Great Backyard Bird Off - Cosmopolitan Birds (poll 14)

Bird Info & Submission Reasons

Black Kite (Milvus migrans)

Continents: Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa

submitted for the Asian continent, but this bird is found all over the Eastern Hemisphere

Medium-sized, rather nondescript raptor with overall dark plumage. Varies considerably across range, but always note tail fork (can disappear when tail is fully open), and short head and neck. Juvenile averages paler and more contrastingly-marked. Flight style buoyant, gliding and changing direction with ease. Frequently forages in urban areas, rubbish dumps, aquatic habitats, and grassland, but usually avoids heavily forested areas. Sometimes solitary, but also gathers in large flocks on migration and at good feeding areas. (eBird)

Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita)

"They go chiff-chaffchaff or perhaps chaff-chiff-chaff-chiff-chaff, which i think is brilliant. They're tiny flitty birds, very busy (i think the Latin name is something like leaf-inspector) and have bigger things to care about than humans. Books describe them as "drab" but they dress in soft smart browns with dark stockings and dashing yellow eyeliner. I love hearing their peeps from the hedges. I love them, have i made that clear your Honour? Anyway, my locals are off migrating and i miss them."

A very plain leaf warbler found in a variety of wooded and scrubby habitats, often near water. Best identified by voice: song is a slightly jerky double-noted chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff… (eBird)

Nobody requested this, but I'm going to post it anyway... so you all might remember(or not) how when I posted my pictures of Gen 1 iterators, alongside Moon's ref she had a... unique end of lineup design. Well here's a little bit of explanation for that. Yes this is an AU...

And yes... it's a crossover. Look, I have a personal bit of fun, this is hardly the first time PMDE has collided with a random fandom and it will not be the last. This kind of crossover has gone all the way back to my Sonic fandom days. Not in this style specifically but yeah.

At least this time I can do art for it!

I call these sheets the "Live Iterators React" and then immediate aftermath to things. Which yes. Just yes!

Also this was set post-Moon's collapse, not sure if Artificer is or isn't around for this, in anycase, the reactions are most shock/confusion/surprise... aside Suns who is experiencing what I call the "ADHD relief that something no longer requires you to damage control" reaction... that won't last.

Anycase feel free to ask me about this AU or don't... I'll share more doodles eventually later since this isn't even half of the things I have thought about.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Extended Character Sheet (Gen 9)

Pokémon Fans of Tumblr: After a joke gone awry I have spent more than five hours working on extending the PMD roster to be up to current date with Pokémon (gen 9). And to not feel like my time has totally been wasted on a nerdy thing, I present to you my results.

(Keep in mind this is not official at all and just my personal pickings.)

I will put thoughts and other boring stuff under the cut, should you be interested to read about all the thoughts and decisions I made.

We good? Okay, you asked for it! So;

As mentioned before this all started with a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon joke with pointing out a few innocent behaviors and going: "You seem to be the-"

And then it hit me- The nature-to-pokemon roster of PMD hasn't really been updated since Explorers of Sky, which only went up to generation four.

And from there it went down hill:

"Wait! The list doesn't even include all available natures!"

"Okay, so there are 25 natures in all, but the number of starter pokemon alone are 29 so... I guess I'll make up some natures?"

"I need enough natures to also include some classic Pokémon protagonist options such as Pikachu... And oh no, just HOW many options were there from Gen 1?"

"-And there are barely any extra options from the other generations?"

"WHAT THE [Redacted] HAPPENED TO THE ROSTER IN GATES OF INFINITY?!"

For this project I had to lay down a few rules:

The list had to include all starter Pokémon.

Include at least two additional Pokémon from each generation.

Try to balance out Pokemon Types as much as possible, as well as making them decent starter pokemon.

No gender exclusive Pokémon.

Trans males are male and trans females are female.

Added Non-binary option for the quiz.

Extra added things to note:

The list is mostly based off the one from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky.

Missing Natures from the original list are grayed out for convenience.

New natures, added out of necessity, has its own list.

I also have a list of honorable mentions and cut Pokémon.

Note: Pokemon greyed out on the list above is to indicate generation changes.

My thoughts on the cut pokemon:

Obviously there are way too many Pokémon from gen 1 for them all to make it to the list. Pokémon such as Cubone and Phanpy could have made the list more diverse, adding the ground type to the options. Togepi and Sneasel were chosen over Phanpy for their less common Typings. However after cutting Cubone and adding Ralts to the roster it could be argued Phanpy should have been added back instead of Togepi.

What am I? The Officer Jenny? If you feel Phanpy or, hack, any other pokemon fit the roster more than my pickings, feel free to edit or make your own roster! :) /Genuine /Positive

I really like Vulpix, however there were already a lot of fire types. The reason why Charcadet is on the list is because I felt like I didn't have enough options from Gen 9 that I felt would fit as a main character, be strong enough or not too strong for the theorized adventure.

Most Nominee were chosen for being decent base form Pokémon and being dexterous enough for a human turned Pokémon to not feel completely claustrophobic in their body: I figured a bipedal or quadrupedal Pokémon would feel more natural than pokemon like Bronzor or Ekans.

(Looks at Snom) I said most nominees. Snom was chosen for their special typing and cute appearance. However stats and weakness wise I found it hard to defend it.

For my final thoughts on this list:

I doubt by far I'm the first to make an extended list for the PMD franchise, but I haven't seen many lists on this website and I did the work anyway, so why not post it?

You are more than welcome to comment on it or make your own! ^^ I welcome creativity and I would be more than excited to see the thoughts other people would put into a list like this!

A lot of thought has been put into the list, especially nature to Pokémon wise. If it wasn't on the official PMDE list, the Pokémon placements have a 80% chance to have a sort of reference from the anime or in game ability, or just how I could see them. (As well as other obscure trivia. Like how Chikorita is on the Lonely category for being perhaps the least picked starter Pokémon.)

And hey- If you feel like your Pokémon self isn't on the list, then that's completely fine! ^^ The list is more of a guideline than actual rules- Hack it's meant only for fun! And I'm glad you know what Pokémon you'd be!

I didn't include Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, Let's Go! Stormy Adventure Squad and Go For It! Light Adventure Squad in my research because it wasn't released outside of Japan (To my knowledge.) It also featured a very specific art style, so I considered them kind of their own spinoff franchise at that point.

No, I'm not going to make a quiz to fit the extended list. c': Anyone wanting to make a quiz based off this list is more than welcome though!

I am currently making lists for specific pronouns such as Necrom (With Ghost/Dark/Poison type or death themed Pokémon) and Fae (Fairy/Normal/Psychic type or fairy themed Pokémon). Unlike the Gender themes these will contain pokémon outside of the normal roster. So in a way I kind of walked back on the "no gender exclusive" rule, but hey it's all in good fun!

I'd love it if you guys have any other pronouns you'd like me to work on! ^^

I also worked on an "it" pronoun with genderless Pokémon, however even when the list included Steel/Rock/Ground types and object Pokémon I had a hard time making it work. I'm open to any suggestions on how to expand the list and still keep it in theme. c':

Don't get me wrong, for a tiny little foxy jumping over a massive cassum leading straight down to the searing hot, burning depths of hell and having a much less than 10/10 landing on the other side knowing full well that one micro fuck up was it took for you to plumbed down and say high to all the demons and damned souls below, you look great! :D

Nah it wasn't w0z, w0z was the groomer Glip was trying to defend by pointing fingers at the OTHER pedozoo they had in the server. There are so many creepers in the discords for some reason!! With Glip they could have kicked Final for being annoying or just kicked them due to some random tantrum about something off they said, who can say? Either is likely.

5 years ago would be right around the MS Paint era, there were so many stupid one-shot angels and incoherent rambling back then that it'd be hard to pick them out, if Glip even knew they were being creeps at that time. It's possible they kept it under wraps back then, or that Glip knew and just didn't care, both are pretty plausible. No idea where Kero is nowadays. They could still be in the server for all I know.

I decided to look back on PMDE and some of the groups that attempted to fill the void when that ended.

There wasn't much left to find since many of the groups I remember popping up have long since been deleted. The only really prominent one left ceased real updates a VERY long time ago.

To be honest though, now that I can look back on everything with hindsight, I think it was for the best that everything fell apart. That's due in no small part to glip and co's predation, and the way it influenced all of the other groups.

One common thread I heard about back then was that there was a lot of infighting due to people "not being able to keep it in their pants." Not that I have any right to judge. I was just as caught up in it even if I only really lurked.

I've let go of it.

Will there be actual persona in the PMD? Will this weird Luxio who is standing on two feet just whip out a demon from hell? Its just very funny to me, but I am not two sure how closely these worlds will collide.

Who are your favorites of the side characters in pmde (however you take that to mean)

Ooh, so many great side characters :3 I’m gonna consider the future trio as main characters and give someone else the spotlight for once (Celebi will always be a main character in my heart. Who cares about screen time). Now on to the rambling >:3

Guildmaster Wigglytuff is a given; his unsettling demeanor and odd charm have me enthralled. Every playthrough he gets the most genuine laughs out of me, he’s just such a funny little guy! That being said, I also love how complex and capable he is—the way he’s always looking out for the guild members, how he’s always suspiciously there just when you need him, how he can beat his opponents to a pulp without even getting a scratch. He’s just got that perfect combination of “weird man child” and “highly respected explorer” that makes him a really intriguing character. Also he can explode things with his mind, which is neither relevant to the plot nor discussed at length. 10/10

My other favorite side character is probably Dialga, who, despite being integral to the plot, shows up for way less time than I initially recalled. It’s not so much him as a character as much as his bizarre situation that gets me. The way his health/sanity are tied to time itself, and thus indirectly to Temporal Tower, creates a unique predicament; to have command of something as integral to existence as time, yet to also be at the mercy of a physical tower (no matter how well-hidden) is frankly quite frightening. It’s also interesting that Palkia and Giratina aren’t in a similar situation, which begs the question—why did time have a physical manifestation in the tower? Was that something Dialga did, or just…how it works? Also the way that after the tower gets damaged, he enters this “not quite dead but not quite alive” state is just a touch horrific. You could especially feel his desperation in SE5 when time started to resume—he must know better than anyone that a world where time has stopped isn’t healthy or livable in, yet he’s not coherent enough to actually DO anything about it, other than protect what little there is left. You can really tell where Dusknoir got his sense of self preservation from. Anyway I just always thought he was an interesting character. Plus you can tell he’s a little extra—sending a piece of the Rainbow Stoneship out into the world to find the “chosen one” who gets to randomly access Temporal Tower is some kind of Willy Wonka behavior.
