Okay. So I think I've established I'm mentally ill. And I'm thinking about a character, so I'm forcing the people who follow me to hear about them. Cool? Cool.

I've got this little OC named The Groundskeeper. They started as a joke. They are no longer a joke. I love them. Here we go.

Avery "Aster" Hatchaway, probably like, mid 20s. He/They pronouns, he will take your gender and you can DEAL WITH IT. He worked at a flower shop right out of college and really liked it, made some good friends, got a little apartment, life is good. The flower shop ends up closing and he's like "Shit, I need a new job."

So he looks for jobs, finds out he can get a job as a groundskeeper at a local cemetery. Sure. Why not. He can still do all his planting that he likes while listening to music, the pay is shockingly good, and he needs a new job anyway. He goes, gets the interview, and gets the job. Before he does though, the interviewer (who's the old groundskeeper) is like "Hey, so you're going to have to work nights sometimes and it might get weird" and Avery is like "Sure, whatever, I can do that."

So they go and start working. Job is good, they're good at it. One thing they don't realize: Because they aren't talking to anybody, they don't realize they've begun to refer to themselves as "The Groundskeeper" while in the graveyard. They forget about their name while on the clock. But they don't exactly realize it, and they spend like, a week with the job.

Then, their first nightshift comes. And it's fine for like, an hour or two. They're mostly just confused on why they've been stuck there at night, but fine, why not fuck up their sleep schedule for the day. Then, they hear things. Long story short, paranormal shit happens, the Groundskeeper, reasonably, tries to leave, only to find the gate locked and a note there (Hello Jon, apologies for the deception-💥) basically explaining they can't leave yet, cause yada yada keep the supernatural stuff in check.

So, The Groundskeeper survives. Clearly. And after their shift they immediately go to the old groundskeeper and is like "Why the FUCK wouldn't you tell me??" "I did warn you." "You didn't warn me of SHIT-"

They're mad. They're terrified of the ghosts. But they also need money, so they keep the job, and eventually fall into the rhythm of keeping the supernatural entities who live in the graveyard in check while also maintaining the place. It's fun. They're basically Jon from TMA on a smaller scale. (In the sense that they signed themselves up to deal with paranormal bullshit, I haven't actually finished the podcast so don't come at me-)

Okay. Backstory rant over. Here's some facts about them:

-They have a little toolbelt that holds: A supernatural book they found, a flashlight, extra batteries, scissors, a screwdriver, their phone, and their earbuds.

-They got lost in a liminal space beneath a crypt once because of a ghost trying to fuck with them.

-They got thrown down the stairs of an underground crypt once and needed stitches after.

-They really fucking hate crypts (I wonder why.)

-They dislike coffee and rely on sugar to stay awake.

-The book they keep on them can light things on fire. No, they don't know how it does that.

-They're a cat person, but they think dogs are cute.

-They had to perform an exorcism on a kid who snuck in one night, played with an ouija board, and got possessed.

-They like to draw but aren't good at it.

-They'd have a tumblr account.

-They aren't afraid of the dark, but if they're alone and they think too much about it, they'll get paranoid.

-They definitely saw the FNAF movie.

-They're a gamer.

-They're traumatized but certainly not as bad as they could be.

-They have not told any of their friends about what this job actually entails.

-They're on good terms with a few supernatural entities, including some ghosts and the Näcken that lives in the pond. It's a big cemetery. There's a pond.

Look. It's them. They're probably half awake.

Podcast Reviews and Recs

The night shift podcast

I am a simple girl. Give me an urban fantasy podcast with the interesting world-building and script and you'll get my heart on a platter. It's pretty short podcast (s1 is complete) with the queer cast and an engaging story in the world where magic that used to be is gone and only some people have traces of it. I loved the plot, the main character, the supporting cast, romantic pair, sound design and voices. My only pitfall is that I believe that pretending that the main character runs the real broadcast was ruining my suspension of disbelief. Some things that happened to him could fuck up all his plans if broadcasted and listened by the wrong people. Would work better if he was a blogger who researches conspiracy staff, and just records everything cos he is a paranoid wreck. However, overall it's pretty great so my advice is to give it a try. (Also the soundtrack for it is awesome) MC is a transman as far as I know, but it's not obvious.

Camp Here And There

This is one of those podcasts. It starts fun. Cute even. Short episodes, general creepy weridness reminding about wtnv, funny jokes. THEN IT STABS YOU. 7 TIMES. And makes you cry like a little bitch. The setting is a very weird summer camp with the main character being the nurse who has to deal with all this stuff as well as their mental, health and relationship problems. It is actually very good insight into the way love works and how many forms it can take and how difficult it is to express sometimes. Also writing is very beautiful. S1 is currently completed and I can't wait for a S2. (This one is also very queer. MC is a gay transman and their are also several sideships)

Malevolent

This one is a good horror podcast about a british private investigator who has lost his eyesight and got an eldritch buddy in his head. Yay! Somehow this entity is more rational and relatable one between the 2 of them. By the 20th episode you'll start saying "no, arthur" at the same time. Also, no romance and as an aro I do appreciate this - the platonic connection between you and the voice inside your head can be as valid as romantic one. What can be more intimate than sharing a body, right? Has many good classic elements from Lovecraftian (cosmic) horror so if it's your thing - give this podcast a try.

Neighbourly

I love you weird beautiful horror anthology podcasts with the same setting and some connections between episodes, but without action filled lengthy overarching plot. You're brilliant and you're doing great. This pocast tells you a story about people living in the weird little neighborhood and their secrets. Some stories are funny, some are heartwarming, some are creepy, and some are depressing. I find it more weird than scary, but it's exactly what I like about this one, so try it out if it's also your thing. Also I find the narrator voice very soothing. Stories do have lgbtq+ subtext if it's important for you.

Monstrous Agonies

I love you weird supernatural but at the same time uncanny relatable advice segment shows. This one is an advice segment for liminal folk (different types of paranomal creatures) but it is kinda a metaphor for all types of queer, aspec, pocs and neurodivergent people. This is a good comforting podcast so if you feel a bit lost and need some encouragement give it a try. It has some overarching plot, but it's not very big so if you have a short attention span - this one is perfect.

Finding Satan

The main character is an entitled brat and academia doesn't work like this for fuck's sake. Can't recommend this one, sorry.

I'm comfy with pretty much anything fantasy or sci-fi, but steer clear of paranomal stuff (i can do spooky, but not straight up horror). Found family where they're all dumasses leaving chaos in their wake will always be my baby and it will be in most likely everything I write.

As for tropes... here's a list off the top of my head:

A character gets injured and their lover/best friend/sibling/parent/etc is like "Nobody touches them!" (That one scene in Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian MY BELOVED)

Autism x adhd ship pairings. Even if neither one is canonically nd and is just coded nd that's fine by me

Choatic gremlins. Just- chaos gremlin characters. Even better if they come in groups or pairs- romantic or platonic, I don't care.  give me gremlins causing chaos and making their existence everyone's problem

Protective love interests that are soft for their lover and hostile with everyone else, bonus points if they're at least a little bit morally gray and not opposed to murder. Westley, Raven, Percy Jackson, Katniss Everdeen, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, you get the idea. Those are my favorite love interests

I also love the oddly specific ship dynamic that is: scary powerful lady falls in love with a himbo that's too dumb to be scared of her but drinks enough respect women juice on the regular to be proud and supportive of everything she does and thinks she's amazing. (there's a post somewhere but I can't find it rn).

super niche but: main character's mom seems harmless, but is actually a total badass. bonus points if the main character is super protective of her and is a total momma's boy (see: Sally Jackson in PJO, Raven's mother, and Barbara Lake TOA: Trollhunters) (i've said this one before but idc)

That thing when the hero has been doing this for so long that they're not even phased by anything anymore, they're just like "ah shit, here we go again... *sighs, it's not even 8 in the morning yet*" (Peter B. Parker in Spiderverse, Ninjago, Percy Jackson in everything after the HOO series)

Found Family but they're all dumbasses my beloved (see: Guardians of the Galaxy, Percy Jackson Heroes of Olympus, D&D: Honor Among Theives, etc etc)

my thoughts on wet moon 7

finished wet moon. i liked it. i wish the ending was different though. i feel like a huge bitch for complaining about it since sophie worked so long on it and i don't want to tell her how to do her own story better and i can definitely tell she felt it was the best way to end the story. i'm not taking that away from her whatsoever, i dont think it was a bad ending by any means, this is simply how i personally would've preferred the story to end (spoilers for wet moon 7, obviously).

the idea of a conclusion - wet moon is very floaty in the way the story is told. it's not super abstract, but it's not really told as a conventional story, either. it's just sorts of glimpses at character's lives. this is why i find the finality of morning cold unfitting. we do have a lot of things left open, but they're more plot points than character relations for the most part (what was with the cleo eats it stuff, the paranomal stuff, etc). it felt like it closed the door on each character's narrative way too concretely. i thought the scene with beth was cute, but if she never showed up after her departure prior, i think it would've been fine. i'm also not a fan of penny's biphobia being swept under the rug for it to turn out she herself is queer all along

as a continuation on that point - the "fairy tale" ending. i thought the ending was far too sweet. i'm not a hater of happy endings, but again, tied with the conclusivity and fluff in the forms of beth and penny's story i thought could have been omitted, it felt too twee for my tastes

to summarize my biggest complaint spawning from those two: i felt this book was a bit of a tonal mismatch to prior ones. it was a bit too cut and dry and didn't have as much mystique

i dont mind cleo and mara splitting, and there were definitely seeds to it happening, but it was a bit sudden - moreso was trilby and cleo getting together when the door on that felt closed since about book 2. mara and natalie also felt a little forced, but both relationships had merits, the latter much more than the former

i don't completely get why trilby is mad with martin - you can sort of gleam why but this is left open in a way that isnt satisfying such as the other closed plot points i'd have been fine with keeping open or the things that do stay unexplained

while i mention natalie - her design. i feel like her scar was really downplayed. which, if it healed, yeah, sure, but i liked it a lot more in prior volumes. i also just generally prefer her design in prior volumes, but that's a minor gripe

a lot of focus on nissa and nora. this isn't inherently a problem, but they were barely that present prior, so to have a majority of the finale focus on them was an odd choice - though it's a bit of a lose/lose. either they could have been retroactively used more (which would've had to have changed the story a lot), or just shafted entirely. this is another minor gripe, but it stood out to me.

but don't get me wrong, like i said i still enjoyed wet moon a lot - i wrote all of this because i care, and even then, i must stress it wasn't a bad ending at all, i just have my gripes.

sophie's art through all books is spectacular and her writing was engaging - even despite my gripes with this volume, i thought she nailed the character voices (especially zia) and understanding of the character relations - its less so that she ruins character relationships, but rather she has a lot more clarity on them that, while good, feels somewhat incongruent with prior volumes.

on the art - every volume had great art but holy shit she really stepped it up in this volume. im not good with descriptive words but its just like a total evolution and its wild. trilby's redesign is awesome. every character manages to look more distinct than they already were, which again feels like magic. i definitely wanna read more of her stuff

im curious of what you think about the yiik characters. i need to know what other yiik fans think. alex is my personal favorite (i want to kick him down the stairs) but i like michael a lot too. theyre all stupid nerds. honestly if you have any headcanons id love to hear them.

first off every YIIK character is queer and neurodivergent becuz I'm queer and neurodivergent and I said so, the specifics of that depend on my mood and what sort of au bullshit i'm coming up with at 2am in a VC with my friends tho

Alex is complicated. i hate him hes a massive douche but also I really do get what the devs were trying to with him. the occasions when he's being nice and having fun with his friends are where he shines and honestly at heart hes just some guy who needs to get a grip and get his shit together (relatable). if i knew him personally i'd probably slap him and then we'd be good, he probably specialised in sci-fi/fantasy creative writing for his libarts degree and definitely wrote an essay at somepoint about videogames as an art form. He has tattoos but they're all probably really cringe and embarassing because they were super trendy when he got them and then fell out of fashion, he has one of those barbed wire ones around his upper arm.

Michael is my FAVORITE GUY OF ALL TIME HES SO SILLY but also i've made him horribly angsty in my brain as well it's so. i think him and alex have a really good "friends who are used to each other's bullshit" dynamic but also i ship them a little bitty bit just cuz i'm a sucker for besties who are obliviously in love with each other as a trope. He would hate-watch ancient aliens and buzzfeed unsolved because he thinks he knows better than them. If you read his comments on ONISM he also seems to be a really sweet and supportive guy with the userbase and thats rlly cool hes such a guy Aside from that though he has the most unexplored depth as a character imo, since it's confirmed he isn't from the present reality and at some point definitely becomes aware of that fact I like to think underneath the funnyman bestie thing he's probably having a crisis about who he is and stuff because even before he's consciously aware of it he probably felt this vague subconscious feeling of like,,,Not Belonging ig? idk i think he probably knows this isn't where hes really meant to be and hes trying to truck through it but the impostor syndrome is definitely there. I love michael so much he is a certified blorbo

Rory is sooo mecore I stole his name online because he's so mecore we are both emo/scene kids and his canon favorite song according to some questions directed at the dev team is a brighteyes song that i also love its like fate. ANYWAY I feel really bad for Rory because i think his character is probably handled one of the worst just with the tonal whiplash a lot of his character-centric moments has. I bet he listens to weezer and radiohead. If YIIK was set now he would be into creepypasta and he would get michael into it since it ties in with his paranomal urban legend stuff, they would vlog hunting for slenderman together. him and alex run a gaming channel together (THIS IS AN INSIDE JOKE BUT I HAD TO PUT IT IN I COULDNT HELP MYSELF)

Vella is pretty and I think she's super cool, one of my besties LOVES her so I kinda let him be the friend group CEO of vella stuff but my biggest takeaways from her is that I hope she gets back into making music again, but for her own fun this time instead of to fulfill some success pressure. maybe she starts a crappy little garage band with some of the gang and they write terrible songs about aliens who smoke pot and dance the macarena and she's the only one there who can actually play but they have fun with it. She also knows all the videogame cheat codes and keeps setting high scores that alex and michael cant beat. Also her mind dungeon reminds me of yume nikki and thats super cool cuz i love yume nikki

Chondra and Claudio deserved way more time for their characters to develop and also their lore is weird and confusing and I think the whole missing brother thing is rlly weird too becuz of the reveal of how that all works with alex and shit. BUT if they had been handled bettter they probably would be my favorites because I think claudio is super fun and his VA sounds like he's really going for it and he's just such a chill guy and he's super passionate about his interests and i respect that and 100% would be his bestie chondra is super cool too, she's clearly really into sports and I bet she hangs out at the local skate park and impresses everyone cuz of her roller skates and also probably gets vella into skating too and they go together and have matching customised helmets just for the extra cool factor. alex and michael and rory come and watch them but are too pussy to try (alex has had enough from that stupid skateboard ability you get in vella's dungeon). Maybe she goes to some competitions for it and stuff too

uhhh some other various stuff the essentia is really cool but also confusing and it took ages to make sense of her lore but i LOVE her voice the effects to make it robot-y are *chefs kiss* and essentia 995 is just SO idk how to describe it the part when she says "often it is necessary to lie to oneself to get a tough job done" hits really hard for some reason. shes metal as fuck, metaphorically and literally. sammy is literally a caricature of a real life dead girl and i think that's pretty fucked up and they shouldnt have done that, but she would have been really cool if it wasn't for that big yikes. in general i really love a lot of the influences yiik has i'm a huge fan of rpgmaker horror and murakami books and a bunch of the other shit that it references so hehehehehe thats cool

this is long but also this is everything I can think of off the top of my head thank you for letting me be abnormal about this stupid game i hate it and love it so much :D

Akira would most likely participate only to end up wounded as hell but surprise surprise she dont die!!!!!!! She's literally balling bro, she probably wouldn't kill but she would definitely hit someone for fun then steal their shit

Seria would definitely take advantage of this madness and commit some crimes (she kills people she doesn't like on a monthly basis so this would be the one night she wouldn't have to worry about the seafarers trying to search for a body) and she would just drag people and try more methods

Ophelia would stick to her own ways and hide but tempt her enough and she'll kill anyone who encroaches on her territory, she's very defensive and her castle is the only thing that really remains undamaged in a town of ruin

Noor would kill no hesitation because she's kind of like a final girl sort of situation and she knows people are coming for her and so she gears up and is like "fuck it all we ball" she causes a shit ton of destruction

for the paranomal activity -

Akira doesn't believe in ghosts, but she definitely believes in superstitions with mirrors and bad luck. She has a small fear of mirrors actually, she usually covered them up before she went to bed at one point

Seria is a siren, obviously she believes in ghosts, both figuratively and literally and sometimes she carries out prayers for the women in her town so they dont get lost on the way to the afterlife

Ophelia is kind of a ghost and human, she's just stuck there, never ages really so yeah. she can also see ghosts, sometimes she helps resolve their issues, and there are like two types in her world: theres regular which means they basically had no issues and are free to go but they need guidance and theres poltergeists who have issues that need to be resolved before they go and their form depends on what issues and baggage they have. more times than not she runs into poltergeists

Noor believes in ghosts, shes almost a magnet for them and usually she can sense some bad juju. she technically deals with them for a side hustle when shes not being hunted down
