i appreciate that we are creating a contradicktory penis with norrington’s name on the poll but do we actually think he is straight? homie chased a man across the 7 seas and into a hurricane like he may be repressed but that is a Gay Man to me.

completely missing the flint/stede poll war because I blocked the ofmd tag is both personally on point AND now providing me with endless entertainment as I try to find the original post and instead keep running into hysterical takes.

Ok that thing people do where they've clearly read discussion that was meant to be like intracommunity stuff but dont get that someone from out of those communities saying the same stuff might be Weird At Best like repeats it so then they go up to members of marginalized communities as someone who is not marginalized and say like "You need to accept whatever allyship you get because you cant afford to be picky!" like that doesnt make them sound like a absurdly evil anime villain

Madness is such a hard thing to define, which makes it such an easy label to affix to one's enemies. Once it had been applied to the flintsweep tags, once the fans had been... exposed, defiled, scandalized... everything ended.

Let me make sure I'm getting this right. So, based on the arguments I'm seeing, it's just fiction when people want to read or watch super-dark shit and it has no reflection on who they actually are (reminder, I agree with this statement). But, when people prefer lighthearted, silly, maybe even pollyanna-ish fiction, that means they're the type of people who are burying their heads in the sand and refusing to confront the fucked up reality of this world?
Here I am thinking the actual world is a literal hellscape and fascist governments are taking control in tons of places. Bodily autonomy is being taken away all over the US and they're literally legislating trans genocide here. So my silly little shows are giving my brain a much-needed shot of hope and positivity to help me continue to confront the hellscape that is the world and to do what I can to make it a little bit better in whatever way I am able.
On the plus side, I really do love adding people to my block list. And this bullshit has let me add so many people to it.

it's really ironic to see people say "fandom isn't activism and watching tv shows doesn't make you an ally" (which is true!) only to in the same breath act like someone watching a "problematic" show is doing immense harm to marginalised people. the point is that fandom discourse cannot and should not be a replacement for meaningful engagement in real-life politics/activism, not to endlessly debate whether or not consuming a particular piece of media makes you a good person

the ofmd v. black sails discourse is so funny but mainly because of the creator of the poll claiming not to really care about either show and then pissing and shitting and vomiting blood on the floor when people didn’t like their fav
and then equating the cancellation of a gay pirate show to the murder of gay people and rise of conservative fascism
and then telling black people that they need the allyship of racist white people and they should excitedly lap up every crumb of representation they can get because “ofmd is not the reason cops kill black people on sight”
and then getting mad at everyone else for taking the poll “too seriously” and declaring stede the winner of the gay pirate poll out of spite towards a problem of their own making

Hi! Sorry to bother you but is there some kind of origin post for the “stucky discourse” thing you could direct me to? I’ve only heard stuff about it secondhand and I’m really curious now
The origin post is the poll in which Gentlebeard won by the smallest possible margin. Nearly all of the discourse is just Stucky fans reblogging it back when it was open with tags either:
claiming that the poll is "supposed to be about voting for the ship with the most history" (it's not, the mods said specifically that it's not about anything except voting) and that therefore OFMD fans were doing it wrong by voting against Stucky
calling OFMD fans "babies" and a "new generation" because obviously if we'd been around we'd prefer Stucky because it's older, QED
making increasingly hostile "kill yourself", "wish you'd been aborted" etc. remarks, talking shit about The Kiss being awkward (like that wasn't the point?), and the like
getting really mad about the fact that we gamed the vote even though the rules explicitly say anything goes as long as you don't DDOS Tumblr
And then OFMD fans sharing their tags and laughing at them. (You can find some of this in my "pirate poll" tag.)
In conclusion, we are all Stede on this day, scraping out a win against the odds and making our opponents look ridiculous. Probably we will lose in a later round, but at least we will lose after having defeated Stucky.
