Chapter 419 Analysis or "How to completely break Tenko Shimura" a manipulative guide from All For One (part 1)

This is mainly a character analysis of Shigaraki Tomura or Shimura Tenko, any other character present is there to help.

Chapter 419 was hard to comprehend even with just summaries right on April 4th. Some things need at least fan translation to fully make sense. Or just hurt more in that matter.

Warning of spoilers to the whole manga to the point of chapter 419! All of the warnings from the respective Tomura chapters are applicable.

So like... mentions of death, killing other people, manipulation, emotional abuse and many more!

This is going to be long! So let's start, shall we?

First of all we'll need to take into understanding ALL the chapters that we'll need to remember/reread just make this chapter worse (skip if already familiar with them):

This is your "Tenko and Tomura understanding" starter pack, basically. Without them it's harder to even start unpacking what just happened with Tomura's perspective in mind

Well then.

The chapter starts and we are immediately greeted by AFO semi-agreeing without wanting to, that Tomura was strong enough before Izuku started trying "saving" him in his own way and even succeeded making Tenko's will all the more fragile than it was when he returned using his hate to his advantage.

Even after Izuku holding Tenko's hands for the whole chapter he was still stubborn enough to continue even without that hate in his heart

And the thing that initial summaries missed was the fact that Tomura actually reacted to AFO reapperance.

Still not understanding why AFO was even saying that.

Tenko was literally taught by AFO to follow "what he wants" in ch 237 with Tenko making his first decision to kill someone himself. And never actually hiding that Tomura just needed to never forget that hatred and those bad emotions that Tomura never really understood. And it took Izuku seconds to decipher them.

With AFO reassuring Tomura that he has no need in following morals of society and just should follow whatever he wants - his want to destroy everything that hurts him. And only AFO would accept and help him. He was constantly reminded of that.

Even if Tenko was feeling sick from killing at first, even if hands that he wore were still making him sick 15 years later without him understanding anything. Decisions made while person is emotional are usually the ones that the person might regret the most and Tomura lived with those unstable emotions for years. Knowing that they hurt him and make him feel sick.

But Sensei said that it's okay to follow those emotions. That's it's actually great that he does it.

Everything was for his sake, everything was for Tomura Shigaraki and Tomura Shigaraki only. He was his Sensei's successor and no one should argue with it. He's the only one to be next ruler of the underground and the next king. And Tomura gladly accepted that as truth.

Since it was easier than facing his guilt.

Because AFO just needed Tomura to have enough willpower to get OFA when the plan is ready. To make Gigantomachia to follow him while Garaki was watching knowing full well how the plan is going. Both knowing full well that Tomura is still holding himself back.

In this chapter however we finally see how all of the things AFO told and taught Tenko were just to make him so sure that HE was in control and allowed to do whatever he wants to completely break his worldview in the end "after he gets OFA" which is an unreachable goal now since OFA is gone for good.

By just saying that Tenko never had any choice to begin with.

Tomura already knew that AFO manipulated him and he was just a pawn, needed only to get OFA and piss off All-Might he accepted and embraced it as something unimportant. It was his choice and he was free to do it and not feel bad about it. Since he's born to destroy.

Until suddenly it wasn't just his life after Decay that was manipulated.

But his whole life from birth. Just because AFO didn't get his hands on Hana sooner and she was happy while AFO needed someone hurt and broken. And Shimura's household wasn't as bad as he needed it to be at first with Kotaro loving his children, wife, in-laws and even his mother.

And AFO destroyed it by creating so much conflict and even going out of his way to make sure Tenko's father knew that he was playing heroes with some kids. And even saved them by putting his own quirkless life in danger.

In some sense narrator-Tomura's words at the end of ch 236 still might hold true. AFO didn't just create his hate out of nowhere, to make it feel like even if Tenko remembers everything it's still he's doing not a villain appearing, not just some accident that it actually was.

Although AFO doesn't say anything about people who didn't help Tenko even though he he knew that it happened so he most probably was watching it happen until Tenko lost all hope entirely to finaly make him dependent on his help.

And he succeeded for the most part.

Tomura was making an assumption after he remembered everything that he "must've been yearning for that" and from that point onwards explains everything that happened as "I wanted it - I did it" and was clinging to it like a lifeline to explain everything.

He accepted that if Re-Destro is talking about his Decay quirk affecting him he exists only to destroy.

And now it seems he found a false motivation for himself that AFO created by cruely manipulating everything from his quirk to his family. Making him believe he had a hand in it. Breaking one of "safe" truths that Tomura never doubted. They only made his decisions feel right.

Which makes that a hopeless loop of broken memories being staged just to let Tenko become Tomura who hates and destroys everything believing that it's his choice. Only choice at that.

And if destroying is him only choice because of his quirk... then what can a quirkless person do while having so many people dead from his own hands? Hands that were literally cursed to have destruction quirk in them not because he was born to do it. But because his own Sensei wanted that.

And he's "unwavering heart" is now nothing but an illusion that was destroyed by both Izuku and AFO together.

There's no "Can I be a Hero?", because can he even be a Villain if most of the choices that were from Decay and the hatred in his heart weren't actually his own?

I'm so looking forward to iroh and zuko properly talking and seeing irohs reaction to zuko being gay.

Like we all know he doesn't agree with the fire nation rn but how will he react?

Will he not support him cause sokkas a guy? Will he not support him because it's SOKKA? Will he accept him? Will he reveal he's known for years zuko was gay?

Especially with everything that happened with zhao, regarding to what jee said to bato on their date. (Which is a very understandable perspective, zuko just got out of this very sexually traumatising situation and almost immediately starts a relationship (his first relationship) with sokka, but then again it is a very unique situation)

One thing I love about some atla fics is how they portray the FNs thoughts on queerness, cause on one hand they were one of the only country's (I think) that treated men and women the same but then again it's also the fucking fire nation.

And I also think zukos whole canon arc can be very comparative to queerness,

His dads an asshole and after speaking out against him he throws him out, and zuko try's for 3 years to regain his father's love and acceptance, and then faced with the opportunity of regaining it takes it immediately regardless of who or what he may hurt (iroh, his own morals etc) but once he makes it back home realises how fucked up everything is and eventually confronts his dad and openly tells him he doesn't agree with him then runs aways.

I also wonder if iroh secretly knows jee is queer it doesn't seem that likely to me but it also is iroh so who knows.

I do think Iroh’s reaction will be a big moment for not only the story but for Zuko’s character development. Right now, Zuko’s technically still a prisoner, holding himself there by assuming Iroh will not understand or judge him when in reality he’ll never know what his uncle is thinking until they TALK ABOUT IT. (Which the FN royal family is just sooo good at healthy communication I don’t understand why this is so hard for them lol?!)

I do agree that the suddenness of the relationship combined with the intensity from both zuko and Sokka is very alarming for people looking at it from the outside (I mean we all totally get it cause we were there but others are like uhhhh hmmmm ok this might be concerning) so I get them gossiping and wondering if this is truly real or what the fucks going on with those boys.

I love Zukos canon arc because there’s just so much about zukos story that can be relatable no matter who you are and I think that’s why he is a fan favorite (it doesn’t explain why we torture him the way we do but ehhhh it’s fine haha)

Fortune Amidst Misfortune (more lore)

From nearly the beginning, Fortune Amidst Misfortune held little interest for solving the Great Problem. Soon after his creation, his interest was caught by the biological behaviors of his parents' species, the Ancients, which quickly expanded to the biological mechanisms of all natural species. He kept only just enough of his processes dedicated to the Great Problem to keep his creators satisfied, and when they faded out of existence, he wasted no time reclaiming his processing power back from the useless simulations.

Fortune dislikes social interactions with both the Ancients and other iterators. He can appreciate the social behavior from a distance, but being forced into one-on-one interactions make him incredibly uncomfortable and tense. His small local group were quick to realize this, except for one: Thirteen Thoughts of Lights Above (redesign pending).

Thirteen Thoughts of Lights Above is especially oblivious, but well meaning. She is considerably more "mechanized" than the other iterators, and has difficulty with social cues. She only ever reaches out to communicate to her neighbors with good reason, but she tries her robotic best to be short yet polite about it. Fortune is more tolerant of her then he is with the rest of the local group.

(Insert here a few dozen cycles of sparking interest in yellow lizards specifically. Fortune raises a handful of these genetically altered lizards, training them as best as he could while in his stock bipedal puppet. Fortune did manage to figure out a way to disconnect and reconnect himself with his umbilical, but his experience while detached was so horrible that he only did it a couple times and never again. And then the antenna-less yellow was born, and the pack project was discontinued.)

And so when Fortune Amidst Misfortune could no longer emotionally nor physically handle being stuck in his stock puppet (with its thin, too fragile build), he eventually had to turn to Thirteen for help. He has only basic knowledge of engineering, and something as advanced as building a new compatible, maneuverable, and sturdy puppet is out of his capabilities. Thirteen was happy to lend her knowledge and be of assistance. Besides for her, Fortune kept his puppet-revamp hush hush (at least until later on, when investigating overseers spill the secret).

Nowadays, he mostly spends his time researching the wildlife up close and getting assaulted in return. His can, settled into the side of a cliff above a biologically diverse hotspot, has two wings dedicated to holding subjects of study (mostly genetic experiments fueled by curiosity, with the occasional pity-case).

Slugcats would be the obvious choice for any genetic tampering, with how malleable-yet-stable their genes are, but... among his first experiments in the beginning, Fortune abducted a few specimens from the nearby colonies so that he could sample their DNA. And although they were later returned to the wild more-or-less unharmed, they must have somehow communicated their experience with the rest of them, because after that point Fortune would be harassed on sight whenever he got anywhere close to the colonies. So, slugcats? No longer a viable option.

Fortune tries to keep a code of ethics when working with his specimens: no harm without cause, no releasing unnatural organisms into the environment, etc. And he mostly succeeds at this! But there was one notable case of several breeding specimens escaping: batfinches. A splice of batflies and vultures. A small, gas filled prey animal. They invaded the local ecosystem, and even though things balanced out with time, for a while they had been devastating the lowest tiers on the ecological pyramid. They're pretty cute though, so worth it maybe?

Enter the current era with his darling devil lizardslug, Nips at Neurons.

I think this diagnosis of fascistic beliefs (which is correct, imo) requires a companion diagnosis of this as an overt expression of white supremacy, ie the ideological support system for settler colonialism. Because while I’ve found that Adorno is very good at breaking down fascistic beliefs into these little component parts, and identifying how absurd antisemitism is in a very precise way, there isn’t really a discussion of whiteness as a historical force included in here. Which is crazy right! Whiteness undergirds modern fascist movements and it’s impossible to understand them without it. Why are these people so obsessed with hierarchy and feelings of entitlement? The answer is that like, the very concept of whiteness only works in relation to domination and dispossession. You do not define a portion of humanity as the supreme race if not for the purpose of dominating “subordinate” groups. The invention of that hierarchy is itself violent because it requires violence to be meaningful in the world.

So who is a fascist? Someone who takes the concept of whiteness seriously, not just in the sense that they believe white people are superior to everyone else, but in its totality; as something that has a geographic element to it, that requires both blood and soil to be realised in society. American patriotism is the celebration of this exact conquering of both people and place. This is why the modern right whines so much about affirmative action programs, political demands for reparations to black and indigenous communities, and various minorities filling positions of power. Territory, even as minuscule as more racial minorities being given the opportunity to go to university, is being “given back” to the people they stole it from, or in their view, being “stolen back.” And if it’s being given back then whiteness is becoming less powerful in the world, which means they themselves are becoming less powerful. But because this view of the world forecloses the possibility of them wondering if maybe racism is wrong, the only explanation fascists can muster is that they are being victimised by people they view as subordinate, and they feel as though they are being exploited, and that justice can only be served when their property, both material and political, is returned to them.

So like yes I think this quote above is correct, but a big missing component of this research is looking at white supremacy. Adorno talks a lot about fascists being a product of mass capitalist society, but capitalism is itself rooted in white supremacy and colonialism. And I know fascists movements around the globe are not all strictly white (Japan, for example), but white supremacy is the dominant expression of racial supremacist ideology in the world, and the reason for that is, again, European colonialism

And as for DrauKarna, Ah! Yes! I remember how I'd read 'Palace of Illusions' and loved it to bits, (and the StarB cast was SO GOOD-LOOKING and GIF-worthy that I'd absolutely loved that pairing to bits, and have written quite a few works on it myself, none as good as the ones that already existed :P), and now, if I write about them, (not sure if I shall in the same vein as before, since C. Rajagopalachari's version has really served to un-ship in my mind), it might be in some other form. Maybe an alternate universe in this day and age? Maybe some other version in the same timeline and universe if canon-compliant (certainly not in a romantic sense)? But if inspiration does happen to strike and blow my writers' block to smithereens, and I'm back to my full-fledged amateur writing, then, surely, but in a different form, and possibly with a LOT of warnings?

That last writing with Tarrow is beautiful. In my mind was playing Farewell by Bernth and is was a struggle to not cry in public.

I just fell in love with Orion! I love his gentleness, how he just want to give comfort and just AHHHHHH!! That last paragraph just with the hope that Tarrow will see the family that still has is just gets me.
