Laurel had never been much of a morning person. That wasn’t to say that she couldn’t manage to wake herself up in the morning, but she certainly wasn’t going to be happy about it. Sadly, however, there was always something that needed doing, whether that was a plant to tend to or a lesson plan to write up, at least during her career as a teacher (it may have been short-lived and ended poorly, but she could appreciate the structure that went into it all), and so mornings and her had a tentative, yet resentful, alliance.

She’s softened to them, though, over time. It’s mostly because of Peyton.

Laurel’s beloved continues to sleep soundly, a few strands of brown hair falling over her face. She breathes deeply, each exhale pushing the hair away before it falls back to where it was. The first rays of sunlight glinting through the window illuminate her face, making her look ethereal. Laurel always loves looking at Peyton, but these times are some of her favorites.

She can’t spend the whole morning in bed, though. There are things she needs to do before Peyton wakes up. Slowly, quietly, she pulls off the covers and leaves the bedroom, heading into the kitchen.

About fifteen minutes later, after she’s sliced an orange and started pancake batter sizzling on the stove, Peyton trudges into the room, still blinking the sleep out of her eyes. “Morning, flytrap,” she mumbles, her voice still tinged with sleep but unmistakable love.

“Good morning, wildflower,” Laurel returns. “Breakfast’s going to be ready in a minute.”

“It smells delicious,” Peyton remarks as she pulls out a chair.

Laurel gives a soft chuckle. “Nothing but the best for today, right?”

This morning, while it’s started out much like many others do, isn’t a regular morning for the two of them. It’s the one year anniversary of the time their relationship took that strange step into more--in its own unusual way. One year ago today, Laurel chose to be the person Peyton saw in her and stopped her from psychically self-destructing. It wasn’t the most orthodox start to a love story, but it’s undeniably them.

“Happy anniversary,” Peyton says, as if she could see what Laurel was thinking about at that moment. 

Laurel takes two plates over to the table. “Happy anniversary to you, too, peony. Not to rush you, but I have a little surprise for you when you’re done eating.”

Peyton’s eyes widen. “You didn’t have to go to all that trouble!”

Laurel shrugs. “No, but I wanted to.”

While pleasure thrums through her at Peyton’s blush, there’s an undercurrent of nervousness. Peyton is devoted to her, Laurel knows this, but Laurel herself still isn’t used to showing any kind of vulnerability. It’s easier with Peyton than it’s been with anyone in the past, but showing her something she created with her own hands, opening herself up for judgement like that…it’s the sort of thing she’d only ever do for Peyton.

Peyton finishes her food quickly, despite Laurel’s insistence not to hurry on her account, and her eyes are positively sparkling. “So when do I get to see this surprise?”

Laurel’s hand moves to the chair next to hers, where a large rectangular shape is covered with a cloth. “Here.”

She hands it over the table. Peyton pulls back the cloth and inhales sharply.

Sketched on canvas paper is a traditional drawing of Peyton herself, surrounded by various kinds of plants creeping down the page and curling around her. The flowers are rendered in more detail, while the smaller details around Peyton’s face show more hesitation. Laurel’s shared her sketches of plants and flowers in the past, but she’d never put this much effort into a drawing of a person before.

“Violets for loyalty and love between women. Daffodils for new beginnings. Peonies, because they remind me of you…”

“...and bleeding hearts. For passion and vulnerability,” Peyton finishes. “They’re flowers for our relationship.”

Laurel’s mouth quirks up at the edges. “So you like it? I didn’t deface your image too much?”

Peyton takes her hand. “You could never. It’s amazing, Laur. Thank you.”

You deserve this and so much more, Laurel thinks, but in the moment, she just smiles, focusing on Peyton’s hand in hers.

Spinel doing everything she can to comfort you while you're stuck in bed! (For whatever reason a gem might be bedbound, something to do with the defect, maybe?) She dotes on you so much it's comical. She wraps one of her arms around you tightly and keeps rubbing her hand over where it hurts. She'll often ask how you're feeling and if there's anything she can do… too often, honestly, but she can't help it, she can't stand to see you in pain when she cares about you so much! "Anythin' for my Fluor~" she says as she gives you kiss after kiss on your forehead. (@proton-selfships)

Ohhh... I'm currently in a lot of pain bc of post surgery I could definitely see Fluorite having problems with his chipped gem and her having to look after him... Please this is such a sweet thought. He'd worry about wanting to push through it so he doesn't take too much from her but she insists he's allowed to rest and let her take care of him for a while....

Nose kisses or forehead kisses?

Forehead kisses, definitely. There's a distinct sense of safety, acceptance, and reassurance innate that everything is going to be alright and that no matter what, we'll face whatever comes together.

5. Hugs from behind or hugs from the front?

Usually it's from behind, but sometimes when things are really bad and we just need to be pulled out of our own heads and grounded in the present moment, a hug from the front is the go-to.

11. Calling each other by their names, plain and simple, or calling each other really flowery pet names?

Usually nicknames and pet names of any sort are reserved for playful teasing, otherwise it's usually names plain and simple or just a shortened version. One of Zinnia's favourites is 'my flame' in Draconic when she's being particularly romantic or Ray-ray when she's being cute. I like to call her Zinny or Zin-zin to tease her.

17. Love at first sight or slow burn?

Slow burn like you wouldn't fucking believe. Holy shit. I will say there was certainly an attraction at first sight, but the actual feelings took a while to develop and take hold, and to actually be brave enough to express them (mostly because of Zinnia's grief, attachment and intimacy issues, and living much of her life with a martyr complex and not letting herself have close relationships for a very long time).

1) Vanilla- What's something you do with your f/o that makes you feel at peace?

Cooking with Rumi, it always relax her when she's with me. I also sit next to her on the couch, having my head on either her shoulder or lap.

2. Chocolate- How long have you known your f/o?

Since April 4, 2021!

3. Strawberry- What's a memory you two share that makes you smile no matter what?

It would be our first date, which we went for a stroll. It was a very lovely day & held her hand for the first time.

4. Mint Chip- What's something that you disagree with your f/o on?

Sometimes we disagree on music taste. Rumi doesn't care the 80's songs while I like the 80's songs.

5. Cookie Dough- What's yours and your f/os' love languages?

Mine & Rumi's love language is physical touch.

6. Moose Tracks- What does a typical night in look like for you two?

Exercising together on a workout DVD. After we do that, we just relax on the couch, drinking water while watching a TV show.

7. Cherry- Who does the cooking and who does the cleaning?

I do the cooking & Rumi does the cleaning.

8. Salted Caramel- How long did it take for you to realize you liked your f/o? Or vice versa, how long did it take them to say something if they spoke up first?

It didn't take too long! After she saved me from the villain, I started to have a huge crush on her & couldn't get her out of my mind!

😖 what moment flustered you the most?

Jacob in 50's outfit is making me so flustered..

But poor Eden when Jacob decides to show off his athletic side or worse show off his biceps..

Other counselors are hiding their faces cause it's cringe to them but it's how Jacob flirts besides his more sexual jokes and sappy words (he canonically uses pet name pookie!)

Any time Jacob smiles genuinely is when Eden has to hide their face cause they swear it's red as firetruck.

💘 (if applicable) what moment made them realize they were in love with you?

After breaking up with Emma, Jacob spent weeks being heartbroken despite their summer fling being short in nature. Jacob tends to fall fast and hard and getting over someone takes him time.

During this time, Eden was constant presence by his side. They had been by his side before, both bitching and moaning about Emma before the break-up or hanging out around camp.

If you were to ask Jacob, the moment wasn't anything huge or groundbreaking, but it felt like it to him.

Both like to spent time by the lake, whenever swimming or not. The pair just sat there and talked for hours.

It was the moment Eden had courage to place their hand on Jake's which rested on the pier. The shy smile Eden wore and how warm their hand was on his and he was goner. He dared to hope that maybe, Eden would stay and not abandon him when he gets sappy or possessive or too much.

💓 (if applicable) what moment made you realize you were in love with them?

It was only few weeks into the camp, routines established and counselors and kids got used to one another.

Eden was late from every night camp fire, which counselor use to gossip or play games after Mr H goes to sleep - he makes counselors to sing songs around the fire and give their assignments for tomorrow - and other counselors were chatting about them. Not exactly in positive light, as try as they might, Eden struck out like sore thumb as different.

They appreciated Ryan and Abigail defending them, but it was when Jacob got into the ensuing argument when Eden had to stop and really listen as they had been approaching the fire to cease the gossip.

''She's not weird! [receives disbelieving looks from others] OK, maybe she is, but she's not bad! She's fun to be around, she likes my jokes and Abi's paintings and loves to pester Ryan about his stupid podcasts and you just talk shit about her behind her back?! She's my type of weird!''

There was silence between the counselors and Eden really absorbed his words, flustered by how Jacob just admitted he likes having them around and doesn't mind they don't fit in. Something about how passionate Jacob seemed and how sincere he was, letting that mask of joker slip for a second, made Eden realize they truly did love him. It wasn't just stupid summer crush that would fade when the camp ended.

Of course, the other counselors went straight into edging-on-cruel teasing jokes about Jacob and resident counselor weirdo Eden and Jacob stormed off as usual and Eden followed him.

Imagine Zinnia and her pokémon defending you in a really tough battle! After the dust is cleared, she asks you if you're all right and grabs your hand to pull you back to your feet. When you stand up again, she pulls you into an embrace, hands clinging so tightly that it's clear she never wants to let go. "…We make a great team, huh, partner?"
