DATV explaining the 'Regret Prison'
Tumblr media
A REGRET PRISON IS STUPID AND I'M TIRED OF PRETENDING THAT ITS NOT
TL;DR: a prison can serve as a metaphor but it shouldn't be entirely comprised of a metaphor.
From what I understood from what the game gave us: Solas has made a new prison to move the God's too - since bringing down the veil would free them from the Black City. This new prison is separate(?) from the fade or so far removed/contained that bringing down the veil would not compromise it...apparently. We interrupt his ritual, Solas gets sucked into the new prison he made, and the elven gods are free.
When Rook gets kicked into the fade they're physically there - which means it's a physical place in the fade, like how it was a mixture of physical/thought when we entered it in DAI. Which makes sense - the gods are real and living beings, they need to be in a place, there must be some aspect of physicality to it.
Alright, cool, it's a Black City 2.0 - I assume it's better defended to prevent people breaking in/out again?
NOPE.
We get there and it's a 'regret prison'?? It's tied to the regrets of those within it? Composed of regrets??? Solas had to wait for the right moment for Rook to be sufficiently 'full of regret' that they could switch places?
So is the prison tied to Solas's regrets? If so, how can Rook escape? The prison seems to work around the idea that it relies on the regrets of the person it's holding to work - which is how/why Rook was able to be trapped and later free themselves (along with whatever remains of the team apparently being able to do something on their end, not that we hear about it).
WHICH IS STUPID!
Are you telling me the prison intended to hold to megalomaniac elven gods was going to imprison them based on their own regrets? Is Solas assuming that Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain are as self-pitying as he is? They'd break out quicker than Rook did! He made a time out corner for the elven gods to sit in and gave them an out if they reflected on their emotions/regrets or decided that they don't regret what they did. Elgar'nan, a spirit of tyranny, is not going to 'regret' his actions - he is going to justify them by telling himself and others that he knows what's best.
We can come across some of Solas's regrets in the prison if you run around a bit and explore:
Remnant of Failure - talking about the orb from Inquisition.
Remnant of Parting - talking about Mythal
Remnant of Reflection - more vague, talking about the Titans I believe.
So maybe he altered it - maybe he intended the prison to be 'locked' with his own regrets because after a millennia of having a pity party he still can't bring himself to self-reflect and look to the future. But what if Solas died? Or if his guilt lessened - would it diminish the strength of the regret prison?
We already have pre-established lore (though DATV has shown they don't really give a crap tbh) that once the being that has claimed/altered an area of the fade is slain, it's influence diminishes both in and outside of the fade. So if the prison was tied to his regrets then it would require Solas to basically live forever to keep it stable - especially if he brought down the veil and removed the one barrier that kept the world and the fade apart.
Rook and Solas needed some assistance to exit - but it doesn't seem like it was much! Solas used his dagger and Rook just...got out through a fade tear? This is Solas's 'more secure' second prison? It has a worse track record than the Black City! If Rook - who is not an elven god - managed to escape the regret prison what is to stop anyone else from breaking in and out of the prison?
And what did Solas intend to do with the blight - the bulk of which is apparently in the black city?? If bringing down the Veil would free the gods in the black city doesn't that mean that the blight would also be released?! Did he have a plan? Why does he go fully ahead with bringing down the veil at the end if the black city is still there and filled with blight?!
I get it: the 'regret prison' is a metaphor for how Solas holds onto the past and how Rook can move past their regrets and grow. He's trapped by the past - it's a prison. Cool. But this prison is supposed to by a physical place to contain the gods - not just to solely contain Solas. The mission is literally called 'A Cage for Gods'.
The Black City is an actual place that's so far out of reach of anywhere else in the fade that no mage can ever reach it while in dreams - let alone physically, which was only done once and took tremendous effort/blood sacrifices. It made sense - it was cool to see floating in the sky in DAO!
Though it's not said specifically, it's strongly implied that Arlathan is the Black City. You can see in the concept art that floating elven city is exactly the same as the black city in DAO! It's this foreboding thing just lurking in the sky - a constant reminder of the sin that led to the horrors of the blights and darkspawn. A real place with lore and history that also serves as a metaphor for the hubris and destruction of those who call themselves gods and act as tyrants -> for both the evanuris and the magisters.
I WANT TO UNDERSTAND THIS BIOWARE!
WHAT IS THIS KINGDOM HEARTS NONSENSE???!!
#we'll need Mickey and Donald to break us out of this one#this screams 'this sounds so cool lets put it in' and not 'how can we do something cool that works with the world we've established'#“it's metaphorical-” it can be metaphorical and make sense!!!#trying to invoke 'emotion' with that black and white tone and only succeeded in getting me to feel pure confusion and rage#THE FADE IS GREEN TINTED - THE LAST GAME WAS LITERALLY COLOUR THEMED AFTER IT#i'm passionate about the fade being green the same way i'm passionate about Aurora's dress being blue and Cinderella's being silver#solas's more secure second prison literally has a worse track record than the black city - why is he so dumb???#I regretted no choices in datv besides the decision to actually play this game lmao#if the game actually acknowledged that Rook's actions led to thousands of people dying maybe I'd feel something in the regret prison#no mention of treviso/ minrathous/ or southern thedas??#the team all knew the risks of what they were doing! they volunteered/made their own choices - ME2 did this so much better#played as an elf so I didn't even feel bad when Harding died because of the weird elf specific dialogue she had#I'm not sorry for the titans/what Solas did - I wasn't even there! Doesn't justify the shit that happened to the elves after either!#this game made me apathetic to LACE HARDING and i loved her in Inquisition#i'm sorry but I had more regret for choosing to speak mean to Merrill once than anything I did in this game#currently writing about the magisters sidereal in my lore post and I needed to blurt this out because its so stupid#typed out the word 'regret' so much is has no meaning in my head anymore lmao#datv critical#datv spoilers#bioware critical#dragon age the veilguard#veilguard critical

@megacharizardx99
I was gonna initially just leave this as a reply but I'll probably exceed the word limit, but I like this question! This is a good question :]
Honestly with it being this early on in Batman's career, and with Nightingale being the designated emergency support, I can pretty confidently say that Danny's relationship with the other Rogues ranges from neutral to dislike, and vice versa. Just by virtue of it being really early on in all of their careers and thus Rogues like Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn and stuff, haven't had the character development to otherwise be someone worth, eh, well, liking.
Nightingale's role as 'emergency only' means that he's really not seen that often. Bruce is a pretty master escape artist so for him to get in a situation that requires Danny to feel like he needs to step in is rare.
I haven't gotten Nightingale's persona completely set in stone yet, I'm still bouncing around with ideas, but the current gist I've got for him is that he's honestly pretty quiet. He's not there to engage in a fight or banter, he physically can't; he's there to aid the Batman and that usually means subterfuge, sabotage, psychological tricks, to just straight up shooting people with tranq darts depending on his mood that day.
The Nightingale posts I have here are hyperbolic and a bit exaggerated for my own amusement and entertainment, albeit still reflective of what I'm thinking of for the fic. The post this comment came from is a special case in that it was a joke idea I came up with and felt like sharing. It might show up in fic, just in a different format.
With that being said, from the POV of the Rogues, it means that the Batman has this protective little shadow that will pop up at random and either enact psychological warfare on them (distract them long enough for Batman to free himself), break their stuff (make it easier for Batman to free himself), or straight up shoot them with a tranquilizer, and you never really know which it will be until it's happening. Sometimes its all three.
Sometimes its neither of them; sometimes its him freeing Batman without ever making his presence known. One moment the Bat was trapped, the next he's not.
I don't think they even learn what his name is for a while either. He's probably just called smth like 'the Shadow' until people find out his name is Nightingale.
Safe to say though, the Rogues don't like Batman's little shadow that much, and even if he doesn't show up, he invokes this unwilling paranoia in a lot of them whenever they have him trapped. Besides, he's associated with Batman, the guy who keeps trying to stop them, that makes Nightingale a hated figure on principle.
As for Danny's opinion on the Rogues, I don't think there's any of them that he necessarily likes. Sympathizes with, sure, but not like. Folks like Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy and Babydoll fall under his 'cool motive, still murder' banner, where yeah he gets where they're coming from, but that doesn't excuse the harm they're doing. While folks like Black Mask, the Penguin, or Joker, fall under his 'what an asshole' banner, where he doesn't like them just for the obvious reasons of they're hurting people for power.
He probably likes Catwoman honestly, but her main profession is also thief not murderer so she has that going for her.
I don't think he'd have any special opinions on the other ghost characters. They're ghosts; water is wet, fork found in kitchen.
But yeah, as of the timeline right now Danny's opinion on the Rogues and vice versa are what you'd expect. He's not in the field often enough to form a relationship with any of them beyond the normal one, and considering his schtick is "you made Batman need my help" he's not particularly inclined on changing it. Child ghosts can be so protective yk, especially clingy little traumatized ones with separation anxiety.
#danny fenton is not the ghost king#dpxdc#dpxdc crossover#dp x dc#dpdc#dp x dc crossover#dpxdc au#blood blossom au#i did look it up and see if catwoman has murdered people before and it looks like she has in some comic runs but the general consensus#of her character is that she's a nonlethal Rogue. which already puts her miles above the others in Danny's book. which is funny bc i dont#even particularly care for catwoman that much. im pretty neutral on her. i dont think danny would *adore* her or anything but he does like#her and i can see him telling Bruce to tell her he said hi later down the road.#i didnt mention it in post bc frankly i didnt have a good spot to but in WTNS Danny isn't even friends with any of *his* rogues.#well no thats a lie. i've entertained the idea of him being friends with youngblood. but thats about it honestly. its hard to like the same#people who keep attacking you and your city for their own selfish reasons. There's mutual respect for sure just by virtue of time but#they're not friends. Danny's fights in WTNS were vicious and painful because the people coming through the portal weren't *good* people.#they're not people he wants to associate with and i can't see him getting along w/ them anyways just coz their morals are so different#i didnt mention harley bc i think that's a bit of a slippery slope and it falls under the 'later down the road' line where i think danny#might get along with her later on after she goes through her breakup with the Joker and has that anti hero arc. bc yeah she was manipulated#she still murdered people. people are dead because of her. he's more focused on her actions than her mindset because that's what important#in the end. same thing for poison ivy and everyone else. at the end of the day its their actions that speak louder than words.#and he's learned to watch the way people move their hands than the way they move their mouths.

really do not think people understand the extent to which palestinian sites/landmarks (especially muslim ones) were destroyed, beginning in 1948 until now, even in cities. the oldest extant mosque in jaffa (al-bahr mosque) was built in 1675, even though islam came there in the 7th century

touchstarved update thoughts (spoilers ahead)
aka how did Redspring think that springing a deletion of an origin people already enjoyed with this new one, was a good idea?
Because I cannot see this as being the step to make the third route more popular. That would be one of the only thoughts I have to completely remove an origin from the story.
Does anyone have any insight from Patreon maybe? Discord?
Not only did it seem to be a move out of nowhere, in all of the dev updates, I don't recall there being any kind of notice to any of the kickstarter backers that there would be a complete removal and overhaul of one of the backgrounds. It was also upsetting to learn this as soon as the update went live.
Especially for an origin that does not seem to fit with the setting in the slightest.
Somehow, we're expected to believe that someone who has been living in some forests, who just had a single person to rely on, has skills that are relevant in an urban environment? Or has any kind of context for this environment? Or even how to deal with others?
The Exile has lived away from civilization (like the bustling and most cutthroat city, Eridia the game takes place in) long enough to know all about Soulless behaviors (not that it helps when actually confronted with Soulless or gives any kind of insight) but somehow knows multiple languages (????) and can get a gut feeling on certain dangers (like that isn't a common skill.)
The other routes have clear lines of relation to major points in the story, the Hound seemed to at least know how to navigate the environment we would be dealing with and the monsters (Monsters, Soulless, and people) we would be interacting with in Eridia.
In comparison, nothing about the Exile synergizes with the setting, none of the skills seem applicable as written, and even worse, I do not believe for a second the Exile's competency or capacity in dealing with a city let alone The City, Eridia.
And the one time that the Exile's skills may come into play, trying to fight the Soulless, it's a bad end and a game over (I guess the death scene that was traded for Vere's former bad end.) The Exile seems to have no applicable skills for them to help themselves in the story, is somehow the MOST sheltered of the origins, and least suited to the current setting.
Was the Hound too savvy for the world? Did their skills overlap too much with Mhin's (even though that could have been corrected if not for now the Exile taking Mhin's specialization on Soulless) or Ais'/Leander's? Were they not sheltered enough?
I'm just so disappointed in being ambushed by the loss of my favorite origin and doubly so when in its place is something that should probably be avoided instead.

Prompt 262
Pondering Ghosts are Dragons, and just rotating each design in my head I have for them. That is the ghosts we see in the show more than just once or twice lol. Just pondering each of them and potential types and descriptions and how the people of Amity see them, as they’re used to the dragons around, vs say someone from Outside, crossover or no, who are Not used to the maybe slightly eldritch undeath interdimensional dragons around everywhere.
That is not normal for other people.
To the Amity Parkers? Boxy is simply a chonky dragon with small boxy wings and covered in blue scales. To people just coming into the city, it’s like seeing a giant komodo dragon when you’re just walking home- not something you exactly want to see and something that is dangerous.
Kitty’s and Johnny’s weekly relationship tussle? Par for the course really. But to visitors? Two giant wyverns tearing into each other, shimmering greens that could be scales, could be tendrils, and shadows lengthening and thrashing like a living beast all its own.
And this is just the small dragonlings, not even beginning with larger ones like Pandora and Fright Knight, chill as they may be.
Outsiders don’t understand that they’re more than just animals. Amity is used to this, but people who have no clue what’s going on? They don’t.
They call the police, the heroes, the government, for help, for answers. And that? That the GIW can use.
