Spoilers for Ochkanatlan Quest!!

I haven't researched too deep into this topic, but I will go off of what was said to us directly in the Ochkanatlan World Quest.

So, the part about some humans evolving from dragons...

My focus is on Tighnari. His race to be more specific.

This is what the Tighnaris were originally supposed to be like. They were huge dessert dogs. Hermanubis was a Tighnari.

But after what happened happened, they moved to live in the forest. And centuries after, they slowly evolved to suit their new home.

So could it be possible that the Tighnaris were originally dragons? First they changed form to suit Deshret's civilization. As the age of humans came, they shifted form again to be human like.

Humans cannot evolve, only dragons can.

Arsenic and Adobo, Mia P. Manansala [started 05/18, finished 06/03] I didn’t dip my toes into the light murder mystery genre until now and to be honest, I’m not sure if it’s working for me. But I have seen recommendations floating around this series with filipino characters and wanted to check it out. The main character, Lila, is eerily specific to my personal experiences and upbringing, but the writing feels severely lacking because I’m actively looking for more character development and depth. My best friend clarified that this genre doesn’t really flesh out the characters in the way I want it to. In the end, it just fell flat for me. I gave it 3.5⭐️ on storygraph (which might be generous) — Crying in H-Mart, Michelle Zauner [started 05/09, finished 06/09] Have you even got a book that you know that you’ll love, so you just end up avoiding it at all costs? This is a memoir that I needed to read this slowly because it just felt incredibly special. And so painful. If you’re a first gen aapi with a difficult relationship with your mother, this is going to be a LOT for you. Sobbing, snotty, the whole works. Take long breaks in between reads if you need it. I luckily saved the heaviest part of the book for when I was taking an impromptu trip to the lake, surrounded by so much sun, mist, and life. The world was comforting me and wiping away my tears. 5.0⭐️ on storygraph!!

23.5 Degrees, GMMTV [started: 03/08, dnf] I only had time to catch episode 9 in May. I thought I would be able to complete the series this month, but alas it might be a DNF. Please tell me that the adorable teachers got together! — Doctor Who, Disney+ [started: 05/10, in prog] It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that DW is on here. I am a DW blog first, multifandom blog second. I’m loving the spin RTD is taking with the show for this run, having the genre touch on the supernatural/mythical/fantasy. It still has the same DNA but it’s so fresh. I only caught the first two eps on premiere week and haven’t had the time to keep up with the show weekly, but I am catching up soon. — Murderville, Netflix [started 02/10, finished: 05/23] I forgot to include this in my february wrap up, but I watched eps 1-4 back then and finally got around to seeing the last two eps this month. This show is such a delight! I love the unique twist on the concept of procedural improv, where the guest star actually have to solve the case at the end of the ep. They’re not there to just play off the other actors, they invite themselves to interact with the plot without taking it too seriously. If this sounds right up your alley to turn your brain down to like… 25%, please check this out. — Attack on Titan [started: 05/26, in prog] I have quite a journey ahead of me, but I’m happy to report that I LOVED the first ep. What a strong start to my anime era! This is gonna be my summer obsession, I can just feel it. By the time this posts, I will have seen eps two and maybe three(??). Gimme them right now, in an IV please. — Devil’s Plan, Netflix [started: 04/23, ALMOST complete] Bestie and I are OBSESSED with this competition series and we just learned there will be a s2, YAYY! This isn’t a show where you can turn your brain off. Now that I think about it, I don’t think there’s been a challenge I fully understood until ep 10, but man is it fun watching the contestants figure it out. They’re all SO intelligent and SOOO charming. And the games are so creative and elevated, it makes the stakes so charged! We are a few min into ep 11, out of 12, and we are planning to finish it this week. I don’t want this show to endddd!

Whew! I thought I didn’t watch much this month, but I covered a lot of ground on the TV front huh.

Pedro, Netflix [watched on 05/05] First off, you’ll be delighted to know that the artist and subject matter of the film, Pedro Friedeberg, has two cats named Wikipedia and Netflix. What I find so refreshing about this documentary in particular is Pedro, the unwilling participant during the process. The filmmaker, Liora Spilk Bialostozky, takes great care in sharing her insecurities about it. Liora is not shy about her adoration for her favorite artist and Pedro is very firm with his boundaries when pressed about his personal life. It makes for a very delightful, yet tense friendship between the two. — Polite Society [watched on 05/31] This is still fresh in my mind but what a spectacular film! LOVE how it puts the sister bond in the forefront of this classic action film, as well as all the female friendships. It makes the tonal shift flow seamlessly because the heart of the film beats strong. The best scene was the KHAN vs KHAN fight sequence, Ria vs Lena. The bashing, the biting, and the blood! The choice to make the final blow be self-inflicted, especially when it targets my personal experience, really took this film to new heights. I want to just ‘This movie has EVERYTHING’ meme the hell out of this. It has weird girls, judgmental aunties, college dropouts who have an estranged relationship with making art, torture scenes through the use of leg waxing, reproductive autonomy, FEMALE RAGE! It deserves to be up there when people think of 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless.

GÉNESIS, Peso Pluma [first time listening] Before Coachella, I knew very little about Peso Pluma but his live performance really shot him to the top of my list of artists to catch up on. When I was little, my dad always had corrido playing in his car radio and to this day, he still occasionally plays it in the garage. What I really admire about GÉNESIS is the modern twists the artist takes in the production and writing, perfectly paying homage to the traditional without it sounding dated. I think it’s largely due to his vocals. He doesn’t shy away from perfecting at the cost of being authentic and it shines in songs such as Rubicon and 77. The latter half of the album really packs a punch, it’s so hard to pick a favorite. Everything from Lady Gaga to the end is just banger after banger after banger. Having this album play in my car… I really do take after my father. — LAS LETRAS YA NO IMPORTAN, Residente [first time listening] I first heard of Residente from the song Immigrants (We Get the Job Done) from the Hamilton Mixtape. Even then, I made a mental note to get back to him, but lost track of time until I started listening to Peso Pluma. This compilation consists of 23 songs and it’s such a sublime experience from beginning to end! It’s cinematic, it’s heavy, it’s a party, AND it’s skipless. He has a level of talent that has me raging!!! HE’S SO GOOOOOOD TF?!?!? The first time I heard 313, I wrote a note on my phone with “hhhhhhhh???!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!how dare he” and I stand by that statement. It’s almost six minutes long and not one second was wasted. Where Peso Pluma brings the traditional corrido to the present, Residente brings rap/hip-hop into the future. Whenever I get a chance to jump back into the album in the car, the songs I tend to gravitate towards are Artificial Inteligente, Cerebro, Yo No Sé Pero Sé, Que Fluya, and Las Letras Ya No Importan. This guy doesn’t miss, I hate him (affectionate). — Everything I Know About Love, Laufey [first time listening] This album is magnificent, I am UNWELL. The way I feel about this album is the same way I felt about Five Seconds Flat last summer: a feeling so bone deep, my soul begs for release. Bewitched was such a strong outing for me, so hearing little echos of it in the album before made the listen experience all the more enchanting. I’m so in love with this album. I’m actually convinced that Above the Chinese Restaurant is the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. Ever. If I talk about this album more, it’s going to dig up so much of my deepest, darkest memories. I can’t… but also please talk to me about this album. — HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Billie Eilish [first time listening] On gawd, what a stellar month for music, I can’t believe it! What a KNOCKOUT!! Billie and Finneas, I feel, have finally come home. They finally own their craft, refined it, and carved it into this marble masterpiece. Billie is more daring with her vocal range and exploring new avenues in her execution. The entirety of L’amour De Ma Vie was just me going “ARE YOU KIDDING ME????” 30 times over in the car. No but for real, is she joking? This is so ungodly, what am I supposed to do with myself?? HELP???? It’s a no-skip album, there is no top 5, no favorites list. It just is and it’s unbelievable that I can’t experience it for the first time all over again.

hmmmm im ngl the trailer itself as a like prelude to what is coming in 5.0 intrigue and plot wise is like. compared to the region teasers that came before w lazzo and overture. its just. its kinda bad im sorry KWKJKWDJKWDJK like okay cool seeing the new cast and production value is high as always (+ music) but its such a middling teaser for the story itself?? it feels like a powerpoint presentation of the cast more than anything narratively coherent with an inherent draw and mystery

like theres mavuika speaking to the flame thingy (xbalanque that u? "one entombed in the primal fire" perhaps????) with some intrigue i suppose as well as her brief thing w capitano. ororon also appearing to be working together or aligned with capitano given theyre standing together there which could make for an interesting plot thread but beyond that its very.... eh. its not giving us a lot to grip onto ya know???? and thats rly a shame especially since i also felt that way abt the teaser in the 4.8 livestream. i wish we got more

and sure theres a tournament wahoo but like. its really Not helping to hype up that thing when half the introduced cast isnt being like "OMG the tournament!!!!1!1 this is HUGE!!!1" (or even. "oh no this is BAD!!!1" to set up basic conflict. like why would they dread it?) but instead just. "oh right... the tournament 🙄🙄" like who thought that was a good idea 😭😭 if the PEOPLE of natlan dgaf abt the big plot event happening then how am i as the viewer supposed to feel majorly invested in it . wow theyre tossing a ball around . wow nobody wants it guess ur tournament is having a bit of a PR issue in the making mavuika lmao

character design wise uhhhh. well theres the obvious huge fucking issue here and while id say that hoyo p much already showed their true colors on the matter with sumeru that doesnt rly. make it any less disappointing and egregious wrt all the cultures and peoples theyre So willing to gather inspiration from in all possible aspects Other than the diversity of the people themselves. like its just... bad and such a shame but also not very surprising unfortunately.

beyond that i kind of dont have anyone that super catches my eye rn??? mainly because . well leaks moment eek but its basically official info now so basically. xilonens existence as a geo and a 5* (which like . u dont need leaks to guess she will be im sorry jdwjdw) was leaked a bit ago as well as the patch she should appear meaning. im actually in chiori rerun savings mode since its very high chance that she will be back w xilonen if anyone. so thats my plan for now kjdwjkdwjkdwjk

in terms of the actual cast i do like kinich and ororons designs v much, the design motifs of the latter especially are interesting bc those eye-like patterns are almost giving quantum symbol (= black hole imagery) to me???? and thats V interesting especially if hes actually working w capitano and the fatui. now him being a cat boy or whatever animals ears those turn out to be isnt like sth thats huge for Me personally but i do think hes valid and also W for anyone whos into that, congrats guys im happy for u ! but like fr itd be such an insane twist if hoyos Finally introducing the void quantum abyss whatever element w him (and maybe cap too.) bc that symbol Rly is looking Curious. or then hes just electro lol. for kinich its like. yeah fair he might be xiao-tighnari-gaming from minecraft ill admit that but. i do like the color scheme and his outfit a lot JKWJKDJKDWJKD so like i forgive it

w the girlies i overall find them all like. quite nice but so far without any personality + lore known its hard to settle my complete thoughts on them just yet. tho citlali being pink is super refreshing for genshin since we do have a shocking absence of it so like shes definitely one im drawn to, chasca looks interesting and like she could play a bigger part plot wise (maybe?) so that might be neat. both her and citlali being cryo is kinda surprising?? but cool. maybe ill get to unbench my shenhe and play some cryo teams again lmao freeze has been dead in abyss for so long now....

xilonen again w the kemomimi isnt sth im particularly into or not into but she looks cool, depending on personality and how her kit synergies turn out (+ assuming the chiori rerun, the fate of those pulls too), i might try for her as well? theres an Energy to her i like it. if she has proper Attitude and flair thats gonna be a massive bonus for me

mualani i think is rather bland to me, sth about her outfit and design just doesnt click for me even if the shark thing from the teaser before is neat and everything. the chibis are never sth im actively drawn to but like both do look okay, im kinda hoping kachina could be a lynette moment for 5.x and end up a free 4* since her exploration roomba looks p fun

anyway then theres. mavuika and i. well at least the design wasnt. That concept art one (ThoseWhoKnow...) . so instant massive W improvement solely on that basis holy fucking shit but ehhhhh im sorry i still dont know how to feel abt the very modern like. biker bodysuit thingy. im not a huge fan of the bodysuit type designs anyway so its not that surprising but still. her eyes + hair is absolutely stunning tho like not a question at all.

tbh in a way i kinda feel like having too many Thoughts on her design is kinda just unnecessary bc like. shes the archon. of Course the kit is going to be insane so i will get her anyway (UNLESS a pyro onfielder JKWJKJKWJKWJKWFKJ like god please no). and in terms of like is her design and energy from what this vid is giving us good enough that i wont like. Actively resent having to get her for meta and strong teams??? Absolutely. so in that sense ig its all cool lmao

but yeah. idk i just think as a teaser for the upcoming story its rly a shame how weak this felt for me???? like sure overture ended up being a bit of a misleading teaser since it gave the impression of arle as this mastermind of the fontaine AQ which didnt rly happen but it still served as a source of hype and intrigue. and yes lazzo is sth that can Never rly be beat in terms of how out of nowhere it was and how fucking insane the whole harbinger reveal went (+ elogia cinerosa existing) for lore and long term hype but its just. unfortunately those 2 are the regional teasers this natlan one is supposedly meant to parallel and it just didnt deliver anything comparable to those for me

like still looking forward to natlan and seeing the rest of its cast (like im fairly convinced the flame thingy might be xbalanque and hes gonna be a big deal ultimately or sth) and where it goes and all its environments but this trailer didnt rly. grip me the way i wouldve expected it to. which is unfortunate kdjkdwjkwjkdwj but yea thats all

Thoughts about how Natlan could have improved a lot:

A potentially really good arc that Mualani could have had. After everything that happened with Kachina and the rite of resurrection failing. Maybe make the girl start doubting the authenticity of the prophecy. Or just having less faith in Natlan’s survival over all? Like start making her optimism be less optimism and more a facade to hide how she truly felt. Like it would have been really cool to see Kachina gain more confidence as Mualani lost it

I feel like Lumine should have taken more time considering the Captains point of view because honestly, I feel like Arle should have shifted Lumine’s pov of the harbingers even a little bit. 

Also like Mavuika is flawed but she could have more flaws, and she should be treated as a flawed person like the rest of the archons.

Speaking of those two. I feel like Lumine should have actually questioned both of their desires to sacrifice themselves. I just think Lumine dueling both the Pyro Archon and the 1st Fatui Harbinger could have been cool. Idk. I just feel like Lumine should have done more than just stand there. 

Idk if there is any saving Chasca. She’s a lost cause. She tried to be another Chloride and ended up being a “Oh my god I can’t believe my eyes” dude.

Xilonen I feel like was good especially with her story quest but just like with Mualani, once we were done with her introduction, she became a side character. She could have been more. She could have been the one to constantly challenge Mavuika in a way that shows both her and Mavuika's strengths and flaws.

I love Ororon and Citlali. Like they were great. They should have expanded on them. Hell, I think we should have met Ororon in the first act before we knew his involvement with the Captain and he could have told us about his granny. That way, him working w/ a harbinger could have been such a twist

How to fix Kanich. Give him a personality. Next.

Iansan should have been given more. She was the poster character of Natlan and we got nothing.

The heroes should have been utilized more. Like Idk. We spent most of the story trying to find all 6 heroes and have them help end the prophesied end of Natlan and in the end they just kinda ended up… not doing much.

Other characters we haven’t met yet (Like Ifa or Varena (whatever her name is)) should have been met in an event similar to the film festival. Because that event was such a good intro to Chiori.

Another thing is that characters shouldn’t lose their relatability to the plot after they are introduced. Mualani was great in the 5.0 update only to very quickly become a one dimensional side character. Like I would have loved to see all the characters still have significance by the end of act 5 very much like they did with Fontaine. 

Basically, I feel like Natlan had the potential to be so much more than it was.

I just finished Shadowbringers (5.0) and I have a lot of thoughts.

Spoiler warning!

I stepped into Final Fantasy 14 as someone who already knows the story, so much of my emotional response to the story has turned into an intellectual response.

What did X foreshadow?

How does X plot thread connect to Y plot thread?

Because I've consumed the story so many times via the playthroughs of others, much of my early playthrough especially was looking into details and extra dialog.

But even after probably the dozens and dozens of playthroughs I've seen, actually playing the game has still left me in awe.

And this is because of one simple and I think pretty obvious fact:

The spectacle has meaning.

There is substance and that substance is portrayed in really cool, meaningful ways within the gameplay experience.

To me one strong example is how the entirety of the final zone of Shadowbringers gives depth to Emet-Selch as a character just by existing.

It shows you his mindset and what he is fighting for just by characterizing the people he and the rest of the Convocation lead from his perspective.

It plays double duty, too because all of the Ascians we've met so far gain that little bit of context to their actions, as well.

It's that narrative theming that became so prominent with the Stormblood dungeons combined with a side cast of characters with much more diverse motivations.

I think the reason why Stormblood and ARR (especially their base stories) are considered such roadblocks by many isn't just the generic reason of slow story pacing many (including myself) bring up, but the very specific why of the pacing being frustrating: the base motivations of most of the factions, and thus side cast, in base Stormblood and ARR are pretty generic.

On top of that, in ARR specifically, not only are the motivations of most of the side characters you meet generic along with the dialog often being long-winded, but you also keep having to go all over the place, and never really stick around to just explore one place at a time to really remember any of them, even if they might have nuggets of interesting wold building to them.

Heavensward and Stormblood fixed how scattered ARR's story pacing was, but Stormblood especially still struggled with incorporating unique perspectives into the narrative.

Although there were differences in the rebellions and freedom fighters, along with the specific enemies of Doma and Ala Mhigo, the base motivation was the same for most of the factions you meet: they were too strongly defeated by the oppression to have the will to rise up again, so the heroes had to rekindle their will to fight.

I think the reason why the Azim Steppe has ended up being so beloved by many is because, among other things, it finally had some variance in terms of perspectives and recruiting a faction to your cause.

Sadu, Magni and Cirina and their factions are so memorable because they are so different from one another in terms of principles that drive them and their people.

And I think well-defined, specific perspectives are also the reason why many people love the patch content of Stormblood so much. Fordola, Yotsuyu and the crazy twists and turns of 4.4 and 4.5 just keep the story fresh.

And I think this is also why Heavensward doesn't get as bad of a reputation as Stormblood and ARR do in terms of pacing: the main players have strong perspectives.

I think this is even true for ARR's final stretch, Gaius and his group are a considerable step-up in comparison to any of the other antagonistic forces in the ARR base game in terms of depth.

Pretty much every single faction within Shadowbringers has distinct principles and these principles are all tied to the main characters of each of the area you visit.

So you have an anchor of familiarity and well-defined perspectives.

(Which Alphinaud and Tataru were in HW and Lyse, Yugiri and Gosetsu were in StB, Lyse especially suffered because she kept being put face to face with the same perspective over and over again, so Hien had to eventually happen to get her character truly moving.)

Add to all of that an incredibly even spread of information the story gives out: each area has really important story reveals and twists tied to them, which spreads out the substance in just the right way where just as the story starts to slow down, something happens to shake up the status quo.

There are slow points during Shadowbringers, but everything always leads to some sort of payoff by the end.

I think it's one of the best fantasy narratives I've ever encountered behind hundreds of hours of pretty imperfect fantasy writing.

And that's why FF14 is so hard to recommend. You can't just skip those hundreds of hours of imperfect fantasy writing because it builds the foundation that makes all of the cool stuff have true weight.

But it is pretty much perfect slow burn writing to me and I think anyone who can put up with it is rewarded handsomely.

To wrap around to the sense of awe I felt during these last few hours of the game, it was awe of the spectacle, awe of the meaning, but also awe at how it brings together everything that came before.

A culmination, but not yet an ending, and not even the actual ending of Shadowbringers at that.

This story is awesome. Go give it a try: Final Fantasy 14 has a free trial of up to level 70 content with no restrictions on playtime, so you'll have a while to decide how you gel with it.

[Book Review] Not Here To Stay 🕊

■ When I first bought the book, it was due to my attraction to its cover design and the synopsis. I was intrigued to find out how the author will play out or interweave the fantasy realms with our Malaysian culture and beliefs. And the deliverance is beyond my expectations. Honestly, I was looking forward to reading fantasy adventure and not melodrama. But, as I read on, I put myself in Amani’s shoes. It started to feel like I was underwater, everything was so dreamy, and Amani kept getting drawn into her thoughts and not fully engaging with reality. So, time, as in plots, almost standing still. I kept going in circles. I remember thinking, was the author purposely doing this to prolong the novel with unnecessary fillers?

Until something nudged her. Triggered her combative personality/attitude. That was when the adventure began. Her quest give me the vibes of “The Divergent Series” collided with “The 13 Charms Trilogy”.

■ The book is divided into three parts. A few pages into the reading, we can sense Amani's moody aura. Like someone who has been scarred and full of rage inside, yet, kept a poker face. Throughout Part One, you can feel the cloudiness and heaviness of her surroundings. And when she’s interacting with other characters or situations, the narration is dreamy. Slowly, although it was still hazy by the middle of part two, the heavy cloud has been lifted. Her mind’s getting sharper, and ultimately in Part 3, the air is clear, and we(Amani) can breathe easily again. It’s like we didn’t realise that we were wheezing this whole time, to stay alive. Moving forward, Amani acquired a freshened thought process with no blockages. I enjoy and appreciate these transitions.

There were too many realistic scenes, to be specific, the locations and the abuses. I thought to myself, this cannot be loosely based on real events, it must be a true story, altered with fantasy realms to make it fiction. To send the message out. And my doubts were answered in the Author’s note at the end of the main plot.

■ When it comes to the fantasy world and its descriptions, the narrative was not as eloquent as the emotions poured. I wasn’t properly immersed and teleported there. It keeps pulling me to bits of many books/films I have read and watched before. The Cloud’s Castle reminded me of bits of “Doraemon: The Kingdom of Clouds”, Kira and her child reminded me of the changeling folklore, the worldsmiths’s systems and bureaucracy reminded me to “Harry Potter” plus “Jumper”. Maybe, slightly, “I am Number 4”. It’s all over the place. But, overall, it worked.

The mystical elements are brilliant metaphors for our states of mind, how they are managed and how they affect our actions and reactions. It is true in most occasions, care alone is not enough. Reminders alone are not enough. It needs the right tools and methods to resolve the entanglements. To convey the validations or clarifications of things we subconsciously know and misunderstand. Bottled feelings are never a good thing. It is a ticking bomb. Its eruption is destructive. (SPOILER ALERT: in this book, the feelings were literally bottled! Haha, amazing!)

Amani’s conversations with Najmi, especially in Part Two, were really therapeutic. In Part Three, the plot twist was a surprise, a good one.

■ The book is written in time jumps. Back and forth is totally fine. I enjoyed it, as much as I enjoyed “The Witch of Portobello” by Paulo Coelho. However, I just don’t think the “plus-minus” of “day counts” at the beginning of every chapter was necessary. It distracted me and caused confusion. So after 10 chapters in, I stopped bothering with it. And start gauging the time period based on contexts. . ■ In gist, it is a journey to recovery and closure. It is melancholic with sparkles and deliciously filling quotes. The metaphors were blended seamlessly. I am 100% impressed. High applause for this book. If you want to see things from the lens of a depressed, grieved person, I recommend you to watch a Kdrama titled: Daily Dose of Sushines. If you want to be in their minds instead, you must read this book. Highly recommended!

The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard - Eddie Campbell & Dan Best [1.75 stars]

While I like seeing graphic novelists experiment with form, in this instance, it gave me a bit of a headache. But at the same time, it worked as it revolves around the son of a circus ringmaster who then takes his place after he dies. So it did aid in setting the absurdism of the setting, allowing it to be more character-driven. And it emphasized how unreliable a narrator Monsieur Leotard is.

I have spent eons in fandom spheres where 3rd person is preferred over 1st person when it comes to fanfiction and man, is it refreshing to see 1st person stuff again. Being in 1st person helped cement the living situation that Madeline goes through. Which has been kinda shot in the foot with the pandemic happening but there was no way Nicola Yoon could've predicted a global pandemic was going to happen 5 years after publishing. Then again, I still think the stir-crazy sensation felt during said time was exemplified through how Maddie navigates her emotions, even with the whole insta-love element. Along with the added visuals. 

The biggest nitpick I have is just who is paying off the credit card that Madeline uses? Not only that but the ending, after the plot twist felt extremely abrupt. That and I don't appreciate Carla trying to coax her into forgiving her mother. It's not necessarily out of character. Granted that was a bit open-ended with her (Maddie) saying that she didn't know the bubble she had grown up in was still home. Also her meeting up with Oliver in New York didn't feel solid enough. Also if he's not living at home, why is the ornery still up? But overall, I enjoyed reading it.

Favorite bit of the book was pg 196, where Madeline was internally describing her 1st time walking on the beach.

Last thing to note is that I had seen the movie when it was released in theaters so the twist with the mom was already spoiled. 

Killers of the Flower Moon - David Grann [5.0 stars]

I had seen the movie adaptation of this book that Martin Scorsese did when it had got put on streaming services and gotta say, the book is loads better. Like he cut out so, so much of the FBI investigation with Tom White and his makeshift crew which would've helped with the pacing issues. The book is divided into 3 sections. The first one going into the murders of Anna Brown, Charles Whitehorn, and George Bigheart, alongside the house explosion of Rita and Bill Smith, setting the scene. In this section, it also goes into depth about the Osage tribe's traditions and how they had been forced to assimilate due to their various everyday interactions with white people. Such as the Christian boarding school Mollie was sent to. Explaining the headright system and that a lot of them weren't able to have access to their own money as they weren't deemed mentally competent.

The second section details the FBI investigation and how it helped cement the FBI as a credible federal institution under Hoover. Emphasizing the corruption rife within the government during the 1920s with the Teapot Dome Controversy which was carried over by the gilded age. Many officials were bribed by rich oilmen. Which we seem to be paralleling with Trump and Musk (more people should've clocked him when he began using Reagan's tagline.) And how far William Hale's power stretched within the county. That he muddied the original investigation by creating false evidence to replace/misdirect from actual evidence. Even able to infiltrate the FBI's investigative crew with Kelsie Morrison and how it took multiple attempts to find an impartial jury to convict him.

The final section revolves around the relatives of those murdered. Interviewing them and what they know about the murders, how it has affected them and the surrounding community. What has become of the oil reserves and the headright system. Furthermore the author himself, reviews the investigation with material found at the National Archives. In attempts to find the missing link between some of the 25+ murders as not all of them tied back to Hale or Burkhart. Discovering that there was in fact a third central man; H.G Burt.
