Novel concept that I will never write:
MC is a bodyguard. His current protectee is a very rich kid, probably 14 or 15. The antagonists set up an ambush and kidnap both of them. Probably just a simple ransom thing.
Exchange is made, and the bodyguard is mildly surprised that he's set free along with the kid. It seems smarter to dispose of the adult witness who might have noticed more details about their captors.
The motive becomes clear when he's accused of being the "inside man" who enabled the kidnapping by leaking the where/when of the kid's travel schedule. Because yeah, it's unusual (and suspicious) that he made it out alive.
Of course, it's a setup. The antagonists have planted false clues that point to him. He has to find the real culprits to prove it wasn't him.
Rest of the story is danger and mystery and car chases and fights. I think the antagonist would turn out to be one of three people: the kid's dad (some kind of money laundering thing), another bodyguard at the firm (who seems like an ally at first), or the owner of that firm.

Spoil’s Moon:
A pumpkin headed child named Hallow lives in the heart of a cursed cornfield -which they seldom leave-. Their “family” are hollowed out jack o’ lanterns, and the overseer of their home -the Crowsmen- lies indefinitely dormant. They live peacefully, under the rule that if Hallow were to ever leave; they must return to the maze’s heart by sunrise, or lose their sentience forever. They follow this curfew with hours to spare each night, until their town hosts its yearly harvest festival, and Hallow decides to join in on the festivities. Midnight strikes, they must rush home, but little do they know their protector has come alive with the moon’s light. And it is prepared to rid the maze of anything out of place, including them.
Alternatively named Crow’s Moon. This was originally a horror game concept for a school project of mine, however I’ve settled these OCs down into a little slice of life setting for the time being, they won’t appear often, but they’re still important enough to me to mention.

Echo’s Sound Circus:
(FULL DESCRIPTION TBW) Ferris Holler is a film student in search of anything worthy of his camera’s attention. Because of his desperation, he ends up trespassing onto an abandoned fairground, its worn down circus attraction, and meeting its mascots! Who… aren’t what he expected. Which would be a lot more ominous of a statement had he not been expecting ghosts and demons.

Cabinder:
Violet has decided to move away from their home town in search of a new life with new opportunities and new friends to make. They find themselves in a rickety old town settled on Lavender Lake, cozying themself up in an aged cabin. Violet has made it her personal mission to find every kind of fish there is to see in the area, get to know all of its residents, and most of all make this house a home. Such tasks are aided by Jack, a carpenter ant who makes and sells furniture with the help of his family (are they his siblings, parents, or children? Nobody knows, he changes it every time), Woola the spider and Webster the sheep -a married tailor duo who sell all kinds of clothing, fabric, and sometimes even plush toys-, and of course Ollie the Olm, the town’s mute bait salesman, along with an assortment of other strange things. Of course there’s always more to come and there’s never a shortage of land to explore, but Violet’s prepared to take it at their own pace.

plot synopsis: trouble will find you
uni names subject to change on a whim these were just the first things I could come up with for them rip
When looking at colleges their senior year of high school, four childhood friends -- Lucia Gardner, Logan Andrews, and brothers Soren and Kellan Tyler -- face difficult choices of where to go to school... especially when Lucia receives a mysterious full-ride scholarship to the highly prestigious Rosemont University, paid for by an anonymous benefactor.
While Soren and Logan ultimately decide to attend school together, at the nearby Lightman College, Lucia can't pass up the opportunity to go to Rosemont with her scholarship, and Kellan leaves town and his friends to go to Redstone Heights college with his high school pen pal, Melanie Blake.
At Rosemont: Lucia meets Cameron Campbell, another student offered the same mysterious scholarship -- and Kellan's biological twin, from which he was separated nearly at birth. The two try to piece together the mystery of their anonymous benefactor and their reasons for offering the scholarship to what seems to be a strange and random selection of students.
At Lightman: Soren and Logan run into a grad student, Marian Masters, whose brother Aaron, by seeming coincidence, had mentored Logan when he was younger. But where is Aaron now? Marian doesn't know -- and is desperate to get back in touch with him.
At Redstone Heights, Kellan and Melanie make friends with a group of students who went to high school locally and show them around the town. They also befriend an upperclassman, Aiden, who is starting over at Redstone Heights after dropping out from nearby Blackwood University for unknown reasons...that might have something to do with his former best friend, Liam, and the shady student organization he's a part of.

Twin Threads is a 2021 crime thriller film written and directed by Shelley Parker-Chan. The film follows a group of young assassins, lead by Zhu Yuanzhang, sent to eliminate the heir to a rival criminal syndicate. Between them and their target stands Ouyang, a bodyguard with a mysterious past and conflicting loyalties.
From left to right: Ouyang & Zhu, Wang Baoxiang, Esen, Ma Xiuying, Xu Da and Chang Yuchun
I ended up leaning more into the noir poster aesthetic than I originally planned so I changed things around in regards to this AU. Noir isn't a particularly Chinese genre for historical reasons, but there are a few contemporary mainland Chinese neo noirs (I recommend Black Coal, Thin Ice). The contemporary western neo noir on the other hand is heavily inspired by Hong Kong action cinema, or East Asian action/crime cinema in general.
This AU turned into a love letter for Raymond Chandler (in spirit and fic writing that started this whole project), Hong Kong action thrillers, especially Johnnie To films but John Woo, Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam as well. Not a small part of this is also stolen from Wong Kar-wai, as well as the film Infernal Affairs.
The poster here owes more to classic noir posters as well as Takeshi Kitano's yakuza movies but also City on Fire (and Reservoir Dogs). But Johnnie To's The Mission, Election and Exiled have black and red color schemes as well.
Consider this a movie that probably wouldn't exist but is pulling from a pool influences between East & West and is just stuff i think is cool. Organized crime AU because it is a way to write a modern AU that keeps the brutality and violence of the original, as well as the pressure of hierarchy and tradition & games of thrones.

The thing about continuing a fic that has been on hiatus for way too long is that now you have to read through the whole thing yourself like what the fuck is going on

fans of morrowind and kill six billion demons would probably like jake wyatt's webcomic necropolis. last update was in 2020 but i think it's a shame to pass on a well-written and -illustrated story just because it isn't finished

You were right! It's Ichi Saki and Len. And it will be ichika's backstory and first miku contact
Shiho is the anniversary card then! Also I'm happy this event will expand on the Ichika iPad kid lore bc I personally find it really funny.

Heyy calico, I hope you don't mind the random ask. I'm pretty curious with how you figure out where you want your stories to go, if you're okay with sharing that of course. Sincerely, a struggling writer lol
I have three big things that help me direct a story (as well as help motivate me to finish stories!)
First---and the thing that helped me finish Never, Secrecy, and Sun and Glass---is knowing vaguely how I want the story to end. Sometimes the specifics change along the way, but having that target gives me something to work towards, and helps me pick a direction.
I've known how I want to end Riot Kings since around page 20, so a lot of story elements are building towards that ending and every major beat is contributing to its setup in some way.
Second, I try to work out themes early on. I am not very good at themes, but even just having a very general idea of what your story means to you can help hone your scenes and your plot direction.
Using Riot Kings as an example again, some of the themes I go back to are kindness having power over darkness/violence and realizing that your side isn't the uniquely "good side" and that you are not immune to committing atrocities. I could argue that kindness is actually the biggest plot driver, since Nabi's befriending of several people and pushing back against cruelty has led to a lot of new developments.
And finally, something that motivates me to carry on with a story is having a few twists and turns I'm excited to write and reveal. They don't have to be anything huge, just something that the characters aren't expecting and have to re-assess in order to get past this new challenge.
In Riot Kings, Wes getting captured by the Inferno wasn't exactly a plot twist, but it was something none of the characters expected and it opened up a lot of new conflict for everyone involved (which in turn gave me a LOT of new material to work with)
Since I figured out these points (through trial and error), I've tried to work them into new projects from the beginning, and it's helped me come up with a LOT of ideas for my wips
I hope this helps!!
