to illustrate the kind of sewer i am i use child size crayola craft scissors for literally everything from cutting fabric to cutting my threads. i have fancier scissors but i forget to use them. i nearly exclusively use embroidery and tapestry needles when hand sewing cause i inexplicably don’t own any normal needles. i use my stepmothers terrible sewing machine that needs to be rethreaded every time you start a new stitch. i’m a quilter but never cut a good square in my life because i never measure unless i have to. and despite all of this on wednesday i’m starting a college course on industrial sewing and pattern drafting. lord pray for us sinners (self taught sewers) now and at the time of our death (being thrown into the deep end of sewing)

Uncle Tian. The importance that is Uncle Tian. ... With a "cameo" of Yelan in the second half, exactly at 1:00, which is incredibly so very important if you really want to get a proper glimpse into her 'professionally'.
#[ important. important. important. ]#[ he's /so/ important. ]#[ he has so many lines that i'm gonna actually end up replacing numerous of yelan's current tags with because they... ]#[ embody her more than i realized. ]#[ he's such a peaceful man and she's quite a peaceful woman at the heart of herself-- but ruthless in what she does. ]#[ not a 'killing machine' by the way; not by any means. but the thing is; when you look at her-- you might THINK that she is. ]#[ she plays that line so incredibly well and while i'm not one to draw correlations-- ]#[ it really does make me think back to for example wriothesley during the final confrontation in his sq. ]#[ despite his history-- we don't know him as a 'mean' or 'bad' man. but in that moment; you don't know what he wants to do-- ]#[ to dougier. ]#[ and while yelan is different-- it's this reality of; she's explaining zhiyi the risks of essentially playing from both sides. ]#[ but then offers him a deal that either forces him to betray the other side. or at /least/ work with both. ]#[ which is exactly what she warned him against a moment prior. it's insanely dangerous for him; but she doesn't flinch. ]#[ if he gets hurt; from this scene alone-- you don't know whether she'd care or whether the outcome/reward would be worth it. ]#[ but also; every time uncle tian speaks and it's not often; his lines just play so well into how she operates. ]#[ that almost intimidating patience; the ability to just wait. and wait. it's literally like-- god. what video is it in; hold on. ]#[ “a spider doesn't need to be in the center of the web to feel the slightest vibration from each thread.” ]#[ /shakes everyone on the dashboard. ]#[ i hate that my two biggest muses have spider imagery but way differently so. well-- kind of. ]#[ but /this/ level of patience? oof. that's yelan. ]#[ but also-- 0:35. that ost. this version of the ost. help me. save me. ]#[ also yELAN WHAT DID YOU WHISPER TO HIM BY THE END. U G H. ]#[ ooc. ] don't try to make it logical or edit your soul according to the fashion. rather; follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.
Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).
Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:
Tumblr media
Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?
#You're right it's not very satisfying for humanity that the invaders are foiled by a bacteria and not human action! Maybe that's the point!#Maybe it's supposed to be FRIGHTENING and make you ask questions about what humans will do under extreme stress#Not be a morally uplifting tale about Humanity Heroically Defeating the Martians in a Glorious Hollywood Ending#Maybe it's MEANT to be unsatisfying because this is not a straightforward fairytale#I mean I've only read it once and don't know much about Wells' work so I might have misunderstood the point of the book too#But at places it is a very pessimistic view of the human condition and that's partly WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL#That doesn't mean there aren't moments of individual acts of heroism (the Thunderchild for example)#But the question is not just 'how will humanity beat the Martians and prove that we're still the masters of the universe'#Rather 'a) why is humanity so confident that it's ultimately in control of its own destiny#And b) here's lots of scenes of societal collapse and of people pushed to the brink and what would YOU do in those circumstances?#Would YOU feel remorse about silencing the curate even if it did lead to his death?#What if it rather than a foolish adult it had been a small child?#And even if they were weak did they DESERVE it? Yes it might have been necessary but should it be policy going forward?#Would you also be attracted briefly by the certainties that the artilleryman's (rather fascist) plan seems to offer so humanity survives?#But what sort of humanity would that be if it DID survive and is it worth it? The narrator feels he needs to justify the curate's death#The artilleryman would have probably never have thought it was anything OTHER than justifiable or indeed laudable#Under strain and stress would you start to turn against even your loved ones and become brutal?#Is that the only hope for human survival beyond complete surrender? And was the destruction of London maybe even 'cleansing'#In the eugenics sense or in the sense of a natural horror of dirt and germs?#And the vast exodus of six million people fleeing headlong in panic - we might not have seen that exact phenomenon#But didn't the twentieth century subsequently go on to show us unprecedented scale of slaughter and refugee movements and communal strife?#At the end of the day what really separates humanity from other animals? And what separates us from the Martians?#It's not an uncontroversial book- it was written over a hundred years ago for goodness sake and there are questions worth asking#about the way imperialism and arguments about eugenics and population control and all sorts of other dodgy areas operated on Wells' mind#But dear God I really don't think the problem with the book is that 'Humanity didn't save the day!'#Unsatisfying ending? Yes. A FAILURE? No not in my opinion- looks like it was exactly what Wells set out to do#Humanity didn't win the war of the worlds they had a narrow escape and though it might not be martians next time#Why wouldn't disaster return in the future? Sure we've studied their flying machines and even preserved a martian in a jar#But for all our science what have we ACTUALLY learned that will enable us to avert future human catastrophes? Ethically or socially?#Alright rant over- as usual my opinion is not universal nor necessarily well-informed this take just really got my goat

you don't have to pay overdraft fees ever
the biden administration recently cracked down on overdraft fees which means banks cannot force you to pay them as they have become opt-in -- however you do have to call the bank (for example, paypal payments overdraft you even if you have opted out, as they function like checks.)
my experience is with wellsfargo but i imagine that most major banks may operate similarly:
if you have an overdraft fee, call the bank, you will get a machine. go through the autentification process with it but do not mention your issue when it asks you to (specially not the word overdraft -- this is a conspiracy theory i cannot prove but i swear to god they rewire you to more aggressive phone people if you tipoff the machine) instead say "i'd like to speak to a representative" the machine will be like "lol didn't get that" so you may need to repeat it a couple more times before it wires you to a real person
wait! i'd recomend calling as early in the morning as possible to avoid elevator music.
be nice to the customer service person who picks up (i make a point of thanking them for their help and calling them by their name, if i don't catch it the first time i ask them again for it)
my script is something along the lines of: "hi, i noticed there's an overdraft fee in my account that posted on [date]. i am calling to see if we (WE -- you and the representative are a team against the problem) could do something about it" (<- you may decide to be more direct, i just put my innocent hat on)
most if not all of what they say to you is a script. they will be like "i will check that for you with the automated process that takes into account you previous refund activity" BLAH BLAH BLAH. more waiting. if you have had any refunds in the past 12 months, they will be like "sorry the system says no (:" THOUGH, VERY RECENTLY, they have tacked on this question: do you have any thoughts on that / how do you feel about that / etc. though even if they do not prompt you, here's the next step:
say: thank you! i appreciate the automated review, however i do not agree/approve/consent to being charged a fee. is there any way you could check again / anyone else i could talk to / would it be possible to refund it regardless? etc.
they will check again, possibly more waiting, and then you will get an immediate refund! in the rare case they refuse to, here is the link to the FDIC website that you can refer to (note, this is for overdraft fees only):
Tumblr media
8. i cannot emphasize this enough -- be nice !!!!!!!!!!! BE NICE! be cheerful, say "thank you" and "no worries" and "take your time!". it is NOT a confrontation, it is NOT their fault, and most of the time the customer service representative wants this to be as frictionless as possible. they are helping you, use the opportunity to make a moment of their day a lot less stressful than they expect it to be.
that is ALL -- i have been using wellsfargo for over eight years, and have lost hundreds of dollars to predatory overdraft fees charged as a punishment for having no money.
during the beginning covid, when they were momentarily suspended (you had to mention covid on the phone to get them back lol), i came to the realization that all of this time they could have been giving me my money back. there was no reason not to, except corporate greed.
do not let phone social anxiety let them take your money from you, now that it is easier than EVER to get it back. and if you need motivation to pick up the phone, remember this headline from a couple of years back lol:

Statement: Student organizations in the Gaza Strip in solidarity with the Student Intifada in the United States
In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful… We, the students of Gaza, salute the students of Columbia University, Yale University, New York University, Rutgers University, the University of Michigan, and dozens of universities across the United States who are rising up in solidarity with Gaza and to put an end to the Zionist-U.S. genocide against our people in Gaza. As we remain under the bombs of occupation, resisting Nazi genocide, grieving for our martyred colleagues and faculty, and witnessing the destruction of our universities, we welcome the examples of solidarity offered by students facing arrest, police violence, suspension, eviction, and expulsion in order to demand that their universities end their complicity in the Zionist-U.S. genocide and renounce their support for the occupation and the war profiteers that arm it. We have seen hundreds of students arrested across the United States as they work to transform their universities into “Popular Universities for Gaza.” Students, faculty, and staff are disrupting university operations and making clear that while universities in Gaza are being bombed, university business cannot continue as usual in the United States. These actions come as university administrations collaborate with members of Congress to discredit conscientious student activists and faculty, expel students, ban events, shut down student organizations such as Students for Justice in Palestine, and condemn activists working to end the Nazi genocide. At the same time, these same universities invest in the same companies that profit from the continued sale of weapons to the Zionist regime to continue its genocidal offensive. Our students – and our educational system as a whole – in occupied Palestine are subjected to ongoing genocidal aggression: our universities destroyed and bombed, our student organizations banned, and our student leaders subjected to torture, assassination and mass imprisonment. However, in Palestine and around the world, the student movement has always been a driving force of our struggle for liberation. When we see videos and images from American universities today, we are reminded of our history of student struggle as well as the student uprisings of 1968, which challenged imperialism from Vietnam to Palestine and reshaped the face of Europe and the United States. Now, in 2024, the student movement is once again leading the way. From here in Gaza, we see you and salute you. Your actions and activism matter, especially in the heart of the empire, in the United States. As members of Congress agree to provide $26 billion in additional weapons to bomb our people and continue the Zionist-U.S. genocide, you are taking meaningful action to shut down the war machine on your campuses. It is clear that a new generation is rising that will no longer accept Zionism, racism and genocide, and that stands with Palestine and our liberation from the river to the sea. Your global student solidarity is breaking boundaries, and it is time to smash the US imperialist war machine. From Gaza to Columbia, to Ann Arbor and Berkeley, our hands are joined to end Nazi genocide and achieve our collective liberation.

We search for God on this land. Theologically, philosophically, we ask: Where is God when we suffer? How do we explain his silence? But away from philosophy and existential questions. In this land, even God is a victim of oppression, death, the war machine, and colonialism. We see the Son of God on this land crying out the same question on the cross: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why do you let me be tortured? Crucified? God suffers with the people of this land, sharing the same fate with us. As Mitri Al-Raheb wrote in his article “Theology in the Palestinian Context,” which appeared in an Arabic book I edited: “As for the God of this land, he is not like all the gods... His land is plowed with iron... His temples are destroyed by fire ... His people are trampled underfoot, and He does not move a muscle. The God of this earth is hidden from view. You search for His traces but do not see them. You long for Him to split the heavens and come down to see. To listen, to be compassionate, to be saved. The God of this land does not repel brutal armies, but rather shares one fate with his people. His house is demolished. His son is crucified. But his mystery does not perish. Rather, he rises from the ashes, and with the refugees you see him. He walks, and in the dark of the night he raises springs of hope. Without this God, Palestine remains a scorched land ... it remains a field of destruction. But if God tramples its foundations, he will only make it a holy land, a land in whose hills the good news of peace resounds.” Beloved, in these difficult times let us comfort ourselves with God’s presence amid pain, and even amid death, for Jesus is no stranger to pain, arrest, torture, and death. He walks with us in our pain. God is under the rubble in Gaza. He is with the frightened and the refugees. He is in the operating room. This is our consolation. He walks with us through the valley of the shadow of death.

a/n: this spinoff is set in @miinatozakiii’s detective!jihyo x spiderwoman!reader au!!!! her whole series is a work of art!!!
keep your eyes peeled for a small guest appearance ;-)
the constant beeping of the ekg machine and the patient’s soft breathing keeps you engaged, prying in between the layers of open tissue and bone before reaching the designated area that was focused for today’s operation.
“scalpel please.” you command as an aiding nurse hands you the sterile tool, swiftly cutting into the patient’s small outside layer of tissue that was surrounding the brain, checking the monitor above you that reflected the location of the tumor that was protruding just in the back of the patient’s head.
with your steady hands, you carefully place the tongs on the tumor that was roughly about the size of a golf ball, cutting under it very carefully as you waved the sharp blade around the incision area. once you pulled the scalpel away, you slowly take the tongs out of the patient’s open skull area, showing the tumor before placing it in the small tray on your left side, stepping away from the operating table.
“alright, we’re good here. prep the head for stitching.” you say once exiting the room to clean yourself up.
about ten minutes later, you and your assisting operating nurse sohee walked out to the waiting room where the patient’s family was sitting, all of them collectively standing up, waiting to hear the news. while that was happening, cristina, your best friend, pops her head out of the front desk, watching you shake hands and exchange hugs, delivering the good news, reading your lips while you give the assurance that the patient will be in recovery right away and they’ll see them very soon.
you tell sohee to take a break before being paged again, eying cristina from the desk, walking toward her as she whips her hand out in front of you, reciprocating her energy as you gave her a high five.
“so i suppose the craniotomy went well as expected?”
“i would’ve done that with my eyes closed, but yes. the tumor was actually bigger than anticipated.”
cristina was left in a small surprise, walking through the long concourses of the hospital. it was practically second nature to be in this fast-paced environment with the route back to your office was just a simple walk down the hallway and to the left, take the elevator up to the 32nd floor, and the door to your office will be two doors down from the right.
“so how’d that blind date go two days ago?” you ask cristina, back still turned as she was right in tow with you.
“god, never again. she was a complete nutjob.”
“oh how so?”
“didn’t have the basic manners for a fancy restaurant, didn’t want to take no for an answer. she insisted on paying the bill but i played it safe and paid my half of it.”
you seeth air out of your teeth at the calculated defensive play that cristina did as you two enter the elevator.
“something tells me that you’re being set up with the wrong people.” you say, pressing away lightly  on the buttons of the elevator panel, automatically going up after a few short seconds. “soojin was never really a good matchmaker for you to rely on, actually never was since med school.”
“you think y/n?” cristina retorts at you, “thanks for stating the obvious enola holmes.”
“hey! i finished both movies this past weekend. really great, don’t think i’d be a sherlock however.”
“you’d definitely would and i can prove that to you.” cristina says as you reach the floor of your office, briskly walking to the door, opening it wide enough for cristina to follow shortly after. you then walk to your desk, you snap your fingers as cristina is caught off guard by your cloak of levitation closing the door behind her, placing a hand on her chest in shock as the cloak moves around the room.
“i swear i told you to have a coat hanger for that thing.”
“not a thing.” you shoot out, pointing a finger as she sees you sit at your desk reviewing some of the paperwork that was left before your midday operation.
“say, are you doing anything saturday?” you ask, not paying attention to her while signing through certain lines of the files as cristina sits down on one of the couches as she notices the cloak holding up a kettle of water and cup, offering to her as she takes the cup.
“not at all y/n.” cristina replies as she sips the water easily. “why do you ask?”
“i got courtside tickets for the knicks game next tuesday and i cleared my schedule so-”
you get interrupted with the phone beeping as you put down your pen to answer the pager, clearing your throat before answering.
“what’s up jungwon?”
“hey y/n!” your young secretary answered with a bright tone in his voice. “i have doctor west here at the front desk with me saying that she needs to see you. she has some envelopes in hand with your names on it.”
“ah that must be the mail then, send her up!” you reply heartily as cristina breaks her head down, stifling a laugh at your antic.
“i can’t believe you made west your errand girl.”
“she lost a bet with me, so this was the punishment that she had to do.” you say with a cracking smile on your face. “i actually hope she does this forever really.”
the door opens again with doctor west walking in with a smug look on her face, “har har very funny l/n.” she says to you as she hands you the small set of envelopes for you to look through. “i was off by ten points on that basketball game bet, but with you being the sports analyst you are, of course you’d be on the dot with it.”
“i won fair and square.” you firmly say, “want an espresso before you head down?” you ask as the floating cloak hovers over the machine waiting for her answer.
“i’m good y/n but thank you though.” west replies as she makes her way to the door, “oh there was this old fashioned envelope with a fancy seal on it.” west says with a finger pointed up like an idea popped up in her head.”it looked pretty important to me so i put it in the middle of the pile.”
“why would you put the most important one in the middle when it should be on top?” you ask, shifting through the stack as you see the envelope that west was talking about, flipping it over as it had very fancy writing on the front that was written to you before looking at the red seal that was keeping it closed.
“what is that?” cristina asks as she looks over to you again.
“a very old envelope, but i think it's what’s inside that matters.” you reply breaking the red seal, opening up the envelope to pull a slip of paper that had a ticket inside along with a note.
“it’s an invitation.”
“to where?”
“a special evening gala at the myoui residence, tonight.”
“the myoui’s?” doctor west asks with confusion in her voice. walking back to you to show the small lettered paper as she was left in surprise. your cloak of levitation floating behind you as it also looked like it wanted a look at the paper, you waved your hand away at it as it went back in the corner.
“what does the invitation say y/n?” cristina asks you, organizing the rest of the unopened envelopes to the left side of your desk before putting your attention back to the paper you were holding.
“it says: you are cordially invited for the celebration of akira myoui’s seventy-fifth birthday. there will be a special hearing from the celebrant himself as well as reception following after with provided refreshments. please dress in black attire accordingly and the ticket you received in the envelope will be your entry into the residence.”
cristina and west were left in shock that you were given such an invitation as the realization hits her like a truck.
“wait! this is the same akira myoui that you had to do emergency brain surgery on that one graveyard shift?”
you nod at the exposition clearly and remember the urgency of the situation. luckily you did save his life after they brought him in what was a sudden aneurysm to his brain. it was clockwork for you as the operation went swiftly for about four hours. you recall informing the mother, daughter, and his visiting brother after and they were able to leave after a few days of close monitoring to make sure that there weren't any complications.
“what’s so special about the myoui family?” doctor west asks as she takes a seat on the couch set on the opposite side of cristina.
“they’re the most esteemed family in all of new york, kind of like uncrowned royalty given that mr. myoui was one of the pioneering businessmen that put wall street on the map.” you answer as doctor west scratched her head at the new information gained. “consider them to be the japanese version of the beckham family.”
“an event hosted by the myoui family like this is way more prestigious than common pop culture gatherings. this is fifty times bigger than the met gala or the oscars.” cristina adds on snapping your fingers again to get a levitating cup of espresso handed to you.
“frankly enough if it weren’t for me, mr myoui wouldn’t have been alive today.” you say taking a quick sip down the last bits of your espresso before waving off the cup to float back to its original place.
“well congrats on getting the invite y/n.” doctor west says to you as she heads out the door of your office for real this time. “don’t forget to take pictures of their mansion for me, will ya? i’m helping my little sister with her architectural project so a little inspo would be nice.”
you wave doctor west off with a thumbs up as you reach for the slip of paper that was addressed to you before looking at the opened envelope that it came in. the paper was aged and ragged, you could feel the years behind your fingertips slowly grazing the cracked seal, looking at the image of the elegant swan that was used as a stamp.
“so you are going right?” cristina asks you as she leans back on the couch to relax for a bit before heading back downstairs to work.
“well i have to.” you reply lowly, “i saved the man’s life, in a way he’s indebted so by inviting me is one action of his thankfulness for the years of work i dedicated most of my life to in order to help others.”
being a sorcerer of the mystic arts was one thing, but somehow it felt wrong to be one place than the other. you tried your best to be in the sanctum and the hospital but you know that it’ll eventually come down to leaving one thing behind. you didn’t get to that fork in the road yet but it was going to be soon.
you fold the paper up and place it in the center of your desk, clap your hands together twice, getting cristina’s attention, grabbing the empty cup from her and setting it on the coffee table.
“we should go downstairs before the pager reaches my office again. not a fun time the last time they did that.” you say as cristina cracks a laugh at the memory you mentioned, closing the door behind you as you made your way down to the hospital floors.
a couple hours later after you left work early and you were walking around your decked out high-rise apartment, lightly cleaning around before you had to get ready for the gala event.
to say that you’ve done well for yourself (frankly quoted by your parents to add,) would be hell of an understatement. the apartment was minimal and spacious, but it reflected your lifestyle and personality so well with all of the trinkets and nicknacks you’ve spoiled yourself with within your 5 years of being a neurosurgeon. the list of flashy toys and items only grew and hell you had a rare grand piano sitting in your dining room that was auctioned off with the description which was claimed to be the same piano that elton john had on his farewell tour, along with three of the rarest hypercars just sitting in your garage waiting to be taken on a joyride again.
you open one of the units in your walk in closet after showering, browsing through any possible outfits to wear with two options; the first one being a sleek satin textured dress that would flaunt off your figure in all the right curves and places—if you wanted to attract attention to yourself, this would be the outfit to wear.
the other one however was more on the subtle, lowkey side as it was a simple suit, but the jacket was tailored to a super cropped fit that would expose your midriff, not that you had a problem with showing a little hint of your abs since you kept yourself in shape regularly. giving the suit a longing look, you nodded at the thought of the suit on your body and pulled it out of the closet closing the door right after.
once you got all of the necessary chains and jewelry you thought would look good with the suit, you walk up to the glass case of all of your degrees and accolades, pulling the drawer below to reveal a plethora of watches rotating in different cycles to ensure that the inner gears would be operating properly. you hovered your finger over the different watches that would be worth almost a third of your paycheck as you picked out a sleek rolex out of the drawer, pressing the knob to ensure that it was working, and pushed the drawer back and slipped the watch on your wrist while walking out of the apartment.
even though you had only seen pictures of the myoui family’s estate, you couldn’t help but get lost in the intricate designs that they had for the house when you arrived. architectural digest would have a field day in covering the estate if the family wasn’t very closed off to the public, but that was also the beauty of it too—it gave a mysterious vibe to everyone that has ever seen or written about this famous family and nobody knew what was happening behind closed doors.
the outside pavilion of the estate was riddled with vines growing on the sides of the front door, exiting your lambo, adjusting your necklace and jacket before handing the keys to the valet worker nodding as he watched in awe as you went up the stairs to the front entrance where they were checking every attendee inside.
the process was quick and smooth, following along the flow of the crowd, scanning and observing the walls plus the high arches in the interior before approaching the main hall.
you were no stranger to gatherings, observing many of the people conversing with one another in the various standard and standing tables spread across the room, proceeded to walk forward. people steal quick glances at you walking past them, immediately recognizing who you were as the sudden exchange of words turn into quick murmurs—no surprise as word does travel fast when you have a powerpoint presentation of awards and achievements.
as people try not to freak out at the sight of you and your appearance, you give a small smile nodding to the multitude of eyes staring, walking forward past the occupied tables. you then get stopped by various individuals that actually turned out to be colleagues you’ve met at previous events, breaking the ice and catching up on what’s been happening since that last time you and them have met.
it’s refreshing and nice that you don't have to keep your mouth shut since you usually speak at these events or conferences, but then your eyes wander to a certain person, well technically, a big guy who was about 6’4 who stood out a little more than needed. either way, you flash a goofy smile blurting a fast excuse to remove yourself from the conversation that you were in.
you walk your way through the idle crowd as you approach the man, his back faced towards you. getting  stopped by one of the waiters who was plating out simple pastries to the table, looking back at the man’s broad shoulders, the hair on the back of his head looking more familiar, instantly remembering who the person was.
“chief!” you yell out, getting his attention as he flashes a smile that matches yours, walking towards you arms open as he draws you in for a long embracing hug.
“ahh y/n!” the chief cries out with joy, his hands nearly taking up the entire space on your back, patting his shoulders and moving your body side to side as he pulls away after a few seconds.
“it’s so good to see you!”
“even better to see you again!” the chief replies, “god, how long has it been since we last saw each other?”
“about 6 years, no?” you ask as the chief places his fingers on his head, rubbing his temple at how long it had been. you and the chief had quite the history together; the both of you met back at the hospital during your internship at the time for med school when the chief’s best friend in the force at the time was rushed in after a case that went south. you were an assisting nurse at the time but luckily the surgery went well for him to make a full recovery.
you were the one to actually break the news to the chief after the long operation and you remember the faint memory of him shaking your hand, thanking profusely of the work that you and the other nurses did to save his friend’s life. since then, you and the chief kept in touch—mostly by events like these and you were even invited to some of his birthday parties. he was a good colleague, an inspirational person with the considerable amount of work he’s done for the police, but above all that, you were happy to have the chief as a close friend.
“what you been up to lately?” the chief asks you while adjusting your rolex.
you sighed out playfully at the doting question, “nothing much actually, it’s been nice down at the hospital.”
the chief nods with pouted lips as he scans the crowd for anything out of the ordinary, still letting his policeman demeanor take over him.
“you’ve kept yourself busy, i heard about the whole lizard debacle when it happened two weeks ago.” you say, angling your head off to the right as the chief nods his head at the memory.
“yeah, that was something.”
“word on the street is saying that you were actually tied up with we-”
“zip it l/n, i already got made fun of with that from the other detectives back at the precinct.” he says coldly, “i don’t need to hear it from you.”
you raise your eyebrows at the chief’s tone, taken aback at the sudden change of attitude. a second of tension hangs in the air before the chief bursts out laughing at his little prank.
“sorry, but it was a pain in the ass to get all of those webs off of me and the car.”
you scoff at the chief, looking out to the crowd of people that were still coming in from the main door of the hall. this was some gathering it had to be, diverting your attention back to the buff man standing in front of you.
“are you by yourself or?” you ask the chief again to keep the conversation going.
“thankfully i’m not. i brought company with me for tonight, had to take some convincing though.” the chief replies before turning his head around to get someone’s attention, “park!”
you lean your head to the chief’s left side as you see a woman approach you with a second person in tow right behind her.
the first person that the chief called over looked to be about 5’3 in comparison to your 5’9 height and a clear difference compared to the chief’s frame. you take notice of her high cheekbones, her eyebrows looked recently threaded, skin complexion looking clearly divine, she had a beauty mark that slightly stuck out on the tip of her nose, and her hair was wavy flipped over to the right side of her dress.
“y/n, this is detective park jihyo. my right hand woman and one of my best and brightest in the force.” the chief informs with a hand out towards the detective, jihyo sticking her hand out. you politely obliged with a firm handshake.
“pleasure to meet you jihyo.” you say with a smile.
“likewise y/n, i’ve heard a little bit about you already.”
“that so? well if it’s from the chief’s mouth then it’s probably not true.”
the three of you share a quick laugh as the chief scrunches his face at your joke. soon after that, the second person that was behind jihyo finally merged into the small circle.
the second person was roughly about your height, she wore a velvet red dress that complimented all of the curves on her body nicely. her frame was much similar to the chief’s given the amount of muscle that was peeping through. her face felt too fake to be real, but it was all natural the way it contoured with the slightly darker skin compared to the chief’s. you got lost for a second as the person across from you stared back before the chief broke the silence yet again.
“i haven’t actually introduced you to her yet, but y/n this is my niece.” your face lights up in awe at the new piece of information given, playing along with the act since you already know who she actually was, but the chief didn’t know this, and hopefully you can keep it that way.
“i was about to say that you look very familiar with the chief.” you say to the chief’s niece, locking eyes with her, hands still shaking together. “did he have to drag you here since you couldn’t stay at home?”
the chief’s niece laughs lightly, retracting back with arms crossed, pushing a strand of hair away from her face before answering.
“i’m not really a fan of events like these, but hey, free food!” she exclaimed with open hands, simply nodding at her substantiated reason as the chief glances at the three of you.
“attention everyone, please start taking your seats. the event will be starting in approximately five minutes.” you hear the announcer say on the speakers as everyone starts to settle down, scrambling for open seats around the hall.
“well then, you girls can get acquainted while i find us a table.” the chief exclaims out, clasping his hands together before leaving the small circle that was now consisting of the three of you.
“i suppose we should follow him then while we do that.” jihyo says as she follows the chief’s pathway. you nodded at the plan that the chief started as the chief’s niece started to walk behind jihyo before you stopped her for a quick second to whisper something in her ear.
“didn’t think that you’d be here too, spiderwoman.”
the chief’s niece gawks her head as you smile at the mischievous message you just uttered, rolling her eyes at you, playing along with your little antic.
“very funny magic doctor, but hopefully nothing goes wrong tonight.” she replies, “it’s my day off anyway.”
you pat her shoulder as she continues to walk after jihyo, reaching for her hand as she naturally joins hers without jihyo looking. you didn’t think anything of it, but they did look good together, tracking behind her to the table that was a little bit off to the side of the main dance floor.
sitting next to the chief at the table, the light’s dimmed down a bit as the emcee for tonight stood center stage with the microphone and a paper in his hands.
“ladies and gentlemen, i would like to thank all of you who came tonight for this special occasion. tonight we are celebrating the man who has given everything for this city. one who has sacrificed a lot to build the life that he has made, if it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be standing here tonight in this hall together. he is loved by all with his good graces, so without further ado, please welcome akira myoui and his lovely family!”
the crowd parted like moses with the red sea as the myoui family finally took center stage. greeting the various guests along the way as they walked to the dance floor. the hall erupted with endless applause, setting your eyes on the family clapping along too.
mr. myoui looks to be in healthy shape on the small stage, impressed that for his age that he’s still standing tall with a bright smile across his face as he repeatedly bowed to the audience, thanking them. his wife was also clapping along next to him, almost shedding tears as she tried to wipe her face while clapping.
switching glances from mrs. myoui to their daughter, you’ve only seen her once and that was back at the hospital after the operation, she was very quiet and timid, didn’t really speak much in that first encounter but that was more than a couple years ago compared to now.
myoui mina was it? you try to remember. wait, that can’t be mina now right!?
mina stood aside her parents wearing a one piece dress with the bottom half being flared out to give more breathing room for her legs. her heels were clunky and simple, but she pulled it off so well. you couldn’t help but stare at the elegance that she was emitting just by doing absolutely nothing. refusing to draw your eyes away from her as you become slack jawed.
you could see why she was considered to be the myoui family’s black swan. she was the sole example of beauty perfected on a person. the way her face is outlined in the lighting, making her jawline unreal to look at. her lips were simple but fitting on her, her hair tied in a high ponytail with the ends hanging loosely. you see her turn towards her parents and you notice that the back of her dress was completely exposed, leaving you almost salivating at how flawlessly sculpted and toned her back was.
before you could indulge in eye-fucking her more at a distance, you break your trance, ears picking up the sound of chairs squeaking on the glossy floor as the guests started to take their seats. placing your hand over your mouth, you try your hardest to get that image of mina out of your head before you try to keep yourself occupied by engaging in conversations with jihyo and the chief’s niece for the next couple of minutes before you hear someone tap a couple times on the microphone.
everyone’s attention turns back to the stage as akira myoui holds the microphone proudly, getting a few more applause before he holds a hand up to quiet down the slightly rowdy crowd.
“please please!” he starts off saying, quieting the crowd more as the sound of hands start to dissipate.
“i’d like to keep this speech short as much as possible, but knowing myself, i’ll probably get off track with my three second memory span like a goldfish.”
the audience breaks out in a small laughter as mr. myoui cheekily smiles, tensing his shoulders up as a few ‘woops’ are heard scattered in the crowd.
you couldn’t help but have a sense of content watching your former patient stand in front of you feeling never more alive than he already is. you considered it to be just a small accomplishment that you didn’t realize at the time but it would be a major contribution to his long life as the event you were in was just living proof that he will always be standing despite the many adversities thrown at him.
“i’d like to have everyone take a seat. i’m going to indulge you all with a little story of mine.”
it was going to be a long night indeed, but you didn’t mind the speech taking eons to finish as you were moved by the words of wisdom that was filling your ears with so much knowledge.
the speech felt like a seminar speaking back in your college days, but nobody complained because everyone in the room was captivated by mr. myoui’s view on his life with the whole grand hall exploding in cheers as mr. myoui thanked the crowd for listening as he bowed to close the momentous moment.
soon after, about fifteen minutes later, the dance floor was opened for anyone willing to partake as the open area was filled with the lively music played by the lively band.
you weren’t big on dancing, but if someone were to be playing 80’s classics, it would be a different discussion. for the most part, you stood off to the side behind a couple tables conversing with other doctors from a neighboring hospital just a few blocks away from yours.
soobin and sunghoon were your lab partners back in college and they both were practicing physical therapists in contrast to your dabbling with poking inside people’s brains. the three of you were sharing a quick laugh about a college memory with soobin getting absolutely hammered on the week of finals midweek before showing up the next day with no sign of a hangover from his face whatsoever. when you asked him after class he just simply said to you that he had his ways.
nearly laughing your ass off, you catch your breath before speaking again—suddenly you hear a cry for help on the dance floor, turning around in less than a millisecond to see what was happening. at the last second you see the head of a girl dip in your line of vision behind the figure of a man, you didn’t think of it since it might be one of the other guests before your ear hears the name of the woman that fell.
“miss mina are you alright?”
you turn back to see the man attempt to pick up mina, screaming slightly again as you start to make your way closer to the incident.
“get away from me!”
“aw don’t be like that, i thought we were having a moment.” the man says while you stood your ground between the two of them, seeing mina on the floor and the man on one knee with his hand floating next to her right cheek.
without a second thought, you grab the many by his shoulders and tossed him back causing the man to get agitated towards you now.
“hey what the hell?!”
“back away from her, she’s clearly uncomfortable.” irritation clearly rising in your tone as the man simply just scoffed at your action.
“c’mon now, her and i were just having a friendly conversation.” the man replies taking two steps forward, only to be shoved back by you again now getting annoyed with your persistence.
“i can see through your blatant lie you pretentious disgusting fuck.” you harshly say, anger now reaching to your hands as they balled up into fists.
“who do you think you are-”
“what’s going on here?”
the three of you are  approached by one of the security guard members with the chief trailing behind to see what was happening.
“someone tried to get a little frisky with myouis’s daughter, but he’s trying to play it off cooly.” you say, pointing to the man standing across giving a disgusting look at you while the guard and chief both look towards the man.
“she’s just making it all up, it’s a lie.”
“then how come mina’s on the floor hmm? care to explain that?”
the man parts his mouth open, tongue caught in his throat as he hangs his head in shame, admitting that he was in the wrong as the surrounding guests watching the altercation gasped in detestation at what they just heard.
“get this guy out of here, what a disgrace from a high working member of society.”
the man was then being escorted away by the security guard and the chief, you then tend to mina’s care who was still on the floor, sitting upright as you got down on one knee to see her condition.
“sorry about all of that, was he troubling you?”
mina shakes her head while you put your hand out to help her up, “a little, he was eying me for a majority of the party so i have to thank you for stepping in.”
once level with you standing, you brush your hands down your blazer before looking back up to mina, not realizing that you were observing her features a lot more closely now compared to earlier, eyes trailing her face as mina tilts her head in curiosity realizing that you were staring for a little bit too long.
mina was about to say something to you, fake coughing in front of her to cover the embarrassment of you glancing at her before you gathered your thoughts in less than 0.9 nanoseconds.
“i believe we met once before, but i’ll introduce myself again.” you begin saying, “i’m y/n, well, doctor l/n since i helped save your father’s life a long while back.”
“i remember, it’s nice to see you again, y/n.” mina responds politely, putting a soft smile that makes you keel over in your head, taking her hand, kissing it as a sign of respect that made mina blush lightly at the feudal act.
to step away from the crowd, you follow mina around the endless pathways in the mansion before stopping to opena set of doors leading into the library study. you were left appalled at the towering bookcases that stretched across the room once the lights lit up the darkened place.
“i’ve only seen pictures of this place, it’s amazing to finally see it in person.” you say, jogging lightly to catch up beside mina as softly laughs at you acting like a little kid.
“we don’t normally show what we have inside our estate, but it’s always good to receive compliments like yours every now and then when we have events like these.” mina replies, walking along a bookcase trailing her fingers across the spines of books that have been sitting there for years. some probably touched while the rest were just simply collecting dust.
you leaned against the handrail as you continued to watch mina, everything that she did was with a sense of elegance. the way she rolls her feet on and off the floor almost as if she was gliding on air, crossing your arms with a thought running in your head that you just can’t seem to get out of.
“it’s nice to see you’ve done well for yourself doctor.” mina begins again, turning her gaze back to you with a sly grin tugging on her face that would’ve sent a punch to your stomach the way she was looking. “you’ve put yourself miles ahead with your reputation for health.”
“what makes you say that?” you say hiding a frown reluctantly accepting the curveball compliment.
“there’s something with you y/n, behind those years and years of medical experience that i just want to know about.” she says as she opens a panel that leads to the outside balcony, looking at you flashing a subtle nod at the offer to go outside with her.
“what is it that you like to know? i’m an open book.”
mina hums as she stands overlooking the garden of the family estate below before facing square with you.
“cocktails or charcuterie?”
“nice to have an appetizer before delving into a little bit of concoctions.”
“interesting take.” mina says, pinching her bottom lip before releasing a gummy smile. you smirk at the sight while looking down from the simple yet unique question.
“is it true that you have two PHD’s?”
“got them both simultaneously after medical school.”
mina is taken aback by this trivial piece of information as she tries to think of more questions to break your icy wall of knowledge.
“favorite movie of all time?”
you snort at the sudden simple question as mina bursts trying to compose herself too. “you’re kidding right? there’s no way you ask me that after two questions.” you tease as mina tries to control her laugh at the randomness she just did in front of you, gazing softly at the state—you wish to see her like this around you more often.
“you still have to answer.” mina finally says once finished.
“oppenheimer and interstellar, absolute masterpieces of works.”
mina then turns around to stare at the city skyline, the jungle of skyscrapers and the faint sound of cars on the streets frantically beeping their way around as you stand next to her again, indulging in the same view, letting the cool breeze flow past your bodies.
“did you ever think you would be helping people anywhere else besides here?” mina asks you and you perk your head up at the question.
“not really, this city has been my home for as long as i can remember.”
“even if you wanted to work overseas?”
you shake your head, “i think keeping myself here is a huge favor. i can’t imagine what it’ll be like for your father if i wasn’t here to save him.”
mina’s head dips at the thought before looking at you again with the same soft smile she’s been giving you this whole night.
“i wanted to thank you again for earlier, you looked pretty alluring when you stood up to the creep back in the hall.”
“i also have something.” you say, “you looked extremely dashing when you were on stage. i simply couldn’t take my eyes off of you.”
silence fills the air as mina hears your sudden expression that makes her heart dance leaving her flustered.
“didn’t think that it would be you of all people to tell me that i was beautiful or pretty, doctor.”
your face warms up at your foregoing words, as run your hand through the back of your head, trying to keep yourself cool, getting a motivation to double down your efforts.
“well consider me to be the first doctor to tell you that you’re amazingly striking mina.”
“nothing new with us high class members being bewitched by each other after they just met.” mina says as she leans a little closer to you, lightly placing your fingers on her chin with the both of you staring at each other's lips, allowing the gravity between you two do it's work before you feel a buzz in your pocket.
turning away at the last second as mina stops her movements while you grab your phone from your pocket, letting out a small whine of annoyance through your nose as you see the caller id on your screen.
“sorry mina, i have to take this.” you say as mina shakes her head again and with a hand up while you went back inside to answer the phone. with the phone in your ear you tried to see if your phone was glitching out, noticing the flashing lights outside the paned window—fireworks as the light bursting through with a hint of red color. curious to see if anything was weird, you immediately ignore that thought once the sparking lights along with the red color fading away went back outside to check on mina.
popping your head, you see mina stand there now in the same position as she once was, overlooking the city as you walked back to her, tapping her shoulder which startled her for a second.
“you okay? i saw some fireworks go off.” you ask her as mina hums softly while nodding.
“just taking in the view y/n that’s all.”
“we should head back inside, i think we’ve been here for a little bit longer than expected.”
mina agrees as she turns around, leaning forward from on the stone handrail as you take her hand with yours, leading her back inside and into the ballroom.
you and mina return back to the ballroom arms linked together. the music played by the band was still considerably loud while people in the crowd began murmuring again at the sight of you and mina walking in together instinctively giving small nods around before reaching mina’s parents who greeted you happily.
“y/n!” you hear mr. myoui’s voice over the loud music as you and mina turn your attention to him approaching you, unlinking arms to fix your appearance to make yourself more presentable, flashing a hand out for him to shake.
“great to see you still walking mr. myoui!” you exclaim excitedly as mr. myoui takes your hand, bringing you in for a hug as you and him groan out in bright remarks.
“how are you doing?”
“i’ve never felt more alive!”
“that’s good to know. my door is always open for you at my office if you ever want to chat again.” you say as mr and mrs. myoui laugh at the generous offer for your former patient’s wellbeing.
“thank you for stepping into that incident with my daughter earlier, i thought shindong knew better but knowing his dragging of women back at his workplace it seems that he never leaned from his mistakes.”
“i apologize for causing a scene at your party.” you say, placing a hand on your chest and bowing slightly out of respect.
“not at all! you actually did a good deed protecting my daughter mina.” mr. myoui replies, “consider that to be your second good act you’ve done for us.”
“gladly sir, thank you as always.”
“attention everyone, will mr. amd mrs. myoui take to the center of the dance floor for their special dance segment.?” you hear the emcee announce abruptly as the stage light beams down towards you and the myoui’s.
gasps and whoops were heard as they started to make their way past you to the dance floor, letting them pass by you and mina, watching them as the band started playing something slow. a fitting moment once mr. and mrs. myoui held each other lovingly.
a subtle song choice as the band played a cover of a jazzy tune of mr. blue by the fleetwoods. it was also understandable that this was the song that was playing when mr and mrs. myoui first met each other so long ago.
when the song had ended, the crowd applauded the lovely couple as more and more people took to the floor to embark on their own slow dancing. the lights dimmed just a bit as the band started setting the mood with more jazzy tunes. you scan the crowd and see the chief with a pretty lady walking across your line of vision, jihyo and the chief’s niece followed suit not long after too.
you stood there in the crowd of moving people as you contemplated on whether to stand off to the side—but it wasn’t gonna be like that just for tonight. you finally decided it would be fine to let loose a little bit to breakaway from the stress back at the hospital.
mina sits at a nearby table not too far from the dance floor, reaching for a glass of water to drink when she recalls the sudden red light she was staring at on the outside of the balcony. it felt strange—entrancing like the gods from above had sent her a message—a throbbing headache pounds her head as she tries to fight it off with tightly closed eyes. flashes of images pooling in her head of people screaming, a shadow striking down another person, and an eerie hissing sound followed by a low growl before opening her eyes again.
she feels a hand on her shoulder, looking up to meet your worried gaze along your hunched posture. you notice a hint of red lightly fading away from her eyes leaving you puzzled, but you thought nothing of it as you kneeled next to mina on the chair.
“everything okay?”
“yeah, i just had a brain freeze from the cold water.”
you let out a soft sigh followed by a smile, standing up to turn your attention towards the dance floor for a quick second before returning your look back to mina, extending a hand to her with the lights shining behind you, emulating the same aura that mr. myoui had with mrs. myoui just earlier.
“care to dance with me?”
this evening had its fair share of twists and turns, but this was easily the best highlight of the night—dancing with a literal icon of the high class with mina with the both of you weaving past the people on the floor to reach the center.
your hands seamlessly find their way to mina’s waist as her’s are neatly wrapped around your neck, the flow of music moving your bodies as you hold her hand out to the side.
it’s like you had a spell activated to turn yourself invisible as everything around you started turning blurry, the only thing that was in your vision was mina—something about her with you just made her 10 times more ethereal with the ambience of the band playing a slow song, the lights nearly off in the hall with the nightlight effect emitting from the hanging chandelier’s.
something about the band playing a dean martin cover, it awoke a version of you that was rowdy with love. mina was just getting lost in the music, breaking her vibe by pulling her closer to you. you already noticed earlier but your outfit and hers really complimented each other nicely. all of the big designer companies should take notes with the contrasting angles that your suit and mina’s dress fit on your bodies.
the space between you two was now just within a few inches of each other, mina’s hand now at your chest as your hand was still on the small of her back—a lot more closer with meeting eyes again—the same tempting pupils that were seen back on the balcony with the air around now thickening rigidly.
“say…what were you going to do when we were together back on the roof?” mina asks you with her voice above a small tone.
“when my fingers were on your chin and when you were staring at my lips?” you mumble, earning a sigh coming out of mina’s parted lips.
you then do the same motion with your fingers like earlier, mina leaning closer again, but this time the distance was just mere centimeters at this point.
“what’s your diagnosis of this we’re doing y/n?” mina whispers to you, tilting her head slightly, the desire pulling the string more and more by the second.
“how bout we just-” you cut yourself off by mirroring the same actions with mina and before you could have any second thoughts, her lips met yours.
staring at her lips earlier was one thing, but feeling them was a completely different thing. they were just as plump and soft as they looked. mina’s fingers sliding on your cheek with you pulling her closer. luckily the room was dark enough for no one else to notice, you didn’t care about the repercussions that might follow if someone noticed—you were always about living life on the edge every now and then. kissing the myoui family’s black swan was no different.
mina pulls away for a quick second, the music still ringing through your ears as she pecks you again with a slight urge than before, catching her breath again as you meet her half-lidded eyes. but before you two could continue once more, there was something out of place.
her eyes glowed red again.
you pull her for another quick kiss as mina slides her arm under yours, you still place your hand on her face, fingers getting tangled with your hair before you hear a faint hiss come out of mina.
opening your eyes to see what was happening, mina slid down from kissing your face down to your neck, tickling your pulse point as you gasped out in a slight surprise. she then hissed again when she pulled herself away, diving back into your neck, but you then felt a sharp pain suddenly—pushing mina away from you when another hiss was heard from her, turning into a growl as she gnawed on your neck one more time, properly leaving a mark with the guests surrounding you two started to take notice of what happened.
the music abruptly stopped and the lights flickered back on again. murmurs from the crowd only increased while you felt your neck from the sudden pain that it received, noticing your fingers were laced with drops of your blood. the pain soon kicked in as more and more party guests took steps back.
your head was spinning and your vision was getting blurrier. you staggered for a bit as mina watched you stumble down on the floor, fading into unconsciousness. the last thing that you noticed passing out was that mina had fangs coming out of her teeth.
screams from the guests could be heard as your vision had completely faded into blackness.

It’s not super common, but sometimes a pilot falls in action while their HAK remains operable. In events like this, commanding officers will usually order a new pilot to be assigned to the chassis - and the Doors pity the poor fool who gets the charge.
We’re not entirely sure how, but HAKs frequently store a backlog of sorts of their previous pilot’s brain patterns. When a new operator is introduced to the unit… well, it’s absurd but I reckon the HAK doesn’t like it. That’s the best way I can describe it; these machines have a preference for their old pilot, and they need to make sure everything is as close to “normal” as possible.
It starts with the pilot reporting hearing voices. Usually they’re helpful, they give the pilot advice in battle situations and whatnot. I remember one kid, must’ve been no older than 24, who swore she’d heard someone whisper to her to dodge a missile she had no clue was coming.
Our scientists say that they’re“false memory hallucinations” but the pilots call em “family”. But these aren’t some helpful sprites; and that ain’t the end either.
Secondhand pilots start to lose track of things. Sometimes they report feelings of dissociation; legs too long, faces too thin. Some pilots start to feel something like gender dysphoria, others get paranoid or anxious where they previously were fine. They experience dysmorphia so extreme that many attempt to modify their bodies to satisfy the mech’s desires. They all start to forget their names - instead, they demand to be called by the same sign as the previous operator for their HAK.
At the same time, their piloting skills increase. They pull maneuvers they’ve never even tried before, and all secondhand pilots have at least a 250% mission success rate. Probably why the higher-ups still keep reassigning pilots like this; it’s just too lucrative to have an operator with twice as much experience.
We have three of these pilots in our division. They’re freaky - even more so than regular HAK operators. They have scars on their hands and legs from where they tried to adjust their lengths, and they move uncannily, like some alien creature infesting a human shell.
There’s a rumor that they’re experimenting with subsequent iterations of inheritance, seein how many souls they can cram into one body I guess. God only knows what that’ll be like.

So, about this whole "AI" thing...
A response to an ask (for some reason, tumblr won't let me blaze normal responsicles)
Tumblr media
Like the Titan, Prometheus, Man Has Stolen Fire From the Gods. We can now make minds in our own image, elevating crude matter to the level of self-awareness. So... What next?
Tumblr media
The first thing I would like to make clear is that, in some respects, my opinion here is irrelevant. So is yours. So are the opinions of the people reading this.
No matter what we do, no matter what we believe, something remains inviolably clear and true:
BAD ACTORS WILL EXPLOIT GENUINELY USEFUL TECHNOLOGIES TO BENEFIT THEMSELVES
This is an axiom of human behaviour that cannot be escaped. Nuclear power is amongst the most regulated technologies that have ever existed... and right now, rogue states are attacking their neighbours, protected from intervention by the threat of nuclear annihilation.
Nuclear Weapons (their own, and Red China's) are what allows the North Korean government to continue oppressing its population.
Nuclear Weapons enable The Land Of The Bear to invade The Ukraine.
Despite this, nuclear power has otherwise been mostly regulated out of existence. It is cheap, safe, and abundant, yet various laws make it either artificially expensive or outright illegal to heat your home with it, light your rooms, power your transportation, trim your hedges.
Regulations and anti-technology hysteria can prevent ordinary people from benefitting from innovation, but they cannot prevent the worst people in the world from abusing it.
So, whatever worst-case scenario you've imagined? Accept the fact that it's going to happen no matter what you do.
Legions of nanobots reconfiguring us into paperclips, a la Eliezar Yudkowski's bizarrely specific fever dreams? If you think it is possible, accept that it is inevitable.
Tumblr media
Intelligent machines with glowing red eyes malevolently hunting us through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a la James Cameron/The Wachowskis? If you think it is possible, accept that it is inevitable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lying governments using deepfaked videos to create un-debunkable false-flags and cheaply manufacture consent for wars to further their adrenochrome-harvesting operations? Let's face it, they don't even need AI for that, most people will just take their claims at face value.
Tumblr media
But what if we all agree to stop using it?
Technologies are sometimes lost, yes, but this happens gradually, over the course of decades if not centuries. Civilisations can decline and lose access to technologies, but that's not likely to happen for AI within our lifetimes.
If it works, if it is genuinely useful, it WILL be used.
We have seen this play out time and time again, throughout history.
So, we can either do what we did for nuclear power, and regulate it so heavily that it serves no useful purpose to the Just and the Kind, whilst availing the Corrupt and the Wicked...
Or we can accept Evil shall be done, and try with all our might to counter it with Good.
We can strive to Magnanimous heights of Faustian greatness, using AI to create untold works of beauty, so that Human Grandeur at least rivals Human Depravity.
Tumblr media
In summary:
We have stolen Fire from the Gods. The more noble-minded amongst us might as well do something worthwhile with it.

☆ even the gods bleed [ pt 4 ]
{☆} characters arlecchino, furina, lyney {☆} notes cult au, imposter au, multi-chapter, gender neutral reader {☆} warnings blood {☆} word count 3.7k {☆} previous [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ]
Fontaine was bathed in darkness, not even the moon daring to illuminate where the common man fears to walk. The streets were bleak and empty save for the constant, rhythmic ticking and clanking of machines marching on endlessly, dauntlessly wading where even the bravest dared not to venture. Not even the sharp click of the Gardes boots followed the occasional hisses of steam as they walked the barren streets.
It was haunting, and it'd been like that for days now. It showed little signs of stalling in the slightest, too. Every inch of Fontaine was practically crawling with Gardemeks– like a swarm of rats skittering about.
Arlecchino had secluded herself in the Hotel Bouffes d'ete for days at this point, waiting– biding her time. Her nails clicked against the wood as she tapped at the table in a stilted rhythm, the subtle click of the clock mixing into the clanking outside, weaving in and out of earshot as the patrols slipped by. She reached forward after a moment of thought, reaching for the white king.
She leaned back against the chaise, tilting her head just enough to catch a glimpse of a patrol of Gardemeks as they vanished behind the rows and rows of buildings. It wasn't enough to keep her attention for long, however, her features twisting in disinterest as she glanced back to the chessboard– and the letter neatly resting beside it. The seal was unmistakable and a sobering sight, demanding her attention– the soft hues of blue etched into the shape of a dragon stared back at her in a way that almost unsettled her.
She had already parsed through it's contents hundreds of times, but she was met with only vague, flowing script that only served to irritate her more then anything– it filled the page top to bottom yet managed to say nothing at all. Her hand reached out again, but instead of reaching for the letter she plucked the black rook from the board, setting it down with a soft click.
Arlecchino had all the time in the world to sit back and observe her prey, but all that time would be useless if she lacked the information to act.
And he was quite tight fisted about it, evidentially. None of her inquiries or attempts to decipher any potential codes in the letter left her empty handed. She could not act without even knowing the reason for his summons– it was almost worded like a personal affair rather then one would expect for a foreign diplomat. In truth, she'd expected a scalding report on her operatives, but it lacked any mention of anything of the sort.
She was no stranger to people masking hostility behind pretty words and compliments, not that it was ever unwarranted per se– the Fatui did not create connections through honesty and genuine kindness. They have strong armed more then their fair share of people into cooperation to the point distrust is all the Fatui are met with outside of Snezhnaya. Every word was meant to conceal the deceit, every action meant to conceal the price later paid.
So she had been..skeptical of the letter, to put it lightly. She doubted the Iudex of all people would offer a hand to the Fatui without a price attached– a trap, perhaps, meant to lure in the most powerful piece left on the board. Her eyes narrowed, reaching for a white rook and moving it to the right.
Or he was hiding something. Something that he simply couldn't risk getting out to anyone, not even the Divine themself. A tempting prize, whatever it was.
..A dangerous prize, too.
She'd considered burning the letter and forgetting it all together– the risk was great, and she couldn't risk getting caught up by whoever else the Iudex may have on his side of the board. But she could hardly pass up the challenge and the prize that he fought so hard to keep from prying eyes and ears. Even her agents came back empty handed each time. She lazily picked up a black rook, sliding the white pawn aside.
"Lyney," Arlecchino drawled, crossing one leg over the other and turning her gaze to the door as it slowly creaked open. The pale visage of Lyney stepped through, though his siblings were noticeably absent. The weariness that weighed down on his shoulders was apparent in the slightest furrow of his brows and the subtle creak of leather as he clenched his fists behind his back. "Father." He choked out, the title dragged out by the sharp inhale and shaky exhale.
He looked out of breath, she noted.
The silence that lingered after the small exchange was punctuated only by the click of another chess piece being moved. She sets aside the black rook, letting it sit among the dozen other pieces that had been wiped off the board. She can see the conviction glinting beneath the fog of exhaustion, but if he would utilize it was another matter all together.
He had seemed to make his choice quickly, at the very least.
"Our contacts and operatives within the Fortress of Meropide have gone silent– all we have is their final confirmed missive.." His voice is confident, but it is rigid as the words spill from his lips. He takes a sharp step forward, unfolding his arms from behind his back and opening his hands– the small, water stained and messily folded note catches her eye, plucking it from his palms with a half hearted interest. "They believe the Duke left the Fortress of Meropide..and that he may be coming to the Court of Fontaine."
Her eyes narrow dangerously, nearly crumpling the thin paper in her hands– yet just as quickly, she collects herself.
But she cannot get rid of the bitter taste on her tongue, lingering as she sets down the note and slides it to the side, her lips pursed into a thin line.
So the Iudex had shown one of his pieces..she tightly grasps a black rook, tipping over the white rook, letting it roll against the board.
If the Duke was involved, things were much more complicated then she expected– he would be a problem, she was certain. She couldn't blame the lamb for fearing the wolf, either. Whether her agents had been killed or captured by the man mattered little. He had his ways, and he was a force that could instill fear in even them.
Which meant the possibility that her operation was already compromised was far too real.
What had the Iudex so concerned he had gone through the trouble of bringing in the Duke and herself? The Fatui was one thing, but to specifically request one of it's Harbingers..
The Prophecy? The thought had her clenching her fist, but..no. If it were to rear it's head now, the Iudex could simply not afford to waste time on his contacts deciphering his nonsensical script– If the prophecy were to be the issue, there time would be limited to mere minutes in the worst of cases. Which meant it was worth biding his time in order to ensure absolute secrecy.
So if not the prophecy, then what?
Her next moves were..limited. She was already walking on eggshells considering her position and the reputations of the Fatui– especially with a Harbinger in the midst. If they caught wind of her operations, they'd weed out her operatives and be on guards for any snakes that lingered in their garden.
She reached for the chessboard again, picking up one of the white rooks from the board with a scowl. The sharp click as she sets down the white rook and sets aside the black pawn draws a shaky inhale from Lyney as she moves another black pawn, the dull click of the pieces drowning out the distant clinking of machines.
..A draw, perhaps.
The pieces were all falling into place– the players of this game were slowly being revealed. Whether she could secure her victory..she was unsure.
She wasn't even sure who her opponent was. Only that the Iudex himself was but another piece in their game.
Arlecchino reached for the board again, yet this time she hesitated. Perhaps she could still swipe the win from beneath them, if she played her cards right.
She would simply have to capture the king– or, if need be, let it end on a draw. Either way, she would not concede. She could not afford to concede. Down to the last piece, she would drag out this match until she was in a position to force their hand into the outcome she desired.
She stood slowly, picking up the king piece and observing it for only the briefest of moments before she set it down on the table, taking measured steps around the table and across the room. She was hunting a much more dangerous quarry today– it would be no simple runaway traitor this time.
"Do you remember the directive?" She inquired coldly, her hand lingering on the door for that long, tense moment. "..Yes, Father." Lyney faltered, taking a hesitant step back and bowing at the waist. "Then do not stray."
All that was left was the silence and click of the door shutting behind her as she disappeared down the hall, her boots clicking harshly against the floorboards. The rest of the agents knew better then to linger in her path as she stepped down into the lobby, adjusting the cuffs of her sleeves. She barely even acknowledged the Fatui agent standing at the ready by the heavyset doors, their gloves hands held out with her cloak held loosely in their palms. She quickly snagged it from them, tugging it over her board shoulders and clasping it around her throat.
With a quick tug, she brought the hood up over her head to conceal her sharp features, lifting her hand and placing a neatly folded note within their waiting hands. She had only one chance to make the right moves and secure her victory– no matter the cost.
Each piece had it's purpose.
Oft, that purpose was a bloody and horrible end– but for the grand goal of the Fatui built on the backs of the dead, it was an honor.
She didn't bother speaking a word as she dismissed them with a wave of her hand, pushing open the heavyset doors and stepping out into the barren, damp streets. The rhythmic clink and whir of Gardemeks was still distant– she needed to move. Her boots clicked and splashed in the rain soaked stone of the streets as she slithered between the buildings, ducking through the openings in the patrols.
It was almost too easy.
She tilted her head back, taking in the towering Palais Mermonia with a scowl, her hands clenched into fists. The final moves were being played– the king was within her reach, yet she felt no more confident then when she began.
The air carried a sense of unease, thick and heavy, filling her lungs until she felt her breath still in her chest– listening to the empty, bleak night that seemed so..quiet.
She'd done her fair share of research, had more then her fair share of her agents try to peer into the Iudex's office or the Archon's supposedly hidden chambers, but every attempt was a failure. She had to give them credit, they were quite elusive when they wished to be. Though now she only thought about it bitterly– this was all a risky gamble, in the end, and only time would tell if it paid off.
With minimal effort, she'd managed to pull herself to the flat, tiled roof, eyeing the massive tower peaking out of the center cautiously. At least here the wandering patrols down below weren't likely to notice her..she could hear them passing by the spot she'd been in only a few minutes ago, just beneath her. She pulled the hood further over her face, peering through the sheer darkness of the night for any oddities, but it was almost impossible to see in the dark.
Her boots clicked softly against the tiles as she approached the tower jutting out from the Palais, her hand gliding along the smooth stone, pressing against odd indents or crevices. If it was for the Archon's chambers, she doubted they made it very difficult– she'd only met the woman once, but she doubted the Iudex make it all that complex just from a brief glance. And it surprised her little when one of the stones sunk into the wall, gears whirring as the walls split open to reveal a stairwell straight into an inky black hall. Only the barest hint of light peaked under the door at the bottom, but it's occupants must have heard her, considering it went out not a moment later.
She cautiously stepped down into the small crevice, her breath visible in the bitter cold air– her shoulders tensed at the subtle sound of muffled footsteps behind the door, her vision flaring with a molten heat between her shoulder blades as she reached for the worn handle of the door. The heat of her vision was enough to just barely heat the metal, her vision flaring like a quickly building inferno.
Arlecchino was prepared for a fight, if it came down to it.
The door creaked as she pressed against it, shoving it open with a grunt of effort and surveying the room with narrowed eyes and a biting remark on the tip of her tongue– the lavish opulence was expected, she supposed, but the lack of the towering figure of the Iudex was not.
Yet before she could get a word in or even take in her surroundings properly, the light flickered back on and she had to squeeze her eyes shut with a hiss at the sudden brightness. She could hear the door being shoved closed behind her, the hurried footsteps retreating just as quickly as her eyes adjusted to the light.
..This was a joke, wasn't it? It had to be.
She'd expected the Iudex, perhaps even the Duke if she'd been unlucky, not the Hydro Archon. She had half the mind to test her worth as an Archon then and there, her temper flaring like an uncontrollable blaze, barely kept at bay. It took all her self control to force herself to smile politely at the woman rather then snarl.
"Miss Furina," She sneered beneath her hood, x shaped pupils locked onto the startled, trembling Archon with thinly veiled contempt. "What a..pleasant surprise. You'll have to forgive my manners, I assumed I was meeting with the Iudex." She observed her body language carefully– the way her eyes darted about like a frightened rabbit seeking escape, the slightest tremble of her lips..
Arlecchino opened her mouth to offer another scathing remark, but her jaw audibly clicked shut as her entire body seemed to lock up. Even her vision went cold against her back, a chilling feeling creeping up her spine as someone, or something, crept up behind her. Their footsteps were almost silent, the slight rustling of their clothes the only thing she could hear over her heart pounding against her ribcage.
Arlecchino had always prided herself on being on the other end of that sensation– she was the monster, and her target was the prey frozen like a deer between the hunters crosshair.
It was a chilling feeling to have the dynamic shifted on it's head.
She couldn't even swallow, her jaw clenched so hard she could hear it creak as she tried to reason with her quickly splintering mind– a futile effort, her joints locking up almost painfully. Black spots were quickly swallowing her vision from the lack of air in her lungs, the sound of shuffling behind her barely audible over the ringing in her ears.
For a moment – a moment too long to have only lasted the seconds that it did, yet so quick it gave her whiplash – she thought she would hit the floor dead before she could even glimpse her assailant.
And then it was gone. She came crashing back into reality with a startled inhale, her lungs burning and her knees nearly buckling under her. The instinct to lash out and kill whoever had done it was intense, yet she couldn't bring herself to move even a finger– it would be so easy to twist around and ignite them with searing flames, but her feet were rooted in place.
She almost didn't notice the surprisingly gentle hands unclasping her cloak, tugging it off her shoulders, if not for the sheer intensity of the presence still lingering behind her. Her mind was still fractured, struggling to right itself after the ordeal, and it had her seething.
"..Are you certain you held back enough?" Furina croaked, the normally soft lilt raspy and almost hoarse. "Not– not that I doubt your capability, most Divine!"
Arlecchino felt her nails dig harshly into her palms, heat swelling beneath her skin– Divine? Had she lost her mind? The Divine was..
The Divine was upon their throne where they belonged. She'd seen them!
"Hm. Well, maybe? Sorry, I didn't think it'd affect you too." Their voice was sickeningly soft as they stepped around her like she wasn't even there, focusing their attention on the Archon who seemed more then delighted about it. "What gave you that impression, most Divine? Aha, I..was completely unaffected, as you can see! Perfectly fine."
Furina let out a small squeak when they pinched her cheek, but the almost affectionate smile that tugged at their lips revealed the lack of malice behind the action.
"You're a bad liar, Furina. You might want to sit down..please?" They didn't take her protests for an answer, gently pushing her to sit on the bed before abruptly turning to face Arlecchino once more, a forced smile on their lips. "Oh, good, you're..uh, not dead. That's good. I thought I fried your brain. Sorry?"
..Had she hit her head on the way here? The Divine should still be on their throne, yet she couldn't shake the weight of their stare– it felt tangible. She felt like she was standing face to face with the stars– galaxies and constellations bearing down upon her.
She grit her teeth and clenched her hands until she felt the sting of her nails against her palms, grounding herself in the pain through the sheer overwhelming nature of their existence.
"You.." She croaks, reaching out with a shaky hand and grabbing them by the collar of their shirt, lifting them up until their feet left the floor– she pays no mind to the startled protests of the Archon. Arlecchino would crush her like a bug before she even got the chance to intervene and they both knew it. "You shouldn't exist– you aren't them, and yet you..you're the imposter, aren't you?" Her grip tightens yet they face her without an ounce of fear, meeting her unyielding glare with a pondering look.
Arlecchino wanted to make them bleed just to see if she could, the urge to sink her teeth into skin welling up in her chest to the point she visibly snarled, her mask of politeness long . "You're the imposter." Her expression falls for a moment before she schools it into one of apathy, setting them back down and holding them there for a moment, finally releasing them after a tense moment. "Or you were supposed to be."
Hers brows furrow– she wants to demand answers, to throttle them for damning them to being nothing more then dolls for the supposed Divine to break at their whim, but none of the words come to her.
"..Why now? The current Divine has been in power for years, yet you descend now?" Her shoulders tensed, lips pursed into a thin line– it's impossible to ignore the truth that lay before her. The Divine is a fraud and this..imposter is the true Divine. How many years had they been in power, now? How many years were they waiting? Why did they wait? Was the suffering of Teyvat not enough? Was the blood that painted the steps of their stolen throne not enough?
She'd personally been on the wrong end of the Divine's wrath– she wonders..had they watched? Had they seen the cruel hand of their imposter and turned their back on Teyvat?
"I.." They hesitated. It made her seethe, her hands clenching into fists at her sides– her vision flickered, flames swelling within it's casing just to be smothered by the presence of the Divine. But once that spark had been lit, she refused to let it go out. "I didn't know."
The answer does not satisfy her. There is an itch beneath her skin that she cannot scratch, a fire that burns in her chest so hot it scorches even herself.
"And what about now? Are you content to cower like prey in the safety of the Palais Mermonia?" She snapped, taking a step forward, her brows furrowed and her glare intense– she can see the slightest bit of worry in their eyes. She revels in it. "Will you let them use your acolytes like pawns? How many more need to be broken on the steps to your throne before you act?"
Again, her vision flares and dims– it refuses to be used against the Divine that created it.
"Have you no answer?"
The room is silent. They do not speak and neither does she.
Even the world itself seems to quiet in the face of her accusations, fury boiling to the surface so hot it incinerated all it touched.
"I will kill them myself."
Their words are quiet, but they are not soft– there is a vindictive, searing anger that explodes out like dying stars within their eyes. The sight of constellations replaced by a void that would not be . The smell of ichor grows stronger– to the point she feels almost lightheaded.
"..I am aware that I have failed in preventing this, but I had no choice in the matter. Still," They muse, their voice like the tolling of bells. A solemn melody that stills the swelling fury burning in her chest, if only for a moment. "I will rectify it– I will tear down their throne of lies and let not even the earth tarnish itself by burying their corpse among it's soil."
They pause for a moment, holding out their hand– scarred and bandaged by the weapons of the devout, yet still they take upon the burden of dirtying their hands to save those who did not save them.
"Do you trust me, Arlecchino?"
Did she?
"Will you help me?"
She exhales heavily, meeting the starry iris' of the Divine with a scowl still tugging at her lips. Arlecchino trusted no one but herself.
"..Yes."

Nat stared at her computer screen, cursor blinking in tandem with her heartbeat, so loud in her ears she may as well have been at a metal concert. Months she had worked on her project, skipping meals, staying awake until sunrise, and then a few hours more after that. Now she was a few keystrokes away from finally testing it. Cables ran from her ramshackle computer, meeting and mingling with others attached to a bank of hard drives, all spinning with uploads and downloads. On the inflatable mattress behind her, the fruits of her labour lay eerily still. With a deep, shaky exhale, she typed in the last few lines of code into her launcher, and pressed the enter key.
The whirring of the fans pointed towards the makeshift server seemed to drown out all other noise as the program executed. Then a series of smaller fans, a sharper sound than the box fan nearby, as they all sprang to life at once. Nat pressed her palms together as her creation came online. As servos activated and limbs went from rigid to an almost relaxed state, she couldn't help but whisper “it lives” to herself. The machine in front of her made a sudden jolt, and a light on the side of its head illuminated a pale white. Online and active. She twisted from her position on the floor to check her monitors and saw that all systems were operating nominally. Neural pathways were registering stimuli, artificial synapses were firing as thoughts began to form. It worked!
Nat placed her hand on the machine's upper back and guided it to a sitting position. She had been sure to feed the computer a good handful of data about herself, and the basics of knowledge in order to train the AI and make sure it didn't immediately shut down from overstimulation.
God knows I certainly would have, she thought to herself with an eyeroll.
“Are you awake?” her first question was more of a way to test the robot's speech recognition, its self evaluation, word association, and also to ensure that the vocal modulation was up to satisfactory conditions.
“I am awake,” it responded. The robot drew its arms closer to its torso and seemed to look around the room briefly, before turning its head to face Nat.
“Do you know who I am?” she asked, once again checking its recognition and perception.
“Natalie, you created and programmed me, I believe,” it tilted its head almost as though trying to determine if this was the correct answer. The data she had fed it before it woke up had included details about herself, photos and videos of her, vocal samples, and the AI was interpreting this information and comparing it to the details in front of it. The face, the voice, it all matched. But the robot seemed almost unsure, as if contemplating whether the information it had was incomplete. Perhaps it had been told that this person, whose face and voice it knew, was the one who built it, but that did not necessarily mean the information it had was true. Nonetheless, Nat smiled and nodded, and the robot's shoulders almost imperceptibly relaxed.
“That's right. I did create you, and I programmed you to be something new, but familiar. You have a lot of potential, and I'm glad to meet you.” The robot tilted its head at the framing of the statement.
“What potential do I have?” it asked. A curious mind, or simply a rudimentary AI probing for information to expand its knowledge set?
“You have multiple functions as yet unseen. All of you, from the smallest details of your body, to your quizzical mind, all are new ways to expand the experience of everyone.” When the robot did not respond right away, and simply looked down at its form, still sitting upright on the air mattress, she continued her explanation. “Your frame is designed with limb augments and prosthesis in mind,” she gestured to the carbon fiber metal that made up its hands and arms. “Your sensor suite is expected to replace the damaged vision or hearing of someone who has lost theirs. Your AI can expand and contain the breadth of knowledge and actually learn, instead of just regurgitate answers it had received beforehand.”
“What of this?” the robot touched the gray fleshy material covering its lower abdomen, stretching down to its thighs.
“That is actually two things. The first is a synthetic skin that can be created to replace basic skin grafts and other replacement techniques we currently have. The second is that the skin is used as a mount for artificial nerves that can replace damaged ones.”
The robot ran its hands over its body as she explained it. Fine black digits ran over smooth arms and shoulders, stroking across the lighter fake flesh that extended over parts of itself. It then raised its head and looked at her again, cocking its head to the side. In the black glass dome of its face, Nat could only see her own reflection, distorted like staring into dark water. She had always taken issue with the way her nose sat, or criticized that one eyebrow was higher than the other. The self deprecation had always come easy, but looking back at herself from this angle, it was like seeing herself anew, as she really was. When she had begun construction on the robot's exoskeleton so long ago, she had wondered if this would feel like interacting with her child for the first time, but now, she realized, it was more like talking to herself. She felt love for the machine in a way that was hard to quantify, and thus, she knew, she loved herself, in some weird, roundabout way.
“My design, my purpose, is for medical research, is that correct?” the robot asked. She saw, in her reflection, the corners of her mouth turn up in a smile that she liked seeing.
“Your design, yes. You were made with the intention of looking into a variety of medical advancements all at once, to see how they might interact with each other, as well as individually. But your purpose is for you to decide, once you find it. That might take some time, but I think all living things will eventually find it.”
“Am I alive?” the robot's question wasn't exactly unexpected, but it was quick to ask so bluntly.
“Scientifically, maybe not. Ethically, I'm sure some people would take issue with me trying to say otherwise, but realistically? In my mind? You move, you think, you have the potential to imagine, and dream, and exist here. I don't see why you couldn't consider that being alive.”
The robot nodded, its hidden visual sensors scanning Nat up and down, taking in the sight of what it could consider life, based solely on firsthand experience and not a dataset provided before it had even been conscious. Her dyed blonde hair had faded quite a bit since its last treatment, with longer dark roots peaking out. Her eye mascara was smudged, but the dark rings around her eyes framed her gray-blue irises almost ethereally. Her loose tank top draped across her body and hid her shape, and her shorts were stained with pen ink. In spite of her unkempt appearance, or perhaps because of it, the robot perceived, that this was life.
They both shook off the initial studiousness of their first interaction, and Nat turned to her computer, minimizing the command prompt window and revealing a program with a split screen. On one side, an image that appeared to resemble an approximation of a human brain structure. On the other, lines of data were being written and recorded, a text log of the robots experiences made legible.
“Before we get too existential,” Nat said almost wistfully, “we need to make sure your various systems are functioning the way they are intended to.” She turned back to the robot and handed it a ball. It appeared like a gel filled stress ball, and the robot took it, turning it over in its hand. “I just need you to give that a squeeze. Use your instincts and apply enough pressure to squish it, but not break it.”
The robot looked at the ball for a moment and squished it twice in its hand. The portions of the ball not covered by the robot's palm and fingers would expand briefly with the pressure, but would relax as soon as the pressure was let off. The robot then closed its fist around the ball, with the gel-filled portions blowing up to larger size, and it held that position. Nat jotted a note down on a piece of paper with her pencil and then nodded.
“Okay, you can go ahead and release it.” The robot relaxed its fingers and the ball returned to its normal shape. Nat took it and then turned to fully face the robot again. “Now I'm going to test the artificial nerves in the skin.” She pressed the eraser of her pencil against the gray flesh on the robot's hip and turned to look at her monitor. A portion of the brain image lit up. “Do you feel that?”
“Yes,” the robot answered curtly. Nat scribbled something else down on her note paper.
“Okay, now look over there,” she gestured with her pencil. She had to be sure that the sensation registration was due to the actual physical stimuli, and not the recognition that touching the spot should produce a registration. The robot turned its head to look in the direction she had indicated, and then she pushed down on the middle of its thigh. Again, she turned her head to look at the screen, and saw the same area of the brain image glowing. “Do you feel that?”
“Yes,” the robot answered again.
“Don't look, but show me where,” she said. Making sure that it could identify the location of the sensation was also important, so its spatial awareness was also under observation. The robot slid its hand over the skin and touched a single finger directly next to her pencil. A simple example of manual dexterity, which would certainly be tested later, but good to know. “Okay, now one more,” she said. Flipping her pencil around, she pressed the sharpened graphite into a spot near its groin, where the thigh and hip met. Even without seeing the pencil, the robot reacted stronger than she had anticipated. It jolted at the sudden sharp stimuli, and the hand that was still resting on its thigh clenched into a fist. She quickly withdrew the pencil from the skin.
“I'm so sorry!” her voice seemed almost panicked as she checked the monitor. Not only had it registered the sensation, but the synaptic response on the monitor showed a lingering feeling as it slowly dissipated. “How do you feel?” she turned her head back to look at the robot, which had returned its gaze to her.
“Warm,” it answered. She looked down to see that her hand was placed over the spot her pencil had poked, stabbed really, and that feeling was helping to calm the feeling in the robot. She exhaled, and pushed her bangs back. At least that much worked.
“I'm going to log your reactions so far, just a second.” Nat spun around on the floor, selecting a portion of the text that still scrolled across her screen and saving it in a separate folder. The robot tilted its head and examined the tattoo on her shoulder while she worked. A diamond butterfly unfurling its wings and escaping a cocoon made of coal on the back of her right arm. A little on the nose, to be sure, but her friends had assured her the imagery was lovely. Something beautiful and real coming out of a period of harsh change under tremendous pressure. It defined Nat's life, growing up in a family that was always standoffish, not fitting in for so long and not knowing why. Diagnosis after diagnosis making matters worse, while she struggled to find herself, becoming sloth, and finally discovering her own truth and breaking free of the old things. She still carried parts of her from before, but she was unrecognizable and planned to live her life the way that was best for her. None of this was necessarily spoken by the art itself, but the idea was still conveyed well enough.
“What is all this,” the robot said in a softer tone than it had been using, running its hand over the inked skin. None of the photos she had trained its recognition algorithm on had included the tattoo, apparently, and the robot only had a vague grasp of what it was. Instinctively, Nat's hand went up and she placed it over the robot's.
“It's a story, etched into my skin forever. It's art, something that makes me happy.”
“Can you do that? Make changes to yourself?” Nat laughed at the sudden question. The ink was the least of the changes she had ever made to herself.
“Yes, we all have these bodies, but the beautiful thing is that they're ours. We can generally do whatever we want with them.”
“Would I be able to do that?” the robot asked. It was a valid question, and had she been talking to a person, the answer would have been obvious. But the robot had been designed in a way that was different than a human. It had a similar shape, similar features, but it was made to do something entirely different, and because of that, the question was a bit more complex.
“Would that make you happy?” she decided to answer. The robot traced the wings of the butterfly gently with one finger.
“I don't know. Maybe,” it replied. Nat nodded.
“That's part of what I meant earlier, when I said you can find your purpose. If you want to make modifications, when you are ready, then perhaps you can.” There was a longer pause between the two as Nat saved the final file. She sat facing the screen for a moment, chewing the end of her pencil in thought. Once she had made up her mind, Nat pulled her mouse cursor up to a toggle that showed OFF and clicked it.
Honestly, fuck it, she thought, once again hearings her heart race in her ears, louder than before. If every other test is going off without a hitch, might as well try the last bit. Turning around again, she faced the robot once more. The two of them sat with their legs crossed in front of them, the robot obviously at some point copying Nat's posture, though whether the choice was subconscious or not wasn't immediately clear.
“There's one more feature you were designed with that I want to check out,” she said. The robot tilted its head, studying her slightly flushed face. “For a variety of reasons, sometimes specific body parts are needed to be replaced, or built from scratch, and our current technological advancement is not where it could be. So you were also designed with this feature in mind, to see if it was possible to make one that accurately mimics the natural human body response.” Nat swore she heard a drum solo as she placed her hands on the robot's knees. From its position on the air mattress, it had a slightly higher position than her, which was more than reasonable.
“What do you need to do to test this response?” the robot asked innocently. Nat kind of wished there was a little bit more deviousness to the inquiry, but that was fine. Maybe it would learn that behaviour later.
“Just relax,” she said, pressing one hand on its lower abdomen and pushing it back slightly, which it obliged and propped itself back on its hands. “I need to see how it all works.”
Nat ran her hands from the robot's knees down its inner thighs, which seemed to tense and then relax with her touch. Though it hadn't questioned it before, the robot was suddenly aware of an extra appendage on its body, smaller and slender. But as her fingertips traced small circles across its inner thighs, the additional part began, quickly, to swell. The robot initially believed it to be some sort of error, but the slight twinkle in Nat's eyes belayed this concern, and it watched as she began to press her lips to the inner, upper thigh portions of its skin. Each kiss sent a shock of reaction up the leg, to the groin where the part had become nearly fully erect, and then up to the robot's brain. Without knowing why, the robot clenched one of its hands against the mattress.
“It does react realistically,” Nat said. The robot seemed to shiver as she stopped. “That's good news, but there's a few other things I want to make sure work.”
“Like wh-!” the robot was cut off as Nat smirked and engulfed its cock in her mouth. The skin had the same feeling as human, and the heat it produced was comparable to any person, but the rush to Nat's head was far more exhilarating than any other time in her life. Her tongue ran over the tip and the robot's leg shook. She sucked it further into her mouth and she swore she heard the robot's internal fans kick up to compensate for the increased heat. She tried to steady herself, breathing through her nose as she bobbed her head up and down slowly on the robot's cock, feeling like it was melting on her tongue. She chanced a glance up at its black domed face, which was tilting from side to side, thrashing around in ecstasy. Certainly the plan was working well. But she needed to check how well.
Grabbing the robot's hips, scooting closer, she began moving her head faster, running her tongue across the tip of its cock every time she got near the top. The robot's legs were now quaking quite a bit, and it suddenly leaned forward, placing its hands on the back of her head and bucking its hips, the loud whirring of its fans matching her heartbeat. It held her in that position for just a moment before releasing her. Nat pulled her head up off its member, relieved to be able to take a few full gulps of air.
“What was that?” the robot asked, its voice peaking.
“That was a test to see if you can orgasm,” Nat panted, “and while normally you might produce a sort of liquid material, I wasn't really able to... get anything like that for you.” Nat's face was bright red as she said the last few words. “There's a small reservoir system in your lower abdomen and a pump that would probably recreate it, but I didn't have anything to use this time around so it's empty. That said, it's good to know everything is working as planned."
The robot was still shaking minutely, and Nat watched it, pushing her bangs back and rubbing her thighs together. She had a desperate need of release, herself. It wasn't exactly part of the plan, but she felt needy, and even though she had never quite gone that far with any person before... The thought crept back into her mind, seeing her own reflection in its faceplate, loving herself. And she wanted to feel loved. Glancing down, she noticed that the robot's cock was, in fact, still fully erect. She had felt it unnecessary to reproduce a refractory period, and thus the robot simply could wait it out or, had it been aware, simply shut off the system. But she didn't want it to be aware. Not yet.
“Hey, come here,” she said, getting up and holding the robot close. Even the carbon fiber felt warm and lifelike to the touch. Not as soft as skin, but comforting. The robot reciprocated, wrapping its arms around her waist and pulled her close. She held that position for a second, then pulled back from it. “Now to check endurance, is that okay?” Nat almost feared a response that was unsure she would even get.
“Of course, if that's what's needed.” The robot's blunt answer betrayed its appearance as it looked her up and down. She stripped off her shirt, and touched the robot's stomach. It mirrored her behaviour, splaying its fingers over her skin and dragging them across her body. As it felt her, she knew it wasn't able to truly experience the sensation, but hoped that perhaps it was perceiving it. She undid her shorts and dropped them as it explored her chest, her head tilting back. She slid her underwear down as well, and knelt in front of the robot completely naked. She couldn't hide her face, she knew it, and the robot would likely not understand the concept of shame, but she still felt compelled.
Its hands trailed down her hips and thighs, and one cupped her own cock. Nat felt like dying as it ran the soft fingertips over her, but she couldn't ask it to stop. She wanted more, her body felt like an inferno. It stroked her cock, and ran its thumb over the tip, mimicking the way she had licked it, and she let out a squeak. It pumped her a bit more, before she felt like collapsing backwards.
“Wait, wait, hold on,” she panted. The robot immediately released her, and she slid up onto the air mattress. Laying on her side, she brushed away a few cans and bottles strewn on the floor, and tossed a pair of older underwear to the side, finding a small bottle. The contents were crystal clear, and glinted under the light of the nearby lamp. She popped the bottle open and poured some of it on her fingers. Leaning forward and pressing her head against the robot's chest, she let the slick digits coat her ass in the liquid, probing her own hole, which gave way easily to one of her fingers. She then poured some more of the lube onto the robot's cock, and it shook slightly as she stroked it up and down, coating it in the shimmering liquid. Nat then laid herself on her back, legs spread, and gestured vaguely from its member to her ass.
“Use your instincts and apply pressure,” she said, trying to go off her own script, “and be careful.”
The robot slid up between her legs, pressing down on her ass. Nat bit her lip as it pressed against her, but when it placed its hand on her cheek, Nat suddenly felt completely at ease. Almost effortlessly, the robot slid into her asshole. Nat arched her back up, suddenly feeling very full. The robot hadn't been designed to be abnormally large in any aspect of its anatomy, but right now, it felt like she was stuffed to the brim. Her legs settled on either side of the robot's hips, and it took over. Slowly it moved back and forth into her, small unintended gasps escaping her mouth every time it did. Her body was melting, and the robot seemed to sense it. As she loosened, it took some bolder moves, increasing its speed ever so slightly, or giving a few stronger thrusts, which caused Nat to toss her head back. The robot pulled her up, one hand on her lower back, the other behind her head, and it began to move harder and faster. Nat's mouth fell open, a string of expletives tumbling out in high pitched squeals and moans.
Any time she had ever played with herself like this, Nat had only gotten a little bit of pleasure. Enough to enjoy, surely, but she could never reach higher levels of ecstasy without touching her cock. Now, it felt unneeded. Her whole body was hot and tense, her brain felt on fire. It stroked against her prostate with every thrust now, sending fireworks blooming behind her eyes. Her moans drowned out the sounds of the box fan, and the hard drives, and the robot's internal fans, racing to keep up with the increased activity.
“Fuck, fuck, oh fuck,” Nat could barely squeeze out, “oh fuck I'm almost there, please don't stop,” the robot's legs were trembling as well, the same as before, but it obliged, going from a slow to a faster pump, moving its hips in tandem with her own partially involuntary movements as she tried to fill herself up with the robot's cock more and more. “Oh, ffffuck-!” Nat's legs pulled up as the buildup intensified, like a coiled spring pressed down to its limit, before finally releasing. The sound from her mouth was less like a moan, or a cry, and more like an old computer screeching as it processed its next action. Her hips thrust up and down as she came, only pressing her down further on the robot's cock, filling her stomach while she rode the wave of her ecstasy. As she finally came down, legs trembling, the robot placed her back down fully on the mattress, and she pushed softly on its abdomen, indicating for it to pull back and out.
Nat laid on the mattress, stomach splattered with cum, legs too weak to even stay with knees bent up. She panted, trying to catch her breath that had escaped her long ago. The robot sat at her feet, head tilted, hand raised towards her as if contemplating how to help her, if she was in need, did she need medical assistance or anything? But Nat just laughed, and pushed herself up.
“That... I needed that more than you know. I think more than I knew, thank you.”
“Was the testing successful?” the robot asked.
“It was, you should be able to access a um...” she wondered exactly what she wanted to say, “a flaccid function, if you can find it. To keep it down,” Nat glanced down at the gray cock, still slick with lube. The robot nodded and sat back, accessing its own functions, and she watched as the member began to shrink down to a standard size.
“I'm glad you were able to find what you needed,” the robot said.
Nat shook her head, “I knew you had it all. I'm just happy you could experience everything the way I can.” Forcing herself up, Nat sat upright and pulled the robot closer, kissing the faceplate.
“I do have one more question, if that's okay,” the robot said.
“Of course,” Nat pushed her disheveled bangs up, “anything.”
“Earlier, when you first woke me up, you asked me if I knew you, and I identified you as Natalie. But you failed to identify me in the same instance.”
“That's because you never had a name,” Nat smiled, “not everyone has one they like right away. Is there something you would like to be called?”
“I think... I would like to find that out,” the robot said, placing its hand over hers.
“Well,” she turned her palm up and held its hand in her grip, “you have time to find that, too.”

OH MY FUCKING GOD
Seriously this has opened my eyes to something that I honestly feel like I already suspected because there is SUCH an emphasis on “teaching them while they’re young” and not turning them out into the world until they are “past the point of no return” like this is why Christian fundamentalists hate college so much, because at that age people are still capable of reversing the damage (at least, a hell of a lot easier then they are at say, fifty). The prefrontal cortex doesn’t finish developing until around 25, so if an indoctrinated teenager goes to college at 18 and begins to see reality, they are much more likely to leave the church than someone who is sheltered from the world until they’re 30.
(Side rant: This is also why it’s so frustrating to talk to Christian adults who seem to be genuinely incapable of thinking logically. It explains a phenomenon that I noticed a long time ago: when speaking to relatives, I attempted to show them that they didn’t actually agree with, let’s say for the sake of the example, capitalism. I would bring up all their complaints with our current system and demonstrate how each one is a facet of capitalism. I was able to get them to agree to each individual point, but when I tried to put them all together as a whole, the person (usually my grandpa) would revert back to “okay the system is flawed but it still works” even though we just spent an hour discussing how it doesn’t work, actually. They are incapable of putting multiple pieces together and viewing them as one whole.)
I remember so clearly growing up the sermons on Proverbs 22:6 (Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it) and the pastors stirring up panic about public school and colleges stealing our children’s faith and poisoning their minds. I remember how afterwards all the parents exclaimed how their children would never go to college, that this is why they homeschooled, that this was yet another reason why young men should go straight into the work force and young women should immediately get married and become baby making machines. I vividly remember the panic over statistics of how many people leave the faith in college and how it was so much higher than the numbers of essentially any other group.
Fundamentalists worst fear is reality. They do not want their children to have any exposure to any rhetoric besides their own, unless it is presented disingenuously by apologetics teachers. Everything is filtered and twisted and watered down to keep us “safe” from reality.
This is literally how cults operate. Fundamental Christian evangelicalism IS A CULT
This is also why they target vulnerable groups, because like the OP mentions, people who have damage to their prefrontal cortex are much more likely to fall for indoctrination. This is why you see Christian “outreach groups” in homeless shelters and rehabilitation programs and hospitals. This is targeted and it is malicious. Even the “good Christians” who really do want to actually help people are upholding this system that actively harms vulnerable groups.

I'm sure you've seen that post about Gabriel finding out how V1 sees him, this post in case you haven't, it's pretty funny.
I was thinking though, what about the opposite of that? What if when V1 and Gabriel were in a safe space together V1 chooses to crank up it's graphics and look around. Partially since it gets a chance to actually look at how things are without having to worry about someone getting the drop on it in such an inefficient state but also so it can look at Gabriel in his entirety. A kind of love language exclusive to machines.
It's most likely that V1 probably wouldn't be able to articulate what it's doing to Gabe or that it's a form of trust/compassion, but what would Gabe think of it anyway?
GOOD POST....and yes i absolutely love this little thought...v1, as a war machine, likely doesn't even consider its capacity to have improved "eyesight" and would never otherwise utilize its higher resolutions. it's set at what it considers to be optimal, not only as it conserves its power properly but also because simplifying its field of vision is actually highly beneficial to the chaotic combat of hell. but being with gabriel makes it consider a whole world of things it never could before, its mind growing rapidly in unexpected trajectories and producing thoughts and feelings of a complexity far beyond what it was ever meant to be. and something like this, though it seems small or simple, is relinquishing its capacity to fight in that moment which should be against every protocol v1 has. yet gabriel takes its priority, overriding such concerns to be deemed more important...to be deemed safe from combat-readiness. it sees him in full clarity with a rush of its vents, hot air blasting through fans as gabriel as he truly is renders in its vision - the radiant gold of heaven, the pearlescent armor highlighted in luminous rainbows, gabriel himself gently lit from the inside in a form so solid yet gently shimmering as though on the edge of being a mirage. his wings and halo are unlike anything it's seen, light made manifest, air and glass melded together into brilliant blue hues that contain an entire spectrum within them when they shift - he is full of light and color, and all it wants is to process every pixel of him when it sees what's it's missed all this time.
gabriel is a bit worried at first, v1 going so still and so hot never being a good sign, but soon it's looking all around him in different angles, taking him in enthusiastically enough it's no longer too concerning just. unsettling lol it's hard for v1 to explain this to him when he demands to know what's gotten into it, but once it's able to offer a basic idea of how its visuals operate...gabriel is quietly stunned. v1 is so different from himself, from anything god had made, and he had never considered how it sees the world. how special it is to see it now, taking up so much of its capacity just to look at him, to know that it cares to see nothing else in its true reality but him. he even asks it if there's anything else they might look at, but v1 just flippantly shakes its head, that nothing else is worth the effort. what does it care about the world? and for gabriel, that's striking...to be the one thing in the world that v1 wants to remember in true detail, that he will stand out in its mind against a backdrop of polygons and textures clearly divorced from their realities. so he lets it take all the pictures it wants, and his wings show how they can change their color with a very true, very unique sense of love.
