curious - do you think rcg may have had any notion that they may seriously explore the possibility of mac being gay in s6 era? s5 functionally lays the majority of groundwork for the subtext that they evolved into canonical text and s6 opens with mac fights gay marriage and imo mac is pretty heavily gay coded throughout that season. however, s7 totally makes me believe they hadn’t really considered it, because mac’s gay subtext is almost completely nonexistent, bar the flashback from s6 in 7x10. he is overtly “straight” that season. clearly by s8 it’s fully canon and one of the most logical next steps they could’ve taken with his character in retrospect, but i have always wondered if many of the choices in s6 wrt mac’s sexuality becoming increasingly more ambiguous were deliberate and i’m curious about your perspective.

I do 100%! I've definitely spoken about this before... I'm not sure if it was here or a Discord or maybe even an in-person conversation, but I've always thought it was so insane how they tell you Mac and Dennis Break Up is romantic in some sense. They are realising that their codependency is more than some "bromance" and it spooks them (obviously, really more-so Dennis).

I think acknowledging it on TASP isn't a surprise, but the fact that it's stated in the DVD commentary, before they even filmed S6, makes it clear that this was intentional foundation they intended to work off of. When Dee shatters the glass closet by stating Dennis' codependency with Mac is viewed as an "old married couple" situation, it fucks Dennis up way more than Mac, because Mac is unable to recognise the queerness of their relationship while Dennis can.

Once they make up, they've established something in the writers room going forward for Mac & Dennis that they clearly want to keep a part of their dynamic (again, as reaffirmed on the MADBU TASP episode): they are gay for each other. But they're not going to (mutually) recognise or accept it, because that ruins the joke.

So, in my opinion, they go into Season 6 really digging into that dynamic and playing on the joke by pushing against it: Dennis recognises the issue of being into Mac internally so he needs a wife; Mac recognises the issue of being gay externally so he needs to fight the gays. No doubt in my mind that throughout S6 they were writing and acting with this idea - though probably with no firm idea of where they wanted it to end up.

So we get to Season 7, and your point is the reason why Season 7 is one of my least favourite Seasons as a coherent part of Sunny (keeping in mind the flashbacks in How Mac Got Fat are just a scrapped S6 episode, reworked) - it seems to ignore a lot of the build up in order to make funny stand-alone episodes of the show. Was it because of Fat Mac? (Only one identity at a time for Mac, pls!) Is it because they had a chunk of guest writers? Is it because they thought there was a large chance it was the final season of the show? (They've talked about how when they shot the final scene for S7 (HS Reunion) it was under the idea that they might not get renewed)

Probably only RCG truly know (and maybe they don't even remember). As for me, while I don't think it was necessarily deliberate, like they sat down and said "actually lets roll back the gay [Mac] stuff here..." my idea is that going into S7 they hadn't yet figured out (or couldn't agree) if/how they wanted to make Mac's homosexuality crystal clear.

Maybe they dropped it for a season before deciding... or maybe this downtime served a purpose, because the reveals on Sunny serve one main goal: Subvert expectations.

Going from S5/6 to 8 is very obvious. That is a closeted gay guy. BUT when you have S7 cut in there in the middle, this working-season where they kind of play hard into Mac's aggressive temper and his stupidity and the fact that he's a voyeur, it's a little less-so. You're hit with Season 8 and that attempted kiss kind of comes out of nowhere and then every episode following has some kind of Mac is GAY moment and it's just extremely funny... Like, oh holy shit he's gay and he can't even recognise it.

But that gap does kinda throw you off like, was this a decision once they got renewed going forward that they needed one of them to be obviously gay based on their history? I really don’t think so, the foundation seems too intentional and the evidence we have that RCG acknowledged the character’s queerness (of all them) back then is enough to have me firmly believe the S6 stuff was just further groundwork for Mac’s character and his and Dennis’ opposing relationship

Do you think the series will really have 8 seasons? I heard some horrible stories about TVC' latter books and I'm just wondering how long they can go before going too far,you know like ''they should had stopped earlier ''.

I think they should focus on more episodes by season than too many seasons.

And I don't really want to wait 5-6 more seasons before Louis and Lestat get back together.

I think 7/8 seasons it probable for this series, and it does seem daunting but I think there's enough good in the books + there's what is original for the show itself so I think that will get them far. clarifying that I don't actually know anything and am merely guessing, but:

S1 - IwtV

S2 - IwtV

S3 - TVL

S4 - QotD

S5 - Some mix of TotBT/Memnoch/an array of things that show unrest in the vampire world

S6 - PL

S7/S8 - PL/PLatRoA/BC

this is a simplification of it because, obviously, the show is much more of an ensemble cast than the books and so we're going to be exploring Daniel, Armand, Louis, perhaps Gabrielle depending on how much they want to include her, etc. and this isn't me getting into vague 'what I think those seasons might look like' but these are the books/broadest storylines I think they might explore.

IwtV had to be two season for a lot of reasons: 1) 7 episodes for the one book would have been a travesty 2) fleshing out of Louis as a character to include him more 3) the establishment of the Family (Lestat, Louis, Claudia) and how that is the driving force of the entire series/the reconciliation of Loustat, etc. 4) the 2022 Dubai storyline being entirely uncharted territory/establishing Daniel as a prominent character 5) the way other characters get a lot more exploration than they do in the books (Armand, Daniel, Madeleine, Claudia even, Lestat, Louis, etc.) because that is how you get people invested. and probably more things, but these are the important ones.

I have no proof, I'm just guessing, but I think we may start getting 10 episodes a season (I think this because of ratings and because of the fanbase, again, no proof of this, I'm throwing out gut feelings here)

the later books definitely are a mess (so are the earlier ones in a lot of ways, there's good but just! a lot), in a lot of ways, but there are some good things and there's a really great writing team that can take it and make it amazing, I think. and, again, there's going to be originality taking place because Louis and Daniel and even Armand are fairly absent in a lot of the books as it becomes the Lestat-story.

so I do have faith that 7/8 seasons will be just fine for this show, but I would start to get nervous if it went beyond that (and, again, it could be totally fine, but I also think they're focused on quality and would stop when they have told their story as they wanted to - and because, I think, they have a lot more they could do with the vampires in the new talamasca series or even in other spinoffs (night island, my beloved, etc.).

AS FOR LOUSTAT, listen. it's not going to take 8 seasons for them to get back together. I know Rolin joked about it but that man is sarcastic as hell and jokes a lot, I wish it would have been a video interview so we could have heard it.

my genuine Loustat theory - from the bottom of my heart I feel this - is that we will see them get back together in s3. I think it will be in the last 2/3 episodes of the season, and their feelings that have been brewing and spilling over all season will come to a head and they'll get back together and we'll get 2/3 episodes of happiness, where it's like 'wow, this is what they needed, this is what it was always supposed to be' only for Akasha to snatch Lestat from Louis at as the final scene of s3. and they'll be apart for most of s4 as the vampires band together to stop Akasha and get Lestat back.

then, by s5, they'll be together fully and we'll be able to explore a lot of other things while still seeing Loustat be a couple that has things to work on without their issues being the only major conflict as that would get boring given that their issues are driving factors of the conflict in s1-s2, and, no doubt, s3.

anyway, idk if this makes sense, and - once again - I am just putting thoughts out there.

Watching Druck S8 feels like a toxic relationship you cannot get out of, because you remember all the wonderful moments and happiness you experienced in the beginning... and now you're clinging onto that, hoping that it will get better soon, that something will change (POV's!! lol), but you're just disappointed as it gradually gets worse and worse and worse...

A question. I have wanted to get into Hermitcraft for a bit because I've heard nothing but good things. Do you need to watch everything from S1-7 to get S8 when it starts?

Absolutely Not!! each new season is a standalone series, as they all start together at spawn in a new world in episode 1. of course there may be some inside jokes or small lore bits that are carried from previous seasons, but season 8 for the most part will be a Reset.

so it is the perfect time to start watching!! rest assured, i will have hermitcraft propaganda posted tomorrow when the hermits begin uploading their first episodes if you’re not sure where to find the content.

reading Dr Charne-Sayre's book in prison: I love the idea of Scully pursuing virology after s8 rather than what she ends up doing in IWTB. Seems like something more fitting if she believes that there's some sort of viral apocalypse coming. Yes I said s8.

There was a buzzing sound in her ears, and Jon Snow was looking at her with powerful disdain. What was his problem? He was looking at her like she'd said something rude—through the haze of alcohol, she realized what she had said.

Or, Sansa has just started at Wall Consulting, and is determined to make a good impression on the frosty, successful Jon Snow.

Things don't go quite according to plan.

after being fired from her previous job, sansa gets a new consulting position, at a company where jon is a senior consultant. sansa is determined to get back on track with her career plan, but makes a series of mistakes that aren’t conducive to that . . . and then manages to get herself a bit entangled with jon. i would vaguely classify this fic as an enemies-friends-lovers. i say vaguely bc it isn’t EXACTLY, but there’s certainly animosity between them at first that shifts.

i read this last sunday, and i have literally reread it already. i genuinely dont remember the last time i was so hooked on something. i was so excited that i was skipping over words and paragraphs in my haste to find out what happened next, which is why i chose it as my rec. 

the characters are so complex, and i fucking love this sansa and i would die for her. jon is an enigma at this point, we’ve only had one insight into his mind and it wasn’t super long, but honestly it was glorious bc up until then he’s been rather hard and unrelenting and the little tidbit we’ve just got has softened him. all of that is a longwinded way of saying that the characters are very believable and well-rounded, but not the typical characterisation that we see of jon and sansa. they’re hard and burdened, but they’re magnificent. 

uchiha_s has a variety of really fantastic fic, with fantastic and kinda of dark characterisation. i also particularly enjoyed Kiss With a Fist, and Tree of Hearts.

post s8, mostly canon compliant (barring pol!jon being true). follows jon north of the wall as he struggles with what happened.

now this turned into a mini essay, so bear with me pls haha

this fic is . . . ok. so. it isn’t lighthearted. it isn’t ~nice~ (though it does have a happy ending - or as happy as one can expect. bittersweet is probably more like it, but it certainly isn’t sad, or a bad ending). but, honestly, it was a type of cathartic that i didn’t know i needed. i have let go of a lot of s8, bc frankly i find it so laughable that i can’t even consider it the true ending, esp after i’ve read so much fic that did it so much better. so considering that i’d parted ways with s8, i was surprised to find that this fic offered something in terms of my dealing with jon’s ending. it parsed through both jon’s ending, as well as his general story arc over the seasons, and provided something that felt both well earned as well as realistic. 

ths fic is first and foremost about jon, and jons feelings. sansa is still treated to thorough characterisation, and in my opinion still a rather decent arc that doesn’t ignore what she went through. post s8, there’s certainly a difficulty in coalescing jon and sansa, due to the shitty things jon did, but in my opinion the fic handles them both well. an important caveat to that is that this is just my opinion: there were a lot of people in the comments who spoke about how they needed more resolution on sansa’s end, which is certainly fair (esp for people who are sansa fans first) but what i have to say to that is, quite simply, that’s not what this fic is about. 

it’s an ode to the jon snow we all loved and who was ruined by mischaracterisation, and its an attempt to reconcile what we saw with what we know: that jon is a hero, who will be burdened forevermore because of who he is and what he did and the role he played in what happened. the fic is messy and dark, but it’s natural and organic too, and is a true representation of the guilt that comes with necessity. or, rather, the guilt of deciding that your needs are greater than others’. that you placed more value on some lives over others’. 

all of that is a long winded way of saying that i apparently had unresolved feelings about s8, and this fic helped. okay essay complete haha.

i didn’t expect to have so many things to say about Empedocles but with all the adorable msr content... apparently i do

now THIS is the mulder i wanna see. joking around with her, bringing her a gift, checking in on her to see if she’s doing okay. why couldn’t we have this in Three Words?? this show keeps switching between asshole mulder and attentive mulder every episode or so, it’s confusing. i never know which one i’m gonna get. this one, Carter! give me this one!

the ease with which they tease each other and the fact that mulder is joking about the baby’s paternity makes me think that they finally had The Talk in between Three Words and this episode which is... disappointing, as i would have liked to see the scene, but i’m guessing Carter still going with “aha we never confirmed the baby’s father, gotta keep you on your toes!” bs. to me scully’s face in the second cap says it all. “mulder, you know very well who fathered this baby, you were there”

no matter how many times you have them say that it still doesn’t make it true, you idiotic white haired-devil. “we just work together” uh sure, and that’s not his child she’s carrying. workplace proximity associates, got it. 

scully waddling omg. better yet: scully waddling in this outfit. so comfy. so cute. the cutest. 

why is one pizza almost $30 America are you okay

listen, with the amount of times these guys end up in the hospital, they really should think about marriage, if only to spare the hospital staff the awkward 5 minutes explanation about what they really are to each other. 

i’m sorry but this is definitely the proud and slightly awed look of any man who is about to soon become a father. you don’t!! touch your workplace proximity associates!! that way!! 

and they FINALLY have mulder acknowledge the baby with something other than jokes and oblique references to scully’s pregnancy. and it doesn’t get more intimate than a hand on her belly. that’s his child right there. that’s the love of his life carrying this little miracle she wished for so fervently. love scully’s answering smile. this is the first time we’ve seen him touch her belly and she doesn’t even bat an eye. he belongs here. he’s right where she wants him to be. 

ugh i love them. scully is so cute when she’s sassing mulder back. more pls

what a beautiful, beautiful character development. From her “I’m afraid to believe” in 1x12 to this. we’ve seen the evidence of that change in her all throughout s8, especially when mulder was missing and she had to remain open to extreme possibilities without him nudging her in that direction, but having her say this, and saying it to him... 

isn’t this why she was drawn to him from the start? while everyone else saw him as spooky, bizarre or ridiculous, she saw him as brave. for having the courage to believe in impossible things. for persevering against a world that kept putting him down. 

scully, you won’t have to do it alone. you can pass it on together.
