2024 in Mittens Fic
It’s once again time for the annual accounting of things I have written! This year's stats are pretty deceptive, since i posted over 266k words to ao3 across five works. Unfortunately one of them is my SPNGeorg podcast notes (which i've all but abandoned for now, also unfortunately... unless you're excited that this means my brain wants to focus on writing fic more than podcast notes...) hopefully that bodes well for 2025 (for which I already have 42k written that will post in this year's upcoming pinefest!)
SO. If you take away the podcast notes, at over 180k... this has been my smallest fic year ever, at 85,721 words posted.
Tumblr media
For reference, past year end summaries can be found here:
2023 | 2022 | 2021 | 2020 | 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | the closest thing I have to a 2015 wrap up post is the lil bit of text at the bottom of 2016′s post… even though my two most popular fics were from 2015 lololol
Ignoring the SPNGeorg podcast notes, that still leaves me with FOUR posted fics from this year, which is way better than none! :D
First up was my Dean/Cas Pinefest fic, Given to Fly (60,952 words, rated E) (and while you're there, check out all the other incredible Pinefest 2024 works!). It's a modern AU, with Dean and Cas in the Navy and a very season seven vibe (in case you enjoy watching Dick Roman get his comeuppance in addition to destiel pining).
Next up was a fic I started with the intention of submitting to the DCBB but yet again missed the draft deadline. Loose Ends (20,763 words, rated T) is technically part 3 of my Evergreen series that began with one working part back in 2023, but can be read as a standalone. It's a post-Chuck world, Dean and Cas are together, and a fairy case leads them down a rabbit hole of fanfiction of Chuck's Supernatural series, and some major revelations about their own past.
(almost entirely) Sweet Sixteenth (982 words, rated T) is a short and sweet destielversary fic, also loosely set in the Evergreen 'verse. A camping trip goes very wrong.
Merry Beachmas (3024 words, rated T) is also set in Evergreen, my annual holiday fic. Wherein the entire gang decides that since Chuck is gone, they need to start making up their own holidays to celebrate. Once again, things go slightly awry. (and if you're still in a holly jolly mood and just want more destiel holiday fluff, i now have a decade worth of it right here)
And that's it for this year! Sadly! But again, I already have nearly half of this year's total ready to go for next year, so hopefully there will be much, much more to come!
I'd really better get on that, because my To Be Written list has continued to grow despite my best efforts to actually corral the thing...
Thanks again to everyone who’s read, kudos’ed, commented, reblogged, liked, rec’ed, and enjoyed anything I’ve written in the last year. I love you all. <3 See you in 2025!

This is my first time participating in the @deancaspinefest and I was super excited and lucky to get paired up with @dothraki-shieldmaiden on their story What Stays (And What Fades Away)
It’s an amazing story and they’re have a way with words I couldn’t help myself and got a little carried away with my illustrations for their story.

Sugar and Smoke
You will need: + One (1) pastel-sweater-wearing church-bake-sale angel + One (1) cuss-happy BBQ lumberjack who doesn’t measure ingredients Instructions: 1. Combine ingredients: put competing tables side-by-side at the community fair. 2. Lightly grease with food appreciation, flustering, and friend-opposed flirtation. 3. Add your desired flavour! Have lumberjack invite angel to his housewarming party. 4. Knead, allowing a mutual failure to impress to become longing. 5. Prove for 1 hour. Watch as after-party conversation thrives towards an intensely passionate cook-off. 6. Now add heat! Watch inhibitions melt away until prim angel is an indecent wreck, and lumberjack is divested of shame. 7. Separate, then reunite and add sweet toppings for best effect. You now have a beautifully earnest relationship! Scrumptious!
I got to illustrate the fanfic Sugar and Smoke by the amazing @almaasi for this year’s @deancaspinefest! Don’t go into this fic hungry or you’ll be craving all the delicious food in no time. 😋 Go read it now ♥

First Love / Late Spring
Five times Kai asks Cole to marry him, and the one time Cole (sort of) says yes.
a/n: word count- 3322, tw- mentions of injury
1  (in their first year of friendship)
Kai Smith was not a professional blacksmith.
Say what you will about his weapon-making and metallurgy abilities, but unlike his parents, he lacked proper training and technique; he supposed that was why Sensei had him spending the day hunched over the furnace, practicing crafting weapons. The fire ninja couldn’t complain too much, though, since a certain earth ninja was also instructed to accompany him during his practice.
Kai ceased hammering whatever it was he was trying to make and frowned. What was supposed to be a chain on a nunchuck looked...nothing of the sort.
“Cole Brookestone,” he offered up said metal band to his friend, “will you marry me?”
A barely fifteen-year-old Cole put his hand to his chest and gasped. “I- I don’t know what to say,” he smiled, “I’m honored, truly.”
Kai slipped the dingy, ring-shaped metal onto his finger and smiled, feeling his face warm and his stomach swoop.
“Unfortunately, I am going to have to decline,” Cole said solemnly.
“What? Why?”
Cole laughed. “Your execution was lousy and informal.” He inspected Kai’s homemade ring on his finger as the fire ninja scrambled to his feet.
“It was perfect, I got on one knee and everything,” Kai sighed, a smile still remaining on his face. “But If you’re gonna reject me, I want my ring back.”
Cole held his hand with the ring close to his chest, laughing again in the same way that made Kai’s face burn. “No way. This is mine now.”
Kai jumped, reaching for the ring, only for Cole to dodge. Despite his youth, the earth ninja was still considerably larger than Kai, so a little game of keep away was no trouble. Still, he let the red ninja continue to play this game.
“But you rejected me! It’s mine!” Kai pounced again, this time landing a hit on Cole’s chest, prying his hands apart.
“I rejected you, not the ring!” Cole cried in between giggles.
Kai wrapped his hand around Cole’s waist and pulled him close, still wrestling to get the ring from his finger, even though he knew it was futile. “Me and the ring are a package deal,” he scowled, a shimmer in his eye.
Cole picked Kai up, tossing him over his shoulder with ease. Kai could feel Cole’s back tense as he began carrying him out of the little blacksmith’s shop, laughing so hard he’s nearly in tears.
“Fine!” Kai half shouted, half laughed after a few moments of playful struggle, relaxing against Cole’s shoulder. “I give up! The ring was ugly anyway.”
Cole set Kai down, a triumphant grin on his face. “Yeah, it was ugly. I like it.”
2 (post mortem)
Kai stood at Cole’s closed door, unsure of whether to knock or not.
Not one person had gotten a wink of sleep since returning from Yang’s temple, especially Cole- though that was probably because he didn’t need sleep now.
Of all the things that could have gone wrong at the temple, why this?
Kai sucked in a breath and knocked on Cole’s closed door. A soft “come in” sounded, though it had a ghastly and fazed edge to it.
“Hey,” was all he said, pushing his way into the familiar room.
Cole was just sitting (hovering?) on his bed, blankly staring at nothing in particular. He hummed in acknowledgment.
“I was, uh,” the fire ninja rubbed the back of his neck, stumbling on his words. Cole would know what to say in a situation like this if any other teammate had been turned into a ghost, but all the things Kai wanted to say stopped at his tongue, like a barrier was holding them back. “I was just checking in.”
“I’m fine.”
FSM, what a liar. Even Kai wasn’t dense enough to fall for that.
“I mean, you can talk to me about it, you know?” Kai made his way from the door to the little space beside the earth ninja on the bed.
As he sat down, a chill ran up his spine. The air around the new ghost was cold and illuminated by soft green light that was produced by Cole’s new form-- it was weird, seeing someone Kai had always looked up to as strong and indomitable seem so fragile and weak.
“I know. I’m fine. Thanks for checking,” Cole turned his face away from Kai.
Kai sighed, making an attempt to put his hands onto Cole’s, to no avail. When Kai’s warm hands phased right through the earth ninja’s, he flinched.
“Please talk to me,” Kai said softly, failing to add because I need to hear your voice.
There was a beat of silence. When Cole didn’t respond, the red ninja tried again. He shifted his body to face more openly towards Cole, who was still staring off into the space just beyond the floor.
“Can you make yourself solid?”
“No.”
Kai felt a little part of himself die when he heard those words. He shifted closer to Cole cautiously and cleared his throat. “Can you try for me?”
Now, Cole looked up and met the fire ninja’s eyes. His face was smaller than normal, eyes drawn wide into a scared expression that took Kai aback.
The ghost forced a small smile. “I already have tried, Kai, it’s no use,” his voice was muted. “I can’t hold anything and I can’t feel anything and-”
“Try for me now, okay?”
For a moment, it seemed as if Cole was going to protest, but he quickly shut his mouth and instead nodded weakly. Kai stood and rummaged around his room for something small that Cole could hold.
Cole was an organized person, but he didn’t really have many trinkets lying around that would work. He was organized and was not a compulsive hoarder, and it was in times like these when those two qualities were not good things.
Kai thumbed through the drawers of Cole’s nightstand, looking for a rock, a pencil, or anything, before his eyes landed on a small shiny ring.
Well, maybe calling it a “ring” was subjective.
Kai held up the small metal band he had made while he was supposed to be practicing blacksmithing almost two years ago, showing it to Cole.
“You kept this?” he asked, surprised.
Once again, the black ninja gave a small nod.
Kai felt his stomach turn as light as a feather and a blush creep into his cheeks. “But--it’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Kai laughed, moving closer to Cole. “Why did you keep it?”
“I wouldn’t throw away a ring my fiance gave me.”
The fire ninja remembered the conversation he had with Cole that day in the blacksmith, when Kai had fake-but-not-really-fake proposed to Cole with this ugly ring that wasn’t even supposed to be a ring.
Kai was a much better smith now than he was two years ago.
“Hold out your hand and concentrate,” Kai ordered. Cole extended his hand and closed his eyes shut.
When Kai slipped the band onto Cole’s finger and let go, the ring stayed in place. The ghost opened his eyes slowly, curiously looking at his hand, as if checking to make sure it was still attached. When he saw that the ring was still on his finger, he smiled.
“Kai, I feel it.”
“Well, now you have to marry me,” Kai said with a click of his tongue.
Cole laughed, and this time it was genuine.
3 (but it was forgotten)
“It just doesn’t make any sense,” Kai shook his head. “Why Nya?”
“Cause she looks like some other chick named Delara? I dunno,” Cole sighed. “Maybe you should wish for Nadakhan to marry you instead.”
Kai leaned against Cole’s shoulder, sticking out his bottom lip way too far for the pout to be real. Cole just rolled his eyes, making himself corporeal to accommodate the fire ninja putting all of his weight on to the ghostly earth ninja.
The Bounty’s room was completely empty save for the two of them sitting at the table, and Cole was silently thankful for that; it was pretty par for the course for Kai to be all over people, but if Jay knew that Cole wasn’t directly opposing Kai’s clinginess, the lightning ninja would never let him live it down.
“Maybe you have a point,” Kai smirked, now sitting upright. “Who wouldn’t wanna marry me? I’m awesome, I’m funny, I’m--”
A hand flew over Kai’s mouth, silencing the fire ninja. Cole glared hard at him though a grin remained on his lips.
“I’m literally begging you to shut up. It was a joke.” Cole slowly retracted his hand from the now silent Kai.
The fire ninja waited for just a moment, letting his eyes meet Cole’s, before whispering under his breath “I’m really hot…”
“Oh, shut up!”
In a swift motion, Cole had Kai pinned to the ground, knocking over multiple chairs in the process-- but just as soon as the ghost was solid enough to tackle Kai, he phased through him.
In all fairness, it took a lot of concentration just to let Kai lean on his shoulder. He was pretty exhausted from that.
The two dissolved into laughter, then both helping each other stand, tidying up the knocked over chairs.
Kai stopped laughing, turning to face Cole. “I mean, if you were Nadakhan, would you rather marry me or Nya?”
“Nya. No questions asked.”
“Didn’t even hesitate? I’m hurt,” Kai held his hands to his heart. He pretended to be injured for just a moment longer, before asking, “Okay, what if you were just yourself? Would you rather marry me or Nya?”
Cole looked to the ground. If ghosts could blush, he would have.
“I’ll think about it.”
After the events of the following days, neither would remember this conversation.
4 (unrequited)
Kai sat in a chair in the medical bay, bent over with his hands resting on his knees. He bounced his leg to keep himself distracted from the overall disaster that had been that day.
He supposed he was supposed to be happy- his sister just got engaged- what?- and the team had defeated the Oni. It was supposed to be a good day.
But Lloyd had literally died and came back to life and Cole was unconscious after collapsing halfway through the final battle in the medical bay because he fell off of the Bounty. Kai made note that Cole should not have survived, and yet somehow, he did.
So, really, Kai should have been happy; but he was barely hanging on by a thread that was a second away from snapping.
“You missed it,” he told Cole’s unresponsive body. Massive bruises etched their way across his chest and up his neck from his fall.
“Jay asked Nya to be his yang, so, uh, I guess they’re gonna get married,” Kai said under his breath, releasing a deep exhale. He cupped his face in his hands. “I’m happy for them, I guess.”
Truthfully, Kai was. This was his sister and his best friend, and they loved each other, so honestly it was just a matter of time before they got married.
It just felt so wrong to celebrate when one of their teammates was on death’s door.
Zane had told him that Cole was going to be fine. There would be a recovery process, but he was going to live. Still, Kai found himself spending every moment after the final battle with Cole, making sure that he was still breathing and his heart was still beating. Zane had also told him that Cole wasn’t going to go anywhere anytime soon and that he needed to quit being so worried.
With the way he’s acting right now, maybe Kai should have been the one to propose today.
He laughed inwardly, before telling Cole, “If you asked me to marry you right now, I’d say yes.”
His eyes settled on the earth ninja’s closed ones. “Could you imagine? You marrying me instead of Nya marrying Jay?”
Kai hoped Cole would wake up and say something-- he didn’t.
The fire ninja stood from his chair, walking over to the stretcher. He grabbed Cole’s wrist, feeling the pulse, a small reminder that the black ninja was still here. “I can’t marry you if you stay knocked out, though,” he said, tone controlled and steady. “Wake up soon, okay?”
When Cole remained motionless on the stretcher, Kai knew he would not get any response.
5 (sweater weather)
“Kai.”
There was a shiver instead of a response.
“Kai, look,” Cole called again, tugging at Kai’s coat sleeve. He pointed to a coffee shop just down the block with a giant sign on its front that read “SALE.”
“Hm?” Kai hummed, looking in the direction Cole was pointing.
It was a known fact that Kai absolutely despised cold weather. He liked looking at snow, but that was about it. He hated the way it felt, he hated the way it made everything slippery, and he really hated the way it was cold. He was the fire ninja; cold weather didn’t like him and he didn’t care for it much either.
So why in the world he agreed when Cole asked him if he wanted to go walk around town when it was barely 30 degrees fahrenheit and snowing was beyond him, but love works in mysterious ways.
“Do you wanna go get hot coffee? This place is having a sale, too,” Cole said. He looked at the sale sign, then to the door of the shop.
“Oh FSM, yes,” Kai said. He pushed past Cole and into the warm building, not bothering to look at the sign.
Kai hated snow, but maybe it would be bearable if he had Cole by his side and coffee in his hand.
The ninja household was divided when it came to coffee versus tea. They were supposed to like tea, and FSM forbid Wu ever learn that Kai, Cole, and Lloyd prefer coffee to tea. Nya and Zane liked tea.
Jay liked coffee, but he was not allowed to have it anymore following the incident.
Cole knew Kai’s coffee order by heart--medium caramel macchiato with an extra shot of espresso and caramel drizzle-- but his own order changed day to day. More often than not he ordered straight black coffee. Kai liked to joke that it matched his personality, even though it wasn’t true.
Kai watched as the nindroid barista made her way over to two of them and silently thought about how mad Zane would be right now if he knew what the two of them were up to.
Cole ordered for the two of them, then watched as the barista rang up both of their drinks at full price.
“Wait,” Kai interrupted, gaining the nindroid’s attention. “Isn’t there supposed to be a sale?”
The barista laughed. “It’s a couples discount,” she explained, eyeing the two ninja, “so, uh, unless you two married, then your total is $5.99.”
The two ninja glanced at each other, a smile growing on their faces.
“Cole, marry me right now,” Kai said.
Cole stifled a laugh. “In your dreams,” he rolled his eyes. “Unless…?”
The barista smiled and covered her mouth with a robotic hand. “Just for brightening my day, I’m going to give you the discount, bringing your total to $4.20,” she laughed.
Maybe Kai didn’t totally hate cold weather.
+1 (first love / late spring)
Cole was so frustratingly well-spoken.
He was infuriatingly good at saying things. Hell, he could be talking about puppies dying and make it sound like a rhetorical masterpiece. Kai always figured that his natural way with words probably had something to do with Lou being a songwriter, and Cole just being a natural born leader in general.
Kai was not that well spoken, despite what he may tell the others, but at least he was able to talk about his emotions (unlike a certain black ninja).
And that’s normally how their conversations went. Kai would talk about his feelings and Cole would deflect talking about his own and instead formulate some elaborate response to help the red ninja with his issues.
It took Kai by surprise one late spring night when, as the pair was sitting by the pond just outside the monastery, Cole said something weird and vulnerable.
“Do you think you’ll ever be able to have a really normal life?” He waved his hand, facing Kai. “I know that a normal life by societal standards is kind of...unattainable, because we’re ninja, but do you know what I mean?”
“I think so,” Kai said. Warm spring breeze made the water lap at the shore, where the two sat. He stared off into the distance, past Cole, maybe at the pond or maybe he was looking at the tall trees just behind the pond.
“I mean, like, I never really had a normal life, I guess, but I really want normal parts of life,” he rubbed the back of his neck. He really wasn’t sure where Cole was going with this.
He saw Cole’s eyes light up and the black ninja touched his hand in a way that made Kai’s stomach turn to butterflies.
“Yes! That’s what I mean!”
Cole saw Kai’s momentary confusion and elaborated. “I know my life won’t ever be normal but I want normal aspects of life. I want to fall in love, I want to travel, I want to do all these things,” he looked to Kai then back to the water. “We were kinda forced into an adult life when we were just kids,” he said. “It doesn’t feel fair. I mean, Lloyd’s just a tall child.”
Kai picked at the small flowers blooming in the grass where they sat--he was still caught up on the first thing Cole said about falling in love.
“I get it,” Kai said. “I want to fall in love too. And also have a normal life.” He mostly wanted Cole to keep talking.
Kai gathered the flowers in his hand and looked to Cole. He liked the way the moon reflected in his gray eyes, and he liked the way his faint green scar was still visible in the night.
Cole laughed and looked Kai in the eyes.
“You’re one to talk about love, you’ve already fallen for someone.”
For a moment, he fire ninja panicked. How did Cole know? To be fair, he had been pretty direct about Cole marrying him more than once, and Cole was smart…
But oh FSM, did Cole know? Oh fuck.
“With Skylor,” Cole eyed him. “Don’t you remember?”
Thank the First Master.
Kai relaxed. “I wasn’t in love with Skylor, I think I just thought I was. I was in love with someone else.”
Cole smiled fondly, looking at the flowers in Kai’s hands. “Yeah, me too.”
There was a beat of silence as both ninja processed what the other had said. Kai was the first to break the silence, asking, “Well, who was your first love, then?”
The black ninja looked at him for a moment as Kai held his breath.
Please don’t say you love me.
“I think,” Cole paused. “I think it was you.”
Kai felt himself melt, but not because of any fire he could have made or any late spring heat. He felt the sense of normalcy he and Cole had just talked about. He felt himself really in love with Cole Brookestone.
He had been direct before and he was going to be direct again. “I love you too. Like, really. I have for as long as we have been friends.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
He laughed nervously, and then reused the same old joke he had used when he first realized he was in love with Cole, in the blacksmith during their first year of friendship.
“Cole, will you marry me?”
Cole had a glitter in his eye and a soft smile on his face. “Maybe take me out to dinner first?”
“Only if I can call it a date.”
The earth ninja smiled and wrapped his hand around Kai’s. “Deal.”

Title: Cha-Cha-Cha Author: Ebhenah Artist: Daifha Sneak Peek! “Geez!” Lance tsked, “loosen up already!” He shook Keith’s hips playfully, jiggling him back and forth in an effort to get him to relax. He was going to kill Shiro. Dead. “I get the picture,” he muttered, taking a deep breath and willing himself to relax. It was not easy. Being alone with Lance always put him on edge- so worried about saying or doing something that might give away his feelings. It made him tense up. It made him snap and grumble and just generally turn into an awkward mess. There was no way he was going to learn how to do this from Lance. He was just going to get comfortable with the idea that he was going to ruin Shiro’s wedding and his best friend would never speak to him again and he might as well move back into his little house in the desert. “Don’t make me tickle you,” Lance warned, undoing any progress Keith had made in the whole ‘relaxing’ project. “Oh my God, I wasn’t really going to tickle you, Keith! Would you chill out already?” “Sorry,” he mumbled, feeling his face flush. It was just a stupid dance. So what if it meant time alone with Lance? He’d trained with Lance before. Just because this wasn’t sparring and he was out of his element shouldn’t mean that he turned into a middle schooler with his first crush! It’s not like this whole thing he had for Lance was new. He’d been gone on the guy since the infamous ‘bonding moment’, maybe even a little before. That was years ago. He was a grown ass man who had faced down things a helluva lot scarier than Lance McClain moving to music! He could do this. He made his muscles relax through sheer stubbornness. “Alright, let’s try again. What do I do?” The hands on his hips shifted and he pointedly ignored the tendrils of fire that the motion sent snaking out through his skin. “Okay, you know how to move your feet, you are just getting snarled up in when and where… so I’m going to do the steps, and I’m going to move your hips and you are going to do the same steps at the same time. So, all you have to do is not fight me, and follow your hips. Got it?” He was going to die. “Got it,” he replied, nodding once. Want to read more? This fic is coming on September 1st!

Remember Me After The Storm - Art Masterpost
My Art Masterpost for my first of three Dean/Cas Pinefest stories.  I ended up claiming another of @desiraelovesdestiel‘s fics, it’s like I’m drawn to them :)
Tumblr media
Together since college, Dean and Castiel have an idyllic life. Cas is a successful writer and Dean is making a name for himself as an artist. Even after a decade of marriage under their belts, Dean and Castiel are just as in love as the day they were married. But when their Uber is hit by a hit and run driver, Castiel winds up in a coma, only to wake up with no memory of the last twelve years of his life. The last thing he remembers is being next in line to take over the family business, and all but engaged to a woman. Now Castiel has to reconcile what he remembers, with what is. Despite his fear, Cas finds himself drawn to Dean, the beautiful man who looks at him like Castiel invented the stars. Over the course of one snowed-in weekend, Castiel learns a lot about himself, and his relationship dynamic with Dean. The most important thing being that Dean Winchester is, without a doubt, his past, present, and future.
Keep reading for a sneak preview!
“Castiel, what year is it?” Meg’s question startled Dean back to the present as his husband murmured the words that confirmed what he already knew. He thought he might vomit. “2006.” Meg skittered her gaze to Dean. “I’m going to page the doctor again, he must still be stuck in surgery.” “Why? What is going on?  What aren’t you telling me? ” Castiel asked when Meg stepped out to try and find out where Dr. Roche was. “Cas…” Dean searched Castiel’s wide blue gaze, hoping to find one speck of the warm affection that his husband always openly had for him. Instead, he found impatience and fear. “Just tell me what’s going on.” “Cas, it’s 2019. You broke up with Daphne thirteen years ago and we’ve been together ever since,” Dean said it slowly, watching as Castiel processed his words with disbelief etched on his handsome face. “Get out.” The words were growled out and Dean’s heart shattered at the look in his icy-blue gaze. “But Cas…” “GET. OUT.” “Dean, perhaps you should step outside, for just a moment,” Dr. Roche, suggested soothingly, having walked in on the tail end of Castiel’s outburst and Dean could only nod, feeling numb as he staggered towards the door. Dean stumbled outside of the hospital room, throat so tight with tears that the mere act of swallowing burned like fire. He fell back against the wall, the cool surface welcome as he slid down to the floor. Forearms braced on his knees, Dean leaned his head back and closed his eyes and focused on his breathing. He needed to not be a mess the next time Cas saw him. He needed to be good. Dean lost track of the time he sat against the hospital walls. He reached into the pocket of his jeans and dug out his cell phone. He’d texted his brother Sammy after the doctors had rushed in. He’s awake.  He knew when Sam read the message, he’d be grabbing his husband Gabriel and hightailing it to the hospital. Castiel Novak-Winchester, husband and love of his life, had just woken up from a three-day coma with no recollection of their life together.  What the fuck was Dean going to do?

Motels Need Thicker Walls (1037 words)
Best Alpha (3869 words)
Shameless (6841 words WIP)
Food, what food... (485 words)
I usually say something about each fic, but I think I’m just going to look at that list and be happy that I wrote some short fics, and that I took some prompts. Two things that are very difficult for me!
Some of those kudos and hits are from Man in the Wilderness which I technically finished on 12/31/2020, but AO3 sees the whole fic as having been posted in 2021 because I posted the last chapter in the evening.  There’s not a way to separate the 2020 and the 2021 out from the total but lots of them came after it was finished anyway.  Thank you to everyone who took the time to read my stuff, and to show me appreciation for the little things I managed to share, even when I couldn’t appreciate myself.
Special mention to the 40k+ that I wrote over the summer for a fic I wanted to submit to the Pinefest.  I had to drop out, because most of that 40k was rewriting new versions of the first three chapters over and over again, and I was making no progress... but I was writing steadily! It may not have resulted in something I can share with anyone, but it made me feel good to do the writing sprints and track my word count.
My goal for 2022 is to continue to forgive myself for resting, but also to keep poking at my ideas.  I’d love to write more short fics and maybe do more prompts.  And as always, I’ll continue to dangle fresh ideas in front of your dashes just to see you all squeal with delight over all the AUs that live inside my head.
Oh and to keep working on Shameless.  That’s not gonna stay WIP forever!  Even if I have to write something bad lol

2023 in Mittens Fic
It's once again time for the annual accounting of things I have written! I think this year's total fic count, at 4, is my lowest ever, but I still managed more words than my two lowest years (peak pandemic, i loathe you still).
For reference, past year end summaries can be found here:
2022 | 2021 | 2020 | 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | the closest thing I have to a 2015 wrap up post is the lil bit of text at the bottom of 2016′s post… even though my two most popular fics were from 2015 lololol
So I guess my main writing goal for 2024, since I know I will never surpass my 2015 totals, is to just do better than I did in 2023. Here's to more fic!
Tumblr media
I managed a Pinefest fic, a fic I started for DCBB but didn't finish by the draft deadline and posted on my own, an annual destielversary fic, and an annual holiday fic. I think that's the bare minimum of what I try to aim for in a year, so even if I'm personally disappointed I didn't get anything else written in addition to that bare minimum, I'm glad I was at least able to hit that goal. Across this year's four posted fics, there's a total of 110,875 words.
Also, again slightly cheating, but since I've mentioned it for the past two years, I'm still making the @spngeorg podcast! In case the millions of words of meta I've written over the years aren't enough, and you want to hear me yell out loud about the show, you can start from the beginning on Spotify or wherever you enjoy podcasts! Or if that sounds daunting, since I just uploaded Episode 138, 7.12 Time After Time, which makes the backlog a lot to catch up on honestly, you're also welcome to just jump in now. Everyone please come yell with me! I swear, if you do start from the beginning, that I get dramatically better at this whole thing as we go on... at least, I think I have. If nothing else, episodes are far more manageably shorter now that I've developed a system. Only took 2 1/2 years, but here we are... :'D
With that business out of the way, let's break down those numbers! Presented in the order they posted:
Dear Western Red Cedar #2409 (63,433 words rated M) Written for @deancaspinefest with gorgeous art by @alexiescherryslurpy, and inspired by this tumblr post that had been plaguing my imagination for several years. It's a two person love triangle with Forest Ranger and secret bestselling author Dean and small town librarian Cas. Heck I want to go reread it just thinking about it now... this is a happy place fic for me.
one working part (40,051 words, rated E) I started this for DCBB, but failed to make the draft deadline, then finished it before posting began anyway... another canon finale fix-it fic, but this one is heavily It's A Wonderful Life flavored and based on a conversation I had with @greywrenn last year. This story picks up at the beginning of 15.19, and then slowly veers more and more from canon, running alongside canon and making rude hand gestures at canon along the way, because they all deserved to have nicer things than canon gave them.
all the time in the world (1,289 words, rated T) This is my annual Destielversary story, short and sweet. It's set immediately after the events of One Working Part, but you don't have to have read that to enjoy this one. Just know Cas is back with Dean, and they've got the rest of their lives stretched out in front of them.
Christmas, Present (6,102 words, rated T) My annual holiday fluff fic, this time set in an AU, since most of my past holiday fic has been canon universe. A Dean/Cas college AU, with Matchmaker Charlie who just wants her friends to be happy already!
And that's my year in fic (unless I manage to post something else in the next 33 hours or so, and lol no that ain't happening...)! As per usual, I've already written more than half of this year's word total for the 2024 Pinefest, which will post in March... or april... heck when is my posting date even... it's coming soon anyway! But it's all written! :'D
Once again, I've still got so many more stories I want to write. Even the To Be Written list has grown again. My idea list long ago surpassed SABLE status, and yet now there's even more on it...
Tumblr media
It's five pages, and two thousand words longer than it was last year. this just gets worse every year :'D
But that means I'll never run out of things to write, and that's always something to celebrate!
Thanks again to everyone who’s read, kudos’ed, commented, reblogged, liked, rec’ed, and enjoyed anything I’ve written in the last year. I love you all. <3 See you in 2024!

2020 Writing Review
Married ChristmasIt’s the final week of 2020 if you can believe it! I did a post like this last year where I listed all the things I had written throughout the year.
This year, sadly, will be a little smaller than 2019. The pandemic took hold of my writing muse in March and didn’t let it breathe until the end of June, and even then, it had been a struggle until recently. The pandemic took a toll on my mental health, and there were months where I didn’t write anything (between Someone, Somewhere and Brighter is from May to October). You’ll notice there is no coda fic for episodes 12 and 13 and that was because that’s when COVID-19 panic really struck in my area of the country, and I was unable to write them (though they will be written soon).
Despite it all, by the end of June, we took a week-long trip to a beach house, a beach house I know and love, since we couldn’t go to our usual spot in Ogunquit, Maine. It was a responsible vacation with no one with us, not around anyone at all, and only going on the beach in the very early morning and after suppertime when no one was there.
That’s when I started to write my DCBB, ‘Victory’. I wrote 30k during that week and it was like I could finally breathe fresh air again.
It was still a struggle to finish that DCBB, and I thank @cuddlemonsterdean and @malallory for their help with that. And with my Pinefest as well! But when you’re living at your mother’s house with a new puppy and no where to write, I’m surprised I got ‘Victory’ out at all.
So here are some links to the things I wrote this year. It’s not a long list, but I’m hoping 2021 will be fruitful and full of creative energy. I’m finally living on my own again with my writing desk, my white board, and my lo-fi music!
For a preview of 2021, I am going to be working on a lot of fics related to a post-finale world I’m creating based off of things I wanted to see. That will wind up being its own post. I’m excited to get writing in 2021! <3
You can subscribe to my AO3 here if you wanted email notifications of fics

The Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 8 (ish) works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, metas, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome work!
tagged by the incomparable @misha-moose-dean-burger-lover and @friendofcarlotta. Thanks loves.

1. ghosts that we knew--Oh man, this fic. I’ve wanted to write it for two years and quarantine finally gave me the uninterrupted time which I craved to do so. I started writing in May and it was a blast to see this fic come into fruition. I also met fantastic people while working on this fic (you know who you are), so it holds an extra special place in my heart.
2. angel in black--My first try at a gritty fic. It had been sitting in my WIP folder for about six months, and I originally started to post it just to finish it, but I ended up falling in love with it. Not to sound egotistical, but it’s the fic that I get the most pleasure from going back and re-reading, partially because of the witty banter between Dean and Cas.
3. alone together--My quarantine fic! I started writing this fic on March 14, when I got the news that my job was shutting down. I continued writing it all the way through May, when a lot of the lockdown orders were being lifted. A lot of people commented and told them how this fic made their quarantine better, and that makes it special to me.
4. thunder road--My post-canon fic that deals with a road trip, Dean and Cas, and Bruce Springsteen. Bruce is pretty near and dear to my heart (I can remember taking a roadtrip to Nashville, TN with my dad to see him that meant that we had to get up at 5am), and combining him with Destiel as well as some pretty fantastic places that I adore was exquisite.
5. protect and serve--My bodyguard fic! Combines grumpy Cas, sexual tension, action, and witty bantering, which are my favorite things. My first attempt at writing an action fic, and I’m pretty pleased with it.
6. what stays (and what fades away)--My first Pinefest fic, and my first attempt at trying to be mysterious. Writing dual timelines was hard, but I’m pleased with how it turned out. Also gets slightly Inception-esque towards the end, but you know, that’s what makes it special. Also includes AMAZING art by @skeletonsinzeeclost, who was a delight to work with.
7. the mafia!au fic--A one-shot that grew legs and then started to sprint away. One day I’ll work this into a real fic, I promise.
8. the librarian!cas/hunter!dean fic--Another tumblr drabble that has real possibility. I keep on meaning to write it and I keep on getting distracted. But one day. One day.

First Lines Meme (repost dont reblog)
List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favorite authors!
Tagged by @lokiitama I'm not going to tag anyone becausemy mental health just won't let me do that right now- but if you write and you want to do this, PLEASE do and please tag me so I can see. All the fics below can be found on my AO3 if you are interested in reading them. They range widely in ratings and warnings though, so mind the tags!!
1. Shore Leave, klance with an allurance detour, canonverse. In-progress. Written for ff.n and AO3
Lance's head appeared in the doorway, "hey Pidge- Hunk around?"
2. Single Dad Keith, klance, post-canon. In-progress. Written for AO3
When Keith had sent a message asking if it was ok if he brought a couple of guests with him the next time he was on Earth, Lance was intrigued, and maybe a little worried.
3. Sass, shklance (specifically v-poly with Lance as hinge, so shance and klance, with friends sheith) post-canon. Complete. Written for Seasons of Shklance zine, sequel to Champagne and Flapjacks.
The jacuzzi had been an excellent idea if Lance did say so himself. There was just something so decadently romantic about soaking in the bubbling water together, drinking champagne and feeding each other chocolate-covered strawberries for what felt like hours.
4. Champagne and Flapjacks, shklance (specifically v-poly with Lance as hinge, so shance and klance with friends sheith) post-canon. Complete. Written for Seasons of Shklance zine, prequel to Sass.
It wasn’t often that Shiro let loose enough to get tipsy.
5. Midsummer Moonlight, shance, fae au. Complete. Written for the Spooktacular Shance Minibang.
Growing up with a secret had made Lance exceedingly good at schooling his facial expressions and body language to appear unaffected and calm, even when he was anything but.
6. Heart's Match, klance, fae au. Complete. Written for Klance Secret Santa Exchange 2020
At first glance, the Galra seemed to be fairly uniform in appearance.
7. Pink Lights, lotura, modern au. Complete. Written for VLD Secret Santa Exchange 2020.
Money had been a little tight since she’d started that unpaid internship, and so she hadn’t been able to splurge on it, but still, the tree twinkled prettily, tucked away in the corner of the new apartment.
8. O'Lantern, klance, high school, urban legend, fae au. In-progress. Written for the Langstron Exchange.
To be honest, Lance much preferred trick-or-treating to the weird no man’s land that Halloween was in highschool.
9. Birthday Boy(s), klance, romellura, post-canon, 'Future Klance Family Fics'. Complete. Written for AO3
Sometimes, it was hard for Keith to recognize just how much he’d changed over the years.
10. Trust Me, shance, post-canon. Complete. Written for Shance Fall Exchange.
One more time.
11. Cha-Cha-Cha, klance, post-canon. Complete. Written for the 2020 Klance Pinefest.
“No, not like that,” Lance chuckled, the sound rolling down Keith’s body like an actual caress and making his brain short out.
12. Brownies, implied future kurance, canon-divergent. Complete. Written forthe Operation Kuron Zine Still reeling from the loss of the castle, Lance felt like he was teetering on the edge of a breakdown.
13. Pretty Perfect, klance, romellura, post-canon, canon-divergent. 'Future Klance Family Fics'. Complete. Written for AO3
No matter how thoroughly they’d discussed the details of starting their family, any reminder of Rachel's insistence that she help would never stop making Lance tear up.
14. My Am-Badass-Ador, shance, post-canon. Complete. Sequel to Am-Badass-Ador McClain. Written for Julance 2020.
It wasn’t until the door slid closed for the final time that evening and he engaged the locks that it really hit him.
15. Wheelhouse, klance, romellura mentioned, post-canon, canon-divergent. 'Future KlanceFamily Fics'. Complete. Written for AO3.
Laundry was, by far, Keith’s least favorite chore.
16. Am-Badass-Ador McClain, shance, post-canon. Complete. Prequel to My Am-Badass-Ador. Written for Shance Love Bang.
Docking on the Atlas felt strange- simultaneously familiar and brand new.
17. Annie & Pepper 3: Soon, shance, modern au. Complete. Annie & Pepper series. Written for Fall Into You The Unknown bonus for Fall Into You- Tales of Shance Anthology.
There were lots of things you could tell about a couple from how they interacted with each other when they were with trusted friends, Lance mused.
18. Annie & Pepper 2: Breakfast, shance, modern au. Complete. Annie & Pepper series. Written for Fall Into You The Unknown bonus for Fall Into You- Tales of Shance Anthology
The end of the semester was close enough that everyone was bemoaning their workload, but still far enough away that no one really felt like they didn’t have time to hang out and unwind.
19. Annie & Pepper, shance, modern au. Complete. Annie & Pepper Series. Written for Fall Into You- Tales of Shance Anthology.
The post-it  note was bright yellow, almost glowing in the dim light of the hallway.
20. Process of Elimination, klance, canon-divergent, hanahaki. Complete. Written for the Hanahaki Bang
When he arrived smack dab in the middle of the Castle’s sleep cycle, Coran met him in the hangar.
I think my favorite is "The post-it note was bright yellow, almost glowing in the dim light of the hallway." I don't really think of my writing as being particularly 'visual' or 'image-rich' but that image was so clear in my mind when I wrote it, and I think it sparks interest in the story as well as ties the idea of 'Lance' to the concept of being a bright spot in Shiro's life.
