Are you considering any other alternative animals? Because I think that Gotham would be more suitable, for example, an opossum hybrid Reader, if it means a pure law-abiding civilian or a raccoon/fox, for a more morally gray, but peaceful one (just ife is hard), or a badger and it would be a villain or antihero. Can you imagine the degree of comicality if someone catches Bats or Wayne with a real live badger, which they squeeze like a puppy, and meanwhile he behaves completely wildly and tries to bite off their hand? (except for Damien/Robin, he obviously and notoriously loves all non-human animals with unconditional love). Or a situation where the raccoon Reader helps Alfred wash the dishes? Or how the possum in a human body leaves some of its instincts and pretends to be dead when attacked by some villain (ideally, probably the Joker), that is, it really convincingly pretends like a real animal and deceives others, at least until it considers the situation safe, and the rest of the hostages are not so lucky (because it's a Joker)? (I think this would be the first meeting) If you need birds/flying/non-mammalian animals, I think of a pigeon, a crow and… I do not know what large birds of prey should be found in the geography of Gotham (and I did not name hybrid bats, because it is too obvious and it has already been mentioned in a couple of posts on this topic). And I would be a rat, whoever kept them as pets knows that they are just mini dogs. Of course, wild rats or passerines can be more aggressive than decorative ones, but this is rather due to their forced female survival. I use a translator because I don't know English so well and I don't have much free time for thoughtful translation. And I also had an anonymous smiley face, but I forgot it —.^,—

I definitely have thought through some other animals, and will for sure write some one-shots and hc in the future if anyone asks for them. 

I’m open to making any and all kinds of hybrid readers.

So far I have a robin reader, a cat reader, and a puppy reader. 

I've been staying on the more common pet side of things, but the thought of a possum, opossum, badger, or raccoon reader is definitely an interesting concept. This is due to their wild and untamable nature in contrast to domesticated pets.

However I know jack shit about those animals so it wouldn’t be as detailed. Though I’d for sure attempt it. 

Because the idea of The Bruce Wayne, the wealthy philanthropist and Gotham City's golden boy, standing up at some random podium, trying to give a speech, with a rabid, hissing and scratching badger in his hands would definitely cause a large, hilarious commotion. 

Or even if the family attended one of those many fancy galas that they fund with this enormous, ferocious looking, sharp-taloned eagle perched on one of their shoulders. 

Or perhaps the family are attending a high-brow dinner, with a rat seated in the centre, one of those miniature harnesses wrapped around its form. The entire restaurant's attention drawn to the billionaire family and the rodent they’ve brought with them in a way that borders on being alienated. Because rats are usually chased out of a restaurant, not brought in and treated like royalty. But who's to go against the Wayne family?

Maybe the reader is a villain or anti-hero that the Gotham vigilantes are tasked to capture, in which they end up becoming unhealthily attached to, to the point where they can't have the reader in their human form without the chance of being recognised. So instead the Waynes/vigilantes are always seen with a snake wrapped snugly around their necks, torsos, thighs, or arms. Or a ferret tied safely to their utility belts, folded comfortably in their pockets, or peeking out from inside their shirts. Perhaps the reader can shift into a some form of sea water creature, like a seahorse, jellyfish, or octopus. Where in that case they never even get the chance to ever leave the estate, unlike how they would as a reptile or mammal. Trapped in a large enclosure, in the middle of the manor, designed to accommodate your species perfectly, for life.

What DOES this event look like?

So, I know that I have wanted to do a recursive exchange in the MCYT space, probably in the winter of 2024, open to all of MCYT.

It will be an exchange where you write fic of fic— a work inspired by someone else's work. But how exactly will it run? There are two options, and I'm asking the community to help me decide.

#1: Remix Exchange.

In that exchange we will have qualifing fandoms (probably the canonized tags on Ao3) and you have to have written a certain number of qualifying fics in those fandoms to sign up. Then when you sign up you do so with the ships in your past works and the ships you are willing to write, both platonic and romantic! And then you're matched with someone who has written the ships you're interested in. You then remix one of their fics, writing an AU, prequel, sequel, alternate POV, etc

So for example I would sign up having written mostly Dream SMP Technoblade & Phil Watson, but I am willing to write anything from SMPearth, most Dream SMP, a bunch of QSMP, some 3rd Life, and anything from Origins. I might be matched with someone whose main pairing is DSMP Quackity & Tubbo, and I’ll scan through their fics for one I want to respond to. Meanwhile, someone who offered DSMP Technoblade & Phil Watson is reading my fics, looking for one to respond to. 

We'll have our creation period like is usual for an exchange, and when I post my gift I will be using both the "gift to" function and the "inspired by" function. Once posted, there will be an anonymous period of the exchange where I get a mystery gift and my gifter gets a gift that is on anon as well, and then all will be revealed a week later.

#2: Derivative Works Exchange

Option two is that we run a nomination period, and people nominate fics that either have a blanket permission statement (fun database here), or a comment from the author saying that fic inspired by their fic is okay. Then each fic is entered into the tag set as its own micro fandom. You then sign up as you would for a normal exchange, with up to ten of these fic fandoms as being something you are either offering to write for or requesting for your own gift. Once matched, you then write a side story, prequel, sequel, AU, or something else within the universe of that fic. 

So for example, I had the idea that I really want to see a side story about Etho and Iskall in This Is About A Stuffed Bird, by Bee_4. I will sign up and request that fic as one of my fandoms (and others, you'd probably need a minimum of three fandoms), and meanwhile I’m offering to write people’s requests for This Is About A Stuffed Bird by Bee_4, Dog at the Door, Passerine by Thscs, Misery Meat by ReturnsNull, and Catbag by Supinetothestars (note that I, the person writing this, has not checked for blaket permission for those fics, so don't take it as given that they'd definitely qualify for the exchange).

i got back into dsmp recently and your fics were the first ones I considered rereading. ended up relistening to passerine podcast's reading of tcfs and it was really nice to experience the story again :) your fics have been a huge comfort and inspiration to me and I'm happy to see that you're still writing these characters, even after everything that's happened in the fandom.

If Alastor had bird traits, what would bird species would they be?

Ooh, this is a good question. Very much in the spirit of random anons. (This is a compliment, I promise.)

My first thought was that it’d have to be something intelligent, something capable of mimicking human speech. Alastor’s voice is very important to him, so I think if he had traits from an animal in a class where some are extremely good at mimicking human speech and some aren’t, he’d be one of the talking ones.

That narrows it down to mostly parrots and corvids, but I’m willing to throw in Australian Magpies (not corvids, despite the name) because they’re such menaces, and I think swooping season is a fun parallel to the fanon idea of Alastor going through rut.

I like the idea that rut isn’t necessarily sexual for Alastor, that he just gets extra combattive and irritable. It’d be similar for swooping. He wouldn’t be protecting offspring or a mate, he’d just get extra territorial about his radio tower for no apparent reason, snatching up any demons who get too close.

Now, back to corvids and parrots.

For parrots, I narrowed it down to two species based on intelligence and speech, as well as the additional criteria of having some red on them, somewhere. This leaves us with African Grey Parrots (red tail feathers) and Scarlet Macaws (mostly red).

But deer aren’t exactly red, so I don’t think that should exclude our next contestants, the American Crow, the Fish Crow and the Chihuahuan Raven.

One of my favorite things about Alastor being a deer is that the particular species I believe him to be (a White Tailed Deer) is native to Louisiana. Now, you’re not exactly going to find Australian Magpies, African Greys, or Scarlet Macaws flying around in Louisiana unless somebody’s pet got loose.

Meanwhile, American Crows, Fish Crows (the two species of crows most often observed mimicking human speech) and Chihuahuan Ravens are all birds that Alastor would’ve been fairly likely to encounter during his lifetime.

And then, after all that research, I remembered the existence of the shrike…

The Loggerhead Shrike fits none of my original criteria, but is native to Louisiana and is famous for hunting prey that is sometimes as large or larger than they are and impaling them on sticks.

This bird is a serial killer.

Ok, so that’s anthropomorphizing a bird that’s really just hunting to eat, like most carnivores do, but like. If you know this bird, you know I’m not wrong.

They’re nicknamed the butcherbird, and they’ve fucking earned it.

Bonus points for two of their common prey items being spiders and snakes, for all your RadioDust, RadioApple, and RadioSnake needs, platonic or otherwise.

I have some choice sections from their wikipedia page that I’d like to include, but I’m putting them below the cut in case anyone’s squeamish about details of animal death in a predator-prey context.

Loggerhead shrikes have been repeatedly observed killing prey larger than themselves by spearing the neck or head of the animal and twisting. The speed at which this occurs causes a whiplash injury to the animal. The neck strength of the shrikes compensates, making their talon weakness inconsequential.

Although loggerhead shrikes are passerines, they are a predatory species that hunt during the day. They primarily eat insects, but also consume arachnids, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, bats and small birds. They have even eaten venomous snakes such as the water adder. The size of prey ranges from 0.001 g (3.5×10−5 oz) insects to 25 g (0.88 oz) mice or reptiles.

They are not true birds of prey, as they lack the large, strong talons used to catch and kill prey. Instead, they are sit-and-wait hunters that stalk prey by hawking and diving from elevated perches.

Due to the shrike's small size in proportion to the size of its prey, it must rely on specialized adaptations to facilitate its hunting. The powerful, hooked beak of the loggerhead shrike allows it to sever the neck of a small vertebrate. Larger prey are subjected to impaling, in which they are pushed down into a sharp projection, such as a thorn or barbed wire. The bird can then tear off flesh by using the projection as an anchor. The shrike may also use the thorn to fasten and store its food to return to at a later time.

The motion of impalement appears to be instinctive, as parent shrikes do not demonstrate the behavior to their nestlings.

hello it's bird behavior asker again

What's unique about bird fresh and does his parasite self have wings idk like downy (think that's name) feathers or no wings?

Ahh ! yes yes I have been turning this one around in my brain thank you for asking again dear bird behavior anon :)!! Fresh hits me as a Cuculus canorus, or the comman cuckoo; he's a wonderful grey brown bird with some barred black stripes. These birds are verry fun! The aspects of this lovely bird I'm taking are mostly the parasitic aspects, you've heard me right, parasitic! These birds are known as something called "brood parasites" and will lay their eggs in other species nests, having their chicks be raised by unsuspecting adopted parents. Now, Fresh's whole persona is that he verry much does Not want to be seen as a horrible little parasite thing, so he dyes his wings a whole plethora of rainbow colors. Can't have everyone linking him to that horrid brood parasite, now can he? Another aspect I'm taking, though a more subtle nod to the avian inspiration, is in the way he holds his wings. A cuckoo, while singing or in the presence of a prospective mate, will hold their wings dropped down to their sides. Now I won't ever have Fresh interacting romantically with anyone [Ew!], I do have him consistently hold his wings farther down than any other bird; he holds his wings down to look less threatening. Another aspect, not Cuckoo related but more just Fresh himself, is the way he lands and takes off. I'm rather enamored with him having heelies/roller-skates [I just think they are the Cutest!] and I almost always draw him wearing them. I have him like long stretches of flat ground to take off or land, rolling forward to get more momentum or landing on his wheels like a plane. He doesn't need to, I just think it would be verry silly goofy [it looks nontheatening, nothing less Scary Threat Pay Attention than big goofy water bird failing to take off for a second.] [think large water bird [needing a large runway/streach of water to effectively get into the air] and [unrelated to the cuckoo aspects of his characterization [they are passerine birds and thus Extremely Good at fast take offs]]

Now, that's just Fresh when he has a host, Without one he's a bit more pathetic sad Thing. I haven't really gotten the clearest idea of what he'd look like at the moment aha. I don't think he'd have Real wings, as I'm having them be a representation of your soul/magic [Fresh, with little to no natural either of those, doesn't really have fully formed wings, ya' know? [and I also have it as, monsters may have wings, but Fresh isn't really a monster, so he might not naturally have them.]], though maybe he'd have a little fuzz. [the drawings I have presented are all, Iffy and just ideas. I don't really have a clear image of what he looks like bahaha]

Ok I have a music question- a few years ago I discovered an artist, forgot about her, and when I remembered her she'd completely disappeared from the internet. I wanna know if anyone knows anything about her (like if she's ok or if she rebranded) or has her songs downloaded. This is gonna be a bit long so details are under the cut.

Here's a combination of what I remember and what's left on spotify:

She was called "what a sin."

She was a trans woman, and I think from california?

Her music was on youtube, bandcamp, spotify, and probably other streaming platforms. Here's a couple screenshots of the remains of her spotify page.

I remember her having more releases besides the one shown here, but I don't remember the names or how many.

Her music was folk punk-y, and it was just her voice and a guitar. I think she said in the description of one of her albums that she recorded it with a phone app in her bedroom.

A couple song names I remember are "cthulhu calls me mommy" (or something along those lines) and "passerine". Passerine ended with the line "I think that today I have learned how to fly".

She had a few covers up on her youtube channel, including one of the "I fucked cthulhu good" song from tiktok, and Mountain Goats and Against Me! covers (I think specifically Fuckmylife666). She also had a Spotify playlist of inspirations that included those artists.
