Some of my latest hauls 🥰 . I could not pass up the opportunity to pick up some of these adorable Penguin editions, Monday or Tuesday by Virginia Woolf (which I haven't read yet) and The Odyssey translated by Emily Wilson. Walt Whitman - On the Beach Alone at Night (1855-1892) This little volume compiles several poems from Whitman's Leaves of Grass and although it misses the wonderful scope of the full work it's still pretty good at giving you a sense of what makes Whitman so influential and still so vibrant 150 years later. Sensual and ecstatic the poems here, in free verse, capture both nature and human experience in a way that really shows the transition from transcendentalism to realism in poetry, which make Whitman so vital. Starting out with Song of the Universal, you are sent spinning into a heady machine gun fire of images and invocations of ecstasy which are so characteristic of his style. Whitman feels still fresh and vital, which is a testament not only to his genius but also to how influential he was, all English and even some non-English poetry of the 20th century stands in some way on his shoulders. The major poet of the 20th century in my country, Fernando Pessoa, was a huge fan of Whitman and it shows, so his influence transcends space, time and language. Essential stuff. Daphne du Maurier - The Breakthrough (1966) A sci-fi/horror story by the writer of such classics as Rebecca or Don't Look Now, this is not astounding but does achieve some moments of sheer terror towards the end of the novella. At around 60 pages in these hand Penguin Modern Classics mini-volumes, it's a brisk read. In the story a guy gets sent to a research station in the middle of nowhere where weird things start happening. The titular breakthrough has to do with whatever is going on on the other side of life and towards the end of the story there is quite a bit of existential dread going on. This was originally published in a volume of shorts that included Don't Look Now, and the story does have some elements in common with that. Particularly grief for a lost child is present strongly in both, as well as the ultimate inability to recover that which is lost. ´ All in all, not an absolute classic but definitely worth the time to read if you are into the genre. Letter From Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

The first letter in this book is MLKs response and defence when being questioned on the necessity of his non-violent resistance campaigns. In which he explains the requirement of them and reasoning as to why it needed to be done now and not later.

The second essay is The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life which is a criticism he delivered at sermon, focused on the lack of support from the white church to other Christians in need.

Inspiring as you'd expect from MLK, he was the master at responding to critisim. It was laced in religion again as you'd expect which is something I don't personally follow but it doesn't really matter when you know he was fighting for something so important.
