Dinner had been only the tiniest bit awkward, and it didn’t help that there was suddenly a space between the two of them he wasn’t sure he could fill without divulging secrets that didn’t belong to him. But he had to tell her. She had to know. And Janine had given her blessing, so there was that.

He went and got the crème Brulee from the oven and brought one to Molly. She looked up with a smile. “You remembered!”

“No matter how little money we had, there were always the ingredients for crème Brulee around,” he said. “I swear it’s the only confection I can make without destroying an oven.”

She picked up her spoon and took a bite, a small moan escaping her lips. “Score one for the oven tonight.”

He took his own dessert to his seat and watched her eat for a moment. “I need to tell you something,” he said when she was halfway done.

She lowered the spoon to the table and then folded her hands into her lap. “Alright,” she said quietly.

He paused for a moment and then got up to get more wine. Wine would help. “I am...rather close with Janine Hawkins. But our relationship has never what it has seemed. We are friends, nothing more, and we have been since I started to make a name for myself in London. A few years back, there was an actor who was working his way through all the ingenues and young starlets. Janine was one of his targets..”

Molly’s eyes widened when he looked at her. “You mean that…?”

“It was one night. Janine had more wine than she usually allows herself and she was having a wonderful time being flattered by him. He decided not to use protection and she didn’t protest. But one time was enough. She found out she was pregnant a week after he disappeared into thin air, having given her a fake name and fake mobile number. She wanted to keep the baby but needed a relationship to cover her indiscretion. I volunteered to take it so far as leaving her at the altar if need be.”

“And you being named Russell’s father,” Molly said.

Sherlock nodded. “I pay child support, and I let her take me to court to ensure it was a spectacle. But in reality, it’s merely money to help my friend raise her child in peace and quiet.”

“So let me understand this,” Molly said slowly as Sherlock poured her wine as well. “Janine is not an ex-flame. Russell is not your son.”

“Correct,” Sherlock said.

“Russell’s actual father is someone who seduced Janine and then ran off?”

“And now Janine has the potential of marrying a man who loves Russell as much as I do, and she’s telling him the same thing I just told you,” he said with a nod as he handed her his glass. “Tonight, hopefully.”

Molly took a long swallow of the wine. “But you don’t…?”

“I only ever wanted a family with you,” he said quietly. “Janine’s parents are very conservative, but not so much that they mind an unwed woman who was abandoned by the father of the child so long as they were contemplating marriage. So when she found out she was pregnant she begged me to put my acting skills to use and convince her family I would do right by her and then call off the wedding. But truth be told, I couldn’t completely pull off the abandonment part.”

“You aren’t in love with her, are you?”

“No,” he said. “But I am head over heels for my godson. Have been since I heard his heartbeat for the first time.” He watched Molly relax. “Would it have really made a difference if Russell was mine?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I mean, you and I...and the miscarriage..and then to hear you had a child, I’ll admit it was a blow. But I still loved you. I was just in so much pain.”

“Well, you do realize this is a lie you’ll have to be a part of if there’s a reconciliation,” he replied. “But I think you’ll make a wonderful stepmother for a start, and then...we’ll see.”

Molly gave him a smile, something fond and soft. “You wanted a family so badly, Sherlock. If I can’t give you one, will it matter?”

“There’s foster care, adoption, surrogacy...if there’s anything at all we can do we’ll do it together, as we should have before,” he said, setting his glass down and reaching for her hand, lacing his fingers between hers. He was surprised to see she still wore the birthstone ring he had given her, and he made a note to himself should he ever be lucky enough to marry her again, she’d get new rings. Better than the nearly microscopic diamond solitaire he’d managed to scrape together the money for, but nothing gaudy. Just something that was truly her.

She ran her finger against his wedding band and looked up at him. “Sherlock?”

“Yes?” he asked.

“I don’t have to go home tonight,” she said.

After a moment he stepped closer as she stood from her seat and he let go of her hand, pulling her into a loose embrace. He looked down at her and saw nothing but a shining love in her eyes. “Then don’t leave my side until we have to go to the theatre tomorrow,” he murmured. “And let me show you how much I missed you.”

“I would like that,” she said before raising up on her toes and kissing him softly. For the first time since she had left all those years ago, he felt whole again, as though the space in him was finally filled. She fit against him as he pulled her closer as if she was the last remaining piece to a puzzle and he didn’t want to let her go, but a shag on the floor of the dining area was not in the picture tonight. No, he wanted to lavish her with attention and make her realize she was, had been, and always would be the woman who owned his heart.

The cry of a child interrupted his plans, and Molly let out a soft chuckle. “Your godson?”

“Let me introduce you properly,” he said, pulling back and taking her hand, leading her to Russell’s room. He opened the door and saw Russell in his crib, standing up and crying in the dim night of the nightlight. He turned on the main light and Russell’s cries softened. “You aren’t alone, and we’ll see if you need your nappy changed or need a meal.”

“He’s gorgeous,” Molly said softly, watching them.

“His mother is very pretty, so I like to say he got his good looks from her and not the bastard,” Sherlock said. “Molly, this is Russell Hawkins, my godson, and your potential fake stepson should we actually get to that point again.”

Russell gave her a toothy grin and Molly reached over with a smile, letting him grasp her finger. “He’s adorable, too.”

“Yes, he is. We joke that he definitely did not get my personality.” He turned to her. “I’ll understand if you want to go back tot he apartment tonight. He sleeps well, but there are moments.”

“No,” Molly said, shaking her head before looking at him. “I’m right where I want to be.”

Sherlock felt his heart swell with those words and then he turned his attention to Russell and his needs. This boded well for things in the future...

Does CBD Help

The CBD industry is flourishing, conservatively projected to strike $16 billion in the United States by 2025. Already, the plant extract is being added to cheeseburgers, toothpicks and breath sprays. However without clinical trials in people, psychologists state CBD's result on anxiety is still a hypothesis and not an evidence-based treatment.

Is CBD harmful? " If you take pure CBD, it's pretty safe," stated Marcel Bonn-Miller, an adjunct assistant teacher at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medication. National Volunteer Week: Berk Moss’ Legacy Lives on at Tualatin NWR

Our 9,382 dedicated U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service volunteers in the Pacific Region gave an incredible 198,914 hours of their time to conservation in 2018. That is the equivalent of 24,864 eight-hour work days and 95 full-time staff members! These incredible folks deserve a huge thank you and during National Volunteer Week (April 7-13) we are aiming to do just that. This is the first in a series of blogs about U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service volunteers and projects. Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is a special place that has attracted, welcomed and included special people. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff, the Friends of Tualatin River NWR, volunteers, advocates, and the community at-large have made significant contributions to what this place has been, is, and will always be. 

It’s a place that represents visions and dedication to create and sustain a place for people and wildlife, learning for children and adults alike, but especially a place to foster sustainability of our collective future. Perhaps nobody understood this better that Berk Moss. He often quoted Thoreau: “In wildness is the preservation of life.”

It started back in 2003 when Berk was driving past the old refuge headquarters and noticed the new Tualatin River NWR sign. Always looking for opportunities for students and youth, Berk wondered if somehow the refuge could be a resource for science and nature education. So, he popped in and sought out Ralph Webber, Tualatin’s first refuge manager.

“Berk was a very passionate, caring man who I admired and respected for his ethic and caring for the natural world, one who wanted to share these qualities with our youth. A story that still resonates in my mind is my first acquaintance with Berk before any facilities had been built on the refuge for the public. He was chomping at the bit to bring classes out onto the refuge with few staff, no facilities and/or refuge materials, or any plans for how to manage logistics for such a task. After a long discussion, Berk took a deep breath and said, ‘Well, I guess we have a monumental job ahead of us.’”

That day, Berk left his business card and eagerly awaited the refuge’s first Outdoor Recreation Planner. It only took a couple of meetings with Berk to get the ball rolling. As a Science Director for Beaverton School District, Berk understood the needs of schools, teachers and the nuances that made them tick. He knew we needed more educators to make a team that would be the vital link with the community that would lead to success. So Berk helped plan and host a free pizza night for teachers, which, in turn, attracted the inaugural education committee. Led by Berk, the teacher team created the refuge’s environmental education program. June Poling, who was one of those educators, recalled:

“Berk was a man of many talents. At one moment he could be discussing the inner workings of epigenetics, and at the next moment writing a song about the beaver in his back yard. Berk’s we-can-do-anything attitude influenced everyone around him. He had a gentle way of encouraging me and others to think outside the box to find solutions to what seemed like insurmountable problems. I remember how palpable his excitement was about new discoveries.”

Berk certainly was not afraid to get dirty. One rainy, mucky winter he helped plant trees at the site that became the wetland observation deck. He could only laugh at himself for getting stuck up the knees in mud and having to be pulled out by fellow volunteers. Then there was the day I was figuring out the path the new trail would take. I was so excited to show him where the education study sites were going to be located, so I called him. He was on his way to a business meeting in Portland, but stopped by anyhow, dressed in business attire. He was a good sport as I drug him through the poison oak and the blackberries in his dress shoes and slacks to the spot that became the Rock Creek study site. He was dirty and wrinkled after that, but I am pretty sure he forgave me.

Berk gave so much of himself. Early on, we did not have a consistent and suitable place for working together. So in true Berk fashion, he opened his home and that is where most of the real work took place. So much was created in the hundreds of hours together at his kitchen table. As we were planning the Wildlife Center, I recall showing up at his house in Newberg at 5:30 a.m. to pick him up on the way to all day architectural design meetings up in Tacoma. He was always cheerful, even on those 16 hour days, providing the insight that guided what the classroom looks like today.

But it was more than planning; we knew we had to implement. Berk worked side-by-side with the refuge to write grants, plan budgets and evaluation plans and, ultimately through a Friends group and refuge partnership, help bring in several hundred thousand dollars to deliver the program. It was never easy. We always stuck together with a shared vision in mind, and Berk always brought wisdom and kindness.

Berk played a significant role in so much, including the first teacher workshop, the education curriculum, naturalist training, summer camp, Puddle Stompers, Friends group board member, advocacy when the refuge needed it, being a resource for other refuges and much more.  

But it only takes a trip to the Discovery Classroom to see and feel Berk’s presence and impact. Take a look at the pictures on the wall and you can sense his joy of helping thousands of youth connect with nature in very real and meaningful ways.

That classroom may be Berk’s lasting gift to conservation. He passed away June 1, 2018.

I visited with Berk several times in his final weeks. The last time he reached out to hold my hand and said: “We did it.” It wasn’t just the two of us that Berk was talking about. It was the staff, friends, teachers, students, and volunteers. All of us together.

Perhaps most telling is that Berk was cremated in his refuge volunteer vest. He also took with him his field notebook, a pencil, and the wooden coffee stir sticks he always carried to poke around in and explore nature.

I am honored to have worked with Berk Moss and know that we stand on strong shoulders as we continue his legacy into the future. He is missed.

There were many colorful posters about these action alternatives and eager representatives standing near them to answer questions. Paper and pens were provided to people so they could comment. Comments can be submitted online to ARDOT by July 27.

But having an "open house" (those were ARDOT's own words) without a formal presentation was a strange way to present important information at a key stage in the "30 Crossing" project. No ARDOT or Metroplan board members were introduced.

A timeline on one poster indicated that actual construction is slated to begin sometime next year.

Eye-catching charts and maps with technical jargon notwithstanding, the "presentation" came down to guesstimates about what things might be like if a lane is widened, curved or whatnot.

Except for a poster here and there, there was no detailed information about cost. The number $631 million is bandied around, but it comes without detail. Three companies that are candidates for contracts were listed on another poster.

But a light rail system was not offered as one of the action alternatives.

Although a meeting notice was posted on the ARDOT website, why was the event given minimal publicity?

The main attraction of the meeting was a long-awaited Environmental Assessment prepared by the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with ARDOT. The report followed federal regulatory guidelines.

An announcement came out early last month about the 45-day period for members of the public to examine the report at the Main Library. A copy was also available at the meeting for inspection — all three volumes of it, with a 123-page summary and 18 appendices running to hundreds of pages. (I didn't have the time to count how many.)

Why are we being given such a short time to study such a big (and important) document?

Of course, upgrades to public roads are essential. However, a suspicious person might come away with the notion that things are being hurried along in order to do something at public expense that most people in Central Arkansas oppose in the first place — that is, those who've been made aware of what's going on.

It seems only a handful of special interests have anything to gain from I-30 expansion.

I have had the privilege of fostering two of these special babies. Both were blind to one degree or another, and older. They both were adopted into wonderful homes, albeit sadly in Chicago. It seems that people in our lovely South just want perfect pets. I can't think of any other stupid reason as to why so many buy their dogs from breeders, when if they educated themselves just a little bit they would realize that this is the worst thing that they could do. Breeders, especially in Arkansas, are, at best, bad. And the worst? Arkansas is one of the all-time favorite states for puppy mills. Please adopt and save a life! And for God's sake, at least spay and neuter your pets!

I understand snowflakes cannot tolerate those with other views or tell it like it is having seen problems up close and personal, but everyone is entitled to their opinion without being belittled for expressing it. The NRA may have thrown money at his campaign, but ultimately it was the voters who elected him. So far he has not expressed any views that I disagree with and I strongly agree with many others. Maybe one borderline.

Record, you clearly don't have a clue about Cotton's accomplishments. Or perhaps because of your background you don't comprehend the significance of his military service.

1. As a law school graduate he could have gone into the JAG Corps, probably starting as a captain. Instead he choose the infantry as a 2nd lieutenant.

2. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Rangers and graduated the Ranger Course. Earning a Ranger Tab is no easy task.

THE TROUBLE WITH THE STARTUP FUNDING LANDSCAPE

It was not until Perl 5 if then that the language was suitable for writing serious programs, and yet is taboo in ours, is a good number of unthinkable ideas. Davon Davis’ mother had reminded him constantly about voting. So on a recent Sunday the 20-year-old cast his first-ever ballot for president before dishing up wings and fries to voters at a Souls to the Polls event.

Two issues were key to Davis, a Jacksonville native who is starting college in January: the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice. President Trump has failed at both, he said.

“When he got coronavirus, he’s telling people, ‘Oh, don’t worry about it, it’s not all that bad,’” said Davis, who added that he was angry because his own family members are vulnerable. “Not everybody has the money to pay for things if they do get sick.”

After he voted, Davis worked the Souls to Polls event to encourage Black residents of this Atlantic Coast city, the state’s most populous, to vote early. His cousins and brothers, they’d all already cast their ballots, he said.

“Wasn’t a better time than now to vote with all that’s going on in the world,” he said. “It’s the perfect time.”

Young voters like Davis have helped turn Jacksonville’s Duval County into an unlikely battleground in a state crucial to the presidential election. Republicans have long counted on running up votes in the state’s conservative north to compete with Democratic strongholds in south Florida, and the last time Duval County chose a Democrat for president was 1976, when voters went for Georgian Jimmy Carter.

“Wasn’t a better time than now to vote with all that’s going on in the world,” said Davon Davis, a 20-year-old native of Jacksonville, Fla., who said he voted for Democrat Joe Biden.

But Duval’s ruby red shine has dulled over the years. And if Democrats hold their lead with early votes, experts say, the county that both parties see as pivotal could flip.

Trump, who needs Florida to win reelection, won some surrounding counties by more than 50 points in 2016, but Duval was much closer. And in 2018, the county voted for a Democrat for governor for the first time in decades.

An “Obama coalition” of young white and Black voters and Latinos helped boost the candidacy of Andrew Gillum, the state’s first Black gubernatorial candidate for a major party, said Sharon Austin, a University of Florida political science professor. Black Americans make up about 30% of the county’s population and 54% of its registered Democrats.

“Democratic candidates have a realistic chance in that county,” Austin said.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s choice of California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate has helped his pitch to Black voters, she noted. Harris, the first Black woman on a major party ticket, came to Jacksonville on the first day of in-person early voting in October. “A lot of people in Duval, especially in the Black community, really like her,” Austin said.

Democrats in Duval have doubled their lead to 6 points over Republicans in voter registration since 2016, said Michael M. Binder, director of the Public Opinion Research Lab at the University of North Florida. Of the 55% of active eligible voters who had cast their ballots as of Friday, Democrats held an early-vote lead of about 22,000.

“If the Black vote in Duval turns out, it’s not because Duval is special — it’s because Duval is reflective of the Black vote across the state and across the country,” Binder said.

More than 8.7 million Floridians had voted by Sunday morning, closing in on Florida’s 9.6 million total 2016 count, according to U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida. By Friday, nearly 200,000 more Black voters had cast ballots than at the same time in the 2016 election, and that includes an increase in those under 29, said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of the BlackPAC. In previous elections, Black votes were left on the table in north Florida because of a lack of voter outreach. This year, voters are determined — “People are angry about what is happening in the country,” she said.

Steve Schale, a Florida Democratic strategist, said views of the state’s politics often discount Black voters in the north. “People’s impressions of Florida are always wherever they’ve been,” Schale said. “They think of Disney World, they think of African American voters, they think of Miami or Fort Lauderdale. And people forget, nearly 25% of registered African American voters in Florida live all in the I-10 corridor from Jacksonville to Pensacola.”

Schale, who led Obama’s 2008 campaign efforts in the state and runs a pro-Biden PAC, likes the way Duval is headed. On Tuesday, he wrote: “Unless something really goes south, Joe Biden is going to win Duuuuval.”

When Trump won the county in 2016 by only about 6,000 votes, Republicans noted it as unusual, said Dean Black, current chairman of the Duval GOP. Democrats Gillum and then-Sen. Bill Nelson went on to lose in their 2018 midterm elections, but the fact that both captured Duval came as a shock, Black said.

“In elections that are this close, every county in Florida is very important,” Black said in an interview from the party’s office in downtown Jacksonville. But Duval, he believes, will be pivotal. “The fact that Democrats have poured such a high level of resources into this county, year after year after year, they have made it a strategic focal point in the fight for Florida.”

Since Black became chairman at the end of 2018, the Republican Party opened several field offices, recruited more than 1,000 volunteers, and most recently knocked on 50,000 doors in a week. He described it as “an unprecedented ground game for Duval County” to compete with Democrats.

The Trump campaign has also focused on the county. Jacksonville, led by GOP officials, was briefly scheduled to host the Republican National Convention until the coronavirus outbreak worsened in the state. Trump rallied in Jacksonville in late September, and his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was in town last month. The campaign also opened a Black Voices for Trump office in northern Jacksonville, aiming to chip away at the Democratic base.

On Thursday, a county judge who served as chairman of the vote-counting board, which reviews and decides which rejected ballots should count, resigned from the panel after the Florida Times-Union reported he donated several times to the president and had multiple Trump signs in his yard, violating judicial and canvassing board rules.

Closer to the coast in Duval, Trump signs and flags become more apparent in yards and on trucks and boats. Gabe and Maria Goodman went to the Beaches Branch Library on a Sunday afternoon to cast their votes for Trump. The Neptune Beach couple said they believe the president dealt with the pandemic as best he could and deserved another four years.

“I think he’s handled it better than any Democrat president could have thought of handling it,” Gabe said.

White, retired voters like the Goodmans helped deliver Trump the state in 2016. But the president is struggling with the group amid the pandemic.

If there is one thing Republican leader Black and Daniel Henry, chairman of the Duval County Democratic Party, agree on, it’s their county’s role in the election.

“Duval will decide who the next president of the United States will be,” Henry said. Jacksonville residents are, on average, younger than those in other metropolitan cities like Miami, and he believes young African American voters “will have a huge impact in this election.”

Nonpartisan groups like My Vote Project have ramped up efforts to increase turnout among Black voters. On Sundays leading up to election day, churches participated in Souls to the Polls events to turn out their congregations in Jacksonville.

In interviews with about a dozen Black voters in Jacksonville, all said they voted or planned to vote to get Trump out of office.

On a Saturday afternoon, soon after rapper Common appeared at a Free the Vote event, friends Justin Lane, 22, and Tre Hall, 23, walked over the nearby early polling site, where Lane cast his vote for Biden.

“It’s on us to make a change,” he said, wearing his “I voted early!” sticker. “I have to show that as a young Black male, I understand that I am the future, and I do want to make a change for the better.”

After 2016, Hall said people at his church urged him and others to give Trump an opportunity to be a good president. “We gave him a chance for four years and he didn’t really show me anything,” said Hall, who voted for Biden on Monday.

Biden’s favorability among young Black voters is higher than with white or Latino youths, according to the latest Harvard Youth poll of voters ages 18 to 29. Justin Tseng, chair of the Harvard Public Opinion Project, which conducted the poll in September and October, said young Black Americans are more motivated than young people on average, second to white voters.

“Young Black Americans see 2020 as a chance to make an impact in the world and shape it for their own good … and move America toward justice and equality,” Tseng said.

Jacksonville, like many places in the South, has been shaped by race and racism. It is home to the state’s first historically Black college. Edward Waters College was founded in 1866 after the end of the Civil War to serve newly emancipated African Americans. Sixty years ago, a white mob attacked Black civil rights activists with ax handles, an event known as “Ax Handle Saturday.”

In an area once known as Durkeeville, where many African Americans lived and worked during segregation, local artists have turned a nearly block-long warehouse into a giant mural. Portraits of Black residents killed by gun violence run along one side, those of local activists cover another. A third side spells out, in huge block letters, “Black Votes Matter.”

The murals are part of Color Jax Blue, a project aiming to increase Black voter turnout. Shawana Brooks, the artist and curator who launched the project, has partnered with a food bank to offer free food and shuttle rides to an early voting site.

Brooks said her choice of blue for the mural backgrounds draws on the American flag and its symbolism of justice. It is an unfulfilled promise for Black Americans, she said, but the murals serve as a reminder for their community to empower themselves by voting.

“We wanted this to not only go up and be present for this time now, but thinking of five years later,” Brooks said, standing before the towering images. Pedestrians waved to the artists gathered with her; passing drivers honked greetings. “Black votes don’t just matter because it’s a national election. They matter because it’s a sense of nationalism that we have to make sure that we’re taken care of.”

How Capitalism Drives Cancel Culture

Beware splashy corporate gestures when they leave existing power structures intact.

Tumbrels are rattling through the streets of the internet. Over the past few years, online-led social movements have deposed gropers, exposed bullies—and, sometimes, ruined the lives of the innocent. Commentators warn of “mob justice,” while activists exult in their newfound power to change the world.

Both groups are right, and wrong. Because the best way to see the firings, outings, and online denunciations grouped together as “cancel culture,” is not through a social lens, but an economic one.

Take the fall of the film producer Harvey Weinstein, which seems inevitable in hindsight—everyone knew he was a sex pest! There were even jokes about it on 30 Rock! But it took The New York Times months of reporting to ready its first story for publishing; the newspaper was taking on someone with deep pockets and a history of intimidating critics into silence. Then the story went off like a hand grenade. Suddenly, the mood—and the economic incentives—shifted. People who had been afraid of Weinstein were instead afraid of being taken down alongside him.

The removal of Weinstein from his company, and his subsequent conviction for rape, is a good outcome. But the mechanism it revealed is more morally ambiguous: The court of public opinion was the only forum left after workplace protections and the judicial system had failed. The writer Jon Schwarz once described the “iron law of institutions,” under which people with seniority inside an institution care more about preserving their power within the institution than they do about the power of the institution as a whole. That self-preservation instinct also operates when private companies—institutions built on maximizing shareholder value, or other capitalist principles—struggle to acclimatize to life in a world where many consumers vocally support social-justice causes. Progressive values are now a powerful branding tool.

But that is, by and large, all they are. And that leads to what I call the “iron law of woke capitalism”: Brands will gravitate toward low-cost, high-noise signals as a substitute for genuine reform, to ensure their survival. (I’m not using the word woke here in a sneering, pejorative sense, but to highlight that the original definition of wokeness is incompatible with capitalism. Also, I’m not taking credit for the coinage: The writer Ross Douthat got there first.) In fact, let’s go further: Those with power inside institutions love splashy progressive gestures—solemn, monochrome social media posts deploring racism; appointing their first woman to the board; firing low-level employees who attract online fury—because they help preserve their power. Those at the top—who are disproportionately white, male, wealthy and highly educated—are not being asked to give up anything themselves.

Perhaps the most egregious example of this is the random firings of individuals, some of whose infractions are minor, and some of whom are entirely innocent of any bad behavior. In the first group goes the graphic designer Sue Schafer, outed by The Washington Post for attending a party in ironic blackface—a tone-deaf attempt to mock Megyn Kelly for not seeing what was wrong with blackface. Schafer, a private individual, was confronted at the party over the costume, went home in tears, and apologized to the hosts the next day. When the Post ran a story naming her, she was fired. New York magazine found numerous Post reporters unwilling to defend the decision to run the story—and plenty of unease that the article seemed more interested in exonerating the Post than fighting racism. Even less understandable is the case of Niel Golightly, communications chief at the aircraft company Boeing, who stepped down over a 33-year-old article arguing that women should not serve in the military. When Barack Obama, a notably progressive president, only changed his mind on gay marriage in the 2010s, how many Americans’ views from 1987 would hold up to scrutiny by today’s standards? This mechanism is not, as it is sometimes presented, a long-overdue settling of scores by underrepresented voices. It is a reflexive jerk of the knee by the powerful; a demonstration of institutions’ unwillingness to tolerate any controversy, whether those complaining are liberal or conservative. Another case where the punishment does not fit the offense is that of the police detective Florissa Fuentes, who reposted a picture from her niece taken at a Black Lives Matter protest. One of those pictured held a sign reading who do we call when the murderer wear the badge. Another sign, according to the Times, “implied that people should shoot back at the police.” Fuentes, a 30-year-old single mother to three children, deleted the post and apologized, but was fired nonetheless.

In the second group, the blameless, lies Emmanuel Cafferty, a truck driver who appears to have been tricked into making an “okay” symbol by a driver he cut off at a traffic light. The inevitable viral video claimed that this was a deliberate use of the symbol as a white-power gesture, and he was promptly fired. Cafferty is a working-class man in his 40s from San Diego. The loss of his job hit him hard enough that he saw a counselor. “A man can learn from making a mistake,” he told my colleague Yascha Mounk. “But what am I supposed to learn from this? It’s like I was struck by lightning.”

The phrase is haunting—not being racist is not going to save you if the lightning strikes. Nor is the fact that your comments lie decades in the past, or that they have been misinterpreted by bad-faith actors, or that you didn’t make them. The ground—your life—is scorched just the same.

It is strange that “cancel culture” has become a project of the left, which spent the 20th century fighting against capricious firings of “troublesome” employees. A lack of due process does not become a moral good just because you sometimes agree with its targets. We all, I hope, want to see sexism, racism, and other forms of discrimination decrease. But we should be aware of the economic incentives here, particularly given the speed of social media, which can send a video viral, and see onlookers demand a response, before the basic facts have been established. Afraid of the reputational damage that can be incurred in minutes, companies are behaving in ways that range from thoughtless and uncaring to sadistic. For Cafferty’s employer, what’s one random truck driver versus the PR bump of being able to cut off a bad news cycle by saying you’ve fired your “white-supremacist employee”?

Let’s look at another example of how woke capitalism operates. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, and the protests that followed, White Fragility, a 2018 book by Robin DiAngelo, returned to the top of The New York Times’s paperback-nonfiction chart. The author is white, and her book is for white people, encouraging them to think about what it’s like to be white. So the American book-buying public’s single biggest response to the Black Lives Matter movement was … to buy a book about whiteness written by a white person.

This is worse than mere navel-gazing; it’s synthetic activism. It risks making readers feel full of piety and righteousness without having actually done anything. Buying a book on white fragility improves the lives of the most marginalized far less than, say, donating to a voting-rights charity or volunteering at a food bank. It’s pure hobbyism.

Why is DiAngelo’s book so popular? Again, look at economics. White Fragility is a staple of formal diversity training, in universities from London to Iowa, and at publications including Britain’s right-wing Telegraph newspaper, as well as The Atlantic. The client list on DiAngelo’s website includes giant corporations such as Amazon and Unilever; nonprofits such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Hollywood Writers Guild, and the YMCA; as well as institutions and governmental bodies such as Seattle Public Schools, the City of Oakland, and the Metropolitan Council of Minneapolis.

In the United States, diversity training is worth $8 billion a year, according to Iris Bohnet, a public-policy professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School. And yet, after studying programs in both the U.S. and post-conflict countries such as Rwanda, she concluded, “sadly enough, I did not find a single study that found that diversity training in fact leads to more diversity.” Part of the problem is that although those delivering them are undoubtedly well-meaning, the training programs are typically no more scientifically grounded than previous management-course favorites, such as Myers-Briggs personality classifications. “Implicit-bias tests” are controversial, and the claim that they can predict real-world behavior, never mind reduce bias, is shaky. A large-scale analysis of research in the sector found that “changes in implicit measures are possible, but those changes do not necessarily translate into changes in explicit measures or behavior.” Yet metrics-obsessed companies love these forms of training. When the British Labour leader, Keir Starmer, caused offense by referring to Black Lives Matter as a “moment” rather than a movement, he announced that he would undergo implicit-bias training. It is an approach that sees bias as a moral flaw among individuals, rather than a product of systems. It encourages personal repentance, rather than institutional reform. Bohnet suggested other methods to increase diversity, such as removing ages and photographs from job applications, and reviewing the language used for advertisements. (Men are more likely to see themselves as “assertive,” she argued.) Here is another option for big companies: Put your money into paying all junior staff enough for them to live in the big city where the company is based, without needing help from their parents. That would increase the company’s diversity. Hell, get your staff to read White Fragility on their own time and give your office cleaners a pay raise.

This, however, would break the iron law of woke capitalism—better to have something you can point to and say “Aren’t we progressive?” than to think about the real problem. Diversity training offers the minimum possible disruption to your power structures: Don’t change the board; just get your existing employees to sit through a seminar.

If this is a moment for power structures to be challenged, and old orthodoxies to be overturned, then understanding the difference between economic radicalism and social radicalism is vital. These could also be described as the difference between identity and class. That is not to dismiss the former: Many groups face discrimination on both measures. Women might not be hired because “Math isn’t for girls” or because an employer doesn’t want to pay for maternity leave. An employer may not see the worth of a minority applicant, because they don’t speak the way the interviewer expects, or that applicant might be a second-generation immigrant whose parents can’t subsidize them through several years of earning less than a living wage.

All this I’ve learned from feminism, where the contrast between economic and social radicalism is very apparent. Equal pay is economically radical. Hiring a female or minority CEO for the first time is socially radical. Diversity training is socially radical, at best. Providing social-housing tenants with homes not covered in flammable cladding is economically radical. Changing the name of a building at a university is socially radical; improving on its 5 percent enrollment rate for Black students—perhaps by smashing up the crazy system of legacy admissions—would be economically radical.

In my book Difficult Women, I wrote that the only question I want to ask big companies who claim to be “empowering the female leaders of the future” is this one: Do you have on-site child care? You can have all the summits and power breakfasts that you want, but unless you address the real problems holding working parents back, then it’s all window dressing.

Along with anti-racism and anti-sexism efforts, LGBTQ politics suffers a similar confusion between economic and social radicalism. The arrival of Pride month brings the annual argument about how it should be a “protest, not a parade.” The violence and victimization of the Stonewall-riot era risk being forgotten in today’s “branded holiday,” where big banks and clothing manufacturers fly the rainbow flag to boost their corporate image. In Britain and the U.S., these corporate sponsors want a depoliticized party—a generic celebration of love and acceptance—without tough questions about their views on particular domestic laws and policies, or their involvement in countries with poor records on LGBTQ rights. Some activists in Britain have tried to get Pride marches to stop allowing the arms company BAE to be a sponsor, given its arms sales to Saudi Arabia, an explicitly homophobic and sexist state. When Amazon sponsored last year’s PinkNews Awards, the former Doctor Who screenwriter Russell T. Davies used his lifetime-achievement-award acceptance speech to tell the retailer to “pay your fucking taxes.” That’s economic radicalism.

Activists regularly challenge criticisms of “cancel culture” by saying: “Come on, we’re just some people with Twitter accounts, up against governments and corporate behemoths.” But when you look at the economic incentives, almost always, the capitalist imperative is to yield to activist pressure. Just a bit. Enough to get them off your back. Companies caught in the scorching light of a social-media outcry are ike politicians caught lying or cheating, who promise a “judge-led inquiry”: They want to do something, anything, to appear as if they are taking the problem seriously—until the spotlight moves on.

Some defenestrations are brilliant, and long overdue. Weinstein’s removal from a position of power was undoubtedly a good thing. But the firing of Emmanuel Cafferty was not. For activists, the danger lies in the cheap sugar rush of tokenistic cancellations. Real institutional change is hard; like politics, it is the “slow boring of hard boards.” Persuading a company to toss someone overboard for PR points risks a victory that is no victory at all. The pitchforks go down, but the corporate culture remains the same. The survivors sigh in relief. The institution goes on.

If you care about progressive causes, then woke capitalism is not your friend. It is actively impeding the cause, siphoning off energy, and deluding us into thinking that change is happening faster and deeper than it really is. When people talk about the “excesses of the left”—a phenomenon that blights the electoral prospects of progressive parties by alienating swing voters—in many cases they’re talking about the jumpy overreactions of corporations that aren’t left-wing at all.

Remember the iron law of woke institutions: For those looking to preserve their power, it makes sense to do the minimum amount of social radicalism necessary to survive … and no economic radicalism at all. The latter is where activists need to apply their pressure.

When someone gives something to us, it’s natural for us to want to return the favor. Reciprocity is part of being a complex social creature and part of the underpinnings of successful civilization. It’s no different in our spiritual paths. When the spirits, gods, nature gift us with knowledge, empowerment or even a good meal, we want to be able to say thank you in a formal manner.

This balance more important now than ever. For centuries we have done a lot of taking from nature and relatively little giving back. Of course, some things are hard to replace. We can’t exactly put oil back in the ground or easily remove the pollutants caused by its processing and burning. But it’s only been recently that we’ve made conscious efforts to replace at least some of what we take. In Oregon, for example, it’s been a law since 1972 that any landowner who cuts down trees for timber must plant more to replace them.

Still, the balance is far from equal. We still take far more than we give back, and what we do give is often tainted. Take food offerings, for example. It may seem pretty innocuous to make an extra plate of food after a ritual and leave it out “for the wildlife”. Some of what we eat is very bad for other species, though, and it doesn’t have to be the hyper-processed snack foods we favor. Onions are toxic for dogs and cats, and so any wandering domestic or feral animal would get sick if the dish you prepared contains even cooked onion. (Coyotes might also not fare so well.) Moreover, leaving food out teaches wild mammals to stop fearing humans and to become more aggressive in trying to get food from us. Predictably this leads to more animals having to be killed as nuisances or dangerous.

The source of the offering may also be suspect. Let’s say you want to leave a small quartz crystal next to a plant that you harvested leaves from for medicine. Where did the crystal come from, and how was it mined? What quality of life did the miner have and how much did they make for it? How many thousands of miles was the crystal shipped using fossil fuels? What offering did you make to the land the crystal was torn out of to say “thanks for the shiny rock”? And, finally, how exactly is the plant supposed to use a piece of quartz crystal when what it really needs is water and healthy soil?

We need to rethink the concept of offerings, and what we’re actually giving versus receiving. Are we giving back anything of actual value, or just contributing to more problems at home and abroad?

I’d like to offer some potential alternatives for those of us on a nature-based path. These are offerings that are more conscious of environmental impact and have a real, measurable effect on the land. (In my experience they also make the spirits of the land happier!)

–Take the time to really get to know the land you live on: How much do you know about your bioregion? What’s the geology that forms its foundation, and how does it affect the climate and weather? What animals, plants, fungi and other living beings share space with you there? What did it look like before large numbers of humans arrived? What did it look like 10,000 years ago? 100,000? 100 million?

Knowing these things helps you understand the intricacies of your bioregion and what it needs in order to be healthy. You may think that your area has a diversity of wildlife because you know a few species of bird in the area, but it may lack the necessary habitat to support more elusive animals. What happened to drive these other species away?

You may not be able to do anything about these bigger situations, but just being aware of and sensitive to them can be a great offering in and of itself. It shows you respect the land and the beings you share it with, and it helps push you out of the heavily anthropocentric mindset most humans have been running around with for too long.

–Offer your time: If you have the time and physical ability to do so, spend some time trying to improve the land around you. If there are local environmental or conservation groups working to remove invasive species and replace them with native ones, or monitor water and air quality, or other efforts toward habitat restoration and preservation, see what sorts of volunteer opportunities they have. Check the Citizen Science Alliance website to see if there are any nearby nature research projects you can help with. You can even do some self-directed projects, like keeping a particular park or stretch of stream litter-free.

Even if you don’t have the ability to do that sort of intensive outdoor work, consider contacting your elected officials about environmental issues in your area. The more you educate yourself about these issues, the more effective you can make your letters. You can even extend this communication to local business owners, encouraging them to implement sustainability efforts or transparency about pollutants in manufacturing activities.

Some of you may even have the opportunity to make your career more centered on nature. Degree programs in biology and other natural sciences offer the ability to do field research (though there can be competition for jobs and research opportunities!) Should you happen to be interested in law school, environmental law is a great way to utilize the legal system to hold polluters and other problematic entities accountable.

–Offer your money: You don’t have to tithe 10% of your income to your spiritual path, but even if you have just a few dollars extra, consider donating the funds to an environmental nonprofit that you trust. Local organizations are always looking for ways to pay for their projects, and this may be the best option if you’re trying to help your immediate bioregion. On the other hand, bigger organizations do a lot of valuable work ranging from buying up and protecting fragile ecosystems, to lobbying elected officials and convincing them to vote in favor of the environment.

Some utility companies are beginning to offer clean energy buy-in options to their customers, albeit at a little higher monthly rate. Instead of getting your electricity from coal, for example, you might be able to switch some or all of your electricity to wind or hydroelectric power. While these are not without their own problems, they’re an attempt to try to cut down on the reliance on fossil fuels. And the more people who demand cleaner energy, the more incentive there will be for companies to work out the flaws with wind, hydro, and other energy alternatives.

–Teach others: Social media has become a pretty significant powerhouse for activists of all sorts. You don’t have to be organizing marches against pollution, but you can use your social media network to share links about environmental issues. Don’t worry about making your contributions all news all the time, either. Even just passing on a few links in the middle of your usual roster of cat pictures, gripes about work, or “What I did this weekend” posts can make a big difference.

Looking back at the volunteering option for a moment, you might see if local organizations or national/state parks have opportunities for volunteer interpreters. These help visitors to parks and other wild places to learn more about the flora, fauna and other features of the land, and it’s a great way to inspire others to fall in love with your bioregion!

–Live more lightly on the planet: Look at your everyday life and see if there are ways you can live a greener life. This might involve spending a little more money to buy a couple of extra organic or pasture-raised food items, or toilet paper and paper towels made from recycled paper. Or it may mean switching over to public transit for your commute (which, by the way, makes for great reading time!) When you take a shower, catch the “warm-up” water in a bucket, and then use that to refill the toilet tank next time you flush. Use a 50-50 vinegar-water solution and some Bon Ami for house cleaning instead of harmful chemicals like bleach. Really, it all depends on what your financial and schedule situations are like, what resources are available to you, and what you can afford to change. Even if you just make one change a month, over time that all adds up.

And these offering ideas are just a few potential options. What else might you do to make effective offerings in a nature-based path?

A Trip to Antarctica! – I am Aileen

Back in the 60s, only a handful of travelers had the desire to go on a trip to Antarctica. After the success of that ship’s voyage, it inspired more tourist explorations and cruises to the white continent; in fact, nowadays, there are about 35,000 to 40,000 people who visit Antarctica every year! Surely, what was once an elusive place deemed as only for explorers and scientists has now become a dream destination for travelers who are looking to go off the beaten track.

Newsflash: I’m actually one of those people who have long dreamt of going on a trip to Antarctica. After all, I don’t think there is any other place on Earth that is similarly pristine, remote and unique. So naturally, if someone told me years ago that I will be making that dream come true this year, I would NOT have believed them.

That’s why I’m so stoked to announce that together with Hurtigruten, I am going on their 20-day expedition called as the Ultimate Antarctica Experience!

This collaboration has actually been decided since 2016… and of course, I have been dying to announce it since day one; but I decided to keep it all under wraps because I didn’t want to jinx it until everything was final. Thankfully, all the other arrangements are done with months ago and when I finally got my Argentina visa today, I’m now going ALL OUT with the announcements.

» The Triple ‘A’ Dream

I wrote this post back in 2015 and… I would have NEVER guessed that I would be checking off Antarctica FIRST before the other two. Truth be told, by the time I’ll step foot in Antarctica, it will be my 6th continent and that blows my mind a bit because I always thought that I would be declaring it as the last continent that I’ll have to conquer — but I guess not!

Now, some of you might be thinking, “Why Antarctica?” Well… simply put: because it is THE Antarctica!

Other than the reasons that I’ve already mentioned previously at the start of this article, it also helps to mention that I’ve dreamt of doing a trip to Antarctica ever since I was a child and it’s partly due to how I am a huge science buff. That being said, I’m looking forward to the kind of discussions and experiences that we will be doing during the sailing expedition with Hurtigruten. Of course this includes as well my interest for Antarctica’s wildlife called as “extremophiles” or species who can thrive in extreme conditions and they’re not limited to the south pole’s (cute!) penguins, whale seals, albatrosses, and whales among many others!

The pristine nature in Antarctica is naturally a given too, and I simply can’t wait to hike, kayak, polar plunge(!) and camp (if possible) as I get to witness dramatic icebergs, glaciers, lagoons, etc.

» Why I’m Going with Hurtigruten for a Trip to Antarctica

The 20-Day Itinerary: Ultimate Antarctica Experience

Most ships and vessels that make a trip to Antarctica depart from ports in places like Argentina, Chile, Falkland Islands, New Zealand, and South Africa. For this particular Hurtigruten expedition, it will depart from Buenos Aires, Argentina. If you’re curious how my 20 days will go, below is our rough itinerary as we explore both the Antarctic Islands and Antarctica itself.

NOTE: Since this is a remote destination, the weather, wind and ice conditions will determine our schedule. So during our voyage, the captain will have the final say on any changes or added activities that can be done. Either way, this just shows that every expedition with Hurtigruten is unique!

Day 1: November 26 ~ At the Birthplace of Tango Location: Buenos Aires

For this day, we are free to explore the city on our own. I will be flying from the Philippines with Emirates and arriving on the 25th so I guess by this time I will have enough energy to go around. Now, this will actually be the first time that I’ll step foot in South America, so as my ‘first’, please let me know if you have any tips or ‘things-to-do’ that I should not miss out on when in Buenos Aires by leaving a comment below. Day 2: November 27 ~ All Aboard at the “End of the World” Location: Ushuaia

Photo by Rita Melville / Hurtigruten On this day, we will board a flight to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires in the morning. We will embark on the MS Fram ship of Hurtigruten sometime later in the day to start our trip to Antarctica — so, we will have a few hours to explore parts of Ushuaia (a spot that’s not to miss is said to be the Tierra del Fuego National Park).

TRIVIA: Ushuaia is the southernmost town in the world. Because of this, it has been referred to as “El Fin Del Mundo” or the End of the World. Quite an ominous name, right? But it’s just a name of course and I can’t wait to witness the beauty that this place holds! .

Day 3: November 28 ~ Crossing the Drake Passage Location: The Drake passage

Photo by Karsten Bidstrup / Hurtigruten This is the start of our sailing expedition and we will set course for the Falkland Islands that is located 480 km (300 miles) east of the southern tip of Argentina, and approximately 1,000 km (600 mi) north of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica. During this time we will enjoy life on board whilst keeping a lookout for wildlife. We can even join their Expedition Team as they start their interesting lecture series to help us understand the region more.

If say so myself, another aspect of this day that I’m excited about (other than the fact that it’s the start of our time at sea) is that, apparently, crossing the Drake Passage can be quite an experience what with it being commonly referred to as the world’s roughest seas!

They say that it will depend on the weather if we will have a rough time or not — of course, I hope for the latter but I’ll prepare myself in case the former happens. I’m no stranger to rough seas though given that I’m born in an island, but I’ll never know. .

Day 4 to 13: November 29 to December 8 ~ Across Open Seas and Sub-Antarctic Islands Locations: Southern Oceans, Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Orkney

Photo by Dominic Barrington / Hurtigruten This Ultimate Antarctica Experience is regarded as an ‘ultimate’ thing after all, so along with this expedition, we will get to explore the Atlantic Islands too!

While we venture through the Southern Seas, we will first make a stop to the remote Falkland Islands which consist of 2 large islands and around 700 smaller ones (with a population of over 3,000 people only). In here, we will see immense colonies of albatross, rockhopper, king and macaroni penguins, caracas, and upland geese. Falkland Islands also has a historical capital called as Stanley, as well as stunning white sand beaches.

What follows after this location will be our first Antarctic island: South Georgia. This place has magnificent mountain scenery with glaciers and beaches teeming with wildlife — from elephant seals, fur seal pups, albatross and King penguins. We also plan to visit Fortuna Bay and some of South Georgia’s abandoned whaling stations.

Last stops before the great trip to Antarctica Peninsula will be the deserted South Orkney Islands which are a photographer’s dream due to its majestic snow-capped mountains, blue icebergs and endless wilderness. We will spend one day exploring these islands before sailing the Washington Strait to Coronation Island and Elephant Island. .

Day 14 to 17: December 9 to 12 ~ Pristine Antarctica Location: Antarctica

Photo by Esther Kokmeijer / Hurtigruten Finally, we will be arriving in Antarctica — a place dedicated to peace and science, and a place that has evolved through the millennia without human interference. As I’ve already mentioned, activities will depend on the weather but as opportunities arise we will always try to aim to launch our kayaks, pitch tents ashore, and go on unforgettable hikes to explore the most beautiful, untouched places in the area.

Throughout our stay, we will be exploring the West of Antarctica or commonly called as the Antarctica Peninsula. But on our way, we will also make stops to several nearby islands such as Deception Island, Half Moon Island, and Brown Bluff wherein we can witness various unique sceneries that are not limited to flat-topped bergs, beach sprinkled with lava “bombs”, rust-colored bluff, and so much more!

With all that said, there are also some other things that I’m excited for and which I hope we will be able to do: doing a polar plunge and stopping by Port Lockroy (to send postcards from!) for instance.

Anyhow, we will surely have days wherein we will be feasting our eyes on the various wildlife found in the peninsula and on the massive icebergs that are in striking blue colors. .

Day 18 to 20: December 13 to 15 ~ Back to Drake Passage and then Disembarkation Locations: Drake Passage, Ushuaia, Buenos Aires

After some magnificent days exploring Antarctica, MS Fram will start to head north as we make our way back to the South American continent. This will be the perfect time to fondly reminisce on our expedition and to attend sessions for recapping our Antarctica experience — after all, it will take us about 40 hours to reach Ushuaia in good weather.

Come the 15th of December, it will be the end of the adventure. We will make landfall back in Tierra del Fuego and then continue with a flight back to lively Buenos Aires. .

Participate and Observe

For my participate and observe project, I decided to sign up for an annual bird count survey conducted by Travis County Natural Resource Department. In this survey, I went out with a group of volunteers, and three biologists to do a bird count in the Balcones Canyonlands Natural Wildlife Refuge. Together we hiked from 5 am to noon counting how many, and the different types of birds we saw as we hiked through the preserve. We had a list of different common birds seen in the area, and different bird guides to aid us as we trekked through the woods. The data we gathered that day was going to be used by the biologists and other scientists to research the diversity of birds in the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, to assure that there is a healthy population of wildlife. It was a cool and brisk February morning with wind chills of 17 degrees Fahrenheit. It was difficult hiking through the preserve in that type of weather, but our love for the outdoors and wildlife kept us going. Although the morning was very cold, we still managed to see a vast diversity of different bird species brave enough to endure the cold with us. (If I was those birds that morning I would have stayed in my nest). I learned so much from this volunteer project, and met great people who do amazing works for the biodiversity of Central Texas, and the environment. I am glad to see that there are people so dedicated to the conservation of our natural resources and willing to endure the elements for the sake of nature and science.

I observed a great deal of leadership models in our survey as many people took leadership at different points during the hike. The biologists where the experts, but there was the lead biologist for Travis County, and the City of Austin who took control of our activities and guided us to new approaches throughout the day. Early in the morning, Paul had a goal in mind for each of us. He had a plan for the priorities, but at the same time wanted all of us to enjoy and have a good time. He showed signs of authentic leadership because he was genuinely passionate about the project, and wanted all of us to participate and find the passion in the mission of the project. He also demonstrated a transformational leadership approach, in that he had us working with the values he believed in, which were conservation projects and caring for wildlife. Since Paul knew that most of us where inexperienced with bird surveys, he made sure we knew general facts, and what steps to take to identify birds. Even if we didn’t know what the bird was, he wanted us to tell him, or the other two biologists, so they could identify it, and then he would take the time to teach us how to identify that specific bird. He would encourage us, and praise us when we would spot a bird, and he even made a small game that whoever could spot the most birds in 10 a ten-minute interval, he would buy our lunch. Although I did not win, it was still good to know that he was encouraging us to find birds, and actively participate, other than having us walking around without knowing what to do. It made us forget how cold it was since Paul kept the activity very engaging. I really enjoyed that Paul, and the other biologists where strategic and methodological when conducting the surveys. Even though we were having fun, they had organization in our bird counts. I oversaw writing down every new bird we saw on the pages we brought, another person oversaw counting, others were simply on the lookout, and some would go off on the distance alone, to not scare the birds, and take pictures of as much birds as they could. Then they would come back and show us their results. At the end, we compiled a pretty good list of different types of species, and we were all very proud. To top it all off, we saw four rare species, and three species that had never been observed on the preserve.

For my project, since we had to implement some type of leadership skill, I decided to take my friend Edgar and Alex out to the bird count with me. They had no previous experience hiking, and are not natural science majors. I wanted to show them my passions, and the things that I enjoy doing, so they understand why it is that I chose my major. They always ask me why I enjoy learning about our natural world, and are always curious about my major. At first, they were reluctant about waking up so early to go on the bird count, and to make it worse it was one of the coldest mornings of the year. However, they both ended up going with me, suffered in the cold, but at the end of the day they told me they had a lot of fun and enjoyed it. They did not know there were people so passionate about these things and were intrigued with how much work went on. Since I was the one who invited them on this adventure, I tried my best to be their leader and guide them through the woods. I made sure they were dressed properly, and made sure they knew safety rules before we started the hike. I taught them how to use the bird guides and told them the general history of the Balcones Canyonlands preserve system, and how important it is for Austin and the surrounding areas. They had no clue that this Preserve was designated to protect the endangered Golden Cheeked Warbler, and were so fascinated that Austin protected this bird. It was such a beautiful thing to see them so happy and intrigued learning about Central Texas nature. I believe I implemented a situational approach in that I tried teaching them and lead them through their perspective. I knew they had no previous knowledge about being outdoors for a prolong amount of time, and so I had to shape my leadership style to that situation. I shared the knowledge I had, and explained to them how we would go on through this project. I also believe I used a transformational approach because I revealed to them my passions, and lead them with respect, and demonstrated to them that I am also driven by a set of morals and believes. I cared about their safety, learning, and enjoyment, and wanted them to have an amazing and comfortable experience.

I really had no complaints about the leadership models I observed throughout the day in the bird count. I think if there was any weakness in the way the biologists handled the project, it would be that at times we would say the name of the bird, and that was about it. I would have liked to hear a little about the bird, as I have little to no experience with birds. I guess more context is what I am trying to say. As far as organization, and structure of the day however, they did a great job and I would not change a thing. They cared about our learning, and wanted us to get the most out of the experience. I want to do it all over again, that is how effective they were. I want to say that I also did a good job leading my friends, as they fell in love with hiking and the outdoors. One of them goes hiking at least once a week now, and enjoys finding different parks to go hiking. My other friend, although he did not like bird counting, likes hiking now, and even planned a camping trip for the three of us to go to during spring break. I am very proud to have shared this experience with them, and be able to lead them, so they understand why I am passionate about the environment, and I helped them find their love for nature as well. When Gandhi was doing his peaceful protests, he led with his morals, and genuinely cared about his followers. I felt that Paul and the other biologists did just this, and demonstrated to us their love for birds and wildlife, while I taught my friends appreciation for nature, and the importance of doing this type of work for the future of biodiversity and better quality of the environment. Something I also really enjoyed about this day was that at noon when we ended the bird count, we all got together and went out to eat lunch. During lunch, we all shared our favorite part of the bird count survey, and anything new we learned. It was nice to know that Paul wanted to hear feedback from all of us and wanted to see how he could improve the event for future bird counts. Again, with this, he demonstrated his passion of his work, and how motivated he is to teach others in effective, and engaging ways.

Participate & Observe

For my Participate and observe project I arranged a day for myself and a couple of friends to go clean up the Lady Bird Lake trail in Austin,Texas. We went on March 15, 2017 during our spring break. Some friends of mine came down from different parts of Texas to spend the week with their family and friends. I had asked them prior to spring break if they wanted to help me with a service project and they agreed. Myself and three of my friends helped pick up trash around Lady Bird Lake. As a leader I informed everyone where to go and what to pick up and how to dispose of the trash properly. Some of the trash could be recycled like bottle drinks, aluminum cans and cardboard...yes there was random cardboard in the park. 

As a leader I made sure I had plenty of supplies like gloves, white plastic bags for recyclable material and big black trash bags for the actual trash. I made sure that everyone had water as it was a hot day, especially once you start doing work you get hotter. My friend Sarah is scared of lizards and I totally understand phobias, so I made sure she focused on just the trail and stayed away from the grass. I ensured that everyone was doing okay every few minutes. As a leader I wanted to be as prepared as I could be to make this volunteering opportunity fun for them. Not only would they be doing a good thing, but Austin is such a beautiful city that the scenery made it enjoyable to do. 

Leadership is something used to empower people, inspire them, leads change and allows for shared visions. To be an effective leader you have to have a vision and have goals that will help you accomplish that vision. If you envision something and have a passion for whatever it may be, others will be more enthusiastic to help and follow your visions. That being said, I would characterize myself as a Transformational Leader. I have a vision to see the world as a better place, and in order for that to happen I must act and do something to make that happen. Ghandi once said “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” This is something I live by today. As an Environmental Science and Conservation major, it hurts me to see trash in locations other than in a trash can, or knowing that there is water contamination all over the world that inhibits people to have access to safe clean drinking water. I tried to inspire my fellow volunteers by informing them that helping with this service is making an big impact on our environment as well as the health of the community. I told them the importance of caring for the environment isn’t just so that the city looks clean and pretty, but for our own well being. I taught them that plastic materials are made with and contain hazardous chemicals that can make our community sick if they get into our water system, because plastics will melt in the heat and there is scientific evidence that supports how plastic can cause cancer by this. I also informed them that wildlife can die because they mistake plastic and other forms of trash as food which will build up in their body and kill them. If we do not have wildlife, us humans are more at risk for catching a disease because the wildlife that would consume insects and pests died causing these vectors to increase. I know I may be going off on a tangent, but I can back it up to leadership I promise. Me telling them this basic information, makes them aware of their surroundings and they will be more likely to clean up their mess or any mess they see. As a leader I believe a way to empower your people is to teach them new things each and every day. Whether its teaching them a new skill, giving them valid important information and facts that would be important for them to know, or even showing them how to step outside their comfort zone will flourish into knowledge that they will value and can pass on to others they know.

For one of our Who is blogs we had to talk about Gandhi. For those of you who don’t know who Mahatma Gandhi was, he was an Authentic leader in the 1930′s that led India’s independence movement when they were colonized from Britain. I want to bring him up again, because he is certainly someone we should learn from and aspire to lead the way he did.  In our leadership textbook, Northouse, Leadership Theory and Practice 7th edition, on pages 202-203 it talks about Authentic Leadership. You have to have a Relational Transparency, Balanced Processing, Internalized Moral Perspective and have Self Awareness. I will show what these words mean through Gandhi. He was an Authentic leader by being honest and open in presenting one’s true self to others (Relational Transparency) . He analyzed every situation and opinion with an open mind before making any decisions (Balanced Processing). He had a set of morals and values that he lived by that inhibited any outside influences to control him (Internalized Moral Perspective), and most importantly he was able to share his weaknesses and learn from his mistakes (Self Awareness).

As we gathered trash I would help my friends at different times and we would talk about random things. I mentioned earlier the reason I like to clean up parks and my friends were curious to learn more of my beliefs and values. By telling them what I believed in I showed Relational Transparency by being open and honest with them witch whatever questions or concerns they had. One of my friends named Alex wanted to know what I thought about President Trump. As this could be a touchy subject for one to talk politics, I was open and honest with what I believe. I told Alex that I was very upset when Trump won due to all the negativity and hate he seemed to bring along with his presidency. Mr.Trumps environmental plans were sickening and I was shocked that he didn’t see climate change as an issue. I also mentioned that this career field is very difficult, because there are so many people along with Trump who don’t see this as an issue and I have to learn to listen to their opinions regardless of what I know is right. This is the form of balanced processing. I mentioned that I am going to face difficult obstacles throughout my whole life because of this career, but I know in my heart it is our obligation to take care of this world so that my children and future generations can enjoy the beautiful things that this world has to offer. I have a moral obligation to do the right thing regardless if I will get paid or not. Telling them this made some of them realize that they have to fight for the things that they believe in. After I told them that I may get attacked for my beliefs I will not be easily influenced by anyone. This showed my internalized moral perspective. I admitted to them that although I may be an environmentalist, I am not perfect and there are a lot of things I don’t know in regards to the environment, which is my weakness. I don’t have a solution to climate change and as of right now no one does, but I am a hard worker and I will continue to strive to take care of the environment as much as I can. I have self awareness of the person that I am, but I will continue to work hard and improve as much as I can.

I also showed that I was a Servant Leader during this service project. I focused on the needs of everyone to make sure they were comfortable. I didn’t want them to get to hot and made sure everyone had water. I was picking up trash along with them. I got the chance to talk to each of them individually and ask them about their goals in life. I may not be studying the same things as them, but if they ever needed me for anything I would be there for them in a heartbeat. Working together is a beautiful thing, especially when a group of people work hard to accomplish a certain goal. 

My friends enjoyed cleaning Lady Bird Lake it was a nice bonding moment. My friend Sarah told me that she never realized how passionate I was about the environment until that day. She said that my passion, encouraged her to pick up as much trash as she could and that she had never thought about protecting the environment. My friend Brandon said that he picks up trash whenever he sees it on the ground thanks to me. Alex told me that when he comes back during the summer he wants to do that again. My friends telling me this made me happy. I organized this project for this class because it was an assignment, but it was very rewarding. I was glad knowing that my nagging throughout the day really impacted their lives, even if it was a little. I didn’t expect anyone to change and become a modern hippy as I like to call it. I just wanted them to be informed and aware of how important the environment is and how at the end of the day if the environment gets destroyed it will eventually recover itself, but it is us who won’t.  

I learned that being a leader is challenging because there are so many opinions in this world. I will continue to be the type of leader that crosses the finish line with my followers. I will continue to teach them new things as I will be open to hear any of their ideas and take them into consideration when making a decision. Being a successful leader is something that is earned through respect. You need to treat others the way you want to be treated. Help those who need it along the way, and be there to give support. Have a vision and be passionate about it will allow for others to work towards accomplishing the same goal.

The 'fight for Florida' is happening in this once-conservative stronghold

Davon Davis’ mother had reminded him constantly about voting. So on a recent Sunday the 20-year-old cast his first-ever ballot for president before dishing up wings and fries to voters at a Souls to the Polls event.

Two issues were key to Davis, a Jacksonville native who is starting college in January: the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice. President Trump has failed at both, he said.

“When he got coronavirus, he’s telling people, ‘Oh, don’t worry about it, it’s not all that bad,’” said Davis, who added that he was angry because his own family members are vulnerable. “Not everybody has the money to pay for things if they do get sick.”

After he voted, Davis worked the Souls to Polls event to encourage Black residents of this Atlantic Coast city, the state’s most populous, to vote early. His cousins and brothers, they’d all already cast their ballots, he said.

“Wasn’t a better time than now to vote with all that’s going on in the world,” he said. “It’s the perfect time.”

Young voters like Davis have helped turn Jacksonville’s Duval County into an unlikely battleground in a state crucial to the presidential election. Republicans have long counted on running up votes in the state’s conservative north to compete with Democratic strongholds in south Florida, and the last time Duval County chose a Democrat for president was 1976, when voters went for Georgian Jimmy Carter.

“Wasn’t a better time than now to vote with all that’s going on in the world,” said Davon Davis, a 20-year-old native of Jacksonville, Fla., who said he voted for Democrat Joe Biden.

But Duval’s ruby red shine has dulled over the years. And if Democrats hold their lead with early votes, experts say, the county that both parties see as pivotal could flip.

Trump, who needs Florida to win reelection, won some surrounding counties by more than 50 points in 2016, but Duval was much closer. And in 2018, the county voted for a Democrat for governor for the first time in decades.

An “Obama coalition” of young white and Black voters and Latinos helped boost the candidacy of Andrew Gillum, the state’s first Black gubernatorial candidate for a major party, said Sharon Austin, a University of Florida political science professor. Black Americans make up about 30% of the county’s population and 54% of its registered Democrats.

“Democratic candidates have a realistic chance in that county,” Austin said.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s choice of California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate has helped his pitch to Black voters, she noted. Harris, the first Black woman on a major party ticket, came to Jacksonville on the first day of in-person early voting in October. “A lot of people in Duval, especially in the Black community, really like her,” Austin said.

Democrats in Duval have doubled their lead to 6 points over Republicans in voter registration since 2016, said Michael M. Binder, director of the Public Opinion Research Lab at the University of North Florida. Of the 55% of active eligible voters who had cast their ballots as of Friday, Democrats held an early-vote lead of about 22,000.

“If the Black vote in Duval turns out, it’s not because Duval is special — it’s because Duval is reflective of the Black vote across the state and across the country,” Binder said.

More than 8.7 million Floridians had voted by Sunday morning, closing in on Florida’s 9.6 million total 2016 count, according to U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida. By Friday, nearly 200,000 more Black voters had cast ballots than at the same time in the 2016 election, and that includes an increase in those under 29, said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of the BlackPAC. In previous elections, Black votes were left on the table in north Florida because of a lack of voter outreach. This year, voters are determined — “People are angry about what is happening in the country,” she said.

Steve Schale, a Florida Democratic strategist, said views of the state’s politics often discount Black voters in the north. “People’s impressions of Florida are always wherever they’ve been,” Schale said. “They think of Disney World, they think of African American voters, they think of Miami or Fort Lauderdale. And people forget, nearly 25% of registered African American voters in Florida live all in the I-10 corridor from Jacksonville to Pensacola.”

Schale, who led Obama’s 2008 campaign efforts in the state and runs a pro-Biden PAC, likes the way Duval is headed. On Tuesday, he wrote: “Unless something really goes south, Joe Biden is going to win Duuuuval.”

When Trump won the county in 2016 by only about 6,000 votes, Republicans noted it as unusual, said Dean Black, current chairman of the Duval GOP. Democrats Gillum and then-Sen. Bill Nelson went on to lose in their 2018 midterm elections, but the fact that both captured Duval came as a shock, Black said.

“In elections that are this close, every county in Florida is very important,” Black said in an interview from the party’s office in downtown Jacksonville. But Duval, he believes, will be pivotal. “The fact that Democrats have poured such a high level of resources into this county, year after year after year, they have made it a strategic focal point in the fight for Florida.”

Since Black became chairman at the end of 2018, the Republican Party opened several field offices, recruited more than 1,000 volunteers, and most recently knocked on 50,000 doors in a week. He described it as “an unprecedented ground game for Duval County” to compete with Democrats.

The Trump campaign has also focused on the county. Jacksonville, led by GOP officials, was briefly scheduled to host the Republican National Convention until the coronavirus outbreak worsened in the state. Trump rallied in Jacksonville in late September, and his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was in town last month. The campaign also opened a Black Voices for Trump office in northern Jacksonville, aiming to chip away at the Democratic base.

On Thursday, a county judge who served as chairman of the vote-counting board, which reviews and decides which rejected ballots should count, resigned from the panel after the Florida Times-Union reported he donated several times to the president and had multiple Trump signs in his yard, violating judicial and canvassing board rules.

Closer to the coast in Duval, Trump signs and flags become more apparent in yards and on trucks and boats. Gabe and Maria Goodman went to the Beaches Branch Library on a Sunday afternoon to cast their votes for Trump. The Neptune Beach couple said they believe the president dealt with the pandemic as best he could and deserved another four years.

“I think he’s handled it better than any Democrat president could have thought of handling it,” Gabe said.

White, retired voters like the Goodmans helped deliver Trump the state in 2016. But the president is struggling with the group amid the pandemic.

If there is one thing Republican leader Black and Daniel Henry, chairman of the Duval County Democratic Party, agree on, it’s their county’s role in the election.

“Duval will decide who the next president of the United States will be,” Henry said. Jacksonville residents are, on average, younger than those in other metropolitan cities like Miami, and he believes young African American voters “will have a huge impact in this election.”

Nonpartisan groups like My Vote Project have ramped up efforts to increase turnout among Black voters. On Sundays leading up to election day, churches participated in Souls to the Polls events to turn out their congregations in Jacksonville.

In interviews with about a dozen Black voters in Jacksonville, all said they voted or planned to vote to get Trump out of office.

On a Saturday afternoon, soon after rapper Common appeared at a Free the Vote event, friends Justin Lane, 22, and Tre Hall, 23, walked over the nearby early polling site, where Lane cast his vote for Biden.

“It’s on us to make a change,” he said, wearing his “I voted early!” sticker. “I have to show that as a young Black male, I understand that I am the future, and I do want to make a change for the better.”

After 2016, Hall said people at his church urged him and others to give Trump an opportunity to be a good president. “We gave him a chance for four years and he didn’t really show me anything,” said Hall, who voted for Biden on Monday.

Biden’s favorability among young Black voters is higher than with white or Latino youths, according to the latest Harvard Youth poll of voters ages 18 to 29. Justin Tseng, chair of the Harvard Public Opinion Project, which conducted the poll in September and October, said young Black Americans are more motivated than young people on average, second to white voters.

“Young Black Americans see 2020 as a chance to make an impact in the world and shape it for their own good … and move America toward justice and equality,” Tseng said.

Jacksonville, like many places in the South, has been shaped by race and racism. It is home to the state’s first historically Black college. Edward Waters College was founded in 1866 after the end of the Civil War to serve newly emancipated African Americans. Sixty years ago, a white mob attacked Black civil rights activists with ax handles, an event known as “Ax Handle Saturday.”

In an area once known as Durkeeville, where many African Americans lived and worked during segregation, local artists have turned a nearly block-long warehouse into a giant mural. Portraits of Black residents killed by gun violence run along one side, those of local activists cover another. A third side spells out, in huge block letters, “Black Votes Matter.”

The murals are part of Color Jax Blue, a project aiming to increase Black voter turnout. Shawana Brooks, the artist and curator who launched the project, has partnered with a food bank to offer free food and shuttle rides to an early voting site.

Brooks said her choice of blue for the mural backgrounds draws on the American flag and its symbolism of justice. It is an unfulfilled promise for Black Americans, she said, but the murals serve as a reminder for their community to empower themselves by voting.

“We wanted this to not only go up and be present for this time now, but thinking of five years later,” Brooks said, standing before the towering images. Pedestrians waved to the artists gathered with her; passing drivers honked greetings. “Black votes don’t just matter because it’s a national election. They matter because it’s a sense of nationalism that we have to make sure that we’re taken care of.”

Bird bachelorette research may yield crucial answers to zoo animals' survival

Up four flights of stairs and in a remote corner of Brookfield Zoo's Tropic World, a version of "The Bachelorette" TV show is unfolding.

This one features a tropical bird, the female blue-gray tanager, perched in a large enclosure. Lining one side of her cage are three separate enclosures. Each contains a male tanager who can see the female but is blocked by wire mesh from having conjugal relations with her. Cameras are trained on the scene for hours a day.

Whichever male she spends the most time in front of will become her mate. No romantic rendezvous in an Argentine vineyard or stroll through a floating market in Thailand. No red rose.

This is scientific research, but the vagaries of romance are in the air, too. So is the hope that the research could revolutionize breeding practices of many species at institutions around the world and help resolve one of zoos' biggest challenges: sustaining their populations.

"By taking this different approach, what we're looking at is trying to increase the welfare of the animals and their breeding success," said Tim Snyder, curator of birds for the Chicago Zoological Society, which runs Brookfield. He stood in the zoo's Feathers and Scales exhibit one Monday morning. Tropical birds flitted overhead. Exotic calls filled the air.

The bigger idea, Snyder and Chicago Zoological Society Senior Director of Animal Welfare Research Lance Miller said, is to use techniques distilled from the bird bachelorette experience to develop a strategy that could be extended to all birds, reptiles, mammals and other animals in captivity.

Kevin McGowan, an ornithologist at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, where he focuses on the social behavior of birds, said he appreciates that thinking. He also recognizes the less scientific component of the research.

"We're all in favor of true love," said McGowan, who is not involved in the research. "Anything we can do to promote true love among birds, especially around Valentine's Day, is a good thing."

In the wild, female birds generally choose their mates after courtship displays from both sexes, but it's unclear exactly what traits the females like, McGowan said.

Sometimes choice seems based on appearance — perhaps a longer tail, bigger crest or brighter colors, he said. The viability of nesting in an area a male has staked out also seems to play a role, McGowan said.

At zoos and similar institutions, almost all animal breeding, including that for birds, is based in science and crunched numbers. Experts review genetic data, enter it into a database then use software to come up with the best pairings that will preserve genetic diversity.

It is the animal equivalent of an arranged marriage and is very efficient.

But chemistry is not part of the equation. And laboratory research with rodents suggests that giving the female more of a choice could be a natural way to maintain genetic diversity while increasing pregnancy rates, litter sizes and offspring survival. Other research with Gouldian finches indicated that females in arranged pairs with males showed increased stress and compromised reproduction.

In his proposal to obtain funding for the research, Miller wrote that allowing animals to choose their mates may yield greater compatibility, which could lead to "improved parental care."

All those factors could combine to yield solutions to the challenge of sustaining populations in zoos and aquariums, a problem that the Association of Zoos & Aquariums tracks back to a lack of animal space in the institutions and one that was highlighted in a 2011 report for the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The report found that about 40 percent of "cooperatively managed populations" in association institutions had decreased in five years. A total of 34 percent of the bird populations had dropped in that time, the report stated.

A report by the association one year later made a similarly dire prediction.

"Unless a group of zoos is deeply committed to a given species, including sharing the specialized space required for breeding, rearing young, recruitment, dispersal and, of course, caring for the old and feeble, it will become impossible to achieve demographic and genetic viability," the report, "Where Will Zoo Animals Come From?" stated.

One effort to address the issue is the Conservation Centers for Species Survival, a consortium of five organizations that together manage more than 25,000 acres for endangered species study, management and restoration. Established in 2005, the centers are conducting research on cheetahs that resembles Brookfield's work with birds.

Also, the Population Management Center, which helps zoos across the U.S. by providing demographic and genetic analyses of animalsas well as breeding and transfer plans, among other services, is based at Lincoln Park Zoo.

In addition to blue-gray tanagers, Brookfield's six-month study includes red-capped cardinals. Both species are abundant and found in northern regions of South America and, in the case of the tanager, in Central America, as well. Miller said the project, funded by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, Chicago Zoological Society-Brookfield Zoo and the St. Louis Zoo, "will easily be over $100,000."

A total of 50 birds divided evenly between both species will be used. Five females from each species will be fitted with radio frequency leg bands and have their locations tracked over five days. Once the females make their choice and are paired with males, their behavior and that of those genetically matched couples will be monitored by video.

Researchers also will count the number of eggs laid and hatched as well as the number of nestlings that reach fledgling age — a critical sign of reproductive success. In addition, they will examine female fecal samples for hormones that indicate stress levels. Pairs will be maintained for the entire six-month breeding season, during which each species typically lays two clutches.

By the time it ends and all the data and observations are processed, Miller and Snyder should have an indication of what effect female choice has on bird species sustainability, maybe some insight into the mystery of attraction and perhaps the key to solving a stubborn problem facing zoos.

"What I really like about this project," Miller said, "is it's using science to help animal management. Any time we can use science to better understand animal care and provide high levels of animal welfare, that's ultimately going to be in our best interest."
