I think part of the reason why fandom doesn't last like it used to is because it's much harder for new people to join. Large chunks of fandom activity are in invite-only discord servers now. Engagement with fic and art has dried up A LOT compared to how it used to be, so unless you post during the initial fandom boom, it's much more likely to be overlooked. People will talk about their favorite works where the creators can't see/engage with it, which can be super discouraging. People will treat everything like tiktok and only leave likes/kudos, and can't seem to find anything on their own without an algorithm. There's not really much fandom culture or community anymore. So why WOULD new people even want to join, when the barriers are so much higher?

15 questions, 15 people
Thx for the tag @marauders-everything2
Starting a new post, it was too long. Slightly modified some questions.
1. Are you named after anyone?
Nope.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Don't remember, probably yesterday.
3. Do you want to have kids?
No thanks :)
4. What sports do/have you played?
My parents tried putting me in a bunch of shit when I was younger so I've done: swimming (for some years, still not great at it lol), surfing (quit after like 2 months), kizomba dance (hated it), another type of dance, contemporary dance (I liked it but the place closed), and we went skiing several times (which I love). If horseriding counts, I did that for a year. Currently not doing any.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Yeah, sometimes. But I'm also quite direct and straightforward. Only "straight" I am.
6. What's the first thing you notice about someone?
Their fashion style. I love going up to strangers to compliment their outfits!
7. What's your eye colour?
Dark brown.
8. Movies with sad or happy endings?
I love movies with uncertain, ambiguous endings, in which the meaning is up for debate (like Inception).
9. What talents do you have?
Fast at absorbing information (sometimes), hypercreativity, great at bullshitting in academic tests/essays, good at making accents and voices, ummm... Can't remember more.
10. Where would you like to live?
New Zealand. It's pretty and one of the least problematic English-speaking countries (wanna live somewhere where English is the official language).
11. What are your hobbies?
Writing fanfiction and original stories (more like my passion), playing The Sims 4, drawing digitally (haven't in a while though), singing?
12. Do you have any pets?
My parents have 3 dogs (no breed) and koi fish. I want a cat :')
13. How tall are you?
165 cm or 5'5" for the Americans.
14. Favourite subject in school?
At college. Don't really like any of my current classes. Ig English C1.2 because we studied the Broadway play Hamilton. Although I haven't learned anything new.
15. What is your dream job?
Writer/author, would also like to do voice acting. Maybe a psychologist too, haven't decided if I'll take a second college degree.

65 for Carthaginians, 66 for fic of your choice, 67, and 69 (always be fishing for recs)
Here we go!
65. If you wrote a sequel to [Carthaginians], what would happen in it?
LYKON MY BELOVED. Not the obvious answer, which I guess would be the followup of Yusuf and Nicolò searching for the lost Carthaginian children, but I honestly don't know how much of a story I have to tell there. However, the later ramifications of this particular canon divergence are fascinating to me, and having essentially swapped origin eras for Joe&Nicky vs. Lykon, I would love to dive into his alternate origin story. I spent way too long trying to pinpoint where in the early medieval period Lykon could have become immortal instead (for a single throwaway line in the one flashforward to present day scene), and it would be fun to explore that further. Or how the events of the movie play out differently with Lykon still part of the team - would he be the one to lose his immortality instead of Andy, since canonically he IS the first to die (and at only around 1000 years old, which is right around movie era in this AU)?
66. What’s a fun fact about [insert fic]?
I guess I'll go with what dreams may come (TOG fusion!AU with Inception), since that's the most recent fic I've posted. IDK how we define "fun fact" here, so here's something that pleased me when it finally came together. The fic alternates between past and present day scenes, and every single one of Nicky's dreams we see in a flashback shows up again in the nightmare Quynh traps him in. I did not plan that going in. I did not have the faintest idea how the final showdown was going to play out until just before I wrote it, and then had the absolute delight of patchworking all the prior dreams together into some kind of Frankenstein's monster of a dream. I'd struggled with writing most of that fic, but that section came together SO easily in the end. Love it when I subconsciously lay my own breadcrumbs trail.
67. If a fic was titled [insert made up title], what would this story be about/how would you write it?
...I'm not sure how to answer this one without the made up title of choice! But titles rarely come first for me. When I'm very, very lucky, they come relatively early on in the writing process, and not in a desperate scramble at the last possible minute. Though I do sometimes have titles sitting in the back of my head for years, waiting for the right fandom/fic to show up for them. Always satisfying when one of those finds a home. (I do currently have one of those on the backburner - a line from my wife's favorite poem - but the WIP in question hasn't coalesced properly yet.)
69. What are your favorite fics at the moment?
Okay, so I'm currently doing a deep dive into Heartstopper fandom, which uh I'm not sure anyone else here would care about, and I'm kinda casting the net pretty wide at the moment in that sort of new(ish) fandom haze, where I'm not as picky as I normally would be, but also everything I've read is kind of starting to blur together? I wish I thought to bookmark fics more - I use author subscriptions instead of bookmarks for my own personal reference, but that's uh less helpful in a new fandom where I don't actually remember any author's username out of context. The most recent fics I've bookmarked (in ANY fandom) are:
like in the dramas by shoutowo (Heartstopper) - canon divergence where Charlie and Tao start fake dating after Charlie gets outed, and the ensuing complications once he meets Nick; it's just super charming and a fun subversion of the fake dating trope, and Charlie's repeated attempts to fake-break-up with Tao amuse me greatly.
That Was the River, This Is the Sea by @what-alchemy (TOG) - modern AU for Joe/Nicky, I fucking love the way this fic depicts them both, and how REAL they feel. I can't speak from a cis gay male experience, being a queer woman, but the depiction of Joe and Nicky's desire for each other in this fic is the closest I've ever read to the way my many queer male friends talk about sex and relationships, it just rings so unbelievably true to me. And also it's just lovely.
...apparently I've only bookmarked two new fics in 2024? Ugh. I really need to use bookmarks more often. But genuinely I'm just in a weird Heartstopper reading haze at the moment and I don't know what to rec because I'd have to track them back down again first, and my brain is not capable of that at 1am, whoops. 🤦‍♀️

fic recs
On this fanfic writer appreciation day, I'm going to take a moment to be sappy and sentimental. Whether I knew it or not at the time, fanfiction has gotten me through some Shit™. Even when I had no motivation to keep going irl, I could always count on ffn or ao3 to have that next chapter, that beautifully crafted one shot, that comfort fic that would make an awful day worthwhile. And when I say I could count on ffn or ao3, I mean I could count on the humans behind the usernames who were posting little pieces of themselves online for all the world to share in. So thank you - to my favorite writers, to those I have yet to find, to the ones who write long fics and the ones who write one shots. Thank you to the consistent updaters and the ones who've never posted anything at all. Thank you for being here and I hope you keep going, whatever fic writing means to you.
I've been lucky to meet some amazing people through this hobby and it's opened up spaces to me that I didn't even know I needed. Places of support and kindness and sharing and community and I wouldn't trade the friendships I've made there for anything else.
Thank you everyone for helping make that space possible💜
And now some fic recs! Because my sappiness has sources and you should all check these out (or at least mark them for when you have spoons later):
One-Shots:
Things my heart used to know (things it yearns to remember) by NiriKeehan (@nirikeehan)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Cullen Rutherford/Female Lavellan | Rated: T | 3,647 words Unquestionably one of my favorite pieces, a gift I received as part of the DAFF Discord Server 2023 OC Swap event. NiriKeehan beautifully captured the rocky relationship between my oc Neria Surana Lavellan and Cullen and filled in gaps in their history that I'd been struggling with since her inception. Set after the Inquisition arrives at Skyhold, Neria and Cullen work to find common ground despite their tumultuous past and the insanity of their present. Features: Cullen is good at his job, idiots in love, mage-templar dynamics
Cinnamon by Exalted_Dawn (@exalted-dawn-drabbles)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Calder Eikmann/Talena Ethera | Rated: M | 2,870 words My go-to fluff piece!! Calder and Talenna snuggle and share a sweet (and spicy) moment of peace. Oh, and Calder implies that Talenna (a Dalish elf who has left her clan) is part of his family and his mom thinks so too (I'm super normal about it). Features: tooth-rotting fluff, elf-human relationships, masterful dialogue, love is stored in the apple cider
Lead Her Through the Darkness by BECandCall (@warpedlegacywrites)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Gen, Female Lavellan | Rated: T | 3,121 words A beautiful character study of the moment @dreadfutures' Ixchel Lavellan chose her name. BECandCall does an incredible job with the internal monologue of a child and her prose and symbolism are expertly and beautifully crafted. Features: character study, genfic, ancient ruins, Evanuris, descriptive and immersive POV
last man standing (perhaps) by havvke (Wintertree)
Dragon Age: II | Carver Hawke & Charade Amell & Female Hawke | Rated: T | 6,749 words I'm a little insane about Charade Amell and how little we get of her in canon, so this gift I received as part of the 2023 Platonic Ideal Exchange was an absolute treat. It explores Charade's relationship (or lack thereof) with both Carver and Hawke, expands on her role with the Jennies, and packs a punch with the grief that is almost a given in any story about Hawke. Features: Warden Carver, new POV of canon events, canon-compliant exploration, families of choice
the things we carry by patho (ghostsoldier)
Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall | Daud, The Whalers | Rated: T | 4,158 words *shows up ten years late to the Dishonored fandom* *subjects you all to it anyway* so like. I know everyone followed me for Dragon Age. This is a Dragon Age centric blog. But it's my rec post and these Dishonored one shots have been clawing at my heart SO go play the games and then come back and read these fics 😂 This one is just absolutely heart-wrenching angst, as Daud and the Whalers deal with the aftermath of a tragedy. Features: found family, found family but slightly to the left, grief & mourning, betrayal, death, hurt/no comfort
the four times daud summoned a whaler who was totally unprepared for it (and the one time they were) by patho (ghostsoldier)
Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall | Daud, The Whalers | Rated: T | 1,705 words Unlike the other Dishonored fic on this list, this one is just fluff, fluff, and more fluff. I am a huge fan of when writers interpret game mechanics into narrative format and patho does that SO well here, I could literally picture this happening in the game and it was just a joy to read. Features: found family, humor, begrudging father-figure, slice of life
Long Fics:
Dead Pasts and Dread Futures by youworeblue (@dreadfutures)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Female Lavellan/Solas | Rated: E | Chapters: 170/170 | Complete | CW: depressive & suicidal themes It is flat out impossible for me to articulate a recommendation for this fic, but hell if I'm not going to try anyway. Ixchel Lavellan's story starts with her suicide - and continues with the journey of how she gets better. It is such a rare thing to find a story of recovery that captures the ups and downs, the highs and lows in a way that resonates with reality, but Blue does it. I don't know how, but she does it. Ixchel struggles, she doubts, she despairs, but she always finds a way forward. Despite or in spite of all the world throws at her, she tries to trust and she tries to hope and she keeps fighting. It's a story about choosing hope, even when no one would expect you to. It's a story of platonic love and empathy and morality and theory and lore and minor characters and so much more that I could fill an entire post with this fic alone. This was one of the first DA fics I ever read and it's one I've come back to over and over again. Because it's the kind of message you need to hear that many times and every time I read it I fall in love with Ixchel, her story, and the world and narrative that Blue has crafted a little bit more. If you only have the spoons to invest in one long fic, this is the one💜 It, and the sequel The Brave Guide, are absolutely worth your time.
A Fool's Death and a Hard Choice by RosellaWrites (@rosella-writes)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Loghain Mac Tir/Morrigan | Rated: M | Chapters: 12/12 | Complete A masterful exploration of what the reunion between Loghain and Morrigan who completed the Dark Ritual during Origins would look like. RosellaWrites has the biggest brain ideas about characters that most people gloss over or vilify - including me! I was such a Loghain hater before they started me chewing on his character and this fic is no exception. They interpret Loghain's harshness and Morrigan's aloofness into the multifaceted, heart-breaking characters that they are. This fic will win you over and break your heart exactly when you expect it (and again when you don't). Features: Warden Loghain, Kieran, Morrigan is a good mother, appearances by Hawke, Merrill, Zevran, and Mahariel, character study, beautiful descriptive prose
Boundless by Exalted_Dawn (@exalted-dawn-drabbles)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Calder Eikmann/Talenna Ethera | Rated: E | Chapters: 7/? | Ongoing We get so sparingly little of regular life inside the Circle of Magi, I'm a slut for fics that explore that environment. In this one, Ed explores what is "normal" for a circle mage and how Talenna, as a Dalish elf forced into the Circle, experiences, handles, and fights back against that. Talenna is a spitfire and she plays off the other characters that Ed created in a tantalizingly intense narrative. A must read for circle mage, Templar, and Dalish lovers alike! Features: day-to-day life in a Circle tower, mage-templar dynamics, hurt/comfort, star-crossed lovers, fluff and angst
Letters to the Dead by Demarogue (@demawrites)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Female Lavellan/Cullen Rutherford | Rated: E | Chapters: 7/? | Ongoing This one is for the ones like me, who broke up with Solas and ran off to see if you could romance Cullen afterward - you can! It's great! And also super heartbreaking if you think about it. And Demarogue has clearly thought about it. Told through a narrative in the present and letters that Niva Lavellan writes to an absent Solas, she weaves a tale of loss, grief, mourning, and (ultimately) recovery, with enough humor to break the tension along the way. Features: solavellan breakup, post-Corypheus battle Inquisition, unresolved tension of all kinds, beautiful exploration of how Cullen would feel about being Lavellan's rebound, idiots to lovers, friends to lovers
Keeping Secrets by ElvenSemi (@elvensemi)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Original Female Character/Solas | Rated: E | Chapters: 114/? | Ongoing Another one of my comfort fics, no question. This fic is heavy on the plot in all of the best ways - ElvenSemi's OC Emma is the linguist that the Inquisition hires to translate the dragon tome for Frederic of Serault. I love when authors fill in the gaps of canon or bend the canon details to fit their own ideas like that and it works SO well here. Emma is smooth and awkward and clever - she's well thought out and full of surprises and ElvenSemi writes with a strong voice that's a joy to read. It's the Inquisition behind the scenes, from the perspective of one of the people they're sheltering, rather than the higher ups who are running things (although there's certainly some of that too). Features: Skyhold lore and meta, lore and meta in general, the slowest burn Solas arc, lots of Bull/Chargers content, a very well done Sera subplot, so many minor characters in the most interesting ways, sad Tabris content, literally the Worst™ Inquisitor and Hawke ever (affectionate. kind of.), scary Leliana & Cassandra, bestie Dorian & bestie Varric, bards! so much barding, angst and hurt/comfort to the MAX
Temperance and Templars by NiriKeehan (@nirikeehan)
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Female Trevelyan/Cullen Rutherford | Rated: M | Chapters: 4/? | Ongoing A Jane Austen-inspired AU where Cullen is a private Templar hired by the Trevelyans to keep their mage daughter under control without taking her to the Circle. Cullen has other orders from his superiors, of course. I love a canon-adjacent AU (where the characters could be like this, even if they aren't actually) and this is no exception. It's a light and fluffy story for the most part, and explores what Cullen and the Inquisitor's dynamic might have been like if they were a bit younger (and not responsible for saving the world from multiple crises). Features: mage-templar dynamics, nobility, protector/protectee dynamics, lyrium addiction, political intrigue, Cullen has PTSD
From the Depths of the Void by kawakaeguri
Dragon Age: Inquisition | Cullen Rutherford/Original Female Character, Cullen Rutherford/Female Trevelyan | Rated: M | Chapters: 94/? | Ongoing Another one that's heavy on the plot in a very well done way! It also does one of my favorite things, which is weave together a character's arc across multiple games, namely DA2 & DAI. Liviana is a slave in Tevinter until she escapes and makes her way to Kirkwall. This fic tells the story of her stumbling, failing, learning, and growing, from where she enters during DA2 through Inquisition. It expands on the gaps between games and kawakaeguri's ideas about how that might of looked are clever and inspired and keep you on the edge of your seat while you read. Liviana as an OC has an incredibly well done backstory, that is both fleshed out and consistent throughout the story and will have you falling in love with her as I did. Features: well-developed platonic relationships galore, DA2 crew so well written, Liviana and Fenris bonding over Tevinter Slave Experiences™, a brief Liviana/Sebastian fling that explores learning what love is (and what it isn't), well-developed friendship that predates the romantic relationship, tie in of events from the comics, narratively satisfying reworking of canon backstory, character growth in so many ways for so many characters, well-structured subplots

favorite cr c3 character?
For a while it was pretty solidly Ashton, but now I'd say I'm evenly split between Ashton, Chetney, and Fearne.
(Apologies for long ass answer)
Ashton is just such a fascinating character, I've been drawn to them since the beginning. Like many Taliesin characters, they have a superiority complex, or at least a sense that they have a better understanding of the world than others, and yet, they also show true compassion and care for their allies. I think the Laudna/Ashton conversation from last Thursday is a top 5 moment from this campaign so far for me, and that's mostly due to Ashton. The way that Taliesin portrayed it in Ashton being completely real with Laudna but only under the caveat of being drunk and letting their raw emotions shine through. And then to cover it up with "Oh, I don't remember, I was drunk" and have Laudna shut it down. I'm fascinated by some of their statements "I know loneliness you don't, I know the truth of people that none of you do." Not statements that I think are true, but statements I deeply want to understand more from their perspective.
Chetney is very within the mold of characters I tend to like. I'm drawn to comic relief characters that have more depth than they appear to at the surface (Grog & The Gnomes in C1, Veth in C2). Maybe this character wasn't intended to be that deep at its inception but became that way via roleplay and organic growth through the campaign, ala a Scanlan. I think Travis plays Chet in a wonderfully comedic way, while also never letting us doubt that they're not just there to be the haha funny grandpa. I also love someone finally playing something different on the age spectrum. D&D races can literally live hundreds of years- why is every adventurer in their 20s-30s (or at least in the equivalent of that for their race like the gnomes in C1)? Much like Veth, I enjoy the ability to more deeply analyze and look into a character that much of the fandom my pigeonhole into a small box or being "just one thing."
Fearne is a delight for me because truly, it just shows that Ashley Johnson Has The Range. Pike was looks like cinnamon roll, could kill you. Yasha was looks like she could kill you, is a cinnamon roll. Fearne is sort of another looks like a cinnamon roll, could kill you but in a COMPLETELY different way than Pike. I have been ITCHING for someone to play Fey and Ashley is tackling it so beautifully. The sideways morality, the impulsiveness. That is a HARD thing to pull off as a player, it's taking your better instincts of "No, that's not smart, that's a bad idea" and going "My character would do this, regardless of potential consequences." While I'm not that attached to Orym, I think Fearne's relationship with Orym is fascinating. Because of their EXU connection, she so clearly has a fondness and attachment to him that exceeds her connection with anyone else in the group and I think it's with an intensity that most others can't match. If push comes to shove, I feel she would prioritize him not just over everyone, but in spite of everyone- I think in connection to her Fey-ness, there's this sense of "This is my person" that goes above and beyond others who also have a person. It's why in the Laudna/Orym res, regardless of the coin flip (which is not me saying I think Ashley cheated it), I was confident Orym would be res-ed. It's why on Thursday despite her care and hesitancy to go up against Imogen, when Orym asks, "Are you with me?" The no hesitation answer is "Always." It's intense in a way that I don't even think is reciprocated- Orym of course loves and prioritizes her, but I think there's an intensity in the way that Fearne cares about Orym that's unmatched and that to me is fascinating. A very, who and how many would you throw in harm's way to save this one person situation.

I really cannot overstate how groundbreaking/memorable your Good Omens fic is! I remember reading it in ye olde LiveJournal days and....God, it must be almost a decade later, when I got onto Tumblr I remembered not only the fics but your username and you can't imagine how chuffed I was to see that you 1) are still writing and 2) wrote Great Gatsy speculative fiction!!! Writing can be a hard, solitary endeavor, but please know that your stories resonated and continue to stay with me, and I reread them to this day. Thank you for sharing them with us!
LJ fandom was so much fun! I feel like I was writing and posting there on the borderline between LJ’s decline and AO3’s inception, and because I didn’t start transferring my fic from LJ to AO3 (and just posting to AO3, for that matter), I did myself and my readers a disservice. Still, Good Omens fandom was born on LJ in the early 2000s; I feel proud to have been there and writing at its inception, through to the present day.
I know there are folks who wish I loved the show the way I love the novel, but living with the book for 19 years and my longest, most involved work of fiction ever (CoT) for nearly as long has made it extremely difficult for me to see the novel’s setting of 1990 transposed to now (there’s also the issue that despite the fact that I love what I’ve seen of Tennant as a human being, I’ve never enjoyed any of his roles except for his Shakespearean ones; the casting of Crowley in particular was always going to be impossible in my eyes). It is what it is; we all have those stories that we’ll never see any other way.
Thank you for continuing to read and love my stories in a world where the novel is in some sense being phased out, I guess is what I’m trying to say 💙 I’m astonished I’m alive to be saying this; I didn’t expect to survive the cancer ordeal of 2019-2020. I thought that finishing CoT would be the last meaningful writing I’d ever do. It’s weird to be a survivor of so many health issues barely halfway through my life. I hope my next 40-50 years in fandom will be just as filled with amazing friends and fiction.

I swear this fandom is becoming more and more insufferable every day which is scary not to mention it's at least one more year of wait until season 2. I don't want even to imagine what it's going to be like when it actually airs. I've been in other fandoms, including the GoT one, but this level of toxicity, aggression, tribalism and hypocrisy is unreachable. What is with this show that encourages such behaviour? I really don't understand. I used to be team green (I still am kind of) during the show, especially the second half and after the show ended because I hated the way many black stans were acting towards anyone who didn't share their opinions and the way they talked about green characters (and even the actors) in general. Also, the framing of the show with it's good vs bad guys concept was annoying af so it wasn't hard to choose TG, at least to me. However, now I'm not even sure I care enough. It's so difficult to discuss anything show related normally and nust because all this toxicity soured the whole hotd experience to me now I'm more than anything team anti hotd fandom. That's why your fic is literally the last hotd related thing I'm looking forward to so atm so thank you for actually giving something good to this wretched fandom 😩. Seriously, Aemond and Rhaena should follow my example and just be done with everyone and everything lol. Anyway, I'm (not so😁) patiently waiting for the next update. I don't know anymore if I'll watch season 2, but I'll definitely read swhhw.
I get you. At large, it's not a fun fandom to be in. I remember when there was a petition to stop Matt Smith from being Dr Who on the grounds of him being too ugly, so in a sense it's a little amusing to see how he's inspired this whole "Choke me daddy" rabid fanbase... But other than that, it's really not much fun. People take everything as fighting words. They're attacking real people to defend fictional characters written by a man who hasn't even finished his series as yet after a decade long hiatus...
I don't even get the joy of reading other fics really, because I try to reduce the odds on me 'stealing' someone else's fic idea. Like, I know fair is fair and it's all fanworks, but I'll literally read something, go to sleep, incept myself, and wake up like "you know what would be really cool???" and it's only when I'm reading it all over that I'll realize that I've split off on a whole different unrelated tangent and have to course correct. I'm trying to write better and faster and cut down on how distracted I get. For example, writing while commuting feels productive but it really isn't, not how I do it. I get so distracted... I'll be editing and realize, "No, you can't write that. That's a line from a Hozier song."
HotD doesn't deserve the time or the energy. Like, I look at the word count of swhhw and question all my life decisions. But the rhaemond fandom is so nice and so small, you can't help it. It's like an oasis in a radioactive wasteland.
I'm also kinda doing it for Team Dyslexia and Team Dysgraphia in a sort of "We can do it!" way?
I really want to finish this before S2 starts.

/BARGES IN/ HELLO BUDDY REVERSE UNO CARD FANFIC ASK MEME 🥺, 🤡 , 🛒, ⌛
HIIIIIIIIIII ENNJI <3 I LOVE 2 BE UNO REVERSE CARDED!! also haha sorry these got ... quite long (i can talk about how long it takes me to write a thing for SO LONG buddy) so i'm putting the whole thing under a cut.
from these fanfic writer emoji asks
🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?
mmmmmmm.... had to think about this one for a bit because the types of interactions i tend to write for kakehai aren't actually the ones that put me in MY feels, haha. but i think moments of very small and mundane domesticity are moments i really like -- there's an almost off-hand kind of intimacy in that kind of sharing space that i'm really compelled by. that idea of like, oh this person is so familiar to me that things like reaching around them or being passed something by them is all happening somewhat subconsciously.
🤡 What’s a line, scene, or exchange you’ve written that made you laugh?
ohoho. i do think that i've gotten a lot less funny over the years, both as a person in how i interact with the world and also in the kind of writing i'm doing. part of this i think is just the particular bits of haiji/kazetsuyo that i latched onto (in particular contrast to the lighthearted, laugh-at-the-narrator, very romantic type of fic i primarily wrote for inception).
anyway, that to say i actually couldn't think of anything when i was answering this so then i went down a rabbit hole of google docs bc surely i'd written something i thought was funny in the last year and genuinely all i could find (though admittedly i didn't search very hard) was this snippet from a kunikidazai pwp ficlet i started for bcsdp when kunikida's been lost in thought for a while:
“Ku-ni-ki-da-kun,” Dazai prompts. “What’s happening upstairs?” “Nothing,” Kunikida snaps, and wishes he’d said none of your business as soon as Dazai smirks.
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
ok well i was going to say "i don't know but i skimmed through all my posted fic on ao3 and i had two whole fics that involved the pov character being a forger of some kind and a core romance-related theme being 'what is real vs what is valuable' which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice".
but then i remembered that i have like, three or four wips across a couple fandoms that are all basically "what happens to my blorbo guy after a big, life-changing experience ends and then he's left adrift and has to figure out how to be a person?" so i'll say that! i'm really compelled by the idea of having a like, identity-defining project and then having that like -- end abruptly and having a character still have to be themselves without it.
⌛ How long does it take you to write a fic, or a chapter?
SO LONG. ohh my god SO SO LONG. well okay that's not true, it really depends. one of my big "writing goals" (incredibly abstract goal, i would not say i'm working toward it) is to write faster.
i've gotten to a point where i can, more or less, rough out an outline of a 2-4k fic focusing on 1-2 character relationships with a single reasonably straightforward plot and no particular thematic intention in an afternoon, and probably draft it in a week (and revise in another week) if i'm not doing much else or the idea is really compelling and i don't get overthinky. a year or two ago, that would have taken me maybe a month or two of very like, focused and intense writing. but also there's like ... something about the 4k threshold that i just never can really cross with a fic like this.
but in terms of drafting and going from the start of an idea to an actual fic i am incredibly, incredibly slow. most fics that i'm writing now are more than 4k (even the mini version of heist!au is shaping up to be 5k ish) and are probably ... 3-5 drafts? for narrative!fic i've spent maybe 2-3 years now putting snippets in a evernote doc and drafted the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the story literally 4 times in the last year -- i'm like a chapter and a half into draft 4 now and that's taken already 2-3 weeks (and this was genuinely a fluke from the recent holiday weekend) and in my mind this is still a "first draft".
ok wow this was possibly more than you desire to know about how long it takes me to write things however haha i'm still not done! the thing that has been keeping me moderately sane about all this is this FANTASTIC BOOK called the art of slow writing by louise desalvo which i have also been reading incredibly slowly (i am about 60% of the way through and it has been since like, february of this year) but the book is this really wonderful (to me) collection of both desalvo's process and perspective of writing a novel, and a ton of referencing other writers and how goddamn long it took them to write things (with lots of gentle and loving mockery of writing as a practice, which i really enjoy). anyway! i recommend it -- whenever i get frustrated about how long a fic is taking i'll go read a chapter of this (they are all very short) and calm down about it.

In 2021 you said Stray Kids is the group "most closely following the BTS playbook". I didn't see it in 2021 and thought you were, to quote you again, "talking outta your ass", but with everything the group has done this year I have to say I agree with you. Do you think Stray Kids development and how closely it follows BTS is tied to the (friendly) rivalry between JYP and BangPD?
*
Ask 2: The fact StrayKidz submitted for Grammys is a joke. Their stans are getting annoying as well, acting like the reason kpop groups have a chance in American award shows in the first place isn't because of BTS. Do you think they have a chance to win the Grammys?
*
Ask 3: dk if you remember me bpp but i'm the army you convinced to become a stay last year. i'm happy with stray kids but this days i miss bts. funny is i also miss armies bc stays fandom is toxic in fan wars but armies made good jokes to balance out toxicness haha. is it too late to come back to bts and armies?
***
Hi Anon(s),
Given you're all talking about Stray Kids I thought to group you all together.
Anon in ask 1, it's possible. JYP in general is known for piggybacking on trends established by other companies in the Big3, but doing it well enough that their groups can stand on their own. For example, Twice at debut was widely seen as their answer to Girls Generation, NMIXX notoriously tried to piggyback on SM's 'hyper-pop/mixxpop' sound in NCT and Aespa (though they did it disastrously). It's one reason Itzy is struggling now for their apparent lack of a cohesive identity, given the group they were appeared to be modeled after, Blackpink, has only solidified their hold on their concept (girlcrush), while the trending girl groups now have a concept that's the complete opposite of girl crush. So, Itzy is unmoored as they seem to fit in nowhere but as they're a Big3 group, there's a solid fanbase that will support them regardless. Stray Kids has been generally regarded as JYP's answer to BTS.
For good reason. Stray Kids is very identical to BTS in distinct ways:
A hiphop subunit serving as the basis/bedrock of the group's identity and sound.
That subunit formed with underground rappers who partake in making nearly all the music for the group. This was a huge aboutface of JYP's strategy with boygroups to that point (eg 2PM and GOT7 where Jackson (the rapper) is on record saying that he didn't know how to rap nor care for it and was content to just rap what he was given, though he did it well enough but it was still obvious to people that he had no passion for it).
The leader of the group (also the key rapper) routinely showing vulnerability and looking to connect with their fanbase through frequent personal updates (Chan's room is seen as the analog to RM's hour-long lives and album breakdowns).
And other overlaps in album concepts and even pairing/ship dynamics (Minsung is a ship with nearly identical attributes to jikook in k-pop shipping circles, same with Chanlix and Minimoni).
Anyway, so rather than it being the result of friendly rivalry between Park and Bang PD, it fits more within the wider pattern of how JYP as a company operates in general.
But lol, I'm sure there's some rivalry there given they're competitors and seem friendly enough.
*
Anon in ask 2, yes I do think Stray Kids has a chance to be nominated for a Grammy and even win one. I think any k-pop group that's nominated for a Grammy has a higher chance of winning it than BTS.
*
Anon in ask 3, you're overthinking it. I vaguely remember you I think, and just as I said back then, it's a bit weird you're talking about stanning a group the way one talks about dating lol. You liking Stray Kids and BTS doesn't have to feel like you're breaking up with one to get with the other. Fandom behaviour across the board in k-pop is very similar, and I've found ARMYs are actually the best behaved considering their size and the sort of animosity they've dealt with since inception, compared to practically every other k-pop fandom for known groups. So while your experience with Stays doesn't surprise me, it's fine to just like whatever group you like. Both Stray Kids and BTS will be fine.

'It might feel like Barbienheimer is over now that the hype is finally starting to die down months after the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, but both films are currently front-runners to compete at the 96th Academy Awards. Right now, a number of award categories seem like sure nominations for the two films, and the odds are even in favor of them winning some of them. Barbie and Oppenheimer couldn't be more different from each other, so it's surprising that they're set to compete against each other like this. If one thing seems sure, it's that Barbenheimer hype is set to return to the Oscars.
Pop culture rivalries tend to be bitter and antagonistic: think about Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Marvel vs. DC, and Playstationvs. Xbox. The most refreshing thing about Barbenheimer was the way that two disparate fandoms joined forces, elevating both films in the process. They were always going to be hugely successful movies, but the absolutely mammoth box office is, in part, down to the films boosting each other. It's a shame, then, that it must end like this, as both films are forced to square off against one another for awards statuettes. These 10 categories are the most likely places they'll be nominated.
10. Barbie's "I'm Just Ken" For Best Original Song
Movie aside, Barbie: The Album is a huge hit in its own right, debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200, and with Rolling Stone even calling it, "one of the best albums of 2023 so far." The soundtrack album is full of original songs, many of which might be strong enough to garner the film a nomination for Best Original Song, but "I'm Just Ken," the musical sequence performed as the Kens all prepare to go to war towards the end of the movie is a universally beloved, standout moment. It's not just poised to be nominated in this category; it's currently the front-runner to win it.
9. Oppenheimer For Best Director
Given his filmography, it's almost difficult to comprehend how Christopher Nolan hasn't yet been nominated for Best Director at The Oscars. While you could potentially chalk some of this up to a snobbery in The Academy that can sometimes prevent them from wanting to nominate genre films and crowd-pleasing blockbusters, it seems particularly egregious when you remember that both Inception and Dunkirk were nominated for Best Picture among other awards. Nolan has been snubbed repeatedly by the Oscars throughout his career, but this is set to be the year to change that. A nomination in this category is practically guaranteed, and a win is a very real possibility.
8. Barbie's Ryan Gosling For Best Supporting Actor
Another almost guaranteed nomination as things stand is Ryan Gosling in the Best Supporting Actor category. It might seem unlikely to think of such a silly performance being acknowledged at the Oscars, but the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories are the one place that the Academy Awards historically like to show some love to comedies. Some significant past nominees include Robert Downey Jr. who was nominated for playing Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder, Melissa McCarthy who won for playing Megan in Bridesmaids, and Whoopi Goldberg who won for playing Oda Mae Brown in Ghost. When placed alongside those performances, Ryan Gosling's Ken fits right in.
7. Oppenheimer For Best Cinematography
Almost the entirety of Christopher Nolan's filmography looks immaculate, but Oppenheimer really took the cinematography in his films to the next level. Not content with being simply visually magnificent, Oppenheimer pushed the envelope by shooting entirely on IMAX, leading to its film reel weighing an astonishing 600 pounds and clocking in at 11 miles long. The hype surrounding how audiences were going to see the film screened worked wonders to get people into actual, physical cinemas, and based on the reaction The Academy had to Top Gun: Maverick last year, that's something that goes a long way for them.
6. Barbie For Best Costume Design
True to form for Barbie, this category seems like such a sure thing that it almost seems like cheating. More than anything in the world, Barbie is probably best known for her large variety of different, extravagant outfits, and the Barbie movie absolutely delivered on outfits. The Barbies and Kens all sported countless elaborate costumes and wardrobe changes throughout the film, with many quick flashes and sequences having little purpose beyond showing off new, exciting outfits, most of which were based on actual toys. It's almost impossible to imagine Barbie not being nominated in this category.
5. Oppenheimer For Best Original Score
Christopher Nolan is well known for collaborating with Hans Zimmer, but starting with Tenet, he now has a new collaborator in Ludwig Göransson. Göransson is a phenomenally talented composer who's had a monumental rise to fame over the past few years. Continuing the strange trend of Community alums going on to work in the MCU, Göransson was hired to score Black Panther after working with Ryan Coogler on Creed. Black Panther won him his first Oscar, and judging from the almost universal acclaim for the music in Oppenheimer, his second Oscar seems extremely likely.
4. Barbie For Best Production Design
Just as with costumes, it almost seems too easy to say that Barbie will be nominated for Best Makeup and Hair, so what about Production Design? The film features fully realized recreations of numerous toy sets, including the iconic Barbie Dreamhouse. The movie required so much of it, that constructing Barbieland wiped out Rosco's entire supply of pink paint, causing a global shortage. It's understandable given that the film had to create everything from plastic food to plastic swimming pools from scratch. More importantly, though, the resulting film looks vibrant, innovative, imaginative, and unique.
3. Oppenheimer's Cillian Murphy For Best Lead Actor
Not only does the Academy historically love portrayals of real-life people, but they also always seem to respond well when an actor dramatically alters their weight. Cillian Murphy did just that to match the appearance of real-life J. Robert Oppenheimer, reportedly eating just a single almond a day at the height of filming. There's much more to his work than simple gimmicks, though. He gives a nuanced performance throughout the film, allowing us an insight into the troubled and, frequently, contradictory mind of Oppenheimer. Given Cillian Murphy's talent and popularity, it's easy to forget that he hasn't been nominated for an Oscar before, but this is set to be the year to change that.
2. Barbie for Best Original Screenplay
Despite Barbie being what The Academy would typically consider to be an adapted screenplay (based on pre-existing characters), it's been announced that Warner Bros. intends to enter Barbie in the Best Original Screenplay category. Assuming that they're allowed to, it makes perfect sense because this year's heavy writing competition all lands in the Adapted Screenplay category where, not only will Oppenheimer likely be competing, but also other films tipped to become Oscar-heavyweights: Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things. A lot can (and will) change between now and March 2024, but as things stand, the only major completion for Barbie in the Original Screenplay category is Past Lives.
1. Both For Best Picture
This is where things are really going to heat up. The amicable union between Barbie and Oppenheimer fans is set to come to an end as both films are currently front-runners for nominations in the coveted Best Picture category, meaning that they will be directly competing with each other for the top prize of the night. In the words of Ava Max on Barbie: The Album, it's going to be time to "Choose Your Fighter." Hopefully, a different, third film will win, allowing the union of Barbenheimer to remain as positive as it has up until now.
The 96th Academy Awards take place on March 10, 2024.'

Behind the Keyboard-Volume 13
Tumblr media
Please note that Behind the Keyboard will be posted once per week during the Reading Challenge. We’ll go back to twice a week in mid-August.
Behind the Keyboard is a series of interviews with different Schitt’s Creek fanfic authors. The series will last as long as there is interest (from authors) and capacity (from me). If you are an author from the Schitt’s Creek fandom who would like to participate, send a DM to this account.
Each author was given ten questions. The first five questions are the same for every author, the last five will vary.
Remember, this year’s Reading Challenge begins July 15, so polish up those MFL lists.
Let’s meet our next author:
@shimmies / shimmies
How many fics have you written?
I think I’m up to 38! I post some of my art to ao3 so that bumps my total count to 44.
When did you publish your first fic on AO3?
2020. I watched Schitt’s Creek that spring/summer. I specifically remember looking for David/Patrick fic after watching Grad Night, and was a lurker for a while. Eventually I was like, hey! I could do this too! Why am I not already doing this?
Describe your writing process from “Oh, I have an idea” to pushing publish on AO3.
If I have an idea/scene/line pop into my head I basically can’t accomplish anything in real life until I get it written down. But these come to me in so many different ways. Sometimes I hear a song and I force myself to craft a plot to fit my interpretation of it. Sometimes I vividly see a scene in my head and struggle for days to choose a title. Sometimes I’ll write an entire fic within a couple hours of its inception. Sometimes I’ll write down a line of dialog and stew over it for weeks before either fleshing out the story or finding it a spot in another WIP.
In general I do like to start with an outline but I’m a “path of least resistance” kind of person, so I work on whatever is coming to me at the moment. Nothing has to happen in a particular order or with a particular method.
Tell me about your most recent fic? What do you love about it? Is there anything you think you could have done better?
My last published fic was RPF ( hope i'll see you down the line ), which I fully understand is not everyone’s cup of tea, then some Outer Range stuff before that. So for the sake of this semi-public statement I will consider my last Schitt’s Creek fic, Alarm C(l)ock. I published it in March and it was the first thing I’d finished since Frozen Over in December. I had been feeling so uninspired for so long, so what I love most is it was a really nice boost for my creative energy and self esteem and definitely got the gears turning again. If I went back and looked for stuff to improve I’m sure I would come up with a hundred little tweaks, but I really don’t like doing that. [Editor’s note: shimmies has since published  (Not) Being Left Behind Again and  Tuning In On You both for the Schitt’s Creek fandom.]
What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about publishing their fic for the first time?
This is going to sound super cliche but the fandom experience is whatever you make of it. Want to share your work with others? We’re here for it! Publish it and change your mind? Delete it! Asexual smut writer? Cool! Are the comments and kudos what keep you going? Reblog that fic from last month! Life’s too short to let a hobby make you unhappy or uncomfortable!
Plot vs vibes - pick one.
Hmm, I think vibes. Sure, a good plot will keep the pages turning (metaphorically), but when you find that fic that turns you into the human equivalent of the inside of a roasted marshmallow BUT IN THE BEST POSSIBLE GOOEY WAY? Heaven.
What parts of writing are easy for you? What parts are hard?
I’ll start with the hard part which is finding free time, inspiration, and motivation all lining up at the exact same time. It’s a miracle I’ve ever gotten anything accomplished at all.
I would say the planning of a story is probably easiest for me. I’m a planner by nature so usually I’ll have a good idea of the progression of a story (in a bulleted outline, of course) before I even start writing any scenes in detail.
In your mind, what’s the most important element of good writing?
Do your research and get your details correct! Whether it’s rewatching scenes so you know the character better, learning about a culture being represented, or whatever is relevant to your story, it’ll feel natural when it’s done well but it’s hard to ignore when it’s done badly. (This is not a callout of anything/anyone in the fandom! You’re all awesome!)
Tell me about one of your favorite headcanons.
Patrick is not actually allergic to cats, and he just freaked out because his crush’s sister started flirting with him. He has to come clean when David catches him feeding a friendly stray cat that hangs around outside their store. He and David have a minimum of 2 cats at all times post-canon.
What are your three favorite tropes?
This is so tough but I’ll say forced proximity, fake dating, and accidental confessions, but each with a healthy dose of mutual pining.

Look for additional notes at the bottom.
Tumblr media
My name is Ezra.
I have my mama to thank for that. Time has erased her face from my memory, but her voice is ingrained into the tissue of my brain the same way these words are inked on this parchment. She was a bonafide believer that the meaning of a child’s name influenced the course of their destiny. When I was no taller than the height of her waist I learned my own name’s denotation: help.
It’s just a tick too ironic, isn’t it? To be destined to help others when I can’t help my own self. I gave the Green far too little credit. It didn’t just pilfer my arm to satisfy its ravenousness, it greedily stole my sense of purpose too.
Every night I thank the deities you didn’t accompany me there. If the Green had taken you...
I know how worried you are about me, little love of mine. When I look at you, I find you already looking back, a sweet smile gracing your lips even as concern burns in your eyes as an eternal flame. From day one you’ve always been looking at me, seeing every disgraced flaw and scar—even the invisible ones carved into the darkest edges of my soul. Kevva knows I’ve never been capable of concealing anything from you, but fuck if I don’t wish I could sometimes.
You’re asleep now as I write this, tucked against my side in the vacant space my arm once occupied, drooling on my shirt. I love you so much it hurts. A black hole in my chest perpetually aching to be filled by your presence. And as we venture once more into the starry sea, our ship gliding past the imaginary wings of Noctua, I find myself recalling a theory you once told me many cycles ago about humans being made in the womb with stardust infused in their bones, linking them to the universe. You and I were made from the same star, you said with such conviction it stole the breath from my lungs, bound to each other for eternity by the Currents of the universe.
And it’s undoubtedly selfish, but all I could think of in that tender moment beyond kissing you was how I didn’t want an eternity spent together with our cosmic bodies intertwined.
I want longer.
Tumblr media
Soon after we awoke and each consumed a slice of bush bread bought during our recent docking at Kamrea, you fiddled with the channels on the ship’s radio, hoping to hear news from your homeworld but cursing when you only heard static. Then, without an ounce of forewarning, music burst out with an almighty scream through the speakers at full volume, flooding the whole compartment with a woman’s warbling. It was the same crusted Vayok song that merc Inumon blared in my ears during my last night on the Green, every note an individual needle piercing my skull, impossible to ignore.
Reality deserted me, leaving me to sink to the depths of the abyss within my mind where all I could see was Cee’s pale, disturbed expression as she looked to me for guidance. I remembered how my tongue felt clumsy in my mouth as I tried my damnedest to negotiate our transport, thinking if I could just piece together the right sequence of words, if I could just get their lingering eyes off of her, then maybe, maybe we’d have a chance at salvation.
The memories coalesced, overlapping and blurring and mixing out of order. Each one was drenched in spilt blood.
Then your pinky wrapped around mine. The touch was soft yet firm, the action childlike in its innocence. It was such a jarring contradiction to my mind’s violent narrative, my consciousness was hurtled back into the living quarters of our ship as a result. You didn’t say anything when you saw I returned to you. Instead, you swallowed down the questions lodged in your throat and led me by our entwined fingers back to our bed.
There’s a plant back home called a dandelion, you told me with my head resting in your lap, a far better comfort than any pillow could provide me. It’s the only plant in the galaxy you can see the sun, the moon and the stars when you look at it. That’s not why it’s my favorite though.
I asked how it had won your heart’s favor if not due to its resemblance to the celestial bodies, then immediately found myself mesmerized by the smile that lit up your face as you peered down at me. My chest cavity tightened as I was filled with the profound longing to be able to suspend time, if only so I could stretch this moment to match the length of our separation, if only so I could erase the old and replace it with the beautiful new.
Dandelions grant wishes, babe. Anything you wish for with your whole heart, it will be yours to have.
I told you I wouldn’t wish for anything—nothing else in the galaxy could compare to the prettiest, wisest soul I’d ever encountered in all my years traversing it. You saw right through that lie with the same confident ease you see through all my masks and diversions, but—for the second time in the span of an hour—you held your tongue.
This journal’s as good a place as any to admit the honest truth. So here it is: I wish with the entirety of my bloody, beating heart I could be the man you deserve, little love of mine.
Tumblr media
When you read, whether it be a book or the flight manual, you have the precious habit of mouthing the words. I don’t think you have the faintest notion you’re even doing it, which makes it all the more endearing to watch.
My brother had a similar habit, always nose deep in the yellowing pages of classic literature, except he had a proclivity to spoil the plot when he talked in his sleep. I remember there was one particular novel he returned to often, sometimes reading from beginning to end, other times seeking out specific segments he’d underlined in bold, black pen. It was a rather dreary tale about war and rivalry and the process of determining one’s own identity. I became so exasperated with my brother’s obsession I considered shredding it on more than one occasion, only to immediately hate myself for entertaining the thought.
It was only after his death—twelve whole cycles, in fact—that I summoned up the will to open the front cover. Seeing his name scribbled in the corner, cursive and neat and so utterly him, nearly had me tearing the book in half, overcome with a vicious rage I had never known prior nor have I encountered since. But by the almighty grace of Kevva I reigned it in, chaining it to the agony and fear imprisoned within the confines of my rib cage, and turned the page.
There was one segment underlined not once, but three times, nearly bleeding ink onto the page behind it. When I close my eyes, the words are tattooed on the backs of my eyelids, as haunting as they are comforting.
So the more things remained the same, the more they changed after all. Nothing endures. Not love, not a tree, not even a death by violence.
The author lived and died centuries before my brother’s inception, that is an inarguable fact.
But I know those words were written for him all the same.
Notes:
There is an actual theory humans are made of stardust ✨
The Sater within Prospect mention the Currents as being responsible for bringing Ezra and Cee to them, so I imagine them as similar to the Fates/Moirai in Greek mythology.
Noctua is a real life, extinct constellation that is Latin for owl. I thought within this Prospect universe it could exist as a type of landmark or coordinate. Plus I love owls 🦉
Crusted is a term from Prospect Ezra uses. Equivalent of damn. I think there’s something funny about how they use creamy as a positive adjective and crusted as negative.
Vayok is the alien language Inumon speaks within the movie, so I decided to write the song she blares as being sung in the same language
Bush bread is referenced in a deleted scene by Ezra, but a google search revealed to me it’s also a real life type of bread too
In the same deleted scene Ezra references that he has a brother. I haven’t decided his name yet/if he will have one
The book and quote Ezra refers to in #3 is John Knowles’ A Separate Peace. One of the few required reading books I liked back in high school.
The quote about dandelions being the sun, moon and stars is based on the legend of how dandelions came into existence. I always thought it was beautiful.

June-Sept Re-recs (12)
This is the best of the best of the best of what I've reread in the last couple of months. I end up downgrading a lot of the fics I reread because even my tastes change over the years. These are the ones that stay awesome, even after many rereads.
(For comparison, I put a little sparkle ✨ image next to the most perfectest (yup!) fics in my regular rec posts. The fics in this post are all sparkle.)
I included my first-read date. The calendar says 2011 was ten years ago but I have my doubts.
Now We've Learned To Kiss The Sky by torakowalski
MCU | Clint/Coulson | Explicit | 13,800 words
“I’m going to ask you something,” Phil says and then pauses and doesn’t ask Clint anything at all. “Yeah?” Clint asks, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. “Is it kinky?” It isn’t, obviously; Phil never has a problem suggesting anything when it comes to sex. Phil shakes his head. He looks up, catching and holding Clint’s eyes. Clint doesn’t make any more smartass comments. “Marry me?” Phil asks.
First read in 2012. It's still so lovely.
Disclosures by gqgqqt
MCU | Clint/Coulson | Teen | 67,900 words
Phil Coulson is miserable, distrusted by most of SHIELD, and still doesn't remember why. It's only going to get worse before it gets better.
(2012) I didn't think I was going to like this, this time around. But nope. Still perfect.
Quriosity by dr_girlfriend
James Bond | Bond/Q | Explicit | 79,900 words
Bond finds himself increasingly curious about his enigmatic Quartermaster.
(2014) Very very good and pretty much the prototype of what I want out of the bond/q fandom.
Out of the Dead Land (orphaned on ao3)
MCU | Bucky/Steve | Mature | 62,700 words
Someone is building machines that look and act like people. Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier tries to be Bucky Barnes.
(2014) Brilliant H/C
All the Rules to Break by foxxcub
Inception | Arthur/Eames | Explicit | 27,700 words
A notorious serial killer returns after a three-year hiatus, reminding Detective Arthur Moss of the infamous case he couldn't close. But when the FBI becomes involved, Arthur is forced to work side-by-side once again with Special Agent Daniel Eames, a man who knows Arthur better than Arthur himself will ever admit. Both men must confront their past and heal old wounds in order to bring a psychopath to justice.
(2011) I love this AU. Always have, always will.
I've Got Nothing To Do Today But Smile (The Only Living Boy in New York) by gyzym
Inception | Arthur/Eames | Teen | 19,860 words
Arthur's a corporate lawyer, Eames owns the coffee shop across the street, and all good love stories start with a quadruple shot latte.
(2011) Another AU I will love forever. Still amazing.
Scattered Pieces of My Mind (orphaned on ao3)
Hockey RPF | Kane/Toews | Teen | 22,580 words
After one scandal too many, Patrick Kane gets traded. Eventually it stops being the worst thing that's ever happened to him.
(2014) And this here is the prototype for my favorite H/C scenario. I feel like this rec list may be giving a bit too much away on my state of mind these days.
we were even after all, even in enmity (orphaned on ao3)
Hockey RPF | Kane/Toews | Mature | 60,000 words
“Jonathan,” Q says solemly. Something in his tone gives Jonny pause. He sits up straighter, waiting for the end of the sentence. “I regret to inform you that you’ve been traded to the St. Louis Blues. It’s been an honor and a pleasure working with you the past few years, and you will be sorely missed. Please clean out your locker before you leave today.” “That’s what Kaner said in your meeting?” Jonny asks, feeling numb. “That’s why it took so long? He was convincing you to trade me?”
(2014) Yup, you guessed it. H/C, angst, whump. Perfection.
Shelter by harriet_vane
Social Network RPF | Jesse/Andrew | Teen | 63,500 words
From the kinkmeme prompt: Some sort of AU vaguely based on Shelter! For whatever reason, Jesse has to take care of Hallie and give up his dream of being an actor. He ends up working in a dead end job when former, now successful friend (Andrew) returns home. They fall in love, etc, only Jesse can't go away with him because he has a responsibility to his family. CUE ANGST.
(2011) I remembered the bare bones of this story and thought I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much now... but it turned out to be excellent. Really cute AU.
here comes the sun by oflights
Social Network | Mark/Eduardo | Explicit | 56,600 words
This is a story about growing up, sad 70's rock songs, too much hair gel, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", a baby with curly hair, a Geiger counter, a dog that isn't named Max, the Chicken Dance, Cheerios, pepper-spray, drugs, sex, and a stuffed chicken named Cluckerberg, nicknamed Cluck. or: Mark raises Sean's accidental baby, and I write the fluffiest thing ever.
(2011) And then there's this one... I mean, who'd want to read about Mark Zuckerberg in 2021, right? I do apparently. This story still gets five huge stars from me, implausible setup and all. It's endearing, romantic, super cute.
All The Stars And Bleeding Hearts by torakowalski
Social Network RPF | Jesse/Andrew | Explicit | 40,470 words
Notting Hill AU. In which Jesse runs a bookstore, Andrew is a famous film star and they’re both faily dorks in love.
(2011) Beautifully done!
and how many years I've missed you by estrella30
One Direction RPF | Harry/Nick | Explicit | 17,900 words
“So my god, Nick,” Harry folds himself down into a chair, his long legs splaying out under the table. His foot knocks into Nick’s and Nick kicks him back reflexively, his body remembering how to act around Harry even after all this time. “This is bloody crazy,” Harry shakes his head. “It’s been ages, yeah? It’s got to be like, what, five years or something?” Seven, Nick thinks to himself. You were just nineteen and I was twenty eight and it was seven years ago, not five. or, the one where Harry and Nick haven't seen each other or been in touch in seven years and then they meet up and things happen
(2014) More angst. Frickin' beautiful.

I’ll Be Seeing You | Robert Fischer x Reader (Oneshot)
Prompt: Dream
Fandom: Inception
Words: 1354
A/N: Been meaning to write some stuff for some of Cillian Murphy’s characters and had rewatched Inception. I started to think what else that technology could be used for, and this fic came about. I rewrote it twice because I make things complicated on myself and the final result is always the easiest to write.
-
The mind is a complicated maze and there are many that make it a profession to navigate through them. A few, however, go deeper than that. While others interpret and study the mind, thoughts and ideas could also be extracted or planted.
You knew you were in a dream. You were standing at the George Washington bridge, leaning against the railing and watching people come and go. It was a place you went to often as a student when you wanted to think. But, you knew you weren’t physically in New York. You were in a hotel room in London where you had to attend a business meeting.
The last couple of months had been stressful, but hopefully, with the new deal, it would all be worth it. You breathed in deeply, the smell of salt and exhaust would have been filling your nostrils. As you exhaled, you turned to walk back to your old apartment.
Your feet carried you to a familiar part of the neighborhood and you felt a bittersweet taste in your mouth at the sight of it. The mom-and-pop businesses, people jogging, students walking home from school, the art running along the wall. You missed this place.
Once you had gone up to your apartment floor, you saw a familiar figure. Tall and lean man with neatly styled hair and a tailored suit.
“Robert?” you said in surprise. Why was he here?
He turned, those haunting blue eyes greeting you as he smiled. “(Y/n), I was hoping to catch you,” he said.
“Why are you suddenly here?” You walked around him, keys at the ready to open the door.
“You must be thinking of me,” he joked, “Or how else would I be here?”
“I don’t know.”
You opened your apartment door, cautiously letting him in. Since it was your dream, you could always manipulate a few things if it gets out of control. Until then…
“Now, why would I be thinking of you?” you wondered out loud, plopping down in an armchair.
Robert shrugged. “You must’ve missed me.”
“I don’t,” you answered sharply.
He looked around your apartment and sat himself on the couch near you, leaning back as if he owned the place. Your eyes scanned his form, wondering why he had showed up. He looked the same as the last time you saw him, back when he was trying to follow his father’s footsteps. So much had happened since then.
“So, what have you been up to lately?” he asked casually.
You crossed your arms. “You know what it is already.”
Robert huffed out a laugh at your stubbornness. “Humor me, (Y/n/n).”
“You used to hate it when I do. Nothing was funny to mister Robert Fischer, successor of daddy Fischer’s company,” you said sarcastically. “Nothing was right. Nothing was easy. Nothing was ever enough.”
He sighed in defeat, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Look, I’m sorry. There were things I’ve said that I shouldn’t have said. I was angry and stressed and it clouded my thinking. I’m sorry, (Y/n), and you were right to leave me.”
You felt your heart squeezed at his words. It was what you had always wanted to hear from him all these years. After you broke up, you had not spoken to him ever again. You moved away and started your own business that had been gradually thriving.
He stood up, shrugging off his suit jacket and walked over to one of your many bookshelves where you had a couple of picture frames placed. Graduation pictures, birthday polaroids, and a few framed certifications and achievements on the wall next to them.
“I’ve been reading about your business in the news. I’m happy for you,” he said with a genuine smile, pointing at the picture that you took with the starting crew of your business.
“Thank you.”
He moved on to the books that filled the rest of the shelves, running a slender finger over the spines and stopping at the small photo albums. You quickly stood up as he pulled one out that you were sure he was familiar with. He flipped it open and was greeted with a picture of the two of you from college at a bar with your friends doing a pub quiz. He smiled, taking his time at looking at each and every photo that you had foolishly kept. This physical one was still in a storage bin, but it didn’t mean that it no longer existed.
“I miss you,” he whispered, blue eyes flicking towards you as you walked up to him.
You crossed your arms again. “You never called,” you said softly, and hating yourself because of it. Now was not the time to feel small.
He slid the photo album back and turned his body to face you. His eyes roamed your face, as if trying to memorize it, hands slowly rising to grab your arms. Then, he slowly led you towards the middle of the living room, leaving your side to fiddle with the record player that he remembered he had gifted you for your birthday.
Billie Holiday’s voice filled the room as Robert walked back to you, and offered you a hand.
“May I have this dance?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
You laughed, looking away so he wouldn’t see you smile, but it was too late. You relented, taking his hand and allowing him to gather you in his arms. He began to sway with the music, resting his head against yours.
“I miss you so much,” he muttered again into your shoulder.
You sighed, wrapping your arms tightly around him. “I miss you, too. I hate that I do, but I can’t stay mad at you for this long.”
The two of you stayed like that until the song finished. Then, Robert pulled back, holding your face in his hands.
“Come back with me,” he said.
You frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Wake up,” he said firmly, “Please. Wake up.”
You blinked in confusion. Suddenly, there were flashes of the streets of London. You had gone to have a quick walk to think when it started to rain heavily. The roads were instantly flooded, cars splashing water onto the sidewalks as they drove past.
Non, je ne regrette rien started to play, echoing around the room and seemingly not having any source. Robert looked around, eyes widened in panic.
“Please, come back with me,” he pleaded.
A car turned a corner near you and lost control.
“I… okay. But I don’t understand-” you said as the music grew louder.
You had been frozen in place as the car skidded onto the sidewalk, then…
Darkness.
Robert closed his eyes and you did the same, forcing yourself to wake up.
-
Non, je ne regrette rien was playing softly as you woke up. Your body felt heavy and your limbs were too stiff to move. You blinked, your eyes adjusting to the light as you looked around. White walls, white curtains, white blankets, white bed with metal railings, an IV drip in your arm and a cast on your leg. You were in the hospital.
You heard someone sigh in relief next to you. The music stopped and a thin man with dark hair came into view. The person that was next to you walked up to him and shook his hand.
“Thank you,” he said to the man.
“No problem, Fischer,” the man said. “About time we use this stuff for good.”
“Robert?” you strained to say with your dry throat.
He whipped his head around, showing his disheveled hair and bags under his blue eyes. The man looked between you two and offered a small smile, packing his things and left without a word. Robert rushed to your side, gently picking up your hand as if it might shatter with too much force.
“What happened?” you asked. “How did I-”
Robert shushed you, pressing the button above to call in a nurse. “I’ll explain later, love. You’re back now,” he said, slowly standing up.
“Don’t leave.”
“I won’t. I’ll be nearby. I promise.”

Getting To Know You Meme!
Rules: tag a few people you want to know better; make a new post, don't reblog!
Tagged by @eldritchjackalope - thanks for the tag, pal!!
~
Favourite Colour:
Deep red (merlot), or some shade of blue-green. Or deep green. I have many favourite colours!
Currently reading:
She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan (absolutely stellar), Anxious People by Fredrik Backman (sadder than I expected it would be so far), and A Natural History of Transition by Callum Angus (just started this one, so far it’s very good).
Last song:
Found by Jacob Banks. It’s on my witch au playlist, and I have been playing it (and a few others) all the time lately. It’s so good.
Last movie:
The Princess Bride! It’s one of my absolute faves, and I hadn’t watched it in a long time. And I watched it in one go, which makes it the first full-length movie I’ve made it through in one sitting in 3 years, which is kind of amazing to me!!
Last series:
I’m guessing this means TV series - in which case, Leverage. I’m currently on the 5th season, which is fantastic so far.
Sweet, spicy or savoury: Both! I tend to go for savoury when I’m snacking, but have a pretty big sweet tooth too.
Coffee or tea:
Both! I tend to drink more tea, because it’s easier than making french-press coffee, but I very much enjoy both.
Three ships:
The Ever Given, the Bluenose, and the Titanic.
Okay, but in all seriousness (and trying to go from different fandoms for funsies):
Aly / Clayton / Matthew, from UnDeadwood. Or any combination of the three, really.
Arthur / Eames, from Inception. This is one of my long time absolute favourite ships.
Gideon/Harrow, from The Locked Tomb quartet. I don’t really read fanfic for this fandom, but by god do I ship them so hard.
First ever ship:
Oh boy. I legitimately can’t remember what the first ever one was, because that was around 17-18 years ago, and timelines are a bit fuzzy.
However, Ban/Ginji from The Get Backers was a big ship of mine around that time, so lets go with that.
Currently working on:
Too many things!!
Fanfic wise, the current list of “actively working on it” is:
the witch clayton au
the nemesis au
the ps i love you au
the jaws that bite the claws that catch
but don’t you shake alone
I’m also working on a lot of art lately, and am consistently working on several DnD campaigns that I DM for. I’m also (very slowly, sorry to the pal that will receive it) working on a physical mail ttrpg that I’m doing with a friend.
Favourite piece of clothing:
Currently, a few t-shirts I have: my fat bear week King Otis shirt, my shark tshirt, my Reading Rainbow t-shirt.
Of the not t-shirt variety, my white hat with the red flowers on it, and my Iron Ranger boots.
Comfort food:
Baked goods - muffins, sweet breads, toast, that sort of thing. I like baking when I’m stressed. Also grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Favourite time of the year:
Fall!! I love fall. The colours, the cooling weather, the comfy sweaters I get to wear - all very good.
Fave fanfic:
Oh gosh. That’s a tough one. Probably my fav fanfic of all time, that I’ve read a billion times over, is:
Blake’s Corollary by Pagination
There’s also like, a bajillion UnDeadwood fics that I love with my whole heart:
LoveWithAGirl’s when everything was broken/the devil hit his second stride
afearsomecritter’s oh how these waters rise
redhood’s hold back all my dark
savage_starlight’s laurel wreath
nevershootamockingbird’s in the night i am wild-eyed and you’ve got me now
KC_Polar_Bear’s 7 shots
wollfgang’s the heart is a fist
And probably many more I’m forgetting about, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head!
Tagging (but only if you want to!!): @a-tired-space-ace, @primelinchen, @lovewithagirl, @swallowtailed, @nevershootamockingbird, and/or anybody who follows me who wants to do this!
