Alla Nazimova, born Marem-Ides (or Miriam Edez Adelaida) Leventon in Yalta to Jewish parents, was once the world’s highest paid actress. She was also credited as “The Founding Mother of Sapphic Hollywood” and even coined the term “sewing circles” to refer to secret society of lesbian and bisexual actresses.
Her early life was marred by abuse from her father and fear from fleeing pogroms in her home country. But acting came as her escape, and it was a profitable one.
Nowadays, the pioneering actress is rarely remembered, but one brand still carries a perfume they made especially for her in 1914. Caswell-Massey’s “Marem” has top notes of red current and neroli, middle notes of eucalyptus and Crimean rose, and base notes of amber and cedarwood.
A bold fragrance for a bold woman.

I don't normally post this kind of stuff but I've been wanting to share some research photos I took at the Fragonard Perfume Museum when I visited Paris in the Summer! I took loads of photos as research for my comic Séverine’s Perfumery, but these are the highlights. It's free to visit and very beautiful so I would so recommend going!
From left to right:
1.) Perfume organ, used by perfumers to arrange raw materials!
2.) Nécessaires de voyage (essentials kit for travelling), Paris, c. 1809-1819. It was a gift from Duc de Berry to his first wife Amy Brown and holds a hundred objects, including toiletries, perfume bottles, teapot, coffee pot, hot chocolate pot, sugar bowl, candlesticks and tools for sewing and writing.
3.) Nécessaires de voyage close-ups.
4.) Enfluerage board.
5.) Corset bottles: Jasmin, Lotus flower and Lilac, Ahmed Soliman, c. 1920.
6.) Selection of 19th century perfumes.
7.) Crystal and pink gold flacon, France, c. 18th century.
8.) Muguet (lily of the valley) flacon, Guerlain, c. 1900.
9.) Flacon from the workshop of Bernard Perrot, France, c. second half of the 17th century.
10.) Perfume nécessaires (essentials) in the form of a book that Marie Antoinette used to offer round to her guests c. late 18th century.
11.) Flacon in the shape of a knight, France, 19th century.
12.) Nécessaires (essentials) case holding 13 toiletries, including a mirror, London, c. 1760-65.

hey gang, lets all agree that if youre going to class, do not put on ten pounds of perfume/cologne. a spritz is fine. but some people get sick from them and if people can smell it from across the room, you are obstructing peoples learning/life

“The bitumen seal was key in preserving the patchouli’s chemical signature. Not only did the seal keep the fragrance inside the bottle, but it also trapped the perfume molecules through a process called adsorption."
I love that rich-ass Romans probably smelled like a head shop.

Roman bird-shaped glass vessels were used as perfume bottles. The liquid was sealed inside the vessels and the tip of the tail had to be broken to remove the perfume. The one pictured (c. 1st century AD) is still intact and filled with the scented content.

Somber, sultry and Swedish, Greta Garbo is one of the first names that pop into our minds when we think of the best of classic Hollywood. While her most famously remembered lover is her frequent costar John Gilbert (and possibly a dalliance with German author Erich Maria Remarque), she is now known to have been bisexual, and counted among her female lovers Lilyan Tashman, Louise Brooks, and the author Mercedes de Acosta.
And what sort of fragrance did the “Swedish Sphinx” favor?
“Vent Vert” by Balmain, a dizzying and fresh mix of greenery.
First launched in 1947 and later reformulated in the 90s, the original was a concoction invented by Germaine Cellier. The top notes are violet leaf, bergamot, neroli and narcissus, while the middle notes are galbanum, basil, hyacinth, narcissus, lily-of-the-valley, rose, freesia, geranium and jasmine. Finally, the base notes comprise of oakmoss, sandalwood and musk.
Other favorites were the chypre floral “Ivoire de Balmain”, and The Crown Perfurmery Co.’s “Tanglewood Bouquet”, which was an amber floral.
Each fragrance has one thing in common: they are as bold and arresting as Garbo herself.
