hmm how do I put this. all media is inherently problematic in some way because the world is what it is and has the history that it has and every societal norm, belief and value pertaining to the past eras of the film industry—and even music and art and writing—will forever reflect in the products and as unfortunate as it is to have the history we do, we fundamentally cannot change that. there is no such thing as unproblematic media and there probably never will be and that’s okay and it doesn’t make you a bad person for enjoying media that might have some problematic or outdated elements, bc again, pretty much everything that we as a society created is going to have some problems.

sometimes media is problematic on purpose, like the entirety of TKAM, but with the intent on addressing the real life problems it reflects within the narrative. same goes for horror films or gore films. like, shockingly you don’t condone murder by watching or enjoying slashers. the point of the entire horror genre is to be scary and disgusting; the point of slasher villains is to be evil and wrong. but at the same time, sometimes you have to take a step back and wonder why a specific person or concept in a horror movie is being depicted as scary and disgusting and wrong and evil, like amputees or mentally ill people and queer people, and see how that reflects the real world—which is basically what the entire point of media literacy and critical thinking and purity culture is.

media literacy and critical thinking and purity culture don’t mean you have to avoid engaging with or enjoying problematic media at all costs. it doesn’t mean completely removing problematic elements from preexisting media and erasing the topics it might address— in fact, both of those things actively dull your critical thinking skills in general—and it especially doesn’t mean you’re suddenly justified in engaging with genuinely morally abhorrent content like lolicon or bestiality (both of which are examples of things typically portrayed in media as gross and wrong, and rightfully so). as much as anyone wants to pretend otherwise, fiction and reality go hand in hand as reflections of one another; reflections of society over time, of a person’s own experiences, etc, and to say that they don’t or that one doesn’t affect the other is quite literally the opposite of media literacy. lastly, to say media literacy or critical thinking aren’t important skills to have or that media should just stop depicting problematic things like violence or death is very very painfully wrong, as again, fiction and reality go hand in hand, and understanding a fictionalized version of reality serves us to better understand our actual reality.

Ugh... Just found out one of my fave self shipping imagines blog is aggressively anti and now I'm just kinda down in the dumps about it... I'm starting to realize that it seems like 90% of the fucking community is any more and it literally hurts to see posts like the ones they make that I relate to on a real fundamental level just to see something like "proshitters touch this and die" on the bottom, just like 'Wow... The Morality of Fandom Activities

This might as well be an essay, so apologies for my long asf post. Just a few heads up: this is in no way talking about people who support incest irl and MAPS. Those are extreme cases that I'm not qualified myself to talk about, I only know that I don't want them on my page 😭

I stopped having a very active social media presence when I was finishing high school. For me, this was a huge deal, because as the token weird queer kid all my life, Tumblr and fandom culture provided a safe space for self-expression, developing my writing skills and exploring myself. Fandoms usually play a huge role for teens, since their interactions and their experiences shape their mindsets into the primary form their adult brain takes. Whenever I look at my old posts, I can see the points where I was maturing, I could see my opinions change very clearly without always connecting old posts to significant life events.

What is very important to take into account is that I was in ALL the "red flag" fandoms, even some niche ones. BNHA, Homestuck, RWBY, Okegom, Voltron, you name it. I was into it, I had Instagram edits of it saved on my phone. As a result, I am familiar with all kinds of fujoshi, yuri bros, proshippers, etc. I'm not here to inform you about my entire digital footprint though. I'm here to discuss fandom morality. Fair warning, I will be referring to a bunch of dark themes vaguely.

I want to start by saying I understand the appeal of a toxic ship. A ship that is straight-up problematic given the context of the story. Be it because the characters are abusive to each other, a very big age gap or them being blood relatives - I get it, even if I'm one of the people who's easily repelled by this shit. I get why Junjou Romantica, for example, became so popular. The big body proportions, the "forbidden romance" trope, the guilty pleasure, I get it. I understand how nerdy young women would fawn over yaoi because they craved a soft male touch. I understand the south park proshippers because they inserted their younger selves into the characters and imagined scenarios where their own fucked-up childhoods would make sense.

My experience with Funamusea helped me understand that things that are taboo can be appealing in a fictional form. There were a lot of issues because the horror used in Funa's games was centered around sexual battery and assault. To me, that made perfect sense. Funa games are packed to the brim with gore, war, mental abuse, and disturbing characters. Of course, there would be SA in such a fucked up setting. Rape is a horrifying thing that no one should face because it is a subcategory of violence. VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING NO ONE SHOULD EVER COME ACROSS. Therefore, why is it that people who write stories containing this trope receive so much hate, but 1940s war aus for example get praised? Why is FMA a pacifist masterpiece and not torture porn?

For "glorifying" real-life horrors? Triggering people? Let's broaden this.

Think of your favorite slasher film. Your favorite best-seller horror book. Do you think that the people behind these stories are freaks and murderers? Psychopaths are capable of fitting in anywhere they want, even fucking churches. So it is useless to assume creators are moral instigators for their VILLAINS. Now let's think about Colleen Hoover and Sara J Maas (or as I like to call her, Sara J Ass). Their "love" stories are super popular because of the immense marketing that they have received, despite profiting off romanticized harmful content. Backlash is still minimized in contrast to anime niche, because they are backed by million-dollar industries and the fact that they conform to the norms of a straight story. Although that, is a topic for another discussion - how problematic characteristics are "musts" in irl relationships.

Lastly, I want to talk about the so-called community saviors who want to protect these platforms. Those who want to build a safe environment so that no predators infiltrate our sacred grounds where we discuss Persona 5 ABO dynamics. A lot of them are oftentimes victims of this sort of abuse. I myself have come across groomers. But tbh 15yo kids who reblog Shiro X Keith are not really the enemy? Anyway, that's a little besides the point. I want to directly talk to these people right now, hear me out: you are hypocrites. You only pretend to care about Tumblr communities but do not hesitate to accuse someone of abuse (any kind) and tell them to end their life. How are you protecting anyone like this? How are you a positive role model for the children partaking in fandom activities when you show clearly that you wish death upon someone. VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING NO ONE SHOULD EVER COME ACROSS, I re-iterate and you possibly agree, but YOU ARE STILL VIOLENT, and justify it by being "virtuous". How are you any different from @\hivliving? Her actions will forever be engraved in her victims' heads, even if she was humiliated in the end. Then again, it would have been better for her to write a shitty low-quality fic about Hamilton having HIV or whatever the fuck, if looking up basic things about HIV was so difficult. After 7 years in & out of fandoms, there's one thing I'm fine with, and that's bad fics.

Ultimately there is so much more I want to say. I might cover this topic on my bestie and I's podcast sometime (soz it's in Greek). The bottom line here though is not about keeping a neutral stance on problematic media. It is to enjoy whatever the fuck you want just because it makes you happy. It is to differentiate what's a wolf in sheep's clothing from what's a sheep. It is to accept that kids will ALWAYS lie about their age to access all sorts of NSFW. God knows I did so. It is to recognize them and realize that their creators and fans are most likely not going to act out every bad thing that occurs in said story. Because if that were the case, with the rise of all the Yeagerists, we'd have so many bitchless college students trying to start little rumblings of their own, and the world would be a much funnier place.

Okay so I also really really reallyyy don’t like proshippers, I am hypersexual, and I have zero access to any sort of help atp in my life. Now that I have those things out of the way right now, I am essentially in a dilemma a lot like that post. One major problem, it’s not me JUST wanting to project, it’s me wanting to BE in that spot of the victim again for some reason. And I mean like srsly getting assaulted again and all that horrible stuff. Like, i THINK these ideas, thoughts, and urges I have are called “intrusive thoughts”?? But I’m not sure. I’m disturbed by them regardless.

This has been so frustrating to deal with bc first of all, I’m not a victim to gr//ming, second, yes, I am a victim of csa at a young age, and third, I find myself having some sort of YEARNING to be hurt in such a way. (Not cocsacsa, just to not let things get mixed up btw) I have looked around on the internet for so long about this issue and I find NOTHING on it, like, am I just going crazy? Am I trying to cope with it in the worst way possible? Like, I genuinely don’t know, and it drives me mad because on one hand, I have this massive theory that it’s a mental attempt of “self- h//rm”, and then on the other hand, it’s a bizarre extreme version of yearning for touch and affection, but I’m just so unsure because I can’t find any other personal accounts of anyone else!

I acknowledge that your post wasn’t about this oddly specifc scenario, and I’m so sorry that this is so out of pocket, and possibly even counterproductive (idk) but as another csa victim, would you be able to offer some sort of insight? If the person you're responding/talking about (in your original post) didn't communicate that they are a minor in any way, you shouldn't be blamed for saying one very mild unserious sexual thing. Especially if this person was interacting/behaving in a sexual context (like posting in adult nasfw tags) first. Especially especially if you posted your response with nsfw tags as well. Also, you didn't speak to them directly. You made a very obvious joke in your own post that didn't have any connection to them or their blog. Minors cannot force their way into adult spaces and then have everyone start to complain that the adults are talking like adults. That's insane. The screenshots don't have that persons un or pfp. You weren't sending them dms telling them to their face that they should fuck you. Kids and teenagers say way worse and more sexual things than "block me harder daddy" on a daily basis. People getting mad at you about this are just virtue signaling.

I don't think they are inherently virtue signaling. It genuinely can be an uncomfortable topic/situation for some. And both anons approached the topic in a genuine and sincere way. So I don't fault them. But should someone else now try to convince a stranger on the internet to feel the same discomfort and disgust in their own actions, they sure can try, but shouldn't be surprised if the stranger chooses not to backpedal. And if they don't like that. Get mad and tell your friends about me behind my back, and block me. But it's not worth continuing the conversation against someone who made it clear they won't change their mind.

But yeah, I genuinely think it's more harmful to coddle teens from learning to handle uncomfortable situations or sexual humor. It's infantilizing and dehumanizing. I remember being a minor, a few months from turning 18 and having people who weren't even 19 yet feel too uncomfortable making a slightly sexual joke in my presence. And because of people like that, I knew people my age at that time frame who were way too prudish with discussing anything sexual at all.

And it's like, first of all, being called smelly as an insult is genuinely funny. But it's just so ironic, because unlike the first two anons, this one absolutely isn't trying to have a genuine conversation here. In fact, seeing as it's an ask, and the language used, I was meant to see it and I was meant to be intimidated, not informed. Sexual harassment is not okay, whether it is is not the conversation being had. But since harassment is a social construct, the debate is whether what I said constitutes harassment. I wish that people could like. Critique things normally without an all or nothing mentality. I was nodding along to your post about Despair, and like *yeah* having the only fat woman of note in a series literally be called Despair *does* have gross implications! But people often have to like... take it as you (general) saying the series is bad (with the implication that they're bad for enjoying) or the thing people do when they assume that because someone is a proshipper, or pro fiction, etc that means that person isn't allowed to have criticism of a piece? Like someone can talk about the flaws, biases, and bigotry in a piece without completely shunning the material.

I saw someone go "Oh what so you want Despair, a character meant to have negative connotations, wear a wedding dress?" And like. Yes! That would be great, actually, especially if the wedding dress was dirty, torn, or covered in blood. A wedding gone wrong, a bride whose best day of her life destroyed. *That's* Despair. Even if the dress was fine, how many people have gotten married because it was forced, because of the pressure and expectations of marriage being a "next step" of life? Signing away your life to a fate you don't want fits as well.

And the thing is, parts of the series were changed to make it better in modern day. Like the gay roommate was supposed to be murdered, but the gay serial killer implication was undesirable so it was changed. They could have very well changed Despair's design, yet they didn't, and that reflects on the biases of those who helped make the adaptation

And like, I said repeteadly that I LIKE the show, I like many of the choices they made and ultimately I do like the look of Despair. Just the way she’s dressed I can see a depressed milenial who doom scrolls until 5 in the morning, lives only on coffee and haven’t come out of their house in the last year. Even the fact she is wearing crocs is such a nice touch, it’s a subtle but very smart way to modernize her concept! The actrees herself is an obvious cutie and a big fucking step up over the orc like mess that was originally. My issue was purely on... why do we have to associate despair with fatness? What is there about fatness that IMMEDIATELY makes us think it can’t be dissociated with Despair? Like I can see someone being “yeah, okay, she looks unwashed and don’t caring about looking good so OBVIOUSLY she wouldn’t care about losing weight or eating healthy either” when like, that is now how or why a lot of people are fat at all! A lot of people who stopped giving a fuck are not fat and people who are fat might give all the fucks anyone can give. That is a false impression and frankly, an actually harmful one that only perpetuates even more fatphobia as being associated with the idea of “oh, if only they worked out/eat right/stopped being a lazy slug they would be fine so if they aren’t doing that it must be because they just want to be lazy slugs.” Like, I am sorry, but if me saying that, despite the many other positive things I have said about the show, the other characters and the changes from comic to show, then I don’t have any choice to believe that you think this is all natural and fine, that of course people associate Despair with fatness because all fat people SHOULD despair over the fact that they are not thin. Me or anyone saying that fat people deserve better and positive representation is not a slight against the show or anything, but a simple matter of fact.
