Fall Into Me 9
Find the series masterlist
Rose deals with the fallout of the graffiti, and discovers she has more help than she could have guessed.
Warnings: Swearing, Feels, these men are on a mission now, teasing.
Word count: 1.3k
Eventual Rose x 141/Los Vaqueros. Eventual.
The best thing Rose could really say about that day was that it passed. Far, far too many of her customers commented on the graffiti when they came in, expressing concern and condolences. Her smile was brittle after fifteen minutes, and Gaz quickly but gently exiled her to making drinks and took over talking to people.
It stung, a little, but she didn’t fight him. She didn’t have the energy to fight him.
After the morning rush, he pushed a cup of tea at her. Rose briefly made a face but took the tea.
“I don’t need to be coddled.”
“Not coddling you,” he immediately denied. “I’d do this for any friend.”
She swallowed a mouthful of tea to hide the way her heart clenched at that declaration. Friend. She didn’t have a lot of those, even fewer she considered to be truly trustworthy, so to have him say it so easily… Well. She enjoyed that far too much.
“I don’t normally let friends work for me,” she drawled, catching the way his smile brightened. “But I suppose I’ll allow it for today.”
Gaz chuckled and nudged her. “What else needs doing?”
Rose thought about it for a moment, her gaze wandering over to the window. She wanted that gone, desperately. But she also wasn’t sure she was brave enough to face it long enough to scrub it off the window.
“Hey, told you we’d take care of that,” Gaz murmured, stepping closer and nudging her to pull her gaze back to him. “Don’t you worry about that.”
Rose raised one eyebrow. “That is literally physically impossible for me,” she drawled. “I’m going to worry about it until it’s gone.”
He huffed. “Trust me, won’t be there much longer.”
She narrowed her eyes a little but didn’t question it. Yet. “I suppose you could make a help wanted sign to stick in the window,” she offered casually.
“Yeah? Thinking you’re ready to hire someone?”
“Thinking I need to,” she corrected with a little huff. “Because I can’t work seven days a week.”
He nodded once, though she could see the wheels turning. “You have any social media for this place?”
“Uh. No.” Rose blinked, caught off guard.
“Shame.” Gaz smirked to himself as he located a pen.
“What are you planning?”
“Who, me?”
“Yes you, you meddler.”
“Nothing.” His grin had grown to shit-eating proportions now. “Just a question, love.”
“Uh huh. Sure.” Rose eyed him but decided he wasn’t going to give up the information that easily. She’d just have to play the long game.
Of course, she immediately got distracted when Price walked in, Soap and Rodolfo waving to her as they walked through the shop and out front, Soap carrying a bucket full of frothy soapy water.
“What?” She blinked, gaze darting between the men. This was beginning to feel distinctly tactical, the way they were tackling her problems.
“Security camera outside got a good enough shot of the man responsible,” John told her, leaning against the counter. Gaz slipped unobtrusively over to a table, out of the way. “How d’you want to handle this?”
Rose fidgeted, chewing on her lower lip. A quick glance at John’s eyes showed no judgment, no expectations. Just patience. “I’d rather not, actually.”
“You sure?”
She nodded once. “I mean, if there’s a way to get him on some kind of watchlist, make sure he doesn’t hurt anyone. But otherwise, keep me out of it.” Her smile was a little bitter. She wasn’t very brave, and she knew it. She liked things quieter.
John nodded once, and that was that. “You should have a few cameras in here,” he said, clearly moving on to the next item on his mental list.
“Never had the time to properly research that.” Rose shrugged. She also rarely had the disposable income to put towards something like that. Not that she was going to spell that out for John.
His lips twitched, and she thought he knew anyway. “One there,” he said, pointing to a spot above the prep area. “And one there.” He pointed again across the store. “Cover basically the whole place. Could do one in the back too, if you wanted.”
Rose tilted her head slowly, blinking. “Alright,” she agreed slowly. “Is there a certain one you recommend?”
He nodded, fighting down a smile. “Won’t take long to get them installed.”
“Wait, installed?” Rose blinked at him, feeling like she was missing some vital part of the conversation here.
“Got a dozen up in my office, darling,” John told her, no longer fighting down the smile. The corners of his eyes crinkled with his amusement, and she tried hard not to be distracted by that. “I’ll have Ghost bring ‘em down and we’ll install them.”
“But–” Rose blinked. Private security. Right. “John, those are for your business.”
John shrugged. “And? Can’t exactly report me to the boss, darling.”
She frowned at him, struggling for a moment to verbalize the rest of her concern. “I can’t”
“Love.” John lowered his voice a little, leaning in closer. “Don’t worry about it. Just let us do this, yeah?” His smile softened, something warm and almost teasing. “You can give us free tea if it makes you feel better.”
Rose chuckled, the tension in her chest releasing. “How about cookies?”
“Soap will be thrilled,” John drawled. “You want a camera in the back too?”
“Sure. Might as well.” Rose shrugged. The back wasn’t large - her tiny office and a tiny kitchen, just big enough for her to make cookies. The storage area was more of a closet, really, which is why she kept a close eye on supplies.
John nodded. “Good. Won’t take long.” One of his hands closed over hers, big and warm, his thumb pressing gently to the delicate underside of her wrist. “Worth it to have you safe.”
Rose swallowed but nodded slowly, heart thundering along in her chest. “Keep being so nice to me and you’ll never get rid of me,” she said, trying for joking but falling a little shy.
The flash of his grin was brief and amused. “Why do you think we keep coming back, darling?” He released her and stepped away, leaving her floundering.
A quick look showed that Soap and Rodolfo were working on scrubbing off the spraypaint, and Gaz was doing something with his phone, tongue poking out between his lips.
She had a little time.
Sneaking into the back was easy, and it took very little time to whip up a batch of cookie dough. A quick peek out front showed Gaz behind the counter, no customers in the shop, with John and Ghost working together quietly to install one of the cameras. Good enough.
The timer beeping pulled everyone’s attention briefly to the back, and Rose hummed a bit as she pulled the cookies out of the oven. They needed to cool a little before she took them off the baking sheets, but given five minutes, she’d be able to deliver fresh cookies to the guys.
To her guys.
The thought gave her pause, both because of how right it felt and how possessive it was. But, well… They were her friends now. And the way at least a couple of them flirted, more was not out of the question.
But it was a question for later, because she did not have the mental capacity for this right now.
Using two of the actual plastic plates she had, she carried the cookies out to one of the tables. “Anyone want a snack?”
Watching Soap try to dive on an entire plate for himself (only to be blocked by Ghost) was enough to have her nearly in stitches. But not enough to distract her from Gaz taking a picture of the plate in front of him before typing rapidly into his phone. She could ask… but she decided not to.
Especially since the thought of them being her guys circled around and around in her head, refusing to give her any rest.
She really needed to get herself sorted.

Chapter 7: The Yawning Grave

Death Lies In Wait
The whole night and next day pass and Mike has not returned to the house. Max had taken care of her chores, butchered and plucked a chicken and roasted it along with the last of their fresh vegetables in the oven all afternoon. Then she took the bones and made broth. She ate by herself, did some needlepoint and read her bible by the fire until she couldn’t stand it any more, making a mental note to ask Mr. Sinclair for a few books on his next journey out. He is due in a few days and Max is eager to see him again. With darkness starting to fall and her boredom and paranoia over last night's events rendering her completely agitated, there was nothing left to do except head upstairs to bed.
She sits at the little dressing table that was sure to have been hers . He had called her El in his sleep , and she wonders how she earned that nickname. It was intimately familiar and the way it fell out of his mouth and onto her cheek the previous evening sounded so incandescently… cherished .
Now El’s dressing table is littered with the few trinkets Max has brought from her parents’ home. There is a framed picture of her mother that sits up on one of the small shelves, a decorative flower hair comb her father had given her the summer before he died that she only wore on holidays and special occasions, a tiny figurine of a bird Billy had gifted her one Christmas, crudely whittled from wood, and her favorite childhood book who’s passages now only serve as a place for her to press flowers. Max scoops a bit of the salve she uses out of a glass jar and rubs it along her cuticles and into the skin of her palms where her calluses are dry and fights how it conjures up the same sensation of the mysterious creature’s fingers slipping along her skin and how her brine soaked lips felt when she kissed her.
Max blinks the images away and removes the pins from her hair. It falls down her back and glides over the laces of the corset she hasn’t removed yet. She rubs her fingers along her scalp and sighs contentedly at the sensation of her hair finally being free from its confines. She takes hold of a large section of it and starts working the tangles out with her hair brush. One stroke then another and another, her eyes wandering out the window towards the darkness that has entombed the house tonight. The two oil lamps are lit up brightly and they cast a rich, warm flickering glow to the room, and the cookstove and fireplace still raging downstairs has made the air hot and close.
Max catches sight of herself in the small wooden table mirror. Her skin is painted in yellows and orange hues that brings out her thick orange lashes and hair cascading around her shoulders. Her eyes are light blue like the sky on a fine day and she has a splattering of light freckles across her face and along the ridge of her nose. She finds them ruddy and unattractive, but her mother always scolded her for thinking so; for vanity was not something any respectable Quaker should harbor.
“God does not care what your earthly body looks like, Maxine. He only cares for the beauty in your soul,” she would say.
She was right, of course. And yet, the bitter part of her wishes her mother would also have lived by her late father’s example of fighting for women’s rights. As any admirable Quaker would. Max wishes she would have challenged her step-father’s wishes of sending her off to marry to a stranger against her wishes with a little more gumption. It went against every one of the teachings she had been brought up with. It felt like cowardice. It felt like a betrayal.
Even so, her mother was right. Vanity held no place in a respectable person’s life. Growing up, Max had no notion really of the need to feel pretty, didn’t think it of much importance. Any life she imagined for herself held no need for it. And certainly it was inherently useless to a lighthouse keeper’s wife, left on this spit of land to the raging wind and salt and loneliness.

Can they all be poly in a way?
First meeting of the Railway Speed Record Club (1934)
City of Truro (left) and NYC's famous no. 999 (center) were on hand Saturday to congratulate Flying Scotsman (right) on his record-breaking run of 100 mph. Though both engines had claims to the record in the past, this is the first time the achievement has been officially authenticated. There were no hard feelings, however, and all three appeared to be in high spirits over the feat. No telling who the next addition will be to this exclusive club!

Fall Into Me 12
Find the series masterlist
The much awaited dinner date! Featuring flirting, food, and comfort. And some very minor shenanigans (cough Alejandro cough).
Warnings: Flirting, sweetness, seriously you might get cavities, nothing hurts everything is goodness, alcohol mention, playful flirting.
Word count: 1.8k
Eventual f!OC Rose x poly everyone
Rudy was not nervous, not really. He already knew dinner would go well - he’d done the shopping this morning to be sure he had all the ingredients, and Alejo knew to keep out of the kitchen. He knew they both got along well with Rose, he knew that Rose liked them both.
So there was nothing to be nervous about.
But he still found himself walking in to the coffee shop fifteen minutes early.
“Hi,” Rose greeted, grinning at him, warm and pleased. She finished up the last latte for a group of teens, handing it over with an easy smile and a wish for a good day. The girls clustered around one table, all of them on their phones, giggling and showing each other things.
“Hi.” Rudy stopped in front of the counter, giving her a quick once-over. Her hair was back in a low ponytail today, and she looked fine. Relaxed.
“Can I get you anything?” She leaned one hip against the bar, tipping her head up to him. “We could take some back to Alejandro, too, if you wanted.”
Warmth bloomed in his chest and he couldn’t help but smile. She was just too cute. “I’ll let you decide,” he said, watching her with undeniable fondness.
Rose tapped her fingers against the countertop before she nodded, grabbing two cups and starting to add coffee to them. Rudy was more than content to simply watch her, keeping one eye on the time. (Not that he was anxious to bring her home, not at all.)
The girls all trooped out of the shop, one of them calling back a thank you as she left. Rudy smiled a little to himself.
“So, what are we having for dinner?” Rose didn’t look up from making drinks, though he could see the smile tilting the corners of her lips.
“You’ll see.” Rudy grinned. He couldn’t help but tease her, just a little.
Rose snorted but didn’t actually push, just putting two cups on the counter in front of him. “I’ll give it a couple more minutes and then close up,” she said, raising one eyebrow at him.
“Take your time,” Rudy assured her, taking the two cups over to a table so he’d be out of the way. But he did watch as she worked on another cup, setting it aside before she started cleaning. She still looked tired, dark circles under her eyes, but she looked happier. And that was something he wanted to see more of, all the time. Because she deserved to be happy.
He was not a man to be startled by or scared of his own feelings. He knew himself and he was comfortable in his own skin. So he was not surprised by the affection in his heart just from watching her work.
He was eager to see her in the apartment he shared with Alejo. To see how she fit in. And he knew she would. She was too warm not to.
Rose finished cleaning and flipped the sign on the door to ‘closed’ before locking the doors. “I’ll just be another minute,” she said, only a touch anxious.
“No rush,” Rudy assured her. “Can I help?”
“Thanks, but I just have to grab my stuff and make sure everything is locked up in the back.” She smiled at him and ducked into the back, humming softly to herself even as the music turned off.
Rudy double checked that one door was locked tight before he gathered up the two coffees, eyeing the shop. He knew Alejo had some ideas, and Rudy could definitely help with at least one of them.
“Okay.” Rose reappeared from the back, adjusting her purse and flipping off the lights. “I’m ready.”
“Don’t forget your drink.” Rudy nodded to the cup she’d set aside earlier.
“Oh! Thank you, I would have forgotten.” She laughed, shaking her head. “Sometimes I swear I’d forget my head if it wasn’t attached.”
Rudy laughed quietly and held the door for her, waiting patiently while she locked up. “It is not a far walk,” he assured her, though he did eye the shopping bag slung over her shoulder.
“Not a problem, I like walking.” She flashed him a smile, keeping close and letting him lead. “So, how impatient was Alejandro yesterday?”
This laugh was startled out of him, and he shook his head. “You know him too well, bonita,” he murmured. “He was not visibly impatient.”
“Just privately,” Rose guessed, shaking her head. “Well, I suppose that’s fair - I’ve been a touch impatient today.”
“Oh?”
“Of course.” Though a blush rose to her cheeks, Rose still looked at him. “Don’t get me wrong, I love talking to you all in the shop, but it’s nice to see you outside of work, too.”
“I’m sure we will be doing more of this,” Rudy agreed, stopping at a light and taking a moment to look at her, only to find her already looking at him. Her blush deepened, spreading across her face, but she didn’t look away.
“I hope so,” she agreed. “Do you all live close enough to walk?”
Rudy shrugged. “Soap is the closest, then Gaz. They walk. Price sometimes drives, as does Ghost. It also depends on the needs of the day.”
“Makes sense.” Rose stepped off the curb, and Rudy kept an eye out, because he always did. “How much of the area have you explored?”
That topic lasted them the rest of the walk, talking about parks and tiny corner stores and hole in the wall restaurants they’d each discovered. By the time he unlocked the apartment door, Rudy had a list of places he wanted to try.
“Make yourself at home,” he told Rose, toeing his shoes off and carrying the coffees over to the table. He was careful to give her a bit of space to look around, let her familiarize herself with the space. It was a decent sized apartment for the two of them, with two bedrooms. The kitchen and living space were not separated, and large windows dominated one wall of the living area, letting in plenty of natural light. They hadn’t changed much about the coloring of the apartment, all warm neutrals, but they had brought things from home to make it more personal.
It was still a bit odd, to be here, but… Well. Things had changed.
That was sometimes the way of the world.
“I love these windows,” Rose said softly, walking up to the nearest one to look outside. “What a view.”
“Alejo likes it, too,” Rudy told her with an easy smile. “It’s part of why we chose this building.”
She slanted a look at him, and he could see her thinking things through. But she didn’t ask. Didn’t push. Just smiled and padded over to the kitchen, socked feet quiet on the floor.
“So! Where do we start?”
Rudy both was and wasn’t surprised at how well they worked together in the kitchen. He was used to tight quarters, to giving orders, to making things work. But this? The two of them? There was no making it work. There was soft talking and laughter and casual nudges and smiles. Rose moved around him, never in the way but always within arms-reach, learning the layout and helping wherever she could.
She just… fit, in a way that he rarely found. In the way that he and Alejo did. In the way that Soap and Ghost had, back in Las Almas.
That afternoon only secured his conviction that she belonged with them, one way or another.
The front door opened and pulled both of their attention away briefly from food prep. “You’re late,” Rudy called.
“Sorry.” Alejo didn’t sound very sorry, but that was typical. “Hola, cariño.” He stepped into the kitchen to pull Rose into a hug.
At least until Rudy swatted him.
“Out of the kitchen,” Rudy scolded. “Shoo.”
Rose very nearly cackled at the exaggerated pout on Alejo’s face. “You heard the boss,” she teased with absolutely zero sympathy.
Alejo pouted all the way to the couch, where he promptly got involved in something on his tablet. Rudy left him to it.
Alejo did rouse himself to set the table, opening a bottle of wine for the three of them to share. Rose helped carry food to the table, eyeing the dishes like she wasn’t sure where to start.
Rudy made sure he caught her reaction to her first taste. Her eyes went wide, then half-lidded as a nearly-vulgar sound escaped her throat.
“Oh my god that’s so good,” she muttered, looking down at her plate. “Holy shit.”
Rudy chuckled softly. “You’re welcome to dinner any time,” he murmured, catching Alejo’s eyes. “We’re both happy to have you.”
“Tempting,” Rose murmured, gaze flitting between the two men. Her smile was a little shy but a lot pleased. “Just means I’ll have to bake more for you.”
“Now who’s tempting?” Alejo shot back with an easy smile.
Rose laughed quietly. “Mutual temptation, then.”
Rudy just smiled. He could get used to this, and he knew Alejo wanted to as well.
Dinner passed easily, bantering and teasing keeping the conversation lively. Rudy was determined to send her home with the leftovers, a sentiment he knew Alejo shared.
“Do you have time to stay for a movie?” Rudy asked as he gathered up plates.
Rose considered that, checking her phone. “Yeah,” she agreed. “I’ve got time.”
“Go, relax,” Alejo said, shooing them back out of the kitchen. “I’ll wash up.”
“We have a deal,” Rudy said, gently guiding her to the couch. He dropped down on one end, giving her space to decide where she wanted to sit. “Whoever cooks does not have to clean.”
“Alejandro cooks too?” Rose sat next to him slowly, as if waiting for a chastisement. When it didn’t come, she relaxed back into the couch.
“He does,” Rudy agreed, glancing at her in amusement. “His mama’s recipes, mostly.”
“You kicked him out earlier.”
“He is also a menace when I am trying to cook.”
Rose giggled, slapping one hand over her mouth. Rudy just smiled, pleased.
“I am not,” Alejo called from the kitchen, making Rose laugh harder.
Rose shook her head, grinning. “Dinner and entertainment,” she teased gently. “Definitely going to have to come over more often.”
“Any time.” Rudy meant that, and by the way her smile softened, he thought Rose knew that.
He would admit to being disappointed that she wouldn’t let either of them walk her home, but she did text them good night after she got home.
