______ Day 3: nephrite Nephrite is a semi-precious stone, most often green, used especially by the Maori of Aotearoa to make ornaments and ceremonial blades (for example, for toki poutangata adzes or patu clubs). The ornament pictured is called a kākā pōria; it is a ring for the legs of domesticated parrots whose call was used to lure other birds into the hunters' nets. When not worn by the bird, it was also used as an ear ornament by the Maori. Nephrite-based stonecutting and arts and crafts workshops are still very productive in Aotearoa; there, the mineral is called pounamu and is part of the taonga, or treasures, that have always belonged to the Maori. This object is kept in the collections of the Te Papa Museum in Auckland, Aotearoa. #Pacifinktober #Pacifinktober2022 #Maori #Aotearoa #taonga #pounamu #kakaporia #tepapa #tepapamuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/CjPbw1KoOdI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Video of pounamu being smashed with hammer creates upset
A video of a man smashing pounamu with a hammer has caused outrage on social media.
The destruction of the taonga appears to relate to a fringe fundamentalist Christian belief held by the two people in the video that the wearing of pounamu is idolatry.
Throughout the video, uploaded to Facebook by the account Ahi Wairua Tapu, the woman filming explains the taonga was gifted to the man by his…

I was looking up how to ask if someone wants something in te reo Māori and I found this awesome article:
https://www.renews.co.nz/hot-ways-to-ask-for-consent-in-te-reo-maori/
There is a CW for talk about sexual violence and prevention, but the actual sentences are about halfway down the page and some are very fun.
It’s really cool to see resources like this! I’m now going to see if there is a similar resource for NZSL, because that is also one of our national languages.

____ Day 25: hair Hair is widely used in Oceania as an essential component of certain objects. In the Marquesas Islands, it is the privileged support of mana. Here is for today another portrait of a Maori woman, whose gaze I crossed during my search for inspiration and that I could not forget.
