Ahhh I do have so much with them, a whole book! One day I hope I can do something with them haha. But you can look at this old inktober zine where I used the challenge as an excuse just to explore the characters and setting.

I actually have a full 40 page pilot short story with these characters and. It's all penciled, though I only really finished 8 pages for the pitch. The story has changed a lot since then, but I'm still really fond of those pages. I wonder if I could put it together as a zine or something.

Look to windward

I know people talk about the novel, and about the phrase itself, and fairly so because it does work with ideas and motifs that just fit with everything, but please don't dismiss the poem where the title of the novel comes from.

Because T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land is also a possible source of inspiration to consider, alongside the aforementioned two. I wouldn't put past Vessel to have all as such, because there are aspects that just fit.

There are five sections to the poem, it's not terribly long, if you have 10 free minutes just go and read it. If you have a bit more time, spare a few more and think on it as well.

The five sections are the following (i won't analyse them because we'd be sitting here till next morning but just have them here as bullet-points mostly.)

I. The Burial of the Dead

The poem literally starts with the image of renewal of nature in the spring:

April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.

I'm not going to go through all the section and analyse the whole thing, so i'll just put the others here but if you read them, there are also ideas and subjects in those that connect in ways.

II. A Game of Chess III. The Fire Sermon

IV. Death by Water

Guess which one "look to windward" is coming from. Yes, this 4th part is the section specifically where Banks' book takes it's title from. The one called Death by Water.

It's the shortest part, where the central character is already passed and his body is stuck in a whirlpool. Basically an allegory of the cycle of death and life.

And as for closing it out..

V. What the Thunder Said

This last section is starting out with:

After the torchlight red on sweaty faces After the frosty silence in the gardens After the agony in stony places The shouting and the crying Prison and palace and reverberation Of thunder of spring over distant mountains He who was living is now dead We who were living are now dying With a little patience

It might just be me, but... you know.. [vaguely gestures towards the text]

All i'm saying is, especially as someone who read Look to Windward and liked it as much as the next sci-fy enjoyer, please don't skip over the poem either when considering possible inspirations for the song title. These things can come from multiple sources at once and we have not heard the song nor read the lyrics.

My snakes fully understand how the camera works and will sometimes stop what they are doing to watch it back. Scoria was playing but when I started watching her she came over right underneath it to look up at it.

They learned long ago the camera can summon me and can be used to ping me when I'm home if I have my phone in my pocket. It makes me sad to think she knows I'm watching her when the camera clicks on, wondering if today she'll see me and we can play again.

Not understanding why I don't come scoop her up and snuggle her and love her to pieces.

I know she knows I'm watching her. I'm sure she misses me too. Just the look she has.

This is only temporary baby. Something I have to do for our family to make it.

I love you more than words can say.

Ok so here's how I downgraded my Tumblr app to get rid of the annoying Tumblr TV (on mobile at least, since I don't use my computer very much)

Sorry if I explained this horribly! I'm not the best at explaining things like this (⁠；⁠^⁠ω⁠^⁠）

- First, uninstall Tumblr

- Next, go here

It'll look like this:

There are a bunch of older versions of Tumblr on here, pick whatever you'd like. I went with this one though - you can go even older if you want!

I didn't know which version had Tumblr TV and which ones didn't so I was downloading constantly, finding TV was still there, going 1 down the list, downloading, it's still there, go down the list again, etc. Until I found a version that didn't have it ┐⁠(⁠‘⁠～⁠`⁠;⁠)⁠┌

This website is also an app, as when you download a version it'll ask to install an unknown app. You will have to hit allow. Chrome kept screaming at me over and over so you will have to hit allow a lot when you want to download things from here. Rest assured, it's reliable and won't give you a virus.

I promise

It'll look like that in your apps, and it'll also show you what version of Tumblr you have in your app settings (I only have Android, no clue if any of this will work for anyone else)

Essentially, go to the website. Download the version you want (check what version you have right now so you can go below that one). You'll have to hit allow download, chrome will say it's dangerous, but it's fine. If I remember correctly the website will ask to download their app so you can download Tumblr off it. Chrome will pop up and say this is blocked, you will have to go and allow this in your settings. Then it'll redirect you to the app. Then it's pretty much the website all over again. Download whatever version you want. Tumblr will automatically reinstall when you download a version, no worries! You will have to sign in again

If you find your don't like the version you downloaded, uninstall Tumblr again and redo the whole process but with another version.

It's free! It's safe! And it doesn't take long. Tumblr will immediately try to get you to update the app when you download an old version, ignore it and the banner will go away eventually
