his beer.
i always come back to this one. it’s just so sweet and funny. i remember reading it years ago and it has stuck with me all this time.
today the sun comes in by @playedwright Will looks beautiful, Derek thinks, and it isn’t fair. Time has done nothing to lessen the extent of his feelings, either. Derek realizes a little too late exactly why he was nervous. It has been four years, three months, and five days since they graduated from Samwell, and Derek is finally facing the undeniable fact that at some time during his college years, he fell in love with William J. Poindexter and never got around to falling out of it.
this is one of those special fics that stays with you. i have never been to seattle, but this story made me homesick for the city. mars is such a gorgeous writer and this fic is a perfect example of it! (also i miss u mars!!!)
this was fun, i've missed reccing fics! i hope i could be useful! maybe i'll do some more recent ones if I manage to keep up to date with the nurseydex tag <3

These Feelings Inside (How Deep Do They Go)
Chapter 12 - A Greater Story
Previous. Next. Masterlist.
Or read on ao3 here!
Word count: 2.5k words
Yayy new chapter!! Family feels, more lore, I've had most of it thought up since conception of the fic (albeit I didn't really hint at it nearly as much as I should've). Feels crazy to get to a chapter I've known I've had to write since the beginning (given that not all interactions of this fic were pre-planned)
Warnings: discussions of "death"
•~•~•~•~•~•
“It can be broken?” Keefe asked. “Hell yeah! Let’s go curse breaking!”
“It's not that easy,” Linh said, “there's a location we must swim out to, but we don’t even know its exact location.”
“A place?” Sophie asked.
“It has to do with the nature of our curse,” Linh replied. “We’ve always been treating it as a contract: trading your humanity and memories for “fresh start”, however it seems like it’s quite literally a contract.”
“What does that mean?”
Marella held out a bottle that had a note in it. “Paper contracts—this paper is completely irrelevant, I just randomly found it—but the gist is that there’s some secret place where the contracts are stored. I guess somehow, every time a contract is made, the physical thing appears in that location. If we can find our contracts and tear them apart, I think we can become human again. Maybe even get our memories back.”
“Oh, get memories back?” Fitz asked. He glanced at Sophie, then Keefe. “Isn't that good? It means if we're late, it should be fine?”
Marella sighed. “Hard maybe. Best to not risk wasting time. But as Linh said, we don’t really know its exact location. I know it's somewhere super far east though.”
“East,” Fitz murmured, “somewhere in the ocean?”
“Something like that.”
Sophie turned to Fitz. “We don’t know how long we’ll be out there, are you sure it’s a good idea for you to come with us? I don’t want you to drown or starve or—”
“Fitzy’s coming with us,” Keefe said, draping an arm over his shoulder.
“You’re not getting rid of me that easily,” Fitz said, taking hold of her hand. He pressed his lips to her palm, looking at her with so much love she could explode. “We’ll get the boat, and then we’ll head out.”
She nodded. “O—okay.”
•~•~•~•~•~•
“Y’know, it’s really convenient how we all just flock here,” Keefe mused. “Makes it real easy to find a person.”
“I spend as much time here as I do my own home,” Biana replied, not even bothering to look up at them as the three walked into the shop, more preoccupied with scrolling through her phone as she laid against Dex's shoulder. “You say all this, but the rest of us have been coming to this shop since like—middle school.”
“Ooh, what was Foster like?”
“Not that different, really. More shy, though. I bet you were a menace in middle school.”
“Hey! We weren’t talking about me!” Keefe protested, raising their hands in defense. “I have never been a menace!”
Not for the first time, Sophie wondered about what kind of life Keefe had lived before they’d been turned into a siren. Endless creativity, a knack for making jokes, they would have definitely stood out. A baby face starting to wear off, she wondered how they would have looked. Acne from growing up? I bet they didn’t have to deal with acne, I bet they would have been blessed unlike the rest of us normal people, she mused.
Maybe they would have had a lot of friends, they definitely weren’t afraid to speak up, unlike she had been. Friends… had Keefe lost friends?
“Maybe even get our memories back,” Marella had said.
An old previous life… had they ever been in—would Keefe—
“Hey, Foster,” Keefe called out, resting a hand on her shoulder, “isn’t there that thing you wanted to show Biana and Dex up in your room?”
Show them something? Her gaze caught Fitz’s, who smiled at her reassuringly. Oh. Right. She had to tell them.
“Oh?” Biana said, raising an eyebrow, “showing us something?”
She nodded, not trusting her own voice yet. She walked to the stairs, gesturing for both of them to follow. An inhale in four steps, an exhale in three. By the time she’d gotten to her room, she carefully got her breathing in order. She already managed to tell Fitz, which gave her the courage to continue.
“I need to tell you something. I’m sure you both—but mostly Biana have noticed that things have been a little odd. I’m going to explain everything.”
And so she did. From beginning to end, she explained how she’d really met Keefe (barring the whole kiss thing), to a slight explanation on siren lore, to the fact that she needed to leave for a while if she wanted to remain human. To their credit, both of them said nothing, just stared at her with wide eyes. It was only when Sophie provided them visual proof by submerging herself in the bathtub water did Biana finally say something.
“You have—I’m in a dream right now, right?”
Dex sighed. “Unless we’re both having a shared dream somehow, then no. This is—Sophie, what do I even say?”
But Biana wasn’t as silent, kneeling down in front of the tub, reaching out to grab both her shoulders. “Why didn’t you say anything? You’ve had me worried about you for weeks, and you insisted you were fine, but this is so much worse than I could have imagined! You talk about losing your memories and identity as if they are nothing—Sophie—don’t you get that we love you? That we would hate to lose you?”
Sophie reached out, wiping away a couple tears. “I know,” she whispered, because she knew it. She knew she was loved, she knew it undeniably, and she would always hate herself for ever having doubts about that. “I know. And I’m sorry. But it all happened, and I need to leave at sea for a while.”
“You’re family,” Dex said, “my parents would totally lend you their boat, even without an actual license. I do trust Wonderboy enough to not wreck their boat.”
“And I’m guessing that your parents know?” Biana asked.
Sophie looked away. “Not yet. I don’t know what to tell them. I don’t want them to think that they might lose another daughter. I can’t break their hearts like that.”
“You’ll have to, you know that, right?”
She sighed. “I know.”
~•~•~•~•~•
They went through the rest of the day in a relatively awkward manner, no one knowing what to really talk about. She’d seen Biana and Keefe talk about something with each other, but she was more stressed about how to start having that dreaded conversation. Biana and Dex left early to process things and also so he could ask his parents for their boat, while Fitz and Keefe sat beside her on the couch, attempting to give her moral support.
“I can come with you,” Keefe offered.
“I—” she started, but then got interrupted.
“So you can willingly let yourself be used as a target for anger again?” Fitz asked quietly. “You don’t have to do that, don't make yourself look worse in front of them. Sophie can handle her own battles.”
She wasn't sure how Fitz had initially processed things when Sophie had confessed to being a siren and then running away. She knew that Keefe had brought him with them when they went to comfort her, and she knew that Fitz had punched them in the arm. Neither of them held any resentment after that, if anything, they probably seemed even closer.
“I'm going to go now,” she declared, getting up.
Grady and Edaline were in their room, sitting on their bed. She froze, realizing that they were staring at a photo frame. Jolie.
“Mom, dad,” she called out, her voice thick. She wanted to step in rather than stand at the door, but her legs were glued to the ground. I'm sorry.
“Come in,” Edaline whispered.
Sophie walked into the room, her feet heavy as lead as she had to practically drag them forward.
“I…” she began, then trailed off. “I…” Damn it, voice, work! “I—”
“Please sit, Sophie,” Grady said, so she sat on the bed in front of them.
They were already tense, and she hadn't even said anything yet. How could she tell them that—
“There's something you haven't told us, right?” Edaline said, smiling, but everything about her expression screamed sorrow. Even her heart—even her heart flickered blue for a moment. “We know.”
“Mom, dad, for a while, I'm going to have to—”
“Leave?” she asked, reaching out to gently touch her cheek. The touch was feather-light, as if afraid of whether the sensation would be real or fake. “We know.”
“What do you—”
“We know you're involved with sirens, Sophie.” Grady's voice was quiet but cut through the air.
“You—” Her voice cut off. She could only stare up at them.
“We know,” he repeated, “of the curse. That you’ve gotten entangled with it.”
You know what that is? She wanted to ask. How do you even know? How did you know I have it? How long have you known?
He sighed, placing the picture frame off to the side. “I think it's time we tell you the full story about Jolie.”
Jolie? What did Jolie have to do with sirens?
“Jolie worked at our shop, but she also wanted to explore different things. Of course, we didn’t stop her, we wanted her to do things she liked. She eventually started dating. Her—her…” Grady’s voice cut off as he looked away, his fists clenched.
“Her boyfriend, Brant, struggled to find a job, and so he eventually ended up finding one with a group of siren hunters, though at the time, we knew them as researchers,” Edaline continued.
Siren hunters, she mouthed. Since… even way back then?
“We thought it was ridiculous, but Jolie wanted to join him. She wanted to see if sirens were real. We let her go. Their crew weren’t making progress, and eventually Brant succumbed to despair. A siren got him, though we didn’t know the details at the time.”
Oh. Oh.
“And so Jolie grieved, and grew depressed. We did our best to support her but—she eventually found herself drawn to the waters. A siren found her—we saw it happen ourselves. A siren sang, kissed her, but we were too late.”
Her heart felt a pang as she thought about her parents witnessing their child being cursed, and being too late. That their adopted daughter too, was cursed.
“We were far away, so we tried running. We probably could have seen the siren who cursed her, but already, Jolie was singing, trying to take Eda too.”
Sophie glanced at her mom, who was holding her dad’s hand.
“And then months later, working at a local shop, was Brant. Just… there. As if nothing had happened. A drowned man living his life.” Grady’s other hand clutched at the bedsheet, taking on a dazed, almost haunted look. “I questioned him, but he said he had no idea who Jolie was. When I showed him a picture, he said he recognized her.
“How?” Sophie asked. “You said he was cursed, how did he know her? How was he human again?”
He looked away. “He was the one who passed the curse onto Jolie. And he admitted it too, as if he hadn’t been in love with her once. I nearly—"
Edaline rested a hand on his shoulder, gently squeezing it. “We know now, that he’s a different person, and lacks the memory of the past, but it wasn’t easy on either of us to run across him when we’d thought he was dead. We eventually managed to just sit and he explained to us what being a siren was like.”
So Jolie…is a siren, she’s not dead. She’s a siren. Is she still swimming out there?
The thought that she could run into Jolie had her heart racing. Just how many people were out there as sirens?
“So you know… that I’m one,” she said, repeating their words from earlier.
“We had no idea, at first. We managed to figure out that Keefe was a former siren, given that Brant is a former siren, and the similarities. But we had no idea about the curse… splitting between the two of you, that’s something we only realized very recently.”
“I’m sorry,” Sophie whispered.
Edaline pulled her into a hug. “Don’t apologize just because of what you felt. It’s not your fault for having feelings, no matter how irrational they must feel in hindsight.”
She buried her face into the crook of her neck, her body shaking. Not her fault for having feelings… she squeezed Edaline tighter. For several minutes, they sat there, Edaline rubbing gentle patterns on her back, Grady taking a hold of her hand. Her eyes stung, though no tears actually fell. She pulled away, and Grady gently cupped her cheek.
“I want to say that I should come with you,” he said, “I don’t want to lose a daughter again to the siren’s curse. But you’re grown up. Not the scared, little kid we took in all those years ago. You know what you’re going into.”
“I’m still scared,” she confessed. “I don’t want this to be the last time I see you.”
“It won’t,” he said, his heart flickering between a determined orange and a heartbroken blue. “You’ll come back to us, fully okay.”
“You’ll take care of Keefe, if anything happens, right?”
“Yeah, we will.”
~•~•~•~•~•
She got to packing some bags: clothes, lots of easily storable food (“Y’know, I’m sure I could catch a fish for you to cook, Fitzy”), lifejackets (even if she knew FItz could swim and her and Keefe wouldn’t need it), just about anything that crossed her mind as something they would need. Fitz met up with Dex to get the boat arranged and make sure it was in proper condition. It felt as if in no time at all, everything was prepared for them to head out. How long would she be gone, she wondered. Hopefully not too long, the thought of being gone for weeks made her almost not want to go.
But she had to. She had to go, or she'd forget everyone and become a siren fully.
“You better get back to us safe,” Biana said, pulling her into a tight hug. She turned to Keefe, narrowing her eyes. “You take care of Sophie, and take care of my brother.”
Keefe nodded. “I won’t let anything happen.”
Fitz smiled at her. “We’ll make sure Sophie comes back, with her memories. Promise.”
Fitz and Keefe both boarded the boat. When Biana pulled away, Sophie turned to her parents.
“Remember we love you,” Grady said, “don’t you ever forget it.”
“I won’t forget it.”
She had all these people here, helping her. Remembering their love had managed to delay the curse. She wouldn’t forget it. She would never forget that she was loved.
Sophie turned and boarded the boat.

Seren's Studies: The Second (And Final) Odd Squad UK Trailer
Tumblr media
Cute that FRP suddenly cares about Odd Squad when they haven't even so much as peeped about it for...what, over a year now? Two years, maybe?
Yeah. Anyway, it seems that PBS had to step up on their alt -- the franchise's social medias, you see -- and grab it from them, because it's clear they weren't gonna do it. Especially not during Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month when Alma's Way is the top dog. (You know how Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is PBS Kids's golden kid? Alma's Way is FRP's. It's like the Spongebob of the prodco, really.)
But enough stick-up-the-anus cynicism. I did one Seren's Study on the gadget competition results video, and now I'm moving on to the one for the second trailer for Odd Squad UK. Some of it repeats bits from the first trailer, but it's otherwise completely new.
Let's dive below the break!
Tumblr media
If you look closely, the badge number says 86.
Which would be fine, if I hadn't run numbers only to realize that neither Orli nor Ozzie have a badge number of 86.
So either someone's trippin' balls or I'm the one trippin' balls and can't math correctly.
Tumblr media
What sleep deprivation does to a motherfucker: I saw this and immediately thought of "Two Agents and a Baby" because of the equipment Ozzie was holding. So I thought, "Okay, so they're babysitting?"
It's actually from "Planes, Trains and Oddmobiles". And as I've said before, I can predict, with stunning accuracy, what shots and what scenes line up with which episode. If you've seen the synopsis for "Planes, Trains and Oddmobiles", this brief snippet speaks for itself.
(Makes me wonder...anyone wanna set up a PonyGuessr game, but for Odd Squad screencaps? Would be fun to test your knowledge! I know I'd love one.)
Tumblr media
*in about the best Bill Nye voice I can do*
Please...consider the following.
Dino Dex crossover.
(Hey, it's not impossible. If you've been watching this franchise, you know it's not impossible.)
Tumblr media
They didn't even try with the house thing.
Is that not the same row of houses from "Training Day"? Am I delulu? Am I tripping? Or is that the same row of houses? Different color, maybe?
...I CHECKED. IT IS THE SAME FUCKING ROW OF HOUSES. BY G O D I'M ON FIRE!!!
Tumblr media
Ah, I see we've also got some not-so-subliminal advertising for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in here.
(See, it's funny because, IIRC, they made a jab at the UK in the trailer. So in a way, you could say they've come full circle!)
Tumblr media
Funny how we go from the appropriate reaction one should have to having lightning shoot out of your head to "this is going to fuck up my entire life because I can't wear hats now" in...oh, I don't know...a scene or two, maybe? Five at best.
Tumblr media
Ah, and we have our first look at Dottie Doubloon from "A Dicey Situation"! I will say, she does kind of look like a pirate attire-wise, which is what I was hoping for. Maybe she'll talk like a pirate too aaaaaaaand I just figured out the connection between her and Captain O and I need to go absorb my fat lil' body into the grass outside now thank you.
Tumblr media
new villains
shows the Icy Mousey about to do a Hadouken
I don't think I need to explain what the direct distinction between creatures and villains are. It's like looking at a dog that bites your hand and equating him to a guy who killed his son. They both did bad things, but only one is an antagonistic animal in the more instinctual sense while the other one is a straight-up villain.
At least they show The Trifler right after...but still. It's all about sentience. Do I need to make a whole-ass sentience chart and tell- just keep rolling with it?
*sighs* Okay, fine...if I must.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry...I honestly didn't believe this trailer would make me laugh, but then this guy comes in with a "Gadzooks!" while holding something gross and I lost it.
Tumblr media
Behold: genderbent adult-aged Willow from The Owl House has made his way into Odd Squad UK. He's even got the hat on and everything!
Tumblr media
new gadgets
shows the tubes
I'm just...I'm fuckin' tired, man. Is this some kind of joke? Is this a game? Because I want a Perplexus ball and not this shit, thank you.
Tumblr media
It's like blinking Oprah...Oprah...she do the blink...in "Dance Like Nobody's Watching"...but...but 's Captain O...with a squinty squint...
Alternatively: I lol'd, until I serious'd.
Tumblr media
I see Orwell Kubrick has some charm beneath all that "scare the kids but not too much". Good for him.
Tumblr media
*with the tightest fucking smile any doctor has ever seen on a person*
"Is that his house? I- Is that Onom's fucking house? Take me to my best friend's house, I loved you then like I love you now? T- The iPod touch circa 2011?!"
Tumblr media
I will say, I appreciate the analytics behind each pose here. Lots to dissect, if the Discord server is any indication.
Tumblr media
Those five words might've just put a dent in my "ah, they'll drop 'em all on the 1st and forget about it" theory.
It could still happen -- PBS still hates the show, mind you. Netflix, Hulu, and most other streaming services do the same thing. There's a chance. You watch. You watch and see.
--------------------------------------------
Overall, a nice solid trailer. Doesn't exactly stoke any hype in me, but it did stoke my curiosity in finding out what happens. Funny enough, unlike the Season 3 trailer, there's no mention of the big bad or anything. At least there, The Shadow got a couple seconds of screentime. For the Terrible Three, though, there's nothing. Which...concerns me on a number of levels in terms of how well they're going to handle the story arc.
But either way, we've got a week to go until launch date, so I'm not expecting too much else news-wise. Still waiting for BBC to drop those teaser images, and for PBS Kids's main Twitter account to recognize the show and rep it with not-so-subtle lil' hints using past seasons. (Only one of those sounds more plausible. I don't think I need to say which one.)
Like I've said before, my first Seren's Study regarding the new series/season, when it drops, will be an episode followup on "Odd Ones In". And before you ask me if I'm going to be reuploading episodes onto my YouTube channel: clearly you haven't been there for all the times I bitched and moaned on Twitter about PBS, their distribution branch, or their security partner taking down my videos that contained snippets of episodes. It's not happenin'. Given how the series/season getting another season/more episodes is dependent on legal viewership, promoting illegal means of watching it feels wrong. If Odd Squad UK gets a continuation of some sort, maybe they can take steps towards improvement. That's what I'm hoping for, personally.
Seren out!
So, with all that being said, I will see you all sometime in early October for that first followup. Keep your eyes peeled for more news in the meantime, because we could either get a trickle or a flood.
Oh yeah, and if you wanna watch the trailer, view it below!
(Editor's note: Managed to kick open the floodgates last night before I even published this. Teaser images are already up, news articles are sharing bits of info...don't ask me how, just accept it.)

okay I think this is jaide's final main team, I forgot to toggle female for blaziken but you saw the previous post so heheh
vvv me rambling below about each 'mon vvv
GALLADE
- Named Remy, based on my actual save file for him in my Platinum game. Remy is Jaide's ace, and she's very attached to him. Jaide is a very reckless trainer and goes forth with anything - Remy would always be the type to evaluate the situation and would immediately drag her away if his judgement says it's too dangerous - but if not, he attends to her.
- Despite her goofy nature, he's still very overprotective and he trusts her.
TOGEPI
- Named Pipino, based on my first gameplay of HGSS. Togepi is actually the newest member of her team, initially finding Togepi as a lost egg found in the streets. She, along with Red took him under her care and tried to look for whoever may have lost their egg. Eventually they found the owner, however the egg had hatched into a Togepi and developed a deeper connection with Jaide and preferred her over the actual owner - so the owner basically gave her the little baby and she named him Pipino. Pipino totally sees Red as another parental figure
- Pipino is still quite young, so he hasn't really developed a proper understanding of battling and mostly acts as a companion and cheerleader. All of Jaide's other Pokémon babysits him and loves him. (Kaia especially)
BLAZIKEN
- Named Kaia, though sadly I don't remember her given name in my first R/S gameplay from years ago so I went with this one.
- Very friendly and cheerful, Jaide loved to play with Kaia as a Torchic and she grew to be a very physical and strong fighter.
LEAFEON
- Named Vivi. I don't have much input for her sadly, but she's crucial when Jaide met Red for the first time in decades.
MANTINE
- Name TBD, a recent add to the team so I don't have much input here.
- Though Mantine is Jaide's token fast travel Pokemon, she either surfs on them or water skiis. Possibly got them from Johto
REUNICLUS
- Name TBD, also another recent add to the team so I have to think about them
- I added them because Duosion's dex entry that states "it has two brains, which think independently causing two actions at one - but if the brain thinks alike, it exhibits stronger psychic powers" and I just went oh yeah that's a Jaide kinda Pokemon fr fr.... also it just looks like her idk HWHAGRGAHSHA
