I grew up with frequent chronic migraines that would put me to bed for days at a time which luckily became very rare once I became an adult so I became used to avoiding the sun at all costs and always having blackout curtains and a funny result of that is that apparently I have a really bad vitamin D deficiency which led to the doctor prescribing me standing in the sun for at least 15 minutes a day

the numbers we are focusing on today are the bottom three numbers - this is called the karmic tail in web. these numbers are the lessons we need to learn most in our lifetime, but our focus today is on who you were in a past life and why you'd need to learn those lessons. i'm going to break down some i've seen multiple times for karmic tail examples (these numbers can be rearranged in any order to be applied to an observed webs).

hermit, empress, and world energy is an interest mix - i think of a few things. first let's quickly break down the energies. hermits can struggle with loneliness, be introverts, wise, whimsical, live a life of isolation/solitude, struggling to look closely at themselves, be too reliant on others, etc. empresses can be powerful, passive, feminists, creatives, dislike themselves, lack ambition to take initiative, struggle with pregnancy, have romantic complications, etc. and world people are either victorious or losers, they let go easily or can't move on in life, they celebrate themselves, be grateful for what they have, tend to be mature, they can lack closure in life, etc. some of the options i could think of as to who these karmic tail people could have been are a single mother, a monarch/queen/princess/duchess/lady (princess diana, is that you?), a famous female writer (it's giving sylvia plath), a convict, a prison or psych ward attendant, a woman who died in child birth or getting a back alley abortion, someone who had an unexpected death, someone who died alone, someone who struggled with self-esteem, etc.

devil, hierophant, and strength - makes my skin crawl honestly... but first let's quickly break down the energies. devil people can be confrontational, have self-destructive thoughts/behaviors, cope in unhealthy manners, etc. hierophants often learn and teach throughout their lifetime, they have a traditional mindset, power, rigid beliefs, can be very close-mindedness, etc. strength people can overcome most things they believe are in their way, they are courageous, confident, fear looking weak, despise looking vulnerable, etc. some of the options i could think of as to who these karmic tail people could have been are abusive parents/partners, addicts, people who abuse their power, bullies, those that play unfairly, etc.

hermit, hermit, and moon - i have a lot of friends with this karmic tail and i constantly talk with them about what it could mean, but let's again break down the energies. hermits can struggle with loneliness, be introverts, wise, whimsical, live a life of isolation/solitude, struggling to look closely at themselves, be too reliant on others, etc. moon people are familiar with their shadow-selves / primal-selves, constantly looking for ways to change/evolve, are spiritual, can be closed off to change, etc. some of the options i could think of as to who these karmic tail people could have been are witches/wizards, garden hermits, psychologists, those who struggled with mental health, etc.

they saw you in a space where you were able to show your dedication to some type of work. i feel like there’s an energy of basic respect that you give to people as well as a fixation on dedicating yourself to a practical task at hand, so this person could have met you when you were in a school or a workplace? they definitely saw you as someone who kept to themselves - maybe even quite guarded to protect yourself from others - but it seems like you have a high level of intuition too. for a few of you, this could be someone that you didn’t trust (and maybe you still don’t). if that resonates, i’m seeing this person viewing you as someone who’s a great judge of character, either when it comes to other people or them in particular. you could’ve seemed quite to yourself, and somehow this person saw something about you that made them feel like you were a homebody. there’s a certain level of confidence to you though. your guardedness didn’t come across as something to protect someone who’s weak and defenceless. it came across as someone who just was not with the bullshit. whatever you were focused on, that’s all that you cared about and you didn’t seem interested in anything else. there’s somewhat of a defensive energy that this person picked up from you as they felt as though, if they crossed your boundaries in some way, you’d bring hellfire upon them lmao. you had a very strong, but reserved first impression to this person. there’s a message about you refusing to play games with this person, so maybe they tried to get under your skin or flirt or just step out of bounds for the environment that you were in, in some way? you put an end to it though, and i feel like this person’s first impression of you left them quite intimidated.

do you guys have a witchy aesthetic? there’s a message that for a lot of you, your person automatically could tell that you were either a witch or a mystic in some way. they saw you as a creative and someone who had a different type of lifestyle to them. if not a witch, then they saw you as someone who they had been manifesting. it’s like this person had a sudden awareness that you were who they had been manifesting or that you were the physical embodiment of what they were conjuring up in their minds. you seem very introspective- constantly in your head but somehow not coming across as flighty or ungrounded. you actually give off an extremely grounded energy to this person with some type of responsibility towards something - you guys could have met at work or in a professional setting like pile one. this person also saw you as either very financially stable, or stable within your self esteem. but you didn’t come across as someone who was actually involved in your external world. they could have seen you as quite a loner tbh. but they could tell that you’re content with being alone. that you’re alone most of the time but not lonely. they could have seen you as quite a serious person too, who diligently focused on whatever you were responsible for in that moment. i’m also hearing “steady work ethic”. there’s an energy of naturally creating something? or naturally achieving success with something with little effort. your stare/eye contact is also very piercing. it could have made this person freeze. i’m seeing them view you as someone who could see right through things - including them. maybe you just automatically knew something about them or their life? as if you had known them for a while when you hadn’t. i’m also hearing “high standards”. but in terms of respect. this person could tell that disrespecting you in some way would be the wrong move. if they actually did, then they’re stupid 😂.

this person may have projected some of their own issues onto you upon first meeting you. it feels like this person was intimidated by whatever power they sensed from you, but because they couldn’t understand why they felt that way, they demonised whatever quiet power they saw in you and decided to see you as someone stuck up or on some type of high horse. they felt like you were extremely observant and quiet, but also not afraid to speak up when you wanted to. and i’m hearing that they felt like you had a very short, direct way of communicating. maybe they even felt like you were judging them in some way - even if you didn’t even speak to them - but you looking at them made them feel very insecure, and instead of admitting that to themselves, they decided to see you as someone who was doing something negative. you very well could have been judging them but that’s because this person has some weird ego problems or forced masculinity that you could see through. i feel like this is a masculine person who was intimidated by the masculinity they saw or felt in you, but they couldn’t understand why because you don’t look like the type of person who they’d usually be intimidated by. so you must be doing something to purposefully trigger them, right? 🙄 they saw you as someone who was uncontrollable. you actually took control over certain situations. if this masculine person tried to throw some shade your way, or said something out of line, it was a weak attempt at trying to fight off your energy (the energy that makes them feel so insecure). it was like they were trying to get you before you got them in some way. but you took control over those situations and i’m seeing that you didn’t even need to say or do much. you could have smiled or laughed at any shady comments they made and it made them feel even weaker. you seem very wealthy in some way - either in money or self esteem or both - and this person felt like they were not in control in environments around you. they could be the type who wants to try to “control the room” with their presence but with a forced persona. you did this naturally and they got intimidated. they recognised your power from the get go and realised that it was the end to some type of communication style or way of thinking of theirs, as they knew that it wouldn’t go over well with you. they could be used to being disrespectful to people, but they couldn’t be that way with you. you’re also very natural too, which adds to your power. you might wear no/minimal makeup, you might not hide behind materialism like they perhaps do. you’re what they would praise on someone that they’d look up to. but i’m hearing that something about you makes them feel like they should be the one to fit that role out of the both of you. clearly not 🙃

growth in witchcraft as shedding of snake-skin

Sort of obvious, but I had to learn it (like everything else) the hard way. And as spooky season approaches and people may be revitalizing their practices after breaks, I want to say something that might end up saving a couple folks from a lot of frustration and heartbreak:

Just because it worked that way for you in the past, doesn't mean that's how it works for you now.

I mean this in a literal, making-stuff-happen with magic and sorcery way.

You guys have heard the adage that some spirit guides are with you for life, some for short periods, some for just one lesson, etc., right?

Well, the same can be said for sorcerous techniques.

I don't know if I just shed techniques like hermit crabs shed shells or what, but this happens to me a lot. Here's the kind of thing I mean:

You used to do readings with a specific little ritual involving a prayer and incense, but now that technique seems to produce incorrect readings. It feels flat and you can tell you're not connecting.

You used to be able to tie intent into knots and carry the thread around with you all day to conjure specific little occurrences, but now it barely seems to work and manifestation is spotty.

You used to be able to converse with spirits by going into a deep meditation, but now when you try you can hardly connect and it's like their messages are getting blotted out.

And I think sometimes when these things happen, people tend to process this with:

self-blame (I'm not a devoted enough witch, I brought this on myself!),

scapegoating spiritual allies (I used to pray to Hekate before divination but now my divination doesn't work, so Hekate must be mad at me), or

developing personal doubt (I used to think magic worked but now I can't replicate my own results).

When the reality is, if you're a magical snickity-snek and you've shed your skin, you might be slithering about in the soil trying to do the little old things that no longer fit the bigger, better you.

Sometimes this "shedding" is very obvious and we can feel and taste it. "Shedding" may come before, during, or after a period of intense personal transformation. It may come in a numinous moment when you hear a single phrase, or view a single image, that makes you become the Hanged Man and see reality in a whole new way.

But it can also happen without us really noticing it. I might put down my tarot cards for a couple months, pick them up again, and suddenly the ways I used to read don't work for me any more.

It's not because I'm a bad reader, or that the spirits have abandoned me, or that magic isn't real.

It's because what used to work for me doesn't any more, and now I just need to find new techniques.

So if you're trying to pick up what used to work and it just doesn't seem to be helping any more, consider that it's just like outgrowing an old set of clothes. Nothing is wrong with you, or the clothes. It just doesn't fit any more.

Since I think it'd be frustrating as hell to read a post like this without some actionable steps, below the cut are some ideas that might help you develop new techniques if your old ones seem to be failing you.

Start with your beliefs

Examine your own rituals and see if what you're doing still matches what you believe. Let's say you used to pray to Hekate and light incense before divination, but now you do that and your divination doesn't work.

Do you believe Hekate is allowing your divination to be possible? Do you believe she's the best goddess to seek aide from at this time?

What role does the incense play? Is it an offering to Hekate? Is it to feed the ancestors who supply you with interpretations? Is it just to set the correct tone and atmosphere?

Maybe you've grown in your relationship with divinity, and you now believe it's more proper to call on gods with formal prayers - but your divination ritual still uses a simple, improvised prayer.

Maybe your understanding of Hekate has changed and it feels more suitable to call on different powers.

Maybe you feel strangely about constantly "paying" gods to help you, when they say they don't need it - and lighting the incense makes you feel awkward.

Change what you're doing to match what you believe. That's always a solid first step.

Examine your own emotions and reactions

Try performing rituals (from the smallest ritual of stirring intent into coffee, to full-blown compass-casting affairs under the full moon) mindfully.

Be aware of what you're doing as you do it, but also try to examine your own reactionary thoughts and feelings.

Suppose my ritual of stirring my coffee seven times clockwise to manifest a desired emotion doesn't work any more. It used to work great, for years, so I do it quickly. But now it doesn't work, so I do it mindfully.

And while I'm stirring, I watch a few thoughts pop up to the surface: why am I doing this seven times? I'm stirring my coffee for too long and staring into it like an idiot, and it's embarrassing. What if someone thinks I'm weird?

If any individual step of a ritual makes you feel embarrassed, stressed, or avoidant, or if you feel relief from not having to do that any more - that technique is probably not serving you very well.

Seek out methods that make you feel excited, hopeful, empowered, or interested. Or, at the very least, ones that don't make you feel bad.

Be open to shifting your paradigm entirely

Going back to the stirring coffee thing, maybe I think stirring seven times is too much. So I try to stir my coffee three times. But that still feels clunky.

Then I get into left-handed vs right-handed stirring, because someone might have said that doing stuff with your right hand is for blessings.

Then I try out a new little inner mantra while I stir X times with Y hand.

But it's just not working. No matter what I try, it feels like walking barefoot on a gravel road.

So maybe I just need to do something entirely different.

Maybe numerology isn't my thing any more. Maybe now, I just need to embrace my inner divine creator.

Maybe I should think about the ultimately powerful creative energy within rich, black soil - and as I pour my coffee, I can imagine that I'm pouring pure creative energy into my divine cauldron. When I sprinkle in a little sugar, I'm seasoning that creative power to my personal tastes - and no matter how many times I stir it, when I drink that creative power, a new reality blossoms from within me.

No numbers. No memorized chants. No left hand/right hand stuff. Just me, imagining myself as a planet, drinking pure creative energy that will bloom out of my aura as wildflowers bloom in the spring.

Ask for help

I'm not called fool for no reason, and after a couple years of being unable to astral travel - after having successfully done so for years - I finally sat down and asked my spirits for help.

The answer was immediate and simple. So simple, in fact, that I was confident it wouldn't work at all.

Well, of course it worked. I spent years trying to figure out the problem on my own, trying time and time again to use an old technique that I was confident would work. It took a goddess like four seconds to tell me the new way it worked for me.

Even if you're not in communication with spiritual allies, you can still perform divination to help troubleshoot your own magical skills. Try asking a series of questions: what doesn't work for you any more, what you should try, and what you should avoid trying.

When divining, consider the different "levels" of application. A reading that means "don't use excessive force" might refer to high-level life stuff, like, you're working too hard on all your responsibilities right now, learn to relax and the magic will come. But, it might also be referring to something very specific, like, you're trying to raise huge amounts of energy in individual rituals, break them up into smaller spells where much less force is required for each one.

This week's spotlight is on Beth Fuller and her comic Witching Hour. Beth is an illustrator and concept artist from Dublin, Ireland. She’s considering putting down the stylus pen and heading off into the wilderness to live as a hermit, but likes hot showers and horror films just enough to keep her in civilisation. For now, anyway. "Witching Hour is about a young girl sent on a mysterious journey by her father. Two pale trees with intertwined branches form a strange gate at the edge of 12-year-old Esio’s town, and beyond it lies an old, ruined land. Over their pints, as dusk falls, the villagers say it’s where lost things - and people - eventually end up. She’s got sandwiches, an apple, plasters, a bottle of Tipperary Kidz water and a Horrible Histories book in her rucksack and she’s heading off into the unknown, with only a talisman to guide her. There’s no telling who she might meet along the way."

"That’s the initial rundown, anyway. Speaking more subjectively, I wanted to create a setting where two totally different characters - as different from each other as you can get - are forced to work together and end up changing each other’s lives. I really do think you can get on and find common ground with almost anyone, in the right circumstances."

Witching Hour took several years to incubate. "I’d been working on a comic slowly and haltingly since I was 18. There are pages kept deep, deep in my computer with old, badly drawn versions of Esio in a radically different setting, but it never really made sense as a story. I don’t think I made it past page three! Still, the fantasy atmosphere and character of Esio stuck with me over the years. Plus I really like to mix the dull, routine and mundane aspects of everyday life with things that are otherworldly and strange."

"Eventually we had a visual narrative module as part of my degree, and while recalling my old comic pages (I was mulling over it in the shower, which is where I think many of us do our most important thinking) an idea came to me that would form the basis of Witching Hour. Adding this to the embers of my previous project gave me more than enough fuel to sit down and start drawing.

"I have plenty of ideas for what I want to get up to next. I’ll work on a tarot set, keep working on freelance concept art and illustrations, design some tattoos, maybe try my hand at another comic at some stage. As always, feel free to get in touch and let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see from me!"

Beth draws inspiration from many sources: "The landscapes of south-west Ireland. Horror films, foreign language films, fantasy films, anything animated. The writing of Michelle Paver, Neil Gaiman and Ursula LeGuin.

"For me, though, it’s primarily the work of other illustrators that has inspired me the most, and it’s often only through seeing and evaluating lots of different brilliant styles that you can start to discern your own tastes. As a child, the obligatory Ghibli film catalogue. Then the work of Chris Riddell, Max Prentis and Ian McQue were enough inspiration to foster an interest in art school. I went, studied Illustration at DJCAD, and discovered Jake Wyatt, Celia Lowenthal, Juliette Brocal, Linnea Sterte, Jack T. Cole, Evan Cagle, Alphonse Mucha and (of course) Moebius. Seeing their work is like taking the creative spark and making it into a deodorant flamethrower."

Beth's work often centres around fantastical worlds and sweeping landscapes. "I think somehow you always come back to what you know. Sometimes you don’t even notice you have a fascination with something until you start to create and it keeps returning.

"My family and I spent a lot of time around Irish coastlines growing up, especially during the warmer months. Kerry, in the south-west, has mountains that turn brown in winter, then when summer comes are carpeted with a haze of purple heather, not unlike the hills of Scotland. There are crumbling ringforts and monastic ruins on isolated hilltops. I could be in the most beautiful place in the world but still miss the coconut scent of Kerry gorse. The fantasy aspect is fun to play with, and it adds a nice sense of mystery, but fundamentally I think the landscapes I draw are an attempt to capture, and return to, the shores I kicked about on as a kid."

For aspiring comic creators, Beth has this advice: "This is a common one, but I think it’s still worth saying: if you have a story, get it down. You don’t need to consider yourself a comic artist to make a comic. You also don’t need to wait around for the right time, or enough expertise - nobody is going to give you a nametag with ‘comic artist’ on it. If you can draw, and you need to say something, just start drawing boxes and see where it goes. Also, ‘Necropolis’ by Jake Wyatt is really good."

neither! it's more like a scab :)

no it does not, at least by my understanding of what a catalyst is in this context

hmm i'm gonna go with no

can? yes. should? no. safely? well, tango's still alive, so...

the general consensus is that yes, it is dangerous, though the extent of the danger is unknown. safety measures are taken out of an abundance of caution

Are there people who believe that it should not be used?

probably. none of the hermits, obviously, but it would be very easy to disapprove of from a number of angles. at least a few people being Anti Redstone seems pretty much inevitable

*How does Redstone react with Skulk?

Would Redstone ever be considered a fashion statement, and if so, as what kind of clothing piece?

not clothing but i bet there's some level of prestige associated with the color of redstoners' eyes. whether they're considered good or bad would be pretty context-dependent though

no, but you could probably dye clothes with it

Can Redstone be used as a spell component for witches and evokers?

i don't think evokers have much use for it, and i don't think witches use extended potions (could be wrong there, but also i don't consider the witches to be canon to the game lore)

the stone itself exists in unknown but presumably finite quantities, the signal it emits is infinite

Will Redstone alter properties of inherently magical things, like end crystals or totems of undying?

i don't think so? it does extend the duration of potion effects, though

You know, it always puzzled me a little when people talked about the Beauty and the Beast story... And everyone pointed out that the prince is turned into a Beast because he is vain and selfish. Which, I never understood because I didn't remember that. (What's more, I NEVER saw the entire Beauty and the Beast movie. Don't ask "why" because I don't know.) Now, after years, I realized why.

The story I grew up with didn't say that. This version of the fairy tale was different and had the witch as a capricious woman.

The prince in this version let the witch into his castle to take refuge from the cold. When the blizzard ends and the witch retreats. But not before giving the prince a gift for his hospitality. Which was a very beautiful rose. He refuses her gesture of gratitude and she becomes angry. He gets so angry that he curses him, turning him into a beast. Destroyed by this, the prince locks himself in his castle. Becoming a hermit, bitter and resentful. He becomes like this because he is bitter that they turned him into a monster just for doing a selfless action. What Bella does in this version is help him open his heart again and it is this warmth that helps break the spell.

I mean... In this version, which was in the teacher's book that my grandmother had, the only bad one was the witch. And I grew up with this moral of life of "You must be careful who you are kind to because not everyone will return your kindness." So I don't know how to feel 😂

taking notes, nodding thoughtfully while reading your lily thoughts and I realized I struggle to understand her as a character because everything she is in canon is so muddied by who she is in relation to everyone else. I want her to have a hermit era where she locks herself in her apartment every night learning some new little craft just for the satisfaction of mastering it and I want her to have a going out era where she’s at the bars every weekend and everyone’s watching her but she only dances with her friends and always goes home alone. Like I need to her to live her best life outside of who she is to other people, and see how that’s realized for her. What crafts would she learn behind closed doors, what’s her getting ready routine?

I’ve had friends who feel very much defined by who they are to other people and the expectations surrounding them and it’s interesting to question their conception of themselves - a lot of times, I’ve found they don’t have the words to describe themselves without invoking other people’s opinions of them, even if it’s just an attempt to diminish the reality of those opinions (ex. “I’m not *that* good at piano” etc etc). I want to know how Lily would describe herself and what she sees when she looks back on her accomplishments.

this is such a beautiful message, it’s so thoughtful and well-put. i agree that i find her challenging to pin down because she only (canonically) exists in relation to others but that struggle is what always brings me back to her…

i tend to see lily as profoundly lonely but in a secret way that only makes her more Singular. i think her private life (her getting ready routine!! her daily rituals!!) is extremely well-cultivated because she is used to being misunderstood/projected on but it’s the fact that she appears so self-sustaining that gives her that special halo she has. lily always has little private things it seems she’s doing just for herself (it’s to make the daily experience of Being Herself feel more bearable… she’s trying to assert borders on the nothingness by giving herself Things Lily Does) but it makes others want to watch her and guess at what she’s thinking.

the flipside of this question, to me, is also that it is addictive to be loved in the way that lily is. she doesn’t have a clear picture of who she is (profoundly lonely also means empty) and it can be freeing to have an outsider offer a flattering one for you: when she’s the object of love, she’s a beautiful intelligent witch and even apparent flaws like her temper become charming & palatable facets of this picture. it feels really good to be that girl.

i think it’s less a question of expectations and more one of definitions. her relationship with petunia interests me the most because her sister refuses to see her as Special, and if lily isn’t Special then she’s nothing at all. and that’s really horrifying but it’s also part of her reality.

to me, what happened to her (dying young and getting made into a saint, essentially) is the best thing that could have happened - because she in a sense escaped her own self and Became “that girl” permanently in collective memory. i think she’s pathologically committed to her own self-mythologizing and that’s an answer itself.

So far, we've got Tango in Gobland, Scar in Tumble Town, Pearl and Joe in Chromia, Cleo and Xisuma in Eversea, Keralis and Jevin in Sanctuary. Impulse and Grian are kind of making their own places. Did I miss anyone?

There are two kinds of emperors in this crossover: the ones who stick to the lore and claim they don't know the Hermits and the ones who drop everything and yell "MY RANCHER!".

Pix fits the second category, though a lot quieter.

Pearl fits the first, which is strange, considering her role as Literally God. At this point we really can't be sure of what exactly this means for Pearl or for Sausage. What is she?

Gem is her own category. There's something very sus going on with her.

Jimmy absolutely freaking out over seeing Tango again though-

I think at this point it's canon that either people have nametags floating above their heads or everyone is wearing an actual name tag and that's how they all know each other's names even though they never met.

Scott just got a magical flash grenade to the eye. How is this man seeing anything after the entire sky erupted in magic light-

Sausage. I'm not surprised. Not even disappointed. Xisuma most certainly is, though.

Is it a custom in Sanctuary to kiss people on the cheeks or is Sausage like... actively making out with newcomers? I know this is a very weird question, but it's Sausage we're talking about.

Why does only Pearl get an outfit change? I mean, I know why, but like, canonically speaking, why did it happen?

Still, I felt a bit teary-eyed upon seeing the Arena Duo together again, the Gilded Helianthia dress only made it better. I missed these guys interacting so much, and I don't know if I'm in denial like Sausage or if I'm just about to open a Word document to write an entire one shot about it-

Ok, so apparently some people remember the Life series and some people don't. I guess that means that some of the characters, such as Jimmy, Joel and Scar, are the same characters from the Life series after they lost their third life. Other characters, such as Scott and Pearl, are not. But what does this mean?

Fwhip sounded so hurt for a moment when he thought Jimmy made Scar his new deputy. This man is not ok.

Seeing the empires from the Hermits' perspectives is crazy, I hadn't realised just how massive these empires got.

The Hermits are staying for a while. I'm so happy this isn't going to be a one-episode thing, I'm dying to see where this goes!

(I'm trying to watch as many perspectives as I can. Some of them haven't come out yet, and I don't feel like watching Keralis' hour long episode. Can someone tell me what happens there?)
