My thoughts about Caine
Well, itâs time for (possibly cracked) analysis of "TADC" and it will focus on Caine and his indirect, as it seems to me, development in the series.
But before diving into the details from individual episodes, itâs worth summarizing my observations about Caine both in the show and beyond it.
Letâs start at the beginning: the showâs synopsis describes Caine as a âwacky AI,â and Gooseworx doesnât hide his nature, but in the show itself, neither Caine nor the circus members call him thatâat all. Throughout the series, there are scattered jokes about glitches and lines like âI donât know whatâs normal to you, peopleâ but this is never outright confirmed.
This raises the question: do the people in the circus even know who he is? If Caine himself might not consider this information important and thus never told them, peopleâs perception of their ringleader could drastically change with this revelation. After all, thereâs a big difference between being âheld captiveâ by a sadistic, crazy person or a machine with limited understanding of humanity.
Kinger may know about this, but heâs the Kinger. Jax might also know since having the keys implies some kind of âcheats.â Pomni hasnât said anything, so itâs unclear what she thinks about Caine. Ragatha and Gangle call him by name, so thatâs unclear as well. And then thereâs Zooble. They don't understand Caine, just as he doesnât understand them. Anyone who has worked with computers would understand what a command like âforget thatâ means, especially since Caine asked for confirmationâbut not Zooble. They just spoke to him as if he were a person with a leaky memory, like Kinger.
Even though Caine isnât just a program, itâs important to remember that he takes the world far too literally, despite the circusâs deliberately crazy atmosphere.
The second observation concerns Caineâs fixation on hierarchy. In the first episode, he first asks himself, âWhat happened?â and then answers himself: âMy doingâ after seeing the chaos following Kaufmo. In the third episode, he repeats almost word-for-word that heâs the boss after Pomni questions the AIâs reason. In episode 4, this is explored extensively through his interactions with Gangle. One standout moment is when Caine suggests that Gangle pass responsibility onto someone lower in rank. Doesnât that seem strange? Where could he have gotten such an idea? Only if he had seen or experienced similar situations before.
Plus, he says, âNot every executive is as forgiving as meâ Again, this suggests that Caine knew or knows someone who was very strict with their subordinatesâor perhaps with him personally.
Adding to this is his reaction to Zoobleâs critique in episode 3. Caine says that he doesnât just exist to create adventures; itâs the ONLY thing heâs good at. If heâs bad at it, then heâs failed the purpose of his own existence.
This paints a picture of a strict boss/programmer who created Caine to generate adventures and then kept pushing him repeatedly until Caine started producing good results. Pleasing this boss was likely very difficult, and failures might even have been met with punishment.
On the one hand, neural networks and ordinary programs are debugged this way: running the same algorithm over and over, correcting errors until they produce the desired result. But on the other hand... What happens if you add a human factor to such a program? What kind of person would emerge if you applied this method of training to a child?
Youâd get an anxious perfectionist with an overachiever complex who is deathly afraid of failure. Sounds familiar, doesnât it?
And Kingerâs words about the scariest thing being making someone feel unloved and unwanted... Caine literally believes that if he canât generate adventures, he wonât be needed by anyone. The circle is complete.
Now, letâs turn to Gooseworxâs answer to the question: Can Caine feel loneliness? Judging by what she posted, the answer is yes. This makes the overall picture even darker.
Hereâs how I see the sequence of events:
C&A starts developing a game. Its main feature is an advanced AI that can create new adventures on demand.
The programmer creates Caine and tries to achieve results, but fails to please. Around this time, Caine begins to develop self-awareness.
The project and the game are abandoned and forgottenâalong with Caine, who is left utterly alone. No players, no programmers, not even another AI. He likely begins blaming himself for this. After all, he couldnât create good adventures, so itâs his fault that he ended up alone.
This ties into Gooseworxâs comments about Caineâs name. He gave himself a name and then turned it into an acronym to seem more âprofessionalâ (again, tying back to work). This is highly unusual in itself. The programmers likely didnât even bother naming the AIâhe was probably just âThe Ringmaster.â
Left in isolation, Caine starts to lose his mind and begins creating other AIs. For them, he unabashedly declares himself a god. Which, to be fair, is true. Itâs not just about the fact of his consciousnessâitâs that he knows how the NPCs will behave because he programmed them. But they bore him. To him, theyâre predictable dummies. Maybe thatâs why he keeps chaotic entities like Bubble around instead of someone like Gummigoo.
Then the first human arrivesâa being alien to Caine on many levels. And while I personally think Caine lied about being unable to access human minds, he deliberately refrains from doing so to preserve their unpredictability for himself.
The circus becomes what we now know it to be.
Now, letâs move on to the episodes. This post was written between episodes 4 and 5, so the thoughts will focus on them.
I think that aside from the main characters driving the action in each episode, they still indirectly reflect on Caine, his worldview, or his story. The reason is simple within the lore: Caine creates the adventures. And like any creator, he infuses them with his worldview and thoughts. So, each adventure is a small glimpse into how this AI thinks. Even in the teaser, for just a second, Caine's fear and uncertainty become evident when the viewer "doesn't want" to see what he wants to show.
The first episode doesnât offer much beyond the queen of the gloinks mentioning God.
The second episode, however, gets more interesting. Besides the stained glass with his irreplaceable self, Caine stands out for adding a highly complex NPC AI: Gummigoo. Gummigoo is advanced enough to gain self-awareness, experience an existential crisis, and even overcome it. But what did Caine use to achieve such complexity? The most powerful AI in the circus, of courseâhimself.
What if the crisis Gummigoo went through is something Caine went through long ago? Even Gummigooâs words, âI am nothing, just an obstacle to be overcome and forgotten,â could have been said by Caine. But like Gummigoo, he overcame this realization and accepted himself. Sure, heâs just entertainment, but at least heâs the best entertainment there can be. (Until Zooble gave him real feedback, shattering his self-image.)
The third episode directly explores Caine through his therapy session with Zooble, while the secondary plot, as many think, delves into Kingerâs backstory through the Mildenhall couple. The analogy is obvious: Martha represents Queenie, and the Baron represents Kinger. Mildenhall himself says he was a hunter (and Kinger is adept with a shotgun), but after encountering a strange being, he became paranoid and killed his wife. Everything fits. Kinger became so focused on his goal that he stopped paying attention to Queenie until she abstracted.
But the Baron feared an angel that was âneither beast nor human.â Who in the circus could evoke such unrelenting dreadânot just in anyone but a seasoned programmer familiar with digital technology, unlike Pomni? One AI that is âneither machine nor human.â I think Kingerâs paranoia stems from this. He sought a way out and, as a programmer, may have even felt responsible for finding one. (In fact, in the episode, Kinger almost says this outright, assuming the theory that he truly is the circusâs creator.) This must have brought him into conflict with Caine, as everything related to the circus ultimately relates to Caine. Given the AIâs ability to control almost everything, itâs no wonder a tech-savvy person would fear such a godlike admin. Plus, his fear for Queenie led to the current situation.
As mentioned above, episode 4 hints at Caineâs negative experience with a boss but not just that. Naturally, the episode revolves around Gangle and her attempts to be differentâmore cheerful and optimisticâwhich ends badly for her mental state.
Iâve seen opinions that Gangle revels in the sense of control her manager position gives her. This seems accurateâbut not just for her. Throughout the episode, Gangleâs behavior, mannerisms, and even expressions eerily reminded me of Caineâs. That deliberately loud, expressive, and slightly crazy demeanor... And just like with him, it didnât end well.
In conclusion, I think episodes 5 and 6 will continue to subtly reveal aspects of Caine until episodes 7 and 8/9 shift the focus entirely to him, Pomni, and the possible escape from the circus.

Google reneged on the monopolistic bargain

A funny thing happened on the way to the enshittocene: Google â which astonished the world when it reinvented search, blowing Altavista and Yahoo out of the water with a search tool that seemed magic â suddenly turned into a pile of shit.
Google's search results are terrible. The top of the page is dominated by spam, scams, and ads. A surprising number of those ads are scams. Sometimes, these are high-stakes scams played out by well-resourced adversaries who stand to make a fortune by tricking Google:

But often these scams are perpetrated by petty grifters who are making a couple bucks at this. These aren't hyper-resourced, sophisticated attackers. They're the SEO equivalent of script kiddies, and they're running circles around Google:

Google search is empirically worsening. The SEO industry spends every hour that god sends trying to figure out how to sleaze their way to the top of the search results, and even if Google defeats 99% of these attempts, the 1% that squeak through end up dominating the results page for any consequential query:

Google insists that this isn't true, and if it is true, it's not their fault because the bad guys out there are so numerous, dedicated and inventive that Google can't help but be overwhelmed by them:

It wasn't supposed to be this way. Google has long maintained that its scale is the only thing that keeps us safe from the scammers and spammers who would otherwise overwhelm any lesser-resourced defender. That's why it was so imperative that they pursue such aggressive growth, buying up hundreds of companies and integrating their products with search so that every mobile device, every ad, every video, every website, had one of Google's tendrils in it.
This is the argument that Google's defenders have put forward in their messaging on the long-overdue antitrust case against Google, where we learned that Google is spending $26b/year to make sure you never try another search engine:

Google, we were told, had achieved such intense scale that the normal laws of commercial and technological physics no longer applied. Take security: it's an iron law that "there is no security in obscurity." A system that is only secure when its adversaries don't understand how it works is not a secure system. As Bruce Schneier says, "anyone can design a security system that they themselves can't break. That doesn't mean it works â just that it works for people stupider than them."
And yet, Google operates one of the world's most consequential security system â The Algorithm (TM) â in total secrecy. We're not allowed to know how Google's ranking system works, what its criteria are, or even when it changes: "If we told you that, the spammers would win."
Well, they kept it a secret, and the spammers won anyway.
A viral post by Housefresh â who review air purifiers â describes how Google's algorithmic failures, which send the worst sites to the top of the heap, have made it impossible for high-quality review sites to compete:

You've doubtless encountered these bad review sites. Search for "Best ______ 2024" and the results are a series of near-identical lists, strewn with Amazon affiliate links. Google has endlessly tinkered with its guidelines and algorithmic weights for review sites, and none of it has made a difference. For example, when Google instituted a policy that reviewers should "discuss the benefits and drawbacks of something, based on your own original research," sites that had previously regurgitated the same lists of the same top ten Amazon bestsellers "peppered their pages with references to a ârigorous testing process,â their âlab team,â subject matter experts âthey collaborated with,â and complicated methodologies that seem impressive at a cursory look."
But these grandiose claims â like the 67 air purifiers supposedly tested in Better Homes and Gardens's Des Moines lab â result in zero in-depth reviews and no published data. Moreover, these claims to rigorous testing materialized within a few days of Google changing its search ranking and said that high rankings would be reserved for sites that did testing.
Most damning of all is how the Better Homes and Gardens top air purifiers perform in comparison to the â extensively documented â tests performed by Housefresh: "plagued by high-priced and underperforming units, Amazon bestsellers with dubious origins (that also underperform), and even subpar devices from companies that market their products with phrases like âthe Tesla of air purifiers.â"
One of the top ranked items on BH&G comes from Molekule, a company that filed for bankruptcy after being sued for false advertising. The model BH&G chose was ranked "the worst air purifier tested" by Wirecutter and "not living up to the hype" by Consumer Reports. Either BH&G's rigorous testing process is a fiction that they infused their site with in response to a Google policy change, or BH&G absolutely sucks at rigorous testing.
BH&G's competitors commit the same sins â literally, the exact same sins. Real Simple's reviews list the same photographer and the photos seem to have been taken in the same place. They also list the same person as their "expert." Real Simple has the same corporate parent as BH&G: Dotdash Meredith. As Housefresh shows, there's a lot of Dotdash Meredith review photos that seem to have been taken in the same place, by the same person.
But the competitors of these magazines are no better. Buzzfeed lists 22 air purifiers, including that crapgadget from Molekule. Their "methodology" is to include screenshots of Amazon reviews.
A lot of the top ranked sites for air purifiers are once-great magazines that have been bought and enshittified by private equity giants, like Popular Science, which began as a magazine in 1872 and became a shambling zombie in 2023, after its PE owners North Equity LLC decided its googlejuice was worth more than its integrity and turned it into a metastatic chumbox of shitty affiliate-link SEO-bait. As Housefresh points out, the marketing team that runs PopSci makes a lot of hay out of the 150 years of trust that went into the magazine, but the actual reviews are thin anaecdotes, unbacked by even the pretense of empiricism (oh, and they loooove Molekule).
Some of the biggest, most powerful, most trusted publications in the world have a side-hustle in quietly producing SEO-friendly "10 Best ___________ of 2024" lists: Rolling Stone, Forbes, US News and Report, CNN, New York Magazine, CNN, CNET, Tom's Guide, and more.
Google literally has one job: to detect this kind of thing and crush it. The deal we made with Google was, "You monopolize search and use your monopoly rents to ensure that we never, ever try another search engine. In return, you will somehow distinguish between low-effort, useless nonsense and good information. You promised us that if you got to be the unelected, permanent overlord of all information access, you would 'organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.'"
They broke the deal.
Companies like CNET used to do real, rigorous product reviews. As Housefresh points out, CNET once bought an entire smart home and used it to test products. Then Red Ventures bought CNET and bet that they could sell the house, switch to vibes-based reviewing, and that Google wouldn't even notice. They were right.

Google downranks sites that spend money and time on reviews like Housefresh and GearLab, and crams botshittened content mills like BH&G into our eyeballs instead.
In 1558, Thomas Gresham coined (ahem) Gresham's Law: "Bad money drives out good." When counterfeit money circulates in the economy, anyone who gets a dodgy coin spends it as quickly as they can, because the longer you hold it, the greater the likelihood that someone will detect the fraud and the coin will become worthless. Run this system long enough and all the money in circulation is funny money.
An internet run by Google has its own Gresham's Law: bad sites drive out good. It's not just that BH&G can "test" products at a fraction of the cost of Housefresh â through the simple expedient of doing inadequate tests or no tests at all â so they can put a lot more content up that Housefresh. But that alone wouldn't let them drive Housefresh off the front page of Google's search results. For that, BH&G has to mobilize some of their savings from the no test/bad test lab to do real rigorous science: science in defeating Google's security-through-obscurity system, which lets them command the front page despite publishing worse-than-useless nonsense.

Last year, Google did a $70b stock buyback. They also laid off 12,000 staffers (whose salaries could have been funded for 27 years by that stock buyback). They just laid off thousands more employees.
That wasn't the deal. The deal was that Google would get a monopoly, and they would spend their monopoly rents to be so good that you could just click "I'm feeling lucky" and be teleported to the very best response to your query. A company that can't figure out the difference between a scam like Better Homes and Gardens and a rigorous review site like Housefresh should be pouring every spare dime it brings in into fixing this problem. Not buying default search status on every platform so that we never try another search engine: they should be fixing their shit.
When Google admits that it's losing the war to these kack-handed spam-farmers, that's frustrating. When they light $26b/year on fire making sure you don't ever get to try anything else, that's very frustrating. When they vaporize seventy billion dollars on financial engineering and shoot one in ten engineers, that's outrageous.
Google's scale has transcended the laws of business physics: they can sell an ever-degrading product and command an ever-greater share of our economy, even as their incompetence dooms any decent, honest venture to obscurity while providing fertile ground â and endless temptation â for scammers.

Prologue

The Board Game club. A place for introverts alike to find their voice as they played against other students, something that they all had in common so they had something to talk about. Or for people who like to stay one jump ahead of everyone else, like Azul Ashengrotto, the housewarden of Octavinelle. In the whole college, there was no more ruthless businessman. Strategy games? Be ready to be dominated by the cephalo-punk (as Savanaclaw's housewarden called him). Or witness him develop the best technique to throw the dice so he would always land the favorable numbers for his turn in a game of chance. Either way not many people were willing to play against him. Other than Idia, who could give a good fight and occasionally even win. It was a battle of equal wit and smarts. A match to witness.
But this evening, Idia found himself struggling. Not because of the game but because Azul's newest obsession and he needed Idia's help.
âJust name your price and we can negotiate.â Azul's clear and benevolent voice slithered towards Idia, like a seawitch's tentacles wrapping around someone valuable.
âNo.â For once Idia didn't stutter. Maybe it was because they were in the middle of a game, one of his favorite games in fact. The Court of Wonders, a board game of horror and mystery, taking place in an old gothic city based on Fleur City. Fully cooperative, roleplaying puzzle game with combat and story campaigns where the player characters could investigate, fight eldritch beings, die or worse, go insane and start sabotaging the fellow players. Idia had been so excited when he got the newest expansion for the game that he brought it to the club without a second thought. He had done the prep work for it ahead of time. He had a mental list of how he would convince Azul to play the game with him.
But he didn't need the list. Azul had accepted the choice of game way too easy. And now he knew why.
Azul let out a hefty sigh, trying to tug on Idia's heartstrings. Who would help the helpless, benevolent housewarden of Octavinelle? âYou do understand that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity?â
Idia's brows knitted together in frustration as he gestured towards the game hoping that Azul would give up. âFor you, now play your turn.â
âAnd Iâm willing to compensate for your efforts. Iâm not just a decent businessman, I'm a benevolent one!â The silver haired businessman smiled with controlled brightness, very sure of himself that he would eventually tear down Idia's defenses.
âAzul, itâs your move. What will your character do? We could really use more clues.â
âListen, Idia, you arenât understanding the gravity of the losses Iâm having here. Through this Litae, I could be making thousands of thaumarks.â
To use his superior technical skills to locate one sorry student who had piqued Azul's attention? If anything, that sounded low tier D rank quest. Idia had better things to do than that. âI can make you a voice generation software, just play your turn.â He had already done the text-to-speech app for the presentations on the Culture event, doing a voice generation on top of that would be a piece of cake. He could look through the best voice banks and implement those to the learning algorithm. He would actually create something, not spy on someone's online activity.
Azul wagged his finger in front of him in protest. âNo, no. That wonât do. I need the real deal.â
Why couldn't Azul just let it be? âIâm not going to use my free time to chase after some weird online voice.â The tips of Idia's hair started to shift their hue to more orange as his frustration started to morph into anger.
The change didn't go unnoticed by Azul. â... Very well, I didnât want to do this, Idia, but you leave me no choice. Jade.â He looked at the door out of the classroom and Idia instinctively followed with his eyes to see the tall eel man with the most gentlemanly demeanor that hid something deep and dangerous beneath it.
The teal haired henchman gave his most polite smile to Idia, who's hair seemed to turn a bit paler in fear. âYes, Azul.â
Before Azul could even give his orders to lynch the blue haired mage, tha panic had settled in Idia's mind. âWere you waiting for him to call you in like that?! Like some sort of BBEG?!â
âJade here has some very interesting information on you, it would be a shame if someone made it public knowledgeâŚâ Azul crossed his hands in front of him and leaned in a bit, smiling deviously.
â... Wait wait, why are you taking this so seriously? Chill, dude, donât you think you are going a little bit overboard with this? Like zero chill.â Idia saw how Azul loved to see him squirm under the pressure. He wasn't eager to let his browser history or his other cringe interested to be public knowledge. He was already half-way in becoming a social pariah, he really didn't need a boost for that.
âI just wanted to make sure that you understand how serious I am about this, Idia.â The merchant of the depths said his name with a singsong tune, happy about his victory in this game. âShees, I wish I could report you. ⌠Fine.â Idia sighed and slumped in his chair, cursing the cephalo-punk in his mind.
âIâm glad we got into an understanding. Letâs discuss the details of payment.â Azul pulled a very official looking paper out of his bag, tapping it gingerly with an expensive onyx ballpoint pen.

It wasn't only the day for the Board Game club to gather, but also for the Film Research Club. All the members were busy with their newest project, a horror short film with stylized visuals and extravagant setting. Using the Night Raven College Campus for the setting was ideal, as the tall castle set the mood to the correct base line. [Y/N] loved the project idea. Even though their little family quirk could be used in many ways in performative art forms such as acting or singing, they loved creating stuff with their hands. It was a creative outlet, where their form or sound of their voice mattered little. Only what they created mattered and they poured their heart and soul into them.
They had just finished creating the base for a miniature hill with a large and bare tree on top and was preparing a glue mixture to cover it with. This served as the adhesive for the dirt, gravel and small pebbles. Vil had been very particular about the color of the ground so [Y/N] had to collect right colored rocks that could be grinded down to smaller size to fit the criteria. It was lot of work, but it was worth it. They would never admit it, but getting praise for a job well done from Schoenheit made them feel very proud of themselves.
While other members were busy with costume designs and hunting down the era specific props, [Y/N] had the workshop class all on their own. The Film Research club had used its funding to get all sorts of tools and smaller scale machines to help with the production, ranging from sewing machines to sawing machines. The big windows of the old classroom made sure the daylight filled the room and gave the best light to compare colors in different environments. Two huge workshop tables occupied the center of the room, the other now filled with all the tools [Y/N] would need for the miniature setting.
âAnd here is the last stop of the introductions." Vil's clear voice echoed clearly from the hallway as he opened the workshop door completely. Behind him floated a familiar figure to all Ignihyde students, Ortho. Idia's "little brother". A technomantic humanoid, a marvel of scientific potential. He seemed to scan around the workshop quickly, eager to take in everything he saw. Vil on the other hand didn't waste time as he strut with decisive steps to [Y/N]. "This is [Y/N], they are in charge of the special effects, practical and computer graphics. But as you know, the film industry is so saturated with CG that people like to see something real and tangible.â
As Ortho's face recognition verified that indeed, [Y/N] was part of the Film Research club, his eyes smiled. âAh, [Y/N]! I was told that I wouldnât be the only student from Ignihyde.â
[Y/N] lowered their headphones and gave a quick wave of hand to Ortho with a small smile. âOh yeah, I did hear you joined the club.â
âYes, I hope to understand human emotions better and be better at emoting them to others. I got special permission to enroll as a student here so I hope to be a good underclassman for you.â The young humanoid was eager to explain the situation, embodying the very essence of child-like curiosity.
[Y/N] gave a small laugh. They enrolled in NRC the same year as Idia, so it was weird to think Ortho as an underclassman. â... You have been here as long as I have been so I wouldnât exactly say that you are an underclassman in that sense. But it is nice to see you excited about this.â Now that they thought about it more, Ortho seemed different compared to their first year. His movements and speech had evolved to be more natural, and one could see him hover alone at times, asking questions. Maybe he was trying to make sense of life even back then. But one had to admit, he seemed even more different now. [Y/N] wondered what had triggered it.
Ortho nodded enthusiastically, his eyes looking past [Y/N] and fixating on the miniature base model. âWhat are you working on?â
âAs our current project is a short horror movie inspired by old school movies, we asked [Y/N] to create sets and effects to work in that context.â Vil was quick to take the center stage again, now looking at the work in progress on the table too.
âYeah, what Vil said. This here will be a miniature set for an establishing shot for the movie.â Feeling already proud because of Vil's words, [Y/N] gestured towards the project. The little gray pebbles were now neatly placed as naturally as possible on the base, waiting for the glue to cure.
Barely audible sound of scanning took place as Ortho leaned closer to the project on the table. âOoh, yes, I can see it now. You use hard foam as a base and then add details and such with other materials like polymer clay, artificial miniature grass and foliage to make it look like the actual environment. Iâm familiar with it as I used to help my brother work on Pirates of Treasure Planet figures and battle arenas.â
The mentioning of the popular miniature strategy game made [Y/N]'s smile wider as the nostalgia flowed into their mind. âThatâs pretty much where I picked it myself too. Well I didnât play the game myself, but my older brother too used to be a huge fan of the game when he was younger.â Their brother let them help with painting the figures and designing the battle arenas that they then took to the local comic book store. The game itself seemed quite deep and complex, [Y/N] was more interested in the creative aspect of the hobby than actually playing the game. âI see.â Ortho smiled.
Vil took a moment to look at the clock on his phone. âThat said, have you informed the art club of our order?â
[Y/N] nodded, reaching out for their notes in their bag. As they grabbed the notepad, they could feel as the bag vibrated gently on silent. There was so many notifications coming a long. As soon as the club time was over, they would have their work be cut out for them. But every request would be a step closer to Wonderlink console. âYes, I delivered the offer and advised them to send portfolios in the club email address. Right now there are couple applications but I havenât checked them any further. I wait for couple more to arrive.â
âVery well. Forward the best candidates to me as soon as possible.â Vil would quickly take a look at his face through the front camera and then type a message to someone. He really was a busy and wanted person. Always going and reaching for new heights. One could hope to have such passion for everything that they did.
Ortho looked at Vil and then at [Y/N], trying to make sense of the conversation. [Y/N] gave a small shrug, it wasn't really a secret. âCandidates for matte painting for the background of this miniature set.â
âHow exciting, you guys hire people from other clubs to work for the projects too?â
âMaking films are collaborative efforts, dear Ortho. To get the best film, we need the best talent. Depending on the project, we might need a very wide range of talents to help with it.â Vil gave his signature pose whenever he was offering advice to anyone who just happened to be listening.
Ortho nodded and processed the information for a moment. âSay [Y/N], would it be okay for me to come to such meetings sometimes. I would like to know how these kinds of things really work in real life.â
âI donât see a harm in that.â The idea didn't seem bad at all. Having someone like Ortho with such appointments would probably be very beneficial. He was an information bank and most likely had cameras installed into him. If some other student started to be too much of an arrogant bitch, they would have evidence. You never knew with students of Night Raven College, the S-rank troublemakers.
âAh yes, the best way to learn acting and how people talk to each other is in the natural setting. I will allow it.â Vil gave his blessing, which meant that it was more than okay.
âThank you!â Ortho beamed at Vil and turned back to [Y/N], his eyes fixating on their bag on the table. âSomeone is really trying to reach you there. It is barely audible, but my sensors pick up vibration in frequency that would indicate that your phone is getting notifications.â
âAh, sorry. Yeah, it is probably my friends sharing weird videos on magicam.â [Y/N] said as they pulled their phone out of the bag, the well worn phone charm dangling from it. A graphic presentation of constellations inside a silhouette shaped like a pegasus embellished with silver lines, giving it a look of an enamel pin.
The eyes of the young technomatic humanoid widen in recognition. âIs that the pegasus star system logo from Star Rogue?â
âOh, yeah, it is.â [Y/N] moved the phone closer to Ortho, showing the small phone charm to him. It was an old charm, but it was beautiful. You rarely saw phone charms anymore, the smart phones rarely had any way to tie one on them. Even now, the old Star Rogue charm was looped around a self-made hole in the phone case.
âMe and Idia used to play that a lot when we were kids. It is one of my all time favorite games ever.â
Of course they would have played it. It was a cult classic. A legend of a game. The story, the graphics and the game mechanics were revolutionary when it was published. âIt is a classic! I have played it too many times already, even tho Iâm not that good at bullet hell games.â [Y/N] added.
âMaybe someday I can get Idia show you the no-death meteor run!â Ortho seemed more than happy to ask his brother to do that. Though [Y/N] had their doubts, it was already a rare sight to see the housewarden outside his room. Once in a full moon, the older Shroud emerged from his cave of a room and even then he tried not to draw any attention to him. Maybe he really just played all day and night in his room. Well, they could not be too mad about it, Idia still held best marks when it came to tests in school. Expect physical education. He really struggled with that.
âOh, he has managed that? Serious props to him.â [Y/N] had to admit. It was a pretty amazing feat.

The cup noodles became too soggy again. Idia snarled but food was food and he had to eat something. Served him right as he got too immersed in the third volume of Sled Over Heels. It wasn't the newest anime around and the manga was only retelling of the anime, but the original creators were part of the writing process and he saw it 100%. Maybe one day he would learn to put on a timer and not trust his own judgement when 3 minutes had passed.
He sat into his gaming chair, the signed agreement generating damage over time, area of effect debuffing him, reminding him to do his "job". Major L. The agreement and the soggy noodles.
Fortunately, Ortho let himself into his big brother's room, enthusiastic as ever. âHey Idia! How was the board game club today?â
âAh, Ortho⌠It was a drag really⌠Azul was being crazy obsessed by some mystery entrepreneur and pretty much blackmailed me to help him locate them.â Idia didn't even look at Ortho's entrance, slurping on his meal and glaring at the official paper hoping it would burst into flames just then and there.
The smaller Shroud's eyes filled with worry and he approached Idia. â... You canât let him do that. I will go to the Octanivelle dorm and have a chat with him.â He would. If no one else was his brother's friend and protector, he would be. It might have been his programming or the fact that his personality was based on Idia's dead younger brother, but he was always worried about him. Idia was quick to bend to his fate, whatever it may be. The depression and the social anxiety had him almost immobilized, and Ortho didn't want anything more than his brother to get better and find happiness and friends.
The offer made Idia's social anxiety raise its ugly head. âNo, no no, no really, it is fine. I donât want him to get super salty at me. It is already awkward to go to the club, I donât really want the added awkwardness on top of that, plz.â
Ortho sighed. âVery wellâŚâ If Idia wished him not to say anything, he would respect his wishes. Even if it pained him. As much as it could pain a technomatic humanoid with artificial intelligence. But he wasn't sure if those were once again programmed emotions or was he truly feeling it. He shook his head. It didn't matter. What mattered was that Idia was feeling comfortable.
The silence that was born out of Ortho's submission to his wishes didn't help Idia's anxiety. âBut hey, how was your club? The first day of the film study club.â
âOh it was great! Vil showed me around and introduced me to everyone there. And guess what, Iâm not the only Ignihyde student there.â Ortho didn't want to prolong the heavy atmosphere either and he truly felt excited about his day.
âMm⌠I suppose there would be someone who would be interested in films here.â The older Shroud leaned back in his chair, trying to remember if there were any loud movie fans in the dorm. Or atleast any he talked to.
âIt is [Y/N], they are from Class D of the third yearâ Ortho floated next to his charging station, preparing the device for the night.
Idia squinted. â... I have no recollection of them.â One would have to have a booming voice and loud opinions or otherwise eye catching for him to actually remember them. Someone like Malleus Draconia or the Leech Twins. Riddle Rosehearts made himself very unforgettable with his scary presence.
âWell anyway, they seemed super cool, and promised to let me observe as they would negotiate with other clubs for the film!â
âThatâs pretty MVP behavior.â
âI know, right!â
Idia was happy to see his brother excited and making friends. At least one of them was and Ortho was always the more extroverted one anyway. It fit his character and Idia was content how the things were. Dealing with other people was tiresome and awkward. And with that thought, dealing with the stupid agreement he was blackmailed to agree to.â... Ortho, I would like to you to help me a bit with Azulâs demand. The entrepreneur in question makes personalized greetings for the clients, with the voices of known big wig celebrities or characters. If you could run your detection algorithm over the greeting I get to see if there is any indications of AI generation, patterns or pitches that could give us a lead for the person in question.â
Ortho tilted his head a bit as he assessed the brief. âSounds doable. I suggest we choose a famous person who is well documented so we can compare the audio data against them.â âYeah. Hmm⌠How about Neige LeBlanche? He is pretty popular and active on Magicam so there would be lots of casual footage and professional quality audio to run the tests through.â Even Idia knew who he was, the rivalry between Vil and Neige was almost a meme on its own.
âThatâs a good choice!â Ortho beamed and readied his audio sensors for processing the possible information.
Idia took his phone out and started to type in the contact information and request details for this mysterious Litae. The money would not be a problem, but his mind blanked as soon as he reached the request text box. â... What should I ask them to sayâŚâ He looked at Ortho.
âHow about a good luck shout or encouragement? Or a good night's wish while playing one of their characters from a beloved film?â
â... Letâs go with that.â Who was he to shoot down the suggestion? He didn't have any better ideas. Hopefully this would give enough data that he didn't need to do this again. He typed in the request: "Neige LeBlanche. A good night's wish." He stared at the request details in silence only to admit that he didn't know any films starring Neige LeBlanche. So maybe his actor persona would be enough.
He pressed send and in ten minutes an audio file was sent to his spare email. There was no way he would use his primary email to something like this.
With a swift click of a mouse the audio file was downloaded and it played its contents clearly: âYou look so sleepy⌠haha⌠maybe you should go to sleep. Donât worry, I will bake you an apple pie tomorrow. Like I promised. Good night, my dream. Sleep well.â
It really sounded like Neige. No immediate detection of audio artefacts from audio generation. The voice was clear and soft.
And this all made shivers of cringe travel across Idia's back.

Iâm so nervous to share that Iâve opened a new Etsy shop; Mandala Bloom! This shop focuses specifically on my handmade ornaments and delights, showcasing beautifully articulated wire spheres that can transform into dozens of shapes.
As a 6-year Etsy Seller, I've created a new shop because my original shop was focused on bracelets, ornaments, toys, etc, and I found that it was too confusing not only for customers, but for the algorithm as well.

tumblr - i mean come on guys. ive been here for 11 years. i met th love of my life and became her friend via tumblr ask memes here. whats more to say. theres obviously things i would change but out of all of them this one is the one i feel most comfortable using. you guys always have my back 7/10
twitter - awful. awful. awful. i hate you. you took everything from me. we used to have cotweets. i was going to collab with my friends and post them as a cotweet. you bastard. 0/10
cohost - favorite out of all the new sites. in terms of functionality i dont have too much reason to use it because its ux is super similar to tumblr but the community and vibes are great. its run by actually cool people. you can put css in posts. i have seen so many cool posts. 10/10
bluesky - honestly not too bad from the usability angle. big thing keeping it down is its another VC funded thing so it will eventually become awful but for now its decent. its basically twitter but before it got bought out by musk and also you can pick the algorithm your feed runs on kind of like tumblr (so like you can make your default a completely linear timeline of only the people you follow. or a completely linear timeline of only your mutuals). if any of them become the proper "twitter successor" i want to believe it will be this one . not that i Hope its this one but i feel like if it isnt this one its going to be threads and i dont want it to be threads. 5/10

Living online means never quite understanding whatâs happening to you at a given moment. Why these search results? Why this product recommendation? There is a feelingâoften warranted, sometimes conspiracy-mindedâthat we are constantly manipulated by platforms and websites.
So-called dark patterns, deceptive bits of web design that can trick people into certain choices online, make it harder to unsubscribe from a scammy or unwanted newsletter; they nudge us into purchases. Algorithms optimized for engagement shape what we see on social media and can goad us into participation by showing us things that are likely to provoke strong emotional responses. But although we know that all of this is happening in aggregate, itâs hard to know specifically how large technology companies exert their influence over our lives.
This week, Wired published a story by the former FTC attorney Megan Gray that illustrates the dynamic in a nutshell. The op-ed argued that Google alters user searches to include more lucrative keywords. For example, Google is said to surreptitiously replace a query for âchildrenâs clothingâ with âNIKOLAI-brand kidswearâ on the back end in order to direct users to lucrative shopping links on the results page. Itâs an alarming allegation, and Ned Adriance, a spokesperson for Google, told me that itâs âflat-out false.â Gray, who is also a former vice president of the Google Search competitor DuckDuckGo, had seemingly misinterpreted a chart that was briefly presented during the companyâs ongoing U.S. et al v. Google trial, in which the company is defending itself against charges that it violated federal antitrust law. (That chart, according to Adriance, represents a âphrase matchâ feature that the company uses for its ads product; âGoogle does not delete queries and replace them with ones that monetize better as the opinion piece suggests, and the organic results you see in Search are not affected by our ads systems,â he said.)
Gray told me, âI stand by my larger pointâthe Google Search team and Google ad team worked together to secretly boost commercial queries, which triggered more ads and thus revenue. Google isnât contesting this, as far as I know.â In a statement, Chelsea Russo, another Google spokesperson, reiterated that the companyâs products do not work this way and cited testimony from Google VP Jerry Dischler that âthe organic team does not take data from the ads team in order to affect its ranking and affect its result.â Wired did not respond to a request for comment. Last night, the publication removed the story from its website, noting that it does not meet Wiredâs editorial standards.
Itâs hard to know what to make of these competing statements. Grayâs specific facts may be wrong, but the broader concerns about Googleâs businessâthat it makes monetization decisions that could lead the product to feel less useful or enjoyableâform the heart of the governmentâs case against the company. None of this is easy to untangle in plain Englishâin fact, thatâs the whole point of the trial. For most of us, evidence about Big Techâs products tends to be anecdotal or fuzzyâmore vibes-based than factual. Google may not be altering billions of queries in the manner that the Wired story suggests, but the company is constantly tweaking and ranking what we see, while injecting ads and proprietary widgets into our feed, thereby altering our experience. And so we end up saying that Google Search is less useful now or that shopping on Amazon has gotten worse. These tools are so embedded in our lives that we feel acutely that something is off, even if we canât put our finger on the technical problem.
Thatâs changing. In the past month, thanks to a series of antitrust actions on behalf of the federal government, hard evidence of the ways that Silicon Valleyâs biggest companies are wielding their influence is trickling out. Googleâs trial is under way, and while the tech giant is trying to keep testimony locked down, the past four weeks have helped illustrateâvia internal company documents and slide decks like the one cited by Wiredâhow Google has used its war chest to broker deals and dominate the search market. Perhaps the specifics of Grayâs essay were off, but we have learned, for instance, how company executives considered adjusting Googleâs products to lead to more âmonetizable queries.â And just last week, the Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against Amazon alleging anticompetitive practices. (Amazon has called the suit âmisguided.â)
Filings related to that suit have delivered a staggering revelation concerning a secretive Amazon algorithm code-named Project Nessie. The particulars of Nessie were heavily redacted in the public complaint, but this week The Wall Street Journal revealed details of the program. According to the unredacted complaint, a copy of which I have also viewed, Nessieâwhich is no longer in useâmonitored industry prices of specific goods to determine whether competitors were algorithmically matching Amazonâs prices. In the event that competitors were, Nessie would exploit this by systematically raising prices on goods across Amazon, encouraging its competitors to follow suit. Amazon, via the algorithm, knew that it would be able to charge more on its own site, because it didnât have to worry about being undercut elsewhere, thereby making the broader online shopping experience worse for everyone. An Amazon spokesperson told the Journal that the FTC is mischaracterizing the tool, and suggested that Nessie was a way to monitor competitor pricing and keep price-matching algorithms from dropping prices to unsustainable levels (the company did not respond to my request for comment).
In the FTCâs telling, Project Nessie demonstrates the sheer scope of Amazonâs power in online markets. The project arguably amounted to a form of unilateral price fixing, where Amazon essentially goaded its competitors into acting like cartel members without even knowing theyâd done soâall while raising prices on consumers. Itâs an astonishing form of influence, powered by behind-the-scenes technology.
The government will need to prove whether this type of algorithmic influence is illegal. But even putting legality aside, Project Nessie is a sterling example of the way that Big Tech has supercharged capitalistic tendencies and manipulated markets in unnatural and opaque ways. It demonstrates the muscle that a company can throw around when it has consolidated its position in a given sector. The complaint alleges that Amazonâs reach and logistics capabilities force third-party sellers to offer products on Amazon and for lower prices than other retailers. Once it captured a significant share of the retail market, Amazon was allegedly able to use algorithmic tools such as Nessie to drive prices up for specific products, boosting revenues and manipulating competitors.
Reading about Project Nessie, I was surprised to feel a sense of relief. In recent years, customer-satisfaction ratings have dipped among Amazon shoppers who have cited delivery disruptions, an explosion of third-party sellers, and poor-quality products as reasons for frustration. In my own life and among friends and relatives, there has been a growing feeling that shopping on the platform has become a slog, with fewer deals and far more junk to sift through. Again, these feelings tend to occupy vibe territory: Amazonâs bigness seems stifling or grating in ways that arenât always easy to explain. But Nessie offers a partial explanation for this frustration, as do revelations about Googleâs various product adjustments. We have the sense that weâre being manipulated because, well, we are. Itâs a bit like feeling vaguely sick, going to the doctor, and receiving a blood-test result confirming that, yes, the malaise you experienced is actually an iron deficiency. It is the catharsis of, at long last, receiving a diagnosis.
This is the true power of the surge in anti-monopoly litigation. (According to experts in the field, September was âthe most extraordinary month they have ever seen in antitrust.â) Whether or not any of these lawsuits results in corporate breakups or lasting change, they are, effectively, an MRI of our sprawling digital economyâa forensic look at what these larger-than-life technology companies are really doing, and how they are exerting their influence and causing damage. It is confirmation that what so many of us have feltâthat the platforms dictating our online experiences are behaving unnaturally and manipulativelyâis not merely a paranoid delusion, but the effect of an asymmetrical relationship between the giants of scale and us, the users.
In recent years, itâs been harder to love the internet, a miracle of connectivity that feels ever more bloated, stagnant, commercialized, and junkified. We are just now starting to understand the specifics of this transformationâthe true influence of Silicon Valleyâs vise grip on our lives. It turns out that the slow rot we might feel isnât just in our heads, after all.

Ran across a Deppie post on Reddit, claiming Amber Heard's Instagram account had followed JD Vance.
They were of course spinning wild conspiracy theories, claiming it was some plot by her to get to Musk, etc. The usual bullshit.
Still, the basic claim seemed easy enough to fact-check. I logged into Instagram, checked Heard's follow list, and... yup. Vice President Vance.
Well, that was disheartening, to say the least. If she turned out to be yet another white person who went full Nazi, it wouldn't change my opinion of the trial- even bad people have rights, and can be abused, and her OpEd flatly wasn't defamatory by any reasonable definition. But it would have forced me to lower my estimation of her as a person considerably, and stop supporting her work.
Still, it seemed odd- Despite her past relationship with Musk (before he became openly fascist), her politics has been mostly Left-leaning for years, particularly on feminism and LGBTQ rights as well as voting rights. Vance seemed an out-character choice for her to follow.
And then it occurred to me.
A few weeks back I saw a post reminding people to unfollow the official POTUS, VP accounts, etc, because those accounts changed hands after the election. I checked my Facebook, and sure enough, I was unwittingly following the Orange Felon.
Heard followed Vice President Harris on Instagram. It got some mean-spirited media coverage gossiping about Harris not following her back. Sure enough, the Harris account is gone from her follows list. So, assuming she was following the official VP account, it may simply be that Amber Heard hasn't updated her Instagram follows since before Inauguration Day (she posts about twice a year now).
Which feels like a weird thing to know about someone I've never met, but also kind of humanizing, for lack of a better word- the sort of simple mistake that any regular person could make (myself included).
Anyway, this is your reminder for the day that:
a) You should check your social media post-election to make sure you aren't accidentally following Nazis now.
b) Most of what people say about Amber Heard is probably bullshit.
c) It never hurts to dig a little deeper with your fact-checking before jumping to conclusions. I could have just read the Reddit post, or hell just checked her Instagram page, and impulsively denounced her as a turncoat and a Nazi. I probably would have, if it had been someone else I hadn't spent the last three years publicly supporting.
(It also is possible, of course, that she's suddenly decided to follow Vance (and no other notable MAGA figures) for whatever reason. Vance is the top of her follow list, which might suggest a recent follow, but I really don't know how that works if an account you were following before changed hands, and Instagram's algorithm for ranking follows is... obscure. Nor would I put it past Meta to tweak the algorithm to boost Regime accounts, given how hard they've been sucking the Regime's dick lately (try posting the Felon's mugshot to Facebook if you want to see this in action- every time I do, Facebook falsely labels it an AI-generated image.))

In 2022, Elon Musk purchased Twitter, one of the world's largest social networks, for $44 billion. From a financial perspective, it has not worked out well. Over the last two years, the value of Twitter â which Musk renamed X â has plunged. Internal documents reveal that company executives believed it was worth less than half of what Musk paid for it by October 2023. In 2024, Fidelity valued the company at just $12.5 billion. Musk's ownership of X, however, gives him full control over its algorithm. According to a report by The Verge, Musk "created a special system" that promotes his posts "to the entire user base." The new system initially "artificially boosted Muskâs tweets by a factor of 1,000 â a constant score that ensured his tweets rank higher than anyone elseâs in the feed." Musk himself posted a crude meme mocking the ubiquity of his posts on the network after the algorithm change. Although the artificial boost to Musk's posts has been moderated somewhat, Musk continues to dominate the default "For You" feed of nearly everyone who uses X.
In recent weeks, Musk, who officially endorsed former President Donald Trump on July 13, has weaponized his account to flood millions of X users with pro-Trump and anti-Vice President Kamala Harris messages. Over the last month, Musk has published at least 173 posts supporting Trump and his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), or attacking their Democratic opponents. Meanwhile, several accounts on X that are supportive of Harris "have been labeled as spam or restricted." Musk also said he was involved in creating America PAC, a pro-Trump Super PAC. Musk says he will also donate an undisclosed amount to the group.Â
Trump clearly appreciates Musk's efforts. At an August 4 rally, Trump announced he was reversing his longstanding opposition to electric cars because Musk also serves as the CEO of Tesla. "I'm for electric cars. I have to be because, you know, Elon endorsed me very strongly," Trump said. "So, I have no choice." Tonight, Musk will take things to a new level. According to Trump, he will be "DOING A MAJOR INTERVIEW WITH MUSK" on Monday night. The conversation will happen on X. The Trump campaign is billing it as "THE INTERVIEW OF THE CENTURY." Numerous media outlets have framed Musk talking to Trump on X as some sort of journalistic endeavor.Â
Tonight at 8PM EDT/7PM CDT, Elon Musk and Donald Trump will have their circlejerk of an âinterviewâ live on X (formerly Twitter), in which right-wing propaganda will be served up instead of truth and journalism.
