Websites that demand you give them extremely private information to "verify your age"

Go back to the top of this article and reread that transcript of Rep. Buddy Carter grilling TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. Now, Carter is a dunderhead, but he’s dunderheaded in a way that illuminates just how bad COPPA enforcement is, and has been, for 25 long years.
Carter thinks that TikTok is using biometric features to enforce COPPA. He imagines that TikTok is doing some kind of high-tech phrenology to make sure that every user is over 13 (“I find that [you aren’t capturing facial images] hard to believe. It is our understanding that they’re looking at the eyes. How do you determine what age they are then?”).
Chew corrects the Congressdunderhead from Georgia, explaining that TikTok uses “age-gating”: “when you ask the user what age they are.”
That is the industry-wide practice for enforcing COPPA: every user is presented with a tick-box that says “I am over 13.” If they tick that box, the company claims it has satisfied the requirement not to spy on kids.
But if COPPA were meaningfully enforced, companies would simply have to stop spying on everyone, because there are no efficient ways to verify the age of users at the scale needed for general operation of a website.

Man, I'm so tired.
I was told AI was going ot improve society in a way, and what about that? Hell, even some members of my fam (who have something to do with IT) are amazed by the technolody (and love to talk about it, lol) but apart from the fact AI can, say, spot cancerous tissues in x-rays faster than a human doctor, I haven't really seen it being used to improve anything other than the thickness of rich folk's wallets. And don't get me started on the mf tsunami of useless data (ai generated images) the internet is being flooded with.
I'm saying this bc, at some point, I'll probably have to nuke this blog out of existence (along with all of my other art blogs ig), and it saddens me. I want to share my drawings with people, at the same time I'm not willing to feed corpos any more data than I have to to function on the net.

Public Service Announcement:
The search engine “DuckDuckGo” is owned by the Russian government. You should avoid using it.  And dump the app if you have it on your phone.
“ your traffic remains unencrypted on DuckDuckGo, so someone can intercept it, see your IP, spy on your traffic, and intercept your private information.”
Similarly TikTok is owned by the Chinese government.
Be cautious about what apps you put on your devices.

In 1998, Congress passed the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which prohibits online service providers from collecting the data of children under the age of 13 without parental consent.
COPPA is remarkable, first because it is one of the very, very few federal privacy guarantees enacted by Congress, an exclusive club whose founding member is the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988, passed by Members of Congress panicked at the thought of video-store clerks leaking their porn rental histories.
But the other remarkable thing about COPPA is how poorly it is enforced.
In this regard, COPPA is very similar to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the EU’s 2016 landmark privacy law. The GDPR has many more moving parts than COPPA, as befits a general data-protection regulation, but at core, the GDPR seeks to incinerate the absurd fiction at the root of commercial surveillance: namely, that we “consent” to commercial surveillance by clicking “I agree” on long, unreadable terms of service.
Under the GDPR, companies that want to collect, sell or process your data need to explain themselves, clearly: they have to tell you what they’re collecting and how they plan on using it.

The Ongoing Need for Cybersecurity Education in Families
Our homes are no longer physical spaces but extended into cyberspace. Every gadget we introduce into our homes-whether smartphone, tablet, or smart refrigerator-opens an entry point to a perilous world. This is not new, but what needs emphasis is that digital threats are not just technological but psychological and emotional, especially as far as families are concerned. The Digital Realm: A…

YouTube and the way they exploit you and your children.
Youtube is pushing this idea of it being a kid friendly site. Despite the fact that for years, they've been involved in some of the most questionable Internet dramas.
A lot of their content creators and online personalities have been guilty of a slew of crimes, and yet they push their channels and garner ad revenue.
They claim to be in support of the LGBTQ+ community, womens rights, and racial justice... Just take a look on their official page. Yet they continually promote advertise and push content from hardcore incels, racist radicals, and right wing content creators.
See, YouTube says one thing, and shows another story. They'll even go so far as to put all these guidelines in place, no profanity, no sexual content. And yet there are plenty of videos dehumanizing women and pushing sexualized thumbnails, all catered to children. These channels are not taken down, and most of them are catered to children.
Their latest attempts to appeal to (and aid) the pedophiles on their site, (and perhaps running it?) is by far the most egregious and horrifying. Making it so that Creator's are forced to give them government protected private information. I'm talking PASSPORTS, PHOTOS, and HOME ADDRESSES PEOPLE.
Now you're probably asking yourself, why on earth would YOUTUBE "need" a government document... Well, that would make it so that young women, men, and KIDS are suddenly soooo much easier to find of course! Now they'll know exactly what you look like, where you live, and how to create a passport to take you somewhere far away!
Let's not forget that YouTube has had more than it's fair share of horrific stories come out... maybe we as a public should start questioning the people who are in charge of, and putting such creepy invasive things in place... YouTube claims to be a site for it's users, but do their true intentions linw up? Because all I've seen lately of their site is hate filled hate mongering practices. And insidious "guidelines" that basically act as a manual for human trafficking.
