Police in the Turkish city of Adana detained 11 suspects, five Israeli and two Syrian, on allegations of organ trafficking, the Daily Sabah reported on 5 May. The Provincial Directorate of Security's Anti-Smuggling and Border Gates Branch began investigating after examining the passports of seven individuals who arrived in Adana from Israel about a month ago by plane for the purpose of health tourism. The two Syrian nationals, ages 20 and 21, were found to have fake passports. Further investigation revealed that Syrian nationals had each agreed to sell one of their own kidneys to two of the Israeli nationals, ages 68 and 28, for kidney transplants in Adana. During searches at the suspects' residences, $65,000 and numerous fake passports were seized. Israel has long been at the center of what Bloomberg described in 2011 as a “sprawling global black market in organs where brokers use deception, violence, and coercion to buy kidneys from impoverished people, mainly in underdeveloped countries, and then sell them to critically ill patients in more-affluent nations.” The financial newspaper added, “Many of the black-market kidneys harvested by these gangs are destined for people who live in Israel.” The organ-trafficking network extends from former Soviet Republics such as Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova to Brazil, the Philippines, South Africa, and beyond, the Bloomberg investigation showed. Accusations of Israeli involvement in organ trafficking also apply to the occupied Palestinian territories. In 2009, Sweden's largest daily newspaper, Aftonbladet, reported testimony that the Israeli army was kidnapping and murdering Palestinians to harvest their organs. The report quotes Palestinian claims that young men from the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip had been seized by the Israeli army, and their bodies returned to the families with missing organs. "'Our sons are used as involuntary organ donors,' relatives of Khaled from Nablus said to me, as did the mother of Raed from Jenin as well as the uncles of Machmod and Nafes from Gaza, who all had disappeared for a few days and returned by night, dead and autopsied," wrote Donald Bostrom, the author of the report.Bostrom also cites an incident of alleged organ theft during the the first Palestinian intifada in 1992. He says that the Israeli army abducted a young man known for throwing stones at Israeli troops in the Nablus area. The young man was shot in the chest, both legs, and the stomach before being taken to a military helicopter, which transported him to an unknown location. Five nights later, Bostrom said, the young man's body was returned, wrapped in green hospital sheets. Israel’s Channel 2 TV reported that in the 1990s, specialists at Abu Kabir Forensic Medicine Institute harvested skin, corneas, heart valves, and bones from the bodies of Israeli soldiers, Israeli citizens, Palestinians, and foreign workers without permission from relatives. The Israeli military confirmed that the practice took place, but claimed, "This activity ended a decade ago and does not happen any longer." Israel’s assault on Gaza since 7 October has provided further opportunities for the theft and harvesting of Palestinians’ organs. On 30 January, WAFA news agency reported that the Israeli army returned the bodies of 100 Palestinian civilians it had stolen from hospitals and cemeteries in various areas in Gaza. According to medical sources, inspection of some of the bodies showed that organs were missing from some of them. On 18 January, the Times of Israel reported that the Israeli army confirmed reports that its soldiers dug up graves in a Gaza cemetery, claiming its soldiers were trying to “confirm that the bodies of hostages were not buried there.”

A boy who is jaded before his time meets an earnest hottie when he moves to a new town and school. Feelings ensue.

This one puts the com in romcom, with a confused bisexual chaos muffin setting off a comedy of errors as he tries to figure out who actually likes who among his classmates.

Takara-kun to Amagi-kun

A simple story of two boys trying to navigate their first relationship and figuring out how to go about dating and interacting at school.

Eternal Yesterday

On the tragic end, this is a story of first love that ends abruptly due to accidental death. The story is an exploration of the grief and stunted growth that results when someone so young suffers a loss so monumental. It's an absolutely beautiful show, but not a light watch.

This is a gorgeous show about a brash and loud and proud gay kid who gets sent to live on a small island after an incident at school, and decides to create an LGBTQ+ club at his new school. This one has a social education agenda, but it's also very funny and sweet.

South Korea

Light on Me

The story of a confident gay boy and his love triangle where you will actually like everyone involved! A rare gem in these drama streets.

Where Your Eyes Linger

And on the angstier side, this one is the story of two friends, one of whom has been raised to be a caretaker/bodyguard for the other, struggling with a realization of feelings between them. The power dynamic and social class divide between them feature heavily.

Taiwan

History 3: Make Our Days Count

Possibly a controversial pick, as this one has a tragic ending that is hard for a lot of people to stomach. But it's a great high school show that includes two first love stories, one between a beautiful himbo and the studious boy who catches his eye, and the other between his very sweet best friend and an older man he meets through his job.

About Youth

This first love story between two very nice boys struggling with school and family issues manages to be incredibly sweet while also dealing with some heavy topics, and features a couple amazing original songs that still get stuck in my head all the time.

The On1y One

This is such a pitch perfect high school story that I'm putting it on this list before it technically finishes airing. Two high school boys meet when their parents move in together and decide to get married, and begin to heal each other. This one nails the angst and yearning.

Thailand

My School President

Possibly one of the cutest high school romcoms of all time, and it features a student band so there are a ton of original songs. This is a story about a boy who runs for class president just so he can save his crush's music club. It's two nice boys who like each other and the shenanigans they get up to with their friends.

I Told Sunset About You

And for the completely opposite experience: the ultimate angsty coming of age queer awakening story. One of the most beautiful dramas I have ever seen, and so evocative and emotionally resonant that it is actually hard for some people to watch because it's too real.

Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove (Gallicolumba luzonica)

Found only on the island of Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines Archipelago) the Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove is one of several species of “bleeding-heart doves”, so named for the unusual bright-red patches on their chests which bare an uncanny resemblance to a bloody wound (complete with paler red markings surrounding the vivid red center, making the feathers appear blood-stained.) These bright red markings are present in both females and males, and while their exact purpose is the subject of extensive debate it is generally assumed that they are related to sexual selection; males typically have larger, redder “wounds” than females, and during courtship they produce loud, hooting calls, puff out their chests and “bare their hearts” to potential mates, with females seemingly preferring males with louder calls, bigger chests and redder markings. Rarely encountered in the wild due to their extreme timidity and near-total silence outside of courtship, Luzon Bleeding-Heart Doves inhabit lowland forests and are unusual among pigeons in that they are largely terrestrial, foraging for fruits, seeds, insects and worms on the forest floor during the day and taking flight only at night to reach safe roosting sites in the branches of trees - even when threatened by potential predators (such as monitor lizards and birds-of-prey) they are more likely to flee into dense vegetation than to fly away, despite being fully capable of doing so. After forming a bond members of this species typically remain together for life, foraging and roosting in pairs and working together to defend their nest and raise their young; Luzon Bleeding-Heart Doves are believed to nest in trees towards the end of Luzon’s dry season (during the early-to-mid may), with females laying 1-2 pale white eggs which both parents incubate (with males typically sitting on their nest during the day and females sitting on it overnight.) Young Luzon Bleeding-Heart Doves hatch after around 16 days of incubation, fledge when around 2-3 months old and are mature enough to find partners of their own after roughly 18 months.

Desperate to “finish off” the revolutionary armed resistance of the Filipino people, the US-Marcos regime’s armed tentacles is carrying out a rampant terrorist and fascist rampage throughout the country. Marcos and the AFP are set to make one false declaration after another that provinces have become “insurgency-free,” especially in areas that have long been targets of foreign corporations for mining, plantation and energy projects. At the behest of US imperialism, the AFP is also in a hurry to “end” the armed struggle of the Filipino people so that the US military can fully employ the AFP in its war of provocation against China which is likely to intensify in the coming year.

Marcos and the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have recently ordered an all-out war. The declared aim of this war is to dismantle all NPA guerrilla fronts by the end of March, destroy all NPA combat units by the end of June, and destroy all regional Party committees before the end of the year. Thousands of military troops, alongside police combat troops and tens of thousands of paramilitaries armed by the AFP, have been dispatched to ravage the countryside.

Hundreds of villages are being garrisoned by Marcos’ fascist minions. Oppressive soldiers are controlling people’s lives and livelihoods, silencing them and trampling on their rights and freedoms. Checkpoints and food blockades, prohibiting people from working in their fields or swidden farms, armed soldiers occupying barangay centers, going house to house and forcing people to “surrender,” harassing young women or even married women, all-night drinking, beatings and altercations, indiscriminate firing of guns—this is how people perceive the rotten soldiers. Amid drought and disasters, fascist soldiers are like pests who bring nothing but disaster to their communities.

Using powerful weapons such as drones and jetfighters, helicopters and howitzers, Marcos’s terrorist soldiers are bombing mountains and fields, indiscriminately firing night or day, destroying the forests and poisoning waters, shattering the peace and causing deep trauma to the people, especially children, pregnant women and the elderly. These result in unnecessary number of lives lost, contrary to all principles and laws of civilized warfare.

The evil aim of Marcos is to instill fear in the hearts of the people and force them prostrate while allowing their land to be grabbed by big foreign capitalists and their partner comprador bourgeoisie and big landlords. But instead of falling on the ground, the people are more and more roused to stand up and fight, and tread the path of armed revolution.

In the guerrilla fronts across the country, the units of the New People’s Army (NPA) continue to enjoy deep and widespread support from the peasant masses. Military officers of the AFP and the reactionary state are furious that despite their intensified all-out war which has lasted for almost seven years, the peasant masses continue to provide political and material support to the Red fighters. Young farmers, as well as young students, workers, as well as professionals continue to join the people’s army.

The people’s desire to carry forward the armed struggle continues to burn. Amid fascist attacks perpetrated by the armed minions of the US-Marcos regime, and oppressive policies that worsen their plight, it is becoming clearer to the minds and consciousness of the peasant masses that they completely have nothing if they do not have the New People’s Army on their side to defend their lives and rights, and to fight with for their land and livelihood.

In recent years, the NPA has suffered losses and setbacks in various parts of the country due to the errors and weaknesses of conservatism and complacency with its previous accomplishments. Instead of boldly treading the path of continuous expansion and invigoration of the armed struggle, the scope and mass base of guerrilla units were reduced, and units became passive and vulnerable to enemy encirclement. Under the guidance of and inspired by the Party, the NPA is determined to rectify errors and move forward on the path of strengthening and galvanizing the people’s war.

In the spirit of the rectification movement, the NPA must more vigorously wage armed struggle in all parts of the country. Utilizing the broad mass movement in guerrilla warfare, they must use all weapons—guns and rocks, spears and punji traps, shotguns and landmines—and carry out large or small tactical offensives that can be won against weak and isolated parts of the enemy. Strike at the enemy’s fascist troops and all its tentacles by way of rendering justice for the people and inspiring their resistance. Only by waging widespread armed resistance can the NPA consolidate, overcome setbacks and strengthen.

Since its establishment, five and a half decades ago, the NPA has served as the true people’s army in promoting the revolutionary aspirations of the Filipino people for national democracy. On its coming anniversary on March 29, let us celebrate its accomplishments for the past 55 years, pay tribute to all the martyrs and heroes, and reaffirm the determination to advance the protracted people’s war, without fear of sacrifices and hardships, to achieve ultimate victory in the future.

Remembering My Son: A Journey Through Grief

Twelve years ago, my life was forever changed when my baby boy, Miguel Deandré Lamanero, was born on June 7, 2012, at just 37 weeks. Unfortunately, he passed away on July 21st, 2012, just three days after I returned to Manila from Bahrain. I was still a teenager back then. The time we spent together, although brief, was filled with love, challenges, and immeasurable heartache.

When I first learned that Migo had Congenital Heart Disease, disbelief washed over me. It felt like a vice grip around my heart, squeezing the joy out of my life. The diagnosis was a devastating blow. Migo had a hole in his heart and needed to be monitored closely in the hospital. He was transferred from Amisola Maternity Hospital to Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, and eventually to the Philippine Heart Center, where he would spend the rest of his days.

Migo’s battle ended with Multiple Organ Failure, and to this day, I struggle with feelings of blame and unanswered questions. I wonder if the hospital could have done more, or if Migo’s mother’s obstetrician could have made different choices. The "what ifs" linger in my mind, making the pain feel fresh even after all these years.

Despite the grief, I hold onto the memories of our time together. I remember his little ways of expressing love, as if he understood my presence. I sang songs of praise for Jesus, hoping for a miracle while tears streamed down my face. In those moments, he listened, and for a while, that brought me joy, even as I watched him suffer.

Losing Migo at such a young age left me wondering why I had to endure this pain when all I wanted was to build a happy family. I often reflect on how the medical team could have listened to us better; certain outcomes might have been avoided. Yet, life is unpredictable, and it's been twelve long years of grieving.

I just find solace in the belief that everything happens for a reason. My eldest son is safe in heaven, watching over me and his younger brother, Gabby. I remind myself that he is no longer suffering, but the emotional rollercoaster of grief is a journey without a handbook. I now understand the truth behind “love at first sight,” not as a romantic notion, but as the deep, instinctual love I felt the moment I met my son.

Grief is a complex experience, and I often feel as though I’m cycling through different stages. Nighttime is particularly hard, filled with thoughts of him and the emptiness left in his absence. I wonder if I will ever truly get over losing my precious boy, or if I will simply learn to live with this void in my heart.

Even though his mother chose to build a new life elsewhere, Gabby and I remain safe and grounded. I’ve seen many parents take their children for granted, wrapped up in the rush of life. And so I urge anyone reading this that if you have kids or if you are planning to have one, please cherish every moment with your children. Newjeans mira wishing her boyfriend a happy birthday on a fan meeting under the teasing of her members.

Since newjeans third world tour is coming close, newjeans were busy with fan meetings to connect with their fandom more and promote their album and upcoming world tour, where fans collected many ionic interactions of each member.

One of them happened yesterday in their fan meeting in Manila, Philippines. After signing many albums the girls stood on stage to answer questions and play games. Where one of the fans there shouted at mira saying " tomorrow is your boyfriend's birthday, can you wish a happy birthday to him" and on the video taken of the said event you can see Mira's face turning red and the members teasing her to wish him a happy birthday till mira submitted to their wishes under the overwhelming pressure.

As the girls interacted with their fans, a voice from the crowd shouted, "Mira, wish your boyfriend a happy birthday!"

Mira on stage, instantly froze. Her face flushed a deep shade of red, and she stared wide-eyed into the sea of fans. The sudden mention of him caught her off guard.

Minji was the first to catch on, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Oh? Whose birthday is it today, Mira?"

Hanni leaned in closer, her grin widening. "Yeah, Mira, why don't you tell us? We’re curious!"

Danielle giggled, nudging Haerin. "I thinksomeone’s trying to avoid the question!"

Haerin, with her usual calm demeanor, added, "But we all heard it, didn’t we?"

Under the barrage of teasing, Mira stuttered, trying to form a coherent sentence. "I-I… umm… happy b-birthday…"

"That’s all?" Hyein teased, crossing her arms playfully. "Come on, you can do better than that!"

A fan from the audience chimed in, "Say more! We want to hear it!"

Mira, still blushing furiously, took a deep breath and whispered into the mic, "Happy birthday… Oppa." Her voice wassoft, almost drowned out by the cheers of the crowd. But the girls weren't going to let her off that easily.

Minji leaned closer to Micha, egging her on. "You’ve got to give him more than that. Say something sweet!"

With her heart racing, Micha finally relented. "Happy birthday, Oppa… I mean, happy birthday to you! You're getting older, huh?" She giggled nervously, the words tumbling out in a mix of embarrassment and affection. "Don’t tire yourself out in the military… and come back safely. We all miss you, and your fans can’t wait to see you again next year. So, make sure to stay healthy… and do many amazing things when you're back."

The crowd erupted in cheers, their support for the couple evident. But Micha was beyond flustered. Without thinking, she bolted from the center of the stage, ducking behind Minji for cover. The older girl laughed, patting Micha on the head as the audience continued their playful teasing.

"Oooh!" The fans chanted, delighted by the adorable scene unfolding before them.

Hanni couldn’t help but add, "Look at her hiding! Our Mira is so shy!"

Hyein teased, "She’s going to need extra cuddles after this, I think."

Haerin, trying to suppress a smile, said, "That was really cute, though."

Mira, still hiding behind Minji, peeked out shyly, her face still a bright shade of red. She waved at the crowd with a small, embarrassed smile, mouthing a silent thank you to everyone for their support.

As if the sea had sensed its rulers melancholy, it shifted and it hummed amongst the rocks of the royal chambers. It crashed into you like the waves of a full moon's midnight, pelting your eyes with the sting of tears. You know not of the reason for your own sadness, but you knew somewhere in your soul that it was connected to your husband's own sorrow.

He reaches up to caress your cheek, and like a subservient dog to its master, you lean in right away to the warmth of his loving hands. He traced your features, every curve, every freckle, every bump, and every line down to the very last detail. He was memorizing every inch of you. He was burning it to memory.

Prayers and good thoughts for our friend’s mother. She is battling gall bladder and liver cancer and had an ischemia that obligedi the surgeons to remove 70% of her intestine. She will have to live with a colostomy bag permanently. The doctors are waiting for her to be strong enough to submit her to chemo and immunotherapy to reduce the liver tumors. She is still young (78 years old) and also because she spent her life taking care of her children and their father who now has Alzheimer's

Prayers and good thoughts for our friend who is suffering from ringing in her ear. It is constant and she can’t sleep. Neither her doctor or dentist can find the cause.

Prayers and good thoughts for our friend’s husband who is in the hospital with a blockage, he’s been there for 2 days, and his wife is hoping he’ll come home on Monday. She will has had her surgery and is in terrible pain. Her husband is losing his job at the end of June, and her heart doctor said to be prepared for heart surgery once she heals from her foot surgery. She has a leaky aorta valve.

Prayers and good thought for our friend’s brother who was just diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, secondaries in his liver and lungs. We pray for our friend and her sister to have their trip go smoothly as they plan their trip to be with their beloved brother. Also, we pray that their brother will be pain free and that he will be at peace.

July 30th - Monkey Mountain, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Alien Art Center

Cough still present, maybe slightly better. Today, was an early and miserable start. We woke up at 7:15 to get ready for the hike (which was a voluntary choice for some reason). We took the train and then walked about 20 minutes to the start of the trail. I did not know what I was in for. I thought it was going to be an easy hike to see the native monkeys because apparently, they inhabit the trail pretty heavily. We saw some monkeys as soon as we started and I should have turned back. Unfortunately, I decided to stay with the group. We hiked up pretty far and I was feeling good, but we started to realize it was going to take longer than 1 hour. We kept going and decided we would have to take a shortcut because we weren’t going to be able to do the full easy loop. A man speaking Chinese was trying to direct us away from the trail, but none of us completely understood why. So, we headed off to our deaths. This was arguably the hardest trail I have ever climbed in my entire life. Not only was the ground muddy, the humidity and heat were unbearable. Not to mention, the climbing we had to do because it was so steep. Also, most of us had run out of water at this point because we thought we were going for a casual stroll. My heart rate was a solid 179 as we ascended, and I was trying to be very cautious with it and told myself I would stop at 180 because of my health issues. After about 30 minutes of genuine torture, we found a woman who spoke to us in Chinese about getting to the top. She could tell we were struggling and decided to be our tour guide. She had to be about 50 to 60, so it was very humbling. Each of us were drenched in sweat. I had to take my shirt off and it looked like it was dunked into a pool. We finally got to the top and saw a bunch of monkeys, but as far as I was concerned, I was ready to leave. The woman who was our brand new tour guide said we couldn’t go down the way we went up because it was too dangerous, so we had to go the long way. Finally, we made it all the way back down and I realized I was getting sick from dehydration. I didn’t want to drink any more water, I started shaking, and I started to get very nauseous. I took a Zofran that I brought with me to keep my fluids down and tried to drink my last bottle. When we got back to the hotel, it was already time to start the activities for the day, which included two art museums. They were cool and I saw some pretty art, but the problem is that we weren’t allowed fluids in the museum, so my dehydration was not getting any better. I picked up an apple juice and cookies at the gift shop for some quick sugar, but it made me more nauseous. The fun didn’t end there though because we had to go to another museum, which also did not allow fluids. I was so ready to go back at this point and kept getting worse. Honestly, I don’t remember much of the second museum and I ended up sitting in the bus to cool down. We finally got back to the hotel and I am patiently waiting for it to be time to take my next dose of Zofran. I haven’t been able to eat much or drink, so I’m trying to get some fluids down as I write this.

Academic Reflection

It’s only fair that I reflect on Monkey Mountain (aka Shoushan Mountain). Shoushan Mountain is located in the southwest area of Kaohsiung. It lies 365 meters above sea level and is about 5 km long and 2.5 km wide. The mountain was formed from coral reefs pushed up from collision between the Eurasian and Philippine Plates. It gets its name from the hundreds of Formosan Macaques that inhibit the area. The mountain is also home to some of the earliest archaeological remains ever found in Kaohsiung, dating at about 5,000 years old. The area also served as a military installation during the Qing dynasty. The difficulty is supposed to be moderate, but that has to be for the installed path. I would beg to differ about the difficulty rating for this, but I guess it depends on which way you decide to go. Apparently, from a few blogs I was reading about it, the monkeys are quite aggressive and do attack people if they look at them in their eyes. They also like to steal food. I am glad I got to see it once, but I cannot say I will be going back anytime soon.
