Better jobs for Steve than being a cop: teacher, counselor, bartender, florist, librarian assistant, garden section associate, dog walker (dog groomer canon?), grocery store manager, food pantry helper, seasonal worker as a Santa’s elf….

Thinking about the Chevalier interlude, specifically the inaugural team of Wards. Like in universe, they sell it to this first group of kids (and presumably the rest of the world) as a place for second chances, to find friends and mentors who understand what youre going through, where you can learn to use your powers safely while making good memories. The kids broadly seem to believe in these noble intentions of course, but what really gets me is that I've seen readers buy into it!
"Oh, it's such a tragedy that the Wards program became this awful thing that traumatizes kids even more, and expects them to die for the sake of civilians! It's fallen so short of what it was originally supposed to be!"
No it has not??? The fact that the triumvirate and Hero are saying it has this noble goal doesn't make it true. The Wards was pretty clearly always a way to increase the amount of bodies the prt could throw at threats, and we know this because it was started by the fucking Triumvirate as a part of the Protectorate! Alexandria literally came up with the idea of the Protectorate to legitimize the power of capes, and have a consistent source of heroes Cauldron could throw at problems. That is the whole reason for the PRT/Protectorate existing. So when we have this group of children brought in a subsidiary, there are 2 real options.
1). Cauldron and Alexandria decided they would be really niceys and created this program with no intentions other than helping these kids out.
Or 2). As things got worse, they realized the Protectorate didn't have enough manpower to do what they needed, and so they expanded it to include children (the demographic most prone to triggering). That way, they greatly increase the number of capes who they can send to fight and die as needed, and the ones who do survive their tenure in the Wards will be better trained when it comes time to join the actual Protectorate.
At the risk of sounding conceited, I think the second one is far more likely based on everything we know about Cauldron. Maybe it was originally a little nobler, and the goal was just to create more well trained heroes and cut back on young villains, but there's no way Alexandria, Doc Mom, and Contessa didn't factor in the ability to sacrifice the kid heroes if it improved their chances of success. That was absolutely a perk at minimum.
That's the real tragedy of the inaugural Wards. The kids were lured in with promises of safety, comraderie, and second chances like lambs to the slaughter. All the while, Alexandria and Cauldron knew that many (if not most) of these children would suffer abuse by the prt (like in the case of Reed), die, or face a fate worse than death like poor Mouse Protector. It's horrifying! The idea that they didn't know the danger these kids would be in is literally inconceivable. Especially when one of you is also the head of the prt! They knew, and they didn't care. It improved their chances at the end of the world, and so they did it no matter the cost.

gotta love how Artemis is depicted with a majority female entourage, is a protector of young girls and is associated with things not considered appropriate for women during antiquity (like shunning romance) and almost everyone decided it meant she hated men. Like Hippolytus never existed or something. God forbid women have interests or community

If I have energy I want to draw out some designs for an au I'm spontaneously writing.
(Medieval times, there's a Prophecy. Nightmare rules over this kingdom and is supposed to complete this prophecy, he refuses to because it would harm the people. Dream was sent away and banished by Night because he was dis-illusioned into thinking the prophecy was a Good Thing abd what he was raised to complete. Night collected his Knights (Killer, Dust, Horror, and Cross most recently) and trains them and tells them the truth of the prophecy. They're loyal to him. One day the magic of the prophesy (Apple Magic) leaves Nightmare unexpectedly, returning him to the state he was in before he accepted the mantle. This puts a target on his back and gives Dream a huge advantage in maybe making a comeback. The Knight's decide that their King (newly a young lad and variably scared and frightened) must be protected and they run the kingdom as he normally would, while also ensuring he survives and that the prophecy can't be completed.)

Naomi's Friend: So how is motherhood treating you?
Naomi Solace: Good. I didn't expect this much crying though.
Naomi's Friend: Don't worry, that's normal for young children.
Naomi: Will? I was talking about Apollo.
Apollo, sobbing in the next room: I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Okay I already posted about this once on my main when I was having my live reaction series to the first five PJO books, but like- am I the only one who's REALLY creeped out by Artemis and her Hunters?
Like, genuinly. They give me the biggest ick known to man. And before anyone comes at me about "misogyny" or "just not getting their trauma"-
-I am a girl myself. I know what it's like to not feel safe in certain situations due to men. I had a frankly horrible ex love story. By all means, I'd be a prime candidate for the Hunters.
If it weren't for the fact that they look like a sexist cult to me.
Like listen- idk what your opinion on romance or men is it doesn't mean that you get a free pass a on straight-up being misandric!
Which is something Artemis and her girls DESPRATLY need to be taught if you ask me.
Just the way they talked about men, commenting on them "only being good enough for camp (Halfblood)" when they talked with Bianca in TTC. The way that they were solely focused ON Bianca that entier talk, saying that they would be her new family when the issue of Nico was brought up.
That not only FEELS wrong. That IS just straight-up wrong.
If you'd switch the genders here and make the Hunters of Artemis a group of men talking about women like that you'd have the entier internet burning them at the stake- but if it's a group of girls hating men it's fine like??????
And then also that constant "holier than thou" attitude concerning relationships they seem to have? Like don't get me wrong, if you don't wanna do romance or hang around men that's fine! Whatever shoots your rocket ladies- but don't act like it makes you BETTER or anything!
Honestly? That whole attitude gives me MAJOR Christian Purity Culture vibes.
The way Artemis also seems to traget mainly younger girls for her Hunters is also just.... borderline predatory? I mean I get that the whole thing of the Hunters is that they are a bunch of maidens and stuff- BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ARTEMIS ATLEAST WAIT UNTIL THEY HAVE THE MENTAL CAPACITY TO PROPERLY MAKE A DECISION AS MAJOR AS JOINING YOU!?
I mean it's not like you can't join the Hunters if you've ever fallen in love with someone! Is the thing that you have to be a virgin to join up which is why Artemis goes after young girls????
If that's the case then the Hunters might aswell just be Christian Purist Culture nuts because it'd basically be the same.
Again my main problem isn't the whole "eternal maidens without romance or men" thing. My problem is that they are sexist as hell towards men and straight-up prejudiced to the point that they'd be a social pariah if the genders were switched.
Idk if I'm gonna get smitten for this, but if THAT is supposed to be MY patron!? A straight-up sexist leading something that comes scarily close to being a borderline cult?
Yeah no, no thanks.
No patron needed over there.

Read young avengers (2013) agonist the better judgement of some friends and oh my god were they right.
One of the most boring comics I have ever read and the art honestly doesn't help it, like what the hell was that? Everything is so stiff and nothing seems to actually happen.
Also the team roster sucks, half of this people shouldn't be here.
Billy - understandable and a good choice, I kinda dig the new costume
Teddy - nothing to complain here
Noh-Varr - what?? We already have captain marvel character here so go away
America Chavez - miss America was never an avenger, she was an invader
Kid Loki - still gotta read his comics but no thanks, also Kevin Masterson is right there
Kate - sure... But I still think she should go by hawkingbird
Tommy - always a delight to see him
David - ok so now we are just putting Radom people here
Btw the whole mom monster thing? Can't you guys come up with something cooler please
Why is that Billy/Teddy is the only good romance in all of the young avengers books.
