my thoughts + spoilers under the cut :3

• giger would be so proud of this film. so yonic. so phallic. my god. Every vagina shaped thing gave way to the most sinister form of life. Every penis shaped thing was violently penetrating. Super duper leans into the original underlying themes of SA. got under my skin like crazy

• this film combined all my favourite elements of alien (slow burn immersive horror), aliens (great action) and resurrection (human/xeno hybrid) I literally cannot fault it at all

•the offspring (babymorph as me and my bf dubbed it) BAD BAD SO BAD THROWING UP IN MY MOUTH I was legit shaking and had tears in my eyes I have never been so close to screaming in a cinema. 1000/10 creature design. I knew something horrific and fucked up was gonna happen after the pregnancy reveal but JESUS

• Andy's actor was AMAZZINNNGG. The way he played "regular" Andy vs "evil fuckass weyland-yutani synth" was seamless and perfect and he was my fav character

• Ian Holm's cameo felt...... weird. I generally don't like dead actors being reanimated in cgi anyway even with the consent of the family yadda yadda but... blegh. The cgi felt a little dodgy on his face as well but tbh the glitchy jilted nature of it really added to him being a damaged synth LOL

• references were v cute. might be ott to some but I liked it

•PRACTICAL EFFECTS MY BELOVED. BIG SCARY ASS PUPPETS MY BELOVED. GOO AND SLIME MY BELOVED

• the whole birth scene shook me to my coooorrree. As someone who wants to be pregnant and give birth nothing has gotten so under my skin like that before. The ides of doing your best to nurture what will be your child only for this fucking horror to come out of you.... oh my god......... AND LACTATING THE GOO?? ARE YOU FR????????

• mostly smart characters in this movie which I appreciate! the whole zero g acid blood vortex scene was very funsies

• great score. Calls back to the original but not too much

• PERFECT set design. Felt like watching alien isolation as a movie

• I love that they went back to a more analog clicky buttons/flicky switches aesthetic, the holograms and touchscreens of prometheus and covenant never felt right

• the black goo as an almost intelligent substance is so so fun. It "speeds up evolution" but it's smart enough not to destroy its host outright. The offspring was gestated in an egg sac containing fucking acid BUT it didn't hurt kay (until she birthed it and it no longer needed her)

• also the offspring not growing its xeno tail until it consumed the last of the goo from kay? Very nice touch

• JUST. PREGNANCY AS A GROUNDWORK FOR HORROR. SO UNDERUTILISED. SO EFFECTIVE.

• this films chest burster scene... dare I say....scarier than the original. Watching her ribs crack with the xray machine.... YUCKY

• me and my bf has settled to calling the black goo Promethean Fire. This isn't part of the review I just like that hehe

• when I heard the name Romulus I mentioned to my bf about Romulus and Remus being raised by wolves and I was like "what if this is the start of the crossbreeds like in resurrection?" AND I WAS FUCKING RIGHT BITCH!!!!!!!!!!

•Sound design was excellent, the thumping huge heavy footprints of the xeno felt sososososososo good with the cinema surround sound auugghhg

Okay, the message Nat found in Travis' place was 'Tell Nat she was Right'. So his killer was probably planning to kill him for longer than the time between Nat's phone call to Taiessa and finding him dead?

Hmm, so someone on Reddit pointed out that the empty forest that Taiessa looked out into actually had the man with no eyes standing there in the same shot in the intro. Interesting.

I remember everything: Life lessons from Dawson’s Creek by Erin Hensley and Julia Callahan [This is very readable and conversational in style, if a bit judgy at times. Spot on about Dawson being the worst. Best when giving the love to Pacey and Joey.

Buffy the Vampires Slayer: Season 8 - (The Long Way Home, No Future for You, Wolves at the Gate, Time of Your Life, Predators and Prey, Retreat, Twilight, Last Gleaming). [Good on the re-read although the issues with it being too OTT remain. It does have some excellent moments. (The opening arc, the chain), I get why it was the case, but Spike takes too long to be bought into the story and I still don’t get why you-know-who became Twilight.]

Buffy the vampire slayer: myth, metaphor & morality by Mark Field - [its a good read. A blog put into book form. It probably really needed some editing to make it more 'bookish' and fix all the "no spoilers" nonsense. But he has a good perspective on the show and i even learnt a couple of new things. For the price, highly recommended]

Buffy meets the Academy: essays on the episodes and scrips as texts edited by Kevin K. Durand

Coraline by Neil Gaiman - short, sweet in a lightly terrorfying kind of way. Cats don't need names because they know who they are.

Sweet Dreams: The story of the new romantics by Dylan Jones - very wordy, over-written (if a huge tome of mostly third-party quotes can count as being over-written), and lacking in focus. it tries to tell the story of the New Romantic era and the significant influence it had on music in the 1980s, but the use of quotes (680 pages of them!) and the overlapping (and sometimes contradictory) reminisences from a long cast of participants is a hard slog.

The Outlaws Scarlett & Browne by Jonathan Stroud - a very readable opening book of a new series. It's fast-paced, page-turner fantasy/dystopian story set in a wild Britain after some kind of catastrophe (that is not explained). Scarlett and Albert are an interesting pair, very different from one another and both with largely unexplored backstories. There is much more to explore in subsequent books.

The Sad Ghost by Lize Meddings - not my cup of tea. I get what it was trying to do re anxiety and such but I just thought the execution was really off and the message wrong?

The Boys Club by by Michael Warner - so good. a must for every AFL fan. Great game, shame about the corrupt, controlling, power hungry people that run it. The only hope is a future CEO that believes in the separation of powers, transparent governance and a genuine love of the game.

Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski - another good read in the Witcher series, much of which is featured in the first season of The Witcher (Netflix), I did get a bit confused at times but it all comes together for a ripper of an ending.

One of us is lying - by ?? - fast paced, multi-perspective that is engrossing and intreaguing. Loved it!

One of us is next - by ?? - not as good as the original sequel to one if us is lying. Its over-written and never overcomes the fact that its not about the original bayview 4. Disappointing.

Sylvester (or the Wicked Uncle) by Georgette Heyer. The best book. I love this one so much. Read it every year. Never gets old. Perfection.

The Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski - Very good! Inspired by season 2 of the Witcher to pick the series back again and very impresses with the translation to screen. Very readable and so good to get to know the characters more closely.

Brawler Animals Part 4: Are we there yet theres so many Brawlers oml--

Belle: Hyena. Because Raccoon is too obvious. (Those glasses of hers 🦝) Also known for being a thief, hyenas were too fun to pass up! Not getting too much in the details (because... because), but one subspecies has a matriarchal hierarchy. Ott: Horses, Raccoons (self imposed)

Leon: Owl. While I wouldn't exactly call him wise, Leon is craftier than Nita. The way they fly completely silently and can blend in with trees perfectly makes me think of lizard boy here when he's invisible. Of course, he's still a little baby owl who just learned to fly. Ott: Chameleons, Sharks, Wolves, Ducks.

Barley: Labradoodle. A highly popular dog crossbreed. I was torn between this and Scoodles (mainly for the mustache gain from the Scottish Terrier 😭) but I ultimately went with this choice, for the curly fur, taller stature and the lean look. Ott: Rabbits, Canadians (lol)

Crow: Coywolf. A hybrid species between a coyote and a wolf. There's Crow's solitary vibes, and the fact that coyotes and badgers have been seen hunting together. Isn't that sweet? Include a Tasmanian Devil and we've got the gang. Ott: I dont think he has any animal themes? Lmao.

Squeak: Jellyfish. Comprised of nearly all water, is completely silent (vocally, I headcanon that his squeakiness is the dog toys). Alternatively, he could be a snail/slug. Sticky slime might have been more fitting and he's definitely weird/ugly-cute category... but I'm willing to give him cool/cute points. Ott: N/A?

Mortis: Ferret. I really wasn't sure if I should go with a more "serious" animal, but tbh Mortis actually isn't that serious. Ferrets are energetic, playful and they slink around so much. (It's scary how flexible they are and Mortis is scarily THIN in his model.) They're also very high maintenance pets, and just look at Mortis. Ott: BATS.

Max: Peregrine Falcon. Fastest bird, and a great hunter. Because a cheetah is too obvious. Alternatively, Hummingbird. :3c Ott: Rabbit/Hare (which would have been perfect), Cheetah (self-imposed).

Dyna-Mike: Goat. He's old and grumpy (supposedly). Very energetic. That beard of his too. Because of his mining and environment, he could be associated with mountains. Also, his Dyna-Jumps resemble bouncing goats. Ott: Canary.

Some fandoms when people say ‘daemon au’ I immediately know what animal their daemons would be.  No idea for bnha.  Like maybe a wolf for Bakugo cuz ‘lone wolf’ (the irony being that wolves are social animals)?  

Definite headcanon that Deku’s daemon didn’t settle for a long time and he got teased for it--it finally settled when All Might told him he could be a hero.

All Might’s is definitely something like a lion or an eagle.  Something ott heroic.

Zack Snyder should do a Warhammer 40K movie.  He loves big men with huge muscles and taking objectively silly things seriously (in an OTT kind of way), and that’s what you need for Space Marines.

(Space Wolves or Imperial Fists, maybe?)
