What if… Sirius obliviated himself? (Reg’s POV)

Regulus Black had always been forgotten. His parents had left him at home because they forgot they had a kid, even his friends would forget when he left, but he never- ever- thought Sirius would forget him.

He walked up to Sirius, a small smile on his face. They had finally fixed their relationship.

“Do I know you?” Sirius had prompted, shrugging it off.

Regulus’ smile had faded,” is that a joke?” He asked gently, please be a joke, his mind begged.

“Sorry dude, if I knew you I’m sorry. If we hooked up then I was probably drunk.” He shrugged and Regulus gagged at the reminder. Brother, his mind chanted.

“I- uh,” he hesitated,”sorry I thought you were…. Someone else.” He managed to choke out his voice incredibly small.

Sirius gave him a pitying smile and shrugged, going back to his meal as 3 people Regulus knew came in.

First was James. He looked at Regulus with the saddest look Regulus had ever seen.

Second was Peter. He watched the interaction before slowly shrinking back.

Third was Remus. He placed a hand on Regulus’ shoulder,”Regulus.” He whispered as Sirius looked at the three, confused.

“Remus.” He whispered back,”why is- Remus.” He tried to ask but the words didn’t come out.

“Sirius,” he deflected instead,”go play with James.” He talked like he was talking to a little kid, but Sirius followed like one.

“He couldn’t handle…it.” He reasoned turning back to Regulus,”he couldn’t anymore.”

“The- the memories? Or the- me?” He asked dreading the answer.

Remus sighed,”not you. Never you. He’d have nightmares, nightmares about his mom, his dad- Regulus you have to understand.”

“But he forgot me.” He whispered,”he chose to forget me.”

“Regulus,” Remus pleaded,”you-“

“I was the connection,” he realized slowly, “every memory of me was a memory of that.”

“Regulus,” he begged,”you have to understand.”

“I-I do,” he whispered because he did, in some twisted way he understood,”but I’m still allowed to hurt?” The way he said it sounded more like a question than a statement.

Remus lowered his head, staring at the floor,”Merlin, yes, Regulus. Of course you can hurt. It does hurt. It hurts everyone.”

Regulus stayed silent before saying something barely above a whisper,”I should go.”

Remus nodded and stayed still, letting Regulus go.

Regulus tried so hard not to cry as he half-ran. He needed Barty, Pandora, Evan, even Dorcas. But Barty being Barty seemed to always know when he needed him because he came barreling into a chest. He looked up to see Barty’s features before an arm wrapped around his waist and led him to their room.

“Shoot.” He sighed once they were both sitting on the bed. And regulus stayed silent but Barty’s words weren’t a command it was an invitation- one he wanted to take.

So while sniffling, mumbling, and blurring words together he explained everything. Poured his heart out to his best friend. And Barty stayed silent the whole time just letting Regulus talk. Finally regulus stopped, needing breath.

“So…” Barty prompted, “that’s shit.”

And regulus let out a small chuckle, a smile on a tear stained face, “movie?” He asked desperately needing a distraction.

Barty nodded grabbing the remote and letting Regulus cuddle into him.

Regulus still hated the fact his brother couldn’t remember him, although he was perfectly fine with distracting himself and staying in denial. And it was a little better now that Evan and Pandora had joined (he wasn’t sure when they came in).

HP Headcanons!

So like these are just some hogwarts headcanons I had in my tiny pea sized brain. 

SO I feel that if a pureblood student  would ever call a muggle-born a “Mudblood” They would pretend to lick their hand and wipe it on the pureblood’s face and say “You’ve got mud on your face, you big disgrace, kickn your can all over the place, singin’ ” and then just every muggle-born would just Stomp stomp clap singing “we will we will rock you” and the pureblood would be so confused and horrified and they would just run away lmaooooo

Also I feel like muggle-born  gen Z students would totally quote vines and memes. Like just think about it, a professor saying “Let’s get down to business,” and half the class is like “TO DEFEAT THE HUNS” and the other half is just scared of them. Also, like just think of all the vines they would quote..... Ok I got one Just imagine at breakfast “AHH” “Dude, I could have dropped my croissant!” or someone giving  an avocado to someone  “Oh, an avocado... Thanks,” 

I HAVE MORe  so I feel like they (The Muggle-borns)  would just casually ask Dumbledore what the wifi password was and he could just casually say “Draco dormien snunquam titillandus123” and the Purebloods would think it was a secret code for something. They would totally bring their Nintendo switches and Phones and all their electronics and would have to explain to everyone what those “Tablets” or devices” do and what they are. they would totally bring normal stationary, like pens, pencils, markers, Erasers, pencil pouches OMG SHARPIES and they would draw on the walls with sharpie and Flinch would never be able to get it off because its PERMANENT and would have to ask a professor to do it because he’s a squib and can’t do magic 

They would probs sell  stationery to the purebloods or halfbloods because like QUILLS THAT CAN ERASE MISTAKES?!? QUILLS THAT CAN WRITE GLITTERY THINGS?!? ERASING THINGYS THAT LOOKS LIKE ANIMALS AND FOOD?!?!? POUCHES THAT STORE YOUR QUILLS AND ERASER THINGYS!?!?! BITCH WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT!?!?!  There would be a blackmarket for this and it would be sold at a shifty ass corner like just imagne “Yo so you got the stuff?” “Yea I gotchu’ fam” “Wait how do I know you’re not a spy for the professors? What’s the secret password?” “UwU” “All right follow me”, and they would go to the Hufflepuff Common Room (Because the Hufflepuffs are chill, they aren’t snitches and also because no one would expect the Hufflepuff’s and they would expect the Slytherins because all the Slytherins are hella cunning and sly and  everyone in Hufflepuff’s too innocent and nice to be doing that, but little will they know....) and  they would exchange it like a drug deal lmfaooo It would totally become like a fad or trend and everyone would be writing essays with glitter pens and pencils and everyone would just go ham on the walls with sharpies (I kinda feel bad for the walls lmao) so then the professors would have to ban them and wouldn’t allow anyone to have one or sell any and any stationary that’s not pencil or pencil pouches would be confiscated (But then the pencils would also be confiscated too because of something lmao) and  thus is why there is now a blackmarket for them. They would do a duplication spell whenever they didn’t have a lot left so  they would always have them in stock and they would never run out!   

Btw the first two ideas were a little inspired by some posts a saw by some users here but I have no idea who they are and I tried looking for their posts but I couldn’t find it so if anyone knows what I’m talking about can you please give me the usernames so I can credit them for inspiring me to make this post, that would be greatly appreciated. :)

Would you mind helping flesh out a Portal based Quirk? I have an OC who uses one but don't want it to be like Kurogiri's.

Sure, no problem. Its just portal quirks…they well…they open portals? But no one said it had to be the same fog thingy, so here’s some other ways for teleportation.

Digitial Transport: Allows the user to convert themselves into data to transfer themselves from one electronic device to another. Like phones, tvs, and computers. The devices need to be around 3 feet apart, and this is strictly electronics. So no old telephones or radios. Its seen when the user is using the quirk, since they turn into a streak of light that glitches out as it goes in from once device and out the other. Small sparks can be seen. It is possible to transport to devices further than 3 feet, but once the quirk is active and the user is mid-teleporting, if they miss the object than they’ll land and return to normal wherever the streak hits. You’ll need good aiming practice for this one, if you try to transport to devices that are in motion

Paper Door: Option 1, The user can create doors for themselves. By tracing an object with your hand, as in making an outline that’s enough for a human to walk through, the user can peel away the surface. Example, if they did this with a wall. The outline would be a human-sized square, the shape of a door is in blue. They can then peel it away, like a thin sheet of paper, as if opening it and enter and come out on the other side. When you open something, you’d usually see a black void. With this quirk, they can place location markers for different places the quirk can reach access to. You can place the marker by tracing an outline on one side of the building, and another outline on the other. Only the user can see this, and has no affect on normal people. This way when you access your door, you won’t come out on the other side, but at the other side of the building, or at whichever location you want to that’s marked.

Option 2: Because I can’t decide, here’s a different but similar quirk. The user can turn objects into their own personal travel source. Open a fridge? Walk in, boom your somewhere else. But, you’d need a second version of that object to match in the location your teleporting to. Have some colorful wallpaper in your room? Place the same thing in the living room or kitchen and you can just walk though the wallpaper and come out where the other one is. Trying to escape? Jump headfirst into the wall at a train station and pretend your going to hogwarts the classroom wall and show up anywhere else in the building. Robbing a bank? Just crawl into the safe, and you’ll be back at your hideout, as long as you have a safe there too.

I guess you could also have some water-based portals? That can open with water ripples, so the bigger the ripples the bigger your magical portal is. Or you could teleport from a person’s shadow to another, or any shadow really. Maybe portals that are created from a kind of light refraction? I guess a pocket dimension is another, but probably doesn’t fit the bnha world. If you already have an idea for a portal quirk, feel free to share and someone can help you out with the details! I tried, and apologize if this wasn’t what you were looking for.

All Hallow’s Eve

(DISCLAIMER: We’re going way off the canon path here, kiddos.)

Orion hadn’t heard from Artemis in weeks. He wanted to be thrilled, but he knew better than to trust himself. He wondered if he’d ever be fully at ease in his own head, or how long it would be before the little worm of guilt allowed him to call the head his own. He sat on a window ledge outside the Great Hall at early morning, waiting for his friends and thinking. He found it less and less pleasant to have time to himself lately: the longer he was alone and the longer he thought, the more he found gaps in his memory, gaps only his Other Half had access to. The day before he’d needed the colors of the rainbow for a spell and found he couldn’t remember them. His classmates had a jolly laugh at his expense when Snape made him memorize a song of colors, then sing it aloud for the class.

“Oi, Orion!” Ron called, pulling the Slytherin from the sill and out of his thoughts. “We thought we’d get here before you for a change.”

“Have you been sleeping well?” Harry asked, clapping a hand on Orion’s shoulder as they strode toward the monumental double doors.

Orion pursed his lips. “I’ve been sleeping, but not resting, you know?”

“Yeah, I can relate,” Harry said with a sad smile.

Orion had learned a lot about Harry in the last weeks, specifically the three Gryffindors’ annual exploits and the possible return of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

He’s a regular King Arthur, Orion thought. A boy with a great destiny. He wished he could tell his friends about his own adventures, but even he knew raving about other dimensions and fairies with time-stop technology and demons living on the moon would result in a one-way ticket to the loony bin.

The four children walked towards the closed doors of the Hall without breaking stride and the doors swung open on their hinges without being touched: though today, they did so with an unearthly groan. Orion jumped, and his friends grinned.

“I love Halloween,” Hermione said, stretching her arms over her head.

Black candles floated in clusters above the tables in the Great Hall, their wax surprisingly not dripping on the bright orange tablecloths below. The rafters were swathed in giant, real cobwebs, and a giant jack-o-lantern loomed in the middle of the ceiling, leering at the students as they entered.

Orion grinned back, his initial skittishness forgotten. He’d never had a real Halloween. Artemis wasn’t one for the season.

The children were feasting on caramel apples, spiced oatmeal, and pumpkin milk when the ghosts came into the hall, descending through the ceiling and phasing through walls.

“Do they not have ghosts at Ilvermorny School?” Hermione asked, noticing Orion’s open fascination.

“Erm, no,” he recovered. “Haven’t been around long enough, I suppose. Do they have to die in the school to be ghosts here?”

“I sure hope not!” Ron said through a mouth full of pumpkin muffin. Hermione glared at him, and he shrugged. “If so, where do the ghosts get their mounts for the Headless Hunt? Did the horses all die with their masters?”

“Or do they have to wait around for the horses to die?” Harry cut in.

“How many headless men couldn’t be in the hunt for lack of steed?” Ron asked, pointing at Harry with a fork.

Harry laughed. “Maybe it started off as a Headless Jog.”

“The two of you, really,” Hermione chastised. “A lot of them do,” she told Orion. “Or at least, they all have a strong connection to Hogwarts.”

“And unfinished business,” Ron added, wiggling his fingers under his chin and baring his teeth.

“What’s the Headless Hunt?” Orion laughed.

“A gaggle of really old men on their high horses boasting about not having a good head on their shoulders.” Nearly Headless Nick sulked. He phased between Ron and Harry, and the chill he brought on prompted them to make room for him on the table bench. “Now me, I may not be completely headless, but at least I have a head!” He said the last part loudly, so a group of men a good deal shorter than they should be, heads tucked under their arms, could hear.

“He’s talking about Lord Valeron,” Ron whispered behind his hand. “He lost his head, literally. His head was misplaced before his burial. But he’s still able to take part in the Hunt. No one knows how.”

“I know how! It’s prejudice!” Nick bewailed. “He can’t use his head for Nogglin’ Rolling, or Cranium Volleyball! They only like him because he’s mysterious.”

“He is pretty mysterious,” Hermione said, resting her chin on her fist as she watched the only truly headless man on the outskirts of the group, fixing cufflinks he couldn’t have known had come askew.

Orion felt a stirring in his mind, a cold, familiar itch that made his stomach turn.

“It’s rumored that his head knows such terrible secrets it’s been buried separate from his body somewhere on the Hogwarts estate,” Ron said in hushed tones, “and that he searches for it still.”

“Ahh! He’s bewitched you as well!” Nick wailed. He swung an arm to bang the table, but his arm fell right through. “But I’ll have the last laugh,” he told them, leaning in conspiratorially. “Because I know where Lord Valeron’s head lies.”

Ron and Hermione made faces of awe, though it was evident they didn’t believe him, while Harry shook his head. But someone did believe the beleaguered specter.

‘Ask him if he wants his head completely removed.’

Orion started so violently that he dumped a goblet of pumpkin milk into his lap. He performed an anti-stain spell before Hermione could, but the wand shook in his hand and the spell transferred the stain to the tablecloth.

“Orion?” Hermione asked, her heavy brows furrowed.

He turned his attention to Nick on the other side of the table. “I can remove your head for you.”

“What?” Nick, Ron, and Harry said in unison.

“I can remove your head for you,” Orion said, the color returning to his cheeks, “and you can finally take part in the Headless Hunt. But in return, you tell me where Lord Valeron’s head is.”

The three Gryffindors and the ghost stared at the pale boy for a long moment.

The ghost finally spoke. “If you can get me into the Hunt,” he said slowly, “I will do whatever you want.”

“How in the seven layers of the underworld are we supposed to remove a dead man’s head?” Orion hissed, trying not to sound excited. He’d ducked into a dark gap between columns for privacy while he talked to himself.

‘Oh, you’re acknowledging me now?’ Artemis said snidely.

“You haven’t talked to me for weeks!” Orion sputtered. “But never mind that, you must have a plan if you’ve promised the poor soul his deepest wish.”

‘The simplest solution would be to exhume the body and finish the job.’ Artemis smiled at Orion’s squeamishness. ‘But as I’m doubting there’s any flesh left, that avenue is out. Thankfully, while you’ve been traipsing around wizard academy, I’ve been doing some theorizing with quantum and particle physics.’

“Yeah?” Orion asked, pretending to understand.

He could almost see Artemis’s vampiric grin, quite fitting for the holiday. ‘Yeah.’

That night, the four friends gathered under Harry’s Cloak of Invisibility and snuck into the Transfiguration classroom, chose because it was the only class with windows big enough to be lit by the full moon.

Orion had gathered supplies per Artemis’s instructions and hid them in the room before light’s out: a coil of copper wire, the interdimensional device that brought them there, the damaged tazer pen, some protection equipment, and a knife.

‘Or any sharp blade,’ Artemis had specified.

Orion had never distrusted himself more.

“What do we do now?” Hermione whispered. “We told Nick to meet us at midnight, that’s two hours away.”

“We— I need the time to set this up,” he explained. “It’s very precise, but I’ll let you know if I need help.”

The three friends gathered around a table a few meters away to play some game they’d invented with the Chocolate Frog cards. Orion wished he were playing with them.

‘Focus,’ Artemis reprimanded. ‘You have the steady hands for this job, but not the knowledge. Now listen to me very carefully—‘

It was about fifteen minutes till midnight, and the Gryffindors had long since become bored of their game and infatuated with Orion’s mysterious assignment. He’d set up a small workstation at McGonagall’s desk. Odd sparks flew in every direction as he used his wand as a welding torch to rewire something in the tech-watch he’d snuck in from home.

“Electronics don’t work here,” Hermione reminded him, her face flickering in the blue light of the flame. “That’s why your watch broke in the first place.”

“It’s a good thing I’m not trying to fix it then,” Orion said through the bandana covering his mouth.

“What are you trying to do?” Ron asked.

“Supe it up,” he replied, using tweezers to lift a tiny coil on the circuit board and bend it where he wanted it. “If my theory is correct, ghosts are a mix between the magical and the physical: real, organic beings who left an imprint on the world. I’m not the first to wonder if those who died didn’t really pass on to a higher plane, but are in fact dimension-adjacent, and the sad creatures we call ghosts are caught between our world and the beyond.” He wound two lengths of wire to the sides of the circuit board, twisted those wires together, and snipped it with the knife half a meter from the watch. “However, the human brain essentially runs on electricity, a current,” he activated the tazer pen, which he’d reworked to create a steadier charge. “It’s no coincidence that electronics go haywire when specters draw near. They’re an ectoplasmic container for the neurons that contain the brain, the spirit! So hence, my little experiment.”

He twisted the wire around the fountain pen’s split tip, then switched it on. The watch’s display screen flickered, then lit up and beeped a digital greeting.

“Voila,” he said, folding his arms over his chest.

“You just fixed a watch,” Harry said, raising an eyebrow.

“You sounded just like Arthur,” Hermione added, her eyes wide and admiring.

“I’ve done more than fix it,” Orion said, coughing once into his fist. He took up the knife, a switchblade he’d knicked from one of the other Slytherin boys. He wrapped the watch’s band around the knife and tapped a few buttons on its interface.

“Are you ready for me?” Nearly Headless Nick phased through a window, the moonlight refracting through his hair and ruffled collar.

“Are you ready to be headless?” Ron asked as the ghost descended to their level.

“I’ve been ready for one hundred seventeen years,” Nick said. He rubbed his hands together. “So what do I do?”

“Come closer,” Orion pressed a final button on the watch and leaned over it, his palms planted on the desktop. “And trust me.”

A red web emanated from the watch, causing the three other humans to jump back. The laser lattice scanned Nick, then whirred as the frankensteined contraption hummed and vibrated so hard the knife rattled on the table.

“Is it supposed to be doing that?” Hermione whispered, eyeing the door warily. The machine was making quite a racket now.

“Someone’s going to hear!” Agreed Harry.

As he said this, the Hogwarts clocktower began to ring, the bells’ resonance drowning out the droning of the machine.

“Look!” Hermione said, pointing at the experiment. The base of the hilt glowed blue. The blue virus spread up the knife, and when it encased the tip of the blade, Orion turned off the tazer and cut the power to the watch. 

“Wizard,” Ron said.

Orion touched the hilt with a finger experimentally, and when it didn’t hurt him, he slipped it from the watch band and held it aloft. It was still opaque, but had the eery aura of the haunting dead.

“An entrancing display,” Nick said, “but how’s that—“

With a quick, practiced strike, Orion slid the knife through the preexisting cut bisecting his throat, exerting a bit more pressure when he felt the resistance of skin.

All four students and the ghost watched in awe as his head tipped comically to one side, then fell to the floor.

Hello everyone! I’m so thankful I was born in the right decade to share my journey online. The fitblr community is a wonderful place filled with wonderful people. 43. When and where do you feel most at peace? We have a fairly big yard. In summer I love to go to our poolhouse and have breakfast whilst seeing the sun reflect on the pool, chickens running around and my dogs playing.

51. Are you vegan/vegetarian? I’m a vegan/vegetarian/pescotarian. Basically I try to aim for vegan BUT! I live in the middle of nowhere and most restaurants don’t even have a vegetarian option. I adapt but I always try to go for vegan. I did not eat meat for the last 11 years and maybe 5x fish? 

52. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? A vet by day, superstar by night. My parents tried very hard to explain it didn’t work like that.

Can we all just stop scrolling for a moment to think about how underappreciated film score composers are! Without the music that they compose/write, movies would not have the impact they have on our hearts!  

Lets analyze this shall we? Let’s start with ones everyone knows, and get more obscure as we go!

 -Star Wars IV: The Hologram/Binary Sunset (John Williams) - This piece of music is heard when Luke Skywalker looks up at the setting twin suns of Tatooine.  Can you imagine Luke just standing there without any music; it wouldn’t be impactful with the feeling of loss of him being an orphaned child living with his aunt and uncle, all the while he wants to go and be his own person but he is stuck on this desert planet.  The harsh strings really prove to you that Luke Skywalker is growing up and becoming his own person, followed by the mellow flutes that allow you to understand that he is still a kid as well.  Without the music none of these feelings would have been conveyed!

 -Titanic: Hymn to the Sea/My Heart Will Go On (James Horner) – Before I start on this, no Celine Dion did NOT write My Heart Will Go On, James Horner did.  Anyway back to the point.  This movie is one of romance and tragedy, almost none of which would be conveyed without the ominous and melodious soundtrack.  The dark feeling that comes with the vocals and bagpipes in Hymn to the Sea help you to feel and envision just how much pain Rose is going through at the loss of her newfound lover and her future as she has to go back to her fiancé.  Not to mention the much more cheerful strings and vocals that help you to see just how proud everyone was of the ‘unsinkable’ ship.  Much like with Star Wars, without the music you wouldn’t be able to feel as emotionally connected to the characters without the score.

 -Star Trek 2009: Enterprising Young Men (Michael Giacchino) – Another one of my personal favorites, this particular piece isn’t as slow, mellow and melodic as the other scores I have referenced, this one is much more upbeat and full of action, contrasting even to some of the pieces in the same movie in a beautiful way.  As the stings in the beginning rise, there is a feeling that something big is coming and it is going to affect the U.S.S. Enterprise and her crew. Quickly the track leads into its crescendo with the bass drums and horns giving you a sense of satisfaction as they manage to beat the situation that has threatened them through so much of the movie.  The scene where the Enterprise comes in and fires on Nero’s ship to save Spock would be nowhere near as climactic if the music weren’t there to accompany the strong feelings of the film.  (I didn’t even mention the soft and depressing track during the destruction of the U.S.S. Kelvin)

 -The Hunger Games: The Train/Rue’s Farewell (James Newton Howard) – The strings with a dark undertone of drums and bass in the piece The Train, allow for the feeling of despair and loss when Katniss and Peeta leave District 12, most likely forever. The brokenness they both feel as they come to realize they will probably never see their loved ones again, and for Peeta the thought of killing the girl he has always loved.  In some ways this differs from the piece Rue’s Farwell, but in some ways they are very similar.  Rue’s Farewell starts very mellow as if Katniss is in shock, unwilling to believe that the little girl who reminded her so much of Prim is dead/dying.  As the guitar comes in, you know Katniss is beginning to accept the death of her friend and gathers flowers.  As the crescendo builds, with the bass becoming deeper, the strings/orchestral track becoming more layered and emotion filled, Katniss stands and uses the three-fingers salute in defiance of the Capitol, causing an uprising in District 11 with the spark of hope she provides.  This is one of my favorite pieces of film score with the emotion it holds.  Now imagine Rue’s death without the music to accompany it, you wouldn’t feel as much of a sense of loss for the young girl. You wouldn’t be able to understand the pain that is being brought upon Katniss by the Capitol, it just wouldn’t be the same scene without the music.

 -Mulan: Short Hair/Mulan’s Decision (Jerry Goldsmith) – You wouldn’t expect a Disney movie about a 16 year-old Chinese girl who pretends to be a man to save her elderly father from having to go to war against the Huns would have the same composer as the original Star Trek.  That is the beauty of film score composers; they can make music to fit almost any genre of movies!  

When Mulan goes into the room where her father keeps all of his gear for war the strings are mellow with some classic Chinese instruments, allowing you to feel the how Mulan thinks this is the only way she can really serve her family after she has practically destroyed their honor.  Then as the electronic synthesizers kick in, you begin to understand the determination the girl feels for her family and country as she cuts away her hair and becomes someone new.  The horns that come in later in the song add another layer of feeling to the music as she leaves the note for her father, making it final that she is going to leave to save his life and the lives of the Chinese people from the Huns.

 -The Little Mermaid: Main Title/Happy Ending (Alan Menken) – I cannot thank the film score community without mentioning the ever phenomenal Alan Menken.  (I have been blessed to be able to see this man perform live.)  He has written the soundtracks of our childhood as he has written the music for Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tangled, and of course The Little Mermaid.

The piece starts off with chimes and flutes, allotting for the feeling of just how young Ariel is. The whimsical feel becomes even more intense as the vocals come in, showing you just how much of an imagination the girl has as she dreams of joining humans on the surface, with all of their strange inventions.  As the piece arrives at the crescendo, cymbals create the feeling of pure joy as Ariel marries the prince but as it slowly goes back into the strings and chimes from the beginning, there is a layer of sorrow as she leaves her father and her family behind to become fully human.  Without the music the final scene would be no more than a simple wedding with little feeling other than that of a newly married couple.

 -The Polar Express: Main Title (Alan Silvestri) – This Christmas film based off the children’s book has both an up lifting and ominous score. The soft vocals, strings, and piano in the beginning offer a feeling of uncertainty as a young boy tries to justify the existence of Santa Clause, despite there being no proof that he is real. As the bells and strings pick up you can understand the feeling of joy as he sees the train that is The Polar Express, the final evidence he needs to prove to himself that Santa isn’t just some made up children’s story.  The music manages to capture the fanciful feeling of a child while still maintaining the composure of a well respected Christmas film.

 -Interstellar: Quantifiable Connection (Hans Zimmer) – No composer differs more from the famous John Williams than Hans Zimmer. The fast paced piano and strings make you understand just how fleeting time can be to someone else even when it feels as if it is creeping by for you.  The rising tones help you to understand just how much the love that Cooper has for his daughter Murph manages to keep them connected, even when Coop is stuck inside a singularity.  He manages to find a way to contact his daughter and save the humans still living on Earth, and the tones in this particularly upbeat part of the soundtrack allow you to feel more than just a father’s pain from being separated from his children, but the joy he feels in knowing that he is able to save their lives and the lives of his race who would die otherwise.

 -Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire: Hogwart’s Hymn (Patrick Doyle) – Not only do the horns and strings give a sense of nostalgia to any true Harry Potter fan, but they manage to make the school itself feel like a living, breathing being.  (Some might even argue that it is…Room of Requirement)  This piece helps you to understand how Harry and his friends feel in the winter, leading up to the Yule Ball, not only trying to keep up with their studies but trying to partake in the festivities of the Triwizard Tournament, all the while the threat of Lord Voldemort hangs over their heads.  Still this piece manages to bring all of those emotions to light while still adding a prideful sense of serenity to the school.

 -Jurassic Park: Main Theme (John Williams) – The piano at the beginning of this piece helps you to understand the beauty and magnificence that the park is trying to create and show to the world.  As the strings come in to match the piano a magical feel is added to the movie as dinosaurs and humans walk the planet together for the first time.  At the crescendo when the bells and horns are added into the breathtaking composition you understand not only how amazing these creatures are but just how little control humans have over them, and the immense power they possess.  Next time you watch Jurassic Park imagine the scene where Alan Grant sees the dinosaurs for the first time without the music, I can guarantee you will want to go back and watch it again with the music, because it isn’t the same without it.

 -Jurassic World: As The Jurassic World Turns (Michael Giacchino) – The horns in the beginning offer an ominous feel to the movie as you know something will inevitably go wrong with the park.  Still the piece picks up using cymbals and trumpets to signify the vastness and magnificence of the park that has finally been opened to the public. The stings that come in as the track progresses gives you a feeling of insignificance in comparison to the science used to bring the majestic animals back to life.

 -The Rocketeer: Main Title (James Horner) – This is probably the least known movie on my list, but it holds the top spot in my heart. The piano in the beginning is just astounding, and as it leads into the strings that follow, you almost feel as if you are flying through the air.  The drops of bass horns allow for the feeling of darkness that you would definitely have if you were being chased by the Nazis because you had a jetpack that they were developing.  Still the light strings manage to give you a sense of suspense that is only intensified by the drums and horns that come in towards the middle of the piece.  As the track reaches its crescendo and goes back to the same rift of strings and chimes from the beginning, you have a wonderful sense of relief of escaping with your life.

 So my whole point of this post is to make sure that film score composers get the credit they deserve. They make all these astonishing compositions that can make you cry one moment and laugh the next and yet they almost never get recognized for their superb works!  So next time you watch a movie whether you’ve seen it before or not, I encourage you to listen to the music as well as the dialogue and find out who wrote it.  You never know, you might find that you like symphonic music more than you ever expected you would.
