MADS MIKKELSEN SIGNED MY HANNIBAL BODY PILLOW 💖💖💖

Thanks ECCC, for another wonderful Hannibal Reunion Weekend! ❤️ I had an absolutely lovely time with Mads and Hugh, and all my awesome Fannibal friends! Always so sad when it’s over, but very grateful for all the fun memories. Here are a few fun highlights!

I gifted Mads some caramels and he smiled and goes “Oh, are these chocolates?” I told him they were handmade caramels and he was like “Ooh!”, held up the box and did this cute smoochy kiss at it and then gave it to his handler (Steven again!) to add to his gift stash. 🎁

I asked him to sign a few figures for me and that I would have another new Embarrassing Thing for him later. (“Alright, then!”) I was sheepish about it and said “I hope you don’t mind…!” and he was like “I don’t mind at all, bring it on!” and did this Gimme Gimme hand motion. 😆

I told him it was maybe about as weird as The Boobies (the Hannibal mousepad), but he was totally fine with that so maybe it wasn’t a big deal. 🤣 He smiled and said “🎵~You’re The Booby Girl~🎵!” and I just started laughing and said “Why yes I am!” 😌

The fact that Mads Mikkelsen knows me as The Booby Girl is a title I will wear with pride.

“The Girl With the Tiddies” and “Chicago Girl”, he called me at RDC6.

I told him I appreciated his tolerance for my nonsense and he smirked, “I bet your family does, too.” 😏 TERRIBLE MAN. 🤣 I got a selfie with him and he gave me a fist bump and a “see ya later”~ ❤️

The Hannibal Panel itself was, as usual, WONDERFUL. Mads & Hugh are just fantastic! Their chemistry and friendship really shines through in their easy way of chatting with each other, and it’s always such a joy to see them interacting and chatting about our favorite series. ❤️

I’m not going to do a whole write-up about it as the panel is viewable online, and others have posted far better quality photos than any of mine came out. I’m always doing my very best to ‘live in the moment’ during the panels because I just want to take it all in as best I can!

For my photo ops Mads was so sweet! ❤️ When I came up, he turned to me and goes “There she is! C’mere~” and held his arms open and did this cute beckoning hand gesture to bring me over, and let me hug him for the photo ❤️☺️

When I asked him to sign my Hannibal pillow case he goes “Let’s do it, give it here, let’s go! 😤💪🏻 *gimme gimme hand gestures again* No hesitance at all, no weird looks, he was all in 🤣 What a seriously great sport! 💖

He also signed some of my art for me (which I gifted him as well) and he said they were very nice~ 🥹💖

I later went for my duo photo with Mads and Hugh and when it got to my turn and Mads saw me, he again goes “Oh, here she is!” and did his cute customary beckoning hand motions, and Hugh gave me a big smile “Hello!” ❤️

Eryn later gifted me her photo op as she was stuck in the Summit building and couldn’t make it back to the Arch in time for a pic, so she was like “HERE, GO” and so I was able to sneak in a bonus solo photo at, literally, the very last minute before Mads left.

Mads was just chilling in the chairs with his handlers, and I told him “my friend was supposed to be here but she couldn’t make it in time, so she gave me her ticket.” Mads grinned “Well then it will just be the 2 of us this time, c’mere” and let me give him a big hug again. 🥹

I had a few more really memorable and funny interactions with him but this post is getting long enough so those are posted on my patreon. My lucky patrons can read all my Mads Mikkelsen squealing and gushing over there. 🤣 (You guys get to see him basically call me TINY haha 🤣)

I also had a few interactions with Hugh which were very chill and nice! ❤️ I asked him to sign my art and gifted him a print as well and he was very sweet. He doesn’t see my silly face as often as Mads so I don’t think he recognizes me at all, but he is always kind and courteous!

I also managed to get Gina Torres to sign my Hannibal book! She is absolutely radiant in person, and I told her that her Bella was just heartbreaking in the show. She agreed, and said she kept hoping she'd beat him (Hannibal, at his game), but... 💔 Very lovely woman.

I also got to see my sweet friend Tia Ballard a few times! Mads & Hugh didn't arrive until Saturday so I haunted Tia whenever I had a chance on Thursday and Friday when she wasn't too busy. She is just the SWEETEST. So sweet, so lovely, so talented! A really radiant soul. 💖

The rest of the con was just a whirlwind of fun with Fannibal friends! The Hannibal Meat Up went wonderfully, so many folks attended and we had a great time! Various Fannibal groups came and went throughout the hour. Lots of gift exchanges and chatting. Thank you for coming! 💖

Overall, a very fun con, as always! I do hope there will be more opportunities again in the future, and that I will be blessed and lucky enough to partake and see everyone again. ❤️

The Fall 2024 Fanauthor Workshop is a 7-week writing course led by Betts (@bettsfic). The workshop lends a supportive space to writers who identify as fans to receive constructive feedback on fanfiction, original fiction, or creative nonfiction.

Where & When

We meet weekly over Zoom. You can apply for one of two sessions:

Group A: Wednesdays from Oct. 9 - Nov. 20, 12-2pm EST

Group B: Mondays from Oct. 7 - Nov. 18, 6-8pm EST

What

FAW is a feedback-oriented workshop with the occasional generative session. This means that each week we read 2 pieces submitted by participants, offer written feedback, and discuss them over Zoom. You'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your own piece, which can be anything under 6k words.

There may be weeks where, in lieu of workshopping, I present external readings and writing exercises. These sessions will be dependent on the number of participants. For example, if we have 10 participants and 6 workshop weeks, that means one week will be devoted to a reading discussion and generative activity.

I developed a workshop model that focuses mostly on affirmations and positivity, as well as descriptive over prescriptive feedback, which is to say, describing one's experience of reading rather than prescribing solutions to perceived problems. We also present improvement-oriented feedback, but avoid negativity, judgment, and pedantry. Week 1 is spent going over the model and how to give feedback.

About FAW

The first FAW was held in 2017 as an independent study in my MFA. I restarted it in 2022 and since then have led 9 sessions with a total of over 50 participants, about half of whom have participated in the workshop more than once.

Participation in the workshop includes entrance into the FAW community, an active Discord server where we host:

Ongoing accountability meetings, where we chat over Zoom about our projects and set goals for ourselves every other week

A monthly longform writing workshop, where writers can workshop any story between 6k and 100k words

A short story club, where we read and chat about original short form works

Events and activities like movie nights and co-op gaming

Scheduled write-ins and impromptu writing sprints

We also chat about writing and craft, offer resources, and share many, many pet photos.

In addition, participants of the workshop receive:

A one-hour consultation with me to go over your workshop feedback, come up with a plan for revision and/or publication, or anything else you’d like to discuss regarding your writing

Open enrollment in future workshops

Priority sign-ups for WTFS (Write the Fucking Story), WIP Cleanout, and other one-off generative sessions

Eligibility

Anyone over the age of 18 who considers themselves a participant of fandom and who is familiar with fanfiction may apply. A stable internet connection is also required.

Cost

The cost of the workshop is "pay what you can" with the recommended amount of $300. To be as inclusive as possible, I don't want money to be a deterrent for anyone interested in participating.

Payment (or notification of nonpayment) will be requested prior to the start of workshop via PayPal, Venmo, or Wise. You can also pay in installments.

Application requirements

To apply, you will need:

An informal cover letter discussing your fan history and goals as a (fan)writer (more specific instructions on submittable)

A short sample of your writing, either original work or fanfiction. This may be previously published/posted

You can apply via submittable. Applications close September 15.

FAQ

Are there any content restrictions to what I can workshop?

The only restriction is word count (max 6k), with the following caveats:

If you workshop a piece in a form other than prose (for example, a script), your peers may not be able to offer constructive feedback on that aspect of the work. Participants are asked only to have a familiarity with prose.

Content warnings are required for each piece (if applicable), and participants who are uncomfortable reading certain subject matter may abstain from your workshop.

What is the time commitment of the workshop?

As a participant of the workshop, you'll be asked to:

Workshop any piece of your own prose up to 6k words, which will need to be uploaded to the group folder one week before your workshop.

Read 2 pieces per week, write out your individual crit, and attend the workshop itself.

What is the timeline of the workshop?

In week 1, we go over the syllabus and do a writing exercise. Weeks 2 through 7 will be a workshop, a discussion of an external reading, or a writing activity. Prior to the start of workshop, you'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your piece.

Do I have to participate in the Zoom meetings (camera and mic on)?

Attending the workshop itself is required, and everyone is asked to offer at least one note of positive feedback on each piece, so mics are necessary. Cameras are preferred but not required.

You can't asynchronously participate, i.e. read the pieces and offer written feedback without attending the sessions.

Can workshop participants submit to OFIC Magazine?

Yes! Part of the reason I run the workshop is to inspire and promote the original work of fanwriters. You can follow us on tumblr @oficmag.

Who is running the workshop?

@bettsfic! In short, I lived a dreary cubicle life as a banker until I found fanfiction at 24. I loved it so much that I quit my job to get an MFA in creative writing. I loved the MFA so much that I became a writing teacher. I have some publications, awards, an agent, and 2 million words of fic on ao3. I don't have a book out yet but I'm getting there.

Currently I'm a writing coach and freelance editor. I also have a lowkey writing-related newsletter. And I've been answering writing advice asks on my blog for 10 years.

If you want an idea of the kind of writing activities I create, last summer I worked with @books on a workshop series which includes craft essays and some fun prompts.

Alright let’s talk about the fandom. Seriously.

Immaturity and bad takes are impossible to avoid since this is literally a book for pre to post teens, a lot of older people either love or grew up with it, but have left because of the loud majority of minors. This post is mostly for those younger people, so keep that in mind.

I’ll just say this real quick, if you’re 12 and under. Get off, it’s truly for your own safety you shouldn’t even be online, be patient and wait, it will be worth it I promise. Young minds should definitely NOT be interacting with this fandom at all.

These books and the fandom means a lot to me, and to see it on fire breaks my heart, so here I propose some temporary solutions and suggestions:

Draw people’s ocs! No matter how off cannon or op they may be, this fandom is full of children and a little kindness can go a long way

Encourage nuance, I know it’s not our job to parent the kids who are left abandoned on the internet, but I think it’s important to understand where these kids are coming from. Learning is hard for some but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be held accountable for your actions. Differing opinions might be trivial to some who grew up in an echo chamber of the same views as them, so take a mindful approach of sharing new ideas, don’t just say “This idea is correct and because you don’t think it is you’re wrong”.

Positivity and kindness. This one is very important, you need to listen to one another and give everyone a chance to speak, there are so many diverse people across the fandom and we all just want to enjoy our dragons. Ruining the fun by harassing innocent people is not okay, relax a bit and step back, this is all just a series about a fictional species with rules that can be easily bent for fan content, everyone is having fun together, and you can either watch, partake, or ruin it.

I think that’s all I have to say for now, I just love psychology and growing minds are fascinating to me, I love children with all of my heart (not like that) and it’s upsetting to see them fighting with each other or getting dog piled by older people! Please, this fandom has to be way more mindful of it wants to continue, minors in fandoms are unavoidable but you can easily make 16-18+ servers or groups.

With that being said, I genuinely love you all and I wish to see this thrive, continue doing your art, your writing, or whatever the hell you do, I’ve seen so much amazing mixed media projects about these dragons and it makes me so happy that people are sharing this stuff with the world. I love you artists, fellow fandom siblings, and to all else who reads this, have a good day/night 💖

I’m not a trans guy and I feel like it’s not my place to make content about the experience of being a trans man because I myself really have no idea what that’s like. I know people make stories and content all the time from a perspective that they themself have never shared, and it’s very important to see if they’re actually being respectful or not in their work, it’s just a me thing that I try not to do at all.

I just made Shadow pregnant because I appreciate media that touches and explores on pregnancy and how vulnerable that can be for someone even if they’re in a relationship, and idk like it can be so soft and I’m a whore for tooth-rotting fluff idc if it’s cringe I need soft and warm content to get me through the day I’ve already had my fair share of traumatic lore I feel like.
