anon i yearned for him like we were in a jane austen novel. his hands, oh my god. his florentine accent & the way he said my name (with an [h] instead of a [k] at the beginning). the almost unbearable intensity of his musicality and his technical control... the expectations he held for me and yet the gentleness with which he treated me. his visible adoration for the material he played and taught. he fundamentally changed the way i engaged with music. i still can't hear beethoven without thinking of him or perform mozart without hearing his voice in the lines

did i spend three hours learning how to use audacity because i couldn’t get the idea of a merthur song duet out of my head? maybe. was i unable to edit the whole song because the rest of it was too complicated? maybe. but at least i have a physical example of the concept now even if its super messy. i can finally sleep in peace

Hello! I made this little zine called Music Theory: A Small Guide of Reminders.

These are shorthand notes, charts, and drawings that I used when I was studying music theory that I now teach my students, approached from the pianist’s perspective. From beginner to advanced, all compact to fit in a pocket or pencil case.

It is one page of notes in the front, with optional second side that includes manuscript paper and an extra keyboard.

every time. every time without fail, that i go on a Dethklok/Brendan's music overall binge as I have been lately. I find myself looking at my guitar like. If only i knew how. if only i could do it right. I could hold her and shred and have fun making music.

*to clarify, I struggle to read music & learn by ear, but my memory also struggles with remembering chords/finger placements/tabs so even tho i can usually hear how a song should go enough to identify notes & whatnot, and can, with enough time spent noodling, eventually recreate it on guitar. That is not conducive nor useful in actually playing and getting better at it and makes it feel like an Impossible Task lmao.

this belongs in a long form essay but i think all the time about “i want to be great or nothing” but it’s not even that i’m not great or maybe more like that i couldn’t become great it’s that i have been forcefully barred from greatness by my economic position. not just in arts like all of my dreams are so unachievable that i’m languishing away as a bottom feeder retail worker. and i’m not happy to do it i hate my job and i’m unfulfilled in every regard but moving to a 9-5 that would supposedly grant me more time (“supposedly” but like at least i’d have weekends and consistent scheduling) wouldn’t grant me the funds to pursue anything meaningful. because entry level office jobs sometimes make less than i do right now at fucking target
