Just to explain my more unpopular opinions, Gen1 (specifically Yellow in 1999) was my first and I still love Gen1 for giving us Pokémon, it's just that if I'm playing a Kanto game, it's gonna be FRLG due to fixing most of Gen1's issues. It's the series' foundation, but it needed the other games to fill in the cracks and build on it.
XD is better than Colo. Better variety of Shadow Mons and Moves, more intense story despite Orre being cleaned up and using a child protagonist, Cipher comes off as much more vicious this time around (even implicitly causing the deaths of two people in the opening), and being able to save my game wherever adds points. It also has Shadow Lugia.
While ORAS doesn't have the longevity of Emerald and I'm still salty over the lack of Battle Frontier, its own additions are still pretty solid. (Building on the story and characters, especially the villain bosses, Soaring and Legendary hunting, etc.)
I prefer SM's story and how it handled Lillie/Lusamine's plot and the postgame of SM for expanding on Looker, Nanu, and Anabel's backstories, but prefer the gameplay of USUM. (RR, while there are moments I liked, just didn't live up to the potential since it was mainly just a boss rush.)
The DLC saved SwSh. The newly added Wild Areas were so much fun to explore, and Crown Tundra was fucking HUGE.
Legends is the most fun I've had since B2W2. I hope SV takes after it in how open it was. I spent a day or so fully exploring each new area.
BDSP is the only game that I actually disliked. Yea, the QoL updates are nice, what shoots it in the foot for me is the giant missed opportunity it was, especially for how much lore they could have added in with Legends. 💀

A couple of my favorite things from each Pokemon generation
I have a lot of negative things to say about recent Pokemon, but I kinda want to offset that with a list of some of my actual favorite things. There are a lot, so I'm going to try and list just one from each gen.
Gen 1
Probably the hardest to come up with, since later games mostly improved upon the formula. I could just say "it's the first Pokemon game" but that feels like a cop-out. So, instead, I'll say it's the sort of mystery it had. You'd find new things out from being told by friends. There were rumors about how to catch the mythical Mew. There was the superstition that holding down certain buttons would help catch Pokemon. It may have just been a thing of its time, given the state of the internet back then. But there's something about getting information from guides and friends instead of an ad-ridden barf of a website that made Pokemon feel really personal.
Actually, I just remembered one more positive in me. Gary being an absolute asshole. I love being able to take my rival down a notch. I don't want to feel bad I destroyed my rival because they're a great person. I want to rub it in Gary's dumb face.
Gen 2
The phone system. Being able to get calls from trainers, asking for a rematch was the coolest thing. It made the world feel so alive. Like there were things going on while you were training to become a champion.
Tumblr media
I'm surprised we don't have anything like this in modern Pokemon games. A fake social media network would be sooooo cool to see within Pokemon. Gen 7 kinda had this with the photos, but the responses weren't from NPCs you've met. It felt kind of flat to me. But if Youngster Joey followed me and commented on every picture of a Ratata I posted, I'd be stoked. If my rival sent pics of their travels while I did mine, it would make me want to go out and find those places and show them up. I think there is a lot of potential to make the Pokemon world feel more lived-in in the games.
Gen 3
So, Gen 3 is two things, but both because of the same reason: Puzzles and Exploration.
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald had a lot of depth to the maps. You could climb your bike up the side of a mountain and drive over a bridge from where you were just standing. The sense of exploration was strong too. You could dive underwater and see the depths. Too much water, my ass.
Tumblr media
Exploration felt worth it too. Especially the Regi trio. Three legendary Pokemon you get just by wandering around and hearing myths and solving puzzles. None of it is part of the main story. You feel rewarded for exploration. We got a whole open world in Gen 9, but none of the exploration really feels as worth it as it did in Gen 3.
Tumblr media
And the puzzles were really fun too. They had a slight challenge to them as a kid. In the newer games, the gym challenges feel a little more like filler than a challenge. The themed puzzles were almost a staple of Pokemon gameplay at this point, from spinning tiles, to cracking ice blocks to pushing boulders around. It was a part of Pokemon's DNA, and honestly, I miss it.
I put these in the same category because of the Regi trio. They are the result of exploration and puzzles, and I really feel like they highlight everything that was great about Gen 3 gameplay.
Gen 4
The best thing I remember about Gen 4 was the lore. And it had to be in Gen 4! This was the game where the creation trio was introduced. But seeing all this lore really helped to flesh out the world a lot. I really want to see more story outside of the main storyline and Pokedex entries. I want to know about the wars that happened long ago. I want to know the myths that the mythicals were involved in. I want to know more about this world that GameFreak has created. We do see a little bit of that in Legends: Arceus. And I love it for it.
Tumblr media
Gen 5
Sprites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I never had the opportunity to play the Gen 5 games until after I completed Gen 7. But I do remember that I was blown away by the personality that the sprites brought. Every single one was animated in such a way that really highlighted that Pokemon's personality. The idle animations in modern games can feel a little bland and stiff. But just look at this! Wings flapping, mouth chomping, this guy feels alive. This kind of personality really helped the Black and White games feel so organic.
Gen 6
Pokemon Amie.
Tumblr media
It's one thing to select an item, click use, and then just heal your Pokemon up. But, I'm playing Pokemon because I love my partners in crime. I want to give them the praise they deserve, not just run to a salon and select the option to groom them. And feed them. It was like a dumbed-down Nintendogs, and I would love for there to be more Pokemon games that expand on this idea. Or even just bring it back in full in a new game.
Honestly, the whole online capability of the game was great, that whole section on the lower part of the 3DS. It was really easy to find trades, battles, etc, something that I think the new games lack for some reason.
Oh, and Megas were also really cool. Probably the best "Gimmick".
Gen 7
Tumblr media
Gen 7 was in a kind of transition period, but honestly, it had one of my favorite stories. A lot was going on, and it was great. Runaway hooligans, interdimensional travel, mind control... this game had it all. The characters are fun, especially Guzma (what a name, by the way). And from what I remember, post game for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were really cool for having all of the big bosses from previous games show up and say what happened in the worlds in which they won.
Runner up is wild double-battles (SOS battles). I miss in-game double battles...
Gen 8
Tumblr media
This one is a tough one. Not that I particularly hated Gen 8, no. It's just that it was in a sort of experimental period that Gen 9 greatly improved upon. It was the first attempt at a semi-open world, and it was pretty cool, but underwhelming. But, it definitely opened up my mind to what Pokemon could be. They were finally trying new things that strayed from the original formula. Raid Dens were a neat concept, but just didn't feel like it had the epicness it was going for. The Wild Area was cool, but not as explorable as I hoped. But, at the very least, it let me know that Pokemon didn't have to be just the same linear path every generation. Maybe in the future we can finally get back to the exploration and collection that made Pokemon so enjoyable. Which led to...
Gen 9
Everything that Gen 8 was trying to do, Gen 9 improved. Not perfected. Far from it. But it started getting closer to what I imagine to be my perfect Pokemon game. I'm not going to explain my perfect Pokemon game here, but I will highlight a few things about Gen 9.
First, of course, is open-world exploration. I remember taking on the challenge of doing the gyms in reverse order. And while I would have loved some better scaling, it was just really cool to be able to do the gyms and story in my own way. I really hope they fix it up a bit and continue it.
Tumblr media
Then, there's the story itself. The game went real. A little darker than some of the previous games, but not edgy dark. No spoilers, of course, but it was good to see characters get plenty of character growth and screentime. It was cute. It was sad. It was fun.
Tumblr media
Raids were also improved. It still has its connection problems. But the biweekly 7-stars feel more of a challenge. I don't like that it's built around FOMO and I feel it should rotate. And when they drop support for the game, there will no longer be 7-stars. Maybe they'll patch something in, but I'm doubtful. Still. I do enjoy it better at least than previous raids.
Tumblr media
If I could, I would also add in some of the side games to this list as well, but this is already a long post, so maybe in another.
Anyways, I'd love to hear what all other people enjoyed about these games. I know there's a lot of hate for these games every gen, and I know I've rambled about things that I would have liked to see done better. But there's also plenty to love about this franchise.

I don't get how there are people who prefer Kirby Super Star to Kirby Super Star Ultra when the latter is just the same game but greatly expanded

28, 75, 76 :3
28. overall least favorite generation of pokemon
gen 2 really does nothing for me lol. i like a lot of the pokemon introduced but it's hard to really appreciate them when a huge chunk of them are only available in either the late game or the post game. locking evolution items for new pokemon behind the post game is dumb enough but when there are entire families of johto pokemon that are exclusive to kanto that's when shit just starts getting plain bad.
it's also impossible to balance these games apparently because i know the remakes are gen 4 technically but the fact that they did absolutely nothing to fix these glaring issues and just makes them even worse for me.
75 and 76 have already been answered!

Which Eeveelutions are most popular among NPCs?
On today's edition of Useless Pokémon Stats: I gathered data of the used Pokémon by all major NPCs (rivals, gym leaders, villains, and any other important story figures) and scanned them for Eeveelutions to see which mons are the most common.
Read on to find out which characters have Eevees!
The least-used Eeveelution is unsurprisingly the one who's the most newly added: Sylveon.
Shauna has a Sylveon on her team in XY.
It is also Gym Leader Valerie's signature Pokémon.
Bede adds Sylveon to his team once he switches to being a Fairy-type Trainer.
And of course, Penny has one. You're gonna get tired of seeing her on these lists, because she has every Eeveelution except for Espeon & Glaceon.
Next let's look at Vaporeon, who has six NPC trainers:
Misty has a Vaporeon on her team when rematched in Let's Go!
In Pokémon Yellow, Blue will evolve his Eevee into Vaporeon if the player loses both of the first two rival battles.
Calem or Serena (as the rival) will have a Vaporeon if the player chose Froakie as their starter.
Hau will have a Vaporeon if the player chose Litten.
Adaman has a Vaporeon in Legends: Arceus.
And Penny has one on her team as well.
Tied with six trainers is Umbreon.
Karen has an Umbreon on her Elite Four team.
Greta of the Hoenn Battle Frontier has an Umbreon in both Symbol challenges, so it's arguably her signature Pokémon.
Cheryl can use an Umbreon in the Battle Tower in all Gen IV games.
Buck has an Umbreon on his team at the Battleground.
Adaman has an Umbreon...
...and so does Penny.
And finally, also tied with the above is Leafeon.
Gardenia has a Leafeon in all of her B2W2 World Tournament teams.
Buck can have a Leafeon in the Battle Tower.
N has a Leafeon in B2W2 during the Summer battle at his castle.
Hau will have a Leafeon if the player chose Popplio.
And Adaman...
...and Penny too.
Interesting that Adaman has all of the less popular ones...
Anyway, moving up one NPC with Jolteon:
Lt. Surge uses a Jolteon in the B2W2 World Tournament, as well as during rematches in Let's Go!
Blue can have a Jolteon in Yellow if the player wins both early rival encounters.
Trace will always evolve his Eevee into Jolteon in Let's Go! Kinda wish they had kept the mechanic that Yellow used, but oh well.
Volkner has a Jolteon in Platinum, the game where his gym team actually makes some damn sense.
Marley can have a Jolteon in the Battle Tower in Platinum & HGSS.
Calem/Serena will have a Jolteon if the player chose Chespin.
And Penny! (the schuyyyler sisters)
Also in a tie is Glaceon:
Lucas will have a Glaceon in BDSP if the player chose Turtwig.
Candice has a Glaceon in her rematch battle in Platinum.
Cynthia has a Glaceon on her team in Black 2 & White 2.
Mira can use a Glaceon in the Battle Tower in all Gen IV games.
N uses a Glaceon in the Winter battle at his castle.
Sina has a Glaceon in Pokémon Moon & Ultra Moon, as well as in the Battle Tree in Sun & Ultra Sun.
And Irida has a Glaceon in Legends: Arceus.
And finally, we have two Pokémon in a tie for first, both with eight known trainers. The first is Flareon.
Blaine has a Flareon in the B2W2 World Tournament.
Blue will have a Flareon in Yellow if the player only wins one of the first two rival battles.
Lucas uses a Flareon if the player chose Chimchar.
Flint has a Flareon in Platinum, the game where he doesn't have a friggin lopunny for NO REASON
Calem/Serena uses a Flareon if the player chose Fennekin.
Hau uses Flareon if the player chose Rowlet.
And Irida...
...and Penny!
And tied with it is Espeon.
Red has an Espeon when challenged on Mt. Silver.
Sabrina uses an Espeon in for her gym battles in GSC.
Lucas will have an Espeon if the player chose Piplup.
Lucian has an Espeon on his team in Platinum.
Cheryl can use an Espeon in the Battle Tower.
And so can Mira.
Dexio has an Espeon in SM & USUM.
And Irida has an Espeon in LA.

Okay one thing I wanted to touch upon yesterday was how I'm noticing that a lot of pokemon villains do what they do out of love. And when I say love I mean love towards something. I dunno if that explains it well but here me out:
Volo is the most recent case, he loves Hisui and wants to end it's suffering, leading him to do what he did.
Rose loves Galar ( also it's clear that Oleana loves Rose. Romantically? Platonically? Who cares, she loves him)
Lusamine, at least in usum, cared for Alola to try and protect it
Guzma freaking loves his crew and will protect them.
Lysandre loved Kalos and the world and thus was disgusted when it became "filthy"
Maxie and Archie, despite their differences, loved Hoenn and wanted to see it grow into what they thought was fit ( Archie wanted pokemon of the sea to have a better place to live, and vice versa with Maxie and humans)
N clearly loves pokemon and everything he has done was for them.
Hell, the team rocket executives in hgss/gsc loved their boss so much to try and get him back.
The only villains that don't really share this love are Ghetsis , Giovanni and Colress imo. Okay. Well. I think Giovanni does care for his grunts, but it's not what's motivating him, I mean.
Edit: So I've been given some points about Colress and Giovanni! Colress loves his science, which drives him to do a lot of questionable things. The reason why I didn't include him at first was because unlike the others science is....science. I really don't know how to explain it, but the love I had in mind was more... personal? Emotional? Though, again, when you really think about it, science is what drives Colress, so I guess I'll give it to him here.
I will fully admit that I don't see Giovanni's love for anything that influences what he does, with the exception of money and power. That being said, Giovanni in the games has shown to care for Silver in his goodbye, promising to come back when he can revive the team rocket. That ...never happened, but the thought at the moment was clear. Again, I really don't think Giovanni's love for his son was what caused him to build a team rocket. He wants to show his son the fruits from his endeavors, sure, but Silver being the motivation seems far fetched in my opinion ( also this is referring to Giovanni). This applies to Mewtwo ( I've always seen the two having more of a mutual agreement than a powerful friendship, though a bond is a bond). What motivates Giovanni that isn't money or power? It's not Silver ( I think) , so is it his team? Maybe! I don't know much about Giovanni, so please know all of this is pretty biased.
Edit #2: IMPORTANT I FORGOT CYRUS. Cyrus is very complicated. Cause compared to Volo, who effectively tried to do the same thing, Cyrus seems more inherently selfish with a destain for humanity, while Volo's seems more just and out of love. In a very very simplified way of saying it, Cyrus is a man who wants to be alone. Him wanting to erase the world of emotion is very much for himself and no one else. However, there's that conversation in Platinum that begins to put a crack in this. Cynthia rightfully says that Cyrus could just fuck off to who knows where and be alone. Cyrus refutes this, saying he can't leave the world in such a state with spirit and emotion. Let's be real here. Cyrus could have very well just isolated himself. But he didn't! Why? Because of humanity. I think this is him showing that he cares, even if it's very twisted and comes from a place of supposed hatred( or Cyrus would just say he feels nothing. Boy, if you really felt nothing, why are you doing this? Dork)
I also didn't mention SM Lusamine! Mainly because I don't have the game anymore ( I lost my cartridge:( ), so I was only going off the memory of her just. Being an asshole to her kids and being obsessed with the UB. Which is still present in USUM, but I didn't consider why she was obsessed with the UB. Mohn. Lusamine loves Mohn so much that it drives her insane. She latched onto the Ultra Beasts, the thing that was last is connected to her husband. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this goal of finding her husband eventually got lost as she became more and more obsessed with the ultra beast. I could be wrong on that, but that's how I remember it. But I still think it counts because Lusamine's whole thing is "love" so to speak. A mother's love, love for your family, finding people that will "love" you, etc.
The only person who doesn't have any type of love is Ghetsis. He only cares about himself really, but that's not the theme I was going for here so. Yeah.

random infodump about the various pokemon related shit i do online and beyond (this is about fandom/community stuff and not my actual in-game accomplishments):
i'm a moderator for the ribbon master discord, which is a community dedicated to getting as many ribbons as possible on individual pokemon (i have many ribbon masters myself!) technically i'm also a mod on the community reddit but uh i just let the other mods handle the reddit lol. i've been in the rm community for 4 years now
not me specifically but ayano who i share a brain with runs the pokemon fansite blue moon falls which has a lot of comprehensive articles and custom coded tools pertaining to RBY/GSC and the rest of gens 1 and 2 (she's the reason that the internet has all those nice gifs of stadium 2's idle animations now btw)
in speaking of ayano, she's also a full odds shiny hunter and is a decently well known name in that community due to her resources and general friendliness lmao
i'm not as active /w it atm because my art focus has been more on human characters but for the majority of my life i was what people would call a "pokefurry" and i have a metric fuckton of pokemon artwork under my belt
on that note i've written pokemon fanfiction on occasion too though nothing major
i'm a casual VGC competitor - i ladder in-game relatively often, keep up to date with the meta, and i attended my first regionals this year and met up with a lot of pokemon folk in the process! i hope to attend more events in the future
i'm planning on getting involved with a local pokemon convention near me to distribute mystery gifts for old pokemon games the same way a toys r us would in the early-mid 2000s
i have been a part of and donated money to a few indie pokemon sites and projects, including pokemmo, gpx plus, and pokemon eclipse (previously known as pokemon the moon rpg when i was a kid and played it for the first time!). in speaking of eclipse even though i don't play it anymore i'm the reason that a 3d model for shadowobliveon exists lol
i know a tiny bit about romhacking and made a romhack of firered that lets me play the entire game as kafu once, with kaf as my rival. i also have a bunch of personal lost media of "story" videos i made as a young child by stitching together recordings of fake cutscenes i romhacked into pokemon ruby
i made all these really shitty pokemon fangames when i was around 10 years old and i'm kind of obsessed with them
apparently i'm a pokemon horizons fan now and people keep acting like im the second coming of christ in terms of likodot on twitter so maybe that means something (LIGHTHEARTED I AM JUST SHOCKED BY THE POSITIVE ATTENTION)
i own more pokemon plushies than what's healthy and i wish i could show them here but a lot of them are in a storage bag rn
my pokemon game collection is also fucking ridiculous but i'm too lazy to put all that together for a photo. for what it's worth i own at least one copy of every single mainline pokemon game before the 3ds era including all alternate versions (diamond pearl AND platinum instead of just one for example) and almost all spinoffs aside from like, 3 of them
i'm probably forgetting shit tbh the 2010s are like a blackout void to me sorry
i've been a pokemon fan since 2004 though when i was 4 years old i am in hell

What do you think about the mainline Pokemon games (RBY, GSC, etc.)?
LIKE...... IN GENERAL, OR..?????
ok well. let's see. there's ones I like and ones I don't, naturally. I said this in another ask but imo Pokemon design gets cooler and stronger with each passing generation, even if the games themselves weren't that good. LOVE Galar's designs for the most part, but good god Sword and Shield were not. good games. >__>
I'm eternally partial to RSE (Ruby was my first pkmn game, Hoenn's still one of my favorite regions, the Gen 3 era soundtrack is so nostalgic to me.) Gen 4 was a monumental generation for so many reasons, Platinum is a just a goddamn good game, and BDSP is a fucking embarassment lol. I love Gen 5's games, I've been wanting to replay Black sometime, I miss her. White 2 I think my be my favorite mainline Pokemon game of all time (though I have to be real, Violet is up there now too--warts (and bugs) and all, Scarvio was the most fun I've had in a mainline pokemon game in YEARS, and the story knocked my ass clean into the street. I just like it! I love Paldea!!)
I love Alola's Dex, I love so much of Sun and Moon's story and characters, and I fucking wish they were better games, I wish USUM wasn't a letdown (as much as Necrozma's everything makes me insane.) I didn't grow up with RBY or GSC so I don't really have any nostalgic attachment to them at all lol--in RBY's case I played the virtual console DS version and kind of. did not enjoy myself at all HHSGGDFG i would be perfectly content never going to Kanto in a pokemon game ever again.
Legends Arceus also kicked ass and I genuinely hope they do more games like that in the future. If they do Legends Unova I'll go absolutely ape, slash pos. (or whatever it is it seems like they're lurking towards with whatever the next 'big' game is, Unova wise--I genuinely dont think it's BW remakes (which also I don't think they should even make in the first place; the games look FINE, just PORT THEM FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.))
Scarlet and Violet's soundtrack goes so fucking hard.
And. um. X and Y's graphics aged like murky dogshit 🥴

and of course all my opinions r based on nostalgia. it's a game series marketed towards children the best pokemon game will always be the one you played as a kid which is why diamond is my favorite even though platinum is objectively a better game. but i'm endlessly interested by gsc
