summary: explaining my love for different taylor swift songs, eras, and taylor overall to my long time crush, jj, a few months after topper cheated on me with sarah

warnings: jj being sweet and hot, oc was cheated on, oc being a lil horny

“what’s your favorite taylor swift song?” jj asked me one night as we shared a few joints.

“it depends on my mood, i guess.” i told him, shrugging before taking a hit. “i like different songs from different albums. i also like different songs depending on my mood.”

“you make me listen to taylor’s version.” he stated.

“do you know why i make you listen to taylor’s version?” i asked, shifting around in the hammock.

“something about she re-recorded them.” jj responded, dipping his arm around my neck. the butterflies erupted in my stomach, i tried to keep my body in check, but my cheeks heated up. thankfully i could pass it as the weed. i tugged my shirt down, as a way to distract myself.

“taylor use to work for big machine records. they produced her first six albums. then, she switched to universal music group slash republic records. when she switched, big machine wasn’t to thrilled with her. they represent big names, but she was arguably the biggest. brett young, lady a, thomas rhett, more country artists i guess. they sold taylor’s music -”

jj cut me off. “how do you sell somebody’s music?”

“well the company that produces somebody’s music usually owns their music i guess.” i took a quick hit from jj’s blunt.

“okay, continue.” jj told me, puffing more of the weed.

“so big machine sold taylor’s music to scooter braun, who’s arguably a dick, but that’s besides the point. scooter represents a lot of big names too, and use to represent taylor. he represents justin bieber, demi lovato, ariana grande, lil dicky, for example. taylor and scooter use to be cool but when he bought taylor’s music from big machine, that didn’t sit well with her.” i stopped to breathe and take another hit, squeezing jj’s hand that was next to mine. he squeezed back,

“why did she stay with big machine for so long?” jj asked. “if she didn’t like them, she should’ve left.”

“we’ll, it’s a contract. she signed saying that she would produce her first six albums with them. they opened her music, the master copies. when she switched to universal, she got to own her master copies of the albums she produced with them.”

“master?”

“the original song.”

“this is confusing.” jj said, scrunching his nose. i smiled at him, finding it adorable he was putting up with me explaining taylor swift. “it’s a very complicated relationship.”

“there’s more.” i never did this when i dated topper. he was always interested in sports or what he and his friends were doing. he didn’t want to know about me, much less my interests.

“keep going.”

“are you sure?” i was surprised jj wanted me to continue. “i don’t want to annoy you.”

“you never annoy me.” jj said upfront and fast. “if it’s important to you, it’s important to me as your best friend to love it too.” best friend. i sighed. that’s all i was. his best friend.

“uh, yeah.”

“you listen to me talk about cars and you couldn’t tell the battery from the engine.” he had a point. “but you listen to me talk about cars because you support me and my interests. it’s healthy for us to do this even if we aren’t passionate about each others interests.”

“how do you know all this stuff about relationships? you and john b have virtually all the same interests.”

“have you met pope? or kie? or sarah?”

i sucked in a breath when he mentioned sarah.

“oh shit,” he sat up quick, making the hammock sway. thankfully, he set his foot on the ground stabilizing us. “i’m sorry. i shouldn’t have said her name.”

“no,” i said quickly, sitting up myself. “no, sarah, she didn’t - no, it’s fine.”

“but topper -“

“he told sarah we were done. i talked to sarah and topper. topper told sarah that we on a break, which we were, but we agreed not to be with other people.” i explained quickly. “sarah didn’t know.”

jj nodded slowly. “go back to taylor,” he suggested as he laid across from me this time. i put my legs in his lap and tried to ignore the goosebumps i felt as he ran his fingers across my calf.

“so scooter has all the master copies of taylor’s songs from her first six albums. he paid so much money for them and he’s in control of those songs. when they sold those songs to scooter, she felt betrayed, especially since she had a lot of friends from big machine. they used her.”

“god, people are so shitty.” jj commented, before offering me his beer. i shook my head.

“i don’t wanna cross tonight.” i smiled at the offer. “i need to do school stuff at some point.”

“you could just crash with me in the spare, i gotta get up for the shop tomorrow. around 11.”

i was true. our spare room had basically become jj’s home. when jj tried to go back to his dad’s house, i had just ended things with topper. in my time at home more, i noticed jj had practically moved into the spare. i stayed on the couch a lot, noticing jj coming more often. lately, his dad had been worse than normal, so jj opted to stay at the chateau.

“maybe. but i don’t like beer.” i scrunched my nose.

“yeah, you like your twisted tea.” he pulled out out of the cooler that i didn’t know was in there.

“jj!” i was surprised he got me a pack of raspberry twisteds.

“what? a guys always gotta be prepared for his girl.” my heart drummed. his girl.

“but, it’s a lot just to get the raspberry pack!” i patted my pocket, pulling out the money i had in there.

“put it away,” he scoffed at me. i rolled my eyes before sitting in the hammock. i tried to shove it at him, but he wouldn’t let me. “seriously, you’re not paying.”

“but,” i moved my wrist with the money close to him, faltering when he grabbed it. it wasn’t tight, it was firm. jj was always firm in his grip. stabilizing.

“no buts.” he squeezed slightly before tugging me to him.

“okay, jj,” i relented, curling back into his side. i rested my head on his shoulder, the feeling so pure and real. he opened the tea for me and i took a drink before putting it on the stump near us.

“is there more to taylor swift?”

“i mean yes, but that was the majority. kelly clarkson tweeted about it when taylor expressed her anger at the situation and told taylor to just re-record the her early music, so taylor did.”

“good for kelly. women supporting women is hot.” i busted out laughing at that.

“you’re funny maybank.”

“gotta keep you on your toes.”

i smiled up at him, hazy. he smiled down at me, a twinkle in his eye. he reached over and pushed a few strands of hair out of my face, rubbing his thumb against my cheek.

“jj,” my voice hitched, the tea settling in and mixing the weed was making me fuzzy, but i was present enough to know what was going on.

“you being a nerd is not something i expected.” he whispered.

my eyes fluttered closed. “i’m a nerd about more than just taylor swift.”

“yeah?” his hand traveled to my neck and his thumb now found home against my pulse, which was now racing. “like what?”

i took a deep breath to steady myself. “i don’t know, random shit, marvel, bridgerton, my planner and pens.”

“it’s hot when you get all into it.”

my eyes shot open and met his blue ones. “don’t say stuff you don’t mean j.” i couldn’t handle another heartbreak, especially from jj.

“i’m not lying.” he said with finality in his voice. “you’ve always been hot. i’m sorry you don’t see it, but it’s literally the truth.”

“jj,” i pleaded, for what, i didn’t know.

“i’m not fighting with you on this. you can’t change my mind.” jj was stubborn, really stubborn and if he put his foot down, good luck changing it. “you ready for bed? you can come to the shop and work while i’m working.”

i pondered for a moment, searching his eyes. “sure.” i decided, wiggling to get up. “i need to charge my phone.”

“damn, here i was thinking we could sleep here.”

“never pretty boy. i need a pillow.” jj grumbled something out about my pillow obsession before we got out of the hammock. he grabbed my hand and tugged me toward the chateau, fingers threading with mine.

on e we got there, we completed our nightly rituals separately. i brushed my teeth, my hair, washed my face with cold water, put my glasses away and plugged my phone it before changing into shorts and an old t shirt.

jj was in the spare, but when i finished tugging on my shirt, he was standing next to me.

“jesus, j. you scared the shit outta me!”

“sorry. didn’t mean to.”

i sighed out a breath. “it’s all good. what’s up?”

“sleep with me tonight.”

“j…”

“please?” i could never truly say no to jj and he knew it. he tugged me to the spare and we crawled into the bed. jj wrapped an arm around me, tugging him to his side. “night pretty girl.”

“night, pretty boy.”

Seeing Stars! The 9 Most Successful 'Voice' Competitors of All Time

'The Voice' may never find its Carrie Underwood but that's okay.

One of the major complaints about The Voice is that it has yet to launch a major recording career like American Idol did in its early days. But host Carson Daly says that the days of discovering a Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson on a TV show are long gone.

“Your measuring stick is antiquated because of the way that technology has proliferated,” Daly exclusively tells Parade. “For instance, I could never do TRL [his Total Request Live show] again because this generation has the internet and doesn’t need MTV to get music. There are a lot of YouTubers, and my kids listen to music of people that you have never heard of, that I have never heard of. For some people, just getting to a place where they can support themselves making music, thanks to The Voice—that’s winning.”

And The Voice has several of those types of winners. Former contestants, including a couple of Grammy nominees, who are grateful to the show because their lives changed 100 percent, because as a result of appearing on The Voice, they now make their entire living making music, rather than having to have a day job to pay the bills.

Koryn Hawthorne (Season 8)

was a member of Pharrell Williams’ team and finished fourth in her season. She has gone on to have a successful gospel career and was nominated twice for Grammys in the Gospel Performance/Song category: in 2019 for “Won’t He Do It” and in 2020 for “Speak the Name.” She has received several other nominations as well, including Billboard Awards and Soul Train Music Awards. She even broke the record for the longest chart-topping woman on the Hot Gospel Songs chart.

Nicolle Galyon (Season 2)

got just one coach to turn (Adam Levine) when she sang “You Save Me” during her Blind Audition. The country singer was eliminated during the Battle Rounds but made a discovery along the way: She didn’t want to sing, she wanted to write songs. While on the show, she met performers RaeLynn and Miranda Lambert (who was married to Blake Shelton at the time) and credits those friendships for launching her songwriting career. She earned her first No. 1 song with “We Were Us,” performed by Keith Urban and Lambert. She also has co-written songs for Lady A, Kenny Chesney, Florida Georgia Line and many others and co-wrote and co-produced RaeLynn’s first full-length album, WildHorse. Gaylon has two Grammy nominations for Best Country Song: in 2015 for Miranda Lambert’s “Automatic” and in 2019 for Dan + Shay’s “Tequila.”

Cassadee Pope (Season 3)

was the first female country singer to win The Voice. The former member of Blake Shelton's team has gone on to find success in country music, but a high point was when she and Chris Young received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Think of You” in 2017.  Her single "Tomorrow Night" was released in Sept. and was followed by her third album, Thrive, in October.

Christina Grimmie (Season 3)

finished in third place on The Voice, and went on to open for Selena Gomez and The Scene, and perform backup vocals for Allstar Weekend and the Jonas Brothers. Christina's career was on the upswing—she had 2 million YouTube subscribers—when she was shot to death during a post-concert meet-and-greet with fans on June 10, 2016, in Orlando, Fla. She was 22.

Danielle Bradbery (Season 4 winner)

was only 16 when she won The Voice, the youngest winner at that point in time but no longer the record. Since graduating from Team Blake Shelton, Bradbery has gone on to have a successful country music career with 15 songs on the Hot Country chart, including "Goodbye Summer" with Thomas Rhett which rose to No. 39 in 2018. Her 2020 single "Never Have I Ever" reached No. 58 on U.S. Country Airplay, and her most-streamed song, "Sway," has 50 million streams. In July 2021, she released her latest single, "Stop Draggin' Your Boots."

Morgan Wallen (Season 6)

who was initially on Team Usher, but later stolen by Adam Levine, was eliminated in the Playoffs but soon headed to Nashville to try his hand at country music, rather than the pop songs he sang on the show. He had almost instant success, dropping four No. 1 singles, winning the CMA award for New Artist of the Year and releasing the double album Dangerous. “He was being hailed as the next big thing, maybe the next big crossover artist from country,” executive producer Audrey Morrissey says. Today, Wallen is more famous for getting in trouble. He got booted off of Saturday Night Live for breaking COVID-19 protocols in late 2020 and was banned from country radio after he was caught on video hollering a racial slur in February 2021.

Jordan Smith (Season 9)

was a four-chair turn who chose Team Adam. He went on to write “Ashes” for the Deadpool 2 soundtrack, which was performed by Celine Dion. In addition, he's had three No. 1 songs on the Hot Christian Songs chart and three top 10s. Jordan represented the state of Kentucky for NBC’s American Song Contest in 2022, for which he wrote and performed “Sparrow.” He finished in third place.

Sawyer Fredericks (Season 8)

The winner from Team Pharrell had an original song, “Silent World,” featured on the Season 6 debut of the Netflix original series Longmire, which aired in 2017, and his song “This Fire” was covered by John Ondrasik for a 2018 episode of Code Black. His  latest album debuted in 2020 called Flowers for You.

Loren Allred (Season 3)

was eliminated in the Playoffs but went on to make her Billboard Hot 100 debut with the Platinum-selling "Never Enough" from the musical soundtrack to The Greatest Showman. This past January, she was the featured singer on the original song “Start a Wave” when “World of Color – One” for Disney 100 debuted at Disneyland. Strangely, though, she made a return to reality TV, auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent’s 15th season in 2022, finishing in ninth place. In addition, she performs on Michael Bublé's Love album for a duet of "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and alongside David Foster, as part of his An Intimate Evening PBS concert special and album.

About me

Hi I’m zurgles. I’m 31, black (family from east africa, born and raised in the US, lived pretty evenly all over the place), queer (might be nonbinary or transman not sure, mostly attracted to women and queer folk), and schizoaffective bipolar type (they’re pretty sure about this but other possibilities are bipolar with schizophrenia or just schizophrenia - been on risperidone for over a year either way and have responded really well to it and have had no psychotic or mood symptoms), and diagnosed adhd combined type.

I’ve been on and off tumblr since I was around 15 or 16, so about fifteen years now. It’s been around eight years (?) since I’ve been on tumblr.

I like comedy (especially stand up comedy), anime, discworld, youtubers (like the try guys, thomas sanders, rhett and link, calebcity, victor pope jr vines), food, and drawing though I haven’t drawn much since my last experience with psychosis. Hoping to draw more and post here :)

I live with my mom and work as a cashier at a grocery store. Thinking about going back to college for something like nursing but kind of nervous. Used to be a computer science major before my last experience with psychosis. Not sure if I want to pursue CS anymore because of my history with carpal tunnel and tendonitis, even though I enjoyed it.

I try to find the humor in things and even though psychosis was traumatizing and I live in fear of it happening again (even though I have no reason to believe my meds will stop working), I still find the shit I went through and the stuff I believed and experienced pretty funny so I may post stories or badly drawn comics here.

I also have a tarot deck collection that I cherish even though I haven’t looked at them much since psychosis. I tried while I was in the tail end of it and found exercising the magical thinking interpreting part of my brain made my brain blurry and made it hard to think clearly in general so I got wary of it. I used to be pretty pagan and while I credit praying to my gods and trying to meditate while in psychosis to helping me realize what was happening and to get help, I’ve become more of an atheist after the fact. I think grounding myself in the real world just feels more comforting. I’ve flirted with atheism since I was a kid anyway. I still have an altar and some magick books but they’ve basically been gathering dust.

I might use my tarot decks as prompts to write about the card meanings in a secular way. There are a couple on my wishlist too, like the Majestic Earth tarot and the Piatnik Wien tarot.

I think I have around 30 decks if you include oracle and therapy decks. My prized one is the Tyldwick Tarot, first edition.

One of my first decks is the Shadowscapes tarot and it’s my favorite one to read with. A deck that I gave away and want to get again is the Shrine of the Black Medusa tarot.

I’ve been into tarot on and off technically since I was around 11, but more practically since I was 21, so ten years on and off. I’m shit at reading though. I’m not very intuitive but writing a reading out tends to help.

I got the Thoth tarot kind of late in the game and fell in love with the minors and realized I should’ve just gotten it from the jump because I’m more left brained anyway and like complex things but it’s okay. My training is more RWS based as a result. It was frustrating learning RWS in hindsight since I kept digging for meaning that wasn’t there (or was on the surface) when I was supposed to be telling my own story, but that’s an empowering thing about the RWS, so I’m not too disappointed.

I have the Book of Thoth and I’ve listened to about all of Fortune’s Wheelhouse several times and used Esoteric Meanings to interpret cards before but I still haven’t really made a proper study of it. To be honest it took me a few years to accept that the RWS and Thoth systems really were distinct from one another.

I’ve also been interested in hellenistic or ancient astrology but don’t know much yet. This doesn’t really fit with my atheism, but it’s something I found fun to learn about in the past before shit went down. Tbh I also find astrology restrictive in terms of feeling trapped by fate and destiny, so I prefer to think of it as a goofy hobby or a fun creative exercise or maybe a way of organizing my imagination once I get better at it, if I find it doesn’t feel limiting and it actually provides insight. Not planning on pursuing this much anytime soon, but you never know.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, or the fascination of a child of 1970

Fascination: this is what summarizes the irresistible attraction between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

"Fascination" holds the scent of intertwined passions and dangers, violence and sweetness, fights and tender words, hypnotism and rejection, reunions and separations, the unsuitability of being one, but the impossibility of living apart.

"Fascination": "A mirage of beauty of the ages, irresistible like the pull of gravity.” (Verbatim of Richard Burton's description of Elizabeth, in his private diaries.)

Fatal fascination: two days before his death, Richard Burton confided to a friend actor who came to visit him in Switzerland - in a low voice, so that his wife at the time (his fourth marriage), could not hear him: "She still fascinates, you know..."

Fascination: as soon as their illicit affair was revealed, "the scandal" decried even by the Pope, their story unleashed the hysteria of the "paparazzi" - a function of the scandal journalists invented in "La Dolce Vita", and pushed to its paroxysm for the Burton/Taylor couple -, to satisfy the voracity of their admirers, all over the world.

Fascination still as intense so many years after their death by renewed generations addicted to digitized memoranda on YouTube consecrating the timelessness of the couple of lovers of the 20th century.

Fascination finally because they filled the imagination of a child of 1970 for idols of flesh and passion who had for rivals only Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler!

Three forgotten magazine cutouts

This fascination with her four movie icons was displayed all over the childlike wallpaper in her bedroom with illustrations cut out from magazines.

Then, naturally, life took its toll. Her passion waned as the Burton/Taylor couple remarried, only to divorce immediately.  As for the little girl of 1970, real life was waiting for her.

 Scarlett O'Hara, Elizabeth Taylor, Rhett Butler, Richard Burton, were carelessly filed away in a drawer of the past. The precious documents, hard won and costly acquired, were torn up and thrown away with indifference.

The fascination, the passion, the obsession, then extinguished with a chokehold and petrified like the useless memories that litter a life.

The destruction of these cumbersome witnesses on glossy paper was massive, because it was necessary to leave the room on the walls to other stars more anchored in her "high school" years.

Except for three images of Richard Burton furiously embracing a desperate Elizabeth Taylor in a car. They radiated such an emotional charge that she did not have the heart to sweep them away carelessly like the other witnesses of an innocence that no longer existed.

Vivid reminiscences

These crudely cut out pictures had such a magnetism that when she found them by chance in an old misfiled file, an emotion crossed the time.

To transport her more than fifty years back in time!

Isn't it strange that these documents arouse in the middle-aged adult as much emotion - more emotion? - than some of the testimonies locked up in her family albums?

After all this time?

And yet... After being completely forgotten for decades, these reproductions have come to life before her eyes. So much so that she can hear her heart pounding at the mention of the feelings felt by the actors - in the movies and in "their" real life.
