A government U-turn on a blocked lithium mining project immediately followed by an agreement to supply the EU with critical raw materials has triggered a wave of protest across Serbia
Just days before signing a cooperation agreement with the EU on critical raw materials supply, Serbia gave the renewed go-ahead for Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto to develop what could be Europe’s largest lithium reserves — but further delay looks possible as a fresh wave of protests sweeps the country.
The Jadar mining project had been on hold since 2022 when Belgrade withdrew approval for a spatial plan for the 250-hectare site amid widespread public opposition.
But after a constitutional court ruled the move unlawful earlier this month, the government headed by President Aleksandar Vučić promptly adopted a decree on 16 July allowing the project to restart immediately.
Three days later, European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič inked a "strategic partnership" at a summit in the Serbian capital attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with both of them at pains to stress that environmental standards would be paramount — but this appears not to have assuaged the concerns of local environmental activists.

Tens of thousands rally against Serbia's populist leader
Tens of thousands of people rallied again in downtown Belgrade on Friday, demanding the resignation of Serbia’s populist president and warned of “radicalisation” of the peaceful protest if their demands aren’t met — all in the wake of two mass shootings that stunned the nation.
The protesters carried posters of President Aleksandar Vucic and his close ally Prime Minister Ana Brnabic dressed in…

Police disperse protest in Pristina against Kosovo war crimes trial
Kosovo police clashed with veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) who gathered outside the Pristina hotel where the president of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, Ekaterina Trendafilova, was accommodated.
Members of the left-wing Social Democratic Party of Kosovo (PSD) attempted to break into the Sirius Hotel in Pristina, where Trendafilova was hosting NGO representatives.
At the protest, KLA veterans voiced their rejection of the war crime court. The demonstrators expressed concern about the lack of transparency at the trial, emphasising closed court sessions and lack of information on sources of evidence.
Using smoke bombs and pyrotechnic devices, the veterans clashed with police, resulting in police deploying tear gas, local media reported. The clash led to the detention of several PSD activists, exacerbating tensions in Pristina.
As the situation intensified, journalists reporting on the protest were caught in the crossfire. Tear gas used by the police caused breathing troubles for some reporters on the scene.

Where can I find Free Palestine protests and Ceasefire protests?
A super international and continually updated list of actions can be found at Samidoun: Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network's:
Calendar of Resistance for Palestine 2024
They list events by date, then alphabetically by country, then by city - and it's common for them to have dozens of actions listed for a single date, especially on the weekends.
The United States especially often has 40+ events on a single day, especially on the weekends.
Events are posted with links to the event info posted by whoever's hosting the vast majority of the time.
Look blow the read-more for a list of many of the countries that have been on this protest calendar, in alphabetical order, since I know so many websites/lists of actions are country-specific
*Obviously this isn't the only good source of listings for protest events - there are many others. This is by far the biggest/most international roundup I've found, though, so I started with this. If you know another good place for finding ceasefire protests/events, please feel free to add it in the notes, bc I'm planning to put a bigger roundup together once I find enough other sites

Anti-cop sign seen in Belgrade, Serbia during the protest demanding justice for two young LGBTQ+ people who were humiliated, sexualy assaulted and tortured for hours by the police during the raid on their apartment
Tens of thousands of people have marched through Belgrade, blocking a key bridge in the second large protest since two mass shootings that rattled Serbia and left 17 people dead, including many children.
Protesters gathered in front of the parliament building on Friday before filing by the government’s HQ and on to a highway bridge spanning the Sava River, where evening commuters had to turn their vehicles around to avoid getting stuck. At the head of the column was a black banner reading “Serbia against violence.”
