“You are so inspiring!!”

Heard this topic come up on a recent podcast I was listening to; again, I believe it was @lewishowes so thank you Lewis.  The discussion was how inspiration/motivation are great but do they carry us.  Then the word “drive” was mentioned.  Of course, this got me thinking about the differences; not only in the words but what they really mean.  More specifically, does motivation/inspiration really “drive” us or move us to act.  Over the last few years there have been people that have said, because of the races and events I do, and now with the blog and podcast, that I am inspiring.  I, like so many others out there that put our content and stories out there, are so very grateful to be fortunate to have this impact on others.  That is the true purpose, right? To have a positive impact on the world and help us all become better versions of ourselves.  But after listening to this podcast, I learned, although this is great, what actions are those folks taking?  I’ve heard it before, could have been Jim Rohn, Brian Tracey, or Tony Robbins…. possibly all three & many others, that motivation is what gets you going & discipline is what keeps you going.  Not that I write this it may have been Jocko Willink.  Point is that, I believe we are all motivated to do certain things each day but many times that motivation or inspiration dies because we get distracted by life, we find another priority, or another responsibility surfaces.  If that is the case were we truly motivated to make that thing happen?  I don’t think so because there was no real action taken.  I continuously use mission or vision, and really do like the word drive.  Mission and vision can be substituted with purpose or why too.  As I am writing I have some more stuff coming to my mind and am thinking about a past blog about “Intolerability.”  I’ve experienced, when something in my life gets intolerable it is time for a change.  So, can motivation be substituted for intolerability? Is it fair to say that the situation, which became intolerable, “motivated” me or “inspired” me to make a change?  I guess.  However, for me, at those moments of intolerability, in most cases, I uncovered a new vision that I wanted to chase down.  The new vision then provided me with that purpose; or drive, to act; left foot right foot down this path of a new journey.  Did motivation help create that vision or did I get so sick of myself in some area of my life that change needed to happen?  Good questions I guess!!!  I believe there is a portion of want as well.  Just as I wrote that sentence and thought of the opposite, what we don’t want?  Here’s an example, and we are living it as this writing is being published.  Once we decided to put our house on the market we believed we should get some things fixed and pretty up the place a bit.  Just makes sense, right? To get things in order, at least cosmetically, to show your house in the best possible manner.  I “did not want” to do the work, but believe it should be done so we therefore hired a contractor to do the work.  Sacrifice money time there and I am not very “handy” when it comes to fixing stuff.  As we went through the process of the contractor being here for about 10 days, I just saying, “I do not want this guy here another day.”  It was a major disruption, house was a mess, and I was stressing out.  Actually, much of this journey to move across country has been filled with things “I don’t want to do.”  However, most of them we must do to make the vision become a reality.  Parts of this process suck; the contractor situation, having to get out of your house to show it, contract negotiations, inspections, banks, etc.……not gonna lie, it’s a pain in the ass.  But it is part of the process.  Having that vision though, the purpose, the why, makes those unideal situations tolerable.  And really, in the grand scheme of this thing we call life, this stuff is simple.  So we are grateful for the process, what we are learning and for the chance to create the life we want to live.  I don’t believe there was every anything “motivating” or “inspiring” me to move back to Phoenix.  I just believed I belonged back there.  For a decade I’ve kept those dreams and visions in my mind, kept moving forward, stay persistent, and never let go of that drive to get there……..someday.  In the last 18 months that drive was replaced by will.  Will, that is the word right there.  Will is powerful.  The power of Will gets you going and keeps you going until you either realize that vision or you fall off the side of the mountain trying to get there.  Took me this long to find that word.
