#PrideBookstagram Day 26: Peter Darling by Austin Chant⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ I've been wanting to read this for a while and finally got to it last month. I guess @minavesguerra 's tweets about it pushed it up the TBR. 😁 And it was indeed great! 💙💙💙⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ This Peter Pan retelling starts somewhere after the original story ends and is told in a format that slowly unravels and upends what we've all known about the classic tale. I will have to admit that I struggled with the first few chapters bec Pan here is quite annoying and he makes really careless decisions that got into my nerves. And then I realized I was feeling that way bec that's exactly how boys who never want to grow up are: reckless and immature. It only made me love the writing more and when it becomes clear that the key to solving all of Pan's problems lie within an acceptance of himself, I could no longer put the book down!⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ The pairing is M/M with a trans character and I must say, I haven't read a lot of fiction with sensitive and respectful trans rep, but this does it exceptionally. CW to some homophobia and a bit of violence, but it wasn't excessive and it was necessary for the character-driven plot to get a move on. I loved that the sexual tension was subtle enough to match the whimsical tone of the book, but still very much there especially towards the end.⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ I highly recommend this esp to those who are looking for great trans narrative. Gelegentlich sehe ich irgendwas, bei dem mein Hirn denkt: Das ist so absurd/seltsam/schräg, das ist bestimmt super, das muss ich probieren. Ja, das ergibt keinen rechten Sinn. Meist bereue ich es. Aber auf die Art lernt man wenigstens neue Dinge kennen. Von Sellerie-Limonade kann ich aber nur abraten. Weil ich vergangenen Monat ja Peter Pan gelesen habe, hat mir das Internet ein Buch namens Peter Darling empfohlen. In der Kurzzusammenfassung stand irgendwas davon, dass Peter ins Nimmerland zurückkehrt und - ja - eine Affäre mit Hook anfängt. Und mein Hirn dachte: Das ist so absurd, das muss ich lesen. Gott, habe ich das bereut. Es war nicht das schlechteste Buch, das ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe, aber definitiv in den Top Drei. Ich bin bei 102 Büchern, also rechnet es euch aus. Das ist so absurd, ich weiß gar nicht, wo ich anfangen soll. Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass Hook am Ende von Peter Pan stirbt und Peter das Nimmerland überhaupt nicht verlässt, bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob der Autor seine Vorlage überhaupt gelesen hat. Offen gesagt: Ich glaube nicht. Die Ursprungswelt wird hier genauso ignoriert wie Logik, Charakterentwicklung, sprachliche Qualität und Dinge, die nur zwei Seiten vorher passiert bin. Zudem ist es auch noch furchtbar kitschig. Grauenvoll. Liest sich wie eine wirklich - wirklich! - schlechte FanFiction. Recently someone I follow online recommended this book to me. So of course, since I have no self control, I bought it. ✨ It's a Peter Pan story, although I might not call it a reselling exactly. #PeterDarling is a fantastic book. It's a queer retelling of Peter Pan, with Peter as a trans man. I love how it was written and Peter and Hook were especially so well written. 🇬🇧⠀ OMG, I waited sooo long to read this! Okay, it only was a week and a half but every time I saw the book, I wanted to start it…⠀ ⠀ I didn't though and all because of #TheReadingQuest! I read all the books for my Knight quest first so I could read @austinchanted's Peter Darling for the fairy tale retelling part of the Bard quest - and yes, I'm counting Peter Pan as a fairy tale - if it has a Disney version, it can be considered a fairy tale and woe those who disagree 😂⠀ ⠀ Anyway, back to the book: It was awesome!
