Hello, hope you’re well! I just read Spock’s World for the first time, and I loved every bit of it - the world building you did for Vulcan, the dynamic among Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, the political dynamics surrounding the referendum, the fuller view of Spock’s family, the recreational side of the Enterprise, and more that I’m sure I’m forgetting right now… what a wonderful book.
One thing nagging at me is that I can’t figure out when the story takes place, relative to the events of the original series and the 6 films. Forgive me if I missed the obvious, but when does almost-Vulcan Brexit (Vulcexit?) occur?
First of all: thanks so much for the kind words! I'm delighted that you enjoyed the book. :)
Regarding when it happened: This is going to sound a little bizarre, but at this end of time I have absolutely no idea (except the general sense of "after Star Trek: The Motion Picture sometime").
Normal practice in the Trek (novel) offices at Pocket Books at that point was to encourage the writers not to get too hung up on that kind of issue unless there was some plot issue that hinged specifically on what the exact stardate was. The sense was always that, when the book was submitted for approval at the Paramount end, the people there—usually meaning the fabulous Paula Block and her colleagues—would check things over and assign (or suggest) a date if one needed to be assigned to make sense of things, or to get the novel to mesh cleanly with others. Since I was primarily concerned with the character interactions and other plot issues, I didn't give the question any further thought; and I don't recall the people in either the Paramount or the Pocket offices as having raised any further concerns about it one way or another.
That said: I see that the Memory Alpha site has assigned the stardate 7412 to the book, meaning the year 2274 in our dating. As to where they got this data... unless there's something in the book's text that would have assisted them and which I can no longer readily remember—which is entirely likely—your guess would be as good as mine.
HTH!

hii i'm new to the star trek fandom but am trying to write a paper on star trek fanfiction from the 60s/70s. would you happen to have any fic recommendations for me to check out? what are the iconic, keystone pre-internet fics? thank you sm!!
Hello! I'll help you with what I know, most of which is rather Spirk leaning so I'm a little lacking on gen knowledge.
A Fragment out of Time by Diane Marchant is the first published Spirk fic. There were definitely fics written before this that were shared among friends but this is the easiest place to start because it's hard to date the others as they weren't published until later (if they got published at all. I'm sure there were fics that fans of the time knew about but were never published). A Fragment out of Time was printed in Grup #3 in 1974
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Shut up…we’re by no means setting a precedent.” He was quiet…and not merely because he was used to obeying that voice implicitly. He was being peeled, slowly, like a delicate fruit, in time to some far off pagan rhythm and he found his logical mind was swathed in a white mist of sensual well-being. Gentle hands spread warm oil slowly, in ever-widening circles over his chest. Tantalizingly, teasing fingers ran over each nipple, flicking the tip lightly. A slow, deliberate tongue reached out to each erect button. He shivered, then squirmed; surprising himself. A sleek, well-oiled torso slid over his chest down to his navel. Tiny shivers accompanied the soft nips at his abdomen. Warm oil was dribbled over lower areas; then a [ravaging?] finger made him glisten. Even his thighs were being massaged…the pressure was…delicious. Well-skilled hands made long, swooping strokes from his knee up the inside of his leg to the upper thighs. Now, he could not prevent this, any more than he could stop a solar eclipse…even if he’s really desired to. It had been building all these years…no one set of circumstances was the cause…now, it seemed it had been inevitable from the outset.
The Ring of Soshern by Jennifer Guttridge is said to have been the first Spirk fic written (1968) but it wasn't published until Alien Brothers in 1987. It's much to long for me to copy it here
In the realm of non Spirk knowledge, A Trekkie's Tale by Paula Smith, printed in Menagerie #2 in 1973 is the origin of the Mary Sue trope
Tumblr media
"Gee, golly, gosh, gloriosky," thought Mary Sue as she stepped on the bridge of the Enterprise. "Here I am, the youngest lieutenant in the fleet - only fifteen and a half years old." Captain Kirk came up to her.
"Oh, Lieutenant, I love you madly. Will you come to bed with me?"
"Captain! I am not that kind of girl!"
"You're right, and I respect you for it. Here, take over the ship for a minute while I go get some coffee for us."
Mr. Spock came onto the bridge. "What are you doing in the command seat, Lieutenant?"
"The Captain told me to."
"Flawlessly logical. I admire your mind."
Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and Mr. Scott beamed down with Lt. Mary Sue to Rigel XXXVII. They were attacked by green androids and thrown into prison. In a moment of weakness Lt. Mary Sue revealed to Mr. Spock that she too was half Vulcan. Recovering quickly, she sprung the lock with her hairpin and they all got away back to the ship.
But back on board, Dr. McCoy and Lt. Mary Sue found out that the men who had beamed down were seriously stricken by the jumping cold robbies, Mary Sue less so. While the four officers languished in Sick Bay, Lt. Mary Sue ran the ship, and ran it so well she received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Vulcan Order of Gallantry and the Tralfamadorian Order of Good Guyhood.
However the disease finally got to her and she fell fatally ill. In the Sick Bay as she breathed her last, she was surrounded by Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Mr. Scott, all weeping unashamedly at the loss of her beautiful youth and youthful beauty, intelligence, capability and all around niceness. Even to this day her birthday is a national holiday of the Enterprise.
You can read many of the old fanzines for free at the Internet Archive. It's collecting certainly isn't complete but there's over 200 zines there including the Spockanalia zines, which were the first all Trek zines written
For a more complete understanding of early Star Trek fanfiction you should check out Boldly Writing: A Trekker Fan and Zine History, which you can read for free here.
I know this is a little disjointed but I hope it helps. Feel free to ask questions and I'll add more as I think of it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to The 1998 Khmer Rouge apology, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers’s first movie FLYING DOWN TO RIO (1932), Gali Atari, Baltimore artist Eric Block, Mayor Tom Bradley, singer-songwriter Ed Bruce, Pablo Casals, Bernard Cribbins, Rick Danko, Ted Danson, Yvonne Elliman, Marianne Faithfull, Neil "Spyder" Giraldo, New Orleans clarinetist Willie Humphrey, Scott Joplin’s 1902 song “The Entertainer,” Bollywood actor Rajesh Khanna, Jude Law, Franz Liszt’s 1857 symphonic poem "Die Hunnenschlacht,” jazz-Celtic singer Laurel Massé, Clyde McCoy, Dina Merrill, Mary Tyler Moore, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, cellist-composer Kiyoshi Nobutoki, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Paula Poundstone, Cozy Powell, rockabilly DJ/singer-songwriter Glenn Reeves, Jim Reid, The San Francisco Symphony, Marco Antonio Solís, Barbara Steele, The Supremes’s 1965 single “My World is Empty Without You,” Ray Thomas (Moody Blues), “Billy” Tipton, Jo Van Fleet, Jon Voight, Roger Voudouris, and my friend and musical compadre “Easy” Mark Tomeo. I lack photos of Mark and I together, so I grabbed pivotal images from Mark’s fascinating career as a champion of pedal steel, resonator, and twang guitar + singer-songwriter. He was in the Grammy-nominated “New Wave cowboy” band Rubber Rodeo (shown here)—in the 80s RR played at Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco while I just happened to be lurking nearby. The world got smaller when Mark and I met in Pennsylvania, performing and recording with Ben Kaplan, some Badlees-spinoff projects, and extensively with the band Neon Cactus. Circa 2000 I was working with Davy Jones (Monkees) on his JUSTME series of original recordings. Davy wanted a pedal steel guitarist, and I summoned Mark. Here’s “Hold Me Tight,” a Tex-Mex samba we did; the Mike Nesmith-ian arrangement was Davy’s idea:
Meanwhile HB EMT. By the time I get to Phoenix anything can happen…

Eurovision and Eurodance
There's been a lot questions lately about the Eurovision Song Contest thanks to a certain popular Eurodance meme (which btw, the chorus to that song is very similar to a Eurovision song:
youtube
"Flying the Flag" by Scooch (United Kingdom 2007 - 22nd Place)
Also simply know as Eurovison or ESC, it's a televised music competition held by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) members that began in 1956 to bring Europe together after WWII.
I want to stress that any genre of music can be a Eurovision song. As long has it has some lyrics. Not every entry is trying to be a meme and there's several songs you might know that you didn't know were Eurovision songs, ranging from "Volare" to Duncan Laurence's "Arcade' (which you might know as "loving you is a losing game" from TikTok). And also "Waterloo" by ABBA!
Eurodance at Eurovision
Up until 1999, Eurovision had a live orchestra, and most of the music was performed live. Arguably the first Eurodance song at ESC, "Ooo Aah… Just a Little Bit" had to a have computers on stage to have the "instruments" present:
youtube
"Ooh Aah… Just A Little Bit" by Gina G (United Kingdom 1996 - 8th place)
Thus, ESC was still mostly focused on pop that translated well with live instruments in the late '90s. And into the 2000s when backing tracks were required, the upbeat genre that ESC was more into was what I'd classify as "ethno bangers." Not that there isn't some crossover into what's traditionally referred to as "Eurodance" and many dance subgenres, but it was not quite the same thing, at least in my opinion. Your personal criteria may vary - I want to stress I'm not the authority on the minutiae of musical genres (and here's a post on Eurobeat vs. Eurodance btw).
Today, ESC still requires live lead vocals (and backing vocals had to live up until 2021), and being that the songs are performed live on TV, you'll hear some shakier vocals on my following examples… (although for anything from 2016 onward I didn't use the ESC performances due to geoblocking). Not to say that dance breaks haven't been popular in the last few years, and that choreography hasn't been heavy, especially with ethno bangers, but just that Eurodance hasn't always lended itself to having polished and flawless executions.
And of course, there are plenty of songs that I feel do fit the Eurodance category, including some performed by big names, such as:
youtube
"Follow My Heart" by Ich Troje feat. Real McCoy (Poland 2006 - Did not qualify for the final)
youtube
"Look Away" by Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman (Finland 2019 - DNQ)
youtube
"Vampires Are Alive" by DJ Bobo (Switzerland 2007 - DNQ)
"Glorious" by Cascada (Germany 2013 - 21st)
"Ne Ver Ne Boysia Ne Prosi" by t.A.T.u. (Russia 2003 - 3rd)
"Don't Play That Song Again" by Nicki French (United Kingdom 2000 - 16th)
A lot of ESC songs fall under the genre of schlager, as well as songs I'd classify as just EDM, and some with dubstep, especially as time has gone on. Many of the following songs to me are more a mix of genres than purely "Eurodance", but I think people seeking out similar songs will enjoy these:
"No Goodbyes" by Linda Wagenmakers (Netherlands 2000 - 13th)
"Sameyach" by PingPong (Israel 2000 - 22nd)
"No Dream Impossible" by Lindsay Dracass (United Kingdom 2001 - 15th)
"1 Life" by Xandee (Belgium 2004 - 22nd)
"Let Me Try" by Luminita Anghel & Sistem (Romania 2005 - 3rd)
"Tornerò" by Mihai Traistariu (Romania 2006 - 4th)
"This Is My Life" by Euroband (Iceland 2008 - 14th)
"Wolves of the Sea" by Pirates of the Sea (Latvia 2008 - 11th)
"DJ, Take Me Away" by Deep Zone & Balthazar (Bulgaria 2008 - DNQ)
"Lose Control" by Waldo's People (Finland 2009 - 25th)
"Run Away" by Sunstroke Project & Olia Tira (Moldova 2010 - 22nd; "Epic Sax Guy")
"Je Ne Sais Quoi" by Hera Björk (Iceland 2010 - 19th)
"Love Unlimited" by Sofi Marinova (Bulgaria 2012 - DNQ)
"It's My Life" by Cezar (Romania 2013 - 13th)
"Miracle" by Paula Seling & Ovi (Romania 2014 - 12th)
"Spirit in the Sky" by KEiiNO (Norway 2019 - 6th; Televote Winner; here's most of their performance in the grand final here if you are geoblocked)
"Halo" by LUM!X feat. Pia Maria (Austria 2022 - DNQ; co-written Gabry Ponte of Eiffel 65)
And two bonus videos:
Aqua's interval at Eurovision 2001
"I Love You" by Teflon Brothers x Pandora (Finnish Selection UMK - 2021)
And you might know two time champion Loreen, whose song this year is more pop to me than EDM or Eurodance, but it feels weird not to mention "Euphoria" (although I feel it's more straight up EDM, but again, mileage may vary):
"Euphoria" by Loreen (Sweden 2012 - Winner)
"Tattoo" by Loreen (Sweden 2023 - Winner)
While Eurovision does not equal Eurodance, there's still some fun jams, and again, many songs I included here that I feel straddle genres.

I slept like shit last night, so I amused myself by thinking about what type of music each of The Avengers would listen to if they were in a 90s high school AU. Look, my brain does weird things when I’m sleep deprived.
Tony: he’d still listen to AC/DC and probably Alice in Chains and Rage Against the Machine but I think he’d also listen to Radiohead and Bush. I could see him getting into a fight with Howard and running up to his room to play Machinehead as loud as possible.
Steve: obviously punk. I see skinny Steve being a skater boy. So, Greenday and No Doubt’s first album. Placebo weren’t really punk exactly, but close and I think Steve would appreciate Brian Molko’s small stature. Beastie Boys. Also he’d probably listen to ska since that draws inspiration from 40s music and swing.  So The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the Cherry Poppin Daddies.
Natasha: Grunge. Nirvana, Hole, Pearl Jam, Garbage, Stone Temple Pilots. But also Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, and The Cranberries. And if you dug deep enough you’d find her copy of TLC’s CrazySexyCool.
Bruce: the softer alternative, like Counting Crows, Hootie and the Blowfish, the Gin Blossoms, Tonic, Dave Matthews Band. Lilith Fair artists like, Meredith Brooks, Paula Cole, Jewel and definitely Lisa Loeb.
Clint: Dance and r&b. So Ace of Base, Real McCoy and La Bouche. But also Keith Sweat, Mary J Blige, Toni Braxton and Adina Howard. Clint and Natasha go to a TLC concert together but she swears him to secrecy.
Thor: has an old soul, so he listens to Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Iron Maiden. But then he also unabashedly listens to ABBA and The Bee Gees.

No evil headcannons (sorry for misspellings no auto correct.)
-Amrok cares so deeply about charls but has no clue how to be a good parent because McCoy is probly a difficult place to grow up especially for a spirit. And that's why charls is the way he is
-huey still has no idea that Hatfield was mean to amroc. This is why he wonders why amrock was so mean
-the people of hatfeild are a little manipulitive and the only reason huey is a good little cinnamonroll is because he is too people-stupid to realize that you can do that.
-Xochipilli is gay has slept with over half the scientists at vineyard. None of them would admit it tho
-Xochiquetzal is constantly pining over different women.
- ichabod learned a lot of his supertstitions from ixtlilton. Ixtlilton in turn learned them from tlaloc
- kitty and Paula are lezbianing together and that's why they are the only ones whith the little door in the big door.
-paula also probably built the houses for everyone I assume.
