I really do love how large of a role family plays in the story and the characters’ motivations and personalities. I still feel like we’re in the “early” part of the series, but to be already picking up on so many of these themes and motifs is really cool, and I’m definitely keen to see how they all come to a head in the series.

Final thoughts: This was definitely a lot more interesting than the last volume, and the pace seems to be picking up. I’m still kinda waiting for it to get out of “villain of the week” type plot, but at least we’re getting more depth out of it. Also, it seems like we’ve completely abandoned those twelve coin assassins at this point? There are some things I’m still unsure about, like Y, but I also know that I struggle to pick up on more indirect things in my second language, especially when it’s referencing something that we’re just supposed to figure out. So that’s my assumption on Y, but I still don’t have any ideas on why Wolfwood has such strong ties with it. Also, I feel like my thoughts were pretty short for this volume, but that’s also definitely because there was lots of action and fight scenes this time around, and my brain just kinda shuts off for those lolol

I'll admit, I have a playlist exclusively for songs that remind me of characters from Arcane. For Mel, definitely Stay by Sinead Harnett. Ambessa makes me want to chew through glass. I'm not sure if she's trying to protect Mel, protect her family, or actively sabotage Mel's happiness. She seems to greatly value her family, because everything she does is for them, and she would've given Mel a throne if she could, but she has an absolutely horrid way of showing her love. If you rewatch all her scenes from Ambessa's view instead of Mel or Jayce's view, you begin to understand her a lot better.

I do love Kino so dearly. I love the impact he had on Mel, that despite his antics, both his mother and sister seemed to love him greatly. I envision him with a carefully crafted, devil may care attitude. I think he was sort of the bridge between Mel and Ambessa. He got the love, the respect Mel so desperately wanted from their mother, and in turn, love and respected Mel. I really do hope we get a flashback of him in the next season. I want to know everything about him.

4. Where do I get writing inspiration? Well, between you and I, I have a 37 page document of plots organized by which ship each plot idea is based around. Additionally, when I get an idea, I'll make a pinterest board for it, and refer back to it for visual inspiration while writing. So based on my boards, you can get an idea of things I'm working on. I also get some ideas from really bad shows I watch. For instance, Citadel, The Recruit, or that new movie Ghosted. I didn't think they were good shows, but I think the plot was good enough to make an AU of. So to answer your question, I get inspiration from all over. Some come from the shows/kdrama's I watch. Others come from the garden that is my mind.

-Shu Sakamaki:

Shu is the first born and the heir of the Sakamaki family. Thus, whether he wants it or not, it was decided even before he was born that he will be the victim of a lot of pressure. That pressure to become worthy of being the heir not only came from both of his parents but the servants as well. He couldn’t be free for two seconds. He was obliged to stay inside the castle/mansion (sometimes in the garden with his mom) to study and train, but he wasn’t allowed to go somewhere else. As he lived in a strict environnement, he wasn't happy as a kid and wanted to escape from that life. Meeting Edgar gave him true happiness. He was his first real best friend and he eventually lost him in the flames of his village. Imagine the thing or person who made you discover true happiness burning in front of your own very eyes. You will most likely lose hope in making other close relationship with anything or anyone. That's how Shu is. A depressed, borderline suicidal man who doesn't have any hope anymore and thinks that it is all his fault. Refusing anyone close to him and empty on a daily basis, he uses music as a way to cope with everything. If you think that Shu is easier to love because "he is less harsh than the other brothers" then you are wrong. Shu doesn't want to be involved with anything or anyone. If you try to get close to him, then get ready to be hurt because he is a sadist like his brothers and can hurt you if he doesn't want you near him.

-Reiji Sakamaki:

Reiji was severely neglected as a child by both of his parents. He basically spent his entire childhood trying to get their attention or at least some recognition from them, especially his mom’s, but never got any or if he did it was to remind him that he should be a good younger/brother/servant/right-hand man for his older brother, the next heir of the Sakamaki family Shu. Thus, as he grew up he developed a strong feeling of jealousy for his brother to the point of having a severe inferiority complex. In addition to that, the bitterness that he has for ages inside of him about his mother still resides in him and as we know he is still trying to revive her. Reiji is a man who holds grudges from his past and seeks revenge. He is also someone who loves attention (maybe not as much as Kanato) and wants to be recognized as superior to his brother whom he despises so much to the point that you cannot even talk about Shu around him without having either a death glare or a ass whooping. By putting high standards on to himself, not only in the present but also in his past, he’s become a perfectionist who cares a lot about image and manners. He even forces Yui in his route to learn the perfect lady etiquette. Why does he act this way? Simple, in my opinion it is because he likes to keep a perfect image of himself in a way to detach himself from his brothers whom he despises a lot. You might also ask: if he hates his brothers, then why didn’t he kill them yet? Well, Reiji in one interview (https://prevolt.tumblr.com/post/103068375676/diabolik-lovers-dark-fate-stellaworth-complete )admits that he doesn’t completely hate living with his bros, also if he would’ve killed them, his father would’ve punished him. Even if he seems not that bad with his gentleman personality, Reiji isn’t a kind man. Reiji can easily kill someone. To end this, to go back to the butler-like image he gives himself, I think it could be a mask to hide the insecurities he has. I also believe that he constantly lies to himself and that he doesn’t truly understand his own emotions or even himself has seen many times in his HDB route and in the manga.

-Ayato Sakamaki:

(For Ayato I fell upon this really interesting analysis if you are interested ) 

Ayato, in his childhood, like all of his brothers, was not treated well by his father but he , most importantly, got overpressured by Cordelia to be number one. He couldn’t get out and play freely like any normal child can do because when he would sneak out, he got punished and got slapped in the face by his own mother telling him that if he cannot be number one, he is not allowed to call her “mother” again.(Also, do I need to remind you all the lake scene from his childhood… )For him, you cannot be loved and/or appreciated if you’re not number one. Because he had to live such a childhood, he developed a severe narcissistic personality. Narcissists are not born, they are made, and they are made by being over praised as a kid for their success (such as having a good grade at school, winning a competition or an award, being the best in what they are doing) and by being emotionally neglected. (Ex: throughout the day the child is getting good compliments from their parents by being the number one at school but when the kid will start crying, the parents will ignore or punish him for it. Not giving him any love or support. Which will lead the kid to build himself an ego higher than Yūma’s height and rejecting his own emotions.) I think it describes Ayato’s behaviour and his past pretty well. Another thing that is important to consider about Ayato is that he looks as if he is frozen in time. (Which is a trait that can also be found in any real life narcissists) Even if his mother is dead and that he has nothing to prove anymore, he is still stuck in the “I need to be number one” as if his brain didn’t move on to the present. In addition to that, Ayato is a really childish man. I mean: he needs Yui’s attention and approval all the time, pouts like a kid, acts like a kid (when he asked Yui to stroke his hair in a childish way, plays pranks on Reiji, …) and sometimes speaks like a kid when things are not going the way he wants them to go. Also, once states that he doesn’t wish to have someone special in his life again because the last one who was special (his mom) broke his heart. Ayato himself and himself only and the only goal in his life is to prove that he is the best. To do that, he will use ANY sadistic method and won’t stop even if you beg. Heck, it’ll only excite him more. He is a narcissistic sadist who keeps his emotions far away from him.

-Kanato Sakamaki:

Just like his brother Laito, Kanato throughout his childhood was severely neglected and treated very harshly by both of his parents. The only thing that was valuable to his mother’s eyes was his beautiful voice and literally made him sing until his vocal cords bled. I suspect that Kanato probably suffers from Asperger syndrome from how he acts when he is mad, the fact that he doesn’t understand his or the emotions of others and his overall behaviour. In the present we can all see that he is almost, if not, the scariest of all sakamaki brothers and I think that it is mainly due to the lack of attention and support from his parents. Of all the Sakamaki’s, Kanato is the one who, from very early in his childhood, needed attention and support the most. Why do you think he always has a teddy in his arms (with his mother’s ashes in it must I remind you..)and makes his own doll made out of the body of dead women? Kanato simply cannot stand being alone. He would rather have you dead by his side for all eternity than being rejected or even worse, ignored.(I really recommend to read Kanato’s analysis since it really explains well his behaviour on that aspect^^)

He is maybe cute, remember that he is unable to understand your emotions and that he has no problem killing you. Also to be able to survive with him, you will have to abandon your logic and read in between the lines which isn’t an easy task..(This one is shorter because I think that Kanato isn’t that complex. He is just really different but still stays, in my opinion, pretty simple and easy to understand)

-Laito Sakamaki:

Laito is what I would call an empty pervert who uses sex as a coping mechanism. He believes that there’s nothing more real than pleasure. He even goes further in his “crazy” beliefs that “even the sweetest pain can become the greatest pleasure”. Behind his playful, sociable, perverted personality is a really cruel, cunning and manipulator expert who knows the best tricks to manipulate someone since his mother uses those on him in his “young adulthood” to have sexual intercourses with him. Only used as a sex partner by his mom as a child and never received any unconditional love from his parents, he has a bad definition of love. For him love=lust, real love (true love or even unconditional love) doesn’t exist and that it is all fake. He spends his time having sex to forget about the women that broke him and would even go as far as threatening Yui to death if she resist him when she doesn’t want to get involve in his “activities” or “little games”. But even after all that he can’t forget her and still is captive of her “love”, still feeling her, remembering her scent and everything about her. He can’t escape from that jail. Finally, it’s important to remember that Laito is a sadist who takes an amount of pleasure by having someone succumbing to him in a mental and sexual way. He is not someone to be taken lightly. You might not see the danger totally at first by that’s just how Laito is. He even says it himself in his HDB route, he is the type of man who will follow his prey in an alley before attacking it. Therefore, he is not like most of his brothers, he is not going to attack fully. He’s slowly going to take little bites of you and before you even realize it, you won’t be able to escape from him anymore.

-Subaru Sakamaki:

First of all, we need to know that Subaru was born (just like almost all of his brothers) just for the sake of Karl’s plan. What is different about Subaru is that his mother became crazy when she had her child. (I just want to state that she did want the child and Karlheinz did not totally raped her since it is stated that she accepted but we also all know that she was being manipulated. Since for the moment I want to concentrate more on Subaru I will not spend too much time explaining his parents relationship but it is something that we should definitely analyse as well in my opinion) Subaru was severely neglected by his father and he never knew what it was to have a normal mother. Throughout his entire childhood, he’s witnessed his mother’s unstable mind, bipolarity, her tantrums episodes and even worse, not only her insults being thrown directly at him but her literally asking him to kill both her and Karl. Because of that, he’s developed anger issues, a lack of trust with women, a severe depression and he is, if not, borderline suicidal. I also want to state that (He even states in his route in HDB that the two people he hates the most in “this world” is 1) Karlheinz 2)himself)Subaru is one if not the most sensible emotionally. So that means he feels harder than the others. You can also see that he has developed similar traits has his mother has you get to know him more in his route such as: bipolarity (when he orders Yui to always come and tell him where she’s going and then get mad when she does so telling her that he doesn’t care) and random tantrums. (when he gets mad à Yui for no good reason and even makes false assumptions) Not only does he usuels violence as a coping mechanism but he also always isolates himself, not letting anyone in his hard shell because he believes that he can’t do any good and that he is useless. In his presents, he still believes in his mother’s insults and thinks of him as someone filthy, disgusting, weak, a monster who can’t do anything to help the person he loved, his mother. He hates himself. He is constantly irritated by everything. If you want to love him you will have to endure the violence that he’s going to give to you and live with his confusion and irritation against not only everything that surrounds him but also against himself and you, and you will have to give up your life to make him trust you entirely.

The elevator slows to a halt, only one floor away from Kino’s destination - the sixth floor, where his dorm is situated. After stopping by the vending machines on the eleventh floor, his hands are now full of Doritos (his favorite late-night snack). He’s ready to binge-watch a few more episodes of Forensic Files and nothing can stop him.

Except her.

The doors slide open to reveal her image, and he’s taken aback for more than one reason. Not only is it unusual that he would see her in this dorm building (and well past midnight), but there’s clearly something wrong. He can tell from her disheveled hair and dripping wet dress.

“_____?” He murmurs her name, and she looks up at him, clearly just as surprised as he.

“Kino…” She sounds weak, defeated.

This isn’t right. He’s never seen her so distraught. Frowning worriedly, he offers, “Do you want to come over?” No matter what put her in this state, he needs to be there for her. She’s one of Kino’s best friends; of course he wants to take care of her.

With a gentle nod, she steps onto the elevator. She seems a little wobbly, and she smells faintly of liquor. Kino is about to reach out and steady her when she leans back against the wall of the elevator, supporting herself.

Kino suddenly remembers his last encounter with her drunken self - that explicit voicemail she left when she thought she had dialed someone else. Even though she made it clear that the message wasn’t meant for him, he has to wonder how things could be different if it had been his.

What if she had meant everything she said in that voicemail, and she was as hopelessly attracted to him as the voicemail made her sound? How would he have responded then?

He doesn’t know.

She’s certainly cute. That much is undeniable. And she’s incredibly easy to get along with. Kino had so much fun with her at karaoke, and she’s definitely one of the better friends he’s made at university.

But when it comes to more than friendship, he’s just not sure what he would want. He hasn’t really thought about it too much because he doesn’t want to risk losing her friendship.

Kino lets her into the dorm, quietly letting her know that his roommate is asleep in their shared bedroom. “You don’t have to whisper, though. He’s a heavy sleeper, and you can’t hear much in there when the door is closed.”

She just nods, slipping out of her heels. “Can I use your bathroom?”

“Of course,” Kino immediately responds, but then he holds up a finger. “Actually, hold on a sec.”

He slips into the bedroom for a moment and digs around in the pitch black for a t-shirt and shorts. Her dress is completely wet and can’t possibly be comfortable, so the least he can do is give her something else to wear.

She gratefully accepts his clothing, and she’s in the bathroom just long enough to make him worry if she’s doing alright. But just as he’s about to check in on her, she reemerges.

“Kinooooo…” She groans as she comes into the living room, plopping down on the couch next to him. She leans over, resting her head on his shoulder and tucking her legs up onto the couch. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have cancelled our plans.”

Is that what’s bothering her? ��It’s okay. I know that stuff comes up.” He doesn’t know exactly why she cancelled, but that doesn’t really matter. She hadn’t said much, just that she needed a raincheck for tonight.

Suddenly she sits up and looks right at him. “It was a shit night, Kino, and we would have had fun. We would have had so much fun, and I just want to eat barbecue - God I could go for some barbecue right now…”

Kino frowns. So something else is wrong. “What happened? Do you want to talk about it?”

Dramatically, she collapses back onto the couch. “I made out with Wooseok.”

What?

The sudden confession catches him entirely off guard. He’s aware that she’s been tutoring him, but he didn’t realize that they were close. Or that she was into him.

The most confusing part of it all, though, is the fact that he feels distinctly disappointed.

“You did?” He tries to sound unfazed, but he’s not sure if he’s convincing. “I… didn’t realize you liked him.”

“I don’t know if I do.” She sighs. “I don’t know what to think. It was sort of an accident.”

Kino’s caring-mode goes into overdrive. “Did he force himself on you?”

“No! No. It’s… I wanted to. I just… ugh I’m so tired. Can I stay over?”

He doesn’t hesitate to nod. “Yeah, of course you can stay. But I need you to drink some water before you go to sleep, okay?” She doesn’t seem out-of-her-wits drunk, but he needs to make sure that he’s at least somewhat hydrated so she doesn’t feel like death in the morning.

“What about some more tequila?” She giggles, grabbing his arm playfully.

“No.” He laughs, unable to be stern with her. “You need water.”

“Ugh, I knowww… That’s why my dress is wet.”

Kino gets up from the couch to fetch her some water. “What happened with that, anyway?”

“I did the same thing you’re doing now.” She padded behind him, following him into the kitchen, watching him fill the glass. “I told Wooseok we needed some water, but neither one of us finished, and so we just put the cups on the counter, and then he put me on the counter, and then he took off my underwear and-”

“Whoa! I don’t need all the details.” Kino interrupts her, not really wanting to hear any more of her ramblings about Wooseok and what he did or didn’t do to her tonight. He holds out the water to her. “Drink.”

She gulped it down way too fast, handing back the empty cup. “There. I did it.”

“I’m proud of you.” Kino places the cup in the sink to be washed at a later time, and then he grabs his collection of Doritos from the counter. “I know it’s not barbecue, but do you want some chips?”

“Hell yeah I want some chips.” Like a vulture, she swoops in, grabbing one of the snack-size bags from Kino’s hands. “Why do you have so many?”

Shrugging, Kino leads the way back to the couch. “I just like them.”

Mid-crunch, she blabs, “They’re goooood.” Without any sort of prompting, she reclines across the couch, resting the back of her head on Kino’s thigh.

He just chuckles. “Please, make yourself at home.”

She gives him a stupid smile and shoves another chip in her mouth. “Hey, Kino… Have you had your heart broken before?”

The question catches him off guard, but he thinks for a moment. “Yeah, but it wasn’t really a big deal. It just felt like the worst thing in the world at the time. But that was years ago, so…”

“What happened?”

He looks down at her, innocently munching on her cheesy chips. “I had a crush in high school, and when I confessed they just laughed at me.”

She frowns. “That wasn’t very nice of them.”

“It’s whatever. I went on to have other relationships and it wasn’t really a big deal.”

“You’re probably too good for them, anyway. You’re so fun. And talented. And clever. They probably had zero personality and a poo brain.”

Kino laughs warmly. “A poo brain?”

“You heard me.”

“That’s very sweet of you.”

Without thinking, Kino’s non-cheesy hand comes to rest on his lap, his fingers gently stroking her hair. He just feels so comfortable being close with her that he doesn’t even realize it might be a weird gesture.

“Mm.” She hums softly, closing her eyes. “That’s nice.”

“You like it?” He drags his fingers across her scalp.

“Mhm.” Her whole face relaxes for just a moment, and then she frowns slightly. “I think he has a girlfriend.”

“Who does?”

“The guy I like. Liked. I don’t know.”

“…The guy from the voicemail?”

She nods, eyes finally coming open. “I saw him tonight and it was awful.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No, it’s a secret.”

Kino’s hand passes over her hair one more time, enjoying the feel of it. “I’m sorry that it was so awful. You’re probably too good for him, too. Clearly he’s got a severe case of poo brain if he picked someone else over you.”

Her laughter is sweet and bright, and it warms him. He’s always glad when he can make her laugh and lift her spirits. She murmurs, “Yeah, Professor Poo Brain.”

“Professor?” His hand pauses. She couldn’t mean that literally… right?

“Yeah he teaches his little poo brain class, he doesn’t even know how to add…”

What the hell is she talking about? “You’re not making any sense.”

She waves her hands, brushing him off. “It’s okay. It’s a secret. I want to sleep now.”

Kino desperately hopes that it’s just the alcohol making her spew nonsense. There’s no way she could be wrapped up in something with a professor…

Good Stuff: Next Gen

A Friendship From the Future

Netflix has been giving quite a lot of outside media that’s been pretty good, guess they’re making up for their crimes last year. Next Gen is a movie developed by the creator of Chinese rage comics, no joke, and directed by the art directors of a couple good movies and a few nobody cares about. But really, in this world of robots, does this movie make the future look bright, or does it feel outdated compared to the likes of Iron Giant, Short Circuit, Big Hero Six, and the sort this is basically inspired by? Well, like the rage comic this was based on, I was pretty entertained.

First, this movie honestly puts the pedal to the figurative medal. In the first 10 minutes, we get everything we need to know this movie: the setting, the main character Mai, her motive towards her robot hate, her neglectful mom, David Cross, the villain, the robot friend. It felt refreshing, colgate like, but... *sigh* in comes my critical mind. This movie ain’t bad, but man it feels *grits teeth* predictable. The futuristic setting looked uninspiring. The man-bun dude was such a “villain”, that his big reveal at the end was visually shocking but kinda laughable. It was clear that Mai’s mother was gonna start loving her daughter more near the end. The bullies were gonna fear her thanks to her giant robot but then she sees that becoming a bully is no better than being bullied (angerleads to suffering). Not saying I didn’t enjoy myself, in fact it has some great things going for it, but it was hard not to figure out what would happen exactly how it could happen.

Though the first explosive action scene being a highspeed chase to return a girl’s backpack was certainly surprising

But really, this movie is cool. The animation is the right amount of cartoonish, beautiful, and blunt, with a few actually creepy scenes. The energy it has kept me invested, especially when one of your scenes has the main characters fighting a damn toothbrush. I would try to make comparisons to other kid and their robot movies, but I say this is somewhat unique in its main character and her robot friend (plus Big Hero 6 is whatever). Mei, with Charlene Yi providing a great voice, is a character that genuinely goes through a struggle in this movie. She doesn’t come off as an intolerable or brooding jerk, more of a character that’s rightfully letting out her frustrations and is trying to cope with her uncontained anger, like EQG’s Sunset Shimmer pre-redemption. I’ll say her arc is predictable, but seeing her get bullied to then use what she loathes the most as a vessel for payback, delinquent fun, and an eventual soul savior was honestly a delight to see. As for the robot, while I will say he would’ve worked a bit better if he didn’t talk as much, is surprisingly great in the fact that he kicks ass and looks good doing it; his design is simple yet effective (yet how was able to be activated by accident). He’s the rock to Mai’s eagle like aspirations, and the VA did make his moments have weight. Their dynamic is what few might call ‘standard’, but I say it’s still effective with what was given. Hell, the climax genuinely consists of the two having emotions and kicking robot ass up to a climatic 1v1 in space that was just *MWAH* quality anime kino. With the animation looking better than I expected, especially a couple scenes that were really beautiful, I thoroughly enjoyed them together and I wouldn’t mind watching this again.

These two are certainly the highlight of this film

Hate doing this, but I gotta give Next Gen (-300) points for being pretty predictable in its narrative, (-200) points for I could not care less about the villain, and (-300) points for the useless talking dog (sorry, not a fan of him). But I wanna give it (+1000) points for being a movie based on a webcomic dosed in meme culture, (+800) points for having some superb animation especially with its action scenes, a bonus (+300) points for the great action, and a solid (+777) points for the dynamic between Mai and her robot, they are what makes this film great out of everything. I say it’s a film worth watching if you’re in the mood for an easy kick ass adventure with a rebel girl and her killer machine friend. Sure it has elements from movies with similar premises, but this still stands out well and I appreciate that.

Therefore, I believe that you must first learn to accept your own powers and see them in a positive light.

Reiji: Then how about you simply suck it up and rely on your brothers if you have zero motivation to change yourself anyway?

Laito: Haah...What a pain...I can’t believe I have to deal with these Demon geezers...

Reiji: If you leave this situation be, those aiming to take your powers will appear in rapid succession. 

This is an issue which comes before saving her.

Subaru: ーー Actually, won’t we get infected by the bad air? Can we really just go there unprotected? 

Reiji: Good grief. You still believe in such superstition?

Subaru: Ah? Superstition?

Laito: Nfu~ Exactly, Subaru-kun. The air isn’t contagious.

Kanato: But hold on. That guy is a Vampire, isn’t he?

For a Vampire to be born on Ghoul territory, does that mean that there are female Vampires living there?

( They look very stern as well...I’m sure they’re worried that something will happen to the one place they can call home. )

Subaru: ーー You say that now...But I bet you’re hopin’ we’ll let down our guard so you can turn the tables on us, aren’t you? But that won’t work!? 

Yui: ...!! S-Subaru-kun!! Let’s just go already!!

ー Yui runs up ahead

Laito: Bitch-chan? 

Yui: It’s fine. Don’t worry. ...Come on, he let me return, see?

Laito: ...?

Yui: ( If a fight breaks out here, it’ll only cause trouble for the Ghouls... )

Ghoul Girl A: ーー Miss!!

Yui: Eh!?

*Rustle*

Yui: ( This girl...She’s the one who gave me flowers the other dayーー )

Ghoul Girl A: ...

Laito: ...That girl’s really glaring at me for some reason...

Yui: Um, this girlーー

Ghoul Girl A: This lady...is very important to Kino-sama...!

Laito: ...Eh!? 

Yui: ...Come on, be good now. Go back to your mother, okay? I’m just fine?

Ghoul Girl A: Really? 

Yui: Yeah...!

Ghoul Girl A: ーー Okay...

ー The young Ghoul leaves again

Laito: ...Are you done here? 

Yui: Yeah, it’s fine now. Let’s head back home?

Laito: ...You seem kind of in a rush? 

Yui: Eh? I’m not?

( Rather than in a rush, it makes my heart ache...I meanーー )

( The Ghouls aren’t allowed to leave this area. )

Laito: ーー Let’s head back to Eden then. 

Yui: Eh? Eden?

Ayato: Well, we’ll explain everything to you on the way there.

Yui: Okay, gotcha...

Laito: You sound a bit upset? 

Yui: You think so? I think you’re just imagining it...

( I guess he caught on to it after all. ...Butーー )

Ghoul Girl A: ...Kino-sama, did I do well? 

Kino: ...Yeah. Perfect. Here you go...The Konpeito (2) I promised. 

*Rustle* 

Ghoul Girl A: Thank you very much!!

Kino: I guess now we can just wait and let time do its thing.

Yuuri: We had one of our spies infiltrate their Familiars. 

Kino: Yeah. Thanks!

( ...Well then, I wonder what she’ll do next? I can’t wait. )

( Either way, cracks will start showing in their bond. That’s where I’ll find an opening to strikeーー )

Honestly...I’m glad girls like her are so easy to figure out. Hehe.

Brain : no, I drew and animated all day at work I don’t wanna. 

me : Okay...then, what about writing the next part of our current fic ?

Brain : it implies being sit in front of computer right ? Our back hurt for month, I just want to lie down. 

me : okay then video games in bed ?

Brain : Yeah. 

*ends up writing a whole scene that has nothing to do with anything and spends two hours sitting with her back hurting*

me : WHY ???

brain : I DOn’T KnOW JuST DO As I SAY !

So here; gift. 

“As you all know, heroes business is oversaturated. There are too many heroes on the market and it’s hard to make your own name. Now that the policy of the hero business is team work, since the fall of All might, this is even truer than before. You might all hope to become the next Deku, but there a thousand who dreams like you, and only one get the spot.”

Well, thought Satoru ; that was harsh. True, yes, but still. It wasn’t because it was the truth that it was worth saying ; especially to a bunch of teenagers who were currently studying in hero course. But he supposed that this “teacher” was somewhat special. She wasn’t even a teacher, just a ex-hero that UA invited to help supervise on the mental health of it students on regular basis apparently. If someone asked Satoru about it, he would say she did a terrible job.

Peacemaker, as it was her ex-hero name, and the only name that most of the student could pronounce right, looked as f she had just came out from the hospital, with the right part of her face paralyzed. Her face was awfully scared, and she was missing half of her right ear, and scalp, and missing her right leg. She introduced herself, days ago, by saying “this is what happen when you go fight alone against a bunch of villains and you loose”. The dark tone of her lessons was already here. But there was always a moral, a point, behind each one of his session. So Satoru waited for this one.

“What i mean by that, resumed Peacemakers, as she used her cane to support her body’s weight, is that it’s really hard for new heroes to distinguish themselves. You need to have something special to really stand out and succeed.”

Most of the students in class nodded as she gave them a printed piece of paper. Well except Lazare, who sneezed right into it and looked with pure disgust as he saw the mess he had made.

“What makes you special can be your talent, your quirk, or your looks, let’s be honest here, explained Peacemaker with a sigh, as she handled him a new piece of paper. -But, if i were you, i would rather bet on more...easier to control, particularity. Anyone has any idea of what i’m talking about ?”

“A special move ! Immediately stated Yosuke, proudly. -Like Satoru’s “All is one” move !”

Satoru blushed at the mention of his name, and even more when he heard the “name” that his classmates gave to his special move. It sounded like All might and Izuku’s quirk ; even if they didn't’ know, he did, and so all of his parent’s friends. It was awfully pretentious to even think he could come close to their level !

Though, Peacemakers didn’t seem to be chocked by that and simply half smiled.

“This is indeed a way, but you will, luckily, all get to develop your own special move during the three years you will spend in UA. As you will develop your quirk. So you will all be at the same “virtual” level once you graduate. So. How will you stand out among your peers ?”

Silence followed, as students looked at each other puzzled. Satoru frowned, trying to find the solution, but, sincerely, he had no clue at all. What made a hero popular ? Surely, looks and charisma. But that was not always true. All might wasn’t that good looking, neither was Izuku. Yet they all rose above the rest and earned the number one spot rank. Power ? Surely, but lot of heroes had quirk that were just more...not powerful but showy, than their. Yet they were outshined by such a simple power as “super strength”. Not that Izuku’s power was lame -Satoru would dream to have something close to that- but it was certainly not original nor flashy. It was the way they used it that-

Oh.

“How your use your power ?” He said to Peacemaker.

The ex-hero stopped, and stared a moment at Satoru, before nodding with her half-smile:

“Close call, but no.”

Well. he tried. Some whispers behind his back made him realize that every one of his classmates were counting on him to find the answer for them, and that they just gave up. So did Peacemaker, probably; because she explained :

“It is principles. A line of work : a sense of purpose, call it as you want it. Whatever floats your boat. And this is what i want you to think about for next lesson. You will write down an short essay on what kind of hero you want to be in the future.”

She pointed the piece of paper she handled, on which there were only a couple of questions like “how do you want to be viewed ?” ; “do you have a motto ?”  and such. probably to help student figures out the image they wanted to build.

It didn’t.

“What kind of hero i want to be?”

The question kept coming back and forth as he stared at the plain ceiling of his room. The deadline was coming closer and closer and Satoru was still unsure of himself. He asked his dad and mom about it, through phone call...but their answer didn’t help much, well...Mainly because it sounded :

“I wanted to be hero worth of respect, unlike my father at the time” or “I wanted to unite heroes under one flag so that our peace symbol would never crumble again”. Outdated, great, admirable...There were many way to call those reasons, but Satoru couldn’t say it was his own.

Why was he even in the hero course? He thought immediately, as doubt made his way to his brain. Immediately, he answered : “To become the greatest duo of hero with Mahô” but again, it sounded fake. It wasn’t his reason, it was their. And Mahô wanted to be a hero for a whole different reason on her own.

“I want to be a hero that makes miracles ! One hero that, when you see them enter the fight, you expect them to turn the tide, one that make you want to get up and fight again because you know you can do it if they are here !”

Which was very Mahô’s. And also very brave and cool, he wished he could have thought of that before. She could probably do it, unlike him. When he was beside her, he certainly felt that way, and sometimes, when they fought together during Kirishima’s duel club, he certainly felt like he was doing miracle with her. Heck, she even managed to make Endeavor see her as a serious opponent in their fight during the festival ! If someone could achieve this, it was probably Mahô. But not Satoru.

But again, was it the kind of hero he wanted to be?

“URGH ! THIS IS SO COMPLICATED!” He screamed into his pillow.

He decided to stop complaining without any chance to get over it, and left the bed. Surely, someone would be willing to help at the common area. After all they needed to return the paper for tomorrow first hour.

Satoru didn’t expect to find half of his class B...and half ot class A, stucked and stressed together, screaming about that damn essay.

“She said Short essay, but what is short exactly ? was panicking Kahei, writing frantically.

-I don’t know, i would say, one page ? Answered Kino with the face of someone who hadn’t sleep for days.

-I know, what about you use your power to turn into the me of ten years in the future, so he can say to me what’s his motive, suddenly asked Arya.

-For the last time Arya ; that’s not how my power work, i’m still me when i turn into your future version!

-Yes but then you have dreams about the future, right?

-And in the extreme case you’re lucky i dream about this subject specifically, when do you find the time to write your essay ? While we eat breakfast tomorrow?”

Arya groaned as her head hit the table, drawn back to reality.

“So many people are clueless about it?”

This realization made him feel a little bit better, but he definitely pushed aside this selfish satisfaction : he shouldn't be happy about his classmates’s troubles. (But he kind did anyways). Instead of taking a seat in the middle of the storm, he sat in the couch, where people watched the mess from distance. Tsubaki, his friend, was among them.

“You already did the essay ? What did you write?”

Silently -as always- His friend pulled out of his pocket a folded piece of paper. All Satoru could read on it was:  “I want to be a silent hero”.

Well. That was short. He sure hoped for Tsubaki’s sake that it would not be graded.

“I wrote that i wanted to be a hero my little brother would be proud to call his brother, i hope it’s okay, it sound a bit lame…” Added Goro, suddenly appearing behind Satoru’s back.

His heart leaped in his chest. Dang. He wished the boy could stop doing that. But unfortunately he seemed quite good at appearing out of nowhere ; despite the fact that it was Kyouji who had the astral projection / ghostly quirk, not the bunny boy !

“I don’t think so, th-that’s cute of you...It sounds like my papa’s reason to be a hero...” He explained, as he looked away, feeling his blush reaching his ears.

Goro grinned. And gods, what his smile made to Satoru’s heart, that was embarrassing. He tried to think of something else, in vain.

“Thanks Satoru it’s nice to cheer me up, but it lacks a bit, you know...mondial feel to it, right ?”

Among the working student, Max suddenly stood up, screamed, spilling wax all over, and his fire growing dangerously. Then he sat back silent as if nothing happened.

“This is scary, simply stated Goro.

-Don’t talk about world around Max...His mother is a diplomat, she kinda put pressure on him about how the world will interpret their every move. It’s like a trigger word for him, Satoru explained.

-This is scary, repeated Goro.”

He couldn’t agree more. Satoru started working, though, as his homework would not be done by itself -unlike mahô’s. Some only had redaction problems related and found it difficult to put into words their ideas, and he helped them a bit. That was simple, easy, he did that a lot when Mahô thought about her next enchantment.

Ume wanted to be a hero that made everyone thinking their worth her time, which was such a wonderful idea. But she had troubles to find the right word and it took them half an hour to write it down.

Takashi, though he had a clear vision of what he wanted to be like, was too eager to put example rather than give a clear statement. In the end, they decided on this : “A model hero ; an example of morality”. Which started an argument between him and his step-sister - and gave a reason to satoru to gently step away.

At one point, he offered his classmates a gigantic brainstorm, hoping it would help everyone who, as him, just didn’t know what to do. It ended up in a mess.  When Mahô came back from her special training, at 10:30 PM, they were still on it. And when she returned from her bath, none of them had made any progress.

“Wow guys you’re just too tense, just write whatever comes to your mind, i mean it’s supposed to come from the heart right ?” She said as she took a bit of what was left of the diner.

“You’re right Mahô, you’re totally right! This is so obvious, why didn’t i think of it sooner?”

Yuu stood up, looking dead serious and determined as she took her pencil and brandished it like a sword.

“I’m gonna be a cupidon hero ! The protector of the lovers, the instigator of the greatest love stories ever ! I will make every one and-

-And what you’re gonna make the villains kiss and apologize like children ? Mocked Kahei.”

That didn’t end well; the two girls almost fought right here and now. While Mahô just laughed and said : “Sound cool : i didn’t know you could do that as a hero !” which was, somehow an hasher remark. At least from Satoru’s point of view. Finally, Yuu decided to indeed go for this, adding just a part that sounded like Ume, about giving helping people who felt all alone and unable to love. It might be only a desperate chance because she was tired and done and just wanted to go to bed at this point, but Satoru still found it pretty great. It fit the lovely girl he knew.

The common area was getting lonelier and lonelier, as his classmates found their reason, bullshitted their essay or just simply gave up. And before Satoru knew it, he found himself be almost alone, with only Mahô and a couple of others who were playing video games on the couch. Damn, he wanted to join them and forget this essay : but he couldn’t. His only asset in UA were his grades, he couldn’t afford to get a bad mark.

“I don’t know why it’s so hard for you, don’t you already know what you want to be? asked Mahô, as she enchanted her pencils and papers so it could do her other homework while she slept.”

“I’m not as confident as you, you know…Mahô.

-Well, i will be confident enough for both of us then.

-This isn’t something we can do together. I mean, yeah i want to be a your partner and become the greatest hero duo ever, but myself ? I don’t know. You need two great hero to make a duo, not one and a half !

-Why are you even talking about us? Sure i invited you in my dream when we were kids, but you wanted to be a hero back then, right ?”

Silence. Mahô’s face lost all its color as she looked shocked.

“You didn’t?! Did i force this on you?”

She seemed so lost, Satoru immediately tried to comfort her, and words spurted out of his mouth before he realized :

“No of course not! I wanted to be a hero of course ! But i couldn’t believe someone like me could ever achieve that alone!”

Mahô sighed in relief, and immediatly found back her smile as she whispered :

“Soooo- why did you want to be a hero back then?”

Satoru shut up. He didn’t know how much she manipulated him in order to get this embarrassing confession -and he doubted she even did it on purpose. But yet…Yet it worked.

“I suppose...i wanted to be like Shouto.”

Mahô nodded vigorously.

“Yeah ! We both want to be like our dad, right? That’s a given, they’re so awesome!”

Satoru nodded, another thought running through him. Yes they were : but what made them awesome in their eyes? What made them want to be like them? For once, the answer came easily.

“He picked me up. He gave me a place when i was the world didn’t have one for me.”

He remembered the moment as he sat in the police interrogation room, where Naomasa explained him that Satoru didn’t even exist in regard of the law, because he had no birth certificate. Back then he thought it was stupid : he was there, so how could the world deny even his own existence? Shouto reached for him, and made sure that he saw him and cared. Shouto saved him.

But how many people were like him, back then? Like Big Mother and Death-pair? Thinking that they had no choice but to follow the path in front of them? Thinking that the world didn’t want them? When tomorrow held nothing for you, and you didn’t have even one bit of curiosity or care about what the future could hold. He knew how dreading this feeling could get, how desperate it got, when you wished nothing, hoped for nothing, only surviving, existing but with no purpose. To the point, that one day, you would just wish you could even stop doing that.

Who would save them, then? Shouto couldn’t adopt every lost kid in the world. Neither could he. And some of them were adults already, like big Mother and Death-pair were. He couldn’t give up on them just because they were older, right ? It didn’t sound right or fair. They deserved a place. Everybody deserved one.

He rose his eyes and met Mahô’s, bright and proud, as if she knew that he had found his answer.

One day, they will be a duo. She was sure of that, Satoru still had doubt, but he had decided a long time ago to trust his friend. His confidence wasn’t as reliable as her. But she was also too rash and often forgot details. She liked to go past her limit, and sure she wanted to save people; but she liked fights too much. She would never care about such tiny details as care about her opponent, or people that were not in front of her. That would be Satoru’s job. He would. It would be his role, his place in the duo.

With a bit of a smile, he started to write down the first sentence of his essay :

“I want to be a hero that will save everyone, even villains and people forgotten by society.

The title character (played by Cannes-honored director and onetime Queen of Mars Yulia Solntseva) is the object of affection for three very different men: a silly bookkeeper, a handsome cameraman and an American businessman in Russia.

No Smoking

Even if we know that Russian films were not strictly propaganda, many do incorporate political elements into non-political stories. For example, The Girl with the Hat Box and The House on Trubnaya dealt with housing shortages and unionizing domestic workers. The Cigarette Girl of Mosselprom is different in that politics are left at the door and the story could have just as easily been set in New York or Paris or Berlin of the 1920s. Still, the film does manage to include some distinctly Russian flourishes.

And, of course, Lenin’s face on your sink’s backsplash.

Before starting, it’s worth mentioning that The Cigarette Girl of Mosselprom uses the same lead performers and possibly even the same costume designer as Aelita, the iconic Soviet science-fiction hybrid. Aelita’s cinematographer, Yuri Zhelyabuzhsky, takes the helm as director and the action remains decidedly earthbound.

(By the way, when you run into a Romanized name with the letter combination ZH, it stands for the Cyrillic letter Ж and is pronounced like the “s” in treasure or pleasure. All those Zs can look intimidating but it’s really quite easy when you break it down. If you can say “Frappuccino” then you can say “Zhelyabuzhsky”.)

If she sold candy, Nikodim would have diabetes in a week.

Everything in the film revolves around Zina (Yuliya Solntseva), a cigarette street vendor. Mosselprom was the Moscow Rural Cooperative Administration, which dealt in assorted consumer products including cigarettes. (Check out some vintage ads here.) By the way, the Mosselprom building still stands, though I don’t think it was quite finished when this film was made. (The construction was quite torturous, I believe.)

Zina quickly attracts the attention of three men. The first is Nikodim Mityushin played by popular Russian comedian Igor Ilyinsky, who specialized in playing silly little men given to panic and tantrums. Nikodim has been buying cigarettes from Zina daily—despite the fact that he does not smoke! He also does not notice that his co-worker Maria (Anna Dmokhovskaya) is madly in love with him.

MacBride attempts flirtation by translation.

The second man is Oliver MacBride (M. Tsybulsky), an American businessman who hopes to open a high end ready-to-wear fashion house in Moscow. He hopes to hire Zina as a clothing model and perhaps something more.

Finally, we have Latugin (Nikolai Tsereteli), a cameraman working on a major film. He immediately realizes that Zina is played by Yuliya Solntseva and pressures the reluctant director to hire her in a major role. Based on their shared love of cloth caps, Zina and Latugin fall head over heels in love and this is where the troubles begin.

Latugin is too distracted to actually shoot a picture. Nikodim, meanwhile, has decided to style himself a screenwriter in order to get Zina to notice him and that would be fine if he didn’t insist on acting out his eccentric scenarios in the bookkeeping office that employs him.

If there is one lesson to be found in The Cigarette Girl of Mosselprom, it is that people in love are a pain in the rear and, also, never hire Nikodim as a translator if you hope to pitch woo to the woman he loves.

We’re making a film here!

I liked Nikodim a lot more than he probably deserved but, hey, I do love a nice helping of Ilyinsky, especially when he is this zany and fussy. The Guy Who Won’t Take No for an Answer is a pretty squicky trope under normal circumstances but that’s not really what’s going on here as Zina does continue to encourage him. And at least he is called out for his behavior here and even temporarily tries to mend his ways. And, again, the actor playing the character is so cute that it’s difficult to stay angry at him for his antics.

Latugin and Zina are caught in the old romance two-step in which the partners take turns being angry and feeling betrayed and instigating the breakup. Of course, the cameraman is the most dashing of the trio of suitors. I see what you did there, veteran-cameraman-turned-director Mr. Zhelyabuzhsky.

Putting your crush in pictures: the oldest love story in film.

MacBride, meanwhile, is really just a typical American mogul as portrayed in European films of the period. Compare him to Mr. Quaker in The Oyster Princess: corpulent, out of touch, smokes like a train, can’t make a move without an army of retainers. The image was most definitely fixed in the public mind thanks to real-life sybarites like Diamond Jim Brady.

Zina is pragmatic and refreshingly unconcerned with marriage (a common trait of Russian women in rom-coms of this era) and is just a interested in securing a more comfortable profession as she is in courtship with Latugin. And, of course, Yuliya Solntseva is both attractive and charismatic enough to make the feelings of her three suitors understandable even if their behavior is eccentric. (Oddly enough, MacBride, the character who runs closest to outright caricature, conducts himself most normally.)

MacBride makes his move.

Solntseva left acting a few years later to support the work of her husband, director Alexander Dovzhenko. She was honored in her own right at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival when she won Best Director, the first woman to do so and, until 2017 when she was joined by Sofia Coppola, the only woman to do so.

Zina’s costumes are one of the major draws of the picture. While audiences of the day likely delighted in her flowing frocks when she was an actress and her high fashion drama when she was a model, modern viewers (at least the ones I have discussed this with) are absolutely delighted by her simple, modern garb as a cigarette seller. Her Mosselprom cap with the short visor and her simple short-sleeved blouse could be the very next trend in ladies fashion. Somebody call Oliver MacBride.

10/10 would wear

Finally, I very much enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at a busy Russian film studio during the 1920s. The film also explores the politics of films with Latugin’s director going behind his back to get him fired and scheming to remove Zina as well.

Zhelyabuzhsky’s direction is pretty spot-on for 1924. It’s not as cutting-edge as what the Russian directors in Paris were accomplishing at the time but it gives the viewer a good taste of the flavor of 1924 Moscow and the film’s somewhat leisurely pace lets us take it all in.

While this is a fine film and sure to entertain, it does miss that little mischievous wink that makes Boris Barnet comedies such delights. It is self-aware about the odd behavior of its characters but a few more pokes at their self-absorption would have done much.

The Cigarette Girl of Mosselprom has a more, er, European pace than Barnet’s comedies but it does have plenty of pleasures, especially Ilyinsky and Solntseva. The screenplay also displays enough self-awareness to prevent the antics of its cast from wearing out their welcome. Further, the shots of Moscow are stunning and you will covet one or more hats from this production.

Considering I watched a frankly ridiculous 58 anime from last year, I thought I would put it to somewhat good use, so

My Top 10 Anime of 2017 with comments on each:

10. Onihei

A bit of a dark horse for the year as I actually don’t think I saw ANYONE so much as mention this show. It’s definitely one of the darker titles on my list, bringing up torture, murder, and rape very early on, but overall it was very enjoyable. Being an episodic show, it was interesting to see what it would bring each week, and the historical setting and style of narrative filled the hole in my heart left by my #1 show having ended in the previous season.

9. Children of the Whales

I loved this show right from episode 1, with its very intriguing world building, very likable characters, and absolutely gorgeous art style. The show only got better as it went on and was extremely interesting all the while. I’ve also talked a bit previously about how, despite having very different plots, the themes and narrative style reminded me quite a bit of No.6. This was definitely an underrated show for the year and the only reason it’s not higher on my list is due to its “wait for season 2” ending.

8. Inuyashiki

A bit of a surprise entry. Despite my general love of sci-fi, I really didn’t expect to like this show due to my knowledge of the author’s previous works and I initially completely wrote it off my watch list entirely. This wasn’t helped by most of the opening episode being VERY depressing, but the show quickly picked up, taking the story in a much more hopeful direction. The morally grey antagonist was really interesting to watch and all of the action scenes were fantastic. The only things really lowering this were that the characters felt one-dimensional, the plot was a bit predictable, and the CG used for the mechanical scenes was quite conspicuous, but those didn’t hamper the show from being really fun overall.

Also I fucking love the opening.

7. ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka

Another mostly episodic show, ACCA was largely really fun due to how varied the episodes could be. There’s not a lot to say about it as it was quite simplistic, but the characters were all wonderful, the overarching plot was interesting to watch unfold, and everything came together very nicely at the end. As well, the show had a great soundtrack and was just very fun and relaxing to watch.

6. Seikaisuru Kado

I wanted so so so much for this series to end up higher on my list, I really did, but unfortunately it suffers from a frankly horrible last episode, ye be warned. It had some of the best 3DCG animation we’ve seen in anime thus far (emphasized by the fact that it aired on the same day as the butt ugly Berserk 2017), stunning visuals, and an EXTREMELY well done plot... except for the ending. I LOVED this show while it was airing, constantly marveling at just how pretty and thought provoking it was and also just how much I loved Yaha-kui zaShunina as a character. I really do recommend this to anyone who enjoys sci-fi. Even with its unfortunately glaring flaws, it’s a masterful little piece of work and one of the best of its kind.

5. Net-juu no Susume

The only comedy on this list, but possibly one of my favourite comedy anime period. Net-juu was INCREDIBLY enjoyable and every week I jumped to watch the new episode as soon as it was out. The characters are absolutely lovely and I’ve talked a bit in the past about how I love the show’s very “gender doesn’t matter” approach to romance, featuring not only a married gay couple as side characters but also the protagonist being heavily implied to be bi. The only thing placing this below my next entry was the somewhat lackluster final episode, which was by no means bad but didn’t feel quite as grand as I would have liked. I really hope to eventually see a second season of this, I would love to see more of these characters.

4. Girls’ Last Tour

A very understated show, Girls’ Last Tour didn’t really lend itself to a lot of big moments but instead was more about appreciating the small things. Despite being an apocalypse story, it was very peaceful, cute, and relaxing to watch, with the two lead characters being a joy to see bounce off each other. Ironically, this felt more like my much loved 2003 Kino’s Journey anime than the Kino remake we saw in this same season. The ending as well was phenomenal, closing things very nicely and honestly bringing me to tears.

3. Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season

Honestly need I say more, HeroAca was easily the biggest anime of this year. What I will say was that this season definitely brought the series into its own for me, as I enjoyed the first season but didn’t really think much of it. THIS season, however, grabbed my attention and demanded it hold my interest. I’m heavily looking forward to season 3 and I fully expect it to make me emotional.

2. Houseki no Kuni

MY LOVE, MY LIFE, currently one of the series I am absolutely obsessed with. I love all of the characters to pieces (pun not intended), I love the series’ handle on the topics of trauma and mental illness, and the animation is absolutely stunning, being hands down the best 3DCG anime PERIOD, only aided by the beautiful hand painted backgrounds and excellent cinematography. Even after reading the manga and knowing what was going to happen, I was constantly refreshing the page every Saturday just YEARNING for the new episode to be available. The anime as well did a great job bookending what is hopefully only the first season of what is undeniably a masterpiece.

1. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen

I’ve been saying it since the first season came out two years ago and I’ll say it again here: PLEASE WATCH SHOUWA GENROKU RAKUGO SHINJUU. I absolutely ADORE everything about this show, from its premise to its characters to its cinematography to its music to its absolutely heart-wrenching ending. The first season was my best show of 2016 and, after how much I loved that, I really didn’t expect this second season to not only meet the same level of quality but to surpass it. Every single episode of this show left me a crying mess, actually AFRAID for the next week’s episode to come out because I knew how much it would kill me emotionally and how much I would love every second of it. One of the best shows I have ever watched, anime or otherwise. Please watch Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu.

Okay, so SAOAGGO episode 6 had a bit in it.

There’s a moment where Karen’s friend, the one who introduced her to AmuSphere, mentions losing to Zekken in a fight and says something about how Zekken must be a real weirdo to have hundreds of hours in game. I really appreciated this line, because aside from Mother’s Rosario being my favourite arc and Yuuki my favourite character, this was actually just a pretty funny joke.

But anyway, this episode was almost exclusively IRL, and we learned a couple of interesting things. Most minor of these is we learned a bit more about Boss and her group of peeps in IRL, which was pretty sweet. They’re determined to win the next Squad Jam and a little disappointed that Karen might not be participating. Fun stuff.

We also meet the real life M. His name is Goushi and he’s kinda attractive? Like, not insanely handsome or anything but pretty good looking. He’s also just as wacky as M in game, kabedonning Karen at one point, much to my shock. He reveals a lot about Pito to us, including that he loves her. But also that she was an SAO Beta Tester who missed out on the final product, and found herself extremely interested in the real world death aspect of it, to put it lightly. She’s ready to kill herself or M if they lose in the next Squad Jam because of her craving of that real world aspect. This is a pretty interesting thing to do with her character and a good way to put grander stakes into the narrative. I have faith in Sigsawa’s ability to handle rather insane characters in his works. I mean, Kino’s “mother” may as well have been a horror villain. I loved it.

The episode ends by definitively telling us that Pito and LLENN will fight. Pito promised LLENN in an earlier episode that they’d meet IRL if Pito lost to LLENN in a fight, and this episode sets that fight in stone. It’s coming, and it’ll presumably be pretty hype.

Also, I said the episode ends with that, but we’ve still got post-credits. And indeed, good shit there too. We already know Karen’s friend plays video games, and being the one who introduced Karen to VR gaming, it’s only natural that we see her in action. She quickly namedrops her avatar as Fukizorah, who I’m already familiar with thanks to Memory Defrag and the OP and such. Exciting stuff all around. My only problem with this scene is that Karen’s friend is in the bath, and we get to deal with this unnecessary fanservice shot:

It’s not the worst thing in the world, but for a show that’s been thankfully devoid of such things up to this point, it’s pretty disappointing to see it.

Otherwise though, very solid episode.
