So, I have an old Fanfiction.net account where I posted my german fanfics ages ago, before I stopped writing fic for years. I picked it up again two years ago, this time in English and on Ao3.
About once a year though, I will get a message from FFN about a comment on an old fic or about a German Beta reading request. (I also got update notifications for the fics I followed for the longest time but those have stopped for 3 years or so.)
The latest beta request I got and accepted is this massive undertaking a German speaker took on translating english fics, and I'm helping out with that. The beta reading happens on googledocs but the communication happens on FFN and that made me feel nostalgic.
And I know FFN's quality had gone down and I know I had my reasons for going over to Ao3 but I thought 'Why Not' and decided to just make a new account on FFN and post my current fic there as well :D
To make this short and readable, the rest of the story is in list form:
exploring FFN's interface again was pretty nostalgic, especially when I uploaded my word document onto the site instead of having to copy/paste my fic onto it
The terms of service were just as I remembered them but only now did I fully realize how restrictive they are, especially the part about the publsihed authors who don't want fanfic of their work. Badly spelt or badly written fics in the grammar sense aren't allowed either and I think that aspect of FFN is following me until today
There was a waiting period for posting fic and other stuff, which is fine, every site has their own way to deal with spam
THEY DO NOT DEAL WITH THEIR SPAM
so I uploaded one of my oneshots just to see what would happen. It's for a newish anime (JJK) and while it is pretty far down their list in terms of works, it still has nearly 2k so I thought 'fine, could be worse'.
The next morning I wake up to 5 reviews and 6 PMs, ALL of it of the "I'll make art for your fic" spam variety except for one that looked like an AI summary of my fic.
I wasn't bothered by it because I deal with spam sometimes on Ao3 and I didn't have high expectations for that fandom on FFN anyway so I go to work deleting the comments and blocking the people who sent them to me
The blocking works even though its cumbersome
But I'll tell you how I nearly ripped my hair out trying to find the delete button for the spam reviews. I found the "mark as abuse/spam" button but I looked everywhere for the delete one. Just. To. Find. Out... they don't have one D:
so maybe I never realized (and/or forgot) that FFN doesn't allow you to delete reviews because I was writing in a niche language years ago, but that's... that's punitive. That goes so hard against my current fanfic sensibilities and climate of a hobby you engage in with fun and a relaxed attitude, but FFN already said at the beginning, they want to make a good writer out of you so you will check your grammar and spelling and you will listen to criticism you'll better hope is constructive.
Illuminating times these last few days
I'm not waiting for FFN staff to delete those spam "reviews", I'm waiting on more spam people to write to me so I can block them before I delete the fic and repost it. I'll put a few more oneshots there later, too, and see how it goes. I might give up on this new account alltogether as well.
And that was my adventure in venturing out to old places again. As a side note: if you get into old media you should visit FFN and look around there for fic, too. You won't find most of their collections anywhere else.
This looks like it would interest @olderthannetfic and @ao3commentoftheday

Why did Jazz kiss Svoboda at the end? Did that feel completely out of left field for anyone else?
Him kissing her made some sense, he had dropped enough innuendos at that point to make his interest in her believable enough, but at no point in the book did she seem to express any mutual attraction to him. Her behavior around him seemed more like she had completely slotted him in the "friend" category (completely forgetting that she was wearing nothing but one of his shirts when he stared at her? C'mon.) Surely this isn't just me right? It seemed like she considered him a friend. She expressed disgust at the idea of having sex with him or kissing him multiple times. A spur of the moment "I didn't kill hundreds of people" kiss, sure, maybe, but the non-bet at the end implied that they hooked up after the book ended.
Is it because there's some unspoken rule where female protagonists aren't allowed to be single at the end of a book unless its in widowhood? Is it because Jazz (for some reason) has an unfounded reputation of promiscuity and someone (the author, the publsiher, idk) felt her victory would not be complete without a shag? Is it because one of those people felt Svoboda needed to be rewarded for being a good friend to a pretty woman? Was it a bad way of conveying that she had trauma with her previous groomer boyfriend that led to an inablility to maintain platonic relationships with men? I am so confused, why did that happen?
Hopefully it's not just me, because at no point could I have predicted that she would ever see Svoboda as a sexual prospect, let alone actually persue him. Lowkey disappointed that the book called Artemis is about a smart, independent woman who does not actually appear to have any female friends and does, in fact, have an apparently romantic subplot, unlike Weir's books about men :/
And while we're on that, Jazz appears to only have three relationships (a stretch, more like vague acquaintances) with other women in the entire book, and two of them are antagonistic. We don't even hear about any female friends from work, childhood, or even the bar she frequents, but we do hear about her previous boyfriends. This books technically passed the Bechdel test with Jazz and Ngugi talking about ZAFO, but man, it sure doesn't feel like it

how much of a mythological figure is radha? is she mentioned at all in the texts, how often?
Radha is mostly found in poetry aside from the main MB/Harivamsha/Bhagavatam. I'll give how much I am personally aware of...rest what I saw, the sources cited by Wikipedia (especially the publsihed books are reliable), that you can check out! ❤️
Note: I have just mentioned the earliest proposed date for each point. There are, in practice, significant overlap between the works (especially the older ones).
4th century BCE – Bhasa’s Balacharita (doesn’t mention Radha, but sets a solid foundation for Krishna’s life in Vraja).
3th century BCE – Mahabharata (Krishna’s association with gopis is substantiated but Radha is not mentioned by name), Matsya Purana.
2nd century BCE – Gahasattasai (When you blew into Radha’s eye, to remove a grain of dust, Krishna, that was when the other gopis’ pride was demolished), Harivamsha (describes Krishna’s early life in detail).
3rd century CE – Markandeya Purana
4th century CE – Padma, Brahma, Brahmanda purana
5th century CE – Silappathikaram (Radha and Krishna’s story seems reflected in Nappinnai and Mayavan’s story)
6th century CE – Devi-Bhagavata, Vayu, Bhagavata Puranas (multiple mentions of a ‘special Gopi’, but Radha is not mentioned by name in the 2nd one), Garga Samhita.
8th century CE – Jayavallabha’s Vajjalaggam (Krishna wiped Keshi’s blood off his hand on Radha’s chest), Brahmavaivarta, Skanda Puranas, Andal’s poetry
10th century CE – Shiva Purana
12th century CE – Varaha Purana
13th century CE – Nimbarka acharya, Jayadeva’s Geeta-Govindam, Warkari traditions (this is when Radha-as-a-goddess finds subcontinent-wide acclaim).
14th century CE – Vidyapati (popularized Braja-buli, imagined Radha-Krishna mostly as a royal couple), Chandidas (sahajiya tradition, Sri Krishna-keertana, diff. guy Baru Chandidas), Gopala Tapani Upnishada.
15th century CE – Roop Goswami (added most of the modern set of myths including the main set of Gopis aside from Radha, also associated with 5 other Goswamis of Vrindavan), Srivara, Narsinh Mehta, Vallabhacharya, Madhavendra Puri, Ishvar Puri, and Advaita acharya…(I believe Jatila-Kutila-Aayana set of myths also originated roughly around this time).
16th century CE – Sri Chaitanya (he started a cultural revolution in Bengal with Radha-Krishna in the focus), Meera, Surdas, Haridas, Naradiya Purana, Raskhan, Hita-Harivansh, Narottama Dasa, Krishnadasa Kaviraja, Govindadas, Murari Gupta, Narahari Sarkar, Basudev Ghosh, Lochandas, Jnanadas, Balaram Das, Syed Sultan and Dwija Chandidas.
17th century CE – Swaminarayan, Pranami sampradaya, Kaviranjan (chhoto Vidyapati), Kavishekhar, Radhaballabh Das, Ghanashyam Das and Ramgopal Das.
18th century CE – Charandas, Rajput/Pahari etc. painting traditions, Vaisnavadas, Chandrashekhar, Radhamohan Thakur, Narahari Chakravarty, Yadunandan.
19-20th century CE – Shah Abdul Karim, Hilm, Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam etc.
Some more texts have been noted in this site: (x)
There are obviously many, many other texts, so the above list is not to be considered exhaustive.

Your poems are beautiful! Are you a published or professional writer in real life?
Ugh, thank you so much! I put so much into my poems (and eventually my stories), so this means a lot to me.
To answer you question, yes and no.
I am a professional journalist/freelance writer. I write articles on a plethora of subjects and my works are professionally published in MANY publications world wide. So I am published, I get paid to write, I go back and forth with editors, publications, etc. I have over 25+ articles publsihed.
However, I am not yet a published poet/fictional writer and that is really what I aspire to be! My profession in journalism, and already being published in the field gives me a bit of knowledge about how the writing industry works. And as a published journalist, I do understand the process a bit. But I would love to be known also for my original works, characters, etc.
Thank you so much again <3.

I Don't Wanna Face The Music by hereforh
Louis likes to think he's a pretty normal, typical lad. He likes spending nights at the pub with his mates, he loves football and is very close to his family. So when he moves to London for uni, he doesn’t think much will be different.
Until he makes these news friends who are nothing like his mates back home and change his life for the better - and this one boy who messes with his head from the get go and makes him question everything he has every thought about himself.
firs one is gonna be my own fic, because why the hell not. it's my first published fic and i'm so excited about it!!!! t's a WIP but most of it is already written, so it's being publsihed weekly - new chapter coming tomorrow, btw!!! I mean, I like it quite a lot, so I think you should give it a chance and go read it! (pls? <3)
Twist And Then Collide by bananasandboots (181k)
"These instances can last anywhere from a few days to a few months," one doctor says. "Or they can persist indefinitely."
"Indefinitely?" Louis questions, the only one of them able to find his voice. He keeps throwing cautious glances at Harry, searching to make sure he's okay, to make sure he's still with them, still breathing. Harry wishes he wouldn't. He swallows the bile rising up the back of his throat, audibly exhaling through his nose, sharp breaths, small breaths. It's all he can do to keep from emptying his stomach.
"Travis is in a coma," the doctor says. "There's no way to be certain how long it might last."
Or, the one where Harry's boyfriend falls into a coma and Harry falls for his boyfriend's best friend.
this was so, so lovely. I think I mentioned that I was starting to read it on last month's rec, so it's here again because I finished it and loved it so much. the writing is incredible and the way the characters get close through their grief is SO well done. you can literally feel everything they're feeling and t's such a beautiful read. it's not complete, but the last chapter is supposed to be just an epilogue, so I didn't feel like anything was missing with the way it ends.
You, Me, (and everyone we know) by imogenlee
Rockstar Harry Styles has been making headlines since he was barely legal. After a string of bad decisions, PR nightmares, and an obvious inability to take anything seriously, management and his other band members insist he needs a full-time, live-in personal assistant. After hiring and firing half of the executive PA's in the city, the boys stumble across one that might be able to put up with Harry's shit.
this is a WIP by a dear friend of mine who you might know for YCHIITS. So you know can trust her with frequent updates ;) this fic is amazing and layered and it has enemies to lovers and deeper issues and it's everything this fandom needs right now. trust me.
Save Me (from myself) by imogenlee
The problem with being friends with Liam Payne was that he had a lot of friends... and forced them to be around each other. When they finished high school, both Louis and Harry were equally relieved that they wouldn't have to tolerate each other constantly or whatever it was that they did.
For five years, it worked out perfectly. They'd only had to see each other a handful of times.
Unfortunately, Liam had to go and get engaged, ask them to both be groomsmen, and then go full groomzilla on their arses. With just twelve weeks to plan the 'perfect' destination wedding and throw every ridiculous pre-wedding celebration Liam and his fiancée stumble across, it was safe to say they were firmly back in each other's lives.
And no one could have predicted that was exactly what they needed.
another WIP from dear friend - yes, she's a genius. this one was a lovely surprise that i never thought i'd be into, but, again: trust me. you'll get hooked. the characters dynamic just sucks you in completely.
Still on that tightrope by lunarheslwt (13k)
“Let me take care of you?” “I don’t need to be taken care of,” Louis scoffed, though he still tilted his head up in efforts to get Harry closer. “Why?” Harry asked with a hum, “If this were about me, you wouldn’t let me pull this shit.” Louis’ defiance crumbled as Harry rubbed his thumb back and forth across a nipple, breath catching. “So why is it any different when it comes to you?” “Because.” Harry skimmed over his tummy and chest teasingly. “Because?” “Because,” Louis repeated, breathier, unfocused. “Let me take care of you, baby,” Harry asked again, pushing his shirt up. “Let me make you feel good. I’ve got you.”
Or, Louis has never bottomed before and carries that shame, and Harry has never had to deal with Louis keeping secrets from him before. Neither were prepared for walls to be built or arguments to knock them down, when really, all Harry wants to do is take care of Louis.
this is such a sweet and sexy read. It shows the day to day of a established couple who's struggling with a minor issue that could be easily solved with just communicating to each other - and I'm such a sucker for miscommunication in fics so this was right up my alley.
Chicago by HelloLovers13 (3.5k)
They hadn't seen each other in four years, why was Louis still writing songs about Harry? Larry take on the song Chicago
i'm usually not one for short fics, but this was super lovely and sweet and I wish it was longer!
pull you closer (kiss me harder) by sunshineandthemoonlight (5.8k)
Louis pouts at Harry from across the room. "Why're you getting dressed?"
Harry turns to face him, running a hand through hair still damp from the shower. "One of us needs to have clothes on, to answer the door," he says. "For breakfast."
Louis is about to chuck a pillow at Harry and demand he strip immediately – clothes can always be put back on later – when he notices something.
He pauses, tilts his head to the side.
“Are you wearing panties?”
~
Harry likes to wear panties sometimes. It’s never been a sexual thing, until suddenly it is.
I'm in love with this fic and i wish it had a million chapters. The writing is perfection and i love the hinting at their complicated situation while they're still so sweet to each other and clearly still so in love. one of my favorite reads lately, for sure.

genre: love at first sight
synopsis: Jeongin is kicking his 3rd year at JY Publsihing as an underpaid intern. Life could be a lot more enjoyable if he would at last recieve the position he has been dreaming of... but his usual coffee runs make it more bearable once a new barista starts working at his regural coffee shop.

24th day of SKZMAS
Tumblr media
December 24th
You haven’t seen Jeongin for the past week. You feared the worst, that he might actually got fired because of you. Because of your reckless advise that he took to the heart and now he no longer wanted to see you. But a couple days after your impromptu peptalk, a new intern entered your coffee shop and once he asked for the order you happily scribbled Jeongin’s name on one of the paper cups.
So he made it, you sighed to yourself with a relief when it happened. However, you couldn’t really shake off that eerie feeling you felt in your chest with his lack of visits. You thought you were close enough for him to tell you… to come running to you about the promotion but maybe you have mistaken his advances. Maybe he is just generally nice to catering employees and all this was just in your head.
It’s Christmas Eve tonight and as there was nothing else for you to do, you agreed to take on the morning shift yourself. Luckily, you close at one in the afternoon, so you still have plenty of time to go home and celebrate with your family.
The cafe is quieter than usual. You take it as a good sign that in this corporal area, where mostly offices work, there are only a handful of people who spend their holidays working here. The door jingles for about the third time that day, not much earlier before closing and you spin around to greet the incoming guest with the utmost cheerfulness.
As Jeongin steps into the cafe, his attire makes you speechless on the spot. He has a long coat on with casual clothes, something that you thought you would never have the privilege of seeing him in. However, the most shocking part isn’t his outfit, but the huge box he is holding, neatly packaged in wrapping paper with a bow on it. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas to you, too.” you respond, smiling in amazement. “You shouldn't have… what is this?”
“You should open it to see.” He chuckles cheekily before handing you the present. “Why are you working on Christmas? Are you aiming for that promotion?”
“I'd love to say I do.” you roll your eyes, taking the box and placing it on the counter. “God, it's so big.” you huff as you place the box on a table, the one you sat by with him just a week ago. “I'm afraid I'm just a loser who has no one to spend Christmas with.” you explain with a chuckle as you start to unwrap your present.
“Well, that makes the two of us.” he smiles fondly, watching your movements. “I’m sorry I wasn't coming by but the company made me work tirelessly.” he chuckles.
“Oh, love, please don't burn yourself out.” you say, glancing up at him and he is already watching you. There's so much adoration in his gaze… it makes your heart race. You finally open the present, and it's a thick coat, black and soft with padding. Also looking incredibly expensive. “Innie! Gosh, you really shouldn't have! I cannot-”
“We worked hard for that.” he grins. “I got the PR position and without you I wouldn't have gotten a raise. You deserve it.” he smiles. “Besides, you need something warm to the Christmas open-air-concert we are going to.” he adds, taking out two tickets from his coat’s pocket.
You are speechless for a second before you jump in his arms happily. Hugging his neck, you feel his arms wrap around you, and gosh, your heart is going to explode. “You did so well. I'm so proud of you.” you whisper.
“I couldn't have done it without you!” he admits, burying his face in the crook of your neck before spinning you around in his arms. “I was also thinking, if you might be free… it's kind of late to ask you though but… the office party is on the 25th and I was wondering if you’d like to join me as my date?” he finally blurbs out.
You pull back to look at his cute face, all blushed and warm and smiling at you beautifully. “That sounds like a great time. I'm in.”
“Oh, thank god it would have been embarrassing to turn up alone, after all I gushed about you to everyone.” he chuckles, booping your nose and still holding you.
“Stop being so cute!” you squeal and squeeze him in the hug. You generally don't believe in Christmas miracles… but this one, it can hardly be called anything else. “I think I might have annoyed Ryujin by always talking about you, too…”
“Is this why you are all on your own today?” he jokes with a playful glint in his eyes. “When do you finish? I can help you close up.”
“I am done for the most part, actually.” you grin and there is a moment of silence before you speak. “Do you think… would it be okay if I kissed you?”
“I think I should be kissing you.” he hums after a second of thinking, and he leans in to kiss you finally.
You giggle in the kiss, tugging him closer because you want to feel his whole being in the kiss. And oh, you do. He might look young and innocent, but Jeongin is an amazing kisser. He picks up on your rhythm in a second, and the way he kissed you makes your knees go weak.
He seems to catch on all your little movements and he grabs your waist to keep you grounded. Your tongues dance, lips melting against each other as they do. You are like water and fire, complementing each other perfectly.
“Innie…” you pull back breathlessly, because you feel like he could go on forever.
“Yeah.” he chuckles sheepishly but without any regrets. “Let’s close up and have lunch?”
“I'd like that very much.” you say, kissing his nose. “And then, you are coming over to help me pick an outfit for the party.”
“Yep, exactly what I had in mind.” he grins cheekily, his eyes resembling a fox. You slap his arm as you step back to close up the counter while Jeongin picks up a broom and gets to work as well. You wonder how on earth did you get so lucky…
to be continued...

what did you think of nick land?
you asked this in past tense as though i just met him at a dinner party. why, he was loud and he used all the gravy. what a rude man!
here’s my real, very long answer: [2.4k words]
obviously today he is a miserable racist toad who goes on and on about the blockchain and woke capital. and after he moved to China he worked as an actual CCP propagandist. so he's not my hero. but thats the late era. early era: his earliest stuff is really good. i have mostly handled his first paper, Kant, Capital and the Prohibition of Incest (1988). the thing is, his scholarship in this essay isn't very good. he makes a huge argument about the development of capitalism, the situation in South Africa, the development of the family and so forth, yet it has only 11 citations, all to Kant, Levi-Strauss, Nietzche, Marx, Luce Iriguay and Monique Wittig. none of his historical or economic argument interacts with history or economics (the Marx citation is just for the page number for the quoted phrase "so-called primitive accumulation", which he uses without operationalizing), and his anthropological claims rest on the already yellowing pages of Levi-Strauss's 1947 book on kinship structures. further, in handling Levi-Strauss he makes, i believe, two errors: 1. he grounds the entire discussion in the 'dual-organization' which is, correct me if i'm wrong, just the first part of the book, and if you included the rest of the material it'd work a lot less as a just-so story (the highest page number citation to Levi-Strauss is 88, the whole book is over 500 pages—you can literally see where he gave up reading), and 2. he assumes that Levi-Strauss’s theories about contemporary non-industrial societies are equally true about prehistoric societies. he doesn’t even mention that he’s doing that, he just implicitly treats the book as a description of the arbitrarily distant ontogenesis of whatever genealogy is under discussion. take the duplicity in the first paragraph that he cites Levi-Strauss:
In The Elementary Structures of Kinship Claude Levi-Strauss notes the frequent distinction made by various societies between normal and 'rich food' (op. cit. pg 8; all page numbers correspond to the pdf)
which is that normal food is produced within the moiety and ‘rich food’ is imported from outside the moiety through gifting or exchange. that this is a ‘frequent’ distinction in ‘various’ societies is as much background as we get; from now on we act like it’s an essential feature of all societies. skip to the end of the paragraph,
If 'rich food' is the primordial element of trade its metamorphosis into the modern 'commodity' can be seen as... [he uses this to scaffold an argument about Enlightenment philosophy] (ibid.)
this distinction Levi-Strauss ‘noted’ in ‘various’ contemporary nonindustrial societies has quietly become the PRIMORDIAL source of the commodity form. if you’re going to project Levi-Strauss’s observations into the past like that you’re really going to need to make the argument that you can. but the truth is that you can’t. this has been a pernicious trend in virtually every field, from anthropology to biology to philosophy, discussed in (for example) this 1978 paper (that’s ten years, we remind the reader—and feeling a little good about ourselves while we do it—before Land’s article was publsihed) Myths About Hunter-Gatherers by anthropologist Carol R. Ember,
I take issue wtth the belief that we are entitled to infer from [information about contemporary hunter-gatherers] what cultural patterns must have been typical in the distant past. We know, for example, that there is substantial variation among recent hunter-gatherers in residence, subsistence, division of labor, and warfare. If these variations are the result of different causal conditions, then what has been "typical" in recent times may only be a statistical artifact of the recent prevalence of certain causal conditions.
in a 2001 review of an unlikely book called Hierarchy in the Forest by Christopher Boehm, which makes a similar assumption about the historical utility of information from contemporary hunter-gatherer societies, she reflects on her argument in this paper, writing “I have argued such an assumption is problematic, especially since extant foragers live in very marginal enviornments” while historical foragers occupied optimal enviornments. so if there is such a widespread distinction between normal and ‘rich’ food, that’s certainly interesting, but we’re very far from saying it’s a primordial distinction emanating from prehistory, as opposed to one resulting from the interaction of similar societies in marginal enviornments, if we can’t specify the causal conditions of that cultural distinction. all of this is a lot of ink to spend on one claim, which is not even the most outrageous claim in that paragraph. in the middle he writes that,
The difference between rich food and normal food maps onto the difference between filiation (relation by blood) and alliance (relation by marriage). This is because rich food occupies the position of women within a marriage system regulated by patrilineal exogamy, with its producer renouncing it for himself, and thus echoing the prohibition of incest.
this one cultural distinction ‘maps onto’ this other cultural distinction. why? because one part ‘occupies the position’ of something else in the other one. and that ‘echoes’ still a third cultural practice. huh? why? nevermind—it’s time to talk about Kant instead. it’s remarkable that this passed peer review at all. in fact, that’s probably why it was published in the miscellany section of Third Text (vol 2 no 5, 1988), a journal of art criticism, which in those early days published more articles by sculptors and designers than academics. the issue before this one contains a glowing review of Black Athena: the Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. you get the idea—Nick Land was always a bit of a crank.
wait a minute, didn’t i start off saying it was really good? yeah. i still think so. the reason its so frustrating is the overall argument in this paper is really good. Land’s case is that capitalism relies on a continuous process of primitive accumulation (the aggregation of wealth through enclosure, robbery, slavery and so forth), but that this economic process creates political conditions—mutiny, revolt, unrest—which place capitalism in danger. thus, to handle this threat primitive accumulation was outsourced goegraphically to colonies, and internally to ghettos and bantustans, which quarantine the political consequences of accumulation (“I say that these colonies are not costly, they are more faithful, they injure less, and the injured, as has been said, being poor and scattered, cannot hurt”—Machiavelli). this quarantining creates a racial 'other’ which makes and continually renews the opportunity for cultural exogamy, the kind that ruled the world pre-captialism because of the incest taboo. but capitalist society, and capitalist thought, in fact rejects this exogamous exchange, and retreats to a kind of endogamy—anti-miscegnation, militarized borders, and so on, except that, due to capitalism’s dependence on a primitive accumulation quarantined to the racial other, the racial other can never be fully excluded, and this endogamy is always in trouble. racism is, therefore, patriarchy’s nervous, unsuccessful self-transvaluation in response to the demands capitalism places on it, and this triggers a meltdown of the incest taboo (’inhibited synthesis’) which appears twice, once in the economic sphere—as the commodity form—and again in philosophy—as the synthetic a prori, an ‘alterity already inscribed within the system’ (paraphrase; op. cit. pg 9). the revolutionary solution Land proposes is (taking the opposite side to Shulmith Firestone, who also read the oppression of women through Levi-Strauss’s dual-organization, until she decided women’s liberation was bound up with the abolition of the incest taboo) a radical exogamy, an embrace of alterity even at the cost of self-dissolution. xenophilia. lesbian vampires. jungle. meltdown has a place for you . . .
you get the picture. its a beautiful theory. the relationship he describes between economics, politics and culture is very convincing to me, even if the particulars can’t be the way he says, since he’s using old, outdated sources—and using them badly. and the connection with philosophy he supposes is too clumsy to me—of course there must be some relationship, but the way he wants to approach it is pretty unclear. and yeah, its still a just-so story, that conveniently ties women’s liberation, anti-racism, anti-colonialism, and anti-capitalism all together into one program, all while conserving a role for philosophers like him. i don’t know where the argument that primitive acculumation is a continuous feature of capitalism started. i know it was a big part of Federici’s thought after a certain stage, and it gets a completely explicit statement in Anti-Oedipus: “So true is it that primitive accumulation is not produced just once at the dawn of capitalism, but is continually reproducing itself” (pg 251). the chapter is the Civilized Capitalist Machine, the same one we get the name ‘accelerationism’ from. they get there by engaging with a bunch of economics papers and marxist writers. and if you thumb a few pages back in the book you’ll get to the chapter called Barbarian or Imperial Representation (pg 220), which is about incest, which also introduces the idea of a relationship between the incest taboo and alliances. and for a piece of writing that contains the spontaneous utterance “O Caligula, O Heliogaba-lus, O mad memory of vanished emperors!” in the middle of a paragraph (pg 222), the scholarship is a lot more serious than in Land’s essay, connecting ethnographic work with information about writing systems and other data, criticisms of psychoanalytic theories, and even finding time for Nietzsche—who’s also in Land’s essay. so perhaps there are some of Land’s fingerprints on a copy somewhere. but all of this is a bit unfair, because we’re holding Land to certain academic standards, certain styles of reasoning and methods for handling (or, indeed, providing) evidence, which are, for Nick Land, the very thing at stake.
look here, if i thought the only worthwhile way to write nonfiction was to make 15 pages of inductive reasoning, with every ‘t’ crossed and every citation sourced, and send it off to Mind i wouldn’t be writing stream-of-consciousness rants on tumblr every day. there are other things to write, other impulses writing can capture, and other audiences waiting with other methods of reading. over the course of the 90s Land and his buddies would build a bit of a walled garden, not just the actual CCRU, but a subculture of ‘para-academic’ writers, speakers, and artists who very rarely reference anyone outside their hermeneutic circle, and who no one outside of their hermeneutic circle ever references. this is the attack on Reza Negarestani made by goodreads user Paul (a former Heidegger scholar, Nazi history revisionist, conservative Chrsitian and race realist) in his review and comments, who remarks that continental philosophy has “fringes full of charlatans who cite/publish each other”, before he types up a long angry rant to one critic, questioning his credentials: “Seriously, can you give me a list of the books you've read by Kant and about Kant (in the original languages if possible), and who you studied with? Have you passed doctoral comps on any of these figures or taught them to others?” to him, Negarestani & Land are charlatans who create a cult around themselves in order to sell the books they print on their own vanity presses. and i am, i admit, a little suspicious of them myself—Reza and Land both founded this online school where you pay thousands of dollars to get an MFA in ‘Post-Planetary Universal Design’ over Google Hangouts and Google Classroom, or you can pay a few hundred dollars to attend seminars on Bahktain (this institution is apparently accredited). Land was fired for being racist btw. are those things worth going to? for a quarter of that price i could get a whole course on the astrological significance of the newly discovered dwarf planets from A Bigger Picture Astrology. IMAGINE A YOD
IN THE ASTROLOGICAL SKY FOR
SEVEN YEARS. . .
anyway, rightfully or wrongfully suspicious—you can’t just say all that and forget that there was this thing called the CCRU, there was this thing people believed in called Accelerationism, and so on, as though writing is just writing and books are just books. the small minded world that Paul comes from—this is something they were trying to outrun. it has something of the character of the Surrealist Bureau of Research, or the Acéphale Society, and things like that. why make a walled garden out of your philosophy? why cultivate a non-academic audience? why meet in secret, play jungle music, hallucinate? the writing only affirms the milieu. like a manifesto. and today the milieu around those people isn’t worth being part of. discussion hovers around announcing in-group affiliation: this is deterritorialized and based, that is striated and cringe. another review of Reza’s book, this time from one of the faithful, says it “could do with more embodiment and affect and libido altho an interesting read regardless.” if this is the image of thought the CCRU was able to achieve then it wasn’t worth doing. but maybe there is something else, deep in there, still running free. idk.
i want to compare it with the anarchist milieu. sometimes anarchist writing is quite rigorous; Endnotes, Chuang, even Desert pay careful attention to the bibliography. but if you go and read anything on the anarchist library, the scholarship might not get better than Land’s, and it might even get worse. Aragorn! was prone to unargued proclamations like this: “The Russian Revolution was not won with an army; the Bolsheviks filled a power vacuum created by the handling of the German war and missteps of the Provisional Government” (Anarchy & Strategy). is that true? how do you know? well, those sound like provocative questions when i write them like that. but Aragorn! could count on a literate audience, since anarchists debate those events and theories day after day in our practical lives. we have an oral tradition, a shared intellectual context, a way of spreading and innovating on information. this platform can interact with academic literature, but it doesn’t become academic. anarchist pamphlets are written in the imperative mood, or the interrogative. they advise, excite, provoke, challenge a reader who is assumed to be engaged in anarchy. orientation. navigation. songspirals.
conversely, who was Land writing to in the 80s and 90s? the people that read some little journal? people who buy scary books? i understand trying to outrun academia, but why stay an academic? isn’t it just that they all were academics, since they took philosophy when they were 18, and we’re back to facing Nietzsche's prognosis in We Philologists, “A man chooses his calling before he is fitted to exercise his faculty of choice.” or was there some good reason, and something potentially very exciting about the space they had, the milieu, the audience, that made it worth doing? i don’t know, i’d have to read a lot more, or speak to someone who was invovled. things like that. but those are the things i’m thinking about when it comes handling to Nick Land.

Heirs of Tenebris Update
MY TEAM AND I HAVE A PUBLSIHING TIMELINE FOR FIRE & FLIGHT'S SEQUEL, EMBERS OF ETERNITY!🥳🎉
Tumblr media
It's still a little too early for me to feel comfortable sharing the exact date we've chosen for EoE's release day, but I'm just so excited I couldn't wait to blast it all over social media😅 There's still a lot to do, but I'm feeling pretty confident in our timeline because EoE is in proofreading now and book 3 is with my developmental editor so...yeah. I should probably work on my cover reveals, huh?

27 & 30?
Thank you for asking!
27. What do you listen to while writing?
Usually, the little youtube playlist that is a very random bunch of songs I like. Sometimes stations on pandora. And often, I will choose a song and listen to it over and over and over. The song varies. Most recently, it's been Haily Holy Queen from the Sister Act soundtrack.
30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?
When I was working on the redrafting nano project, and *didn't* hate working on it. I was having a lot of fun rewriting and editing, and that's not usually how I feel about it. I am currently unsure if that project will ever be shared/publsihed, but it was surprising.

this is rather specific, but what about an AU where ghostface it's actually a professional photographer and you are one of his models? Like, if he did had this freedom to take any type of picture with you and even be able to publsih them?
Tumblr media
In an AU like this I can see Danny as either a photographer for an important magazine or a freelance photographer that’s favored by more major modeling companies
He has photography issued in Vogue and Cosmopolitan, and makes a decent amount of money from royalties from those alone
He is VERY picky when it comes to his models and is well known in the industry for being one of the most ANNOYING and DIFFICULT photographers to work with
You are his favorite model because you’re always so good at following his directions and handling his comments with little fuss (maybe just a little fuss though because you like to tease him)
He loves to use avant garde shots and has a very particular flare to his photographs and angles that make his work easily recognizable
It involves him getting VERY CLOSE TO YOU doing shooting though
“Move your arms to the left and bend your back more.” “No you look like a fucking spoon, jesus, spread your legs and curl your limbs - yeah like that - no -no the OTHER WAY - yeah perfect. Okay now brush your hair to the side a big - not THAT much fucking hell can you just-!”
Curses a lot on his sets and it startles everyone
He’ll get handsy with you too, using your lack of following instruction as an excuse to touch your body and pull you in the way that he want, purposfully feeling you up the whole time
He’ll wink a lot when you notice and go, “Up for a private photo shoot at my place, dollface~?”
Underwear shots with you are HIS FAVORITE nothing beats being able to photograph you up close in nothing but a smooth pair of lacy panties or handsome boxers
Rumors about your relationship always fly around and the news and press is always all over the two of you
“What do you say doll, wanna make those rumors true?”
A shit eating photographer but good at what he does, and not afraid of being a sassy little shit about it and still get rich off of it
You’re just kind of along for the rIDE
