My dog knows all the God Techniques; peeing, pooping, that one where his dick falls out when you're rubbing his belly, and it touches your hand and really creeps you out. There are others, but I believe those are the main ones.

The Short Okami Ramble Post So My Friends, Mutuals and Followers Who Haven't Already Might Go Play It
Tumblr media
Note: I'll try to keep spoiling the fun surprises to a minimum but obviously I'll be talking a lot about the game. I'm sure others have done a better job of explaining it but, eh, who cares? This is just an excuse to gush about it.
So, for the basics, this game came out on the PS2 back in 2006/2007 (depending on your region), made by Clover Studios (which sadly closed a few months after its release). It has since been ported to the Wii, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and onto PC through Steam. The name "Okami" is actually a pun, something I didn't get until my friend (the one who's playing it) recently told me that (as the Wiki puts it)
' the word ōkami (狼) in Japanese means "wolf". The kanji characters (大神), pronounced identically, mean "great deity", so the main character is a great wolf deity.'
I must've known on a spiritual level with how much I adored this game lmao.
Also I mean, look at it. The game's art style is... gorgeous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like??? I love it so much!!!
.
STORY
Tumblr media
It obviously takes a LOT of inspiration from Japanese mythology. The main character is a wolf named Amaterasu (after the Shinto sun goddess). She is the wielder of the Celestial Brush (her tail, something my friend didn't notice at first) with a collection of techniques that, when you start the game, have been scattered across the land of Nippon among the gods to which she is the "mother" of. Gotta collect em all!
The pre-main menu video talks about the legend of Shiranui (aka Amaterasu's previous incarnation), a white wolf that helped Nagi (a fabled human warrior) defeat and seal the dreadful eight-headed serpent Orochi (based of course off of the Yamata no Orochi) that was eating the maidens of Kamiki Village year after year. Before this climactic fight, the villagers had assumed the wolf was another minion of Orochi--but then Shiranui ran in after Nagi like "yo worm catch these PAWS", and then strange miracles occurred that gave them the upper hand. Sadly, Shiranui's wounds from the fight were too great. A statue was erected in a small shrine to honor the wolf for helping save the village.
Then the game starts a hundred years later, when darkness was unleashed once more. The guardian wood sprite of Kamiki, named Sakuya, protected the village within a peach on her tree, and using the last of her power summoned Amaterasu back into the world. The goddess had weakened in her absence, losing many of her abilities, hence the player has to go retrieve them all to become stronger and defeat evil. (By the way, learned that the game director loved The Legend of Zelda games and, yeah, I can tell.) You don't say much, being a wolf, but you are joined by a little buddy named Issun, a traveling painter who is interested in acquiring the Celestial Brush techniques himself and so decides to come along for the ride.
And boy, is it one fun ride! A lot of stuff happens after this but, of course, I'd rather you play and experience it for yourself. Even if I'd love to ramble about all the different characters lmao
NOTE: It's a dated game, so it will have some tropes of the times and jokes that might not land well nowadays. I don't think it has anything horrible in it, but obviously your mileage may vary, so keep the ratings in mind before you decide to play.
.
GAMEPLAY
Tumblr media
Speaking of brush techniques! They're the power-ups and abilities of the game. You start out with the Sunrise ability because. Y'know. Sun goddess. But you acquire many many more throughout the game. Thirteen total techniques exist--plus upgrades! Moves like Power Slash, Inferno, Cherry Bomb, Waterspout, Bloom, etc. They're used for combat, transport, finding secrets etc.
There are other abilities in the game too, most you get by going to one of the dojos to be taught by Onigiri-sensei. Yes, this old man will teach a dog new tricks. AND! There are several weapons of three different types: Reflectors, rosaries, and glaives. Each type, and each individual weapon even, has its own playstyle and abilities--and you can have two equipped, with one main and one secondary, giving even MORE customization to your combat style. I used rosaries my first few playthroughs with the other two types as secondaries, though nowadays I like to mix it up; my friend mains glaive, with rosaries as secondary.
The way you enter most combats is by running into a floating "demon scroll" that wanders the overworld, which then spawns a barrier around a small arena filled with various demons. There's also Demon Gates, which are cursed gates that sorta sit there messing up the place until you run through it and trigger an unescapable fight. Clearing those up often cleanses the land and gains you rewards, or unlocks new areas, so knock em dead!
Boss fights, well, they're generally very obvious when they'll start. Most are behind save points or checkpoints, and have a lot of build-up in the game. You generally won't get caught off-guard, but saving often and with multiple save files is still a good tactic to make sure you don't get your tail whooped or accidentally miss something you can't get back to. (Says I, the spastic saver.)
.
RECOMMENDED? HELL YES.
This game was obviously something I latched onto as a kid, but I've replayed it from start to finish so many times because I truly do enjoy the whole experience.
The characters are interesting and fun, the plot weaves together a lot of smaller stories into the larger whole, and the art style and gameplay really caught my eye and still kind of wows me. The themes of the game involve a lot of duty, honor, loyalty, heroism, compassion, and faith (which, while obviously used a lot in the heavenly sense, since you're playing AS the deity, I always felt like ended up more as a "faith in your friends" kind of way).
And there are so many ports and remasters of this game that it's pretty much available to everyone nowadays! If you haven't already played this game, I highly recommend giving it a try, if only to run around freely as a wolf and kick some tail to save the world.
Tumblr media
Even if you don't pick it up though, I highly recommend looking at the art and listening to the soundtrack, because they are gorgeous even without any of the context! Some may have spoilers of course. But, there's a reason why this game was often used as proof of the argument that Video Games Are Art.

Bento Warning | amatsuku
continued from here with @mpxtsukuyomi
Amaterasu stood quietly, gazing at her twin as he enumerated the myriad of reasons why she should not do what she had been doing for the past few weeks, which was to drop off food in Boljande for him. When she had strolled in a few weeks ago, her intention was to perhaps see what he was up to, under the pretense of buying a few trinkets for some of her family.
Tsukuyomi had not been present at her first visit, but the goddess that he had at his employ was. As unnerving Hel was, the petite goddess was helpful if not a bit standoffish and she had commented on the gracefully packed lunch she had been carrying with her. In a stroke of inspiration, she had offered the bento to Hel, and the goddess had accepted.
To Amaterasu's surprise however, Hel had opened the bento right there and taken a few bites from the homemade onigiri she had made. Hel had then proceeded to ungraciously comment that while her food was delicious, Hel had had the pleasure of tasting Izanami's food. Amaterasu hadn't known what to say beyond a polite smile, that she almost completely missed Hel's thinly-veiled suggestion of bring more bento, for the other people in the jewelry store. Amaterasu had thought Hel was going to be discreet about passing the packed lunches to her boss, but it seemed Tsukuyomi was far too discerning.
"I apologize," She says now, their native language flowing naturally between them and the first thing she spoke after Tsukuyomi's words. Hel hadn't been warm, but Amaterasu hadn't felt she was completely antagonistic about her presence. But the Japanese goddess was not about to call out her brother for the reasons he stated if he believed them. "I was merely..." She trails off, finding herself without much of a reason beyond the obvious.
"As much as I love this island, there aren't any restaurants that cater our cuisine. At least, nothing like home." Amaterasu speaks softly, casually shrugging. "Hel has been kind enough to tell me my food is not as delicious as Izanami's apparently. So I apologize if it has inconvenienced you. I was just..." She clutches her fingers in a rare display of concern.
"Then, can we at least have tea? When you're available?"

//more notes about divine possession, a bit more broad than the last one this time.
Long post.
But basically there are three kinds of divine possession.
“true” divine possession - This is the most like regular possession where a deity enters the body of a human. Very few physical changes occur in this type, but this kinda allows a god to take over most of the body’s conciousness. Very straightfoward and is most often used as a god’s disguise since it muddles their magic a bit and doesn’t use their physical bodies. These are usually pretty fast and VERY rare since the deities aren’t truly imposed by much.
Regular divine possession - sometimes a mortal of some sort will be connected to an actual god in some way (usually in the form of being their appointed hero, like onigiri!uchida is for susano’o and fumiko is for amaterasu in my lore), these mortals will be blessed with their own form of divine possession. This is generally the most physically ‘healthy’ form of divine possession given that it is two mortals that fuse together to create a demigod. However there is a far wider spectrum of disaster due to both consciouses having equal control over the new demigod (see above link). Other than that, the body doesn’t usually harm either party. A demigod’s form is normally the unblessed’s body as the base with some features of the blessed’s. The most drastic change is the power a demigod is created with, which makes them far more powerful than either party on it’s own, the real trick is finding a combo that a blessed could be totally be fine with sharing with an unblessed. This is almost exclusively used for battle due to being incredibly draining.
Kamikui corruption - The Scary One(tm). As the kamikui were once gods like Amaterasu and Susano’o, they too have something the likes of the above true divine possession. However, it’s become perverted to suit their new monstrous natures. This is without a doubt, the least healthy form of divine possession.
Corruption brings the greatest physical and mental changes to a mortals body, usually twisting their bodies and minds to suit the purposes of the kamikui (which is greatly exemplified in cursed!Momotarou, who changes drastically to suit Tiamat’s destructive nature and becomes an almost draconic being). While mortals and gods are far more willing to let the unblessed’s body go, the kamikui prefer to watch the unblessed struggle for their freedom in all manner of ways, including making the person they shared bodies with immortal (which a god can, too, but it almost never happens since they do not feel the need to use that as a means of spreading their influence like the kamikui do.) In the case the unblessed is unfortunate enough to be made “immortal”, they can only truly die to a deity, be it god or demigod.
While the use of “Divine” in the technique’s name is probably is meant to lean it towards good, divine possession is actually extremely neutral and can change purpose largely because of who is preforming it. It can also change drastically between the two bodies being fused because not always is a combination necessarily good, but it isn’t always bad either.

Note
So wait, what are the canon sexualities/genders? Momotarou's trans?
Trans Momo is a headcannon I have because HOLY HELL THAT MAN IS JUST RADIATING GENDER CONFUSION ALL THE TIME (I wouldn't say "dysphoria", but he's definitely confused on who he is). The game has used him in feminine terms before (Miroku sometimes refers to him in the "chan" terms, though it's usually a joke) and in an arc of the game he's wearing a pink, frilly dress. I'm just sayin, there's no way that's a cisgender man-- Definitely trans-coded to some degree.
As for characters sexuality/genders... (these are all headcannons, however everyone is queercoded in the actual game (play Onigiri and you'd know- *cough cough*--) )
Lady Shizuka: Bisexual
Crystal: Pansexual
Yoshitsune: Transgender Lesbian
Miroku: Bisexual
Ibaraki Douji: Pansexual
Momotarou: Transgender Pansexual (rarely I say he's Omnigender as well)
Kaguya: Lesbian
Susanoo: Pansexual
Amaterasu: Asexual Panromantic
I also have a list of headcannon sexualities and genders for the side characters, but I'll only give them out if asked because there's a lot of side characters in Onigiri :33

    ABOUT ONIGIRI
In a mystical world where humans and supernatural creatures co-exist, the dark and ancient race of beings known as the Kamikui are on the rise. To stop them, the people of Japan will need a mighty army of heroines with unparalleled fighting skills. Unfortunately, times are tough, and they’ll have to make do with a runaway Princess; the axe-wielding and frequently drunken daughter of an Orc tavern owner; an internet troll who lives in her own fantasy world; and a frazzled fighter who would love to stick to the rules of combat if she could reign the others in for even half a second. It may not be an epic out of legend, and Japan might be doomed, but at least the road to damnation is going to be a heck of a fun journey as our wannabe world-savers cut loose in ONIGIRI!

//Susano’o My-feathers-aren’t-ruffled Mikoto is probably the second most ‘clean’ member of the Onigiri group.
With his divine avatar being a Yatagarasu, Susano’o finds it hard to resist the urge to preen. So if left to his own devices, he can often be caught picking at his hair and clothes. Sometimes, especially if frustrated with someone he’s close to, his ‘preening’ can become destructive and he’ll accidentally tear holes into his clothing if he finds a loose strand of cloth.
He was actually much worse trying to resist doing it as a kid, which prompted Amaterasu to tease him and gave Fuujin and Raijin fuel for embarrassing stories to tell, much to the god’s dismay.
