Unrevised Emu Scene: Chapter 9

July 20, 2023 — I rewrote the EmuKasa scene in Chapter 9 of my timeline fic to realign the scene now that I’ve fleshed out the last arc. Starts from "She turns to see Tsukasa grasping onto her, a different light in his unblinking eyes."

The original is below the cut.

“Emu. I shouldn’t have made you spend so much time here in Phoenix Wonderland, I’m sorry,” he says, out of nowhere. “I know— I know it must be hard to see your grandfather’s park ruined like this and  you don’t have to keep doing shows here if it hurts you.”

It’s such a random change of mood, but Emu doesn’t really have the wherewithal to question it because Tsukasa is holding her hand and looking at her super serious, like he’s saying something very important to his heart and he actually truly would accept it if she upped and quit the troupe right now. 

But why would she do that?

“Tsukasa, I’m not leaving you. I think it’s helped me to spend time here again.”

“Wha-What?” His brows scrunch in confusion.

She tilts her head at him. 

How curious. 

Emu’s long moved past wondering how Tsukasa knows the things he knows and has simply accepted that he does know things. Like the park changes. About her grandpa.

And yet he’s wrong about this. 

“I… do miss how my family’s park used to be. I miss a lot of things,” she needs to explain, “But…”

… it’s gone. 

… it doesn’t matter. 

… it’s not a disaster.

“...I want to be able to face that.”

“You don’t have to put yourself in that position though. If it hurts, step away,” Tsukasa says, still not understanding. 

Emu shakes her head. “I don’t want to run away anymore. Making people smile is the most important thing, and I don’t want to give up on that dream. I want everyone to have a place where they can smile forever and ever.”

“But here? Here???”

“Yes, here,” Emu laughs. “Did you see how many happy smiles we made yesterday? People made new happy memories right in front of our eyes! Phoenix Wonderland may be different but it’s still part of me, and I want it to stay part of me and my dreams because, well — that’s how I heal the hurt.”

(Loving something means grieving its loss, but living means going on to love again.)

Tsukasa’s grip on her loosens, and he pulls away. Emu sighs subtly at the loss of contact. 

“I… didn’t realize you’d feel like that.”

To be honest, Emu hadn’t realized that either. 

People have always told her she’s a very simple person so she’s not sure what to think when her feelings grow complicated. 

She wants to give up but she refuses to stop. She aches for the past yet she wanders forward. She’s been burned to the ground and somehow, new flowers have grown…

Even with her whole world changing around her, Emu’s heart hasn’t changed at its core, and she’s… beginning to figure out… what that means for her. 

What’s that saying? ‘Rise like a phoenix from the ashes’?

“It’s not as easy as feeling okay again,” Emu admits. “Not everyone comes here like before” —(but I can still bring them smiles where we can find them)— “and I still worry that the new smiles being made here won’t be protected” —(like all the ones that were discarded before) — “and I don’t want to be selfish forcing things to stay the same forever” —(as much as they may mean to me)— “...but none of that means I won’t keep trying.”

Emu beams at him. “Thanks to you, Tsukasa, I feel like I can be part of helping those smiles again. In some way!”

She already has a lot of ideas actually. Thoughts about the stages, how they promote shows, and especially for their troupe ~

Ah, but now’s not the time to overwhelm their leader with all of that. 

Emu asks Tsukasa if that made sense, and it takes him a second but he nods, quietly. 

He seems to want to tell her something more, but then decides against it. 

It’s okay though. She’ll wait.

She can’t understand many of the looks Tsukasa gives her, but she’s learned to decipher this one he’s currently wearing. 

“Do you want a hug?” she asks, already opening her arms. 

He envelopes her in an instant, and she thinks about how Tsukasa gives really great hugs. He smells like cyclamen flowers and vanilla patchouli.

I Heart History

Dearest Richard, 

The anticipated letter arrives from Jeffries. Having been written on July 9, 1945. Before I open it with you, I need to halt for a moment. Pulling in the details I now know. Imagining how this part of the story may have unfolded. Stepping back in time.

Jeffries had arrived in Boston from Europe on June 31, 1945. He was there for 20 hours and next on to Fort Dix for a six day furlough. Then the finale of this extensive never ending trail to Philadelphia, he was home at last. Writing this ten days later. Whoosh. Just need to breathe in that reality. I am guessing he chatted with you about his hometown a lot. So much so that maybe you could even have envisioned it in your mind’s eye. Finding home often has so much more significance the further we find ourselves from it. 

Here is where Jeffries would have been tip tap, typing this letter at 416 W. Harlan St. Seeing him sitting at a table in this two bedroom, one bath row house. He had spoken to four families by phone and had an idea of what folks wanted to know. 

Again thinking about how this letter, as in your Killed in Action (KIA) letter grandpa received could have been interspersed with plain old every day mail. Ads and bills all vying for space in the mailbox not being aware of the most essential envelope that might be in the mix. Mail can often be simple and common place. Delivered to your doorstep six days a week and then something arrives that asks for that moment to be halted. Freeze framed before going any further. 

This one was opened on the side with a letter opener. The envelope may have been breath blown open more before the two typed stationery pages would have been extracted. I don’t know how many times it would have been read. Trying to absorb what the details meant. Maybe only reading so far before stopping or hesitating. Sharing it with your beloved sister or whom ever else may have been around. Or your dad may have simply read it on his own. Maybe getting his glasses or sitting down in a familiar chair in the living room or at the kitchen table where the light was brighter. I don’t know and I realize I can’t imagine the emotions he felt. Another time where words are insufficient and how anything else present would have seemed inconsequential. The windows being open on a hot July day. The Nicollet traffic rumbling by or a neighbor mowing their lawn next door. The birds chirping in the treetops. Or it may be that nothing else was heard or could be heard. The moment getting stuck in place. That is what I imagine might have occurred on that possibly steamy hot day in July. 

Not quite ready to release this letter to you. Appreciating your ever present patience.

Sci-Fi Story

I’ve always desired the best for my grandsons. Therefore, I tried to give my best to grant them the greatest of opportunities. However, this didn’t happen.

The year is 2070, I’m 64 years old, and unfortunately, humans have made Earth an unhabitable place. All that could have gone wrong, did, and now we are living in an apocalyptic scenario in which wastes and pollution have filled up our communities. Indeed, my city, Guayaquil, is not the exception. People are dying due to the pollution in the air, and our river has dried up. All the good things I had desired for my grandsons, Edward and Emma, are now not possible due to living in the middle of these catastrophic events.

- Grandchildren, I promise I will do everything to give you a better future. – I said.

- You promise, Grandpa? – He asked me.

- I promise…

I wasn´t sure how I was going to do it but I couldn´t let them down.

One day, I decided to go out for a walk by the river because I knew that it would clear up my mind and give me more ideas about how to solve this problem. Still, no change in our present served as a solution. I needed to travel to the past! But, how could we achieve that?

Miraculously, at that same time, a kind of portal popped up in the water. Initially, I hesitated to go through the portal, but I had a good feeling about it.

Thus, without thinking twice, I jumped into the portal. Instantly, I found myself in the same river, but full of water. I must have gone back in time when humanity still had water. I needed to do something to make society notice how important saving water is. Consequently, I started to work very hard, going to schools, universities, and offices to promote my time-traveling saving water campaign. I show people from the past, images of how dry our world is in 2070. My main goal was to raise awareness about water saving importance to change my present. I worked on the campaign for about 6 months. After that, I went back to my present and I received great news. My grandchildren told me that now Guayaquil is full of water to consume, and my campaign has solved water scarcity! Now my grandchildren were going to have the future they deserved.

Would it intimidate you if your crush was smarter than you? Intimidate is probably not the right word for it, but what they’re intelligent about can be likely to affect my attraction, I guess? There are things I would personally get bored by, like philosophy or working out lol. It’d also be another thing altogether if the person was being a show-off about their intelligence because then it’d just piss me off haha.

I always jump immediately to worst-case scenarios because I find that lowering your expectations really saves your sanity and mental health in the long run, lol. Anyway, there’s definitely been many cases where I immediately assumed the worst, and the worst did happen – most notable of which would be the news of my grandpa passing away. It only took seeing my mom’s car parked at home in the afternoon to get that hunch.

If you could go back 8 months and change something, would you? That’s around October 2022, right? Eh, not really. Part of me wishes I pushed through with my resignation, but then again it led to my promotion at the start of 2023 so I can’t really defend that thought too much.

However, the most significant proponents of occupational therapy come from backgrounds that distinguish them from the majority of individuals in the world and even from the majority of people within their own minority. Typically, these backgrounds included being well-educated, urban middle-class, middle-aged, able-bodied, and white Anglophones. The majority of theories originate from the western industrial population, which only accounts for 12% of the world's population (Hammel, 2018).

This has resulted in models and theories that were unresponsive to multiple viewpoints, culture, and values; people's distinct priorities and values were not explored while forming the foundation of the practice, which is concerned with human occupation, therefore should be formed by humans lived experiences. This has resulted in theories and models that are not universally appropriate and relevant for all. For example, a grandpa with a spinal cord injury in the Durban township of Cato Manor may not value independence in ADLs and would rather conserve the energy and time for his cherished/valued occupations. This discussion has led me to consider the injustices that must be addressed in order for a way forward and the future of the profession. The occupation lacks diversity. According to Hammel, 2020, occupation is a health determinant, so the future of occupational therapy is one that is inclusive and diverse, in order to deliver quality occupational therapy services that are fair and beneficial to all.

As a final-year occupational therapy student who works with a diverse population in the Cato Manor community and is aware that our profession's foundation is mostly Western-based, I have gained an understanding and appreciation for the importance of keeping those factors in mind while working within the Cato Manor community. As I would be using Western-based frameworks and models, it is critical that I evaluate the impact of their culture, social history and background, and political history such as apartheid, so that I plan and offer service that is culturally relevant, fair and appropriate.

Some of the injustices include racism, patriarchy, and cultural classism (Kronenberg, 2022), which subjected people to dehumanizing conditions, and moving forward in the profession, these are some of the injustices that need to be addressed.

According to Kronenberg (2022) the profession is Western-dominated, monoculturally shaped, and being imposed to the diverse population, and the effects of this include what I saw in the community of Cato Manor, whereby an elderly lady was being trained in ADLs, specifically dressing, which she saw no value in and would have preferred to participate in a religious group session, which would have enhanced her quality of life.

According to the World Federation of Occupational Therapy, occupational therapists enable the right to participate in meaningful, purposeful occupation, regardless of medical condition, social stigma, or discrimination (WFOT, 2019). It is crucial to note that WFOT does not only identify our contribution as the facilitation of independence of human function, but also as the facilitation of the right to occupational participation.​

Moving forward, we need to have more inclusive theoretical models, culturally appropriate approaches, clear emphasis on occupational rights, and explore and be more aware of structural constraints that impede clients' occupational engagement. Move to a universally inclusive approach.

726: Santa's Holiday Book Suggestions

It is the holiday gift giving season and Santa has three suggestions for every parent, grand parent, aunt, uncle or for that matter, for anyone having a young person in their lives. Santa chats with three authors about their books that are directed at children. Amy Kimlat (yes, the wife of Kostya Kimlat) tells us about her recently released book, “Hocus Pocus Practice Focus” which is a wonderful book (for readers 4-8) that will empower and inspire children to focus and do their best in life. More than a book about a child who learns magic, but the “magic” that is behind learning.
