Let’s talk about opossum ears (kinda long)

The ears are probably the thing most frequently portrayed wrong about possums. There’s a few different ways they tend to be portrayed, and I’m going to go through all of them and give some reference to how their ears actually are. For now it'll be about Virginia opossums, but the information is broadly applicable to all possums as a whole

The most common way possums are portrayed is to give them mouse ears. Mouse ears have a darker color and fur on the outside of the ear, while the inside is pink and fleshy. Some examples of mouse eared possums in media are below. If you look at possum ears they don’t have this coloring

Mouse ears give a pretty good shape, but possums in the Didelphis genus (like the Virginia and common opossums) have the same color on both sides of their ears, and no fur on them. Their ears are fleshy and waxy textured. The white eared opossums in the genus have white ears instead of the black that the others have. Both types of ears have the same coloration on both sides. The pink/black splotches on the ears are discolorations, and they show up on both sides of the ear. These are often caused by temperature dependent things like frostbite, but can also occur from injury or just be natural for that possum. Joeys start out with all pink/white ears and then they fill out to be black (unless they’re white eared)

Australasian possums like the brushtail here do have more mouse/cat like ears with a furry outside and a pink fleshy interior. But opossums don’t

Another thing that’s often wrong about possum ears is the shape. This possum shown in Teachers Pet has cat like ears with the same furry exterior/pink interior issue

But possum ears have more of a curled flower petal or trumpet shape to them. If you look at Beaker here, the shape is more clear. The ears start like a thin tube coming out of the skull that expands outwards, then flares out to be flat at the ends. The base of the ear is small and the ear broadens out away from the skull. From the front their ears look very oval shaped and more flat, but from the side they’re very thin and just curve outward. The ears are shaped like the petals on this flower

Some other examples of possum ears from other angles. The exact shape really depends on the species. Virginia opossums have more oval shaped ears, but they can also be a bit pointy. The white eared possum species are usually pointy, but can be oval.

Another way possums ears get portrayed is just as the same color as their fur, but their ears don’t look like that. Their ears are fleshy and do not have the same colors as their fur, because their ears are hairless

Some good examples of Virginia opossum ears are Kylie from Fantastic Mr Fox and Ozzie from Over the Hedge. They both have good shapes and coloring while being stylized in their own. This possum in BoJack Horseman is also pretty good for a more simplistic version

What I mentioned applies mostly to the Didelphis genus opossums. Other possums will have different nuances in the shapes/coloring of the ears, but the same general principles apply. They’re all fleshy/waxy ears without hair on them. They have a small base and are shaped like flower petals.

Just look them up and use a reference for possum ears! They're not just rats or mice or cat ears.

recently i pulled away the paving stones that laid against the side of our house for the last decade, perhaps, and found a dead possum. vulture culture details under the cut.

it was completely decomposed aside from a few tufts of sandy hair, not even connected to the body. it had been sheltered here for years; i have no idea how many. its skull was inverted and i could see one lone fang poking straight up, shining. one jaw mandible was visible beyond it, the other i couldn't see. the entire thing was exposed and fascinating. the tiny paw bones. thin delicate ribs. chunky vertebrae in a line, and then falling individually. the tail in one whole piece.

i kept one paving stone to shelter it until i could get to it. i'm unsure how much energy i'll be able to devote to it. though i love vulture culture and have many friends into it, it's my first time practicing myself. i really couldn't ask for a better tryout; there's practically no flesh or smell to deal with.

today i've been spending taking the skull and jaw bones (the second mandible was beneath the head, found!), soaking them in soapy water and brushing them with an old toothbrush. there's almost nothing but dirt attached to it; the skull is almost clean already.

my friends joke i'm doing necromancy, but i've been struck instead by the sense of wonder and appreciation i've had working on it. i haven't touched the bone with a bare finger yet but i'm looking forward to it; it feels so smooth even through gloves. the twin feelings of delicacy and strength in the bone is fascinating. i poured soapy water through the empty brain case and watched it pour out the sinus cavities.

the cats watch me scrub bones on the front porch. after i get the gloves off and wash up, i pet them and feel those same fragile, strong bones under my hands, the shape just a little different. the depth of love and reverence i feel for these little animals; and the other one i have out on the porch, being remembered, being appreciated.

Apatemyids were a group of unique early placental mammals that lived during the first half of the Cenozoic, known from North America, Europe, and Asia. Due to their specialized anatomy their evolutionary relationships are rather murky (they were traditionally part of the convoluted mess that was "Insectivora"), but currently they're thought to be a very early offshoot of the Euarchontoglires, the branch of placentals that includes modern rodents, lagomorphs, treeshrews, colugos, and primates.

Living in what is now western Europe during the mid-Eocene, around 47 million years ago, Heterohyus nanus was a small apatemyid about 30cm long (~12") – although just over half of that length was made up of its tail.

Like other apatemyids it had a proportionally big boxy head, with large forward-pointing rodent-like incisors in its lower jaw and hooked "can-opener-shaped" incisors in its upper jaw.

The rest of its body was rather slender, and fossils with soft tissue preservation from the Messel Pit in Germany show that it had a bushy tuft of longer fur at the end of its long tail.

But the most distinctive feature of apatemyids like Heterohyus were their fingers, with highly elongated second and third digits resembling those of modern striped possums and aye-ayes. This suggests they had a similar sort of woodpecker-like ecological role, climbing around in trees using their teeth to tear into bark and expose wood-boring insect holes, then probing around with their long fingers to extract their prey.

My sister, parents, and friends all think I'm a furry. IM NOT A FURRY! There's just a bunch of coincidences!

Like, everyone had a crush on Mr Wolf and Diane from The Bad Guys! They're just hot! They're the exception!

And Vivziepop just makes a lot of animal based characters! It's not my fault some of them are hot! Like yeah, Husk is a cat. But he looked good in a suit, okay?

And that goes with Alastor, Angeldust, and Vaggie! You can barely tell Angel and Vaggie are supposed to be a moth and a spider! It's a coincidence! And yeah, Stolas is an owl, and Loona is a wolf, so??? Stolas is very likable, and Loona's design is just really pretty!

And Striker may be a snake/rat looking demon, but he's also the exception!

And yeah, in Hunter's (Golden Guard's) first introduction, his mask was a barn owl. BIG DEAL. It doesn't mean anything that he became my favorite character!

And yeah, I made multiple animal based characters! But that's because they're fantasy stories, and making animal characters are super common! And animals are really fun to make characters out of!

And maybe younger me loved to play Animal Jam, collected LPS, loved Disney animals, and looked at furry art online, and then made a fursona when I was 8. Big deal! I was 8! It means nothing! And maybe sometimes I still draw myself with possum ears or a raccoon tail. That doesn't make me a furry!

And maybe I still love drawing animals, and I love making bug characters or a lot of drawings I make have animalistic aspects to them. And I only have one sexualizwd drawing of an anthropomorphic spider I did! It was for anatomy, and drawing basic human anatomy is boring! And yeah, my friends constantly compare me to a possum and raccoon, my discord pfp is a raccoon, and I constantly use possums as a reaction image. These prove nothing! Everyone does these things, right?

- Jeff never expected to be in a parental/big brother roll again. He's supposed to be the most notorious and feared killer there is. Not fucking playing single dad over here! So imagine his surprise when the slenderman brought in a child no more than 4 years old and apparently the kid has no fear factor they just ran up to the biggest baddest person there was and befriended him. Ever since then Jeff became wrapped around their little finger.

-very over protective of them. He won't let anyone train them except for him and him alone. And if he has to let someone else take the reins for a bit he's watching them closely like a hawk. Trains them in relatively age appropriate ways as they grow up. They play pretend fucked up scenarios like how missions work or what to do when things go wrong how to interact with the other creeps. Think of it like 'it's me your scumbag dad' videos. He will teach them how to curse and questionable life lessons as they grow up.

-Toby is way too much of a nervous wreck to take care of himself let alone anyone else. And ever since Lyra died he's been too afraid to get attached to someone ever again despite the void in his heart. So imagine to everyone's surprise when the slenderman brought home a child no more than 9 years old. Clearly traumatized and heart broken and shooken up about whatever happened that brought them there. Toby protested about putting the kid with him as slenderman wouldn't take no for an answer. He's holding the kid out like how Mike wazozski holds out boo for the first time.

-at first he tried to distance himself from the child. Going as far as hitting and being mean to the child. He left them in the woods once. However that child was a persistent little creature and always found their way back to Toby. They followed him around everywhere like a lost puppy until he started to warm up to them after accepting that they'll forever always be there. He teaches them a lot of nature stuff. How to track. How to survive in the woods and to fight off predators. The raccoons and possums are your friends. He actually enjoyed being the big brother for once and the child filled the void in his heart that he desperately craved for.

-Jane was thrilled when the slenderman brought home a little girl. She's always had mothering instincts and she immediately scooped the child into her arms and the rest is history.

-very protective of her and keeps her the he'll away from Jeff. Going as far to lock her in her bedroom when Jane or anyone else she trusted wasn't around to accompany her. Keeps her on a very strict schedule for training and life to establish a routine before she allows the freedom of leeway and slight change of plans. Especially establishes a beauty routine. Jane teaches her that there are more than one ways to kill. Brains over brawn. Beauty comes second. Occasionally if they have free time they will have a girl's night where they do spa treatments, each other's hair, makeup and they eat relatively healthy snacks as they watch movies and gossip.

-EJ was quite confused when the slenderman dropped off a child to him with no word. Is it food? A sacrifice? A new prey?. He was curious and the child was non verbal so it's not like they could answer either besides head nods and writing and facial expressions and body language. Really he ended up not caring and didn't really bother the child as long as the child did not bother him.

-it all changed when the child showed intrigued in anatomy. After he caught them reading his old college textbooks. They communicate by sounds at this point. Showed them on a dead person where the organs were and why they were important. Later on the child became more of the strong silent type and was basically EJs assistant. They have a mentor/apprentice relationship. The kid knows first aid as well and makes a fine medic

-Nina was hyperactively jumping up and down for joy when the slenderman brought a 10 year old girl home who had the same aesthetic as her. They clicked instantly and immediately bounced off of each other's crack head energy.

-shes Nina's partner in crime and has never separated from her and Nina won't trade that for the world.

Ideas for horroblins:

- they came from the Faron caves

- they have troops like monkeys and apes

- they eat mostly meat like moblins

- they cling to walls and ceiling due to their homes tend to become homes for gloom spawn or tunnels end up crossing tunnels with gibdo tunnels so they are in safe distance from gloom spawn but also don’t get in gibdo who are doing their own stuff for their hives, but it is funny when a gibdo is clinging to a wall to avoid others and a horroblin bumps into it then go their own ways

- the platforms in caves are where horroblins sleep when their arms are tired or were they store food

- baby horroblins will cling to their parents even when upside down and they will do this until they can hold their own weight upside down and that’s normally when they are age equivalent of 2-3

- horroblins are as strong as moblins even having a hard head for headbutting

- but bewear if wearing the horroblin mask and having food you need to make sure the troop your going in to do research doesn’t have many young as if they do you may get adopted

- horroblins troops have a matriarch in said troop

- male and female horrorblins are very maternal and will see anything weak like a unarmed traveller or young child on their own as a youngling they will pull said traveller or child into their cave and treat them like they would their own young however they will give back the child or traveller if people come looking for them

- despite being cave dweller they aren’t affected by the sun they just prefer to come out at night to hunt and etc.

- they can mimic calls of other animals to lure them into their caves to kill but they won’t do so if a hunter or something is near as they risk their home being found by hylians that would harm them

It'd also kinda line up with their anatomy as they have like what looks like some mix of scales/fur on their back that looks very grabbable
